    Zones Without People

Whether paired with Taylor Richardson (Infinity Window) or solo (Oneohtrix Point Never), Daniel Lopatin rarely strays from the world of science fiction. Each synthesized note; each string of composition; each fractured note a piece of a world once brought to us by Carl Sagan and Leonard Nimoy. Zones Without People continues to explore the vast virginal openness that is space-and like the atmosphere he deftly reproduces in sound, Lopatin's boundaries are always contracting and expanding to create music for all beings of the universe.

Zones Without People is the spastic cousin of Clint Mansell's soundtrack to the sci-fi film, Moon. Where Mansell built spatial melodies around isolation, Lopatin's synth-and-bleep collage bridges the emptiness of space with the fertile imagination of the science geek in all of us. Zones Without People is the sound of haywire robots (Learning to Control Myself), malfunctioning spacecrafts (Format and Journey North), and shooting stars (Hyperdawn) all wrapped within the universe's infinite expansion. Rather than separate his 8-bit sound effects and his lush synth drones, Lopatin marries the two in perfect harmony. The mechanisms we've associated with space exploration thanks to countless films and documentaries are funneled through Lopatin's rich textures, producing the quintessential sci-fi album for anyone who adores how previous generations interpreted the music of the planets.

Daniel Lopatin does not shy away from the sounds of high school science films nor is he afraid of creating music with boundaries, which is why Zones Without People will continually amaze. Lopatin's latest puts a whole new spin on the clichÉ, It's a grower-as just in space, Zones Without People is ever-growing with the reverberations of one big bang.

    The Bling Ring Soundtrack

Def Jam releases the official soundtrack for The Bling Ring-- the new Sofia Coppola-directed, Emma Watson-starring film based on the true story of a group of kids in L.A. who robbed celebrities' homes.

The film was scored by Daniel Lopatin, aka synth experimentalist Oneohtrix Point Never, working with with longtime Coppola collaborator Brian Reitzell. Reitzell also served as the executive soundtrack producer and music supervisor, putting together a very eclectic mix of rap (Kanye, Azealia Banks, Rick Ross) and krautrock (Klaus Schulze, Can) plus the likes of Sleigh Bells, M.I.A., Frank Ocean, and Phoenix.

Lopatin and Reitzell previously worked on music for the Kelsey Grammer-starring television show Boss. Reitzell previously worked with Coppola on Marie Antoinette, Lost in Translation, and The Virgin Suicides. Lopatin and Reitzell also collaborated on a track for the Bling Ring soundtrack, Bling Ring Suite.

    The Caliph's Tea Party

For The Caliph's Tea Party, Gonjasufi assembled a collection of artists in his musical world and invited them to exchange ideas. In this spirit, the symbolic and musical centerpiece of the album, as well as its namesake, is the result of the mutual admiration formed between Gonjasufi and Broadcast and The Focus Group. A bewitching, drastic re-working of DedNd it takes the form of a suite of layered compositions and radiophonic transmissions.

Elsewhere, reinterpretations from new talents shine while established artists continue to surprise. Mark Pritchard (Harmonic313, Africa Hitech) channels Ennio Morricone with epic orchestral dystopia on his remix of Ancestors while retaining the inherent gravity of Flying Lotus' original production. Young guns Shlomo and Jeremiah Jae eschew their labeling as beatmakers and tap into a fractured emotional core within Change and Holidays, respectively, giving them new leases on life as subtly mechanized melancholia. Bibio smooths out the rough edges of Candylane for a remix indebted to the 1980's R&B leftfield, while Brooklyn's Bear In Heaven and Oneohtrix Point Never deal in heavy motorik meditations and ethereal musique concrete.

A playful electronic musical journey evocative of Eno's Music For Films, Oneohtrix Point Never, 8-bit soundtracks and prog-infused 70s synth epics; but executed with a rigorous conceptual framework worthy of John Cage or the radical film experiments of Lars Von Trier. Solarispellis is the follow up to Arandel's 2010 debut album In D and similarly continues to be entirely in his signature key (a nod to minimalist godfather Terry Riley). From woozy electronica to emotive techno and the most vertiginous krautrock - the tempos, Moods and subjects are intertwined, covering an array of musical territories despite the uniformity of the tonic note and chord. There is a paradox to the the intricate beauty of Solarispellis; an almost symphonic album recorded in the living room of a small apartment. The sounds suggest harpsichord, piano, organ or drops of water on a hot tin roof although almost every sound you hear was synthesized. There's a scholarly approach to the music but it does not require any effort on the audience's part.

    A Year With 13 Moons

On A Year With 13 Moons, Jefre Cantu-Ledesma is hitting
a new high. A companion to his last album Love Is A
Stream (Type, 2010), 13 Moons is a dense, swirling mass.
Hypnotic guitar and drum performances coalesce with
Modular synth squalls and otherworldly textures --
combining overdriven guitars, avant-garde composition (à
la Xenakis) with the informal approach of underground
tape weirdos (like Robert Turman, K. Leimer) into a lovely
    brocade of harmony and dissonance.

