    Piano Man (Awaiting Repress)

Billy Joels Piano Man established a legend via two elements that became a trademark of his career: simple, yet disarmingly effective lyrics that speak to universal truths and instilled feelings of pathos. With the classic title track, Joel captures the emotions and expectations all of usconsciously or notattach to our favorite musicians: Sing us a song you're the piano man/Sing us a song tonight/Well we're all in the mood for a melody/And you've got us feeling alright, he croons. Indeed, Joel has everyone feeling good on this breakout set.

Never before properly remastered, Mobile Fidelity secured the original master tapes to present this 1973 singer-songwriter masterwork in unparalleled fidelity. The cavity of Joels piano, tension of the strings, and reach of his voice are astounding on this numbered limited-edition LP pressing. The New York native finally seems as if hes playing in your room rather than down the hall.

After the commercial failure of his debut, and resulting legal disputes with his label, a determined Joel took up a six
month residency as a lounge singer in Los Angeles. The vocalist continued to pen songs, including his signature track, Piano Man, a fictional narrative motivated by the real-life stories and actions of the patrons he witnessed during his cocktail club residency. Joel also drew inspiration from a fellow peer with whom hed ultimately collaborate on a series of highly successful tours that continue to this day: Elton John. The Englishmans Tumbleweed Connection fueled a creative spurt in Joel, who extends the records Western imagery and bluesy themes.

Ignoring introspection in favor of rich character sketches, Joel utilizes his knack for melodic flair, filling out the songs with comprehensive arrangements and a swift sense of purpose. His talesThe Ballad of Billy the Kid, Captain Jack, Aint No Crimeare supported with phenomenal harmonies and thematic flavors that arrive courtesy of instrumental accents from first-rate players that include guitarist Larry Carlton, banjoist Fred Heilbrun, and drummer Ron Tutt. Joel supplies the requisite emotions, and Piano Man oozes with life.

Mobile Fidelitys 180g LP possesses a warmth that, until now, none of Joels records possess. Soundstaging, imaging, and immediacy are refined and mannered, and the enthusiasm and completeness of Joels craft come into supreme focus.

No fan of 70s rock or pop should be without this stellar pressing!

Billy Joel's first hit Piano Man from 1973 is about the fate of the lonely losers at a late night bar serenading a piano player. It struck a chord with audiences all over the world, and proved the start of a very fruitful career. It would turn into the ultimate sing-along for all, and is still one of his most beloved hits.

The eponymous album from 1973 showcases Joel's talent as a songwriter, and not only in his signature song. Numbers such as The Ballad Of Billy The Kid and Worst Comes To Worst have always remained fan favourites.

Piano In The Background (Speakers Corner)

Big band fans, take note! These nine numbers, in precisely this version, belong in every collection. We are talking about the year 1960, and the 17 musicians involved have probably performed this very repertoire every night in a different venue all over the globe. But in the studio it all sounds fresh and new, well practised but never dull, cool, groovy and intoxicating. The difference to a great number of other Ellington LPs is that here not a single wind soloist stands in the foreground but the whole body of musicians.

The arrangements are all new and some of them are even quite unusual, but Sam Woodyard on the drums has everything well under control - sometimes not at all 'Ellington-like'.
Snapping the fingers is automatic, and tapping your foot is also not to be frowned on; however this recording demands careful listening! If you have the first version of these numbers in your collection then it would be a good idea to compare them with this recording. The Duke Ellington Orchestra remains young, dynamic and varied thanks to a continually changing ensemble. And the 'Piano Man', as the best 'pause-filling' pianist ironically called himself, sat full of vigour before the 88 keys of the keyboard at the age of 60.

Not only jazz fans will be saying a big thank you that this recording - made in the early days of stereophony - is available once again on virgin vinyl with superb sound.

    Musicians:

    • Duke Ellington (piano)
    • Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Russell Procope (saxophone)
    • Ray Nance, Willie Cook (trumpet)
    • Lawrence Brown, 'Booty' Wood (trombone)
    • Aaron Bell (bass)
    • Sam Woodyard (drums)

Recording: May and June 1960 at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles

    Production: Henri Renaud

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Nancy Wilson, one of the most stylish and sultry singers in jazz. Here we have an exciting mix of influences from the music of Nat King Cole, the romanticism of Billy Eckstine, the emotional delivery of Dinah Washington and the genius of Little Jimmy Scott.

