Passion For Vinyl (Book)240-Page Book With 7 Vinyl Single
7 Vinyl Single: Rinus'Garage Feat. Triggerfinger - The Wall Of Dolls / Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell - Electric Fogg
This book is a tribute to vinyl, a format that is making a spectacular comeback recently, although for many music lovers it never really disappeared.
Brazilian superstar Ed Motta came to Holland to buy an apartment, but spent all his money on vinyl instead. When a young Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth discovered a scratch on his recently bought Bathory LP he demolished his bedroom. It's Atlantic's CEO Craig Kallman mission to own all relevant albums on vinyl. He has 750.000 already. That's what vinyl does with music lovers.
In Passion For Vinyl a wide selection of DJ's, musicians, label owners, designers, record dealers, collectors and engineers like Henry Rollins, Bernie Grundman, Hans Pokora, Chris Ellis, Steffi, Mala, Vaughan Oliver, Lee Dorrian, Jacco Gardner, John Dyer Baizley and many others share their unconditional love for vinyl. They muse about the first record that changed their lives, talk about their prized collectibles and explain why they were determined to keep vinyl alive. Passion for Vinyl also tells the history of Record Industry, the Dutch factory that has been pressing vinyl since the 1950's.
Passion For Vinyl is written by Dutch author, music journalist and incurable vinyl fanatic Robert
Haagsma. With an introduction by American vinyl guru Michael Fremer.

Passion For Vinyl Part II: An Ode To Analog (Book)252-Page Book With 7 Vinyl Single
Includes a Limited Edition White Vinyl 7 Single Feat. Hasil Adkins, Bloodshot Bill And Ellen Allien
Record stores are popping up again everywhere. New vinyl pressing plants are opening in America, Europe and Asia. Young vinyl enthusiasts - both male and female! - are swarming to record fairs looking for old and new records to build their collection. When Passion for Vinyl Part 1 came out, there was still some doubt about the comeback of vinyl. Wasn't it all just a hype? Now, five years later, even the biggest sceptic can't deny it: vinyl is back and it's here to stay!
In light of all these new and exciting developments, a follow-up to the successful and well-received first volume of the Passion for Vinyl book (four stars in Record Collector magazine) is more than viable. DJs, musicians, engineers, designers, shop managers, record label CEOs and collectors like Dischord's Ian MacKaye, Norton's Miriam Linna, singer-songwriter Ryley Walker, musician and producer T Bone Burnett, Abbey Road's half-speed maestro Miles Showell, DJs Sven VÄth and Ellen Allien, designer John Kosh and many others tell about the records that changed their lives, their love for vinyl and the impact its resurgence has had on them. Passion for Vinyl Part 2 also shows how analogue recording techniques are making a comeback in the recording and mastering studios.
In the last few years, countless music lovers have (re)discovered that nothing beats listening to a vinyl record on a proper stereo set. It makes the listener connect with the music like nothing else.
This book is a tribute to that unique experience.
Passion for Vinyl Part. 2 is written by Dutch author, music journalist and vinyl fanatic Robert Haagsma. With an introduction by Michael Kurtz, co-founder of Record Store Day.

