Cowboys From HellPantera's 1990 major label debut Cowboys From Hell was as heavy as anything of its day and it served as both the band's breakthrough and a great influence on the state of metal music. Featuring the guitar virtuosity of Dimebag Darrell and the vocal ferocity of Phil Anselmo front and center, Cowboys From Hell turned Pantera into the preeminent metal band of the early '90s and put the remnants of the '80s metal scene to rest. Far Beyond DrivenBy the time Pantera released 1994's Far Beyond Driven, they were the most popular metal band on the planet, and as did its predecessor, Vulgar Display of Power, the album shot straight to the top of the Billboard charts. Amazingly enough, Far Beyond Driven features an even heavier and more extreme sound than on previous releases due to Dimebag Darrell's down-tuned and heavier sludgy guitar playing and Phil Anselmo's increasingly self-biographical lyrics. The Great Southern TrendkillThe 8th studio album by Pantera, originally released in 1996, reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. Due to tension among the bandmembers, Phil Anselmo recorded the vocals alone at Trent Reznor's Nothing Studios in New Orleans while the rest of the group recorded at Chasin Jason Studios in Dallas, Texas.
The Great Southern Trendkill features some of the fastest tempos and most down-tuned guitars that the band ever recorded. It also has a more experimental nature to its songs, such as the acoustic guitar and keyboard-laden Suicide Note Pt. I.
Unlike Pantera's first three major label albums, the vocals are often double tracked and layered to create a more demonic effect. An example of this can be heard in the chorus of 13 Steps to Nowhere, when Phil Anselmo's singing voice is backed up by high pitched screaming, done by Seth Putnam.1. The Great Southern Trendkill

Vulgar Display Of Power1992's Vulgar Display of Power is arguably the heaviest album ever to debut at # 1 on the Billboard charts and it proved that heavy metal still had its place in the era of alternative rock. True to its title, Vulgar Display of Power is a raw and unrelenting depiction of rage and hostility, brought to a head by the pummeling guitar riffs of Dimebag Darrell and the militaristic snarl of Phil Anselmo. Songs like Fucking Hostile, Walk, This Love and Mouth for War remain some of the most popular songs in Pantera's impressive arsenal.1. Mouth For War

Reinventing The SteelOne of the preeminent metal bands of all time, Pantera put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passÉ.
As one of metal's most ferocious acts, with one of its most insanely devoted audiences, it's clear as an empty whiskey bottle that Pantera's impact and influence on heavy music is still being felt.
Lyrics about the band itself can be found through most of this album (We'll Grind That Axe For a Long Time) but also includes songs about their fans (You've Got To Belong To It).
Reinventing The Steel will all be reissued on 180-gram vinyl. Heavy Metal thrashers Pantera broke up in 2003. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was the victim of a tragic shooting in 2004 while playing with his band Damage Plan.
Dimebag Darrell called the band's most recent studio album, 2000's Reinventing The Steel, a best-of in its own right, a mix of elements from the albums that had preceded it. Even the closing epic, I'll Cast A Shadow, was a monster. Usually when we write, the songs come together really fast, says Dime. But sometimes, you'll be drilling at one for hours before you realize it ain't workin'. This was one of those. So we put it on the back burner, finished up all the other tunes, then went back to give it one more pull. We rearranged it, threw a few new parts in, and it really brought it to life. I think it ended up being the baddest-ass song on the whole record.1. Hellbound

History Of HostilityHistory Of Hostility is a nine-track Pantera primer that includes some of the band's most legendary tracks from all five studio albums on Vinyl.
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. The group was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers - drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell - along with vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band the following year, replacing the original unofficial bass guitarist Tommy D. Bradford. Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released four albums during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in 1986. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced a groove metal sound. The sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited even heavier sound. Burn My Eyes (Awaiting Repress)
180 Gram Gold Colored Vinyl
Limited To 1500
Released to massive European acclaim, Machine Head's full-length debut, Burn My Eyes, successfully bridges the gap between second-generation Bay Area thrash (Testament, Death Angel, etc.) and the modern-day Pantera school of hard knocks. Produced by underground stalwart Colin Richardson, Burn My Eyes is a bone-shattering exercise in brutality that gives Pantera's classic, Vulgar Display of Power, a good run for its money. A veteran of the Bay Area thrash scene, guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn emerges as Machine Head's anchor. As guitar player of the riff-heavy yet vocally challenged band Vio-Lence, Flynn had already distinguished himself as a riff-making machine on tracks like Serial Killer and Kill on Command. Interestingly, with the release of Burn My Eyes, every effort was made to cover up Flynn's involvement with his ex-bandmates. Looking back at it, it's easy to understand why. Because of the quick word of mouth in the underground metal community, comparisons to his ex-bandmates would have limited the impact of the record, possibly thwarting its merits. If Vio-Lence held promise, Machine Head was a different proposition all together. Anthems like Davidian are monstrous slabs of metal that, by far, eclipse anything Flynn had previously done. Nevertheless, Burn My Eyes is a classic debut and one that helped launch a huge European groundswell for the band that would result in a tour as Slayer's support act. A few months later, the Head would return and headline the very same venues in which they'd opened for Slayer.