Nancy Wilson signed with Capitol Records in 1959, and recorded 37 albums over a period of 20 years, a period in which many of her album sales were second only to the Beatles, surpassing even Sinatra, Peggy Lee, the Beach Boys and Nat King Cole.

This exhilarating album features the legendary bassist Chuck Rainey on this previously hard to find gem of an album. Produced by David Cavanaugh and with musical arrangements from Jimmy Jones, Phil Wright and Joe Parnello. Of Jimmy Jones, Nancy Wilson says one of the greatest arrangers there ever was. Very sparse, nothing overdone.

    Musicians:

    • Nancy Wilson (vocal)

    • Jimmy Jones (piano, arranger, conductor)

    • Phil Wright, Joe Parnello (arranger, conductor)

    • Chuck Rainey (bass)

There'll be disappointment in store for those who expect to hear the voice of David Clayton-Thomas when listening to the present Blood, Sweat & Tears LP, Child Is Father To The Man. Experts will know however that on the group's very first album they will get to hear the excellent Al Kooper. The man is far more than a singer, for he not only plays the piano and various other keyboards but has also composed almost all the numbers and made the arrangements for the string ensemble. Bluesy pieces such as I Love You More and I Can't Quit Her and the vocals from Kooper are the real gems here. The amalgamation of pop, classic and jazz, which was made so popular in the Sixties by such groups as Chicago Transit Authority, Colosseum and Soft Machine, is here combined by Blood, Sweat & Tears with the acid-folk-rock mix emanating from San Francisco.

    Oh Man, Cover the Ground

    Limited Edition Of 1,000 Copies

Pressed On Custom Lake Blue Vinyl

Shana Cleveland is a rare artist who seems dismissive of time. Shes been performing with
a rotating batch of musicians tagged as The Sandcastles for years, and yet Oh Man,
Cover The Ground is their first proper album. It would be easy to chalk up the delay
behind the debut to a slacker lifestyle-Oh Man, Cover The Grounds laid-back vibe
certainly suggests an extremely casual approach to songcraft. But Cleveland is no slacker.
In the years since she first started playing out under her own name, shes helmed a
number of other music projects; most notably her revered Girls In The Garage-inspired
band La Luz. In her downtime, shes crafted a set of 37 trading cards dedicated to
obscure acoustic guitarists and a calendar of drawings depicting rock bands of
yesteryear. The glacial pace of Oh Man, Cover The Grounds development has little to do
with work ethic and everything to do with doing things in a way that feels right. "I don't
really think of it as a proper band," says Cleveland. "The line-up has been different for
almost every show depending on which arrangements I thought would be best for the
    atmosphere. Some shows I played alone; some with bass, clarinet, and backing vocals;
some with the addition of drums, cello and piano. We've played shows really selectively
throughout the last few years-just sticking to shows that I thought sounded really
interesting. Like, I'd rather play these songs for people in their bedrooms or in a field at
night than on a three band bill at a bar." In an industry fixated on striking while the iron
is hot, getting an artist in front of as many people in as short of a time as possible,
Clevelands insistence on atmosphere over arbitrary numbers is a bold move.

Oh Man, Cover The Grounds softly-stated melodies and breezy air operates on its own
sense of time. Though the songs still settle comfortably into three-minute parcels, their
gestation bucked at the convention of pop musics stringent time format. "I'm really into
meandering, fingerpicked open-tuned acoustic guitar, like John Fahey and Robbie
Basho," says Cleveland. "I started playing guitar in that style during a year right before I
moved to Seattle when I was lonely and bummed out in the San Fernando Valley and
found solace in spending long afternoons fingerpicking slow moving improvisations." This
casualness is evident in the music-you can hear it in the airy ambience of album opener
"Butter & Eggs", the gentle piano and strings accompaniment on the title track, the
particularly Fahey-esque explorations of "Itching Around" and "SPATM". But even the
timeline of the albums development seems to defy the ephemeral haste that permeates so
much contemporary music. The bulk of Oh Man, Cover The Ground was recorded in
Shanas basement. "I wanted it to sound casual and kind of loose like my favorite folk
albums, so we didn't practice much before recording and a few of the musicians were
playing the songs for the first time."

