UP reveals itself to be another deeply personal statement with birth and death being near constant themes: it is what Peter calls a "book-end" record. Mostly recorded at Real World Studios the album came from hundreds of hours of recordings ultimately slimmed down to ten tracks. Produced by Peter and mixed by Tchad Blake and Stephen Hague. Vinyl Cut By Matt Colton At Alchemy Mastering, Mastered By Tony Cousins At Metropolis And Overseen By Peter's Main Sound Engineer Richard Chappell
Produced by Steve Lillywhite this third album saw Peter change his writing style; now the rhythm came before the melody and the songs were built up on top of the rhythmic sequences. The album delivered a top 5 UK single in Games Without Frontiers and Peter's first overtly political song in the shape of totemic closer Biko. It also features notable contributions from Kate Bush, Paul Weller, Phil Collins and David Rhodes. Half-Speed Remastered and cut to lacquers at 33RPM, on heavyweight LP. Vinyl cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy Mastering, mastered by Tony Cousins at Metropolis and overseen by Peter's main sound engineer Richard Chappell. These albums really have never sounded so good! Blow-Up is a soundtrack album by Herbie Hancock featuring music composed for Michelangelo Antonioni's cult film Blow-Up, released in 1966. Musically the songs evoke the ambience of swinging Sixties' London with grooves that create effective bluesy Jazz moods on the slow pieces, and funky ones on the up-tempo tracks.
The album features performances by Hancock on keys, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Newman on trumpet, Phil Woods and Joe Henderson on sax, Ron Carter on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums. Rumours go that either the fabled Jimmy Smith or Paul Griffin played the Hammond organ on this record.
Rock fans remember the film and the soundtrack for the inclusion of a rare Yardbirds number, Stroll On (actually, an adaptation of Tiny Bradshaw's The Train Kept A-Rollin'), one of only three songs they recorded with both Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page on guitars. The bassline to Bring Down The Birds was sampled by Deee-Lite for their 1990 hit single Groove Is In The Heart featuring Bootsy Collins.1. Main Title - "Blow Up"

Hurry Up, We're Dreaming (Colored Vinyl) (Awaiting Repress)Pressed On Clear Pink & Clear Blue Vinyl
With these soft spoken words on the simply-titled opening track-"Intro"- M83 mastermind Anthony Gonzalez introduces us to his sixth record and first double disc album, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.
Dauntlessly singing into the void that was left behind since Saturdays=Youth, Gonzalez suddenly surges with overwhelming emotion as the music mounts an invisible precipice. Historically, he softly eased you into his world, introducing you to the lush and radiant spaces between captivating melodies and intimate lyrics, but not this time. Not on this record.
Graduating from the fuzzy, fumbling emotional cobwebs and draped ambiance of past records, Hurry Up, We're Dreaming careens past its audience. Brazenly stretching out along the horizon, spilling glittery, golden arms of sound across the landscape, it holds your breath hostage without you even noticing you were missing it. If it seemed that Anthony was basking in the sunshine-drenched days of his youth when he released Saturdays in 2008, then it can be said that in 2011, at the age of 30, he is tempestuously charging towards his future with Hurry Up, We're Dreaming.
Relocating to Los Angeles from Antibes, Gonzalez surrounded himself with players pivotal to completing his childhood dream of a double disc record. Producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, The Mars Volta, Goldfrapp) and guitarist Brad Laner (from 90s band Medicine) had been hugely influential on Anthony growing up and now were central to the new record's creation.
"In France there is this show on TV where at the end there is a musical guest who plays one or two songs. I remember one night when I was a teenager being at home watching the best of performances and looking at this crazy bass player with a big afro and thinking, 'Wow this guy is so cool.' "And now I am working with him. It's so intense that thinking about it makes me feel weird. But it's weird in a super good way. Same thing with Brad, I was listening to his music when I was first getting into music and now he's on my album."