Passion (Discontinued)STUNNING 180 GRAM CLEAR VINYL LP VERSION OF THE NEW ANAAL NATHRAKH ALBUM
Anaal Nathrakh was created for one purpose - to be the soundtrack for armageddon, the audial essence of evil, hatred and violence, the true spirit of necro taken to its musical extremes. Since being founded in 1999, the band has gained a reputation for embodying precisely these things, with a history including not only the release of five albums and an EP to rapturous acclaim, but collaborations with such legendary figures as Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Shane Embury and Danny Herrera (Napalm Death), Nick Barker (Testament, Dimmu Borgir), Joe Horvath (Circle of Dead Children), Sethlans Teitan (Watain) and so on. This, alongside appearing on BBC Radio 1 at the personal behest of sadly missed icon John Peel, headlining a stage at the renowned cult Inferno Festival in Norway as their debut international live appearance, countless placings in best album of the year polls and album of the month awards in the press and cover appearances on leading magazines such as Terrorizer Anaal Nathrakhs status as one of the leading lights in extreme metal is undeniable. Hallmarked by breathtaking musical ferocity, inventiveness and breadth, married with a mercurial, intensely misanthropic and sharp intelligence, Anaal Nathrakhs sound is imbued with a palpable sense of menace that is virtually unmatched in metal. For 2011, the band present the digested and re-vomited results of an 18-month journey through slings, arrows and outrageous misfortune. Intended in the most scourging sense of the word, Passion is an encoded vision of agony; desolation taken as the inspiration for incalculable rage. This is only abetted by contributions of twisted misanthropy from Rainer Landfermann (Pavor, Bethlehem), Alan Dubin (Khanate, Gnaw etc) and the utter blackness of Gnaw Their Tongues. Glorying in their Pyrrhic epiphanies, Anaal Nathrakh have developed a deeper understanding of horror and Passion is the focused, distilled and above all bleakly triumphant result. Passion - Music for The Last Temptation of Christ was released a year after Martin Scorsese's controversy-laden film and tends to be regarded as a work in its own right rather than just being a movie soundtrack. Passion & WarfareImport
Steve Vai started his career working for the legendary Frank Zappa. Later on he recorded and toured with Public Image Ltd., Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth and Whitesnake. Passion And Warfare is his second solo album and was released in 1990. It is acclaimed as his best album, finding him coming into his own as a composer, as well as bypassing vocals almost entirely. Because Vai is a much more distinguished composer than most of his guitar-shredder colleagues, who most of the time are simply showing off their technique, Passion And Warfare is possibly one of the richest and best hard rock guitar-virtuoso albums ever.1. Passion of the Christ (2004), composed by John Debney, is the original score for Mel Gibson's controversial film The Passion of the Christ. The soundtrack received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score and it was on the first place in both Top Christian Albums and Top Soundtracks in 2004. In 2005, the album won a Dove Award for Instrumental album of the year at the 36th GMA Dove Awards.
The soundtrack succeeds as a coherent, moving, well-executed musical statement whether or not has seen the film. The album is a combination of folk instruments, Eastern-tinged harmonics, solo, and choral voices. Debney has used the Indian master violinist and vocalist L. Shankar, and singer/double-violinist Gingger Shankar.
Debney's soundtrack is an interesting and highly recommended work. It will offer those who choose to encounter it a far-reaching and deeply affective listening experience that is as aesthetically beautiful and unsetting as it is evocatively familiar.1. The Olive Garden / Night Sky

For GyumriFor Gyumri, the third Nonesuch recording from pianist and composer Tigran Hamasyan, is a companion to 2017's An Ancient Observer. Hamasyan named the new album in tribute to his hometown of Gyumri, Armenia. These songs are musical observations about the world we live in now, he says, and the weight of history we carry with us.
Born in Armenia in 1987 before relocating with his family to Los Angeles in 2003, Tigran Hamasyan currently resides in Erevan, Armenia. He began playing piano at the age of three and started performing in festivals and competitions when he was eleven years old, winning the Montreux Jazz Festival's piano competition in 2003. Hamasyan released his debut album, World Passion, in 2005 at the age of seventeen. The following year, he won the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Piano Competition. Subsequent albums include New Era (2007); Red Hail (2009); A Fable (2011), for which he was awarded a Victoires de la Musique (the equivalent of a Grammy Award in France); Shadow Theater (2013); Luys i Luso (2015); and Mockroot (2015), for which he won the Echo Jazz Award for International Piano Instrumentalist of the Year. In addition to awards and critical praise, Hamasyan has built a dedicated international following, as well as praise from Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and Brad Mehldau.1. Aragatz

Thought For FoodRemastered
When multi-instrumentalists and sound enthusiasts Paul de Jong and Nick Zammuto first came together, they surely could not have foreseen their debut album, Thought For Food, becoming such a beloved genre-defying masterpiece, an album that rests firmly in countless Top 100 Albums of the Decade lists.
Filled with endearing and enduring songs, the Books revisit their wide-eyed beginnings with this remastered Thought For Food, repackaged with all-new artwork and expanded to include lyrics for every song for the first time ever. Carefully and thoughtfully remastered from the original mixes by Zammuto at his new studio outside his home in Vermont, TFF now boasts a warmth and clarity that surprisingly reveals an increased harmonic depth.
Having combined and refined their compositional and recording processes over the course of four albums, addressing the technical limitations of these earlier recordings offers the chance to marry the technical, musical and emotional aspects of these songs in a way like never before. To be sure, the differences are subtle, but for a band who have transformed minutiae into modern art, that subtlety is downright sublime.1. Enjoy Your Worries, You May Never Have Them Again

