    Groovy: The Red Garland Trio

Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles' group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove.

    Greatest Hits

Greatest Hits is a compilation album by American recording group Sly and the Family Stone. It was originally released on November 21, 1970, by Epic Records. Comprising five singles and their b-sides along with one additional single and one album track, it includes all of the singles from the albums Dance to the Music (1968), Life (1968), and Stand! Mixes sometimes have different timings and differences in vocals and or instrumentation.

Three tracks released as singles in 1969 appear on album for the first time here: Hot Fun in the Summertime, Everybody Is a Star, and Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).

Greatest Hits was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), having shipped five million copies in the United States.

    Tale Spinnin' (Speakers Corner)

We played music that people listened to every day just as they watch the news every evening, music which changed constantly - just like the weather, reminisced Joe Zawinul when talking about coming up with a name for the group. This would probably frighten off listeners in today's mass market. But back in those days CBS was satisfied with the group's sound being somewhat similar to the Miles Davis Combo and offered them a recording contract without carrying out the usual sound check. The magic potion Bitches Brew, which Zawinul and Wayne Shorter had conjured up with Miles Davis, was promising of exhilarating new things to come.

The heart-stopping mix of motivic fixed points and exciting improvisations, »the sketchy melodies, all that a synthesizer and other similar electronic devices could offer, combined with a Milky Way of rhythms« (Der Spiegel) was the pathway down which the group went - without ever becoming pure routine. The fifth album, Tale Spinnin', is captivating for its wealth of distinctive, often warm, synthesized sounds, which are further enhanced by Wayne Shorter's bright, twangy soprano saxophone, lending it a jazzy aura. To be sure, this gripping jazz fusion never progresses steadily all the time, but takes up snatchy, though seemingly familiar, melodic ingredients and combines them to produce a new mixture. Badia, however, is completely different: a quietly flowing and totally rhythmic ethnic work, which today would be classified as World Music.

    Musicians:

    • Joe Zawinul (keyboards, percussion, vocals)

    • Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone)

    • Alphonso Johnson (bass)

    • Alyrio Lima (percussion)

    • Leon Ndugu Chandler (drums)

Recording: 1975 in den Wally Heider Recording Studios, San Francisco, von Bruce Botnick

Production: Josef Zawinul und Wayne Shorter

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

"One of the most impressive debuts of all time by a jazz group." - AllMusic.com

Here we have the free-floating, abstract beginnings of
Weather Report, which would define the state of the
electronic jazz/rock art from its first note almost to its
last. Their first album is a direct extension of the Miles
Davis In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew period, more fluid
in sound and more volatile in interplay. All Music calls
it one of the most impressive debuts of all time by a
jazz group. Weather Report is getting new life with
this incredible pressing. Mastered from original tapes
at 45rpm, and pressed on two 180 gram audiophile-grade vinyl. This is the essential edition of this album.

The Monks - a strange, rare group with a story that sounds like a drunk friend's generous
hyperbole. A group of American G.I.s stationed in Germany on the precipice of Western
cultural revolution starts playing music loosely connected to the rock n' roll craze,
contrastingly incorporating a critical and often offensive avant-garde edge. Nothing
was off limits - screeching vocals, dark aesthetics, staccato-strummed banjo, sardonic
lyricism, critiques of the Vietnam War and full monk costuming down to the tonsure.
When viewed on the whole, it seems like an art school student's senior thesis on what
the craze means and its future possibilities. Due in large part to original Polydor vinyl
collectability and years in the word-of-mouth hype machine, their legend and cult status
has steadily blossomed since their last shows in 1967.

Fast forward to 2017, the crew at Third Man, already huge fans, are presented with an
honest-to-God treasure trove of original Monks photos, newspaper clippings, business
cards, letterhead, contracts, postcards and, yes, analog tapes, containing trailblazing,
wild compositions completely unheard by public ears.

