Let England ShakePJ Harvey's newest album was recorded in a 19th Century church in Dorset, on a cliff-top overlooking the sea. It was created with a cast of musicians including such long-standing allies as Flood, John Parish and Mick Harvey. It is the eighth PJ Harvey album, following 2007's acclaimed White Chalk, and the Harvey/Parish collaboration A Woman A Man Walked By. But what is remarkable about Let England Shake is bound up with its music, its abiding atmosphere, and in particular, its words.
If Harvey's past work might seem to draw on direct emotional experience, this new album is rather different. Its songs center on both her home country, and events further afield in which it has embroiled itself. The lyrics return, time and again, to the matter of war, the fate of the people who must do the fighting, and events separated by whole ages, from Afghanistan to Gallipoli.
The album they make up is not a work of protest, nor of strait-laced social or political comment. It brims with the mystery and magnetism in which she excels. But her lyric-writing in particular has arrived at a new, breathtaking place, in which the human aspects of history are pushed to the foreground. Put simply, not many people make records like this.1. A Rainer Ptacek Tribute: The Inner FlameImport
Fire Records is proud to be reissuing the complete works of Rainer Ptacek, the phenomenal and much beloved slide guitarist from Tucson, Arizona, who originated Giant Sand's sound from the band's inception, as well as creating many remarkable recordings as a solo artist and with his own band, Das Combo, before succumbing to brain cancer on November 12, 1997.
The reissues start with The Inner Flame, a compilation of accomplished and remarkably diverse artists who were brought together to honor Rainer's inspirational work, featuring talents such as Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Emmylou Harris, Evan Dando, PJ Harvey, Victoria Williams, Vic Chesnutt, Jonathan Richman, Madeleine Peyroux and of course Giant Sand.
Originally released in 1997, the album was conceived as both a tribute and benefit album, with the proceeds going towards Ptacek's medical bills. Reissued now as a celebration of his remarkable life and extraordinary talent, extra tracks have been added by the likes of Lucinda Williams, Grandaddy, Chuck Prophet, John Wesley Harding and Calexico's Joey Burns & John Convertino.
We offer up this new version to pay tribute and celebrate the man, the likes of whom I've yet to ever encounter again, and allowing a glimpse now of what he had done here on the planet and to share that embrace for ever having known him at all.
The best way here to sum up the man is perhaps by his own quote. Near the end, during his final interview, when asked the impossible question of what he thinks we are all doing here in this life, Rainer answered without hesitation: to love away the pain.LP1

Four (Acts Of Love)Mick Harvey is pleased to announced details for his latest solo album, FOUR (Acts of Love), a follow up to 2011's Sketches from the Book of the Dead, due out via Mute on June 11th, 2013.
This is the sixth studio album from this prolific musician, a man renowned for his career with The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds as well as for his work with soundtracks (Chopper, To Have And To Hold, Australian Rules). In addition to his solo recordings and his feature length soundtracks his work as a Producer also speaks for itself having worked with Anita Lane, Rowland S Howard and most recently PJ Harvey's Mercury Prize winning album, Let England Shake.
FOUR (Acts of Love) was recorded on two continents at Grace Lane in North Melbourne and Atlantis Sound in Melbourne and features original compositions from Harvey in addition to exciting re-interpreatations of classic hits. Regular
collaborators Rosie Westbrook on double bass and JP Shilo on guitar and violin lent their talent, alongside new collaborators such as PJ Harvey "Glorious."
Harvey takes a turn at revisiting classics such as The Saints 'The Story of Love', Van Morrison's 'The Way Young Lovers Do', Exuma's 'Summertime in New York' and Roy Orbison's 'Wild Hearts (Run Out of Time)'.
FOUR (Acts of Love) is a contemplation on romantic love - its loss and re-awakening, its tumultuous struggle and its place in our universe.