Prayers For The DamnedRock luminaries, Dj Ashba (Guitar), James Michael (Lead Vocals) and Nikki Sixx (Bass), collectively known as SIXX:A.M, today have unleashed their new album, Prayers For The Damned, via Eleven Seven Music.
Setting the stage for the new album, their first single, "Rise", is a call-to-action for everyone to stand up for their beliefs. Describing the song's message, Michael explains, "Throughout history, some of the most dramatic changes have occurred when people reject the status quo and demand change. 'Rise' is about how we find ourselves at a global tipping point and how it is our duty as citizens of this world to come together, communicate with one another and rise up to demand more of ourselves and our leaders."
With two U.S. Billboard top 20 albums and a string of hit singles already under their belt, Prayers For The Damned represents the band's most ambitious, complete and adrenaline-soaked effort to date. James Michael once again, plays triple-duty on Prayers For The Damned as vocalist, the album's producer and mixer, thereby solidifying the unique musicianship of this beloved hard-rock outfit. The introspective cover art for Prayers For The Damned is an original design created by guitarist Dj Ashba, further proving that all aspects of this album are a collaboration of true passion for the band.
"SIXX:A.M. is in the most creative place of our careers," says Sixx, "For James, Dj and myself, we think it's the perfect time to release so much quality music to our fans who've been supporting us over the last 3 albums." Michael agrees, "The double-albums will leave no stone unturned in our quest to create important music and push the boundaries of rock." Ashba concludes, "We are on a mission to give our fans even more than they could have hoped for, both musically and visually."
The band's previous release, 2014's Modern Vintage, featured the breakout single, "Stars," which sold over 73,000 copies, peaked at #5 on the Active Rock Chart and #4 on the Mainstream Rock Chart, making the band the #10 most played active rock artist of 2015.

For Long TomorrowFor Long Tomorrow is the second full length album released by Japanese math rock band toe.
Toe is one of the few post-rock bands out there that's easy to listen to. The band's sound is quite distinctive compared to their Western counterparts, preferring clean guitar settings and some choice effects in almost all of their songs. Unlike well-known post-rock bands like Sigur Rós and Explosions In the Sky, Toe's music can be described as light and melodic, with rare instances of distortion and vocals. The Japanese band is comprised of Kashikura Takashi on drums, Mino Takaaki and Yamazaki Hirokazu on guitars, and Yamane Satoshi on bass.
So far, Toe has released two albums and a few EPs. Their first full-length album, The Book About My Idle Plot on a Vague Anxiety, was well received by both local and international fans. It can be described as dynamic and free, with Takashi's drums dominating the tracks. It was with this album that Toe established its distinct sound and song structure.
For Long Tomorrow's overall sound is similar to their debut, but there is promise in this more experimental second outing. Toe shows that they've matured musically, as demonstrated by their extensive use of the Rhodes piano, acoustic guitars, and minor vocals in their songs. Although they have introduced new elements to their music, much of Toe's style remains intact, from their clean and melodic guitar riffs to their upbeat drum patterns.
A noticeable change in this album is that Toe's drum beats have been toned down, blending into the band's overall sound. Despite this, Takashi's jazzy and upbeat drumming still has the same energy that was present in their previous album. The addition of samplers into solos or breaks provides texture to their songs. Takaaki and Hirokazu's guitar playing continuously moves from acoustic to electric, changing the feel of most of the songs.
The first few songs in For Long Tomorrow showcase the band's usual upbeat instrumental tracks. The second track, "Vanishing Point and Whistle," has a sound reminiscent of Toe's debut. Many listeners consider the vocals from "Say it Ain't So" to be forced and awkward sounding, but it's part of the band's move to expand their musicality.
"Two Moons" and "Goodbye" are two very captivating tracks. "Two Moons" has a mainly acoustic vibe, with a vibraphone part that makes it melodic and light. On "Goodbye," Japanese singer Toki Asako collaborates with Toe to create a pensive and moody song.
Other songs on the album ride on Takashi's beats, which are sometimes reminiscent of Toe's original groove. Many of these songs are structured with a slow intro, followed by repetition, finishing with a climax. Noticeably upbeat tracks are "You Go," "Can't Hear Mosquitone Anymore #2," and "Long Tomorrow."
Toe's second album may sound at times like an extension of their debut, but the level of experimentation in For Long Tomorrow provides the light, upbeat sound the band was looking for. If Toe continues to innovate and improve their music, they'll be crossing continents and gaining new fans soon.

