Grease SoundtrackIn 1978 the Grease soundtrack became a phenomenon. Its good-natured combination of doo wop and early rock & roll is infectious and charming, due in no small part to John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's charismatic, engaging performances. London-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Olivia Chaney follows her 2015 Nonesuch debut, The Longest River, with Shelter, also set for release via Nonesuch Records. The album was produced by Thomas Bartlett (David Byrne, Nico Muhly, The Magnetic Fields, Sufjan Stevens, The National, St. Vincent, Father John Misty, et al.) and features eight original songs, along with Chaney's interpretations of Purcell's O Solitude and Frank Harford and Tex Ritter's Long Time Gone, first recorded by the Everly Brothers.
Chaney describes her time writing songs for Shelter: I had been on the road a lot and was struggling with the grit and loneliness of urban life. I think I'd been questioning what home, belonging, a sense of purpose, and my own culture even meant. I'd been craving wilderness and a return to essentials for a long time. Then, while touring in the US, I realized the place I needed was already in my life. It was ancient, barely habitable, and remote.
Thus a crumbling eighteenth-century cottage in the austere but magical hills of the North Yorkshire Moors-a family retreat since my teens, with no electricity or plumbing, where the only water comes from a spring-became the home for my work on Shelter, she continues. We brought out an Arts and Crafts Bechstein piano and an old wood burner to the house; and as summer's end turned to autumn's shorter, colder days, the room with the upright and stove fueled my stay.
Chaney says of working with Thomas Bartlett, His close affiliation with such a varied and acclaimed group of artists was of enormous importance. His taste and sphere of understanding were as diverse as mine. He prioritized my compositions' meaning and lyricism, rather than jumping on the bandwagon of noisy popularity. I wanted a recording as intimate as the songs and their form. The only other musicians are Thomas and Jordan Hunt, my longtime collaborator who adds strings on select songs. It's just the three of us playing every sound you hear, using our instrumental and compositional craft, and Thomas' musician-producer's ear extraordinaire.
Born in Florence, Italy, Chaney grew up in Oxford, England, in a household whose intellectual and artistic engagement was complemented by an expansive musical soundscape. This included Billie Holiday, Mozart operas, Sandy Denny, Prince, Tracy Chapman, Bert Jansch, Michael Jackson, and Joni Mitchell. She studied at London's Royal Academy of Music, where she took in everything the conservatory had to offer. Her curiosity led her further afield, from Ligeti to West African pop, Edith Piaf to Laurie Anderson, Mary Margaret O'Hara to Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Sonic Youth to Sappho, Kate Bush to old-time country music-all while finding her own voice.
The range of artists she's shared a stage with includes Robert Plant, Zero 7, the Labeque Sisters, Martin and Eliza Carthy, and Kronos Quartet, with whom she also recorded two songs for the 2017 Nonesuch album Folk Songs. Most recently she fronted a Grammy-nominated album, The Queen of Hearts, forming a new outfit, Offa Rex, with The Decemberists. The Guardian's review of that album said that Chaney has a magical voice, full of heft, soul and sunlight, and fRoots said, Chaney has never sounded better, while the Arts Desk said it was her voice, with its clarity, power and emotional weight, that carries Offa Rex to the heights. The Financial Times added that Chaney's singing makes 'Willie O' Winsbury' one of the best versions ever.1. Shelter

Folk SongsWhen Nonesuch Records celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014, with festivals at London's Barbican Centre and New York's Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), Kronos Quartet joined forces with four labelmates-Sam Amidon, Olivia Chaney, Rhiannon Giddens, and Natalie Merchant-to perform a concert entitled Folk Songs. The Queen Of HeartsNonesuch Records will release The Queen of Hearts, the debut album from Offa Rex, an adventurous new project featuring English singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Olivia Chaney and The Decemberists. Produced and recorded by Tucker Martine (Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket, Neko Case) and Colin Meloy at Martine's studio in Portland, OR, and mostly arranged by Chaney, the thirteen tracks on The Queen of Hearts draw largely on traditional English-Irish-Scottish repertoire to create a transatlantic musical conversation that flirts with psychedelia and folk rock while maintaining its own inimitable identity.