    Life Fantastic

Life Fantastic is the much anticipated follow-up album to Rabbit Habits (2008), an album which inspired Paste magazine to proclaim of the band, They are what rock n roll is meant to be and, frankly, what most rock bands have forgotten altogether: these songs are fun. Working for the first time with producer Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes), Man Man have brought along the fierce energy of their renowned live shows while finding a new melodic voice on songs like Oh, La Brea with its Harry Nilsson music hall touches, or Life Fantastic loping along to a classic David Bowie piano vamp. Expanding their palette while keeping the found instruments, Man Man continue to evolve into an entirely new form of propulsive pop music.

Musik Wie Von Einem Anderen Stern: Manger Test LP (Discontinued)

The Manger LP test consists of 15 tracks, many of which are already known to the audiophile crowd. For example, tracks 11 and 12 are by Chesky Records, the well known Livingston Taylor selections. Track 3 is a Beethoven's Piano Sonata (# 8, C-Dur, Op. 13) by Denon/Nippon Columbia. Still from the same label is track #4 (from Denon Professional Test CD): Beethoven Ich liebe dich, Hermann Prey. Then there's something from Philips, Klavier Records, Divox Jazz etc.

The quality of the chosen tracks is excellent, as one may expect from a test disc. The Manger LP test offers different kinds of music, from classical to jazz and light pop. Each track is meant to test a particular instrument or musical genre, so you have track no. 8 which is devoted to classical guitar (Capriccio Arabo), track no. 9 for double-bass, track 12 for an acapella choir and so on.

The last track of the disc is devoted to a percussion ensemble (The O-Zone Percussion Group), always very useful to test rise-time, decays and macrodynamics. This audiophile test LP is very interesting, reasonably priced and with a good selection of excellently recorded tracks.

    Storm Front

As another definitive installment in the Billy Joel 180 Gram Audiophile Series, Friday Music announces the release of his 1989 tour de force release Storm Front. Recorded with Foreigner's Mick Jones as producer, Joel's new direction proved him correct as the album sailed to the #1 spot on the charts and maintained massive radio play with five huge hit singles for the better part of two years! Featuring the #1 smash We Didn't Start The Fire, the rocker I Got To Extremes and the tender ballad And So It Goes, Storm Front was a pivotal release for the Piano Man, and continues to be one of the most beloved albums in his legendary catalog.

As is the case with Friday Music's other highly successful Billy Joel recordings, Storm Front was mastered impeccably from the original Epic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray at AcousTech, and pressed at RTI with Sony Music. This limited edition release also includes a very rare gatefold cover featuring all of the original artwork, plus a poly bag for the cover and a poly lined sleeve.

The pleasure is all ours in announcing a new Blue Series single from Charleston, SC's own Shovels & Rope. Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are definitely our favorite inter-gender rock n roll two piece since... well, you know (somewhere Alison Mosshart yells ''WTF?!'')... and we're certainly excited to present this Blue Series single featuring two covers of real life titans of the biz. Side A gives us Shovels & Rope's piano heavy take on Bruce Springsteen's ''Johnny 99'' while the flip is a slinky hip shaking version of Tom Waits' ''Bad As Me''. This is the perfect soundtrack for two doomed souls dancing in the glow of a jukebox in a greasy spoon diner... We reckon Messrs Springsteen and Waits should be mighty proud.

Joels Breakthrough Record Loaded With Smash Hits: Movin Out (Anthonys Song), Just the Way You Are, Only the Good Die Young, Shes Always a Woman

Getting It Right: Mobile Fidelitys Half-Speed Mastered Version Brings Phil Ramones Celebrated Production into Full-Color Detail

1977 Set a Grammy Winner for Record of the Year and Song of the Year

Billy Joel entered 1977 with a great track record but in need of breakthrough. Pairing with producer Phil Ramone (Carly Simon, Simon & Garfunkel), who developed the requisite ingredients missing from Joels formula, the singer-songwriter became a household name and chart-topping success courtesy of The Stranger. Certified ten-times platinum, Joels artistic and commercial smash remains a pop-rock benchmark. Better still, it now sounds astonishing.