Med Sud I Vid Spilum EndalaustInspired by the unfettered feeling of the acoustic performances filmed during Heima, Sigur Ros adopted a looser approach in creating their fifth album Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust. The album consequently is fresher and more human than anything they've previously recorded.
Rough edges, cracked notes, and the sound of fingers on strings are audible resulting in tracks (e.g. Illgresi) that prove to be the band's sparsest and most affecting work to date. Worry not though, plenty of electric guitar can be heard throughout the album ensuring Sigur Ros' commitment to challenging sonic limitations.
Med Sud I Vid Spilum Endalaust is truly a groundbreaking album for Sigur Ros. It's the first time they've attempted to write, record, mix, release and support (by touring) an album in the same year. Notoriously known for their laborious writing/recording style and their Icelandic roots, Sigur Ros decided to record an album outside of Iceland for the first time. Recording, mixing and mastering sessions took place in such un-Reykjavik cities as New York (Sear Sound and Sterling Sound), London (Abbey Road and Assault & Battery) and Havana. The result is pretty much their leave home album, the anti-Heima.
The opening track, Gobbledigook, is a manifesto setter with its shifting/no time signature. On the last track, All Alright, Sigur Ros find themselves singing a song solely in English for the first time. The seventh track, Ára Bátur, was performed with a full orchestra and the London Oratory Boys Choir. This was recorded in one take with no overdubs and the result was 90 people playing at once and just one perfect take. This is their first album working with Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey) and the first since their debut to not be recorded with Ken Thomas. It was a true co-production, one that found Sigur Ros breaking out of old molds/habits. Double LP on high quality 180g vinyl.
Sigur Ros' fifth album is the Icelandic band's most worldly, varied and impetuous. The band achieves a new unity in variety here, winding from near-glam romp and fireside-folk warmth to slow-climb grandeur with an attention to the repeated payoff in a sturdy hook and hum-along chorus. Algiers"This is revolutionary music in the truest sense of
the word. It demands action. It requires penance. It
destroys expectations." - Stereogum
"The Death Grips of gospel torching the South's
dark underbelly." - Rolling Stone
The debut LP by Algiers is haunted by promises of the past:
the rapturous call and response of millenarian gospel, the
bellowing urgency of 60s protest soul, the scene-searching
intensity of DC hardcore and the smeared viscosity of
post-punk and no wave. After all, as Marx once said: "The
tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare
on the brains of the living." But rather than revel in a state
of nostalgia, the band wields these burdened visions to
charge headlong into the future.
Over the album's eleven tracks, these three ÉmigrÉs of
the American Deep South lay waste to appropriators,
oppressors, revivalists and the cultural shock troops of
capitalism. Vocalist Franklin James Fisher's every shriek and
incantation will take you from the sweaty fervor of Dennis
Edwards-era Temptations through the righteous rebellion
of Nina Simone to the solitary midnight howls of PJ Harvey.
Shards of Lee Tesche's guitar, along with Ryan Mahan's
bass pulses and synthesizer slashes, pierce through the
processional, transforming neo-modernist hymns with
explosions of foreboding and dread that evoke the
vanguard of pop experimentation from Suicide to Roland
In an era when political subjectivity and human connectivity
have been smashed to pieces by the demands of finance
capital, Algiers has taken its stance: to maintain fidelity to
these subversive spirits and trudge toward the light. While
they may never arrive at their destination - consigned to a
life of wandering - they conjure the dead sound to life in
frightening new directions.1. Remains

Murder BalladsNick Cave's been writing songs about killing and other evil things since he first surfaced in 1980 as the Birthday Party's pale, skinny, goth-punk Jim Morrison. But the murder ballads that provide this set's title are different, tantalizingly deliberate. Sure, there's plenty of trademark Cave here, but Murder Ballads is a fascinating concept album that uses the narrative ballad form of the English folk tradition to tell of murder: random deaths, passion crimes, and killing sprees, all in one package. Cave clearly thrives in this genre, and he produces some of his sharpest and most facile writing to date. Song of Joy, a genuinely scary campfire mystery of a murdered family and an unnamed killer, chillingly weaves clues into the lyrics, while Where the Wild Roses Grow is a narrative duet in which killer (Cave) and victim (pop star Kylie Minogue) reveal parallel tales. Cave even shows his knack for adaptation on Bob Dylan's Death Is Not the End: he recontextualizes a song of heavenly comfort into a sort of zombie We Are the World (featuring Minogue, PJ Harvey, Shane MacGowan, and others) in which death is not the end of pain and suffering. Above all, Murder Ballads should be heard as a work of pulp fiction--as sensationally funny as it is harrowing. The already violent traditional song Stagger Lee becomes gangsta folk, so ridiculously packed with obscenity and brutality it would make the Geto Boys cringe. And Cave's (unintentional?) point to would-be censors--that bad-ass songs existed long before rappers polluted the airways--should not be missed. --Roni Sarig1. Song Of Joy