The origins of Offa Rex can be traced to a tweet. Meloy, a fan of Olivia Chaney's 2015 Nonesuch debut, The Longest River, struck up a dialog with her over Twitter, which eventually led to her supporting The Decemberists on a U.S. tour. Chaney says: Every so often [on the tour] Colin and I would have these fleeting but quite intense conversations about songwriting and singing traditional songs. One night he asked me, grinning, 'Have you ever thought of having a backing group? We'll be your Albion Dance Band.'
Meloy adds: "There's this weird relationship between British and American music, this interesting trade and theft that goes back and forth. My hope was that if we-the neophytes, the dilettantes, the pretenders-brought Olivia to Portland to work with Tucker, perhaps these traditional British songs would be infused with something different. From the heady harpsichord swirl that engulfs album opener The Queen of Hearts to the warm, delicate drone of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, or the cold, grey riff that heralds Sheepcrook and Black Dog, it's evident that Offa Rex is different indeed, upending its folk roots and imbuing these songs with exploratory verve.1. Verdugo HillsFive years ago, Caroline Lufkin made ripples across the Japanese pop music scene when she famously walked away from a lucrative major label contract that virtually guaranteed the same kind of bright-light super-stardom that made her sister Olivia a household name in Tokyo. Instead, Caroline took the long way; a slow, creatively fulfilling path where she writes, performs and records her own songs and owns her every success or failure, while taking pride in both.
Verdugo Hills builds upon the same minimalist, angelic pop that made her debut album, Murmurs, so striking. Having spent the past several years as a full-time member of the small musical army that is Mice Parade, Caroline has mastered the art of mingling a dozen or more distinct sounds to form miniature symphonies for the soul that can turn from an icy chill to a warm glow in the span of a few breaths. Her lyrical delivery and subject matter have matured enormously, exposing new depths to her emotional range to accompany the deceptively subdued mix of acoustic and electronic instrumentation.
Ultimately Verdugo Hills succeeds emphatically in giving electronic music a comforting heartbeat and a contemplative soul, feats Caroline were unlikely to accomplish had she taken the straight road to overnight fame and fortune. She has become an intriguing and understated figure in the world of electronic pop music, accelerating the genre with startling, unexpected beauty while leaving lasting impressions on all of us who are along for the ride.1. The New Sound Of Numbers is an experimental post-punk band based in Athens, Georgia. It is fronted by Hannah Jones on 12 string electric guitar and features members of Pylon and The Olivia Tremor Control.
Their album Invisible Magnetic is the follow up to Liberty Seeds, their debut album which as released in 2006 through Cloud Recordings.
The new album has a more celebratory feel than the first, and the driving rhythms and layered percussion lend themselves to both a sense of urgency and instant danceability. Violin, clarinet, melodica, synth, and trumpet beautifully interplay throughout the songs and occasionally take a turn towards music concrete while also bolstering the upbeat feel of the songs.
The Rhythms of Invisible Magnetic are even more tribal, with an African influence, than those of Liberty Seeds, whose songs were described by Electrelane's Mia Clarke in a review for Wire magazine as giving a nod to the Slits and Lizzie Mercier Descloux.
The New Sound Of Numbers can be placed categorically alongside fellow Athenians Pylon and the B-52's.1. Invisible Magnetic

WordsCo-produced by Evans & Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood & Rascal Flatts), Words is the first full studio album release from Sara Evans in over 3 years. Lead by the first single "Marquee Sign," the album is comprised of 13 new original songs along with an acoustic version of her #1 single "A Little Bit Stronger."
"When I'm listening to a song, it's the lyrics and the stories they tell that matter most to me," Sara said. "Not only is 'Words' the title to one of the songs on my album but in listening to new music for the record, I was always looking for lyrics that moved me and expressed a powerful range of emotions. Women are natural storytellers and I'm proud to have so many amazing female songwriters represented on this record."
