    Pinned

A couple of years ago, A Place to Bury Strangers were in search of a new
drummer. Lia Simone Braswell, an L.A. native, had recently moved to
New York, and was playing drums in shows around Brooklyn "just to keep
her chops up." As it turned out, APTBS bassist Dion Lunadon caught one
of those shows and, after seeing her play, was moved to ask her if she'd
want to come to a band practice sometime.

For well over a decade now, A Place to Bury Strangers-Lunadon, founding
guitarist/singer Oliver Ackermann, and, officially, Lia Braswell-have
become well known for their unwavering commitment to unpredictable,
often bewildering live shows, and total, some might say dangerous
    volume.

This April marks the release of Pinned, their fifth full-length and an album
that finds them converting difficult moments into some of their most
urgent work to date. It's their first since the 2016 election, and their first
since the 2014 closing of Death By Audio, the beloved Brooklyn DIY space
where Ackermann lived, worked, and created with complete freedom.

There are searing meditations on truth and government-led conspiracies
("Execution"), as well as haunting, harmonized responses to the tensions
of our current political climate ("There's Only One of Us"). It all opens
with "Never Coming Back," a frightening crescendo of group vocals,
vertiginous guitar work, and Lunadon's unrelenting bass. It's a clear and
honest statement of intent, not just for everything that follows, but for
    this band as a whole.

    Pins And Panzers

Plushgun is the brainchild of Daniel Ingala and grew out of the cramped confines of his overpriced and undersized bedroom in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. After creating the song Just Impolite and posting it to his MySpace page, the project quickly took off with songs featured in the web-TV series We Need Girlfriends. When he was ready to start playing live shows, Ingala recruited his friends Taylor Armstrong and Matt Bogdanow. Plushgun released their self-titled debut EP this past August, and are now pleased to share their upcoming full-length, Pins and Panzers. As soon as you put it on the stereo, you know youre going to have a good time as the pumping synth lines are a perfect foil to Daniel Ingalas sensitive wordsmith tendencies that work to create addictive indie-pop with a bittersweet edge.

    Document & Eyewitness 1979-1980

For those unfamiliar with Document and Eyewitness, it really doesn't do it justice to describe it simply as a collection of live recordings from three turn-of-the-80s Wire gigs. What makes it more than that is the unorthodox nature of the main performance and the way it was presented on record. The centrepiece of the original vinyl release was a recording of the final gig of Wire's 70s phase. Wire's set was composed of largely new (and often under-rehearsed) work, accompanied by a series of artistic actions and interventions.

The evening was memorable for the unusually hostile reaction from sections of the audience, which has perhaps elevated it beyond a simple passing moment. If the crowd was expecting a standard gig, the level of outrage, expressed in vociferous abuse suggested that the band's intentions were lost on those in attendance, who were instead confounded by the apparent artistic pretensions on display. The approach was to couple selected live tracks with a spoken commentary on the proceedings by long-term Wire fans Adrian Garston and Russell Mills. Hence the title, Document and Eyewitness. For the album, the Electric Ballroom material was supplemented with recordings from a July 1979 show at the Notre Dame Hall (a straightforward band performance), along with one track from a 1979 gig in Montreux.

    Wire

Their 13th studio album - simply titled Wire, - comprises material that was written with the album in mind, but toured extensively first, as well as songs that Newman introduced to the group in the studio just prior to recording. The idea was to get the most spontaneous reaction possible from the musicians, and far from the rough and ready results one might expect from such a tack, Wire is full of swooning pop melo-dies with a 60s tinge and an irresistible, near motorik rhythmic momentum. One can recognise certain me-lodic inflections, guitar and bass motifs, and drum rhythms from Wire's idiosyncratic vocabulary but it has a remarkable freshness. The basic tracks were recorded at Rockfield Studios with overdubs added at Brighton Electric. The 11 tracks selected for release were the ones that came together most naturally. From the outset Wire was an alliance between four very different characters and continues today with the addition, in 2012, of It Hugs Back guitarist Matthew Simms, who is around thirty years younger than the other group members. "With Matt there was a really new dynamic that had appeared in the group's sound and that was something we wanted to capture, utilise and be creative with," says Lewis. Wire is the first album where Simms has been involved in formulating the material from the ground up, but when the group's particular chemistry starts working he is now very much part of the process.