Hell Bent For LettersAlternative Tentacles tosses our well-worn thinking cap into the no-holds-barred, no-child-left-behind ring of Educore with Hell Bent for Letters, the latest outing by Seattle's BLOODHAG. Formed in 1995 to stimulate a communion between literacy and punk/metal, BLOODHAG boasts a lineup of noted science fiction authors Prof. J. B. Stratton, Dr. J. M. McNulty, Sir Zachary Orgel and the shadowy occultist Master Brent Carpenter. They created the genre of Edu-core and operate under the motto Th e faster you go deaf, the more time you have to read.
While BLOODHAG's minute-long songs have the common theme of esteemed authors such as George Orwell and Philip K. Dick--and their live shows include between-song mini-lectures as well as pelting of the audience with books--the music counters with the blunt force of bands like BRUJERIA, PANTERA, SEPULTURA, etc.
It's open to debate whether Edu-core can actually pummel literary history into the hungry minds of head-banging youth, but we certainly can't blame BLOODHAG for trying to bridge the gap between death metal tombs and Pulizerwilling tomes or the beer-soaked venues and pristine libraries (yes, they really tour public libraries).
With their neckties and pocket protectors cocked and loaded, BLOODHAG is ready to stave off the dumbing down of America. So, invest in the leaders of tomorrow! Buy Hell Bent for Letters today!

Music For A New Society

Re-Mastered From The Original Tapes And Overseen By John Cale
Over 50 years in the arena of Contemporary Music and John Cale remains as active and unpredictable as
ever; is there a more restless and ruminating spark of an artist, who, at the age of 73, admits he still goes
to the studio every day and writes? From classical roots as a precociously gifted Welsh boy to modernclassical
experiments in New York, that lead to co-founding The Velvet Underground, Cale has filtered
that mindset through singer-songwriter, proto-punk and post-punk prisms. His endless fascination has
kept us endlessly fascinated, as Cale has consistently created new fissions, including the digital advances
of the day, absorbed by hip hop as much as conventional songwriting.
Which is where we find Cale at this precise moment, with not just the re-mastered version of one of his
most unique and lauded solo records, the 1982 masterpiece Music For A New Society, but a complete
new reworking of the album under the title M:FANS, a record that explores the relationship between
old and new, in terms of the sound and vision, and Cale's memories of the experience, in terms of his
life, and the recording. M: FANS ends with "Back To The End", a previously unfinished outtake that Cale
rediscovered among the original tapes, whose haunting spectral mood matches anything on the 1982
record. (This version retains Cale's original vocal and piano while adding viola). Back and forth M:FANS
goes, sampling the original, while creating brand new soundscapes, giving Cale the opportunity for
closure on one of the most testing eras of his life, and a way to keep moving forward.
Music For A New Society had a fraught birth, to say the least. With Cale having folded his Spy label
imprint into Michael Zilkha's Ze Records, and retired his band for a run of solo concerts, Zilkha proposed
an album to capture this new phase. Rising to the challenge - "a very good one" - Cale created a brief
for the exercise; to only allow himself the ten days booked in the studio to complete the record, and to
only set the tape rolling when he was ready to improvise. Cale once recalled the recording process as,
"like method acting. Madness. Excruciating. I just let myself go. It became a kind of therapy, a personal
exorcism." But that fed into the album's extreme qualities; its nerve-shredding raw intimacy, its fractured,
In 1982, Music For A New Society sounded exactly like its title: something futuristic, a new kind of
songwriting exercise. In 2015, M:FANS is exactly that too, full of electrical crackle and disturbed
frequencies, a different kind of dystopian future awaits. John Cale forages on; it's the only way he knows

