    Analogue Productions set out to produce the ultimate test record.


    We've consulted many experts in the field, including mastering engineers, audio experts, turntable experts and audiophile listeners, to create a test record that's never been made before. When Barry Wolifson from Sterling Sound in New York City called us with the same idea we had been thinking about - that being to create the ultimate test record - he and our audio expert Clark Williams began to brainstorm and research ideas until they were both completely satisfied with what should go on the record.


    Most of the test records in the past have been made to test a variety of equipment. This test record excludes silly cannon shots, typewriters, voices on one channel and other useless fluff. This one specifically addresses your turntable and cartridge. It's designed to provide the basic test signals necessary to calibrate a turntable or cutting lathe as simply as possible. Most of the signals have specific implications, but it is certainly possible to use them in any number of novel ways.


    This record was mastered and cut on a Neumann VMS 80 lathe at Sterling Sound and pressed at Record Technology, Inc. on high-quality, 180-gram virgin vinyl.


    Side 1

    General Reference Level

    This 1 kHz reference tone will allow you to establish a "base level" for all measurements.
    Track 1 1Khz reference tone 7cm/s Mono, in phase (Lateral)

    Basic reference for all measurements, adjust meter for maximum convenience (in the studio 0VU).
    Adjust preamp channel balance for equal output.
    Also used to check the offset angle of the photo cartridge; L&R signals should be exactly in phase as displayed on an oscilloscope.


    Azimuth Adjustment

    Track 2 1kHz reference level Left channel only

    Measure Right channel output.

    Track 3 1kHz reference level Right channel only

    Measure Left channel output.

    The object is to sit the stylus exactly perpendicular in the groove.

    Twist cartridge about its radial axis until the measurements from Track 2 and Track 3 are equal or very close to equal for both channels.


    High Frequency Adjustment

    Tracks 4, 5 and 6 are used to calibrate the RIAA high frequency equalizer of a phono preamp. This will be used to calibrate a mastering lathe's phono preamplifier or any phono preamplifier that has these adjustments.

    Track 4 1 kHz tone at -20 below reference level, Lateral

    Reference for High Frequency test.

    Track 5 10 kHz reference tone at -20dbu, Lateral
    Adjust the high frequency until the output level equals that of Track 4.

    Track 6 1 kHz to 20 kHz sweep at -20dbu, Mono (Lateral)

    The AC millivoltmeter reading should stay constant across all frequencies. There are a number of factors which can affect frequency response, including cable capacitance, cartridge loading, tracking force and worn parts. Because of this, it can be difficult to achieve perfectly flat frequency response. Sometimes by making small compromises in the 10 kHz adjustment, a better overall frequency response can be achieved.


    Low Frequency Adjustment

    Tracks 7 & 8 are used to calibrate the RIAA low frequency equalizer of a phono preamp.

    Track 7 1 kHz to 20 Hz sweep at 0 VU (Lateral)

    Play Track 7 and measure the output with your AC millivolt meter.

    Ideally, the output will be flat across all frequencies. When viewed on an oscilloscope, the amplitude would remain constant during the frequency downsweep.

    Track 8 100 Hz reference tone at 0 vu (Lateral)
    Adjust LF Eq to reference (which is your reading from Track 1).


    Track 9 VTA adjust

    This is an IEC intermodulation distortion (IMD) test signal; 60Hz & 4kHz 4:1 ratio.

    Using an IMD tester, adjust VTA by raising or lowering the tonearm for minimum distortion.


    Track 10 Standard Wow & Flutter test signal; 3150Hz
    The Wow & Flutter meter will give dynamic speed variations as a percentage deviation from nominal.

    Also, the frequency counter should read exactly 3150 Hz for nominal speed. You can use the Hz function on your multi-meter (if so equipped) to verify speed here as well. You can also use to find the measurements at 45RPM. The correct reading at 45RPM would be 4253 Hz (45/33.33) x 3150.