San Franciscos Pins of Light reside in that murky musical shadow-territory of the nearly unclassifiable. They craft a brutal and intricate mÉlange of metal, punk and prog that isnt quite any of those things. Pins of Lights most progressive moments are more Motörhead than Mothers of Invention; their metal is more Pink Floyd than it is Judas Priest; the elements of punk are a driving fistfight thats entirely the bands own. Singer and bassist Shane Baker, guitarists Jake Palladino and Ravi Durbeej, and drummer Phil Becker come previously (and currently) from such SF institutions as Dead and Gone, Night After Night, Hightower and Triclops (among a slew of others). The groups debut album II was recorded by Kurt Schlegel (Jello Biafra, Melvins, I Am Spoonbender) and Phil Manley (TransAm, The Fucking Champs) at Lucky Cat Recording and mixed by Becker in the bands hometown.

Over the past few years, Berkeley-based songwriter/producer Dan Casey (better known as Yalls) has issued everything from sun-kissed synth-pop to quirky hip-hop instrumentals, glitched excursions of post-aughts soul, to tropical-tinged, vocal-led boom-bap. He has regularly delivered immersive one-offs, inventive remixes, and guitar based works under his own name, Casey has built a reputation as a producer who may be hard to pin down in exact terms, but is always reliable for delivering delicious hooks and poignant melodies. Unite, the first proper full-length album by Yalls, is a cohesive amalgamation of the sound Casey has been exploring. It combines elements of mid-60's funk, modern experimental beatmaking, and pop music - firmly placing the listener in a unique space somewhere between defunct dance halls and outer space.

"Idehen is a great encapsulation of many facets of England's long standing, and constantly evolving, MC
    tradition." - FACT Magazine

"Collaborating extensively, the subtle spiritual nuances of Pále's production are brought out into the light
by Joshua Idehen's carefully wrought verbs and nouns"- Clash

"One of many emerging talents from Manchester, Pàle is making smooth, atmospheric jams that border
the broken realms of hip-hop, house and garage."- Hyponik

High Lucia (formerly known as Pále) presents Wash, his debut record for Lex. Predominantly instrumental,
Wash is a lush 6 track ep with sweeping ambient instrumentals underpinned by minimalistic bass lines
alongside Joshua and Shanaz's vocals contributions which pin point the London influence. His productions
don't just stir morose vibes, instead they engage in creating an abstract sense of beauty. His synths and vocal parts cling like fog to his crisp percussion. A young talent growing from strength to strength.

    Mystery White Boy (Pre-Order)

Mystery White Boy, culled from Jeff Buckley's eight-month world tour of the same name, is not just another live album blighted by whoops and catcalls. Such was the reverence granted the ill-starred singer-songwriter's electrifying confessionals that hardly a whimper issues from the audience in 78 minutes--not, at least, until each gargantuan heart-and-soul epic ends. Buckley treated music like it was Shakespearean tragedy, and that grandiosity makes the live Grace and Mojo Pin at least the equal of their recorded counterparts. The gems, though, are the cover versions found here--especially a closing nine-minute rendition of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah that lurches into a whispered chorus of the Smiths' I Know It's Over. Ultimately, this posthumous collection is utterly captivating. --Louis Pattison

Cribbing as much from Brian Wilson's lyrical topics as they take

    - Noisey / Vic

[The music of the Tijuana Panthers] sounds something like they had
spent an afternoon with Jan and Dean sharing fish tacos with Quentin Tarantino, before laying down some 4-track recordings with The
    Cramps in a sunlit garage."
    - LA Weekly

the polished punx in vintage pop-snarlers like the Only Ones, the
    Real Kids, or Generation X."
    -Spin

Live and on record, the Tijuana Panthers are a great band. You
could say garage, punk or surf while describing their sound, but
they're harder to pin than that. The truth is that they write classic
songs that don't depend on tropes from any genre. They craft perfect
pop and deliver it with energy and immediacy. However, the real
magic of this band is in their weirdness.

