Open BookFred Hersch has long been acclaimed as an exploratory artist, an outspoken activist, an influential educator and a uniquely revelatory and lyrical pianist. As one of the most expressive voices in modern jazz, Hersch has never been shy about letting listeners glimpse his most intimate thoughts and emotions. In September, however, Hersch's fans will be treated to even deeper, more revealing insights into the story of the renowned pianist when he publishes his much-anticipated memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz. As a companion piece, Hersch decided to present an equally direct and vulnerable glimpse into his private musical thoughts with his 11th solo release, Open Book.
The seven pieces on Open Book (set for release via Palmetto Records) offer some of the finest, most unguardedly emotional solo music that Hersch has created in a career unique for its profound poignancy and passion. Recorded in a South Korean concert hall on a superb Hamburg Steinway concert grand piano, the album captures the vital essence of the revelatory adventurousness and intense beauty that have made Hersch one of the most important solo artists in jazz. With more than 40 albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, Hersch remarkably continues to discover new areas of inspiration and depths of feeling.
For the last two and a half decades I've been pretty open about who I am, what I like and what I'm dealing with at times, Hersch says. But I've always got to dig deeper, and I thought this might be a chance to make an album that's a window into the kinds of things that I play at home or don't play in public all that much.
The album arrives during a momentous month for Hersch. On September 12, the esteemed publishers Crown Archetype (Penguin Random House) will release Good Things Happen Slowly, Hersch's bravely confessional memoir. The book covers the pianist's meteoric rise in jazz from his sideman days alongside masters like Art Farmer and Joe Henderson to his gradual recognition as one of the most individualistic and innovative artists of his generation, a ten-time Grammy Award nominee and winner of countless accolades including being named a 2016 Doris Duke Artist as well as the same year's Jazz Journalists Association Pianist of the Year. But it also frankly reveals his story as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musician, tracing his path through hedonistic post-Stonewall New York City to the dramatic two-month medically induced coma in 2007 from which he emerged to make some of the most stunning and captivating music of his career.
Later that month Hersch will reprise his ambitious Leaves of Grass full-evening piece at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room, the first time the song cycle has been performed in New York City since 2005. Vocalists Kurt Elling and Kate McGarry will reprise their roles from the original project, which sets the verse of American bard Walt Whitman. The legendary poet's timeless ode to the miracle of nature and openhearted love of all beings seems especially vital in our present socio-political moment.
The centerpiece of Open Book, and the spark that ignited the album, is the nearly 20-minute improvisation Through the Forest. Unique in Hersch's extensive discography, the stream-of-consciousness gem is a miniature masterpiece of narrative development, a compelling journey through an abstract, glimmering landscape, revealing that in his early 60s Hersch continues to take creative risks and daunting inventive leaps.
The creation of Through the Forest was as unplanned and spontaneous as the music itself. In Seoul for a pair of solo concerts during a break in a tour of Asia with his esteemed trio, Hersch overslept during an after-breakfast nap and rushed to take the stage at JCC Art Center Concert Hall for his afternoon performance. The titular forest is, in part, a jetlag and coffee-fueled dreamscape through which Hersch wanders, applying his vivid powers of observation to unusual terrain. I was a little groggy, my defenses were down, and rather than fight it I just gave in to it, Hersch recalls. I'd never really done anything of that length in public where I had no agenda and was able to stay in that zone for such an extended period of time. I realized it was something special, something different that might be the core of an album.
Through the Forest became the leaping-off point for an album intended to be singularly divulgent and reflective. A few months later, Hersch returned to the same hall and recorded the remainder of Open Book alone in the empty venue (with the exception of Benny Golson's classic Whisper Not, taken from a concert during that return engagement).
