    Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

Born out of restlessness and a steady hunt for inspiration, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a career-defining album, filled with the band's signature melding of synthetics and organics, sharp, danceable rhythms, infectious choruses with a considerable dose of aural panache, and candy-colored pop sensibilities. Staying true to what makes Phoenix so special, a sense of whimsical breeziness envelopes these songs in a state of utter pop perfection.

After a triumphant worldwide tour behind It's Never Been Like That, Phoenix, comprised of Thomas Mars (vocals), Laurent 'Branco' Brancowitz (guitars), Christian Mazzalai (guitars) and Deck D'Arcy (keyboards), decided to head out to the Montmartre house of friend, Philip Zdar of Cassius, to record in his studio. From opener and first single Lisztomania, it's clear that Phoenix is light-year's beyond anything they've done before. 1901 leaps out of the speakers with its fizzy power synths, rollicking drums and anthemic chours. Fences is velvet-smooth and soulful, with shimmering keys, chugging acoustic guitars and Thomas' lovelorn croon. Closing track Armistice is coiled and sinister, ending the album with staggered keyboard notes left hanging in the balance.

    Ti Amo

Ti Amo is Phoenix's first album since 2013's critically lauded Bankrupt!. Produced by the band and recorded at La GaîtÉ Lyrique (Paris) with the help of long-time collaborator Pierrick Devin, Ti Amo is - in the band's own words an album about simple pure emotions: love, desire, lust and innocence, it's also a record about our European, Latin roots, a fantasized version of Italy: a lost paradise made of eternal Roman summers (hyper-light, hyper-clarity, pistachio gelato), jukeboxes on the beach, Monica Vitti and Marcello Mastroianni, fearless desire and Antique marble statues.

    Bankrupt!

Phoenix have announced the release date for the Australian edition of their forthcoming record Bankrupt!, their first studio album in 4 years.

So far from the album, we've been treated to lead single Entertainment, a catchy indie rock number dressed in shiny synths, picking up where Phoenix last left off.

Guitarist Laurent 'Branco' Brancowitz has described Bankrupt! as an album of greater depth than previous Phoenix releases:

"This album has more layers. The more you listen, the more you hear, and the more you really understand what's going on. At the same time, we wanted it to be really fluid and simple like a sphere made of marble. You just see a sphere, but there's a guy who polished it for a year."

The follow-up to 2009s Grammy Award-winning Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, the French quartet have lofty expectations to live up to with Bankrupt!.

    Phoenix

With Phoenix, Everything in Slow Motion paints on the canvas of life a picture of a thousand words that somehow manages to bring together both the beauty of a Picasso with the raw and childlike grace of your little child's first finger-painting. On the one hand, the album is raw and brutally honest, telling the story of an addict who clings to drugs, anger, and all the pain-filled pleasures of the flesh. On the other hand, Phoenix presents the broken tale of a beloved child of God who reaches out to his Father, stumbles and falls, and then looks up for help, hope, and a grace he cannot provide for himself.

Facedown Records has waited until the eleventh hour (and twelfth month) to deliver one of the strongest albums the label has ever produced. Everything in Slow Motion builds upon everything that made Hands' Give Me Rest great, but somehow goes one step further. "Speak" is unquestionably a candidate for song of the year, while "The Fool" will reach into questioning hearts the way few songs are able to.

    The Phoenix

Once upon a time, CKY burned it all down, with a raucous, anarchic, hard rock sound soaked in the skate-punk culture that birthed them and a hard-partying lifestyle onstage and off that decimated relationships and reputations in its wake.

Now, CKY rises from the ashes of the aftermath with The Phoenix, a bold mission statement that hoists the flag high for big, raw, authentic, earth-shaking rock n' roll, liberated from useless pretense.

The Phoenix touches on anger, revenge, good versus evil, desperation, recovery, growth, knowledge, survival, enemies, friends, and more. There are heavy, dark, signature CKY grooves, "fun shit," "fancy shit," driving and almost danceable stuff, big melodies, total ear candy, immense diversity There are even parts that sound like maybe Quincy Jones was given the keys to Rancho De La Luna and just ran amok with the dudes in CKY.

