    The Rega RP10 skeletal turntable.

Rega is extremely pleased to announce the launch of the much awaited RP10.

Rega's design philosophy extends further than ever before with advanced components built around our radical new plinth design. Featuring the brand new RB2000 tonearm, a ceramic flywheel effect platter and the custom RP10 power supply (allowing total control and accuracy over both motor vibration and speed performance) guarantee the highest level of performance from a Rega turntable to date.

The RP10 will also be available with its perfect partner, the Apheta moving coil cartridge, factory fitted as a package option.

    The Evolution of Revolution

Evolution is a well proven and documented process in many areas of our lives. This applies in particular to design engineers and machines. Over the past forty years our cars have become more reliable and economical whilst we take for granted the reliability and speed of modern aircraft. Rega is no exception to evolution. Rega's experience and previous achievements allow us to continually develop and produce better products.

The RP10 represents probably the biggest step forward in the evolution of Roy Gandy's turntable design philosophies. Low mass, high rigidity plinths combined with electronically controlled low vibration motors, high flywheel effect platters and lower mass higher stability tonearms.

    RP10 Custom power supply

Housed in Rega's custom design case is a brand new advanced anti vibration and speed control circuit dedicated to running the 24v low noise motor. The speed and control of the motor is achieved by using a new DSP (digital signal processing) generator built upon a high stability crystal. The device will divide the accurate square wave from the crystal to the exact frequency required to turn the platter at the selected speed. The DSP core will also generate a near perfect sinusoidal waveform to power the motor. Factory set vibration and speed adjustments are then made to the power supply to tune the motor for optimal performance.

The entire tonearm structure is designed to have the minimum of mechanical joints whilst using the stiffest materials in all critical areas. The tolerance of the RB2000 tonearm is so tight that no adhesive is used at any point throughout the construction. A brand new low mass, precision engineered, vertical bearing assembly has been manufactured to further compliment the inherent design philosophy of the RP10 turntable.

The RB2000 uses the latest award winning Rega arm tube. Each one which is meticulously hand polished (keeping mass to an absolute minimum) and has been completely redesigned to redistribute mass and further reduce stresses and resonances. This advanced design tube increases the stiffness and rigidity of the overall assembly whilst reducing stress on the bearings even further.

Magnesium and Phenolic - Dual bracing

A super lightweight plinth combined with a double brace mounted specifically where the increased rigidity is required (between the tonearm mounting and the main hub bearing) forms a structurally sound "stressed beam" assembly. This design prevents energy absorption and unwanted resonances which will add un-natural distortions to the music. The RP10 takes our double brace technology to the next level. Not content with an unprecedented stiffness to mass ratio, Rega have obsessively reduced any resonant properties by using two different materials for the new stressed beam. The top layer is magnesium and the bottom layer is pheno-lic (two of the lightest and stiffest materials available). Incorporating two different materials into the brace structure lowers their ability to pick up unwanted airborne vibrations. Simply put, different materials have different natural resonances. By using two different materials together they decrease the natural frequency of each other by self damping.

    Super flywheel effect ceramic platter

The RP10 uses a custom ceramic flywheel effect platter. The platter is produced from ceramic oxide powder which is compressed, fired and diamond cut to ensure perfect accuracy and flatness across the surface. The new platter features a modified construction over the previous P9 version with improved coupling to the sub platter.

    24V Low noise motor

The motor is a high specification, 24V twin phase synchronous unit. It is controlled by Rega's unique and innovative RP10-PSU power supply. The motor drives the CNC machined pulley, sub platter and hub-bearing assembly via the twin belt drive. Each motor is individually hand tuned to its own custom power supply in the factory to minimise vibration, motor noise and ensure optimum performance.