An integral part of Mobile Fidelitys Billy Joel catalog restoration series, The Stranger is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LP at RTI. Far superior to the previous Sony and Simply Vinyl analog reissues, this edition emphasizes the crucial touches and insightful techniques Ramone brought to a batch of material that ranks among Joels most clever, catchy, and sagacious.

Whereas a handful of Joels preceding efforts feature a near-flawless mix of melodic arrangements and poignant lyrics, the aspects he sought in order to graduate into a more serious artist arrive here via Ramones more muscular, fleshed-out, and rock-enabling production. The streamlined approach slightly strips back the sweeping developments heard on Piano Man and Turnstiles, and on this edition, lays bare the core of the material, allowing the vocalists bittersweet yearning, rollicking 88 notes, and working-class conviction to emanate with full-bodied detail, vivid color, and grand-scale dynamics.

A Grammy winner for both Record and Song of the Year, Just the Way You Are epitomizes Joels balladic reach, his ability to transfer wistful sentiments and lovelorn emotions. He also flashes a mean streak. The animated Only the Good Die Young bounces and hops to an updated classic-R&B rhythm and, underneath its beauty, Shes Always A Woman hints at trouble underfoot. And then theres the New York-centric, character-rich poetry of the vignettes.

Akin to many of his influences, Joel nails the grit, personality, specificity, descriptiveness, and behavior of protagonists that populate Movin Out (Anthonys Song) and Scenes From an Italian Diner, each equally at home on The Stranger as well as on a Broadway play or on a golden-era Hollywood film soundtrack. No wonder that, just months after its original release, Joel was no longer a stranger to any of the music-loving public. He would never look back.

Don't pass up this seminal pop-rock work in the best fidelity its ever enjoyed.

Originally Released Via Guinn Records In 1977 (500 Copies)

The 1977 psychedelic rarity Michael Angelo (aka The Guinn
Album), by Kansas City, MO-based singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist
Michael Angelo Nigro, is a staggering, hookfilled,
hi-fi snapshot of one man's inner space via dreamy
    folk-rock, Anglophile-pop and light psychedelia.

Filled with poetic, contemplative, imaginative and arresting
lyrical imagery and a Beatle-esque vocal presence that
etches lovely figures, there's little to ally the album to its
time. Michael Angelo taps into the forever, ruminating on
timeless life concerns in an oblique and direct manner.
Ethereal and mellifluous, the album isn't just a collection of
songs, but a cohesive album-length statement with strummy,
jangly folk-rock guitar, incendiary lead lines, big, resonant
piano chords and plaintive tinkling, aided by keyboard
coloring, and stands as a heavy-hitter in the pantheon of
"out-of-time" treasures. Coming to form in local professional
studios where he worked as a mid-to-late '70s session man,
Michael plays all instruments on the album (spare drums,
    handled by Frank Gautieri).

Original copies of this obscurity have long traded for close to
four figures. The more affordable versions previously
available have been shoddy bootlegs with poor sound. While
the original master tapes vanished decades ago, this edition
has been treated to a new re-master from a sealed original
mint copy - and with Michael's full involvement and
blessing - rendering it as near the sound of the original LP
as possible. We can now all drift within a sea of dreams with
    Michael Angelo.

    Songs In The Attic

Songs In the Attic on Numbered Limited Edition 180 Gram LP from Mobile Fidelity

1981 Live Album Finds Joel Adding Warmth to Ballads, Punch and Kick to Rockers

Taking You to the Stage: Mobile Fidelity Version Pulls Gives You a Dead-Center Seat and Wonderful Sonic Perspective

Ideal Summation of Joel's Early Period Material, Enhanced by Accomplished Band in Concert Setting

Great live albums often function as documents of a performer's stinting onstage abilities, stopgaps between studio albums, introductions to a musician's earlier work, and/or opportunities for familiar material to be showcased in superior ways. Songs In the Attic serves all of these purposes and more. As Billy Joel's first live album, it's still his best, punctuated by dynamic renditions of favorites and deep cuts, and augmented by a tested band in sync with the pianist.

A vital component of Mobile Fidelity's Billy Joel catalog restoration series, Songs In the Attic is mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180 gram LP at RTI. The resulting presentation effortlessly outshines that heard on all previous editions of this 1981 set. Joel's piano possesses fuller body and lifelike resonance. His veteran group's contributions emerge with newfound clarity, dynamics, decay, and extension. Balances are supreme, and shades and colors blend, amplifying richness and presence.