Anthony and Justin met backstage in 2009 at Scotland's T In The Park. Later, "he came to me very genuinely stating that 'he was a fan and that he would love to work with me,'" explains Gonzalez. "I love when people do that because I can tell it's coming from the heart. He was sincere and that's the way I like to work with people."
Stepping away from his work with producers Ken Thomas and Ewan Pearson on Saturday, Gonzalez freckles his new chapter with signature M83 fingerprints while pushing himself beyond the constricting emotions of a guarded musician. Bored with being frustrated and shy, Anthony is respectful of the precious time given to him and doesn't want to leave behind any regrets, thus thrusting himself into the spotlight vocally. He tests out different ways of singing, ranging from a spectral breathy whisper to a howling scream, and each voice clings to us like a dew-heavy spider web at dawn.
Fans will recognize band member Morgan Kibby, her vocals flirting with the shadowy places in between verses, leaping off the record in spoken word or blending with an adult choir. Morgan will join Anthony on tour but she was never meant to sing as much on this record as she had on pervious projects. Quenching his desire to work with a different person on each record, Gonzalez added LA-based chanteuse Zola Jesus to the mix for the completion of "Intro." "The song was already written but I really wanted a female vocal on it and I was kind of struggling to find the right person, but then I heard her music and it just made sense."
Where Saturday=Youth is drenched in lustful exploration and hungry adolescent wonder, Hurry Up is decadently cunning and seductive. "Intro" and "My tears are becoming a sea" eerily croon to you, swirling all of the glitter and growth from the past records into an epic swell, mysteriously and dramatically warning you of the impact you are about to experience. "Midnight City" (disc one) and "OK Pal" (disc two) are humid, adrenaline driven dreams unlike anything we have heard from M83 in the past. "Midnight City" adeptly sweeps you through abandoned concrete streets swimming in broken neon light and aggressively pushing and pulsating to synthetic beats. While "OK Pal" catcalls you to a locker full of mapped out Peter Gabriel-esque echoing lyrics, leaving you stranded in a post-apocalyptic landscape. These journeys are about awakening, craving and conquering. Throughout Hurry Up, We're Dreaming Anthony carries the listener to different countries of sound in his own universe, "We didn't need a story, we didn't need a real world. We just had to keep walking and we became the stories- we became the places." Drifting away from his previous records and reigned in politeness he unleashes all that he has been dreaming of and yearning for. Even when he takes a second to look back on "Echoes of Mine" the velvety, elderly voice of a woman heartbreakingly tells the story of a girl drenched in the shadows of her youth, knowing she has to grow up.
Grandiose in scale and inspired by Smashing Pumpkin's revered double disc Melancholy & The Infinite Sadness, Anthony has long had the goal to create his own monumental double disc record. "I saw when I was a teenager that I could dig into it [the album]. It was like a treasure. If I were a teenager nowadays I would try to find something as creative as this album. They had so much to say in their songs."
Impressed with the juxtaposing sun and moon artwork featured on Melancholy, Anthony focuses in on another natural duality: siblings. The cover artwork mirrors this relationship, featuring a photograph of a little boy with a little girl sitting on a bed. The photograph perpetuates the conversation for the two distinct voices we behind each disc, representing two sides of an overall piece that are almost the same. "I want people to listen to it as two different human beings that are connected somehow, but every song on the album has a secret on the other side."
Soaring and scraping up against the sky while sharing each uncharted frontier with new collaborators is what M83 does best. Gracefully coming into the next decade of his life, Anthony delivers what makes each record sincere, innocent, and full of joy: he gives us his past and his future.
