Dye It BlondeSmith Westerns consists of Cullen Omori (vocals), Max Kakacek (guitar) and Cameron Omori (bass). All members range from ages 19 to 20. Since forming in 2007, Smith Westerns have managed to tour both the U.S. and Europe while supporting the likes of MGMT, Florence and the Machine, Belle and Sebastian, Girls and Passion Pit. Their self recorded 'lo-fi' self-titled debut was released in 2009 to critical acclaim for their youthful and glam rock tinged approach to pop music.
In 2010, Smith Westerns teamed up with Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TVOTR, Beach House) and current record label Fat Possum to record their sophomore effort in a proper studio. HauntsI stay up drinking with your ghost every night.
Haunts is full of memories. People you used to know. Rooms where you lived, streets you walked down. The lover you haven't spoken to in years who still lives in your dreams. Because the past is never dead. It's not even past.
Sometimes music is memory. The emotional memory of a songwriter, distilled into a way of viewing the world. Some songwriters are cartographers, mapping an inner landscape of hope and regrets. Each song is an invisible city, populated by ghosts. That is the land, and these are the people, of Tiny Victories' debut full-length album, Haunts.
Tell your ghost to leave me alone-
I can't sleep no more in my own home.
The surprise is that the tone of much of Haunts is joyous, even celebratory. Synths and electronic squiggles crash against pounding beats in ecstatic, orgiastic rhythms. Lyrically, though, the album is a compendium of love and loss. The contrast creates rooms of light and shadow (in "Scott & Zelda" or "Systems") or the oceanic catharsis of a party at the end of the world ("Austin, TX" and "This Revolution").
Tiny Victories' new album is a statement of purpose-and a point of arrival. The songwriting has evolved in a more focused direction, with a tighter structure, while Greg Walters and Cason Kelly continue to build on the experimental sonic architecture that fascinated them in their early days. Synth lines cut through through the dense underbrush of electronic soundscapes, propelled forward by Cason's relentless drumming. Greg's self-assured voice soars above the commotion. Haunts was produced and mixed by industry veteran Alex Aldi (Passion Pit, Holy Ghost!) and mastered by Chris Gehringer (Yeasayer, Chairlift, Jay-Z).
The song ideas were born in bedrooms crowded with samplers, Kaoss Pads and other electronic gadgets. Then the duo moved into Alex Aldi's Brooklyn studio in mid-2013. Aldi's studio was the de facto storage house for Passion Pit frontman Michael Angelakos' synth collection. Greg and Cason dove into this gear. Much of the record was performed on Angelakos' hardware.
Tiny Victories was formed in 2010 when Greg Walters met Cason Kelly in a Brooklyn bar. Both had played in a variety of other musical projects for years. Otherwise, they were an unlikely duo. Greg was just back from a six-year stint as a foreign correspondent based in Moscow, Russia. He'd covered the original Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan, and crisscrossed Siberia in a helicopter chasing after secretive oil company executives. During the Russian-Georgian war, he rode into the zone in a Russian armed personnel carrier as an embedded journalist.
"Journalism and music are both ways of making sense of the world," Greg says. "Journalism looks outward at what's happening around you. Music explores your inner life." Cason had recently moved to New York from Athens, GA, and was doing social work with inner city kids-a different kind of daily struggle. Both were burned out and looking for something new. They each wanted to take their music farther than it had gone before. They decided to start a band.
Their 7 vinyl debut in 2011 was followed by the critically acclaimed 2012 EP, Those Of Us Still Alive. John Schaefer of NPR's Soundcheck picked Tiny Victories as a local band likely to break big nationally, and invited them to do a live show on the air. Momentum began to snowball, culminating in invitations to play Bonnaroo in 2012 and 2013 and a slot on the Bonnaroo 365 tour with White Denim and Maps & Atlases.1. Drinking With Your Ghost

