The wildly eclectic New Rhythm & Blues Quintet, better known to its worldwide legion of adoring fans as NRBQ (or just the Q!), is the only band on the planet that can play rockabilly, bar-band blooze, Beatles sound-alikes and Sun Ra-style free jazz in the same set and remain standing.

The Q immediately followed Scraps with 1973s equally terrific Workshop. Gadler had departed, reducing the Quintet to its customary foursome (natch!), but the band never missed a beat with an album that featured the hypnotically chugging Come On If Youre Coming, the mouth-watering RC Cola and a Moon Pie and the ultra-prophetic Get That Gasoline Blues.

By the time keyboardist Terry Adams, vocalist Frank Gadler, bassist Joey Spampinato, drummer Tom Staley and fabulous new guitarist Al Anderson released Scraps, their wonderful second album in 1972, they had relocated from Florida to New Jerseyand, like their name says, they were actually a quintet for the only time in their career. Talk Thelonious

Plated & pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

NRBQ founder Terry Adams pays tribute to his favorite pianist/composer on his album, Talk Thelonious. Adams says it's been a lifetime in the making. I finally realized it was something I was supposed to do. The music on Talk Thelonious is physical and cerebral, simple and complex, and full of pleasant surprises. The album features all the members of NRBQ and the Whole Wheat Horns with an added guest. Both Adams arrangements and the performances stay true to the genius of Thelonious Monk while still going to some new and exciting places.

Highlights include a rollicking Hornin In, an understated but breathtaking Monks Mood, a playful, buoyant That Old Man, a pedal steel-driven, two-stepping Straight No Chaser, and Ruby, My Dear, the albums tour de force with a triplet-driven rhythm section and tremolo electric guitar embellished sparingly by horns, strings, chromatic harmonica, flutes and accordion.

Don't Press Your Luck! The In Sound Of 60's Connecticut

Connecticut had a solid garage rock scene in the mid-'60s, and more than a few of the best bands in the region logged time at Wallingford's Trod Nossel Studios (aka Syncron Sound), a recording facility run by Thomas Doc Cavalier, truly an unlikely champion of local rock & roll. Cavalier was a successful dentist who gave up his practice to manage New England rockers the Bram Rigg Set and the Shags (not to be confused with the infamous Wiggin sisters), and when Syncron Sound (where both bands had recorded) fell on hard times, he bought the studio, changed the name, and turned it into a profitable business that's still running today.

Don't Press Your Luck! collects material from a handful of New England acts who recorded at Trod Nossel and were overseen by Cavalier, and there's little arguing that the folks at the studio knew their stuff -- compared to many compilations of '60s garage rarities, these tracks sound lively and robust, crackling with teenage energy but recorded with a skill that didn't blunt the enthusiasm of the musicians. (Bob Irwin's superb remastering is also to be commended.) And the music is pretty great, too -- the Wildweeds' classic No Good to Cry (featuring a pre-NRBQ Al Anderson) is the standout here, but there's also some moody beat stuff from the Shags (Don't Press Your Luck, Hide Away), fuzztone-powered angst from the Bram Rigg Set (Sleepless Nights, You Don't Love Me, and a potent cover of Them's I Can Only Give You Everything), and intriguing weirdness from the misanthropic Fourth Ryke (Please Leave, You're Cutting Out).

While you'd expect high goofiness from a group called Uranus and the Five Moons, their material is actually smart and adventurous (Nothing Remains, SSS Happenin' Here). Some radio spots recorded at Trod Nossel also make the cut, as does a demonstration of the wonders of multi-track recorded based around a session by the Shags. Garage fanatics and folks with a taste for Connecticut history will both find this set to be well worth investigating.

    Volume Three

With fourteen songs-11 Deschanel originals and three covers-
Volume 3 is an effortlessly effervescent, bleached-out-in-the-sun pop
record. The album features some of the most dynamic, complex
songs Deschanel has ever written, allowing for tempo shifts, disco
grooves, string arrangements on multiple tracks, and horn flourishes
that perfectly suit the She & Him sound. Produced by M. Ward and
recorded in Los Angeles, Portland, and New York City, Volume 3
features guest contributions from NRBQ's Joey Spampinato, Mike
Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley, and Tom
    Hagerman from Devotchka.

Since the release of the band's album Volume Two in 2010, much
has happened to both She and to Him. Deschanel, whose television
show New Girl has cemented her status as a sitcom star, continued
to hone her songwriting skills, writing the theme song for her new
show in addition to being nominated for a GRAMMY for Best
Original Song for the movie Winnie the Pooh. She wrote songs for
Volume 3 during small pockets of downtime while filming New Girl,
as Ward toured the world behind his latest solo creation, A
Wasteland Companion, which was released to massive critical acclaim
last year. Together and separately, the duo has sold over a million
albums domestically-a testament to their classic sonic
arrangements, their rich, incomparable voices, and their ability to
craft pitch-perfect, Brill Building-esque choruses around timeless,
    universal themes

    Slipstream

Bonnie Raitt's new album Slipstream is daring, bluesy and steeped with the inimitable slide guitar and soulful vocals that could only be hers. Slipstream marks her first new release in seven years, and the debut for her newly minted label, Redwing Records.

While most of Slipstream is self-produced and features Raitt's longtime touring band, four of the album's songs were helmed by celebrated producer Joe Henry (Allen Toussaint, Solomon Burke) and showcase his unusual crew of extraordinary musicians. Additional guests include Bill Frisell, Al Anderson (NRBQ), Ireland's Paul Brady and Maia Sharp.