    The Phoenix

One of the first fruits of Fhloston Paradigm rose out of the very popular 'King Britt presents Fhloston Paradigm' Hyperdub 12" in 2011, the name itself a fitting misspelling of the destination from the film Fifth Element, called 'Fhloston Paradise.' This initial EP won over many new fans with its inspired vision of how music with its DNA in a vintage future - formed by a childhood growing up with the peak of Science Fiction, from Close Encounters, to Blade Runner and Doctor Who - can sound. It hit upon a creative and adventurous way to fly above the needless analog and digital binary and represent both sides.

    The Phoenix And The Turtle

April 2014 will see the release of her new album entitled The Phoenix and the Turtle. Described by Beverley as a very personal album, it features songs written throughout her entire career, from her very first song, ''Sweet Joy'', to the previously unrecorded Nick Drake & Beverley Martyn song ''Reckless Jane'' which was started in 1974 when Drake lived nearby Beverley in Hampstead. ''We started writing the song as a bit of a joke,'' she says, ''When John and I lived in Hampstead Nick lived one stop down the tube line, and he would come around and babysit sometimes. I couldn't look at it for a long time after he died, but then finally I decided to finish it.''

''When The Levee Breaks' and 'Going To Germany' are songs Beverley used to sing with The Levee Breakers. Another song, 'Women And Malt Whiskey' is, in part, about John Martyn and other friends from the scene back then.

The Phoenix and the Turtle is Beverley's first album in fourteen years and was recorded in Wales with guitarist and producer Mark Pavey; it also features contributions from bass player Matt Malley, ex-Counting Crows and drummer Victor Bisetti, ex-Los Lobos which were recorded ''by the magic of computer'' in California. The album ''still has that in-a-room feel,'' said Beverley recently, ''it sounds like an old style analogue record. It's very me, very transatlantic.''

By The Time I Get To Phoenix

Glen Campbell's commercial breakthrough came by way of the title track, which was the direct precursor in production terms to Wichita Lineman, and by the same writer. The cover of Paul Simon's Homeward Bound is sincere if a little perfunctory, but Campbell's rendition of Ernest Tubb's Tomorrow Never Comes is a bravura performance, rich and soulful, as well as recalling Rodgers & Hammerstein's You'll Never Walk Alone as done by Gerry & the Pacemakers. Cold December in Your Heart harks back to Campbell's country-folk material, a piece of midtempo country-pop. Material like that and the similar Back in the Race, Dorsey Burnette's Hey Little One, Jerry Reed's You're Young and You'll Forget, and Bill Anderson's Bad Seed hold up better than more pop-focused numbers like My Baby's Gone, though the string backings on most of these very much date them. The final number here, the touching Love Is a Lonesome River, makes a brilliant coda.

    Give Up Your Dreams

    Colored Vinyl

New Zealand''s The Phoenix Foundation are all set to return with their new and sixth studio album Give Up Your Dreams. It's a shrewd and vibrant reminder that in The Phoenix Foundation's gloriously absurd world of Technicolour pop, it's the challenges you set yourself that reap the greatest rewards. "Give Up Your Dreams could sound like a defeat but it represents something quite defiant, joyous and celebratory" exclaims co-frontman Samuel Scott of the record's infectious rhythmic driven sound and optimistic feel. Channelling previous album Fandango's beauteous side, but this time fuelled by a spit ball of irrepressible energy, Give Up Your Dreams feels like the band's most contemporary offering yet. With the new addition of drummer Chris O'Connor, the album was written taking its lead from the rhythm section for the very first time; paving the way for an all new creative process. "I was convinced we had to have a different sounding record," explains Scott's counterpart singer/guitarist Lukasz Buda. "So we completely removed any trace of acoustic guitar. It was important to leave room for the band to take it somewhere else and make way for a new vitality." Thematically and lyrically the group typically took inspiration from various of sources. The dazzling title-track is a frank deglamourisation of life on the road spurred on by a conversation with dear friend, collaborator, and fellow New Zealander Lawrence Arabia. The energetic 'Mountain' is the ultimate counterpoint; an afro-kraut groove with layers of Television-inspired guitars and dreamscapes about the 'money men' controlling the world. 'Playing Dead' nearly didn't make it further than the cutting room floor but was revived thanks to the photographs in a 1950s Time Life essay on the Ona people of Tierra Del Fuego in southern Chile and their ghost rituals. Elsewhere in 'Jason' Luke sings about both the mother of his children and his 'band wife' (Samuel Scott) being struck down with sciatica and being reliant on string painkillers to function, touching on the fear of ageing in the process. Album closer 'Myth' was inspired by the writings of St. Isidore of Seville who in the 19th Century attempted to compile all human knowledge.