"I'm Watching You" would have been recorded on February 28th, 1967 at the same
sessions that would produce the Monks' final single "Love Can Tame the Wild" b/w "He
Went Down to the Sea." The remaining four songs were recorded after hours in the Top
Ten Club later that year, just prior to the break-up of the band.

These songs have been unreleased for 50 years and are quite possibly the last music left
to be heard by this legendary band.

    Lost Recordings And Beat Rarities

    7 Vinyl Box Set w/ 20 Lost Tracks & Hard-To-Find Gems!

This highly resonant set acts as a guidebook to many of the missing links behind the one British beat group who, more than any other, stayed neck-and-neck with the Beatles throughout the 60s. In terms of quality single releases with irresistible chart appeal (15 Top Ten 45s in the U.K.) and pure musical evolution, there is no doubt the Hollies breathed the same rarefied air as the Fab Four.

The Hollies Lost Recordings and Beat Rarities collects 20 long-buried tracks and hard-to-find gems, ranging from rare U.S. and British singles to EP rarities and unissued songs, all perfectly ripe for release as an original Hollies 45, whether that happened or not. Follow the group from their first single (released in May of 1963), the savage Aint That Just Like Me b/w Hey Whats Wrong With Me, through their discotheque dance floor raves: Come On Back, What Kind of Love and She Said Yeah. Swoon to their swingin ballad Yes I Will, groove with their jazzy Honey and Wine and float to outer space with All The World is Love. Discover an impossible-to-find, spy-style double-sider the Hollies did for a 1967 Italian movie, and groove to unreleased tracks cut while on tour in New York City in 1965, then marvel at an extremely scarce cover of the Beatles If I Needed Someone, tracked at Abbey Road, revered recording home to both groups.

Sundazed has collected a pirates ransom of tracks here, nearly all unavailable on any original English or American Hollies album. Delivered now via the supremely cool format of 45RPM vinyl, each single is loaded with guaranteed disk jockey dance-floor magic that only further cements the Hollies reputation as the coolest Manchester band, ever!

The Hottest New Group In Jazz (Pure Pleasure)

The premier jazz vocal act of all time, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross revolutionized vocal music during the late '50s and early '60s by turning away from the increasingly crossover slant of the pop world to embrace the sheer musicianship inherent in vocal jazz. Applying the concepts of bop harmonies to swinging vocal music, the trio transformed dozens of instrumental jazz classics into their own songs, taking scat solos and trading off licks and riffs in precisely the same fashion as their favorite improvising musicians. Vocal arranger Dave Lambert wrote dense clusters of vocal lines for each voice that, while only distantly related, came together splendidly. Jon Hendricks wrote clever, witty lyrics to jazz standards like Summertime, Moanin', and Twisted, and Annie Ross proved to be one of the strongest, most dexterous female voices in the history of jazz vocals. Together Lambert, Hendricks & Ross paved the way for vocal groups like Manhattan Transfer while earning respect from vocalists and jazz musicians alike.

    • Dave Lambert (vocals)

    • Joe Hendricks (vocals)

    • Annie Ross (vocals)

    • Harry Edison (trumpet)

    • Gildo Mahones (piano)

    • Ike Isaacs (bass)

The Original Sound Of New Orleans Soul 1960-76

For more than ten years Soul Jazz Records have been exploring and documenting the sound of New Orleans Funk. Now they turn their attention to the flipside of this musical coin - New Orleans Soul. The main force behind New Orleans Soul is Allen Toussaint, a virtual one-man hit-making machine in the 1960s, writing, arranging and producing hit after hit for an unending list of unbelievably talented local singers such as Eldridge Holmes, Maurice Williams, Betty Harris, Ernie K Doe and Diamond Joe all of whom are featured. New Orleans is also a city of great musical families. Vocalist Aaron Neville was the brother of Art Neville (who formed The Meters) and later in the 1970s joined with brother Cyril to form The Neville Brothers. Soul vocalist supreme Willie Tee is also known as Wilson Turbinton, who alongside brother Earl, formed the super-heavy funk band The Gaturs and backed the Mardi Gras Indian group The Wild Magnolias. Also included here are rare, lost and killer soulful tracks from New Orleans artists Eddie Bo (and protÉgÉe vocalist Inell Young), Jean Knight, Jimmy Hicks, Francine King and more!