Words marks a creative reunion for Evans, pairing her with frequent co-producer Mark Bright (2005's Real Fine Place, 2014's Slow Me Down) while Tracy Gershon provides A&R direction. Her daughter Olivia even contributes background vocals to the record.1. Long Way Down

SZA's new album, Ctrl, is set for release on vinyl via RCA Records.
Featuring Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, James Fauntleroy and Isaiah Rashad, Ctrl has been revered for its raw and honest lyrics and garnered praise from celebrities (Calvin Harris, Diddy, Issa Rae, Bella Hadid, Olivia O'Brien), influencers (Karen Civil, Scottie Beam), fans and critics alike.
Noisey describes Ctrl as "14 tracks of the dreamy R&B lusciousness that we've come to know and love the New Jersey singer-songwriter for." NPR calls Ctrl "a resolutely confident and skillful R&B album that explores the notions of control and honesty," while The Shade Room proclaims, "'Ctrl' is actuals! Imagine 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' tailored for our generation."
One of the redefining voices of today's contemporary music era, SZA entered the music scene in 2012 with her first critically acclaimed EP, See.SZA.Run. Following that, she released S in 2013 and Z in 2014, both to rave reviews. In 2013, SZA signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, being the first female artist to join the label. SZA wrote and performed on Rihanna's Anti single "Consideration" in 2016 and helped write Nicki Minaj and Beyonce's "Feelin Myself" in 2014.
Born in St. Louis and raised in Maplewood, NJ as Solána Rowe, SZA grew up listening to classic and avant-garde jazz, alternative, and rap. She renamed herself finding inspiration within the Supreme Alphabet: the 'S' stands for savior or sovereign, the 'Z' for zig-zag, and the 'A' for Allah.LP 1

Axxa / AbraxasAxxa/Abraxas is the music and art project of Ben Asbury, a 23 year old from outside
Atlanta, GA. His experiences as a record collector and music obsessive from a very young
age ("I got into punk in the third grade") are easily evident in his debut release. Going full
circle from being introduced to 60's pop as a kid, through his foray into punk rock at an
early age, into post-rock and Elephant Six indie, right back into 60's Psychedelia, Ben has
honed his influences (Neil Young, Television Personalities, 'Elevators, The 'Dead, Olivia Tremor
Control) into a cohesive blend to adapt his own take on psych-influenced art-pop.
The tracks on the record were written and demo'ed around the time Ben was in college
(and shortly after) in Athens, GA where he was studying psychology, religion and sociology...
as well as developing a fascination with analog synth that made it's way into his mix of
influences. Meanwhile, he started the RTA Collective, which featured his cassette and CDR
releases along with his visual art. This combination arrived in a package to the Captured
Tracks office in the form of a demo that stood out amongst the hundreds of others with it's
charged DiY silkscreen imagery and poppy fuzz psych music.
The label enlisted Jarvis Taveniere (Woods, Rear House Recording) to record and produce
what would become Axxa/Abraxas debut. It's the artistic culmination of prodigious young
songwriter putting it all together in an erudite way despite his tendency to write lyrics which
are"...generally directed at myself, often criticizing my shortcomings..." No matter how he
criticizes himself, one need only listen to the record to see he's quite confident in his music.1. Ryan Michalak (Is Coming to Town)

FainRecorded in a beautiful and isolated house in the Yorkshire Dales, Fain is the sound of a band at the peak of their creative powers. It's an honest and natural album that allows its stories, its melodies, its themes and structures to breathe. The album draws on more traditional English and Scottish folk melodies than anything they've done before, but not straying from the drop-out fuzz-rock route they've made their own, the influences are vast - British rock bands like Groundhogs, Dark, Mighty Baby and Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac are evident in the swirling and distorted guitars throughout Fain, along with the 60s revival folk of Fairport Convention, Nic Jones, and Trees. Additionally they have looked towards Scandinavian's rich psychedelic tradition both new and old - you can hear the likes of Mecki Mark Men, Mikael Ramel and contemporaries Dungen. You can even hear the band's teenage forays into Hip-Hop in the drums of 'Thief' and 'Athol'.