"I think it is a reflection of my 30 years of being a human being. It's a compilation of all my previous music together. It's a retrospective of myself."LP 1

ADAD-SEC-9017xWar On Drugs, The
Philadelphias The War on Drugs, the vehicle of Adam Granduciel, frontman, rambler, shaman, pied piper guitarist and apparent arranger-extraordinaire, returns with Slave Ambient. On their debut, the life-affirming Wagonwheel Blues, and the follow-up EP, Future Weather, The War on Drugs seemed obsessed with disparate ideas, with building uncompromised rock monuments from pieces that may have seemed like odd pairs. Folk-rock marathons come damaged by drum machines. Electronic and instrumental reprises precede songs theyve yet to play, and Dr. Seuss becomes lyrical motivation for bold futuristic visions. Now, Granduciel has done it again, better than before: Slave Ambient, their proper second album, is a brilliant 47-minute sprawl of rock n roll, conceptualized with a sense of adventure and captured with seasons of bravado.
Slave Ambient features a team of Philadelphias finest musicians, including multi-instrumentalists Dave Hartley and Robbie Bennett, and drummer Mike Zanghi. Recorded throughout the last four years at Granduciels home studio in Philly, Jeff Zieglers Uniform Recording and Echo Mountain in Asheville, NC, the album puts the weirdest influences in just the right places. Synthesizers fall where you might expect more electric guitars (and vice versa); country-rock sidles up to the warped extravagance of 80s pop.
Instant classic Baby Missiles is part Spingsteen fever dream, part motorik anthem. Original Slave might sound like a hillbilly power drone, but City Reprise #12 suggests Phil Collins un-retiring to back Harmonia. I Was There is Harvest rebuilt by some selection of psychedelic all-stars, while the shuffling, sleepy opener Best Night offers a band with too many ideas to be in a hurry. During the mid-album centerpiece Come to the City, Granduciel howls and moans, All roads lead to me/I've been moving/Ive been drifting. Indeed, however unlikely that might seem, all these sounds arrive cohesively in one unmistakable place. Every song on Slave Ambient is instantly identifiable and infinitely intricate, a latticework of ideas and energies building into mile-high rock anthems.1. Best Night

Helen of TroyTo his chagrin, John Cale's record label released his unfinished demo tapes while he was busy producing Patti Smith's groundbreaking Horses. But to his surprise, the resulting album, Helen of Troy, is considered the most stylistically cohesive of the eclectic Island Trilogy, the trio of albums Cale recorded for Island Records during the course of 1974-75. Featuring Brian Eno's lithe synthesizer, Phil Collins' expert drumming, and Cale's manic streetwise songwriting, Helen of Troy delivers more sophistication than most final cuts, and cuts deeper in its roughness.
Back on domestic vinyl for the first time in decades, this RTI-pressed edition of Helen of Troy is cut at Mobile Fidelity by in-house engineer Krieg Wunderlich and features stunning sonics. Quiet surfaces, faithful artwork, and the opportunity to hear Cale's engaging fare unfold amidst wide soundstages and black backgrounds-not to mention the moody content within-make this Wax Cathedral LP a must for music aficionados.
From the celestial opening strains of My Maria, which sounds in places like a hymn, to the teeth-gnashing Sudden Death, Cale shows us heaven, hell, and the life in between. Employing a cocktail of wild experimentation, tonal versatility, and range of emotion, Cale's compositions whip from soaring serenades like I Keep a Close Watch to the unhinged, wild-eyed Leaving It Up to You (pulled from the original release due to its reference to the murder of Sharon Tate) to the soulful, surf-derived China Sea. Eno's synthesizer casts love spells and shadows while Chris Spedding's guitar drills bluesy, ragged holes through every composition. A tormented, sinister cover of the Modern Lovers' Pablo Picasso (Cale produced the Lovers' debut) shows what you get when you replace Jonathan Richman's dreamy smile with Cale's bared teeth.
Although we'll never know what the one-time Velvet Underground cohort had in mind for the finished product, with its labyrinthine arrangements, theatrical spontaneity, and primal rawness, Helen of Troy is a gem that's better unpolished.1. My Maria

In 1987, the Madonna of Folk returned to U.S. record shops with a vengeance, delivering here interpretations of songs by Dire Straits, Johnny Clegg, U2 and Peter Gabriel - performers, writes AllMusic, whose political consciousness had been formed by listening to old Joan Baez albums.