The album opens with the stark musings of The Orb, taken from Hersch's autobiographical music-theater piece My Coma Dreams. A love letter to Hersch's longtime partner, AIDS activist Scott Morgan, The Orb is the final dream depicted in the show, and in this solo rendition becomes a nakedly heartfelt outpouring of raw but tender emotion. The mood then takes a turn for the playful and swinging on Whisper Not, a longtime staple of Hersch's repertoire that here becomes a vibrant, virtuoso marathon of thematic exploration.
The piece also serves as an ideal mirror to the album's other composition from the pen of a jazz icon, Thelonious Monk's Eronel. Hersch has long been recognized as one of the premier interpreters of the Monk songbook, but despite including one of the iconic composer's pieces in every one of his sets for most of his career, Hersch had never tackled this particular tune, co-written by pianist Sadik Hakim. Monk's original stride-inflected lines come in for a dizzying array of variations in Hersch's endlessly imaginative take.
The music of Brazil has also been a constant in Hersch's career, in particular the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, the subject of one of the pianist's earlier solo efforts, 2009's Fred Hersch Plays Jobim. Picture in Black and White is a new addition to that repertoire, majestically transformed from a bossa nova feel to a crystalline hybrid with Chopin's last nocturne. On the other side of Through the Forest in the album's symmetrical structure comes Hersch's own classical-flavored Plainsong, a spare, lyrical piece composed in the bucolic setting of the MacDowell Colony, the inspirational artists' retreat in rural New Hampshire.
Open Book ends on a meaningful ellipsis, Billy Joel's moving And So It Goes. In title alone it's an apt conclusion, suggesting an embrace of life as lived and hinting at its open-ended continuation. The full lyrics, which Hersch has performed in duo settings with singers including frequent collaborator Kate McGarry, remain unspoken here but obviously deeply felt in every note. I connect with the sentiment of the words, Hersch says, and it felt like a good benediction to the whole album.1. The Orb

ADAD-KRE-4411xArrington De Dionyso's Malaikat Dan Singa
Open The CrownOpen the Crown conveys tendrils of raw energy emanating from the head - dream visions translated directly to audio outrage. Heavy. And sexy. To be expected from Arrington de Dionyso and his molten collection of Malaikat dan Singa who manipulate the "form'd and the formless" to create from within this broken system.
You may have experienced Arrington de Dionyso's Malaikat dan Singa as an unexpected live force, pushing up through the earth like daffodils in late winter; or maybe you're familiar with their previous exploits in the studio, Malaikat dan Singa and Suara Naga, which burn clean with fragrant traumas. Open the Crown is similarly passion-filled, with new vistas (channeled hallucinations) exploring English (previously only the Indonesian language was employed) as their stomping ground to expand parallel themes anew.
The players involved have all been Arrington cohorts in past lives with Malaikat dan Singa and other Dub Narcotic Studio exploits: Ben Kapp (drums), Angelo Spencer (guitar), Mark Morrison (keyboards) and Nehemiah St. Danger (electric bass guitar); tape echo over all. The joy of Open the Crown was captured by Dub Narcotic Studio engineers Ben Hargett (the mix) and Ephriam Nagler (the mastering). It's cosmically pleasing to both ear and dance floor.
Arrington de Dionyso (b. January 4,1975) makes trans-utopian world music for a world that may or may not exists. He traverses the nameless territories between surrealist automatism, shamanic seance, and the folk imagery of rock'n'roll using performance and visual art. He clarified his eccentric brew of ecstatic lunacy and prophetic madness during his 15 year tour-of-duty with Olympia's Old Time Relijun.
