    Playing The Angel

From the beginning of their career Depeche Mode have been at the forefront of remix culture; creating their own classic extended mixes back in the early 80s and over the years amassing a collection of remixers of their songs that pretty much charts the history of cutting edge dance music.

When Ultra was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have forgotten about Songs of Faith and Devotion. When Exciter was declared the best Depeche Mode album since Violator, those who said so must have also forgotten about Songs of Faith and Devotion, in addition to having found a roundabout way of saying that it was merely better than Ultra. There's no doubt this time: Playing the Angel is both the band's best album since Violator and, more significantly, an album that is near Violator in stature. The biggest clue dropped by the band prior to its release was a quote from Dave Gahan, who said that being in Depeche Mode is better than it has been in 15 years. Some quick math reveals that Gahan was hinting at the Violator era, a time when the band's creativity and popularity peaked synchronously. It also turns out that this is a time as good as any other to be paying attention to the band. Playing the Angel lacks Songs of Faith and Devotion's end-to-end chest-beating, Ultra's grinding murk, and Exciter's desiccated patches. It takes the best qualities from those releases, combines them with a few subtle allusions to Violator -- tiptoeing the border that separates retread from reinvention -- and makes for a highly concentrated set of songs that all but demand to be heard in one uninterrupted shot. Gahan, still riding the confidence he gained as a songwriter from Paper Monsters, his 2003 solo debut, contributes three songs co-written with band associates Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott. Though none of them vie to be the album's centerpiece, it's apparent that the move wasn't a concession of desperation on anyone's part. The friendly competition seems to have kicked chief songwriter Martin Gore into high gear; he's in top form. Musically, a lot of analog gear was used, and it's apparent that the arrangements and extra sounds were less fussed over than they have been in the recent past. You get the sense that everything fell into place, as opposed to being forced or aimlessly manipulated. Despite the favoring of older gear, there's no other year in which any of the songs could've been made. Like the best Depeche Mode, almost everything on the album will make an initial wowing impact while remaining layered enough in subtle details to surprise and thrill with repeated listens. It is not the kind of album a 25-year-old band is supposed to make.

Library Catalog Music Series Volume 8: Music For Dreaming And Playing

Kristin Miltner is a composer, video and installation artist and sound designer from Oakland, CA. She performs with custom software, designed to scan sound files and live input, allowing her to instantly restructure and sequence these sounds. Imagine a giant octopus in an infinitely long hallway with windows on each side. It runs up and down, opening and closing windows to let in a bit of water here and there, never stopping. There is a rhythm. The ocean is the sound source, the hallway and octopus are scanners, the windows are the input device, and the octopus's rhythm is the sequencer

Kristin Miltner, composer, programmer, musician, and videographer -- and one half of the duo Miba -- is responsible for Music for Dreaming and Playing, the eighth volume in Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music Series. Miltner's brand of electronic music, while gentle, usually quiet, and inviting, is performed via a software system of her own design that scans sound files and live input, thus allowing her to instantly restructure sounds into sequenced units of varying lengths and musical groupings. This is done while creating a rhythmic component comprising a seemingly endless series of sonic textures, spaces, and ambiences. She also often employs her singing voice, broken into single syllables and nonsensical utterances (as on the opener Melody from Dream) to deepen the proceedings. These pieces are easy to listen to because of the considerable restraint that goes into their presentation. Miltner's soundworlds are ambitious; they change quickly but seamlessly, moving from idea to idea with alacrity and an expert sense of control. The remarkable thing is that it's all live, on-the-spot recording. Clocking it at just under 40 minutes, Music for Dreaming and Playing comes across as a series of electronic songs, more than it does soundscapes. Their rhythmic components aside, there are melodies at work inside these (mostly) brief pieces -- check Altamont Pass, Space Shooter: Boy Avatar, Space Shooter: Girl Avatar, and the closer, Firefly's Flight Game Music. The element of surprise inherent in each track still leaves something lyrically retentive in the listener's ear. Music for Dreaming and Playing is one of the most successful volumes the Library Catalog Sound Series thus far. ~ Thom Jurek

In The Red is proud to announce the release of the new full-length from San Francisco's Fresh & Onlys, Play It Strange. After two albums (on Castle Face and Woodsist, respectively) and too many singles and EPs to count, The Fresh & Onlys deliver their most solid outing yet. Recorded by studio whiz Tim Green during an eight-day session, Play It Strange marks the band's first recording in an actual recording studio. On 2 analog tape! The results are nothing short of incredible. For those unfamiliar with The Fresh & Onlys, their sound draws from jangly psychedelia, Morricone-style Western twang, dark vibes a la Bad Seeds/Gun Club, melodic '60s sunshine pop and a hint of garage rock swagger.