The album was recorded during a residency at the
Headlands Center for the Arts, which allowed Jefre the
time and freedom to let the music create itself in a way, to
lead me rather than trying to force it down a path. Cantu
was interested in ways of conveying memory in music
without being sentimental - translating the fog of images,
people and places that (he'd) experienced in the last two
years into a body of work that could still be ambiguous &
leave space for the listener to enter."

Cantu has released notable collaborations with Liz Harris
(aka Grouper) as Raum, with Alexis Georgopoulos of Arp
and The Alps, as well as filmmaker Paul Clipson. He also
founded the influential label, Root Strata, who have
released music by Oneohtrix Point Never, Keith Fullerton
    Whitman, and Grouper.

    Boo Boo

After 7 years of touring and recording, I found myself becoming self conscious about my position in life as a"famous" person, or at least my version of whatever that is. My dreams had become my reality, yet I was somehow unable to accept this new environment. I couldn't help but fall into what might be described as an identity crisis. A feedback loop of fearful thoughts left me feeling confused. I felt as though I no longer knew what it was that I actually wanted and needed in and out of life, and at times I felt unable to even tell what was real.

During this time of personal turmoil, I turned to music as a form of therapy, and it helped me cope with the pain that I was feeling. I'd listen to the same ambient song over and over again, trying to insulate myself from reality.I fell in love with space again.

By the time I felt ready to begin working on a new record,I knew that this idea of space within music would be something that propelled my new work forward. The artists that were influencing what I was making included everyone from Travis Scott to Daft Punk, Frank Ocean to Oneohtrix Point Never, Kashif and Gigi Masin. I recognized that the common thread between these artists was their attention to a feeling of space, or lack thereof.I decided that I wanted to make a Pop record with these ideas in mind. That idea for a record is what eventually became Boo Boo.

    async remodels

As one-third of Yellow Magic Orchestra and an Academy Award-winning composer for his work on the soundtrack for The Last Emperor, synth pop innovator Ryuichi Sakamoto is among the most groundbreaking artists to have emerged since the late 70s. A musician's musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto has created intriguing musical unions with artists such as David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, Tony Williams, Bootsy Collins, Jacques Morelenbaum and many others.

Following the massively successful release of the electronic masterpiece async in 2017, Ryuichi Sakamoto's first studio album in eight years, Milan is proud to announce the remix compilation async remodels. async remodels features a dozen remixes of async's tracks by a who's-who of experimental giants - everyone from Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, Sicario) to Oneohtrix Point Never (composer of Good Times) to Arca (producer of Bjork's numerous releases) have gotten their hands dirty remixing Sakamoto's work. Even reworks by the Canadian synthpop duo Electric Youth and Austin-based synthwave legends S U R V I V E are included.

    Tell Me I Belong

Jim-E Stack has come a long way. Born and raised in San Francisco, the now
Brooklyn-based artist born James Harmon Stack cut his musical teeth as a jazz
drummer, but it wasn't until he entered the world of solo production at the age of 16
that he found the freedom necessary to write and record how he wanted. After seeing a set from Fade to Mind boss Kingdom in 2009, freeform DJ sets and hybridized
club music planted the seeds of inspiration in the burgeoning producer. He made
his first splash with a bass-loaded remix of Nuguzunguzu's "Mirage", and went on
to release the bright and drum-focused Come Between EP, garnering acclaim from
    international DJs and tastemakers alike.

Following time spent in New Orleans, James moved to New York in summer of 2012,
and started the slow process of sketching, refining, and developing the diverse tracks
that would make up his captivating Tell Me I Belong LP. The album was equally
fleshed out by looking forwards and backwards, which gives it the kind of purpose
and cohesiveness many debut outings lack. In every corner of Tell Me I Belong, you
can hear an artist who reveres classic jazz musicians like John Coltrane and McCoy
Tyner, experimental pioneers like Steve Reich, and Detroit techno greats Omar-S
and Robert Hood, but contemporary boundary pushers Arca, Oneohtrix Point Never,
and Actress are no less inspiring for Stack. "More so than anything, it's really on
some personal shit," he says of the themes woven into his debut LP. "The time period
between leaving San Francisco and moving to New York was a tough time for me,
and the music is kind of a reflection of that, the feeling like you don't belong." The
music may speak about a kind of alienation, but it also abundantly offers the chance
of collective experiences in the form of hard-hitting, club-specific dancefloor jams.
That fearless juxtaposition is the lifeforce of Tell Me I Belong.

    Joy One Mile

Stellar OM Source's new album, Joy One Mile, marks a certain and spirited departure
into worlds unknown. A faithful leap into the infinite beat, Joy One Mile is the most
forward-reaching effort by Stellar OM Source yet.
Stellar OM Source originated from Christelle Gualdi's desire to unhinge from her
academic musical upbringing. A double bassist in the Konigin Katharina Stift
Schulorchester and a student of music theory at UniversitÉ Paris VIII, Gualdi
completed her studies in electro-acoustic composition at the Conservatoire de Paris
    after earning an architecture degree.

The process of Gualdi's "unlearning" began in experimental ensemble settings,
and it became more recognizable as she moved toward solo performance.
Stellar OM Source's name is fittingly inspired in part by the pathway to higher
consciousness and cosmos via one's own voice.