De Dionyso's Malaikat dan Singa is a trance-punk outfit featuring bass clarinet, guitars, multiple drummers and his trademark wild vocals (multi-spectral harmonic throat singing combined with grunts, yelps, and barks). "Malaikat dan Singa" translates as "Angels and Lions," and de Dionyso's lyrics (both Indonesian and any other language he chooses to ply) fiercely combine mythology and fantasy. As a band Malaikat dan Singa ultimately defies a clean translation gaining power by crossing boundaries - both linguistic and psychic.1. I Feel the Quickening

Includes a Limited Edition White Vinyl 7 Single Feat. Hasil Adkins, Bloodshot Bill And Ellen Allien
Record stores are popping up again everywhere. New vinyl pressing plants are opening in America, Europe and Asia. Young vinyl enthusiasts - both male and female! - are swarming to record fairs looking for old and new records to build their collection. When Passion for Vinyl Part 1 came out, there was still some doubt about the comeback of vinyl. Wasn't it all just a hype? Now, five years later, even the biggest sceptic can't deny it: vinyl is back and it's here to stay!
In light of all these new and exciting developments, a follow-up to the successful and well-received first volume of the Passion for Vinyl book (four stars in Record Collector magazine) is more than viable. DJs, musicians, engineers, designers, shop managers, record label CEOs and collectors like Dischord's Ian MacKaye, Norton's Miriam Linna, singer-songwriter Ryley Walker, musician and producer T Bone Burnett, Abbey Road's half-speed maestro Miles Showell, DJs Sven VÄth and Ellen Allien, designer John Kosh and many others tell about the records that changed their lives, their love for vinyl and the impact its resurgence has had on them. Passion for Vinyl Part 2 also shows how analogue recording techniques are making a comeback in the recording and mastering studios.
In the last few years, countless music lovers have (re)discovered that nothing beats listening to a vinyl record on a proper stereo set. It makes the listener connect with the music like nothing else.
This book is a tribute to that unique experience.
Passion for Vinyl Part. 2 is written by Dutch author, music journalist and vinyl fanatic Robert Haagsma. With an introduction by Michael Kurtz, co-founder of Record Store Day.

I'm Only DreamingTyler, TX-based indie pop outfit Eisley has announced I'm Only Dreaming, the band's fifth full-length, which was produced by Will Yip (Circa Survive, Balance & Composure, Lauryn Hill) and will be released via Equal Vision Records.
Vocalist/guitarist Sherri DuPree-Bemis opened up about "You Are Mine" revealing, "This song is about loving someone deeply and the beauty and challenges that come with being in a long-term, committed relationship. You're going to argue, you're going to rub each other wrong and disagree and drive each other absolutely crazy sometimes but at the end of the day you just want to be together. ('You're my everything, my sun and moon, you make me swoon; Wake me up, talk too much, piss me off, but you are mine')."
I'm Only Dreaming stays true to form of the band's signature dreamy sound, with DuPree-Bemis elaborating, "Musically, you could say it's classic Eisley, in the sense that it's melodic, moody pop and is written from the heart. Lyrically, it's very whimsical; it has a vibe that will take you into its own world and let you escape your normal life for a few minutes. I like to cloak things in a little mystery and romance; I think it's part of what makes all of Eisley's songs sound like they're from the same world. Man With The Golden Arm SoundtrackImport
Limited Edition Of 750 Copies On 180-Gram Gold Colored Vinyl
One of the finest jazz soundtracks to come out of the '50s, "The Man With The Golden Arm" is taken from the Otto Preminger film of the same name. Preminger was always very jazz influenced, and on this film he took his chances with Elmer Bernstein. The 1955 movie is about a former heroin addict, Frankie Machine (Frank Sinatra). For this movie, Elmer Bernstein composed perhaps the most brilliant jazz score. The drum, Frankie's own instrument, provides the rhythmic basis of the score. In the film's opening it's beat is alternately steady and agitated, just like Frankie's life; meanwhile, the brass screams and whirls out of control, mirroring Frankie's desperation as he runs off in search of one "last" fix1. Definition of spin doctor: a spokesperson employed to give a favorable interpretation of events to the media, especially on behalf of a political party.
Spin Doctors weren't part of a political party but spread the word about romance. The band was formed in New York City, best known for their early 1990s hits Two Princes and Little Miss Can't Be Wrong. The singles peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at No. 7 and No. 17 respectively.
