In the summer of 2007, Tom Petty reunited Mudcrutch, consisting of himself, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, original band member Tom Leadon and Randall Marsh, who joined when Mudcrutch first went to Los Angeles in search of a record deal in the early '70s. Now, more than 30 years later, Mudcrutch finally has its debut album. With new Petty songs and a handfull of covers, the self-titled release is both classic rock and a rock classic.

Petty's first band, The Sundowners, changed their name to The Epics and then to Mudcrutch around 1970. Mudcrutch became the house band at Dub's Diner in hometown Gainesville, Fl, before the group moved to Hollywood. The Mudcrutch story is told in the recent Tom Petty feature documentary Runnin' Down A Dream, directed by Peter Bogdanovich.

I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers. I am over the moon about it. I couldn't have hoped for it to be as good as it came out. - Tom Petty

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are set to release a brand new album, Hypnotic Eye.

Their first studio album since 2010, Hypnotic Eye is the band's 13th studio album. It was co-produced by Petty, Mike Campbell, and Ryan Ulyate, reports Rolling Stone . Speaking to the publication about the album, Petty responded to comments that the release sounds like his earlier albums 1976's Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers and You're Gonna Get It from 1978.

That's what Mike said: 'You sing like you did on the first two albums, said Petty. Maybe this album does sound like that. But it's that band 30 years later... I knew I wanted to a do a rock and roll record. We hadn't made a straight hard-rockin' record, from beginning to end, in a long time.

The album will feature the songs American Dream Plan B, Faultlines, Red River, Burn Out Town and Shadow People. The release will be supported by a to-be-announced tour. Petty also commented that the band are far from finished. This band just grows and grows, and that's an incredible gift, I can't see us calling it off, he said.

    The Shelters

The Shelters have their self-titled debut LP coming from Warner Bros. Records. Just like the EP they released last October as an album preview, their full-length is a blast of Southern Californian rock and roll from a four-piece like they used to make them, when the factory was still up and running. Co-produced by Tom Petty, this album comes at you from behind, nothing you were expecting.

The Shelters had just banded together when Petty heard them and got a gut feeling about what they could be. He gave The Shelters the keys to his home studio and showed them a few things. Though mostly he left them alone, Petty had enough sense to leave the gear powered up. Maybe they were determined to show him he hadn't made a mistake. Maybe they just liked the way those old tube amps sounded. They seized the moment and got to work, insistent on becoming a band. A real band.

One listen to their single Rebel Heart, or any one of the other eleven songs on their debut, and you'll know they pulled it off. Led by the songs, harmonies and twin-guitar sound of Chase Simpson and Josh Jove, and powered by drummer Sebastian Harris's groove obsession, the band has put together a collection of recordings that have an immediacy, an emotion, and a musical intelligence that suggests these boys are beyond their years.

    American II: Unchained

The first four songs on Unchained come from the songbooks of Beck, Don Gibson, Soundgarden, and Jimmie Rodgers. What might look like absurdly
unsupportable eclecticism in other artists, of course, is pretty much standard stuff for Cash. Unchained is hardly standard, though; it's more like the best
album he's made since his 1984 departure from Columbia Records. Not only is this a stack of songs perfectly and idiosyncratically suited to the man,
they're given door-rattling backing treatment by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, who prove as fitting for Cash's music as his own Tennessee Two was
back in the day. --Rickey Wright

Two years on from his triumphant comeback album, American Recordings, 1996's Unchained took the blueprint of it's predecessor and added Tom Petty
& The Heartbreakers to the mix along with Marty Stuart, Lindsay Buckingham, Flea and many others. The results were just as fantastic, adding a different
dimension and fullness to the overall sound, but maintaining the mood and atmosphere that made American Recordings such a treasure. Songs written
by Petty, Chris Cornell and Beck rub shoulders with a handful of Johnny originals.

    Mojo

Some time in the last few years Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took a left turn. Maybe it was when Petty woke up in the night with the idea of reuniting his first band, Mudcrutch, to cut the album they never got a chance to make back in the early 70s. Maybe it was when the Heartbreakers assembled the mammoth multi-disc The Live Anthology, which detailed thirty years of concerts. Maybe it was when they gave all their home movies, outtakes and live footage to director Peter Bogdanovich to create the Grammy-winning four-hour career documentary Runnin' Down A Dream. There have been side projects and experiments since the band last went into the studio to cut a new Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album. With Mojo, they have taken their recent freedom and experimentation to heart. They have gone off the reservation and all signs indicate they aren't coming back.

The first thing that hits you about Mojo is that the spirit of the Mudcrutch sessions has carried on with the Heartbreakers. This is the sound of a band playing together in a room, not a studio, facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time.

Tom Petty says, With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. Mojo is where the band lives when it's playing for itself.

As for the songs, Mojo showcases a wide variety of American music from rock n' roll to country and both electric and acoustic blues. And then there are the images in Petty's lyrics which slip in on the melodies and set up a home in your head: The barefoot girl in the high grass chewing on a stick of sugar cane, the run-in with the law that begins when a carload of buddies decide to party with the motel maids, and the hilariously audacious idea of opening an album with an electric blues rocker about Thomas Jefferson's love affair with Sally Hemings.

Mojo has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out reggae number that is unlike anything that the Heartbreakers have done before. It's the kind of album nobody's supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

Mudcrutch have announced their second album, entitled "2, to be released by Reprise Records. The album is the follow up to the band's 2008 eponymous debut which Rolling Stone called "a country-rock instant classic" in a rave four star review.

Along with Ryan Ulyate, the new album was produced by band members Tom Petty and Mike Campbell. All the members of Mudcrutch contributed songs on "2, with seven originals written by Petty, and one each by band members Campbell, Tom Leadon, Randall Marsh and Benmont Tench.

Mudcrutch was initially formed in 1970 in Gainesville, Florida and is the precursor to the legendary Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Tom Petty (bass/vocals), Tom Leadon (guitar/vocals), Benmont Tench (keyboards/vocals), Mike Campbell (guitar/vocals), and Randall Marsh (drums/vocals) make up the band's current line up.

In 1974, Mudcrutch was signed to Shelter Records and moved to Los Angeles where they released one single, "Depot Street," to very little fanfare. The band broke up in 1975 and could have settled for being a legend, but instead Mudcrutch rose from the ashes in 2008 to remind us that the golden age of rock and roll bands still had a few treasures to unearth.

    Positively 4th Avenue

The ten tracks on Sun Wizard's debut album, Positively 4th Avenue brim with catchy sing-a-long choruses. The first single, World's Got a Handle kicks off the album with a Fleetwood Mac-style gallop, while the crunchy guitar tone and rasping vocals give it a dose of bar rock grit. The harmonica-assisted Middle of My Heart is similarly immediate, evoking Tom Petty with its sunny chord progression. Elsewhere on the album, the band flirts with folksy acoustic blues and shaggy southern rock guitar jams.