Screaming For Vengeance (Awaiting Repress)Screaming for Vengeance on Numbered Limited Edition LP from Mobile Fidelity Silver Label
Double-Platinum 1982 Blockbuster Remains Judas Priest's Most Commercially Successful LP
Includes Electric Eye, Screaming for Vengeance, You've Got Another Thing Comin'
Dual Magnesium-Burn Guitars, Leather-Tough Percussion, Molten-Hot Melodies Help Form Triangular Equilibrium of Speed, Accessibility, and Attitude
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
You've got another thing comin'! Distinguished by dual magnesium-burn guitars, leather-tough percussion, molten-hot melodies, and the unmistakable piercing falsetto of operatic vocalist, Screaming for Vengeance became the soundtrack to millions of music lovers' lives in the early 1980s as Judas Priest continued to lay waste to its contemporaries' softer, cheesier hard-rock styles. An effort on which precision-based speed, mainstream accessibility, and resilient attitude meet in triangular equilibrium, the 1982 set remains the British metal legends' top-selling record.
Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this Silver Series numbered limited edition LP shows off the grand intersection of daring adventure and commercial purpose achieved via ironclad production values and entrenched grooves. The latter particularly benefit from this analog pressing, as the group never overlooks the importance of rhythm and pace even when stoking tempos to engine-combusting levels. Leagues ahead of the sonics gracing its peers' albums from the time, the sense of balance, separation, and realism is on par with that of big-budget rock creations.
Staked by the breakout "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," which burns white-hot with foot-pounding riffs, prize-fighting percussion, and singer Rob Halford's gun-for-hire blare, Screaming for Vengeance clutches hold of the jugular and doesn't let go. A return to the band's gritty, purist roots, the record revisits the themes of darkness, menace, and the unknown firmly established on the pioneering Stained Class and Killing Machine. Along with those albums, and British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance is the template for the catchy albeit uncompromisingly heavy crossover success Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax enjoyed years later.
With the one-two opening tandem of the instrumental "The Hellion" and stomping "Electric Eye," overseen by Halford as if he's embodying the persona of a wicked James Bond villain, Priest sounds utterly futuristic and terrifying, the instruments seemingly on a swivel and the sawed-off tones flooding the guitar solos with intimidation. A classic head-out-to-the highway anthem ("Riding on the Wind"), a racing proto-thrash banger ("Screaming for Vengeance"), and a scorching exorcism ("Devil's Child") function as the metal-hued bolts that hold the foundations of this Top 20-charting benchmark in place.
Perhaps more so here than on any other record, Priest spit-shines hooks and collusive six-string harmonic leads to perfection, giving listeners ying-yang doses of pain and pleasure, sweet and bitter. Songs at once invite sing-a-longs and fist-pumping responses. Screaming for Vengeance marked the last time Priest would sound this heavy in the 80s. No wonder it was voted the 12th best metal album of all time in Martin Popoff's definitive book of the same name.