A New World Record (Awaiting Repress)

Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of the Blue, as the high points in the band's history. One might be better off opting for A New World Record over its successor, however, as a more modest-sized creation chock full of superb songs that are produced even better. Opening with the opulently orchestrated Tightrope, which heralds the perfect production found throughout this album, A New World Record contains seven of the best songs ever to come out of the group. The Beatles influence is present, to be sure, but developed to a very high degree of sophistication and on Lynne's own terms, rather than being imitative of specific songs.

Telephone Line might be the best Lennon-McCartney collaboration that never was, lyrical and soaring in a way that manages to echo elements of Revolver and the Beatles without ever mimicking them. The original LP's second side opened with So Fine, which seems like the perfect pop synthesis of guitar, percussion, and orchestral sounds, embodying precisely what Lynne had first set out to do with Roy Wood at the moment ELO was conceived. From there, the album soars through stomping rock numbers like Livin' Thing and Do Ya, interspersed with lyrical pieces like Above the Clouds (which makes striking use of pizzicato bass strings).

An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 - 1979)

An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 - 1979) compiles
unreleased recordings from the archives of multiversal artist Ariel Kalma.
Concerned as much with musicality as spiritual facility, Kalma's work
vibrates aside fellow travelers along the great rainbow in curved air of
    the 1970s avant-garde.

Ariel Kalma's boundary-blurring electronic music is heard here in
radiant detail across a selection of work spanning his early free-jazz
and spoken word trips to his infinite modular synthesizer and primitive
drum machine meditations. Kalma's story is one of world travel, musical
discovery and ego-abandonment. Yet for an artist who often discarded
public recognition in favor of the ascetic truths in music making, An
Evolutionary Music offers the imprint of an outright auteur.

Born in France, but rarely in one place for long, Ariel Kalma's 1970s
migrations took flight through the decade's furthest spaces of musical
and spiritual invention. As a hired horn for well-known French groups,
the young musician toured as far as India, a place where Kalma would
learn circular breathing techniques enabling him to sustain notes without
pause against tape-looping harmonies configured through his homemade
    effects units.

Those effects evolved from Kalma's loyalty to a beloved dual ReVox
set-up- two tape machines "chained" together to form a primitive delay
unit. Over looped saxophone melodies, Kalma would mix in all shades of
polyphonic color, synthesizing fragments of poetry with ambient space or
setting modal flute melodies to rippling drum machine patterns and starlit
    field recordings.

In France during the mid-1970s, Kalma was staffed as a technician at
Pierre Henry's legendary Institut National Audiovisuel, Groupe de Recherches
Musicales (INA GRM) studios - the same music concrÉte laboratory that
spawned masterpieces by members Luc Ferrari, Iannis Xenakis, and Bernard
Parmegiani. Like his predecessors and colleagues at INA GRM, Kalma's
relationship to sound was both formal and non-hierarchical. To Kalma, all
music existed as related universal patterns, in perfect harmony with the
people, places and environments it was created.

Kalma's recorded output of the 1970s culminated in the now scarcely-available Les Temps des Moissons (trans. The Time of Harvest) in 1975,
and a masterpiece of birdsong exploration with Osmose in 1978. Osmose
is double album featuring sculptor Richard Tinti, who had supplied Kalma
with hours of field recordings from the rainforests of Borneo.

An Evolutionary Music harvests uncatalogued music made between
Kalma's private press records and onward through the many small-batch
cassette releases Kalma would tender. With this collection of musical
hybridity and distinct genre-corrosion, Ariel Kalma's righteous bucking of
both popular music trends and the academic tenets of the avant-garde
falls squarely in the spirit of other renegades of sacred new-music such as
Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Charlemagne Palestine.