Don't Play That Song is the third studio album by Ben E. King. The album was released in 1962 and was home to five notable singles: Stand by Me, Ecstasy, First Taste of Love, Here Comes The Night and the title track, Don't Play That Song. Ecstasy, Here Comes The Night, First Taste of Love, and Young Boy Blues, were all in the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in 1961/1962.

This album, like its predecessors, dates from a period in which producers and engineers were figuring out what one could do with Soul and R&B in terms of engineering, and the sound separation and textures are nothing if not vibrant and alluring in their own right, separate from the music.

    Cosmic Mind At Play

The Paisleys were formed in Minneapolis, and their sole album was produced by Warren Kendrick, who produced a bunch of other garage rock and psychedelic recordings in Minneapolis in the mid-'60s to early '70s (most notably for the Litter). The Paisleys actually helped Kendrick build the studio in which Cosmic Mind at Play was recorded, and only a couple of thousand copies were pressed when it was released in 1970. -- Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide

    A Passion Play

    Original Album Remastered

'A Passion Play' is the sixth studio album by Jethro Tull, released in 1973. Like its predecessor, Thick as a Brick (1972), it is a concept album the theme being the spiritual journey of one man in the afterlife.

On release it had chart success around the world hitting no. 1 in the US & no. 13 in the UK.

Early in 1968, a group of young British musicians, born from the ashes of various failed regional bands gathered together in hunger, destitution and modest optimism in Luton, North of London. With a common love of Blues and an appreciation, between them, of various other music forms, they started to win over a small but enthusiastic audience in the various pubs and clubs of Southern England. The breakthrough came when they were offered the Thursday night residency at London's famous Marquee Club in Wardour Street, Soho.

    Let The Record Play

We can come together, we won't give up on the fight, sings Nashville's Moon Taxi on their smash single Two High, a song that catapulted them to the top of the streaming charts and the forefront of the national stage. Filled with emotive vocals, a percussive beat and some unexpected, infectious horns, it's a track that shows the band - which has been together for over a decade - venturing into more adventuresome territory than ever. Fearlessly melding rock with pop hooks, clever synths and roots touchstones gleaned from their home in Music City, Moon Taxi's forthcoming fifth record and first for RCA will find the five-piece doing what they do best: coming together and fighting for music that triumphs above all.

Two High, the band's newest single, has been taking Moon Taxi - Trevor Terndrup (vocals, guitarist), Spencer Thomson (lead guitarist and producer), Wes Bailey (keyboardist), Tommy Putnam (bassist) and Tyler Ritter (drummer) - to new heights, topping over 60 million streams on Spotify and making heavy rotation on SiriusXM. Written in response to the push for peace, but not reacting to the politics, of the Women's March this past January, it's a song that encourages listeners to keep looking for a positive way forward - from their own internal battles, to the ones suffered by the world at large.

It's perhaps due to Moon Taxi's inspired, inclusive worldview when it comes to their music that they've been able to have songs featured as the soundtrack to multiple commercial and TV placements - from BMW, Nashville, MLB, NFL to HBO Sports - but it's their infectious live performances that keep fans coming back night after night. Touring for the better part of the decade, they're the kind of band that inspires a loyal following willing to drive miles and miles (or fly many more) to catch them again and again.

I'll Play The Blues For You

The regal twang and moan of Albert Kings guitar has long been one of the most riveting sounds in urban blues.

If King hadnt developed his way of bending notes into uncannily human cries, shouts and whispers, modern blues guitar would be a different phenomenon. King played his right-handed guitar upside down and backward, using his left hand. But there was nothing backward about the music he made. Literally pulling emotion from the strings, he created resonance and a sustained wail that distinguished him from all other blues guitarists.

In Ill Play The Blues For You, one of the prime albums of Kings Stax period, we hear a thrilling live performance of his classic Ill Be Doggone and a hair-raising Dont Burn Down The Bridge. Throughout, the warm ruggedness of the masters singing complements his guitar.

Common Ground: Dave Alvin + Phil Alvin Play and Sing The Songs of Big Bill Broonzy

We argue sometimes, but we never argue about Big Bill Broonzy, says Dave Alvin when explaining why he and brother Phil, who havent made an album together in almost 30 years, were inspired to record Common Ground: Dave Alvin + Phil Alvin Play and Sing the Songs of Big Bill Broonzy set for June 3 release on Yep Roc. The Alvin brothers, who founded seminal early LA punk roots band The Blasters in 1979, have shared a fascination with Broonzy since childhood. After an illness nearly took Phils life in 2012, they resolved to return to the studio and pay tribute to the blues legend. Common Ground includes 12 songs that capture a 30-year cross section of Broonzys canon, performed by the Alvins in their signature style of rollicking roots and stomping country blues.