Pretty Hate Machine (2010 Remaster)Fans can now revisit the conception of Nine Inch Nails. Trent Reznor's Null Corporation has teamed up with UMe/The Bicycle Music Company to release Pretty Hate Machine: 2010 Remaster on 12/7/2010. After completing the score for David Fincher's The Social Network, Reznor oversaw the digital remastering of Pretty Hate Machine from the newly unearthed original tapes with engineer Tom Baker (whose NIN credits include The Downward Spiral, Broken, The Fragile, With Teeth and Ghosts). This remastered version includes an eleventh track, a cover of Queen's Get Down Make Love, originally the B-side to the Sin single and produced by Al Jourgensen. Rob Sheridan, NIN's longtime art director, has also re-imagined the packaging of Pretty Hate Machine under Reznor's supervision.
As a young musician in Cleveland, Ohia, Reznor took a job at a local recording studio and employed unused studio time to develop his own material. The nascent album was later recorded with his favorite producers including Flood/Mark Ellis (U2, Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey), John Fryer (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil), Adrian Sherwood (Ministry, Cabaret Voltaire) and Keith LeBlanc (Trackhead). The result was the first Nine Inch Nails album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine. All songs were written, arranged, programmed and performed by Reznor. The album featured the breakthrough singles Sin, Down In It and Head Like A Hole, and ultimately sold over 3 million copies, reaching Triple Platinum sales status. In the wake of the album's inital underground success, NIN soon developed a reputation as one of the best live acts in rock and jointed the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991. NIN have since sold more than 18 million albums, collected Grammy Awards and headline arenas, amphitheaters and festivals worldwide.
The Bicycle Music Company acquired the rights to Pretty Hate Machine from a division of Prudential Securities in the spring of 2010. It was Bicycle's intention from the onset to enable Reznor to regain some control of this lost piece of NIN's legacy, resulting in this artist approved 2010 reissue of one of music's most groundbreaking and influential albums. Note: The previous CD version was reissued in 2005 but was not overseen by Reznor and is now out of print.

"Jazz Rodriguez Bueno, Carla Perez Vas, Antonio Postius and Leia Rodriguez pierce
the surface with unified cries, screams and howls that seize attention in a flash."-
MOURN is a very young quartet formed from the friendship of Jazz Rodríguez Bueno and
Carla PÉrez Vas- both born in 1996 in El Maresme, Catalonia, Spain. The duo armed themselves
with inspiration from PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Sebadoh and Sleater Kinney and began
writing material, which they quickly released, raw and acoustic, on their YouTube channel.
These recordings caught the attention of their homeland's Sones Records. Despite being
teenagers, earlier this year they came out of the studio (along with drummer Antonio Postius
and bassist Leia Rodríguez) with a brilliant treatise of indie rock that has stunned those who
have had the opportunity to listen to it. Jazz (18), Carla (18), Leia (15) and Antonio (18) came
together to present these tracks with authenticity and self-awareness beyond their age. With
the confidence only residing in youth, the Mourn debut was recorded live in the studio in
two days, proof of which is in their live-in-the-studio videos for singles "Otitis" and "YourBrain
is Made of Candy." Both tracks perfectly capture the bands' affinity for the brevity of The

HozierSelf-titled debut album from Irish artist Hozier.
Ahead of his forthcoming full-length, Hozier released a 4-track introductory EP, featuring his fast-rising track Take Me To Church in addition to Angel Of Small Death, which reflects the gospel-soul gumbo at the heart of his music, Arcadian acoustic adventure Like Real People Do, and Cherry Wine, a raw emotional discourse recorded live at 6am on an abandoned hotel rooftop. Hozier played all the instruments (Fiachra Kinder helped out on drums), sang all the parts and recorded in his home studio, and Rob Kirwan (Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey) mixed the tracks in Dublin.
Born in County Wicklow on St Patrick's Day, Hozier gained worldwide attention nearly overnight when he posted the video for his song Take Me To Church in late September. The gripping black and white video, directed by Brendan Canty, highlights the turbulent plight of the LGBT community in Russia via the story of two gay men targeted by a homophobic gang. The powerful video brings life to the emotional song, which touches on the influence of religion on humanity.
The Take Me To Church video has quickly racked up views on YouTube, reaching millions of views largely on word of mouth. The track has been a fixture on Spotify's Most Viral charts, regularly appearing in the Top 10 in the US and the UK since the end of last year, and Spotify also selected Hozier as one of their Spotlight Artists to Watch 2014. Take Me To Church also hit #1 on Hype Machine's Most Popular chart, and has also been hovering on the top of Ireland's singles chart, outselling acts like Lorde and One Direction week after week. Hozier has been playing to packed rooms in Ireland, and his first London show sold out in minutes, underscoring the phenomenon that has emerged in such a short time. UK tastemaker Zane Lowe has also just selected Hozier for his coveted Hottest Record spotlight.LP 1