EvermotionGuster will release their first album in four years, Evermotion, fearlessly experimenting with new instruments and collaborations to create their most vibrant album yet. Produced by Shins keyboardist/Black Keys bassist Richard Swift, who has produced records for Damien Jurado, Foxygen and Stereolab, the new album bulldozes inhibitions, propelling the band to a harder-charging, more freewheeling sound.
The quartet of Ryan Miller, Adam Gardner, Brian Rosenworcel and Luke Reynolds recorded at Swift's Cottage Grove, OR studio in three whirlwind weeks - the fastest the band has ever finished an album. "We recorded with one drum microphone, used whole takes, didn't obsess over vocals or really edit things at all," said Rosenworcel. "It's a raw version of our band." Despite the stripped-down sessions, Guster's songs are packed with tight hooks, muscular guitar riffs, clanging percussion and surprisingly dark lyrics. The new album features adventurous turns on slide guitars, brassy trumpets and a glockenspiel, with sax and trombone accompaniment by Jon Natchez, whose stints with the War on Drugs, Beirut, Passion Pit and others have led NPR to call him "indie rock's most valuable sideman."
Guster started with two acoustic guitars and a pair of bongos and have since evolved and expanded their instrumentation, gaining a massive fan base that follows them to sold-out shows at New York's Radio City Music Hall and Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. The band's last release, 2010's 'Easy Wonderful,' earned their highest chart debut on the Billboard Top 200 and opened at #2 on iTunes. The album was praised by the Wall Street Journal for its "jangly, ebullient rock" and by USA Today for the "impeccable, infectious" songs that are "impossible not to feel," while Vanity Fair called it "feel-good" and Boston Globe hailed its "effervescent and thoughtful pop."1. In The WildernessStranger Cat is the new project from Cat Martino, Sufjan Stevens' right hand woman for
the Age of Adz tour and record, as well as All Delighted People. Cat was also a recording
and touring member of Sharon Van Etten's band circa Epic. She appeared with The Shins
on SNL and Williamsburg Park, played in Passion Pit at Governor's Ball, and sings on the
Son Lux record Lanterns. She has had the pleasure to support Indians, Night Beds, Rufus
Wainwright, Marissa Nadler, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Patrick Watson.
Cat retreated from Brooklyn, NY to winter in the Sierra Foothills to write and record
songs emerging from loops using her voice, synths, and percussion. With her pedal chain
and gear in a small cottage she explored the gamut from ethereal to turbulence. Simple
melodies or beats became powerful walls of sound melting through snowstorms, howling
winds and stark silence nestled inside gargantuan oaks and the infinite starry dome.
Joined by Sven Britt for a week, each of them traded making beats, or melodic parts on
casios, synths, guitars, branches and spoons, while the other recorded. Often a cat would
come to the door to listen, meowing to be let in. When it appeared daily they called it
Stranger Cat, and observed its alien supernatural powers, as she'd heard tell of the
Foothills' long history of UFO sightings and ghost haunts. One day they let Stranger Cat
in. The plump feline ate all the kitty food and left.

No Moon At AllWildcat! Wildcat!'s debut full-length, No Moon At All, ties the trio's indie-pop anthems into a cohesive widescreen vision. Packed with the Los Angeles-based band's uplifting musicality and angelic harmonies, the ten-track album, which features production from M83's Morgan Kibby, represents both a major artistic leap and the culmination of the group's rise since "Mr. Quiche" and their initial run of buzzy singles.
Featuring longtime friends Jesse Taylor (vocals, bass), Michael Wilson (vocals, keys) and Jesse Carmichael (vocals, drums), Wildcat! Wildcat! officially formed in 2012. Their early tracks, available as blog downloads and a single from the tastemaker label Neon Gold, led to the band's 2013 self-titled debut EP on Downtown Records, which received critical acclaim from NPR, Pitchfork, Time, Stereogum, Nylon, Paste, Huffington Post and more.
In early 2013, Wildcat! Wildcat! was the subject of the Sam Jones-directed documentary Hello Everywhere - a feature that depicted the band's journey from LA to SXSW for a massive concert with Passion Pit. The group has also toured with Alt-J, Portugal. The Man and MS MR.
On No Moon At All, Wildcat! Wildcat! achieves full headliner status. Its sweeping arc and range create an emotionally-rousing world for the band's infectious underdog anthems. "Tower" sets the tone with a dreamy build and explosive low-end, while lead single "Hero" mixes the group's innovative harmonies with dance production and an earworm chorus. "Holloway (Hey, Love)," with its skyrocketing emotions, is sure to play over many-a-movie's end credits, and "End Of The World Everyday" is a slinky, bold ballad.1. Tower // W.O.H.L.

Distraction"The newest hardest-working band in New York might just be one of the best"
...a pitch-perfect pairing of post-punk and indie rock.
Brooklyn-based four piece Bear Hands announce the release of their anticipated sophomore album
Distraction on Cantora Records. "Giants," the simultaneously whiplash-inducing and silkily-grooving debut single off Distraction, was released at the tail end of last year and quickly embraced at radio across the country with spins from tastemakers such as SiriusXM's AltNation, KKDO, KRBZ, KROX, WWCD, WBRU, WBUZ, WXXJ and WHFS. "Giants" is available now digitally in the US and Canada on iTunes and Amazon, and can be posted via their official lyric video HERE, as well as on SoundCloud HERE.
This winter, Bear Hands will join forces with fellow Brooklynites Miniature Tigers for a co-headlining tour, with support from Total Slacker. The jaunt begins on February 27th at Rough Trade in Brooklyn and wraps up on March 20th at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor. Additionally, the band will play South By Southwest in Austin in support of Distraction, with specific showcases to be announced soon. Full tour dates are below.
With Distraction, Bear Hands have shrugged off the notion of second album jitters to create an expansive sound that grew over three long years and thousands of miles on the road. Produced by guitarist Ted Feldman and mixed by James Brown (Nine Inch Nails, Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters), Distraction is a violently self-assured record which sees the quartet of Dylan Rau, TJ Orscher, Val Loper and Feldman distilling their anxieties and pleasures alike into perfectly twisted pop nuggets.
After releasing their debut LP Burning Bush Supper Club, Bear Hands criss-crossed America opening for the legendary GZA, Passion Pit, and AWOLNATION only to return home to Brooklyn and be distracted by the minutia of modern life and shallow urbanity. While avoiding each other for months, the band frittered away its time with help from the internet, serial monogamy, and recreational drugs.
Fortunately, this distance allowed the band to approach Distraction with a revolutionary new perspective. Their minds expanding and hearts imploding, Bear Hands set about matching new songs to familiar soundscapes. From the propulsive, infectious rhythms of "Giants" and the angular, warped melodies of "Bone Digger" to the widescreen sweep of "Thought Wrong," Distraction demands your attention - calling out for love from behind a mask of ones and zeroes, cardboard and vinyl.