True ColorsA Vocal Tour de Force: 1986 Sophomore Effort Stacked With Big-Name Guests and Ambitious Arrangements
Grammy-Nominated Double-Platinum Set Includes Internationally Recognized Title Track Plus Top 10 Singles "What's Going On" and "Change of Heart"
Illuminative Sonics: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelity's World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI
Cyndi Lauper could've easily played up the independent wild-child pop persona she established on her breakthrough debut until the trend faded. Instead, on her superb sophomore effort, the charismatic artist opts for a more mature and creatively ambitious program, inviting big-name guests and pursuing deeper instrumental textures on a set that goes far beyond the well-known title track. True Colors is a vocal tour de force, an expressive statement on which Lauper showcases singing steeped in emotion, phrasing, and earnestness.
Bringing Lauper's rich timbre to the fore, and mastered on Mobile Fidelity's world-renowned mastering system, this RTI-pressed LP presents the 1986 album in the finest fidelity it's ever enjoyed. Period touches such as synthesized drumbeats and layered keyboards no longer sound blatantly artificial or canned. Instruments now possess a warmer, fuller roundness that fleshes out their role in the compositions. And Lauper's vocals-at times balladic, soaring, plaintive, stylish, and celebratory-occupy a defined place in the mix, anchoring songs etched with tonal expressiveness and diverse arrangements.
An all-star cast aids Lauper in shaping what remains a colossally underrated record. Billy Joel (vocals), Adrian Belew (guitar), the Bangles (vocals), Aimee Mann (vocals), Nile Rodgers (guitar), and Rick Derringer (guitar) are among the guests. So is Pee Wee Herman, whose telephone operator role at the conclusion of "911" speaks to the fact that Lauper didn't abandon her whimsical nature even as she pressed forward. Cajun accents, soulful motifs ("What's Going On"), and joyous covers of traditional fare ("Iko Iko") keep the album pleasantly varied and accessibly offbeat.
Of course, Lauper also turns in, with "True Colors," what's arguably her career-defining moment, the chart-topping single radiating with gorgeous elegance and graceful phrasing that forced audiences to regard the performer in a different light. For her boldness, Lauper was rewarded with two Grammy nominations and a song that has since been covered by artists such as Phil Collins and appeared as the theme for the 1988 Olympic Games and 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Intoxicating and memorably tuneful - Pitchfork
Gorgeously Weary - The Guardian
An idiosyncratic, deeply individual voice - Clash Magazine
The new album from Tropics, aka 27 year old Chris Ward, looks
outwards, armed with a newfound confidence that foregrounds his
vocal performance and songwriting.
It's a musical progression that mirrors a personal one: the early Tropics
output was all made in the idyllic, if isolated setting of Ward's
grandmother's empty house in the seaside town of Southsea, which
he moved into after graduating from university to focus on writing
and recording. He was alone there - "like, really alone. For days, I had
literally no distractions." Having moved to London in 2013, Ward now
splits his time between the city and the road, having played in
America, Mexico and across Europe throughout the past year with his
live band Keith Vaz and Morgan Hislop.
Tropics' new full-length Rapture is the culmination of this journey. A multi-instrumentalist
from an early age, Ward has always drawn on his musical upbringing
when composing, but this time around he's pushed himself to develop
a fuller sound than ever with the help of Vaz, Hislop and specialist jazz
drummer Gillan McLaughlin. Taking influence from Beach Boys, Max
Roach and Arthur Russell, Ward has crafted an album that fuses his
love of avant-garde percussion, 70s and 80s singer-songwriters such
as Peter Gabriel known for pop-leaning hooks, and deep production
that takes cues from ambient music.
The very first iterance of the record is the crystal clear vocal that kicks
off 'Blame'. Ward explains that performing live so much caused him to
step outside of his comfort zone: "I used to be a bit dubious about
using my vocal too much, and felt like my strength was in sampling
and playing keys. It's kind of switched now in that I feel a lot more
comfortable just holding a microphone and losing myself." Inspired by
the vocal performances of the likes of Little Dragon and Innovative
Leisure labelmates Rhye, Ward also found a new lease of life in
experimenting with more androgynous vocals.