180 Gram Audiophile Pressed At RTI

    From The Original Master Tapes

Faithful Reproduction Of The Original Artwork

    Mono

Mike Condello did it all in four decades in the music business: serve as music director for two local Phoenix TV shows (Teen Beat and The Wallace & Ladmo Show), lead his own bands like Hub Cap and the Wheels, parody the Beatles with Commodore Condello's Salt River Navy Band, and even play with luminaries like Keith Moon, the Tubes, and Jackson Browne. In 1968, he also led his own band - which released the psychedelic masterwork Phase 1 on Scepter Records. Featuring a young Bill Spooner (pre-Tubes) on guitar, the album flows and trickles through your mind with more saturation than Lucy and her diamonds in the sky - picking up a few nuggets, boulders, and pebbles in the emergent violet haze. The phases of this pricey rarity - mastered from the original analog reels and pressed on lush 180 gram vinyl by RTI - are guaranteed to put your mind into a psychedelized headswirl trip that you'll want to take again and again.

    Infinite House

While on a writing retreat in the sleepy southern town of Benton, Mississippi, the members of New York's Ava Luna came across an abandoned house while on a walk through the woods. Overgrown, rotting, and littered with evidence of its past inhabitants, the maze-like dwelling would haunt their psyches throughout the writing and recording of their third full-length Infinite House. Like Borges' Library of Babel, the seemingly endless rooms and hallways in the old house felt like a metaphor for the invisible, internal labyrinths, which the band explores lyrically and sonically on their new album. Recorded by drummer Julian Fader and vocalist/guitar player Carlos Hernandez, and mixed by Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Spoon, MGMT), it is safely their most polished recording to date. But their trademark intensity, mirthful humor, and angularity remain resolutely in place, the burnished surfaces illuminating the stories beneath like never before. By questioning, or maybe just forgetting the rules of the real world, on Infinite House the band has grown beyond the nervous soul descriptor they've been tagged with in the past, delivering an album on which nightmarish moments can phoenix into revelations that help us reconnect with the surreal magic in our everyday lives.

    With Loving And Open Arms

THE CAUSEY WAY IS NOT A CULT. They wish they were, but they are not. Sure, they are building a compound in a remote and undisclosed place, outside of Gainsville, Florida.(oops) Sure they offer Causey Blood (vegan) in communion cups before their services. And, of course, concert goers are encouraged to fill out membership nametags at their concerts. And it goes without saying that they're more than merely terrified about Y2K. But they are not a cult. They can't be because Alternative Tentacles Records can't sign cults; they're supposed to sign bands.

Causey formed the band in 1997. His requisites were stringent in recruiting his flock. The future parishoners were not allowed to have been in a band - not in their current life nor in prior lives. They made one exception though, they allowed Boy Causey to join the band. Boy, aka Brian, you see, is currently in a ROCK N ROLL band called Man Or Astroman? as well as serving in Servotron. Causey, believe it or not, used to be a professional skateboarder using the phony last name Stanton. He used to defy gravity with corporate sponsorship emblazoned upon his bosom (in interviews he would explain it was the closest feeling approximating that of walking on water) when one day he landed on his nose and finally saw the light. This revelation changed Causey. He wanted to start anew, he suddenly felt a greater purpose. He needed to remain true to his new self while at the same time start something new & exciting and not merely regurgitate putrid bile like some old Linda Blair movie. He dreamed that his followers would release doves in asking for an encore, rather than lighting lighters. He had a mission, and the mission was THE CAUSEY WAY.

Shortly after this period Jello Causey received a care-package from THE CAUSEY WAY. It contained a digital testament of their musical sacrifices, and some thoughtful Y2K preparedness items such as generic bleach, generic toothpaste, and enough cotton swabs to clean out an entire chapel-full of ears. Shortly after receiving the package, he quickly filled out his membership nametag, and the rest is history. (Jello has adamantly denied journalists' claims that he was 'brainwashed'.) It was exactly the type of new 'testament' wave, and pulpit punk that was missing in his life. (Some heathen have made references to Devo due to the presence of keyboards.)

