    The Lost Tapes

The discovery of WITCHFYNDE's Lost Tapes illuminates a fascinating missing link in the history of British heavy metal. In the lull between the Purple/Zeppelin/Sabbath revolution and the angry charge of punk rock and NWOBHM, in the East Midlands county town of Derby, four lads came together to create a tentatively progressive and intriguing new sound, and get heads banging in boozers all over the Peak District. Recording a 40-minute demo of original material in 1975, WITCHFYNDE were the unwitting spearhead of the movement that was still a long way off being dubbed the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, and from the plaintive, spacey opening of Grimoire, this earliest of artefacts is rather more nuanced and versatile than the hallowed acronym NWOBHM traditionally suggests.

Even though they raised many tavern roofs in the mid-late 70s, this isn't your standard thick-eared pub metal. On this recording you can hear these young musicians enjoying playing their first songs together, sharing varied influences and building mystical atmospheres out of extended jams with quirky interplay and a relaxed delivery. Behind the odd forgivable bum note, missed beat or overstretched solo you sense the exploratory zeal of four music-obsessed friends casting their net wide: from the sprightly power-pop groove of Madam Noname to the creepy proto-doom of Halfway, with Pastiche somehow English gothic country rock and Slow Down having the feel of an epic melancholy folk ballad.

WITCHFYNDE released four albums from 1980-84, but split up due to line-up and label instability. Reactivated for the millennium, they continue to record and gig sporadically. Andro formed ZXY in 2010, and has announced that he'll be back on the road in 2014 on the Andro Coulton Gives 'Em Hell: Witchfynde Revisited 1975-1980 And Beyond! Tour.

    At The Edge Of Damnation

Merging at the tail end of the NWOBHM scene, Brighton-based band Deathwish, along with bands like Onslaught and Xentrix, was part of the UK's answer to the emerging Bay Area thrash scene in the US. With their high-speed riffing, heavy rhythms, hardcore influences and sinister lyrical themes, Deathwish was a band that stood out from the pack but never really saw the success they truly deserved. 1988's Demon Preacher was the band's second (and final) album, and it still holds up as a classic of UK thrash metal.

Album Has Been Restored From Original Masters And Remastered By Anders Peterson @ GS Mastering & Post, Sweden

For the first time since its original release in 1984, Wax Maniax is very proud to bring the essential debut album from NWOBHM cult-metal legends CLOVEN HOOF back to vinyl!

Originally formed in the heart of the industrial West Midlands, England in 1979, CLOVEN HOOF went through various line up changes until Spring 1982 when the band line up consisted of Lee Payne bass guitar, David Potter vocals, Steve Rounds lead guitar and Kevin Pountney drums. The band's first demo tape was given the thumbs up from no lesser than Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) who took a copy of the tape into national Radio One, and Rob Halford (Judas Priest) who got it played on a radio station in Phoenix, Arizona. The band self-released "The Opening Ritual", a four track mini album in July of 1982, and the EP stayed in the "Sounds" and "Kerrang!" heavy metal charts for six weeks peaking at number 18. Articles in "Kerrang!" and "Noise" magazine were followed by renkown Sounds writer and Kerrang! Magazine founder Geoff Barton putting the band atop his prestigious "Breaking through in '82" feature and play list.

"The Opening Ritual" attained extensive radio air play worldwide but it wasn't until Tommy Vance played tracks off the EP on his legendary "Friday Rock Show" program on Radio One in the UK that interest in Cloven Hoof began to soar. 1983 saw Cloven Hoof touring throughout the United Kingdom, earning themselves a sizeable underground cult following. Soon afterwards the group were taken under the wing of ex-Judas Priest manager David Hemmings and an offer to sign the band from CBS Records soon followed.

Personality conflicts within the band, followed by the untimely death of manager David Hemmings put a strain on relations with CBS and the offer was withdrawn. In order to keep the momentum built by the band's live appearances and radio play going, the band instead looked to leading UK independent heavy metal label Neat Records where a deal was quickly struck. The band entered the label's Impulse Studio with reknown producer Keith Nichol (Venom, Satan, Raven, etc..) to record their self-titled debut album which was met with great adulation by the heavy metal press. Shortly thereafter, frontman Dave Potter left the band to join French metal unit "H-Bomb". Cloven Hoof soldiered on, releasing a live album in 1986 with new frontman Rob Kendrick (Trapeze, Budgie) followed by a second studio album in 1988 featuring an all-new lineup including Russ North of post-Budgie group Tredegar on vocals. Three more full-length studio albums would follow, the most recent released in 2014. The band continues to soldier on to this day with Lee Payne at the helm, enjoying a strong cult following both young and old, ushered in by the internet age that has seen their 1984 debut album topping lists of the best and most influential heavy metal albums of all time.