    Side 2

    Track 1 Anti-skating test; 315Hz amplitude sweep to +12dbu (Lateral)

    Signal should remain clean in both channels up to the highest level, both audibly and as viewed on an oscilloscope. In case of distortion, increase anti-skating force or decrease anti-skate until breakup occurs equally in both channels. The left channel information is inscribed on the inner groove wall, the right channel information, on the outer groove wall. Because of the offset angle of a pivoted tonearm, a constantly varying vector force biases the arm towards the center of the record causing the stylus to lose contact with the outer (i.e. right channel) groove wall. Both linear and modulated groove velocity, tracking force, stylus profile, and vinyl composition are contributing factors. The anti skating force attempts to ameliorate this by applying an opposing similar force.

    It is also accepted that the overall force vector increases as the tonearm approaches closer to the spindle or end of the record.


    Track 2 Pink noise lateral

    Used for cartridge "demagnetizing"

    You can also use this track to loosen up the cantilever's suspension to help break in a new cartridge. Play these tracks five to ten times after every 300 hours of normal LP playback.


    Track 4 1kHz @ reference level, vertical
    This out-of-phase signal should cancel to nothing when summed to mono.

    Any signals still present are distortion artifacts, lack of channel balance, or timing (phase) anomalies. This test can be a second confirmation of anti-skate adjustment.


    Track 5 1kHz to 10Hz sweep @ -20 below

    Resonance anomalies in the tonearm / cartridge interface will show up as amplitude peaks and dips as the frequency sweeps down.

    Once again, by listening in 'Mono' it is easier to hear the distortion artifacts.


    Track 6 Silent groove for bearing rumble and table isolation

    During playback of this track, nothing should be transmitted from the turntable to the speakers. Replay the track and gently tap on the rack or base that the turntable is resting on. There should be little or no thump transferred to the speakers. This track will help you experiment with turntable isolation methods and products to be able to get the most out of your playback system. You may want to use a closed or sealed headphone for best listening results, or a stethoscope on the plinth.

    All Soundsmith SG systems have user replaceable styli


    Our SG-210 features both +15dB single ended variable outputs and fixed outputs. The +15 dB variable outputs allow using the SG-210 directly with your power amplifier, eliminating the requirement for a line amplifier in a vinyl playback system. They may also be used to match levels with other line sources in a multi-source system. The fixed level outputs may be used for recording or sourcing into a second system, and are not affected by the volume control.


    The supplied SG cartridge comes with the SG-5 stylus assembly as standard, however, you may purchase the system with the SG-6 stylus for a surcharge of $100 at the time of ordering. Like all SG preamps, the SG-210 features an auto-mute circuit that protects your system and speakers from transients due to an accidentally dropped styli. The front panel defeatable auto-mute also allows quiet introductions to playing or recording your vinyl.


    All SG systems feature user replaceable styli, however, due to the nature of the cartridge design, styli are individually matched to each cartridge. If additional styli are desired, it is highly advisable to order them with your system order. The SG-210 is supplied in a black anodized case, however, custom wooden cases in black or mahogany are also available as accessory items.


    Soundsmith's SG cartridges are not magnetic cartridges, and do not require RIAA equalization - flat response is automatically produced by virtue of their being displacement measuring devices, as opposed to magnetic voltage generating velocity dependent devices. The cartridge works extremely well in all medium to high mass arms with standard 4 wire tone arm wiring. Due to the cartridge being non-inductive, it is far less sensitive to cabling in the tone arm and from the arm to the preamp when compared to any other cartridge design.

    SOLID PERFECT-SURFACE COPPER CONDUCTORS (PSC): Perfect-Surface Copper has an astonishingly smooth and pure surface. Proprietary metal-processing technology protects the wire's surface at every stage of drawing and fabrication. When high-purity low-oxide copper is kept as soft, pure and smooth as possible, it becomes a wonderfully low-distortion conductor. For over 30 years AudioQuest has pioneered the use of superior metals; yet even we were surprised by this huge leap in performance. PSC clearly outperforms previous AQ metals that cost over ten times as much. Electrical and magnetic interaction between strands in a conventional cable is the greatest source of distortion, often causing a somewhat dirty, harsh sound. Solid conductors are fundamental toward achieving Wildcat's very clean sound.