Skeletal plinth design with polyolefin foam core

Controversially Rega has always researched methods of producing light but stiff and rigid plinths. The technology is simple: unwanted noise at microscopic levels is developed by the turntable motor and main bearing. The plinth can also pick up airborne vibration from the music. From the beginning in the 1970's Rega pioneered the use of a stressed skin structure for the plinth. This uses two layers of phenolic resin with a lightweight particle or fibre board sandwiched between the skins. This technique has been used in many applications where stiff, light structures are needed such as an aircraft wing or a Formula 1 chassis.

The current increase in interest in turntables has allowed Rega to research and develop higher technology structures for the customer who is happy pay a little more for higher sound quality. The all new RP10 turntable utilises a unique new stressed skin structure produced from thin phenolic skins sandwiching a featherweight nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core. This material has been developed exclusively for Rega over a three year period. The RP10 plinth is 7 times lighter than the weight of the original Planar 3 plinth. Rega has added even more stiffness in the crucial area between the arm and the main bearing.

De-coupled outer frame and dust cover

A common problem for many skeletal design turntables is the inability to incorporate an effective dust cover into the design. We have constructed an outer frame that minimises contact between the inner and outer plinth. The only points of contact are three location devices on the feet which centralises the inner and outer plinths perfectly. This makes set-up extremely easy and allows the use of a dust cover. The RP10 can be used without the outer frame if so desired.

    Turntable design & mythology

Today there are many approaches to Hi-Fi design which follow established and informed engineering or electronic principles. Amplifier and loudspeaker design has been well documented over the years with excellent technical publications. These subjects have been based on tried and tested acoustic criteria and many computer software programs now exist that enable a near amateur to design a passable working loudspeaker based on known acoustic and mathematical parameters.

Enter turntable design: When it comes to turntable design we are limited to a few poorly informed articles describing only very limited aspects of design. This is a subject full of mythology. Designers propose theories that counter the basic laws of physics, use terminology that doesn't actually exist in the engineering world, build products that are more like beautiful sculptures than acoustic reproduction machines and sell items costing tens of thousands of pounds that hardly function as intended and often fail to work at all.

For instance a very common myth is "the heavier the better" concept. Turntable bases weighing tens of kilograms are not uncommon. The reality is that the base actually needs to be as light as possible to prevent unwanted bearing and motor noise being transferred to the turntable or record. Platters also fall under a similar myth with many platter designs becoming so heavy that it is impossible to design a correctly functioning bearing (and some so light that anyone can hear the speed inconsistency). The turntable platter itself needs to be of enough weight to spin at a constant speed within the confines of the chosen bearing and motor drive system.

Many amateur designers in any field choose one component in a design and try to achieve an extreme in size, weight and quality. They believe that by taking one theory to its extreme the design will become "perfect". The reality of all engineering, design (and life) is that perfection is not possible. Based on this reality, Rega's goal has always been to optimise a mixture of numerous "correct compromises" thus bringing the designer nearer to the unachievable goal of perfection.

The P5 is the second largest of our personal power generating stations, producing pure and perfect AC from a powerful analog based AC regenerator and is the power source of choice for almost any size system. Smaller than the P10, this workhorse should be the foundation on which you build your system when a P10 isn't in the cards.

The P5 Power Plant takes in the old AC and, using an internal powerful class A/B power amplifier, generates new, low distortion AC in its place. Gone are the times when your system sounds better at night or during the day, with the P5 in place it will always sound great. The P5 has 4 separate regenerated zones and 1200 watts of pure regenerated power that can handle any size system you want to power. From medium to large power amplifiers to the smallest pieces of source equipment, the P5 will work magic on your system's performance.

With your system powered directly from the output of the P5, dynamics and openness are breathtaking.

    The Hazards of Love

The Hazards of Love is the follow-up to the The Decemberists 2006 breakthrough, The Crane Wife, voted favorite album of the year by NPR listeners. With their fifth full-length album, the Portland-based quintet of Colin Meloy, Chris Funk, Jenny Conlee, Nate Query and John Moen solidifies its standing as one of the most innovative creative forces in music today. In an age when singles rule and the death of the album has been pronounced by many, The Decemberists have fashioned an anomaly: a record that demands to be listened to from start to finish and reveals more with each subsequent play. The 17-song suite, recorded with the bands longtime producer, Tucker Martine, is rooted in ancient language and imagery, yet entirely modern and accessible. The Hazards of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake. Lavender Diamonds Becky Stark and My Brightest Diamonds Shara Worden deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while My Morning Jackets Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and the Spinanes Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles.