Open BookFred Hersch has long been acclaimed as an exploratory artist, an outspoken activist, an influential educator and a uniquely revelatory and lyrical pianist. As one of the most expressive voices in modern jazz, Hersch has never been shy about letting listeners glimpse his most intimate thoughts and emotions. In September, however, Hersch's fans will be treated to even deeper, more revealing insights into the story of the renowned pianist when he publishes his much-anticipated memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz. As a companion piece, Hersch decided to present an equally direct and vulnerable glimpse into his private musical thoughts with his 11th solo release, Open Book.
The seven pieces on Open Book (set for release via Palmetto Records) offer some of the finest, most unguardedly emotional solo music that Hersch has created in a career unique for its profound poignancy and passion. Recorded in a South Korean concert hall on a superb Hamburg Steinway concert grand piano, the album captures the vital essence of the revelatory adventurousness and intense beauty that have made Hersch one of the most important solo artists in jazz. With more than 40 albums to his credit as a leader or co-leader, Hersch remarkably continues to discover new areas of inspiration and depths of feeling.
For the last two and a half decades I've been pretty open about who I am, what I like and what I'm dealing with at times, Hersch says. But I've always got to dig deeper, and I thought this might be a chance to make an album that's a window into the kinds of things that I play at home or don't play in public all that much.
The album arrives during a momentous month for Hersch. On September 12, the esteemed publishers Crown Archetype (Penguin Random House) will release Good Things Happen Slowly, Hersch's bravely confessional memoir. The book covers the pianist's meteoric rise in jazz from his sideman days alongside masters like Art Farmer and Joe Henderson to his gradual recognition as one of the most individualistic and innovative artists of his generation, a ten-time Grammy Award nominee and winner of countless accolades including being named a 2016 Doris Duke Artist as well as the same year's Jazz Journalists Association Pianist of the Year. But it also frankly reveals his story as the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz musician, tracing his path through hedonistic post-Stonewall New York City to the dramatic two-month medically induced coma in 2007 from which he emerged to make some of the most stunning and captivating music of his career.
Later that month Hersch will reprise his ambitious Leaves of Grass full-evening piece at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room, the first time the song cycle has been performed in New York City since 2005. Vocalists Kurt Elling and Kate McGarry will reprise their roles from the original project, which sets the verse of American bard Walt Whitman. The legendary poet's timeless ode to the miracle of nature and openhearted love of all beings seems especially vital in our present socio-political moment.
The centerpiece of Open Book, and the spark that ignited the album, is the nearly 20-minute improvisation Through the Forest. Unique in Hersch's extensive discography, the stream-of-consciousness gem is a miniature masterpiece of narrative development, a compelling journey through an abstract, glimmering landscape, revealing that in his early 60s Hersch continues to take creative risks and daunting inventive leaps.
The creation of Through the Forest was as unplanned and spontaneous as the music itself. In Seoul for a pair of solo concerts during a break in a tour of Asia with his esteemed trio, Hersch overslept during an after-breakfast nap and rushed to take the stage at JCC Art Center Concert Hall for his afternoon performance. The titular forest is, in part, a jetlag and coffee-fueled dreamscape through which Hersch wanders, applying his vivid powers of observation to unusual terrain. I was a little groggy, my defenses were down, and rather than fight it I just gave in to it, Hersch recalls. I'd never really done anything of that length in public where I had no agenda and was able to stay in that zone for such an extended period of time. I realized it was something special, something different that might be the core of an album.
Through the Forest became the leaping-off point for an album intended to be singularly divulgent and reflective. A few months later, Hersch returned to the same hall and recorded the remainder of Open Book alone in the empty venue (with the exception of Benny Golson's classic Whisper Not, taken from a concert during that return engagement).
The album opens with the stark musings of The Orb, taken from Hersch's autobiographical music-theater piece My Coma Dreams. A love letter to Hersch's longtime partner, AIDS activist Scott Morgan, The Orb is the final dream depicted in the show, and in this solo rendition becomes a nakedly heartfelt outpouring of raw but tender emotion. The mood then takes a turn for the playful and swinging on Whisper Not, a longtime staple of Hersch's repertoire that here becomes a vibrant, virtuoso marathon of thematic exploration.
The piece also serves as an ideal mirror to the album's other composition from the pen of a jazz icon, Thelonious Monk's Eronel. Hersch has long been recognized as one of the premier interpreters of the Monk songbook, but despite including one of the iconic composer's pieces in every one of his sets for most of his career, Hersch had never tackled this particular tune, co-written by pianist Sadik Hakim. Monk's original stride-inflected lines come in for a dizzying array of variations in Hersch's endlessly imaginative take.
The music of Brazil has also been a constant in Hersch's career, in particular the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, the subject of one of the pianist's earlier solo efforts, 2009's Fred Hersch Plays Jobim. Picture in Black and White is a new addition to that repertoire, majestically transformed from a bossa nova feel to a crystalline hybrid with Chopin's last nocturne. On the other side of Through the Forest in the album's symmetrical structure comes Hersch's own classical-flavored Plainsong, a spare, lyrical piece composed in the bucolic setting of the MacDowell Colony, the inspirational artists' retreat in rural New Hampshire.
Open Book ends on a meaningful ellipsis, Billy Joel's moving And So It Goes. In title alone it's an apt conclusion, suggesting an embrace of life as lived and hinting at its open-ended continuation. The full lyrics, which Hersch has performed in duo settings with singers including frequent collaborator Kate McGarry, remain unspoken here but obviously deeply felt in every note. I connect with the sentiment of the words, Hersch says, and it felt like a good benediction to the whole album.1. The Orb