    FOAMED-POLYETHYLENE INSULATION: Any solid material adjacent to a conductor is actually part of an imperfect circuit. Wire insulation and circuit board materials all absorb energy (loss). Some of this energy is stored and then released as distortion. Wildcat uses air-filled Foamed-Polyethylene Insulation because air absorbs next to no energy and Polyethylene is low-loss and has a benign distortion profile. Thanks to all the air in Foamed-PE, it causes much less of the out-of-focus effect common to other materials.


    TERMINATIONS: Wildcat's gold-plated RCA plugs use a proprietary design that eliminates the distortion caused by the extra contact inside most plugs. Because the ground shells are stamped instead of machined, the metal can be chosen for low distortion instead of machinability. A combination of these major ingredients, and many more subtle details add up to explain how Wildcat can sound so clean, clear and dynamic.

All our cables are hand crafted, fully balanced, individually tested and terminated with top of the line Cardas Audio SRCA and the new Cardas XLR connectors. For those of you who prefer RCA locking connectors, we offer the Vampire LRCA-8 Locking connectors with spring loaded center pin.. The interior connections are resistance soldered and dampened in pure Teflon wrap.


    The silver and silver clad interconnects are terminated using WBT silver solder. As always, we back our cables with our 100% customer satisfaction guarantee. All Bob's interconnects feature a balanced type of architecture with internal conductors carrying the + and - signal with an additional braided conductive shield that is connected on one end only. This provides shielding effectively rejecting RF and EM interference without creating ground loops (say goodbye to hum).


    Three lines of cables are offered: cables with Solid Silver conductors, cables with Silver-clad copper conductors and our limited production vintage cables constructed with copper conductors.


    This Solid Silver custom terminated interconnect is Bob's top-of-the-line cable. It features a pair of pure silver 22 awg conductors and triple-shielding consisting of a silver plated OFC braided shield coupled to an Aluminum/Mylar shield and a Teflon PTFE shield. Covering the shield is a braided nylon sheath encased in a clear PVC outer jacket. Internally, this cable has 5 polyethylene air tubes separating and isolating the conductors.

    Bob's custom terminated silver-clad crystal copper interconnects feature a balanced design architecture using Polyethylene insulation and a pair of silver plated copper conductors (SP-OFC) that are insulated with Foamed Polyethylene, and wrapped together by a double screen shielding consisting of a tinned OFC braided shield coupled to an Aluminum/Mylar shield. This wire architecture is modeled from the wire Koetsu uses to wrap their Platinum magnets. We believe the results will thrill you with exhilarating highs, tight bass, and romantic mids - very much the Koetsu paradigm. These interconnects not only shine with tube equipment but do especially well with a solid-state phono stage and preamp.


    The silver clad copper wire uses the UP-OCCP (Ultra Pure - Ohno Continuous Casting Process) which is a continuous-casting method that was developed by Professor Ohno of the Chiba Institute in Japan.     To maintain a family resemblance with the lower powered amplifier, the EVOLUTION 100A is housed in a similar slim case with engraved front panel and solid metal control knobs as the EVOLUTION 50A. It is available with either a Black or Silver brushed aluminium front panel and uses the same ingenious soft push button design as the EVOLUTION 50 series, offering excellent tactile feel and backlit optical indication of functions, for optimum user-friendliness.


    The front panel features a large OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display. The white on black display provides higher clarity and resolution than a normal display and has a wide range of customised graphic symbols. Display brightness levels can be changed or turned-off, if not required, via the menu system.