On the heels of three multi-platinum albums and a commercial breakthrough, Joel released Songs In the Attic to both tide fans over until 1982's The Nylon Curtain as well to feature material in a looser, warmer setting. The record highlights not only the singer's consistency and knack for indelible melodies, but savvy live techniques. Upbeat tunes such as "Everybody Loves You Now" receive a more fleshed-out treatment that yields added punch and swagger, while balladic numbers like "I've Loved These Days" take on a cozy warmth akin to the feeling of putting on a sweater on a cool fall day.

Songs In the Attic also bridged the gap for listeners for whom Joel was then a new entity, as many didn't come to his music until The Stranger. Hence, tracks like "Captain Jack" and "The Ballad of Billy the Kid," from Piano Man, get a fresh identity, particularly courtesy of a backing band that, by then, had been gigging with Joel for years. No wonder that, unlike a majority of live records, Songs In the Attic yielded two Top 40 pop hits: "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" and "She's Got a Way." No matter from what angle it's viewed, the set stands as one of the most important and enjoyable live records ever released.

    One From The Heart

    Numbered, Limited Edition

Tom Waits and Crystal Gale Create Magic Together on Waits' Most Accessible Outing

Small Combo Band Provides Jazzy and Bluesy Support

Stupendous Sonics: Music Largely Recorded Live on Studio Floor

One From the Heart ranks among the best soundtracks in history. Essential for any Tom Waits or Crystal Gayle devotee, it sets an example of what's not only possible, but should be expected and demanded, when two likeminded artists collaborate. Heartstrings are tugged, passions kindled and lost, sentiments exchanged, skeletons dragged out of closets, seasons changed, romantic truisms cited. And its wide-open sound is supreme, the result of most tracks being recorded live in the studio, free of after-effects and interference.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g LP presents the Academy Award-nominated One From the Heart in stunning sonic relief. You'll be able to gauge the signature tones of the guitars and hear inside the cavity of Waits' piano. Perhaps most importantly, Gayle and Waits' voices now sound just feet away, with your room converted into the world's coolest late-night lounge. Spatial cues, background accents, and studio dimensions emerge with striking realism.

Inspired by a track Waits cut with Bette Midler on his Foreign Affairs effort, One From the Heart overflows with simpatico chemistry, poignant contrast, elegant atmospherics, and awestruck intimacy. On their four vocal duets, Gayle and Waits inhabit the personas of a man and woman breaking apart yet sharing common bonds. Their singing plumbs emotional depths that traverse melancholy, sensuality, and understanding. Made before Waits' baritone turned into a deep, gravel-laden instrument, the songs are more smoke than whiskey, more piano-man empathy than hipster growler.

Written by Waits, the music occupies a common ground between laidback small-combo jazz, lounge pop, and downbeat blues. Classy string orchestrations abet a crack ensemble comprised of saxophonist Terry Edwards, drummer Shelly Manne, pianist Pete Jolly, bassist Greg Cohen, and others. The arrangements seamlessly melt into both vocalists' leads, allowing every note-every piano clink, acoustic bass ripple, brushed snare drum-to register with utmost magnitude.

Experienced on stunning soliloquy pieces such as Gayle's mournful ballad "Is There Any Way Out of This Dream?" and back-and-forth collaborative efforts like the breakup take "Picking Up After You," beautiful instrumentation, spacious production, and flawless vocal phrasing take hold. You can picture the broken dreams exiting out the side doors of the dim bars and abandoned houses that pepper the narratives. Renowned for his sad songs, Waits has never been in better form, the goodbye fare clicking with unflinching honesty and personality.

    Salt

For an LP likely to be placed in the R&B aisle, Shy Girls' debut album Salt is noticeably impressionistic. At times it bears the painterly, frank essence of a Blue/Court and Spark Joni Mitchell. At others, it strides toward the progressive and cinematic. There is a striking viscerality in the crashing percussion and detuned piano of "I Am Only A Man" and in the hypnotic woodwind outro of "What If I Can." The mournful guitar dressing "Watercolor Dreams" seems to nod to Ennio Morricone -- like a future-Western ballad. And even in the stark songs that bookend the album, Vidmar delivers swelling sentiment fit for the screen.
