    Oar

    Import

The Canadian-born Alexander 'Skip' Spence was the co-founder of Moby Grape, and played guitar with them until 1969.
In the same year he released his only solo album: 'Oar'.

The album was recorded after Spence had spent six months in a mental institution following a delusion-driven attempt to attack his Moby Grape band mates with a fire axe, after having ingested LSD.

As the urban myth goes, on the day of his release he drove a motorcycle, dressed in only his pajamas, directly to Nashville to record his only solo album. Fact is that he recorded this album in seven days, playing all the instruments himself and that the end result is now considered to be a classic psychedelic folk album.

After this album Spence largely withdrew from the music industry.

    Oar

Sundazed is ecstatic to be able to reissue Spence's cult classic with original track listing, liner notes and photos intact. Spence-a founding member of seminal San Fran skullbenders Moby Grape-cut his only solo work in Nashville immediately after being released from New York's Bellevue Hospital late in 1968. Unavailable on the collector's market these days at any price, Oar vanished without a trace when first released in 1969. Frequently compared to the likes of Syd Barrett and Nick Drake, Spence's visionary work walks the tightrope between reality and delusion and remains a national treasure.

    Land Of The Sun

Two of Skip's rare post-Oar studio excursions; All My Life (I Love You), from '72, has the boisterous feel of Spence's best work with The Moby Grape, while Land Of The Sun, recorded in '96 with the X-Files in mind, sounds like nothing else under the sun, and finds Skip sonorously intoning a poem atop a psychedelic bed of sound.

    Moby Grape '69

Moby Grape followed the expansiveness of 1968s Wow with an unadorned, back-to-basics sound on this, their fourth long-player. Bob Mosleys understated vocal makes the ballad Its a Beautiful Day Today one of the great Grape tracks, Peter Lewis stately I Am Not Willing is still a stunner and Trucking Man and Ooh Mama Ooh show that nobody could rock a shuffle like guitarist Jerry Miller and company. Most of 69 was recorded as a quartet, with Skip Spence having just left the band. His parting gift, Seeing, is an alternately tender and tough tab of psychedelia that prefigures his rightly touted solo album, Oar.

    Strength To Survive

DC-based reggae rock act SOJA present their highly anticipated label debut, Strength To Survive on ATO Records. The 12-song set was produced by John Alagia (Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, O.A.R.)

SOJA plays in a realm similar to the one Ben Harper went towards on his album Fight For Your Mind and Citizen Cope echoed on Clarence Greenwood Recordings. You can clearly hear hope and love flowing through Jake Hemphill's voice as he sings original consciously minded reggae with the conviction of an old soul. - Jambase