Doodoo Face (Out Of Stock)When Wallpaper first emerged in 2005, the project was Eric Frederic's way of making earnest, artful music while satirizing the lack of genuine sentiment in mainstream pop. Then, the music was composed on computers and the lyrics were delivered strictly in Auto-Tune (almost unheard of at the time), further emphasizing the sterility of hackneyed song themes. In the four years since, as Wallpaper's become a genuine phenomenon via three well-loved EP's and an unforgettable live show.
The music of Doodoo Face is a significant step forward for Wallpaper. As established by his recent live-band remixes for Passion Pit and Das Racist, Frederic's become ace at merging the organic into the electronic. These are huge beats with infinite intricacy, the perfect tribute to Frederic's oldest influences: P-Funk, Afrobeat, and the panoply of Bay Area rap. From the cavernous thump and honking sax of opener Indecent to the warped hyphy of ddd to Doodoo Face, this is dark, nasty, load-bearing booty funk of the Oakland house party variety.

Up In Arms (Out Of Stock)We work hard, and we have a lot to say. Look around the planet - people are fed up with the corrupt ruling class. They destroy the planet and kill millions for profit, and the formula for our response is simple: Anger + applied knowledge = results. Don't just bitch. Change it.
- JOHN JOSEPH
At its purest, there is little that can match the visceral thrill and empowering spirit of hardcore. As frontman of New York City hardcore kings Cro-Mags, this is something John Joseph knows very well, and with Up In Arms, he and his Bloodclot compatriots deliver a furious collection that hits hard on every level. "In this band we're doing what each of us have always done: give it our all," he states plainly.
The results reflect the roots and passions of the individual members. Danzig/Murphy's Law guitarist Todd Youth was the first piece of the puzzle. "We've always talked about doing this record together, Todd had songs written and I had notebooks full of lyrics. In late September 2015, I went out to LA to do a triathlon and injured my calf muscle, so I couldn't race, and Todd said he could get some studio time. So, we went in and cut the demo. While there are things we may perceive as a negative in our lives, in fact the universe has a bigger plan, and that experience ultimately resulted in the record." Having been friends with Queens Of The Stone Age and Danzig powerhouse drummer Joey Castillo for three decades, the two musicians had long admired each other's work, and their collaboration has been a long time coming. Following Castillo's suggestion of bringing in Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age/The Dwarves) to handle bass duties, the lineup was complete. The songs that comprise Up In Arms manifested after the quartet plugged in and let the music speak for them. "We didn't decide to try to play anything, these are the songs that happened when we started jamming, and I love this band because there are no egos involved. Our goal is to make the best music possible, period. I love it when those guys contribute with melodies, etc., and I've even helped with some of the arrangements. Because we all think alike, our lyrics deal with the issues of the day, and that makes for better songs."
Every track on Up In Arms lives up to the rallying cry of the album's title - the bursts of high energy hardcore act as the perfect accompaniment to Joseph setting his sights on injustice and the seemingly endless flaws of the contemporary world. The breakneck thrashing of "Slow Kill Genocide" is an anthem for everyone sickened by those responsible for "killing the planet and all its inhabitants through industry and war. They're fucking maniacs and must be stopped." The suitably titled "Manic" attacks with bared fangs, Joseph making it clear that you can only push someone so far before they will react with violence - a call to arms for the disenfranchised who want tomorrow's world to be better than today's. Tracked at NRG in Los Angeles, the raw, old-school production that leaps out from the speaker comes courtesy of producer Zeuss (Hatebreed, Revocation), and the record was mixed by Kyle McAulay at NRG. From the moment the opening title track explodes to life, it's clear that everyone involved is having a blast and playing from the heart, and that this is no frills / no bullshit music at its most passionate - every song evoking mental images of utter chaos in a heaving mosh pit.
For anyone approaching the album for the first time, Joseph has only this to say: "Turn the volume way the fuck up!" And with plans to tour everywhere, Bloodclot will be getting in a lot of faces in 2017 and beyond. "We are already writing material and the next album is in the works. But, for now, all we want is to hit the stage to support 'Up in Arms', and every single night leave every ounce of ourselves up there."