    Saxon

Saxon, over the decades have gone from being pioneers of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, to becoming one of the most successful UK rock acts of all time. The truth, though, is that Saxon have always transcended trends and eras. From 1979's 'Saxon' album to new album 'Thunderbolt', the band have enjoyed considerable success. Five Top 40 albums in the UK, with four Top 20 singles. And they were similarly successful in other parts of the world as well. It's no wonder their influence spread across the globe, and played a crucial role in the way we look at hard rock and heavy metal today.

Saxon's self-titled debut album was originally released on 21st May 1979 and is arguably the first NWOBHM album to be committed to tape. It took the new sound of NWOBHM and paired it up with their early progressive and glam rock influences. It was the band in their infancy but ultimately put them on the map as one of the bands spearheading the heavy metal revival that was sweeping the nation at that the end of the seventies.

This version includes their early demo when the band were called Son Of A Bitch, some early BBC session tracks and some live songs from the inaugural Monsters of Rock festival.

    Death Penalty

Witchfinder General are a doom metal band from Stourbridge, England. They were part of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene and have been cited as a major influence on the doom metal genre. Death Penalty is the debut album by NWOBHM band Witchfinder General. It was released in 1982 on Heavy Metal Records. The album received some criticism for the cover photograph, which featured topless model Joanne Latham. The photograph had been taken in the yard of St Mary the Blessed Virgin Church in Enville, Staffordshire, without the permission of the local Reverend. The album was originally released on LP and picture disc and was later reissued on CD. Pictured on the cover is Phil Cope, Zeeb Parkes, Graham Ditchfield and a member of the then Road Crew. While Peter Hinton is credited with producing this recording the writers Phil Cope and Zeeb Parkes always felt the credit should have gone to the engineer Robin George.

Formed in Athens, Ohio, Skeletonwitch has been launching Metal assaults on an unsuspecting underground since 2003. The members of The Witch are bonded by the universal truth, that Heavy Metal is the law, thereby unleashing the band's brand of ripping, epic Thrash. Everything begins with the purity and aggression of the '80s Bay Area Thrash scene, but Skeletonwitch further fuels its evil onslaught with elements of Black and Viking Metal while proudly waving the NWOBHM flag. Imagine a young Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Exodus slamming beers and cranking up Immortal records at a rager in 1985. Just when you think the keg is killed, Judas Priest joins the party with a fresh case of beer.

    First-Ever Vinyl Reissue

This lost 1982 NWOBHM classic foretold the emergence of speed and thrash metal with high RPM work-outs like Coldheart, No Lies, and Dutch Connection. Was it a coincidence that Metallica's Kill 'Em All came out the following year? Maybe, but one could easily suspect that Power Games was on the Metallica turntable.

Jaguar along with Bronze label-mates Raven was definitely the most balls-out outfit in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal scene, and this record, aside from one mid-tempo track (Rawdeal) is pure pedal-to-the-metal metal.

    Decade Of The Eagle

From being pioneers of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal,
to becoming one of the most successful UK rock acts of all time,
Saxon have always transcended definitions, trends and eras.
From 1979's Saxon album to Destiny in '88, the band enjoyed
considerable success both in the UK and further afield. It's no
wonder their influence has spread across the globe, and played
a crucial role in the way we look at hard rock and heavy metal
today. The decade from '79's debut record was vital, not only in
establishing Saxon's talent and reputation, but also in laying the
    foundations for what has followed.

BMG are proud to release this anthology that looks back at the
years which built the Saxon legend. Spanning their first nine albums
DECADE OF THE EAGLE is the very best of the first decade of their
astonishing career. This anthology represents the sweep and scope
of what Saxon have achieved. They were certainly a core part
of the whole NWOBHM movement, perhaps the greatest metal
genre of them all, but moved beyond this to become one of the
all-time masters of heavy metal. But in doing so, Saxon have also
ensured they are now representative of the heart and soul from
the NWOBHM time. They have done this by remaining true to the
values which established them in the first place. Driven by a desire
to continuously set the highest standards and meet them head on,
Saxon's work on those nine studio albums still resonates resoundingly.
From "Rainbow Theme," the opening track on that debut, to
"Red Alert," the closing song on Destiny, this is timeless stuff. Music
that will continue to inspire metalheads for generations to come,
as it has influenced so may up until now. In those immortal words,

San Francisco's Deafheaven found massive critical success when their 2013 album Sunbather was an unexpected crossover hit, earning the band a 92/100 Metacritic score and ending the year as the best reviewed album of 2013. No one could have anticipated a band that drew from equal parts Weakling and My Bloody Valentine ascending to such heights, and that incomprehensibility added to the band's singularity and allure.