We're Gonna Change The World - The 60's Chicago Garage Sound Of Quill Records

Chicago was a great place to be if you were a member of a rock & roll combo in the mid-'60s -- there were plenty of teen clubs, radio stations were happy to play local product, and several Windy City labels were ready and willing to take hometown acts into the studio and get their music into stores. Dunwich Records and USA Records were the biggest labels in Chicago and both scored a handful of national hits, but they were far from the only game in town, and Peter Wright, a successful record promo man who went on to manage the New Colony Six, ran one of the city's most interesting small labels, Quill Records, which released top-notch sides on a number of fine groups and licensed a few of his masters to larger labels out of town.

While Quill only lasted a bit less than two years (from 1966 to 1967), their output was impressive stuff from an eclectic variety of acts, and the great reissue label Sundazed, only a few months after releasing a definitive two-disc overview of the USA Records catalog (2131 South Michigan Avenue: 60's Garage and Psychedelia from U.S.A. and Destination Records), have unearthed 19 highlights from Quill's archives on We're Gonna Change the World! The 60's Chicago Garage Sound of Quill Productions.

Many of Quill's acts followed the trends of the major British acts of the day, but hardly all of them; the Exterminators deliver a screed against long hair and take an America first position on rock with the over the top Declaration of Independence '65, Hot Pastrami by the Don Caron Orchestra is a high-powered instrumental dominated by honking saxophones and fuzzy guitars, and I'm Going to Change the World by the Commons Ltd. suggests the psychedelic revolution that was lurking around the corner while still maintaining a high degree of sneer and swagger.

And even the acts that were looking to the U.K. for inspiration were turning their eyes to unusual places; the Delights were clearly obsessed with the Zombies, so much so that their original tune Every Minute, Every Hour, Every Moment mimics their style just as well as their cover of Just Out of Reach, and the Skunks, who true to their name bleached stripes into their hair, also leaned to the moody side of British pop with Don't Ask Why and a fine cover of the Beatles' It's Only Love (though Do the Duck is a raw and fuzzy celebration of some would-be dance craze).

Phantom Thread (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

Jonny Greenwood's score to Paul Thomas Anderson's new feature film, Phantom Thread, is releasing via Nonesuch Records.

Phantom Thread is set in the glamour of 1950s post-war London, where renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants, and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock's life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.

With Phantom Thread, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey and the women who keep his world running. Phantom Thread is Anderson's eighth movie, and his second collaboration with Daniel Day-Lewis. The film's soundtrack includes eighteen compositions by Greenwood. It was recorded in London with a sixty-member string orchestra conducted by Robert Ziegler and is featured more prominently in the film than any of Greenwood's scores have been before. The Phantom Thread score was nominated for Golden Globe and BAFTA awards and has received the Best Score prizes from film critics' associations in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, Seattle, and St. Louis.

The composer spoke to Variety about the process of creating a score that reflected the film's romance and glamour: We talked a lot about '50s music, what was popularly heard then as well as what was being written and recorded. Nelson Riddle and Glenn Gould's Bach recordings were the main references. I was interested in the kind of jazz records that toyed with incorporating big string sections; Ben Webster made some good ones. Greenwood continues, The smaller groups, and solo players, work like close-ups [and] not necessarily to accompany [a] visual, but rather, to focus your attention on and make you feel directly engaged with the characters. The bigger orchestral things often worked best for drawing you back to see the bigger situation.

Anderson and Greenwood's previous collaborations include the soundtrack for Academy Award-winning There Will Be Blood (2007), The Master (2012), and Inherent Vice (2014), all released by Nonesuch. Indiewire says of their collaboration: Paul Thomas Anderson fans are well accustomed to how instrumental Jonny Greenwood's music is to the auteur's body of work. Whether it's the foreboding strings in There Will Be Blood or the discordant percussion in The Master, Greenwood's original scores expertly capture Anderson's tones. This fact is especially true in Phantom Thread, which marks the fourth collaboration between Anderson and Greenwood.

