Liquid SpiritLiquid Spirit is the remarkable major label debut from GRAMMY-nominated jazz and soul singer Gregory Porter. The 14-track album is further justification for Porter's quick ascent into the top ranks of jazz and R&B singers today, and it also features 10 new originals which showcase Porter's innate gift for writing poignant songs based upon personal experiences with a relatable and emotional immediacy. Also included is a stirring rendition of the jazz standard "I Fall In Love Too Easily," as well as covers of Abbey Lincoln's "Lonesome Lover" and Ramsey Lewis' hit "The 'In' Crowd."
"I firmly consider myself a jazz singer but I enjoy blues, southern soul, and gospel," says Porter. "Those elements make their way inside my music. And I've always heard them in jazz." Indeed, Porter wields one of the most captivating baritone voices in music today. It emits enormous soul that conveys both the emotions and intellect of any given song without relying on vocal histrionics. In The New York Times, Nate Chinen wrote: "Gregory Porter has most of what you want in a male jazz singer, and maybe a thing or two you didn't know you wanted." Jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater praised Porter in the pages of JazzTimes by saying, "We haven't had a male singer like him in a long time. He's such a wonderful writer. He's a story teller."
On Liquid Spirit, Porter retains the same core musicians that accompanied him on his previous two albums - pianist and music director, Chip Crawford, drummer Emanuel Harrold, bassist Aaron James, alto saxophonist Yosuke Sato, and tenor saxophonist Tivon Pennicott. On a few selections, Porter complements that ensemble with trumpeter Curtis Taylor, and organist Glenn Patscha. Producer Brian Bacchus also returns, as well as arranger and associate producer Kamau Kenyatta.
Porter sees Liquid Spirit as a logical progression in his burgeoning discography as it touches on some of the same themes, particularly the highs and lows of romance, his childhood, and socio-political observations. More pointedly, he views the title-track, a rousing, hand-clapping gospel-jazz romp, dealing with replenishing "thirsty" listeners with more substantial music, as the flipside to last year's "Bling Bling," a blistering song on his previous album Be Good on which the protagonist had so many artistic gifts to give but no one to give them to. Similar sentiments occur on "Musical Genocide," on which Crawford hammers a dark rhythmic figure against James' bluesy bass accompaniment as Porter declares his refusal of accepting the insistent squashing of quality, diverse music and culture by a mainstream in favor of disposable, homogenized pap.
In part, these songs are based upon Porter's reflections on new fans, worldwide, who come to him saying, "Where have you been?" or "How come I've never heard you before." "Not saying that I am 'what is,' Porter says, "But I think maybe what I'm doing is what people actually want to hear. There are some people who want that liquid spirit - a soulful, thoughtful sound - and they haven't been getting it."1. No Love Dying

Take Me To The AlleyLiquid Spirit - which followed Porter's critically-acclaimed and GRAMMY-nominated albums Water (2010) and Be Good (2012) - was released in the Fall of 2013 and quickly grew into a global phenomenon, selling a million albums worldwide and becoming the most streamed jazz album of all-time with over 20 million streams. The album sold Platinum in the U.K. and Germany, and in the U.S. Porter made his first-ever national TV appearances on The Tonight Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live while ESQUIRE and NPR Music both declared him "America's Next Great Jazz Singer." Liquid Spirit also won Porter his first GRAMMY Award in 2014 for Best Jazz Vocal Album while also earning him a Best Traditional R&B Performance nomination for his affecting ballad "Hey Laura."
In the Fall of 2015 Porter finally found the time to return to the studio in New York City to record Take Me To The Alley. As he's done on his previous three albums, Porter teamed with producer Kamau Kenyatta to craft a collection of stirring originals that juxtapose the personal and political. His partnership with Kenyatta started in the mid-1990s when he was a student at San Diego State University (Porter began his college years playing football on a full athletic scholarship before a shoulder injury diverted him into a music career). It was through Kenyatta's mentorship that Porter's professional musical career began.
Reinforcing their well-honed rapport is the return of Porter's core accompanying musicians - pianist and music director Chip Crawford, bassist Aaron James, drummer Emanuel Harrold, alto saxophonist Yosuke Sato, and tenor saxophonist Tivon Pennicott. Singer Alicia Olatuja, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, and organist Ondrej Pivec also make appearances throughout.1. Holding On