It rained constantly throughout the recording process and the house was so packed with gear and recording equipment the band were forced to sleep in tents and caravans parked outside. Whilst performing, they could look out into the vast countryside and catch sight of buzzards, hares, curlews and hundreds upon hundreds of crows and gulls. The fire was on permanently, overnight and throughout the day. A serene experience that informs every track on the album. It was mixed and finished in the equally rainy London, with additional performances from Olivia Chaney on piano and backing vocals, plus Nic Kearey and Rachel Davies of Stick in the Wheel and Various (XL). Jace Lasek (Besnard Lakes) recorded backing vocals in Vancouver remotely for All Returns.
As evidenced by the first single All Returns, Fain is more lyrically focused than anything they've previously recorded.. The song tells the story of a dream Jack Sharp (guitars/vocals) had during which an acquaintance had looked into his eyes and seen into his soul whilst calmly describing his faults and inner demons, a truly cathartic experience. However, says Sharp, his life is largely too banal for material and he largely draws upon snapshots of history to furnish him with the ideas for lyrics. Stand out track Thief is taken from various stories of highwaymen that had been made famous by broadsheet ballads and plays - the likes of Charles Peace, William Nevison, Jonathan Wild and Jack Sheppard. He delivers this story in first person, almost as if he is playing the part of a complete degenerate with little or no conscience or morals. As Sharp says, It's like a form of tourism. You can visit but not live in the mind of an appalling human being.Empty Vessels

I'm at a loss to name any bands that Old Smokey sounds like. Old Smokey is a dark, gypsy/Middle Eastern, folk collision. It's a mixture of string and woodwind instruments unlike any I've seen. - Mark Ellers, Athens Banner Herald
Old Smokey's instrumental tune Leggy, is a pleasant, wandering thing, a nice little taste of the band's upcoming full-length, reportedly titled Wester Easter. - Gabe Vodicka, Flagpole Magazine
Local weavers of the string dream known as Old Smokey have finished their debut record, titled Wester Easter and may we say, it's an ear tickling treasure for sure. - Zeke Sayer, Gypsy Farm
Old Smokey is a unique five piece ensemble featuring Jim Willingham on banjo, Jason Trahan on lap steel, John Fernandes on violin/clarinet/bass clarinet, Jacob Morris on cello, and Rob Lomax on drums. Their quixotic and sometimes haunting sound has developed organically; the way the instrumentation of the band blends is both complementary and evocative. This distinctive unit began playing together over two years ago. Old Smokey's first full-length album, Wester Easter will be released on Cloud Recordings.
Wester Easter covers a wide span of musical influences, but retains a coherent sound, all its own. Some of the songs capture an Ennio Morricone spaghetti-western influence, while others take on an East Indian psychedelic palette not unlike some of the wanderings of Erkin Koray, or a lost Bollywood soundtrack from the seventies. Dead Man's Pose, a chant-y upbeat scorcher, is grounded in something akin to a New Orleans second line structure. There are a few numbers on Wester Easter that seem to be channeling the tumbleweed landscapes of The Sons of Pioneers, or the smoky country of a Roger Miller ballad. There's even a bit of a rock n' roll stomp or Velvets' rattle to numbers such as All the Way Slow -- but it's almost as if the band got lost in Appalachia on the way to the sock hop. John Fernandes, Cloud Recordings' main-man, and Old Smokey's violin and clarinet player, has approximated sonic references for Old Smokey: Fans of Bruce Langhorne, Abner Jay, Bollywood steel guitar music, and The Monks will surely dig our hard to describe sound.
Despite a wide adventurous berth, Wester Easter is not the soundtrack of a flippant genre-jumping band. Throughout the album, their strong, sonorous mark is consistently there, as the instruments blend, swirl, and crescendo, then break down, from time to time, into the spidery banjo, drums, and plucked-cello skeletal substructure. Led by Jim's reedy lead vocal, spinning narratives or spilling out constellations of imagery, the whole band often joins, in chorus, to create layered harmonies or group chants.
