Its title refers to the group's native town, Compton, California. Production for the album was handled by Dr. Dre, with DJ Yella giving co-production. The album has been viewed as the pioneering record of gangsta rap; with its ever-present profanity and violent lyrics, it helped to give birth to this then-new sub-genre of hip hop. Digitally Remastered/EXPLICIT VERSION

The Chronic is the solo debut album of American hip hop artist Dr. Dre, released December 15, 1992, on his own record label Death Row Records, and distributed by Priority Records. Recording sessions for the album took place in June 1992 at Death Row Studios in Los Angeles and at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. The album is named after a slang term for high-grade marijuana, and its cover is an homage to Zig-Zag rolling papers. It was recorded by Dr. Dre following his departure from hip hop group N.W.A and its label Ruthless Records over a financial dispute, and consequently features both subtle and direct insults at Ruthless and its owner, former N.W.A-member Eazy-E. Although a solo album, it features many appearances by Snoop Dogg, who used the album as a launch pad for his own solo career.

Upon its release, The Chronic received positive reviews from most music critics and earned considerable sales success. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and has sold over three million copies, which led to Dr. Dre becoming one of the top ten best-selling American performing artists of 1993. Dr. Dre's production has been noted for founding and popularizing the G-funk sub-genre within gangsta rap. The Chronic has been widely regarded as one of the most important and influential albums of the 1990s and regarded by many fans and peers to be one of the most well-produced hip hop albums of all time.

    Death Certificate

If Ice Cube's debut was a shocking attack that proved the N.W.A legacy would be stronger divided, his sophomore effort was a new kind of superstar pulling off the miraculous, a follow-up that equals its classic predecessor and tops it in some people's books. With a million copies of Death Certificate preordered, Cube was no longer the rock critics' darling. A million people listening was dangerous, especially since he was now slithering his influence into the suburbs. If the black rage didn't get you, the misogyny of I'm gonna do my thing, with your daughter probably would. Here, one of rap's greatest storytellers is able to draw hatred in under a minute with the short and direct Black Korea, an angry protest song concerning Korean grocers that got him dubbed racist and Ice KKKube by some. The track is an extreme representation of how a much sharper and cutting this album is when compared with his debut, and even though the intro announces the full-length is divided into a Death Side and Life Side, both are equally bleak. With the CD format, the two sides are indistinguishable and run over the listener with fast tales of drug dealing, drive-by shootings, and women who go from Ms. Thing to Ms. Gonorrhea. This would be numbing if it weren't for the rapper's amazing lyrics, ground-shaking delivery, and insight like when A Bird in the Hand deals with the irony of selling crap to buy diapers (Gotta serve you food that might give you cancer/Cuz my son doesn't take no for answer). A bit of sweet relief comes with the brightness of the great single Steady Mobbin' and with the nostalgia and slow tempo of Doing Dumb Shit. True to the Game (Ain't that a bitch/They hate to see a young nigga rich) is arguably the quintessential Cube track and if all this weren't enough already, the N.W.A diss No Vaseline hangs off the album like a crowd-pleasing, Brick-sampling encore. Although next year's Predator would be a bigger hit, Death Certificate brings to a close the man's trilogy of perfect albums that began with N.W.A's Compton and explodes into a supernova right here.

Eazy Duz It (25th Anniversary Edition)

    Remastered 25th Anniversary Edition

Released only a month after Straight Outta Compton (1988), Eazy-Duz-It was the first N.W.A spin-off album. Years before Ice Cube went solo with Amerikkka's Most Wanted (1990), before Dr. Dre changed the rap game with The Chronic (1992), before MC Ren struggled to establish himself with Shock of the Hour (1993), and before Yella simply fell into obscurity, Eazy-E rose to immediate superstar status with this solo debut. It's no wonder why, for the album plays like a humorous, self-centered twist on Straight Outta Compton with Eazy-E, the most charismatic member of N.W.A, front and center while his associates are busy behind the scenes, producing the beats and writing the songs.

In terms of production, Dr. Dre and Yella meld together P-Funk, Def Jam-style hip-hop, and the leftover electro sounds of mid-'80s Los Angeles, creating a dense, funky, and thoroughly unique style of their own. In terms of songwriting, the D.O.C., Ice Cube, and MC Ren are each credited; plus, Ren performs raps of his own on five of the 12 songs.

The collaborative nature of the music -- with Dre and Yella producing; the D.O.C., Ice Cube, and MC Ren writing the songs; MC Ren featured as a guest on half of them; and Eazy-E performing -- fortunately makes Eazy-Duz-It more of an N.W.A effort than a true solo album. This is fortunate because as charismatic as he may be, Eazy-E isn't an especially gifted MC. He's at his best here when he's cracking wise and also when he's overshadowed by Dr. Dre's productions, particularly on the four-song sequence of Eazy Duz It, We Want Eazy, Eazy-er Said Than Dunn, and Radio -- all heavily produced songs with layers upon layers of samples and beats competing with Eazy-E's rhymes for attention.

Straight Outta Compton is no doubt the more revolutionary album, yet Eazy-Duz-It is a great companion, showcasing N.W.A's sense of humor and, despite the often violent subject matter, casting them in a lighter, more humorous mood. When Eazy-E would return with a second solo release, 5150 Home 4 tha Sick, his N.W.A associates would be M.I.A. and the difference would be stark.

Explorations, recorded on February 2, 1961, was Bill Evans fourth LP as a leader and the second studio album by the legendary Evans trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian. The Evans-LaFaro-Motian Trio would reach a climax with their June 25, 1961 club recordings at the Village Vanguard in New York. LaFaro would die in a car accident just ten days later, at the age of 25. Evans was so shocked by his bassist's death that he waited a long time before forming a new trio.

The Complete, Historic, All-Star Recording Session Of Decemeber 24, 1954. Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants is an album recorded by Miles Davis, for Prestige Records. Most of the album comes from a session on December 24th 1954, but 'Round Midnight is from the sessions by Davis's new quintet in 1956 which resulted in Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet and three other albums to fulfill Davis's contract with Prestige.

The 1954 session is notable as the only time Thelonious Monk made a studio recording with Davis - the two men did not get on well, as Davis felt Monk ought to be laying out (refraining from playing) during the trumpeter's solos. Ira Gitler, who was present at the session and wrote the sleeve notes for the album, dispels the myth that the two men confronted each other physically, but there was argument throughout the session. The first take of The Man I Love has a false start caused by Monk asking when he should start playing, and an exasperated Davis telling engineer Rudy Van Gelder, Hey Rudy, put this on the record, man - all of it!.

An unusual album in the Louis Armstrong canon, this collection of gospel songs, spirituals, homilies, and comic vignettes was the only religious album this determinedly secular musician recorded. Backed by a gospel vocal group led by the celebrated jazz arranger Sy Oliver, Armstrong performs a variety of religious-themed favorites, including Ezekiel Saw De Wheel, Going to Shout All Over God's Heaven, and Didn't it Rain, as well as Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat from GUYS AND DOLLS. There's an affecting version of the traditional spiritual Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child, and a particular highlight is the inclusion of two comic sermons by the musician's alter ego, Elder Eatmore.

    1. Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen
    2. Shadrack

The superb November 1960 session recorded by the Ben Webster Johnny Hodges sextet in studio conditions at the Jazz Cellar, in San Francisco without an audience. The two great saxophonists were the only horn players heard at the session. They were backed by a rhythm section of piano, guitar, bass and drums. These recordings are exceptional in that no other date exists in their collaborative featuring them as the only horns.