Pocket Full of Kryptonite is the first studio album (and second release) by the Spin Doctors which was originally released in August 1991. It peaked at #1 and #3 on Billboard's Heatseekers and Billboard 200 albums charts. It was the band's bestselling album and was certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA.
The album's title is a reference to Kryptonite, a fictional substance from the Superman comic book series. The title is taken from the album's opening track, Jimmy Olsen's Blues, a reference to Superman supporting character Jimmy Olsen, who is attracted to Lois Lane and jealous of her romantic feelings for Superman. The cover is showing a phone booth and refers to Clark Kent frequently ducking into a nearby phone booth to change into his Superman attire.1. Jimmy Olsen's Blues

Much has been written about West Side Story, which began as a transmogrification of Romeo and Juliet as a feud between the Jews and Gentiles living on the East side in modern-day New York, only to morph into a confrontation between two street gangs, one American the other Puerto Rican, on the upper West side of the city. Initially, Leonard Bernstein, its composer, was to have written both music and lyrics, but Stephen Sondheim was eventually brought in to handle the latter. With Arthur Laurents contributing the book, and Jerome Robbins devising the staging, the show opened to great acclaim on September 26, 1957 at the Winter Garden, where it played 732 performances, and was subsequently revived several times on Broadway and around the country. But it was the film version, made three years later with Natalie Wood as Maria, that ensured its popularity worldwide. Though there are many recorded versions of the percussive score available, the original cast album, with its fresh, spontaneous performances, remains the standard by which all others are measured.LP 1

Towers was recorded by Steve Albini during the vernal equinox in 1996 at Robert Lang Studios, Seattle. Originally released as a demo tape in 1996 then released by Slap-A-Ham on vinyl in 1998. Southern Lord released a CD version (including Rift.Canyon.Dreams) in 1998. Remastered from the original 1/2 master tape (lost until this version) by Mell Dettmer.
Rift.Canyon.Dreams was recorded by Aaron Evil during the autumnal equinox in 1997 at Robert Lang Studios, Seattle. Originally released by Merciless Records on LP in 1998. Not only is this LP super rare, the covers were very flimsy so most existing copies have a lot of cover damage! Southern Lord released a CD version (including Towers) in 1998.
Bleeder b/w Rift.Canyon.Dreams. Bleeder was an unreleased track from the Towers Albini session. It originally came out on the split CD with Goatsnake on Hydra Head in 2000, now out of print. This song has never been released on vinyl (although test pressings for the Goatsnake split were made, finished vinyl was never produced). The Rift.Canyon.Dreams track was an unfinished outtake from the Rift.Canyon.Dreams session. It was mixed/completed by Dahlquist & Randall Dunn circa 2003 and then released on a split with ASVA (BW bassists Stuart Dahlquists then new project). The track was remixed by OMalley and Dunn in 2007 and released on the Crippled Lucifer 2CD reissue via SLR and is the version presented here.

ACSO-APO-0613xStevie Ray Vaughan
In The Beginning (200 Gram Vinyl)
Mastered From The Original Tapes By Ryan Smith At Sterling Sound
200-Gram Pressing By Quality Record Pressings
With his astonishingly accomplished guitar playing, Stevie Ray Vaughan ignited the blues revival of the '80s. Vaughan drew equally from bluesmen like Albert King, Otis Rush and Hubert Sumlin and rock 'n' roll players like Jimi Hendrix and Lonnie Mack, as well as the stray jazz guitarist like Kenny Burrell, developing a uniquely eclectic and fiery style that sounded like no other guitarist, regardless of genre.
Before the Montreaux Jazz Festival, before Bowie's Let's Dance album, before Texas Flood, before the Grammys, before the cocaine and alcohol abuse, before the redemption of sobriety, before the joyful In Step and Family Style ..... before August 27, 1990..... before the all-star tributes, before The Legendary Stevie Ray Vaughan......