Inquisition SymphonyCello-playing Finnish quartet Apocalyptica's sequel to their well-received first album departs from the safe haven of Metallica covers (only four tracks) and introduces material by other heavy metal bands, and even a few originals.
Of the latter, Harmageddon is probably the standout track, and while most Metalli-fans will be eager to hear the group's rendition of the smash hit One, the song takes a backseat to inspired renditions of earlier classics such as For Whom the Bell Tolls and Fade to Black.
As for the other bands covered, the arrangements of Pantera's Domination and Sepultura's Refuse/Resist are rather dull, but Faith No More's From Out of Nowhere works surprisingly well, and the group's performance of the album's incredibly complex title track (another Sepultura original) is simply stunning.1. Down II: A Bustle in Your HedgerowThis was Down's first album in seven years since the release of NOLA, the longest gap between the band's Four studio albums to date. Since Down was a supergroup, the band went on hiatus in 1996 so that members could focus on their main bands (namely Eyehategod, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Pantera). Down reformed in 1999 with Pantera bassist Rex Brown replacing Todd Strange. The band wanted the album to have a bluesy feel, so they moved into Phil Anselmo's barn, dubbed Nödferatu's Lair, in southern Louisiana where they lived and recorded the album in 28 days without anyone leaving the house.LP1

Walk Through Exits OnlyWalk Through Exits Only is the career-first solo album from Philip Anselmo, legendary frontman of Pantera and Down.
Produced by Philip Anselmo and Michael Thompson, and recorded over the past couple of years at his New Orleans studio, Nodferatu's Lair, with his band The Illegals - Marzi Montazeri/guitar, and drummer Jose Manuel Blue Gonzales, Walk Through Exits Only is abrasive, aggressive, anthemic and 100% Anselmo. The album's eight songs are as unstrained as it gets, from Battalion of Zero to Usurper's Bastard Rant, to the album's title track that goes against the grain and right through the exits. Brash, brutal guitars cut through punishing percussion as Anselmo screams with uncompromising ferocity and uncontainable fire.
It wasn't about doing a paint-by-numbers thrash or heavy metal record, Anselmo explained about the project. It's an angry album that only I could do. I don't see anybody else out there screaming about the same shit I'm screaming about. On this album, there isn't any wordplay, there isn't any hidden message, it's all right there in front of you.
On Walk Through Exits Only and over his entire career, Anselmo hasn't just paved his own path, he's bulldozed it with his bare hands.1. Music Media Is My Whore

Smoke On ThisWho is Rex Brown?
To the industry, fellow musicians, and a legion of fans around the world, he's the bassist for Pantera, one of the biggest hard rock and metal acts of the past few decades, alongside Nirvana and Metallica. They had Number One albums with minimal support from traditional commercial outlets and went platinum several times over. Pantera rode a groundswell of underground loyalty, earned through several years of blood, sweat, and road beers. Five major label albums, countless international tours, and a series of carnage-filled home videos cemented a legacy as large as their massive riffs and the band's insatiable appetites for mayhem, authenticity, and brotherhood.
Brown wields a six-string guitar as confidently as he wore the bass in Pantera and Down. His engaging voice crackles with easygoing spirit and truth-telling power. It's a crunchy drawl that's down-to-earth, grippingly relatable, charmingly welcoming, and gritty, somewhere between the achingly resonant spiritual shamanism of Tom Waits and the instantly recognizable every man AM radio vibes of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.1. Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight SoundtrackOpaque Green Vinyl - Limited To 750 Copiesl
Wanna hear the soundtrack to Armageddon? This 1995 film starred William Sadler as the Demon Knight, who, along with his new recruit, Jada Pinkett Smith, is charged with fending off The Collector (Billy Zane) and his army of demons from acquiring an ancient relic that is the only thing preventing the complete destruction of the human race. While the flick did meh box office and was panned critically, the soundtrack was easily one of the best of its era and of its kind, an all-star line-up of thrash and heavy metal acts mostly doing otherwise unavailable material (only the track by Pantera appears to have been released prior to the movie). The Pantera, Megadeth, Melvins, and Biohazard entries are particulary good, and the one hip hop tune on the collection, Gravediggaz' "1-800-Murder," is an archetypal "horrorcore" rap song. But perhaps the best tune is "Hey Man Nice Shot" by Filter, an outfit that hadn't released anything prior to this soundtrack. Hell Bent For LettersAlternative Tentacles tosses our well-worn thinking cap into the no-holds-barred, no-child-left-behind ring of Educore with Hell Bent for Letters, the latest outing by Seattle's BLOODHAG. Formed in 1995 to stimulate a communion between literacy and punk/metal, BLOODHAG boasts a lineup of noted science fiction authors Prof. J. B. Stratton, Dr. J. M. McNulty, Sir Zachary Orgel and the shadowy occultist Master Brent Carpenter. They created the genre of Edu-core and operate under the motto Th e faster you go deaf, the more time you have to read.
While BLOODHAG's minute-long songs have the common theme of esteemed authors such as George Orwell and Philip K. Dick--and their live shows include between-song mini-lectures as well as pelting of the audience with books--the music counters with the blunt force of bands like BRUJERIA, PANTERA, SEPULTURA, etc.
It's open to debate whether Edu-core can actually pummel literary history into the hungry minds of head-banging youth, but we certainly can't blame BLOODHAG for trying to bridge the gap between death metal tombs and Pulizerwilling tomes or the beer-soaked venues and pristine libraries (yes, they really tour public libraries).
With their neckties and pocket protectors cocked and loaded, BLOODHAG is ready to stave off the dumbing down of America. So, invest in the leaders of tomorrow! Buy Hell Bent for Letters today!