Old Smokey is compiled of veterans of the Athens music scene. Members have played with bands such as The Olivia Tremor Control, Circulatory System, Vic Chesnutt, Ham1, Moths, Madeline, The Good Ship, and The New Sound of Numbers, to name just a few of their past and current projects.1. Juliana Hatfield is an American musician and singer songwriter from New England formerly of the indie rock bands Blake Babies, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Some Girls and the Lemonheads. She has also performed and recorded as one half of Minor Alps with Matthew Caws of Nada Surf and has performed with or made contributions to the Lemonheads, Belly, Giant Sand, Susanna Hoffs, Aimee Mann and Mary Lou Lord over the span of her career. Growing up in the Boston area, Hatfield acquired a love of rock music in the 1970s having been introduced to the Los Angeles punk band, "X." Hatfield transferred to the Berklee College of Music from Boston University, hoping to join a band. She formed the Blake Babies with Freda Love and John Strohm in 1986. She sang, played guitar, bass guitar and piano in the group. Blake Babies were signed to indie label, Mammoth Records, in North Carolina and received airplay on college radio during the early 1990s. Hatfield and Strohm shared songwriting duties and often sang together. The band toured the U.S. and Europe and made music videos. Hatfield received a degree in songwriting from Berklee during this period. The Blake Babies disbanded in 1991 but reunited briefly in 1999, performing shows that year and embarking on a US tour in 2001. They released the critically-acclaimed, "God Bless The Blake Babies," to coincide with the tour. Frequent collaborator, Evan Dando of the Lemonheads made a guest appearance on the album.
Following the immediate break-up of the Blake Babies back in 1991, Hatfield joined the Lemonheads to record their album, "It's A Shame About Ray," playing bass and providing back-up vocals. She played and sang with the band on and off between the years 1992-1993. Juliana released her first solo album, "Hey Babe," in 1992. The album was one of the highest selling independent albums of the year. She recruited a rhythm section consisting of former Moving Targets and Bullet LaVolta drummer Todd Phillips, and Thudpucker bassist Dean Fisher, becoming the Juliana Hatfield Three. The JH3 achieved arena-rock stardom with the release of 1993's "Become What You Are." Several songs from the album got regularly played on major US rock stations, with her song, "My Sister," becoming the biggest hit of her career. The song placed #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart and the video became a staple at MTV. The track "Spin the Bottle," was used in the soundtrack for the film "Reality Bites" in 1994 and Juliana made the cover of Spin magazine. In 1995 following the success of "Become What You Are," she released her follow up album, "Only Everything," in which she "turned up the volume and the distortion and had a lot of fun." The album, her first for Atlantic Records, spawned another alternative radio hit in "Universal Heartbeat." Before engaging on a tour for this record, Juliana released Phillips and hired Jason Sutter, Ed Slanker on guitar and Lisa Mednick on keyboards. Two weeks into the tour, she canceled remaining shows due to a bout with depression. She recently released two well received solo albums, "Pussycat" last year and "Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John" this year.
ROG will reissue her solo album "Only Everything," on vinyl since it debuted 23 years ago and make it available in the US for the first time with deluxe packaging.LP 1

Let Them Fall In LoveThe best-selling and most-awarded female gospel artist of all time, CeCe Winans has long since cemented her status as one of the most accomplished and celebrated women in modern music history. It'd be easy to look back and rest on such illustrious laurels, but Winans has always had her eyes fixed firmly on the future, so it should come as little surprise that she jumped at the opportunity when her son, Alvin Love III, proposed she record the generation-bridging new album 'Let Them Fall In Love.' Her first in nearly a decade, the record finds Winans returning to the studio with gusto, working for roughly three years to craft her most confident, adventurous collection yet.