There was an unknown, hardworking 24-year-old gunslinger named Little Stevie Vaughan, learning his craft the hard way in the trenches of the Austin Texas clubs, trying his darndest to get out of the shadow of his famous older brother Jimmie.
It wouldn't be long.
Anyone lucky enough to have been in the audience at this early live show, on April Fools Day in 1980, could have told you that. Young Stevie Vaughan (he had yet to become Stevie Ray) blasted the hometown crowd with a style that was already very well-formed. With Chris Layton on drums and bassist Jackie Newhouse (Tommy Shannon would join up a year later), his basic sound was already in place, albeit still in need of some polishing.
Taken from the surviving two-track master, Vaughan's guitar is raw and in your face every note of the way. His takes on Freddie King's In the Open and the lengthy Tin Pan Alley are the real highlights here.
As we did with our vaunted box set reissues, Texas Hurricane, again Analogue Productions is bringing you the finest-sounding Stevie Ray Vaughan collections ever preserved on 200-gram vinyl. Ryan Smith at Sterling Sound cut the lacquers for the LPs using the ultimate VMS 80 cutting lathe. Gary Salstrom handled the plating and the vinyl was pressed of course at Quality Record Pressings.
There's not a link in this chain that wasn't absolute first-rate. The absolute best that money can buy. We're passionate about the blues AND Stevie Ray and the passion shows up here in spades.

The sound is about as good as it gets, with almost no sense of recording gear between the listener and musicians, who are laid out in a solid horizontal line. The remarkable air and tangible 'thereness' will take your breath away. - Wayne Garcia, The Absolute Sound, August 2008
As spontaneous as music-making gets, this East meets West improv session between two masters of slide-based stringed instruments is like eating at the most exotic Indian restaurant that adds Tex-Mex flavors to its dishes. The sound is very natural, almost achingly beautiful. - Playback, June 2008
This record is a must-have for fans of Ry Cooder's explorations into global sounds. The playing is out of this world, and, on these cuts, it has less of a world music feel, and is almost bluesy at times. With the original sessions captured at 15 i.p.s. on all custom deParavicini gear, this is the ultimate stereo test record. The sound is as real, open and airy as it gets; not one more molecule of tone could possibly be put onto these black discs! - Jeff Dorgay, Tone Audio, No. 15, 2008
Passionate, mysterious, intricate, earthy, ethereal, moody and mystical, the rich musical improvisations on this recording defy categorization The recording is as astonishing as the music: a harmonically complex, three-dimensional, two-microphone purist production that will easily take its place at the top of the sonic heap in your record collection and that's a guarantee this is among the most spacious, convincing three-dimensional recordings you will ever hear An essential record in any 21st-century vinyl collection. Astonishingly, the four conversational yet adventurous tracks captured on A Meeting by the River were unrehearsed jams between the two masters, who had met only minutes before the session. The lesson is that Cooder and Bhatt not only knew how to play but how to listen. - Daniel Durchholz, Stereophile, February 2007
American composer, musicologist and guitar legend Ry Cooder teams with North Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt to create an exquisite musical realm, with both musicians playing exceptional slide guitar. Their collaboration evokes musical elements from many cultures and styles. Percussion by Sukhvindar Singh on tabla and Cooder's 14-year-old son Joachim on dumbek. This recording won a Grammy Award in 1994 for Best World Album.

Live On Fire (Awaiting Repress)Colored Triple Vinyl Set of This Amazing Live Show!
Despite having planned his career meticulously over the past 25 years or so, even in the camp of German hard rock master Axel Rudi Pell surprises cannot be ruled out: Before playing in front of a sold-out Cologne crowd on the second leg of his wildly successful Circle Of The Oath tour, the opportunity arose for taping the whole show, with cameras being all over. Well, Axel gave it a try. And that was a good move. Ten years after his last live album Knights Live (2002), you can - again - be a witness of a complete concert from the Bochum-based guitar virtuoso and his German-American all-star band. To round out the Axel Rudi Pell live package, the recording of the co-headlining gig at last year's Rock Of Ages festival was added to Live On Fire, the name of his newest live oeuvre.