Brahms: 10 Intermezzi For Piano (Speakers Corner)Johannes Brahms: Intermezzi op. 76 no. 6 in A major, no. 7 in A minor; op. 116 No. 4 in E major; op. 117 no. 1 in B-flat major, no. 2 in B-flat minor, no. 3 in C-sharp minor; op. 118 no. 1 in A minor, no. 2 in A major, no. 6 in E-flat minor; op. 119 no. 1 in B minor
If you mainly connect the name Brahms with opulent symphonies, passionate concertos and weighty piano music, you will be in for a big surprise when you listen to the Intermezzi op. 117. The music critic Eduard Hanslick talks of a more restrained, detached style and clearly means the calm, simple and immensely expressive flowing melodies, which characterize the late piano music of this Romantic composer. Just how sensitively the performer must tackle these precious miniatures is described by Clara Schumann with the words » the intellectual technique in them demands a fine comprehension and one must be very familiar with Brahms to play them as Brahms had imagined them«.
When it comes to Brahms, Glenn Gould - famous for his analytically strict and emphatic interpretation of Bach's keyboard works - proves himself to be a true poet and thinker at the keyboard. Driven by the melancholy force, his thoughts find their way, sometimes hesitantly, then moving on with a deep breath, as it were, to the next deceleration.
In op. 118 no. 1 the Canadian pianist begins with a passion that wrests expansive cascades of sound from the keyboard, then finds his way back to introvert mellifluous tones (op. 118 no. 2) and increases the drama in the will-o'-the-wispish and futile attempts to come to a redemptory final cadence (op. 118 no. 6). It would be hard to find a more closely-knit and intense rendering than on the present recording.
- Glenn Gould (piano)

About Speakers Corner
At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.
During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.
A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.
We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.
We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.
To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.1. Intermezzo In E-Flat Major, Op. 117, No. 1

Improvisations For Theremin And Piano (Awaiting Repress)An album as unique as it is hauntingly beautiful, this collection of improvised pieces by theremin prodigy Carolina Eyck and fellow Leipzig-based pianist Christopher Tarnow is the only album of its kind. Recorded in close collaboration with producer Allen Farmelo, these tracks truly challenge the accepted rules of any genre. The music carries the harmonic sophistication of classical, the quasi-atonal sensibilities of Coltrane and an unexpected sense of wonder and play.
Yet there is a darkness that lurks between the notes, a haunted sensibility informed by the production team's near miss of a lethal pedestrian-car accident that killed a young boy just days before the sessions. It's a feeling they couldn't shake, and it lingers in the music, adding depth and power to Eyck and Tarnow's virtuosic command of their instruments.
Eyck studied Theremin from the young age of 7 with Lydia Kavina, who developed the early technique with the now legendary student of Leon Theremin himself, Clara Rockmore. By age 14 Eyck had developed her own technique, which she published at age 17 in one of the most influential instruction books on the instrument, The Art of Playing the Theremin. Her technique is generally regarded as the most advanced in the world.
Farmelo's Producer's Notes provide both context for the theremin itself as well as insight into the way this team intentionally broke down the roles of composer, instrumentalist and producer in order to arrive at an egalitarian collaboration that would result in music borne directly from Eyck's own instinctual sense of her unique instrument. Rarely does one hear a performer from within the classical tradition play with such expressive freedom, and the team decided to leave all the music unedited in order to preserve that quality.
The broader goals of this album are to help free the theremin from the confines of stereotypes built up through Hollywood's sci-fi and horror soundtracks, as well as through the more recent adoption of the instrument into the noisier side of electronic music. Improvisations for Theremin and Piano presents the instrument's most virtuosic performer in an exceptionally candid and heartfelt recording.1. Earth and Sky