Jello wasn't the only soul converted. Rain Phoenix (sister of late River Phoenix) quickly signed up and did penance by singing background vocals on With Open and Loving Arms. One openly famous musical celebrity superstar, Michael Stipe of the rock quartet REM, was so healed upon experiencing THE CAUSEY WAY service, that he invited the pulpit back to his house for a serving of grits to show his gratitude. The band declined.

Prior to their debut full-length sermon With Open and Loving Arms, THE CAUSEY WAY released an ep by the name of WWCD (that rose to #30 on CMJ's charts) and released an ep called Testimony for the skankedly trendy label Fueled By Ramen.(Less Than Jake's label) before releasing their latest one Causey vs. Everything on Alternative Tentacles in January 2001.

    Kicking Against The Pricks

Besides being noteworthy as an astonishingly good all-covers album, Kicking Against the Pricks is notable for the arrival of a new key member for the Seeds, drummer Thomas Wydler. Besides being a fine percussionist, able to perform at both the explosive and restrained levels Cave requires, Wydler also allowed Harvey to concentrate on adding guitar and keyboards live as well as in the studio, a notable bonus. Race reappears briefly to add some guitar while former Birthday Party cohorts Rowland Howard and Tracy Pew guest as well, the latter on some of his last tracks before his untimely death. The selection of songs is quite impressive, ranging from old standards like Long Black Veil to everything from John Lee Hooker's I'm Gonna Kill That Woman and Gene Pitney's pop aria Something's Gotten Hold of My Heart. Matching the range of material, the Seeds are well on their way to becoming the rock/cabaret/blues showband of Cave's dreams, able to conjure up haunting, winsome atmospheres (Sleeping Annaleah) as much as higher-volume takes (Roy Orbison's Running Scared, the Velvet Underground's All Tomorrow's Parties). The version of Leadbelly's Black Betty is particularly grand, Harvey's drumming driving the track with ominous power. This said, often holding everything back is the key, as the creepout build of Hey Joe demonstrates. Even more striking is how Cave's own vocals rebut the charges that all he ever does is overdramatize everything he sings -- consider the husky, purring delivery on Johnny Cash's The Singer. Other winners include a masterful version of Jimmy Webb's By the Time I Get to Phoenix and the stately, album-closing The Carnival Is Over, originally a mid-'60s hit for the Seekers.

    Tigerlily

    Natalie Merchant Tigerlily On Numbered Limited-Edition 180g 45RPM 2LP

Half-Speed Mastered From The Original Master Tapes For Astounding Sonics And Detail

    Five-Times Platinum! 1995 Gem A Vocal Tour-De-Force

The 10,000 Maniacs were at their peak when group founder and scintillating vocalist Natalie Merchant announced that she was leaving the band to pursue a solo career. It took her four months to record Tigerlily, a gorgeously detailed folk-pop debut that became a permanent fixture on the album charts for a year after its 1995 release.

The five-times platinum set spawned three giant hits-"Wonder," "Carnival," and the haunting "Jealousy"-that simultaneously crossed over to the pop, adult-contemporary, and mainstream singles charts. It's easy to understand why. On Tigerlily, Merchant turns in a vocal performance for the ages, spinning majestic webs of mellow atmosphere woven with rhythmic textures and low-key movements. This is a mood masterpiece.

Remastered from the original analog tapes, Mobile Fidelity's collectable version of Tigerlily mines every last nuance and delicate tone from this intimate gem. Merchant's beautiful voice-her precious coos, soulful inflections, and whisper-soft purrs harken back to the Jazz Era-is presented with an up-close clarity and full-bodied richness that enhance the album's deeply emotional feel. She uses volume and pitch as a painter utilizes shades on a canvas. Subtle and tender, her phrasing and crescendos underscore the personal nature of the lyrics. Merchant sings about mature topics most songwriters lack the courage to explore, probing the painful loss of a longtime partner on "Beloved Wife," actor River Phoenix's tragic death on "River," and life-altering myths on "San Andreas Fault."

The vocalist's bracing conviction is matched by small-scale acoustic frameworks that don't let a note go to waste. And Mobile Fidelity's engineers worked to make sure you hear all of them. Aligned on a wide soundstage, the discerning mix of Hammond organs, pianos, chamber percussion, and bluesy guitars come across with their understated intentions intact. Balances are superb, dynamics are grand. There is no better way to experience and enjoy the rich sonic fabrics on this album. The results will leave you hypnotized.