But even as his sound has greater scope than ever before, Rapture is
still a deeply personal endeavour. The majority of the songs started
life in Ward's home, in front of a piano, before being built on in the
studio. The first half of the record is a chronicle of a whirlwind
relationship: the piano-led title track "Rapture" addresses this theme,
striving for the throes of ecstatic happiness but never quite making it
there. "It's got this feeling of hope and joy, even though it is coming
from a sad place," says Ward. "It's about the struggles in your life to
get to where you want to be." Elsewhere, lyrics such as, "You ran away
just like my luck did" hint at Ward's love for literature and his poetic
touch, something he further explores on the album's second side.
Later, the album grows more ambient and the literary references more
apparent. "Gloria" takes its name from the character of a frustrated
wife in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Beautiful and Damned. Likewise,
"Torrents of Spring" - also named for a work of 20th century American
fiction - builds to a sax-led climax over two painstaking minutes, and
the penultimate "House of Leaves" is "a really slow-burning ambient
instrumental; it's kind of a nod to the first stuff I made".
Whether filling dance floors or simply filling up your headspace,
Rapture is an intricate and intimate record that presents the many
faces of Tropics in a more revealing light than ever before.1. Blame

WARB-NON-9381xThe Black Keys
BrothersW/ CD version of the album included.
The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. With their 2008 Nonesuch release Attack & Release, the fifth album of their eight-year career which doubled the sales of their previous album and Nonesuch debut Magic Potion, guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney illustrated the durability of their few-frills sound, a mysterious and heavy brew of '70s-vintage rock, classic R&B and timeless, downhearted blues. Producer and pal Danger Mouse, their first outside collaborator, didn't try to reinvent their sound but further isolated its essence with the help of a few carefully chosen guest players and some retro-modern electronic gear. It didn't need to get slicker to get better, or, as the Boston Globe put it, Attack & Release proves that cleaning up the boys still won't stop them from tracking mud all over the house.
Danger Mouse returned to co-produce Tighten Up on Brothers, but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's Never Gonna Give You Up. The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on lead-off track Everlasting Light and The Only One; Howlin' For You opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who's who of New York City MC's, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRocBlack Keys fan Damon Dash. They've also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo Keep It Hid album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, Feels Good Together. Their maturation didn't happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we're brothers, and I think these songs reflect that. super-session organized by hip-hop impresario and
Brothers was primarily cut in Muscle Shoals, a setting that turned out to have more in common with the Akron, Ohio factories where the Black Keys used to record. The place was desolate, the town depressed, so once again the duo slipped into a world all its own. They did additional recording at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and The Bunker in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by engineer Tchad Blake, a veteran of sessions with Los Lobos, Pearl Jam and Peter Gabriel. Says Carney, The way he approaches mixing is the same way we approach making music. Junk"On the last album, there was too much of me." That's how Anthony
Gonzalez - the sonic auteur behind that most sublime purveyor of
symphonic-indie-electronic-dream pop, M83, describes the primary
inspiration behind his forthcoming album Junk, released on April 8 by Mute.
Highly anticipated, Junk is not just M83's first studio artist album in half
a decade; it's also the follow-up to Hurry Up, We're Dreaming - which
upon release in 2011 put M83 in the direct current of the mainstream. So
why would Gonzalez try to remove himself from its follow-up and supplant
himself with the surprising likes of Beck and Steve Vai. Wait, Steve Vai?