Obviously, a live album doesn't have the same importance and significance as a new studio output, but it nevertheless is a perfect snapshot in time, because 2012 was the most successful year in Axel Rudi Pell's solo career by far. Circle Of The Oath, album No. 14, was released on March 23 and rode high on the charts all over Europe: in his homeland Germany, the critically acclaimed disc made it up to No. 16 in the first week, Switzerland welcomed good old Axel on No. 30, Austria on No. 55, Norway on No. 69 and in Sweden he went up to No. 51. And last but not least, he received another gold award for selling out three consecutive nights at the famous Zeche venue in his native Bochum. Apart from that, he rocked the summer crowds at the legendary Sweden Rock and Wacken Open Air festivals, as well as the open-air Rock Of Ages in Germany together with his band.
Even though Axel loves the composing part at home and the recording business in the studio, home is where the heart is and that's being on stage. Being musically socialized in the Golden Age of hard rock (the Seventies) he's probably a bigger fan of live albums than he would admit. As they say: applause is the performer's meat and drink. But without sometimes being anarchistic spontaneously and playing with the audience's emotions, without the sweat coming off the ceiling and the priceless energy being trapped in the middle of an adventure that is called live concert, when the lights go down and every amp is on fire - the life of a true rocker would be incomplete. Speaking of which: besides his success, Axel Rudi Pell has always been that down-to-earth guy and mainly the fan he was turned into when he first heard DEEP PURPLE's Fireball back in the day. With Live On Fire, he accomplishes a long-desired wish and gives his fans what they desperately want for quite some time.
No surprise at all that the main focus is set on the newbies: here's the striking chords of fast and furious opener Ghost In The Black, the hard rocking pounding of Before I Die and without a doubt one of Axel's best songs written in a decade: the brilliant Circle Of The Oath, which would make Jimmy Page cry out loud. But there's more to listen to on Live On Fire: the passion for medleys (The Masquerade Ball/Casbah/Dreaming Dead) combined with some all-time classics here and there (ZEPPELIN's Whole Lotta Love or PURPLE's Mistreated).1. Fear In A Handful Of DustELITIST are emerging on top of a new scene growing rapidly in the United States of America. Hailing from Portland, Oregon the quartet has its roots in the Hardcore scene. Yet under the influence of early Death Metal in the vein of MORBID ANGEL and a strong dose of Black Metal their sound shifts to something as fresh as radical. The crusty spirit of Sludgecore transparent in chaotic structures and moments of uncontrol is vomited upon the world with screams of anger and disgust by vocalist Joshua Josh Greene. This is met by the burning hatred of blazing guitars carrying the force of Death and darkness of Black Metal. Loud and passionate ELITIST force the world to listen first with their self titled EP Elitist in the year 2009, which was followed by a split 7 with TRANSIENT (2011). Having shared stages with GAZA, TRAP THEM, TRANSIENT and others the Americans are now ready to unleash the fury of their debut album Fear in a Handful of Dust with the help of Season of Mist.
In ELITIST's own words: This is for those of us who observe and recognize the evidence of evil in faith, hypocrisy of government and the poisons of herd mentality. We'll scream our message of discontent from bloody throats and open wounds. Get ready for a violent punishment and a lesson in destruction. Get ready for ELITIST!1. Burning the Unspoken Gospel

ADAD-KRE-5418xThe Pine Hill Haints
The Magik Sounds of The Pine Hill HaintsThe Magik Sounds of the Pine Hill Haints ventures
softly into the cool, dark whisper of the haunted south. Short,
tight spun rhymes about silver quarters and vampires come
from a late evening session in a small pink house in south
Alabama, located next to an old Native American mound of
shells and bones, recorded at low volume with red eyes and
open windows. This is the 4th Halloween dance party long
player the Haints have cut for K.