AcrobatsNew album. New sound. On Acrobats London's Peggy Sue has put down the acoustic guitars, this time opting instead for buzzing guitars and crackling amps. Recorded with producer of the moment John Parish --known for his extensive work with PJ Harvey, Sparklehorse and EELS -- Acrobats keeps the propulsive energy of their former work, but this time the sonics back up the mood. Songwriters Rosa and Katy, and drummer Olly called upon early influences like Sonic Youth and The Breeders when conceiving Acrobats which, coupled with recently acquired electric guitars and a new practice space, released the ferocity that had always been swimming just beneath the surface of the band's music. Parish successfully harnesses this newly minted electricity, resulting in the fulfillment of several albums and EP's worth of musical innuendo. Dot Hacker is the project of California-based musicians
Josh Klinghoffer, Clint Walsh, Eric Gardner, and Jonathan

seemingly never-ending list of artists, including Gnarls

notably, guitarist and lead singer Josh Klinghoffer plays

"piercing hooks and transfixing arrangements" (Billboard)
that album had to offer. N°3 finds the band at their most

A New NatureThe record, their third album, following last year's Wash The Sins Not Only The Face, and their second release of 2014 after a split with Thought Forms in April, marks something of a change of tact for the band. For starters, it's coming out via the band's own new imprint, Nostromo Records, following an amicable split with their previous label Matador. It's also been recorded by the well-worn, expert hands of Steve Albini, no less, at his Chicago studio Electrical Audio following a successful Pledge Music campaign earlier this year. Most significantly, it sees the band stripping back their sound and taking out a lot of the electronic matter, instead forging even more expansive songs (the album's centrepiece is the near-15-minute 'The Jungle') in raw, more live-feeling sonics. 'Blood Teachings' is a good case in point, with its Swans-esque heaving repetition providing a soundbed over which Rachel Davies unfurls a mesmeric vocal, not dissimilar to former Albini collaborator PJ Harvey, building to a razing, fuzzed crescendo.LP1

Cry Is For The FliesThe garage-punk trio Le Butcherettes are like the brilliant offspring of surrealist Luis Bunuel and intrepid rock icon PJ Harvey. Led by 24-year-old
vocalist/guitarist/pianist Teri Gender Bender (a recent transplant to L.A. from Guadalajara, Mexico) Le Butcherettes bring a brazen intensity and playful,
hook-laden simplicity that hacks to pieces all forms of pretension and excess.
The band's songs and wildly cathartic live shows have often drawn comparisons to Karen-O, Patti Smith, Bikini Kill and many other female-fronted rock
groups, but there's a theatricality to Le Butcherettes that brings a further reaching sense of mystery and imagery to the band.
Originally forming as a duo, Le Butcherettes began in 2007 as the brainchild of vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist Teri Gender Bender; a modern feminist who
cites Sylvia Plath and Malcolm X as major influences. Born to a Mexican stage actress mother and a father who was a fervent lover of the arts, Teri was
constantly surrounded by creative energy. Following the death of her father, Teri Gender Bender moved back to Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to begin a
new and eventful chapter in her life, and with that the first page of Le Butcherettes was written.1. Burn The Scab

FROOTFroot is the upcoming third studio album by Welsh recording artist Marina Diamandis, professionally known as Marina and the Diamonds.
Welsh by birth, kaleidoscopic by nature, Marina Diamandis is a serial college drop-out who once dressed up as a boy to audition for a reggae boy-band, hoping to amuse the record label into signing her. After further failed auditions (girl bands, musicals), in a fit of ambitious pique, she taught herself piano and created Marina and The Diamonds in 2005 (it's just her, the Diamonds are the audience). She was a MySpace generation D.I.Y powerhouse who hand-made and sold her own CDs to Rough Trade until being signed to Warner Music Group's '679 Recordings' in 2008.
Acclaimed overnight as an intriguing, confrontational and theatrical amalgam of Kate Bush and PJ Harvey, she was nominated in 2010 for both the Brits Critic's Choice Award and the BBC Sound of 2010. She looks back on her early years, now, with some ambivalence. I experimented with my voice a lot, I was young, amateurish and ambitious she decides. I feel different now. My voice is far more controlled and my writing style has matured. For me, it's a real, coherent step-up. I would love to one day be a great artist.1. Happy