Behind their picturesque portraits of daily life is an aching despair.
This subtle contrast creates an eerie tension between the ideal, the
real and the surreal. You suddenly realize they're not the happy-golucky beach boys you tried to pin them as, but more akin to sexually
frustrated soda jerks in a David Lynch film. And this all makes sense
with the fact that they come from Southern California's shadier city
of Long Beach, not exactly the fun in the sun that California dreamers might expect.

For Wayne Interest, the Panthers team up with producer Richard
Swift. The recordings took place at Swift's studio in Oregon where
the band decidedly took risks in performance and production. The
risks paid off. With Swift's direction and upgrade in fidelity, Wayne
Interest sounds just as compelling in headphones as it would at a
house party in East LA. It also gives the listener a closer look at the
idiosyncrasies of the Tijuana Panthers, only making it clearer that
there's something off about these creeps. Their weirdness, or boldness to be whoever they may be, is what makes this band great. It's
a rare quality. The more you listen to the Tijuana Panthers the more
    you wonder about them.

On his third release of a most prolific year, Ryan Adams takes a break from his band, the Cardinals, to fashion an introspective song cycle with stripped-down arrangements focused on acoustic guitar or solo piano. After the propulsive, self-mythologizing title track opens the album in brazen fashion, forging an unlikely bond of comparison between John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band and the early '70s Grateful Dead, much of the rest of 29 finds Adams at his dreamiest (the reveries of Strawberry Wine and Elizabeth, You Were Born to Play That Part) and most rapturously romantic (the aching falsetto on the lovesick Starlite Diner). He continues to take chances and not all of them pay off, with the underwatery echo of Night Birds and the over-the-top dramatics of The Sadness showing the downside of self-indulgence, though Carolina Rain suggests he can return to the alt-country prime of Whiskeytown whenever the mood strikes. With the intimacy of the closing Voices, Ryan Adams sounds less like he is singing a song than sharing a secret. Refusing to rein himself in or pin himself down, he sings on the title track, You can't hang on to something that won't stop moving.

    Over There That Way

Heliotropes combine sludgy metal guitar tones, introspective shoegaze
interludes, psychedelic drone, and atmospheric harmonies to create a sound
that's as equally hard to pin down as it is alluring, earning them the title of
Village Voice's Best Garage Band Of 2014.

Heliotropes is comprised of founding member/songwriter/vocalist Jessica
Numsuwankijkul, along with a rotating cast of collaborators, including
drummer Cici Harrison, bassist Richard Thomas, and guitarist Ricci Swift,
who are all featured on the band's upcoming album.

The band's first recorded offering came with 2012's Ribbons 7", followed the
next year by their debut LP entitled A Constant Sea, which was named by
Mother Jones as one of the 10 Best Albums Of 2013. Since then, the band
has performed on the road with Esben And The Witch and toured nationally
with stops at South By Southwest, Firefly and Culture Collide, sharing the
stage with a far-reaching variety of bands including Thurston Moore, The
Geto Boys, Matt and Kim, Kurt Vile, Parquet Courts, The Black Angels and
    The Raveonettes.

    Under Color Of Official Right

There's a humanness and empathy to this material that's increasingly rare in rock songs.- Pitchfork

Their road is straight; their gospel is truth...If nothing else, the hooks alone should be enough
to keep you coming back." - Nashville's Dead

Protomartyr's sound is distinct, but hard to pin down with human language. ... It'd be much easier to describe
using a series of buzzing tones and propulsive beats, but then you'd be listening to Protomartyr.- KEXP

In a city full of brilliant people with dead-end jobs and dampened by bitter-cold winters,
playing music offers a cheap outlet. Protomartyr's taut, austere rock was incubated in a
freezing Detroit warehouse littered with beer cans and cigarette butts and warmed, feebly,
by space heaters. Short songs made for short practices, and the band learned quickly not
to waste time. Despite the cold, Protomartyr emerged with a sound that is idiosyncratic but
    relatable, hooky but off-kilter.