    Under The Sun

Gordon Gano, co-founder of and songwriter for alt-rock monoliths The Violent Femmes returns to the scene he helped spawn with Under the Sun. Film-scoring brothers and Bogmen members Brendan and Billy Ryan join Gano for Gordon Gano & The Ryans' first collaboration and Gordon's first non-Femmes release as a front man. Gano's influence on alternative music is immeasurable and his latest work is sure to remind the music world of the force and presence with which he originally stormed onto the scene in 1983, paving the way for the commercial explosion of alternative music a decade later. Gano's signature emotionalism is present in full force on razor-edged ballads like title track Under the Sun and the gorgeously unfurling Still Suddenly Here. Tense propulsion underpin Wave and Water and Man in the Sand. His most cohesive collaboration yet, Under the Sun marks the beginning of a promising partnership with The Ryans' and the return of a musical heavyweight.

    Mrs. Jones' Cookies (Discontinued)

Includes a CD quality digital download of the full album.

Empty Cellar Records presents the latest full-length platter by THE SANDWITCHES, Mrs. Jones' Cookies. San Francisco's Sandwitches have been plugging away at their craft for a couple magical years now, sprinkling their barbed, alluring electric folk briars across unsuspecting gardens in the Bay Area and beyond. Previous releases, such as the swampy ecstasy of How To Make Ambient Sadcake and last year's oceanic ouija board of an EP, Duck Duck Goose!, captured distinct sides of the trio. Mrs. Jones Cookies is here now to unify their uniquely whimsical and creepy vision. Mrs. Jones' Cookies pours Sadcake's plaintive bounce into Duck Ducks celestial, mysterious drift, spiking the mix with a side they've previously only hinted at: a playfulness, a comfort. It's the sound of a band at ease with unease. Even when they're plumbing the most desperate depths, there's an unforced confidence in the lonely plucking of guitarists HEIDI ALEXANDER and GRACE COOPER. The shared vocal duties are where these ladies truly and finally let loose. On 'Lightfoot' and single 'Summer Of Love,' drummer ROXY BRODEUR punches out lively, soul-flecked trots, as Grace and Heidi tickle the end of their high and low ranges, returning later to those highs and lows with extra force and bluster, shooting out the lights with aplomb. The Sandwitches live for moments like this, teasing the listener with deceptively simple backing, then letting fly with soaring vocal saltwater taffy that can be scary, cartoonish, or both. Then, of course, the girls backtrack on a dime and plant a mournful lullaby in your lap, as affecting and otherworldly as you'll ever hear and complete with a wandering flute. Features guest appearances from JAMES FINCH JR., SHAYDE SARTIN, and DIC STUSSO.

This release compiles long out of print singles, EPs, cassette and compilation tracks from the BLANK DOGS archive. Not a complete representation, but a wide breadth of the material recorded from this period not released on the full-length albums of this period, On Two Sides and Under and Under. All the material is prior to the Phrases and Land and Fixed era, prior to the increase in fidelity, during under the hazey gauze of mystery and imperfect yet melodic noise. Consider it a parting shot to that period of the project. This release is in conjunction with a multi-week European tour which includes the Primavera festival. None of this material has ever been on CD, and some of it never before on vinyl, completely remastered.

Moxie Bravo from the High Strung features the song The Luck You Got from Showtime's Shameless.

Though Moxie Bravo is the High Strung's first album as a trio, they opt for refinement instead of reinvention on this set of songs. Reunited with These Are Good Times producer Jim Diamond, the band plays up its power poppy hooks and close harmonies instead of the garagey leanings of their debut. The song The Luck You Got is being used as a theme song to the US version of the show Shameless.