Gualdi was also inspired by-and also an integral member of-the late aughts
DIY synthesizer community. Alongside Oneohtrix Point Never, Emeralds and James Ferraro,
Stellar OM Source's stream of self-released CDRs defined a zeitgeist of artists
trending away from their noisy roots via polyphonic escapism.

Based many miles away from her US counterparts in The Hague, South Holland,
Gualdi received a prophetic sign in 2010 when a regional eBay seller offered her
a mint Roland TB-303 for a mere €25-or $33. The instantly identifiable sounds of
the analog bass synthesizer began appearing in Gualdi's studio and live practices.
By virtue of her many aspirations and the array of hardware that Gualdi brought
to the table, Joy One Mile took shape in chaos. Where this disorder might cripple
others, Gualdi's response was energetically and emotionally charged.

The freedom from form that Gualdi sought with Joy One Mile was ultimately
obtained, but the severe surge of the finished recordings left her over stimulated.
Striking a dialogue with Gunnar Wendel (aka Kassem Mosse), Gualdi realized an
objective opinion and arrangement know how would allow clarity and an even
greater freedom-that from her own music.

The singularity of Gualdi's compositions, when pulled back and recalibrated even
slightly, resemble early era Warp Records, and, by that admission, the wayward
electro of early-90s Detroit. The abstractions in Gualdi's programming and mutant
melodies is what keeps Joy One Mile perfectly relegated to outsider status, akin to
the primitive techno of Esplendor Geometrico and Chris & Cosey

Guillermo Scott Herren is a producer who has been based in Atlanta, Barcelona and New York City. Herren releases music under the aliases
Prefuse 73, Delarosa & Asora, Ahmad Szabo, and Piano Overlord, and is also part of the groups Savath y Savalas, Sons of the Morning, Fudge,
    Risil, and Diamond Watch Wrists.

Herren began his career working in commercial studios in Atlanta. Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives, his first album as Prefuse 73 -- after
lower-key releases as/with Delarosa, Delarosa & Asora, and Savath & Savalas -- not only buried but cut up and spliced voices as well as allowing
some more straightforward vocals from several MCs. The 2003 follow-up, One Word Extinguisher, carried on in a similar vein.

Surrounded by Silence, the successor to One Word Extinguisher, was released in 2005, featuring collaborations with rappers Ghostface and
Aesop Rock, plus Blonde Redhead and EL-P. Three months later, an EP of recordings made with the band the Books appeared, titled Reads the
Books. The next Prefuse record, 2006's Security Screenings, was relatively light on collaborations; it featured only two guests, Four Tet's Kieran
Hebden and TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe. Preparations, featuring Battles drummer John Stanier on one track, followed in 2007, and
Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian appeared in 2009. Herren focused on collaborative projects in 2010, flexing his production muscles via
dates, remixes, or cameos with everyone from Zach Hill (Diamond Watch Wrists) to Oneohtrix Point Never to TV on the Radio. His 2011
production The Only She Chapters continued the familial feeling, with a wealth of features for female vocalists.

A few years later, newly inspired, Herren returned to the Prefuse 73 moniker with a flurry of releases on Temporary Residence Limited -- an outlet
endorsed by friends Nigel Godrich (Ultraísta) and Hebden -- beginning with the 25th entry into the label's Travels in Constants EP series. The
album Rivington Não Rio, featuring guest appearances by Busdriver, Rob Crow, and Helado Negro, was flanked by the EPs Forsyth Gardens and
Every Color of Darkness. During that summer and fall, Herren recorded several sessions with MC Michael Christmas under the name Fudge. The
duo's playful debut full-length, Lady Parts, arrived on Lex Records in September of 2016.

Gabrielle Herbst's formal training began at an early age, studying
Balinese dance and gamelan in Indonesia while learning both the
clarinet and piano. Herbst continued her training at Bard College
where she studied voice and composition under the tutelage of
Joan Tower, Zeena Parkins and Marina Rosenfeld. Her work has
already been showcased at Robert Wilson's Watermill Center, as
well as Roulette, who in 2014 commissioned and premiered her
    first opera, Bodiless.

Herbst's experience writing for chamber orchestra and mixed
instrumentation inspired her to develop a repertoire of short-form,
vocal-centric compositions under the name GABI. These were
driven by solitary explorations in early 2013 with a dual-track loop
pedal. The nine songs composed for Sympathy embrace the vast
potential of the human voice as instrument, story, and landscape.

Sympathy was recorded in the studio where she was joined by her
band Matthew O'Koren (percussion), Rick Quantz (viola), Josh
Henderson (violin), and Aaron Roche (electric guitar, trombone).
With arrangement by Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) and
production by Paul Corley (Oneohtrix Point Never, Tim Hecker, Ben
Frost), these open-ended sessions yielded a suite of compositions
that capture Gabrielle's metamorphosis into GABI via an intimate
exploration along the the edges of song-form.

GABI renders past influences and new collaborations into a
personal statement on the desire for human connectivity and
    emotional catharsis.