Protomartyr's economical rock elicits comparisons to possible antecedents like Pere Ubu
or The Fall as well as local contemporaries like Frustrations or Tyvek (whose frontman Kevin
Boyer played bass in an early iteration of Protomartyr). Singer Joe Casey's dry declarative
snarl serves as a reliable anchor, granting his bandmates - guitarist Greg Ahee, drummer
Alex Leonard and bassist Scott Davidson - the opportunity to explore textures and
reinforce the rhythm section. This is never more apparent than on the band's sophomore
LP and Hardly Art debut, Under Color of Official Right. Where 2012's No Passion All
Technique favored comparatively straightforward punk structures, Under Color takes a
more exploratory approach. "Tarpeian Rock" places punk vitriol against a minimalist
backing and "Scum, Rise!" casts shadows with guitars that alternately chime and clang.

The cheap outlet, crafted by cold hands in a poorly insulated practice space has, perhaps
unwittingly, become a model of Motor City efficiency. And, more than that, it's produced a
    stunner of a sophomore album.

    Disturbing Wildlife

Invisible Familiars has announced their debut album, Disturbing Wildlife, will be released on Other Music Recording Co. In conjunction with today's LP reveal, the band premiered album track "Heavenly All" - featuring Nels Cline on guitar - via Bullet. Invisible Familiars signed to Other Music this spring, releasing the 7" single "Clever Devil" b/w "Digger's Invitation" in June. Stereogum called it, "T. Rex in a funhouse of horrors," advising, "Let it cast a spell on you." Invisible Familiars is led by Jared Samuel, a New York City-based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has long made his living playing music and supporting a variety of NYC artists - from Sharon Jones to Martha Wainwright, and most recently, Cibo Matto and the Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger.

Samuel retreated to the seclusion of a houseboat docked in Jamaica Bay to write the music and words that would become Disturbing Wildlife. It was the first time I'd ever spent more than one day completely by myself, said Samuel, wondering just exactly what is real and then, ultimately, feeling fine. New single Heavenly All is a lyrical treasure map to the transformative and often playful experience of solitude: talking to myself again, cravin heavy metal. Back on land, Samuel enlisted good friend Michael Leonhart (Steely Dan/Yoko Ono) to co-produce the record and gathered a striking group of musicians to help perform it, including Robbie Mangano, Tim Kuhl, Jolie Holland, Yuka Honda & Miho Hatori (Cibo Matto), Nels Cline, Ryan Sawyer, Stuart Bogie (Antibalas), and many more.

Disturbing Wildlife is a record that slinks and slithers through time, defying the notion of genre and embracing the risk of feeling. It never lets the listener pin it down and, instead, returns the favor, holding you still between the sometimes-dream of existence and the exquisite power of Samuel's compositions.

    22, A Million

22 stands for Justin Vernon. The number's recurrence in his life has become a meaningful pattern through encounter and recognition. A mile marker, a jersey number, a bill total. The reflection of '2' is his identity bound up in duality: the relationship he has with himself and the relationship he has with the rest of the world. A Million is the rest of that world: the millions of people who we will never know, the infinite and the endless, everything outside one's self that makes you who you are. The other side of Justin's duality is the thing that completes him and what he searches for.

22, A Million is thus part love letter, part final resting place of two decades of searching for self-understanding like a religion. And the inner-resolution of maybe never finding that understanding. When Justin sings, "I'm still standing in the need of prayer" he begs the question of what's worth worshipping, or rather, what is possible to worship. If music is a sacred form of discovering, knowing and being, then Bon Iver's albums are totems to that faith. The poly-fi record formed at the congruence of a bold yet delicate sonic palette. These sounds were the way out from the suffocating enclosure and captivity of anxiety.

The ten songs of 22, A Million are a collection of sacred moments, love's torment and salvation, contexts of intense memories, signs that you can pin meaning onto or disregard coincidence. If 2011's Bon Iver, Bon Iver built a habitat rooted in physical spaces, then 22, A Million is the letting go of that attachment to a place.