    In addition to greatly increased performance, thanks to ingenious new circuit design, the EVOLUTION 100A has been equipped with 2 sets of high quality loudspeaker binding posts, with local and remote switching for A & B outputs. Optional extras include the ability to plug the Sequel mk2 Phono pre-amp inside and add the AMBIT FM/AM radio or RUBY DAC/Bluetooth/FM radio module to the expansion slot on the rear panel.


    At the heart of any high-end amplifier there must be a good power supply; The EVOLUTION 100A uses a massive 360 Watt, low profile, toroidal mains transformer, with multiple windings for high and low voltages and current, to separate the power amp, pre-amp and digital circuitry. Creek's long-standing design policy of paralleling several small capacitors in the power supply creates an ultra-high specification capacitor, with low inductance and ultra low impedance. This significantly improves filtering and helps produce a very powerful and accurate sound from such a relatively small amplifier.


    After testing several methods of building a high performance and high efficiency power amplifier, suitable for this new model, David Gamble - Creek Audio's Senior Engineer - created a unique Class G circuit especially for the EVOLUTION 100A. David chose to use four Sanken STD03 complimentary power Darlington transistors per channel, as used in the EVOLUTION 50A, which feature built-in thermal compensation. Compared to the EVOLUTION 50A, he improved the performance of the voltage gain circuitry, which, in combination with the output stage, now achieves extremely high open-loop gain and exceptionally low distortion, without sacrificing stability. The result is an exceptional power amplifier circuit with very low output impedance and high output current capability. This combination provides exceptional speed and control suitable for driving most loudspeakers.


    To increase the power output of the smaller EVOLUTION 50A, yet still retain the same case size, David Gamble developed a cunning Class G circuit which runs normally at a lower voltage for power levels up to 25 Watts into 8 Ohms. When required to produce more than 25 Watts, the amp automatically swings to a higher secondary voltage, to increase the output power capability to over 100 Watts into 8 Ohms.


    Statistically, average audio signals are mostly below half the maximum voltage swing available, which incidentally is only one quarter of the power. As the dissipation of lossy 'idle current' in a Class A/B amp (in the form of heat) is much lower for a 25 Watt amp than the potential 100 Watts in the EVOLUTION 100A, this solution dramatically improves the amplifier's thermal efficiency and helps to keep it slim and attractive.


    The Pre-amp circuit provides high levels of flexibility and control, via unbalanced or balanced inputs. It has multiple input options, switched either electronically or by gold contact relays. It also has a State-of-the-Art electronic Volume, Balance and Tone controls. Volume control and op-amp circuit outputs are all buffered with constant current sources, to provide improved load tolerance and stable distortion characteristics.


    Correct grounding is difficult, if not impossible, in an un-balanced amplifier, so Creek has provided the consumer with a balanced line input for both the pre-amp and power amp input. In addition, the optional RUBY DAC module also benefits from having a dedicated balanced audio connection to the EVOLUTION 100A's pre-amp, via its flat foil cable, to avoid potential ground loops inside the amplifier.


    It is a modern listening trend for headphones to now be fed from low voltage sources, such as smart-phones and portable music storage devices. This required the development of low impedance headphones, to draw the required current to make them loud enough to satisfy the consumer. This trend has also necessitated a re-think of circuitry used in modern Hi-Fi amplifiers, to drive such low impedance headphones, together with the traditional medium to high impedance versions also.


    Creek Audio has taken the unusual step of driving the headphone output socket of their EVOLUTION amplifiers from a dedicated low impedance source. Instead of the headphone output being sourced from the power amplifier, the headphone output is derived from a dedicated amplifier, with only a few Ohms in series for protection against short circuits. This dedicated HP amp is now located on the pre-amplifier circuit board.