Widely known as the guitarist for Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood is also a highly respected composer. In addition to the Anderson film soundtracks, Nonesuch also released his score for Norwegian Wood, his collaboration with Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki, and his performance of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint. Most recently, the label released Junun-a collaboration between Greenwood, composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, and a group of Indian musicians called the Rajasthan Express that was recorded in the fifteenth-century Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India. Paul Thomas Anderson came along to document the sessions. The resulting impressionistic film, also entitled Junun, debuted at the New York Film Festival, before screening at several other international festivals.

    Getz Au Go-Go

Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Analog Master Tapes! Only 2500 Numbered Limited Edition Copies Worldwide!

It was one of those rare nights of absolute communication - the New York City opening of the New Stan Getz Quartet.

Stan had chosen the Cafe Au Go Go for this occasion because of its fine acoustics and its intimacy. Atmosphere was paramount to the first New York presentation of the New Stan Getz Quartet and Astrud Gilberto because of the soft, easy quality of their music. Astrud had already won acclaim for her work with Getz in the album Getz/Gilberto (V/V 6-8548), which also stars Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto as well, and this threesome's single from the album The Girl From Ipanema was rapidly rising on the best-selling charts.

This, is the stunning New Stan Getz Quartet with Astrud Gilberto at Cafe Au Go Go. Reflected here are the excitement, warmth and communication of that memorable engagement." -Gene Lees, from the liner notes of Getz Au Go Go

Although the name Stan Getz (tenor sax) was initially synonymous with the West Coast cool scene during the mid-to-late 1950s, he likewise became a key component in the Bossa Nova craze of the early 1960s... Getz Au Go Go featuring Astrud Gilberto (1964) was the second-to-last album that he would issue during his self-proclaimed Bossa Nova Era- the final being Getz/Gilberto #2 [live] (1964) concert title from Carnegie Hall. ... the focus of Getz Au Go Go steers away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Astrud Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style. That said, there are a few Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions - Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars); and One Note Samba - both of which would be considered as jazz standards in years to follow - as well as the lesser-circulated Eu E Voco.- All Music Guide

Eric Clapton: Life In 12 Bars (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Pre-Order)

    Release Date: July 20, 2018*

Universal is set to release the complementary OST to the new Eric Clapton documentary, Life In 12 Bars. From Showtime Documentary Films and directed by Oscar-winner, Lili Fini Zanuck, the film takes an unflinching and deeply personal look into the life of the legendary 18-time Grammy Award-winning guitarist and multi-million selling recording artist.

The OST, available as a 4-LP, comprises 32 tracks spanning Clapton's long and illustrious career. It includes tracks by The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos, The Beatles, Aretha Franklin, Muddy Waters and Clapton's solo work.

Of the 32 featured there are five previously unreleased tracks:

From the Cream era there is a version of Spoonful, an incredible 17-minute tour-de-force, recorded live at the LA Forum in October 1968 during the group's final US, Goodbye tour. There are two from Derek and The Dominos - firstly a recording of High, originally recorded during the 1971 sessions at Olympic Studios for their unreleased 2nd album. This track was later revisited and re-recorded for Eric Clapton's 1975 album, There's One In Every Crowd. Secondly, the track Little Wing, a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, recorded live during the Domino's late set at The Fillmore East on October 24th, 1970. Finally, there are two previously unreleased Eric Clapton tracks from 1974; the first ever release of the entire full-length recording of the international hit version of Bob Marley's I Shot The Sheriff, recorded during the sessions for 461 Ocean Boulevard and a live performance of Little Queenie, the Chuck Berry rock 'n' roll classic, recorded at Long Beach Arena, California in July 1974 during Clapton's comeback tour to promote 461 Ocean Boulevard.

In addition, there are two alternative mixes made for Eric Clapton's 1970 debut album. Separate mixes were made for the album, by Delaney Bramlett and Tom Dowd (in LA) and also by Clapton himself (in London). Featured in this collection are Clapton's rare mixes of album highlights, After Midnight and Let It Rain.