Mrs Pac-Man sets the theme...although this record is
quicker and faster, Buddy Holly pop driven than most other
Haint efforts, the opening track places your mind in the
smokey state needed to feel the Magik Sound vibe. The sad
Queen of all truck stops and late night greasy spoons, the
lovely Angel Mrs Pac-man hold her charm over the listener
and keeps every loner in tune with midnight feeling.
I used to work a lot of third shift jobs, serving crummy food to
sweethearts, the day finished, done, another one in the
books, and the great burden of living in a modern nightmare
almost, almost felt like it had been lifted...the sweet early
a.m. twilight hours, where all humans are brothers again, all
hatreds and vices and ill wills are temporarily forgiven, folks
smile and tell a little joke or two, and the haunted Mrs Pac-man winks eternal in the background...1. Ms. Pac-Man

SSDD-STRATxMatt Sorum's Fierce Joy
Autographed By Matt Sorum
First Time on Vinyl!
Limited to 1000
Pressed On Colored Vinyl
After a lifetime fueling some of the most volatile bands in hard rock history, Matt Sorum is stepping out from behind the drums with a candid and versatile solo project. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, who has manned the kit for Guns N' Roses, Velvet Revolver and the Cult, is unveiling sophomore solo album Stratosphere under the moniker Matt Sorum's Fierce Joy, and the name couldn't be more appropriate. Coined by none other than close friend and Motörhead legend Lemmy Kilmister, fierce joy is an intentional oxymoron, representing not only Sorum's newfound contentment, but his insatiable fire to build positive things on and off the stage.
That contentment is palpable on Stratosphere opener The Sea, a lush tale of spiritual awakening in which Sorum-who wrote the entire record and played acoustic guitar and piano-sings, and the music here is so good / I'd live with orcas if I could / they all sing like Billie Holiday / to make all the bad things go away. But the record's often relaxed Americana vibe belies Sorum's intense passion for animal and human rights. He's the driving force behind nonprofit Adopt the Arts, which is responsible for generous musical instrument donations and keeping the arts vital in school curriculums worldwide.

The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York's secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.

A Permeable LifeSinger-songwriter Carrie Newcomer is releasing her twelfth
studio recording this spring, A Permeable Life, produced and
engineered by Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Over the
Rhine, Willy Nelson, Lily & Madeleine). Newcomer is simultaneously
releasing a companion book, A Permeable Life: Poems and
Essays. Newcomer has attracted a devoted following with
her warm voice, exquisite melodies, and an irreverent yet
spiritual view of the world. As in the work of poets Mary
Oliver and Wendell Berry, Newcomer's songs are based in
the ordinary, and infused with images from the natural world.
"A Permeable Life is about what presses out from the heart,
what comes in at a slant and what shimmers below the
surface of things," Newcomer says. "To live permeably is to
be open-hearted and audacious, to risk showing up as our
truest self, and embracing a willingness to be astonished."
On this album, Newcomer's signature deep voice-which the Austin American-Statesman called "as rich
as Godiva chocolate"-takes on a quiet conversational tone, close and intimate. Open and elegant arrangements
showcase lyrics that balance introspection and interior monologue with love and fascination for the shared
human story. The concept of this album was creating a musical framework as intimate and elegant as the songs
themselves. Each individual part have clarity and beauty, tting perfectly together like the gears of a ne clock,
and yet uid and never ridged or contained but remaining open and seemingly effortless. Newcomer states, "We
wanted this album to be very intimate. We wanted the listener to feel very close as if in conversation with me.
The vocals on this album were sung as if I were sitting at the kitchen table with the listener."