    Creek Audio no longer makes a separate FM Tuner, but die-hard analogue tuner fans can continue to enjoy this valuable format by using the top-quality AMBIT plug-in tuner module, which augments the EVOLUTION 50A and 100A's capabilities. The AMBIT or RUBY modules are mounted on the back panel 'Smart-Slot', replacing Line Input 5. When the AMBIT is fitted, it automatically turns the amp into a Receiver, configurable for use in any region of the world. The OLED display shows all the tuner's functions and it's controlled by the left hand buttons and control knobs, as well as remote control.


    For vinyl fans, the EVOLUTION 100A can also be configured for Vinyl Disc input, using Line input 1. A SEQUEL 2 (40, 48 or 54) module can be plugged into a dedicated connector on the pre-amp PCB. It doesn't restrict the use of either the AMBIT or RUBY modules. Sequel 2 comes in three versions - 40dB MM, 48dB MC and 54dB MC.


    To simplify the many options a stylish system remote handset controls all the functions of the EVOLUTION 50 and 100 series. An optional IR extender to enable the products to be hidden away, but still operable via remote control.


    The EVOLUTION 100A is the most sophisticated and reasonably priced amplifier Creek has ever made. It provides stunning audio performance and is capable of out-performing other makes of amplifiers costing many times the price.

    Angling for an affordable yet world-class vacuum tube phono stage? The hunt is over! The spawn of the Manley Steelhead - one of the world's greatest phono preamplifiers - Stereophile Class A Recommended Component and The Absolute Sound's Preamp of the Year, has arrived.     Like the Steelhead, each channel employs the two triode sections of a 6922 for amplifying duties with highly accurate passive RIAA equalization networks. In the Chinook, the signal is then directly coupled to another 6922 dual triode serving as the output driver in a White Follower configuration. This output stage circuit is our favorite because of its super-low output impedance and beefy current-driving capabilities. It can drive long cable lengths and difficult loads, tube or solid-state.     Setting up the Chinook couldn't be easier. There are two internal settings for optimal gain: 45dB for Moving-Magnet cartridges and 60dB for Moving-Coil cartridges. Set it and forget it! The back panel contains DIP switches for adjusting the input resistive and capacitance loading values. 31 possible options between 26 and 800 Ohms plus 47k Ohms and 7 capacitive loading choices between 50 pF and 350 pF provide flexibility to match any cartridge and fine tune the tone.     We debuted to the world a killer frikkin' cool phono stage at CES 2001. It was called, aquatic naming theme continuing, The Steelhead®, as it is an upstream device and has a very clever MC variable load auto tranny that we designed and our very own Manley Magnetics department executed (which makes the MC stage so very clever). Iron=transformer=steel makes sense to me...


    It has two Moving Coil inputs with selectable impedance load 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 Ohms via Mr. Clever Steelhead transformer/autoformer. It also has variable and selectable Moving Magnet input impedances too 25, 50, 100, 200 Ohms and 47 kOhms. Very nifty is the selectable-dial-able-in-able-from-the-faceplate-able capacitive loading for all three of the MM & MC inputs 0 to 1100 picofarads in 10 picofarad steps. Very cool! Equalize baby! TEN picofard steps! Wow! Now you can really dial this in for perfect cartridge matching with ZERO penalty. None of this switching detracts from the sound quality or adds any extra anything to the signal path. Rest assured.


    It's got six tubes. 2 x 6922 plus 4 x 7044 or 5687. It's got a big honkin' volume control. It can drive an amplifier directly if you want, if you don't do digital. Hey and if you happen to have three turntables set up, we give you 2 x MC and 1 x MM selectable inputs! It's got variable and fixed volume outputs. And All-tube really low Z tube buffered outputs. Like inherently 20 Ohms plus the little 47 Ohm OK drive those high capacitance audiophile cables why doncha resistor, so it's real output impedance is only 67 Ohms. No wanky cathode follower (oh bor-ing) output here like the other guys. We got your real low impedance all-tube outputs right here! It will drive anything and everything. Long cables, no problem.