The Book About My Idle Plot On A Vague Anxiety (Awaiting Repress)

The Japanese group Toe when releasing their debut The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety must have come to conclusion to release something dynamic and free. While at heart their debut is a calming, melodic post-rock affair, it adds interesting stop and go rhythm sections within the bulk of some of the album, a clear math rock influence. What is telling about Toe's work on this album is their clear potential to become more. Their dynamic, yet limited buildups aren't the ones you hear from traditional, uproarious, and grandiose groups like Explosions In The Sky! or more traditionally Godspeed You! Black Emperor; instead their clean shaven take on guitar structure and fantastic drumming by Kashikura Takashi is what matters the most. Rarely, if ever are piano structures, obscure samples, or electronics of any kind are introduced within The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety, which frankly is impressive.

The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety is at its core a strict representation of a minimalist post-rock affair. Its structures carry on by themselves without a huge ambient uplifting or pretentious, high-flying strings to back up any track. The album moves smoothly as it should, but Takashi's skill is exceptional, he carries this album with his smooth, diverse drumming. Amazingly it doesn't tire at all. Stylishly the band approaches an almost back-and-forth method between the rhythm portion of the album and its percussion - at times silencing out one to showcase the other, as seen in Past and Language. The album moves freely without hesitation or uncertainty, making the music so effective, but the parts not whole is really only needed as the structures don't need to be completely built up in an awe-inspiring 10-20 minute epic, but a melodic, serene, more or less peaceful 5 minutes of them almost jamming. Oddly enough this perception of them in a free-form basis of jamming is clearly not a reality because the rhythm structures and percussion fills are exceptional at their timings all over this debut.

The biggest strength of this Toe's debut is their patience within these tracks. Unlike other short, quick outbursts such as Grails, Toe still find themselves building the song suitable to their strengths and comfort zone. When they decide to trek outside of these waters, they're very minimal, in an experimented quick duration as seen in Music For You and Hangyaku Suru Fuukei. When the group decides to ramp up a song, they do so immediately from the inner-workings of Takashi and by doing so carve out a quick, tasteful foundation to start off on, evidence by I Still Do Wrong. While their stripped-down approach that feels almost too pure for most post-rock listeners, they seem to take their strides from Do Make Say Think and their label associates Mouse On The Keys and Enemies. What The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety accomplishes is a rhythm section that is entirely tight and sustained, that at times should feel timid or stale, but the drumming is frankly superb, allowing the band to reach new heights.

Phantogram is an American electronic rock duo from Saratoga Springs, New York. Formed in 2007, Phantogram is Josh Carter (vocals, guitars) and
Sarah Barthel (vocals, keyboards). The band name was partially inspired by an optical illusion called a phantogram, in which two-dimensional images
    appear to be three-dimensional.

They described their sound as street beat, psych pop. According to Josh, their music has lots of rhythms, swirling guitars, spacey keyboards, echoes
    and airy vocals.

The band released their first studio album, Eyelid Movies (2009), to critical acclaim.
The band has played and toured with bands including: The xx, Ra Ra Riot, M83, Metric, Beach House, Zero 7, Yeasayer and countless more.

In 2014, the band will release their major-label debut and sophomore release Voices.

    Soft Connections

In 2005, at the age of 14, Nic Hessler created the alias Catwalk to write, record and
perform his music. Armed with Wipers and Roy Orbison records, an 8-track recorder and a
garage, Nic set out to make Catwalk the next great guitar-oriented California band like many
teenagers before him. Two tiny run 7" singles on the now defunct Yay! imprint soon appeared,
making the rounds through independent record stores and mail order distributors. This led to
the 18-year-old Nic to sign to the also new and young label, Captured Tracks. Two C/T 7"
releases in 2010 and 2011 followed, leading up to a full-fledged Catwalk LP and tour in 2011.
Press reaction was swift and, as interest was grew, Nic garnered support in his hometown of
Orange County, CA to assemble a tour line-up for the LP. However, none of that would ever
    happen.