In "Every Little Bit of It," Newcomer delights in the small experiences that give our life meaning, and the
importance of embracing these moments while we can "drain the glass drink it down, every moment of this,
every little bit of it." In "A Light in the Window," she reects on the feeling of seeing a light in the window at a
distance. We don't know what the next threshold will bring, and yet there is always a whisper, a light in the
distance giving us hope and encouragement. In "Writing You a Letter," Newcomer describes the process of
traveling with an open heart, and how it will inevitably change us: "Every place I go leaves it's own tattoo." But
she also knows that we make impressions when we leave: "That's how it is laying stone on stone, building little
altars by the side of the road." "The Ten O'clock Line" and "Abide" (co-written with author Parker J. Palmer),
explore themes of loss and new thresholds, musing on the possibility that what may look like a hole in one's
life, may be only a space. In "Visitation," Newcomer describes the experience of how memories do not arrive in
a linear fashion, but wash over us throughout the day. In the haunting "Thank You Good Night" she describes
the evolution of a prayer of gratitude. "A Room at the Table" is an anthem for a new diverse world where she
writes "This is how it all begins, let us sing the new world in," calling us to allow this troubled world to
transform us and move us to action. In "An Empty Chair" she explores one woman's story in the wake of
unexpected gun violence. And "Forever Ray" and "Don't Put Me On Hold" reect Newcomer's mischievous

1 Hopeful RdOver the past few years, Vintage Trouble have wowed audiences across the globe by opening for The Rolling Stones in London's Hyde Park, touring with legends like The Who and AC/DC, and playing sold-out headline shows worldwide. Now, on their first album for Blue Note Records, the Los Angeles-based foursome - singer Ty Taylor, guitarist Nalle Colt, bassist Rick Barrio Dill, and drummer Richard Danielson channel the vitality and passion of their live show into a fresh and urgent take on guitar-powered rhythm & blues. Produced by Blue Note president and three-time Grammy Award-winner Don Was, 1 Hopeful Rd. finds Vintage Trouble building off the groove-fueled sound that Yahoo! once painted as ''James Brown singing lead for Led Zeppelin'' and blending blues, soul, and riff-heavy rock & roll with joyfully gritty abandon. As heard on lead single ''Run Like the River,'' 1 Hopeful Rd. matches Vintage Trouble's emotional intensity with a raw yet sophisticated musicianship that's prompted the New York Times to name the band modern-day answer to Otis Redding and BBC Radio 6 to anoint them ''the heirs of rhythm and blues.''1. Middle BrotherMiddle Brother (Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, John McCauley of Deer Tick and Matthew Vasquez of Delta Spirit) played their first show at 2010's SXSW, a tiny late-night unannounced event under the moniker MG&V. Other than recording the album and rehearsing once, they had never played the songs live. The audience (and the mob of onlookers crammed in the doorways and windows) were treated to an impossible-to-forget set by a band of musical comrades who seemed genuinely surprised by the fire that was ignited on stage. It was a rollicking and boisterous show that could have fallen apart at any moment and instead centrifuged into melodic and harmonic brilliance. What held it together was each member's sense of song and performance, a perfect, intuitive balance of craft and feel, equal parts playful and earnest.
In a time when synthesizers and laptops are taking over stages, Goldsmith, McCauley and Vasquez are leading the pack of young rock songwriters who strive to carry on the tradition of figures such as Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Warren Zevon and Tom Petty. Middle Brother came together in mid-2009 when the three song-smiths realized, after several on-stage collaborations, that they shared a unique vision and wanted to take it one step further, into the studio. Their songs are anthemic, soulful, passionate and confessional.
The 12 tracks on Middle Brother are the result of their off-the-cuff yet diligent workshop experience. The songs are world-class, the performances raw and immediate as each member pushed the other to bring the best of what they do to the proceedings. The record captures a potent moment in time for these three burgeoning songwriting stars who are just beginning to feel the real power in their respective talents. The members of Middle Brother are confident, but not resolute and stuck. They are willing to explore and are open to each others ideas as they work towards the common ideal of the redemptive power of the song.1. Daydreaming