A metallic rush of guitars and thundering drums, Deftones' music both epitomizes the hard-and-fast glory of post-grunge alt-metal and blows it wide open with innovation. As the Northern California-bred quintet evolved through a string of acclaimed albums and incessant, high-velocity touring, they also incorporated modern rock influences including The Cure and The Smiths into their Soundgarden/Tool/Rage Against the Machine/Pantera-inspired sonics. Metal Church is the self-titled debut album of the heavy metal band of the same name. The album was originally released independently in 1984. Based on the success of the album, the band was signed to a recording contract by Elektra, who reissued the album in 1985. The cover art depicts a cruciform Gibson Explorer hidden in shadows and smoke.
Some of their most notable songs are the opener Beyond The Black, their title track, the instrumental Merciless Onslaught, Gods Of Wrath (which is different from all the other songs, as it had clean vocals, clean rhythms, and fluent solos) and the Deep Purple cover Highway Star.

Eyehategod (Awaiting Repress)Legendary New Orleans gods of sludge, excess and mayhem EYEHATEGOD release their new, self-titled album.
Mixed by Sanford Parker, Eyehategod will feature the final recordings of EYEHATEGOD drummer Joey LaCaze, who passed away last August of respiratory failure. He also suffered from severe long-term asthma. He has since been replaced by Aaron Hill, who comes by way of New Orleans' local acts MISSING MONUMENTS and MOUNTAIN OF WIZARD.
In a recent interview with NPR, EYEHATEGOD frontman Mike IX Williams stated about the band's forthcoming album: We started out the recording with Billy Anderson. He recorded the drums, bass and some guitar, but that was a mess. There was a documentary crew in there filming, and it was distracting away from our time recording. Jimmy [Bower, guitar] was having a couple problems at the time too, waiting for his kid to be born, so it was a weird time to be in the studio. We ended up using just Joey's drum tracks from Billy. He's awesome - I love him and there's no hard feelings, but we just wanted to finish it somewhere else. We got Steve Berrigan to come out to where I live two hours outside of NOLA, and redid the bass and the guitars. Phil Anselmo [PANTERA, DOWN] gave me some ideas for the vocals, like how we did the ARSON ANTHEM record; me and him work well together.
Asked if EYEHATEGOD ever considered giving up following Joey's passing, Mike said: It was never an option as far as I'm concerned. I don't think it was for anybody else either.
This all happened at the end of September, when we'd just gotten back from a six-week tour of Europe. He's had pretty bad asthma ever since I've known him, and in Europe he was having these weird sleep apnea things when he was sleeping. It was a breathing issue, a respiratory thing, but I don't know; I'm not a doctor. So when we got back, that's when he passed away, so there was a little bit of time in there when we had to think - 'We've got shows booked. What do we do?' We did have to cancel probably 50% of them, but we still just said, 'Let's keep going, that's what he would want us to do.' We'd even had conversations before, when Joey and I would talk, and he'd ask me, 'Who would you get to replace me?' Things like that, and just be honest with each other. He knew the band would keep going, and he wanted it to.
To me, it's just part of life; it's just the way things happen, what cards you're dealt, how life treats you.
We don't know how to give up. That's been the story of our entire career, our lives, even without the band. We just don't know when to quit. It's just a matter of moving forward.