Two years later, founding members George Clarke and Kerry McCoy began working on their ANTI debut, New Bermuda, with a new perspective. Says Clarke: "Sunbather yearned for something better. New Bermuda focuses on the idea of false promise, achieving something and wondering if it's what you really wanted in the first place." McCoy shares that sentiment: "Sunbather sounds like people who have nothing but are satisfied with life. There's an uplifting quality to it. But New Bermuda is a very tense record." McCoy cites death metal demigods Dissection and Morbid Angel, the blackened death pioneers Behemoth, and Cliff Burton-era Metallica as influences on the new album.

As New Bermuda progresses, Deafheaven travels further outside of their comfort zone, feasting on other niches of underground metal and offsetting the blunt force of their feral rage with more complex and nuanced beauty. A sophisticated and subdued pop element kicks off "Baby Blue", before the band abruptly shifts into an amalgam of NWOBHM's anthemic urgency and thrash metal's racing chugs. There's a brief comedown where the band veers into the musique concrete soundscapes and hushed melodrama of early Godspeed You! Black Emperor before "Come Back" resumes the band's merciless assault of stampeding drums and vitriolic guitar harmonies, only to shift mid-song into the somber territories of 4AD's early catalog. Which is not to say that Deafheaven have softened their approach; New Bermuda offers the most punishing music of the band's career in the wake of their greatest success.

Ramming Speed have signed to Prosthetic Records, and, surprisingly enough, crafted the follow-up to 2008s Brainwreck full-length.

Titled Doomed To Destroy, Destined To Die and tracked by Converge studio wizard Kurt Ballou, Ramming Speed's second will catapult them from cult, from-the-corner thrash act to recognized purveyors of NWOBHM/grind hybrid. If you haven't heard the Beantown beatnuts, picture DRI covering Napalm Death (early) or Repulsion doing Iron Maiden (early) interpretive runs. Bleeder

Bleeder was recorded by drummer Ben Koller's Converge bandmate Kurt Ballou at his GodCity studio in Salem, MA. While Helium Head was recorded as a duo, the upcoming LP expands the original lineup of Koller and vocalist/guitarist Stephen Brodsky to include bassist Nick Cageao. The album is said to have bigger production, increased ferocity, and the bolstered confidence from writing as a three-piece unit, offering up everything from hardcore, to NWOBHM-styled arrangements, to sludge. The album's 1000 Mile Stare and Soft Spot in My Skull apparently blend thrash with King Crimson-minded prog, while other touchstones include Ronnie James Dio-period Black Sabbath.

    Picture Disc

2007's Beyond The Permafrost is the second overall album and debut release for Prosthetic Records from the acclaimed Ohio metal quintet Skeletonwitch. The Witchs mighty, sonic fortress is an amalgamation of classic Bay Area thrash, Scandinavian death/black metal and NWOBHM. The band brings together the old and sacred elements of true heavy metal here, melts them down, and forges them into a brand new monolith of riffage.

The Cory Smoot (Municipal Waste, GWAR) produced 12-song set received numerous accolades in the U.S. and overseas upon its original release and landed on many year-end 'Best Of' lists including Revolver, Decibel and Pitchfork. Tracks like opener Upon Wings of Black, the title cut and Fire from the Sky are pumping with sinister themes, shredding guitars and blood curdling screams.

    Generation Void

3rd full length album by Iron Man.

Maryland-spawned doom titans Iron Man seemed to drop off the face of the earth after their first two albums, 1993's Black Night and 1994's The Passage, shook the heavy metal world by the scruff of its neck and forced it to bang any head that didn't already bang, as Metallica would have put it. With little rhyme or reason, all of five years would elapse until the group's return to activity via 1999's Generation Void LP, squandering any upward momentum Iron Man might have attained, but belatedly proving that they remained a force to be reckoned with when they actually showed up. So let's take it from the top: most fans and critics would agree that Iron Man's strengths always lay in energized doom templates, and the latest songs cut from that cloth on this album, such as On the Mountain, Boston Strangler, and As the Gods Have Spoken, definitely didn't disappoint this time around, either. At the same time, less orthodox new offerings like Forever Yours and Shadows of Darkness continued to broaden Iron Man's creative resources with leaner heavy metal styles (the N.W.O.B.H.M., for example) and rock-based qualities, revealing that the intervening years of inactivity didn't elapse without some sonic transformation. In fact, stately metal ballads like Winds of Change and the album's title track recalled classic mid-'70s efforts by Judas Priest like Beyond the Realms of Death (with the added benefit of Morris' transcendent soloing), and, alongside tougher numbers like Survivor and King of Kings, which could very well have passed for Stained Class outtakes, they qualified Generation Void as the first Iron Man album where the band's deep-seated Black Sabbath influences were dethroned by another band's. But, given the typically strong material that resulted, there was little cause for complaint, especially from Iron Man's long deprived fan base, which would amazingly have to put up with another Rip Van Winkle-like ten years before getting their gauntlets on the band's fourth studio album, 2010's I Have Returned.