The legendary virtuoso guitar hero who defined an era? On a M83 album in
In trying to "remove" his identifiable musical presence, ironically Gonzalez
may have made one of his most personal efforts yet in Junk and with no
compromise. With Junk, M83 has succeeded in making what Gonzalez
called "an organized mess - a collection of songs that aren't made to live
with each other, yet somehow work together. From album opener "Do It
Try It", a fractured yet catchy mÉlange of old-school house music pianos
and pop-art bubblegum hooks worthy of ABBA, to "Moon Crystal," an
instrumental whose mutant retro-futurist grooves evoke Genesis doing a
prog-disco remix of the Love Boat theme, to the smooth new wave-meets-electro-funk
workout "Time Wind" (featuring vocals by Beck) to "Go!", an
exultant synth-pop charmer featuring vocals from new M83 collaborator
Mai Lan and guitar solo from legendary shredder, Steve Vai, one thing is
perfectly clear: "Every time I make a M83 album, I'm trying to do it on my
own terms - and it's the same for this one," Gonzalez says. "Whatever I do,
whatever influences I have, it ends up sounding like me. As a musician, I'm
just trying to take you somewhere else, beyond your world."1. Do It, Try It

AloneThe Pretenders are set to release their first album in eight years, Alone, via BMG. Recorded in Nashville and originally intended as a solo follow-up to 2014's 'Stockholm', it soon became obvious that those driving guitars, ragged but righteous arrangements, tough yet tender lyrics delivered by the most beautifully distinctive voice of a generation, sounded fantastically familiar. The Pretenders were back. 36 years after their remarkable first album, 'Alone' could be the older, wiser, badder sister to that exhilarating debut.
Chrissie Hynde recorded the album in Nashville with Dan Auerbach, from The Black Keys, who stood as captain, producer and multi-instrumentalist on the record, an album which sees Chrissie at her searingly honest, most incisive best.
The full band joining Chrissie and Dan on the album features Johnny Cash's former bass player Dave Roe and country rocker Kenny Vaughan on guitar plus sundry members of Dan Auerbach's side project The Arcs: Richard Swift, drums, Leon Michels, keyboards and Russ Pahl providing sly curlicues of pedal steel. The album was mixed by Tchad Blake (Arctic Monkeys, Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello). Duane Eddy also features on the punchy 'Never Be Together'.
Of the new album Chrissie Hynde said the following: "This record is what I love the most - real people playing real music. I sang and recorded every vocal in a 48 hour period - 48 hours to sing them, 40 years of preparation!"1. Alone

IvywildNight Beds, the musical project of 26-year-old Colorado Springs native Winston Yellen, received much acclaim for his 2013 debut album, Country Sleep, scoring plaudits for its tortured take on alt country and Yellen's soaring vocals. But after finishing that album and before Country Sleep was even released, Yellen began experimenting with the kind of melancholic, neon-tinged R&B that makes up the mesmerising Ivywild. The thread that weaves through all of Yellen's music and holds it together is his unmistakable voice - plaintive, yearning, soulful, heartbreaking. Whether it's ascending over the luscious epic-electronics of Tide Teeth or aching alone on Country Sleep's opener Faithful Heights, Yellen's voice has a unique beauty matched by few of his contemporaries. The second Night Beds album draws on Yellen's original love of Bill Evans through to J Dilla and is made up of what Yellen calls sad sex jams and was inspired by a long-term love and a break-up which looms large throughout the albums veiled lyrics. Its genesis can be found in the stoned night in Nashville when Yellen first heard Yeezus. Lying on the floor, Yellen blared the album at top volume. Ivywild is a truly collaborative effort with a makeshift team of 25 musicians, notably Abe, Yellen's younger brother and closest friend - his credit on the album comes above Winston's own, so much value does he place upon the work Abe put in. Additional vocals come from Heather Hibbard, a singer from Maine who features on over half of the 16 track album, and was contacted by the gregarious Yellen through YouTube, after he found a video of her covering one of his songs. She came out to the studio the very next day. Finessing the poignant assortment of songs was a sometimes painful task, but dedicated to the core. I felt at some points we were losing our minds, he says. Initial versions of Me Liquor and God band On High: were 17 and 33 minutes respectively while Finished took four months to record. His editing process though was simple: If it makes you cry, keep it in. Field recordings also flood the record, offering it a deep textural grain. It is a luxury record, but it has a worn shirt feel, explains Yellen. It's lived in. It's like a quilt - but it took forever, cutting up all the vocals and letting it breathe.1. Finished

In Tall Buildings is the aural representation of a
pleasantly scattered mind.