Around this time, Nic was struck with an ailment that kept him sidelined for quite sometime:
Guillain-BarrÉ Syndrome. No walk in the park, GBS prevented Nic from playing guitar,
leaving him partially paralyzed for the bulk of this lost period. While this was obviously detrimental
for Nic and Catwalk, strangely, it may have helped the musician Nic Hessler's career.

Now ditching the moniker of a hypothetical band, Nic re-emerges in 2015, healthy and reinvigorated,
with a more fully-formed and ambitious sound: the sound of Soft Connections, his
debut LP years in the making, though he's now just 23. Soft Connections bridges the songwriting
influences of the vintage American powerpop of Emmit Rhodes and Alex Chilton, along
with UK giants like The Kinks and XTC. Tracks like Hearts, Repeating and I Feel Again-two
classic singles in the radio sense of the word-show the maturity in craftsmanship Nic's been
    honing these past four years.

The making of Soft Connections was a lengthy process that took place during a crucial period
of musical growth and self-exploration. It's an optimistic and introspective record about being
in-and-out of feeling - on the brink of a personal breakthrough, yet still seeking direction,
purpose, truth and permanence. Anchored by the Catwalk favorite (Please) Don't Break
Me - a song that, at one point, could very well have launched Nic into indie celebdom -
this record is now a send-off to Nic's lost time; he's moved forward, sounding better than ever
and ready to soundtrack your long road trip or failed crush. This will be the first record in what
we all hope to be a lengthy string of great albums.

The Soft Moon was never intended for the public's ears, but you found it,were drawn in by its danger, and insisted that others hear. Oakland's Luis Vasquez began the project in order to better know his own self. He'd holed up in his apartment and let the tape roll, allowing gut and memory guide him. Those twin sherpas, however, led him to a place of darkness, claustrophobia and dread: a musical wasteland moving to a Motorik tic, its edges made jagged in the image of early post-punk, swathed in the moody atmosphere of vintage darkwave.

    The Past We Leave Behind

Mike Simonetti has decided to split from Italians Do It Better (Chromatics, Glass Candy) to focus on his new project, Pale Blue, as well as his new venture: the freshly minted label 2MR (Two Mikes Records). A collaboration between Simonetti and Captured Tracks, 2MR is an opportunity for Simonetti to start from a blank slate and release music he believes in. The first release on 2MR will be The Past We Leave Behind, the debut album from Pale Blue. During the writing process of Capricorn Rising, Simonetti was asked to remix tracks from the West Coast twosome Silver Hands. Immediately taken by the incredible range of lead-vocalist Elizabeth Wight, he reached out to collaborate. The result of the bi-coastal email exchange would eventually become Pale Blue. Pale Blue, referencing the term "Pale Blue Dot" , coined by Carl Sagan to refer to a photograph of planet Earth taken by the Voyager 1 space probe in 1990, was originally conceived around the time that Hurricane Sandy hit New York and came to completion with Simonetti's severance from Italians. Thus, many of the tracks that make up The Past grapple with themes of loss and new beginnings. The Past encompasses a myriad of sonic elements, ranging from rhythmic, melodic techno to atmospheric ambient productions, while also incorporating Simonetti's varied background in noise, drone, and even experimental dream pop. Above it all though, Wight's vocals remain the focal point, saturating the record with a lush melodic warmth that's so often missing in the electronic world. Musically, Pale Blue is a response to modern dance music and its constant fluctuations. It intentionally bears no obvious singles, nor club hits. While Simonetti, Wight and Jana Hunter (vocals on "Dusk in Parts") remain at its core, Pale Blue's philosophy is to keep everything open to collaboration. It does not aim to pigeonhole itself into a genre or any new vistas in music, but instead to a unifying sound produced collectively and harmoniously.