The Something RainTindersticks has been charting a glorious trajectory since returning to action in 2008 following a 5-year hiatus. With band leader Stuart A. Staples and co-founders David Boutler and Neil Fraser forming a core trio of original members, Tindersticks definitively returned to form with two critically-acclaimed albums in 2008 and 2010. The band's new record, The Something Rain, makes this a trifecta.
The Something Rain brims and bristles with canny narrative thrust. Slinky, supple compositions are spiked with plenty of barbed edges and sparkling fizz. Right out of the gate, album opener Chocolate features David Boulter's sequel to the spoken-word classic My Sister from Tindersticks' eponymous 1995 release. Boulter narrates the story while the band works up a brilliant, brewing crescendo, abetted by the swirling horns of long-time collaborator Terry Edwards.
The Something Rain is indeed a new Tindersticks classic, edgier, more exuberant and more expansive, a fine 9-song set of rolling, at times rollicking, and always inimitably Tinderstickian takes on smoky Northern Soul. First Tindersticks album to be entirely produced by the band, with Stuart A. Staples assuming full recording and mixing duties at his own Le Chien Chanceux studio. Features renowned horn player Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Gallon Drunk) and vocalist Gina Foster on several tracks. 180g LP includes art print poster and download code.1. Chocolate

The Ghost Who Walks/Stolen RosesKaren Elson's The Ghost Who Walks marks the debut solo release from the British singer/songwriter. Her transformation from fashion's favorite redheaded ingÉnue to beguiling chanteuse has been something of a slow burn. In 2003 she provided vocals for a version of Robert Plant's ''Last Time I Saw Her'' and in 2006 she recorded an English language version of ''Je T'Aime..Moi Non Plus'' (''I Love You... Me Neither'') with Cat Power for a Serge Gainsbourg tribute album, but her main musical outlet has been as a founding member of New York City cabaret The Citizens Band, a downtown collective of musicians, performers, artists and acrobats whose lively Weimar-esque performances have enjoyed successful theatrical runs of their politically thematic shows.
Writing almost exclusively in the sanctuary of a closet in her bedroom, Karen's songwriting blossomed. A fledgling songwriter might naturally be nervous to play their work for a spouse but for Karen the trepidation was exacerbated by her husband's own talent. It took many months of cajoling for Karen to play Jack White her songs but his reaction was immediate: let's get into the studio.
Karen has already won accolades for her stunning voice, but The Ghost Who Walks is still bound to surprise those who've never seen her perform with her cabaret troupe. The songwriting is especially impressive and, as something of a music obsessive since an early age, Karen sites a long list of influences and inspirations, including Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Sandy Denny, Opal and Rain Parade. The track The Ghost Who Walks, also the title of her forthcoming album, is a haunting murder ballad but the title came from a high school nickname which Karen endured before embarking on her fashion career. It's an apt title for an elegant and haunting album.

02:54Sister duo 2:54, consisting of Colette and Hannah Thurlow, have established themselves as one of 2012's most important breakthrough UK bands. Occupying a low-lit, vivid space, they unite a distinct concoction of ideas and influences that taps a rock and punk lineage notoriously anchored by the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and Kyuss. However, their sound neatly neighbors the darker, atmospheric reaches of R&B's finest, as well as timeless walls of sound.
The fact 2:54 have picked up fans from all the above worlds and more is testament not only to their sophisticated and nuanced tastes, but just how compelling a proposition the music they make is. Yet it's only now, with this their first full-length offering that the power of what they do will be revealed for all to see.
Recorded mostly by Mercury-winning producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey etc), and mixed by the legendary Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine In Nails etc), their debut album collects together a cohesive and captivating selection of highlights from their already burgeoning catalog. The 10-songs that together make up 2:54 are ripe with danger and beauty. This is a record that thrums with life, signaled immediately with the gale-force opener, Revolving, a real bittersweet blizzard.
From then on the sisters Thurlow proceed to mine their own distinctive brand of haunted, freaked grooves and cloud-bursting melody, channeling love, loss and longing to spellbinding effect. This is an album with truly no filler. First spin will leave the propulsive, woozy thrust of Easy Undercover's refrains ringing in heads, as will the dueling guitars and surging, urgent cry of Sugar's dance floor rhythms. The smouldering solemnity of Circuitry, the delicate, scorched beauty of Watcher and the album closer Creeping are realized here in magnificent and malevolent new form that few will be prepared for.
Over the course of its 10-tracks it becomes clear that this is a rarefied, captivating affair, a beautifully sustained exercise in mood and tension that almost feels in a league and scene all its own. It's a bewitching snapshot of 2:54 thus far and also a glimpse of the heady future that awaits them.1. Revolving