The album's 12-tracks feature Raitt's renditions of songs by such luminaries as Bob Dylan, Joe Henry and Loudon Wainwright III. An updated, reggae-fied version of Gerry Rafferty's Right Down the Line leads the charge here as the album's first single.

    Signs & Signifiers

Named as an artist you should know in 2011 by NPR, singer/songwriter JD McPherson makes his Rounder Records debut with the release of Signs & Signifiers which All Music calls a rockin', bluesy, forward-thinking album that subtly breaks the conventions of most vintage rock projects. McPherson is an artist with an unaffected take on vital American music and a voice that channels the spirit of Little Richard and James Brown.

The seductively kickass 12-song set finds this renaissance man/hepcat seamlessly meshing the old and the new, the primal and the sophisticated, on a work that will satisfy traditional American rock 'n' roll and R&B purists while also exhibiting McPherson's rarified gift for mixing and matching disparate stylistic shapes and textures. Recorded on analog equipment through vintage microphones and a 1960s Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine, Signs & Signifiers marks the arrival of an authentic, gutsy American artist.

Featuring JD McPherson (lead and backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sutton (bass), and Alex Hall (drums, piano, organ), the album also hosts an array of guest musicians, including Scott Ligon on piano (NRBQ's Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet); Jonathan Doyle (Nick Curran & the Lowlifes, White Ghost Shivers); Chicago's Josh Bell (The Del Moroccos) on tenor and baritone saxophones; Susan Voelz (Alejandro Escovedo, Poi Dog Pondering) on violin; Allison Chesley (Helen Money) on cello; and Joel Paterson (The Modern Sounds) lends choice guitar work to the Joey Simone classic Your Love (All That I'm Missing).

    Something In The Water

Pokey Lafarge and his band bring a focus and energy to the American Roots genre with infectious original material that sits at the crossroads of early jazz, country blues and western swing. With his effortless charisma and distinctive charm, Pokey has crafted a genre all his own--and one that extends well beyond the music alone.

Produced by Jimmy Sutton (best known for his work with JD McPherson), Something in the Water marks a new landmark in Pokey's career. The dozen-song set features a diverse cast of talented players, including Pokey's own longstanding touring combo as well as members of such notable outfits as NRBQ, the Fat Babies, the Modern Sounds, and the Western Elstons. Something in the Water finds Pokey expanding and deepening his musical reach on such new originals as the wry, rollicking title track, the swaggering ragtime workout "Wanna Be Your Man," the infectiously jazzy "Underground," the evocative crooner "Cairo, Illinois," the exotic ballad "Barcelona" and the swinging album-closer "Knocking the Dust off the Rust Belt Tonight," whose witty lyrics underline the album's proudly Midwestern sensibility.

    More Rain

    M. Ward has released a string of acclaimed solo albums over the past
several years, along with five LPs with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him
and a 2009 collaborative album with My Morning Jacket's Jim James
and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis under the moniker
Monsters of Folk. In addition to his celebrated work as a musician,
Ward is an accomplished producer, handling those duties for such
luminaries as Mavis Staples, Jenny Lewis, and Carlos Forster as well as
    his own musical projects.

More Rain, Ward's eighth solo affair, finds the artist picking up the
tempo and volume a bit from his previous release, 2012's A Wasteland
Companion. Where that record introspectively looked in from the
outside, More Rain finds Ward on the inside, gazing out. Begun four
years ago and imagined initially as a DIY doo-wop album that would
feature Ward experimenting with layering his own voice, it soon
branched out in different directions, a move that he credits largely to
his collaborators here who include R.E.M.'s Peter Buck, Neko Case,
k.d. lang, The Secret Sisters, and Joey Spampinato of NRBQ. The
result is a collection of upbeat, sonically ambitious yet canonically
familiar songs that both propel Ward's reach and satisfy longtime fans.

    Island Intervals

That Joel Thibodeau's slender, winsome voice is at once so comforting
and so unsettling might be the greatest of his many strengths. Reed-thin
but sturdy, youthful but somehow ageless, its deep benevolence is also
slightly eerie, and the way he gently walks the line between intense
feeling and contemplative remove lets him sing from a timeless place
where he evokes the beauty of vanished people and places, sweetness
too profound for words, loss too great for tears.

    Like Nico's, Jimmy Scott's, or Phil Elverum's, Joel's is a voice that
demands its own sonic and lyrical world, and with Island Intervals, his
third record as Death Vessel (and second for Sub Pop), we're treated to
the sound of him finding a rich and strange new home among new friends
in Iceland who probably saw him as a long-lost relative. Joel's an inveterate
and intuitive wanderer; when I met him years ago, he'd just spent a few
months traveling the United States on Greyhound buses, sometimes
sleeping rough, and making a record from found moments.

Island Intervals springs from a more recent journey. For his first album
since 2008's acclaimed Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us, Joel traveled
to Reykjavík on an invitation from Sigur Rós singer Jónsi and producer
Alex Somers, where they spent three months together conjuring an album
that's both a song cycle and a window into a mysterious and singular
landscape. Island Intervals wraps Joel's voice and furtive guitar in sounds
that evoke not so much a band playing as elemental forces of earth and
water; Pete Donnelly (The Figgs, NRBQ), Samuli Kosminen (Múm) and
Thorvaldur Doddi Thorvaldsson assist Somers in creating a rich and
multi-layered world that sounds, at times, like a well-tuned forest sighing
and bending in a gale, or the deep cracks and booms of a glacier calving
its way to the sea. Jónsi also joins Joel on vocals for the track "Ilsa
    Drown."

Island Intervals lives in the spaces between running away and letting
go, and finds its author embracing a life whose most solid, real moments
loom and vanish, like a range of mountains that emerges from a bank
of low clouds, and just as suddenly slips away.