    It's got selectable gain 50, 55, 60, 65dB on a switch that even auto-mutes as you change it so no nasty bangs. Gain switch markings are referred to from the input of the 1st active electronics at 1 kHz to the fixed output @ 10k load, regardless of whether source is MM or XFMR stepped-up MC. It is not really practical to include MC step-up gain on the front panel markings due to the variable SOURCE impedances of the MC cartridges and the variable LOADING that the input XFMR will have on any given cartridge. All of this total MC gain variability should be confined to about 3 to 12 dB of range though. XFMR step-up gain plateaus as the load Z on a given MC cartridge is optimised...producing no VOLTAGE gain but in fact a bit more POWER gain... All this means you should set a load Z which sounds best with your particular MC cartridge and adjust gain to suit your system's operating level. Whatever you like. You will not blow anything up.


    (Bottom line: there is plenty of gain... enough to do justice to your fave lo-output MC cartridges).


    It's got a mute switch. It's got a just turn it down while I cue up so I don't throw my woofer cones across the room but I still want the same volume I was listening at before I flipped the side DIM switch. And what goes with DIM better than SUM which would be the MONO button... It has a killer hyper-regulated outboard power supply that plugs in on the huge-est connector you ever saw. And you can just hit the standby button to keep everybody off while you take a small holiday to Tahiti. A backlit MANLEY STEELHEAD illuminated badge reflects back to vinyl-days-of-yore while the millions of BLUE LEDs remind you that this is modern tube engineering design, baby!


    The VARIABLE Outputs are controlled by the precision film dual NOBLE® volume control. They are SMOOTH action these days as the fashion went against the detented ones.

    The input stages used in the this device can also be found in top notch mixing consoles or in well known professional microphone preamps. The entirely passive RIAA equalization network is realized with high precision foil capacitors to realize an artefact-free transport of microdynamics and room information. The switches for gain and load settings have gold plated connectors for reliable performance.


    A true audiophile phono stage

    The maximum gain of the Black Cube SE II is high enough for even very low output MC cartridges. Cartridge adaption itself is totally flexible because gain and lading can be chosen independently from each other. To top this all off, there is a slot for a custom impedance resistor, so that even the most exotic MC cartridges can be loaded adequately without having to buy expensive impedance plugs. No soldering needed.


    Because of the small outer dimensions, the Black Cube SE II audio section can be placed next to the turntable. This minimizes loss due to cable length.


    Lehmannaudio always pays special attention to details: the cable between power supply and audio section is shielded and ensures flexible placement of audio section and PWX power supply. The cases of both th power supply and the audio section are made of non-magnetic aluminum; additionally equipped with a top cover coated with a special anti-resonance treatment for better suppression of microphonic effects.


    A brand new feature that is built into the Black Cube SE II is the entirely passive bass filter, that is a great help when tayloring the lower corner frequency of the vinyl reproduction to personal needs. 16 different filter curves can be realized.

Bass coupling between the two linear gain stages is even realized with an MKP type. All resistors are of the low noise metal film variety. The switches for gain and load settings have gold plated contacts.

    Angling for an affordable yet world-class vacuum tube phono stage? The hunt is over!     Like the Steelhead, each channel employs the two triode sections of a 6922 for amplifying duties with highly accurate passive RIAA equalization networks. In the Chinook, the signal is then directly coupled to another 6922 dual triode serving as the output driver in a White Follower configuration. This output stage circuit is our favorite because of its super-low output impedance and beefy current-driving capabilities. It can drive long cable lengths and difficult loads, tube or solid-state. Bring it on. No wimpy cathode followers here!


    Setting up the Chinook couldn't be easier. There are two internal settings for optimal gain: 45dB for Moving-Magnet cartridges and 60dB for Moving-Coil cartridges. Set it and forget it! The back panel contains DIP switches for adjusting the input resistive and capacitance loading values. 31 possible options between 26 and 800 Ohms plus 47k Ohms and 7 capacitive loading choices between 50 pF and 350 pF provide flexibility to match any cartridge and fine tune the tone.