Recording and performing as both a solo artist and as a duo with her brother BeBe, CeCe has influenced a generation of gospel and secular vocalists over the course of her astonishing career. Her mantel today holds a staggering 10 GRAMMY Awards, 20 Dove Awards, and 7 Stellar Awards. She's been inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the Nashville Music City Walk of Fame, in addition to being named a Trailblazer of Soul by BMI and garnering multiple NAACP Image Awards, Soul Train Awards, Essence Awards, and more. She's sold in excess of 5 million albums in the US, topping the Gospel charts repeatedly while crossing over with smashes like "Count On Me," her stunning duet with Whitney Houston from the multi-platinum 'Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack, which sold 2 million copies and cracked the Top 10 on the Pop, R&B, and Adult Contemporary charts. She touched millions more with inspirational performances everywhere from Oprah to The White House, and even showed off her acting chops on television series like '7th Heaven' and 'Doc.'
While collaborating with family is nothing new for Winans, the recording sessions for 'Let Them Fall In Love" found the Detroit native working for the very first time with her son in the producer's chair.
"Alvin shared with me a vision that he had of a record that was bold and a little different than anything I'd ever done before," remembers Winans. "When I heard the songs he'd been writing, I got so excited. He has great ears and great style and a unique way of writing and thinking things through. It made it extra special that two generations of family were able to come together on this record."
Bringing together generations is Winans' specialty, and she drew inspiration for the album from her extensive work with the young men and women who attend the church she and her husband founded in Nashville.
"It's really important to me to share where I've been and to encourage young people to understand that they can go even further," reflects Winans. "I wanted to make an album that ties us together, something that young people would be able to learn from and be inspired by."
Written primarily by Alvin and co-produced by Alvin along with Winans' long-time collaborator Tommy Sims (Garth Brooks, Michael McDonald, Bonnie Raitt), 'Let Them Fall In Love' was mixed by Dae Bennett (Tony Bennett, Amy Whinehouse, Olivia Newton John) and Jimmy Douglass (Pharrell Williams, Micheal Buble). The album, recorded both in Nashville and New York City, finds Winans more confident than ever before, merging eras and genres in a glorious blend of past and present that simultaneously recalls the heyday of Motown and still sounds undeniably modern. Big band horns meet strings from the Nashville String Machine as Winans' soaring voice hits new heights, fueled in part by the encouragement and motivation of her son.
"Alvin was hard on me in the studio," remembers Winans. "He'd really work me during the songs, and I knew that was a good thing because it meant he was pressing me to get the best performances possible. Now I listen back and I know he was right. It was so important to get the right interpretation of each song."
Winans is able to inhabit each song on the record so fully in part because she's lived their stories. She describes album opener "He's Never Failed Me Yet" as "my personal testimony," "Run To Him" as her frequent act of refuge, and "Marvelous" as a musical embodiment of the black church. On "Hey Devil!," she's joined by fellow gospel powerhouses The Clark Sisters for a playful rebuke of temptation, while "Peace From God" is a prayer for light in an increasingly dark world, and "Lowly" is a lesson about pride and humility aimed at the young men who might need it most. Winans' eclectic ability shines through on the pedal steel country waltz of "Why Me," a song she discovered when she was invited to perform it live with its writer, Kris Kristofferson.
"I ended up getting sick and I couldn't perform it with him at the show, but my son heard it and knew it would be perfect for the album," explains Winans. "It's so different for me in this whole new field of country music, but it spoke to my heart and I felt like it was written just for me."
On the album's other cover, "Dancing in The Spirit," Winans is joined by Hezekiah Walker and his choir for a jubilant celebration, while "Never Have To Be Alone" finds her taking a far more somber approach, singing to the young members of her congregation. It's the album's closer and title track, though, that seems to light Winans up more than any other.
"That was the first song for this album and I knew right away that I wanted the record to be named 'Let Them Fall In Love,'" she explains. "I told my son that it had to be the heartbeat of the album. There's a lot of different styles and a lot of strong messages on there, but all of them are to bring us to this point. It's why I came back and recorded another album, to express my heart and my desire that people young and old can listen and fall in love with the higher power, fall in love with love, and fall in love with faith and joy and peace."1.