- AMERICAN SONGWRITER
Erik Hall worked patiently and solitarily for four years to craft Driver, his sophomore album as In Tall
Buildings. Produced between his home studio in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago and a 60's
farmhouse in Leelanau County, Michigan, the album comes twenty years after Hall originally fell in
love with home recording at age 13 - the year he got his hands on his first multitrack recorder.
Raised in downtown Chicago, Hall played drums and guitar in high school rock bands, and then went
on to study percussion and audio engineering at the University of Michigan. While in college he joined
the avant afro-funk band NOMO and met His Name is Alive's Warn Defever, who produced many of the
band's albums. Under Defever's tutelage, Hall honed many of the recording and production techniques
he would later apply to his solo recordings. As he explains, I was the guy in the band badgering him
with questions throughout the sessions, trying to learn everything I could and then trying it out
myself at home. As a multi-instrumentalist and producer Hall eventually went on to record and tour
with several groups, including old friends His Name is Alive and, more recently, dream-pop duo Wild
Belle, performing the rhythm section tracks and lending an engineering hand to their Columbia
In 2010 Hall's home recording efforts yielded the first In Tall Buildings album, which The Huffington
Post called gorgeous indie-pop, and the Chicago Tribune found hypnotic. In an interview with the
Chicago Tribune, he summed up much of his philosophy about composition with a pair of conflicting
quotes he attributes to Allen Ginsberg and Kurt Vonnegut, respectively: First thought, best thought
and Edit yourself, mercilessly. Loosely guided by these principles, Hall set out once again to
assemble a new batch of songs, when he wasn't recording and touring with other bands.
In stark contrast to the dense polyrhythms echoed by NOMO's albums, Driver uses a relatively simple
palette to create spacious pop songs, leaving plenty of room for Hall's often Peter Gabriel-esque
vocals to shine. The music, though culled from every guitar, keyboard, and drum he managed to fit
into his home studio, is powerful in it's restrained simplicity, and it's a compelling foil to the haunting
gravity of his vocal performance. Never rushed, his melodies deliver elliptical lyrics that manage to
feel intimate, while retaining a sense of mystery. Ultimately, the album's melancholic vibe is relatable,
rather than moping or histrionic, and in the end these songs are incredibly comforting and inviting.1. Bawl Cry Wail

'Palingenesis' is impossibly delicate, impeccably rendered neofolk; it is transporting and autumnal, bringing spectral figures into focus, exploring with curiosity and wonder the darkest heart of a vast folkloric wilderness. - Michael Nelson (STEREOGUM)
Derived from the greek words for 'birth' [genesis] and 'again' [palin], the term Palingenesis refers to a variety of concepts of rebirth and recreation, ranging from the stoic idea of the continuing recreation of the cosmos, the christian belief in spiritual regeneration through baptism, or the originally pythagoreean concept of the souls' transmigration into a new body. NEBELUNG take up the energy behind these concepts, using them as archetypal images for mans' eternal strive for spiritual perfection in a meditation on death and decay, transformation and renewal.
More than two years on the making, the release of PALINGENESIS defines a new era for NEBELUNG. Where its predecessors had been singing the hymn of autumn and night by the means of simply structured melancholic folk songs, PALINGENESIS takes on a different approach, transcending the boundaries of lyrics and song, sparing light and reason, and letting the music take on a direct and unaltered way to the depths of the subconscious. PALINGENESIS is a deep and transforming listen, with tracks built up like Mantras, tucking the listener into a dense and detailed tapestry of subtly woven, intertwining melodies and drones, rich in detail and structure, incorporating such a variety of acoustic instruments as both classical and steel stringed guitars, cello, accordion, indian harmonium, hammered dulcimer, glass harp, percussion and voice.1.