Like its predecessor, Better Call Saul has received critical acclaim. It has garnered several nominations, including fourteen Primetime Emmy Awards, seven Writers Guild of America Awards, five Critics' Choice Television Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award and two Golden Globe Awards. The series premiere held the record for the highest-rated scripted series premiere in basic cable history at the time of its airing.
Dave Porter, the composer of the score, has also written the opening theme and complete score of Breaking Bad. For his work on Breaking Bad, Porter has won an ASCAP Award. The Better Call Saul score features songs from the first and second series.

Mack The Knife: Ella In Berlin43-year-old Ella rolls through her typical routine in feisty fashion on this 1960 recording, which documents the opening show of her European tour. There's the Satchmo impersonation (a joyous Mack the Knife), the lengthy scat showcase (How High the Moon), and a bevy of Gershwin and Porter tunes. Double DynamiteThis was the second Sam & Dave album to enjoy significant crossover appeal. The 1967 record included such hits as Said I Wasn't Gonna Tell Nobody, Soothe Me, and When Something Is Wrong with My Baby. Isaac Hayes and David Porter were now rolling as songwriters, and even though the record didn't attain big pop numbers, the singles clicked with both soul and pop audiences. More importantly, Sam & Dave's teamwork and vocal interaction were establishing them as major stars.

Mo BeautyMo Beauty is the debut solo release from celebrated singer/songwriter Alec Ounsworth, who earned acclaim with his band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The album was produced by veteran musician/producer and fellow Philadelphia native Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Blasters, John Lee Hooker, The Replacements), who initially suggested a New Orleans setting for recording. Working with some of the city's most storied musicians, including George Porter of The Meters on bass, Ounsworth has crafted a collection of songs that pick up where Clap Your Hands Say Yeah leave off. Mo Beauty carries on the band's vein of quirky humor, unabashed melody, and sonic experimentation, but with the weight of New Orleans and its history hovering over the recording, Ounsworth has dug deep on songs like Holy, Holy, Holy Moses (song for New Orleans), while tracks like South Philadelphia groove in a whole new way.
Mo Beauty features George Porter, Jr. on bass, Stanton Moore on drums, Robert Walter on keys, and Matt Sutton on baritone and pedal-steel guitars, with additional help from members of the talented New Orleans community.1. Modern Girl (with scissors)

Jolene is Dolly Parton's 13th solo studio album, produced by Bob Ferguson. The title track, Jolene, tells the tale of a housewife confronting a beautiful seductress who she believes is having an affair with her husband. It became Parton's second solo number-one country single; it also was a moderate pop hit for her, and also did well in the United Kingdom. It has been covered by numerous performers.
The album was released around the time Parton was embarking on a solo career, after having spent seven years as part of Porter Wagoner's weekly TV series and road show, and one of the album's songs, I Will Always Love You, was reportedly written to express the remorse Parton felt over the professional breakup. Released as the album's second single, it also became a number-one country single. In 1992, Whitney Houston's version of I Will Always Love You was a mega-hit pop ballad.
Two of the album's songs had been released on previous Parton albums: Early Morning Breeze was a remixed version of a recording which had first appeared on 1971's Coat of Many Colors album (the Jolene version was remixed to more prominently feature the bass and electric steel), while Lonely Coming Down had first appeared on Parton's Wagoner tribute album, My Favorite Songwriter: Porter Wagoner, from 1972.1. The Bridge (Awaiting Repress)180 Gram LP Mastered from the Original Master Tapes
This 1962 Record Marks Rollins' Return After Taking a Voluntary Break to Refine His Playing
How badly did Sonny Rollins want to refine his playing? The saxophonist shocked the world in 1959 and took a break, returning in 1962 with this splendiferous set, named after the Williamsburg Bridge, where he practiced by himself. He's paired here with guitarist Jim Hall, whose communicative lines, along with Rollins' esteemed solos and melancholy patterns, gives The Bridge lofty status. The quartet tackles both originals and standards such as Billie Holiday's God Bless the Child and Cole Porter's You Do Something to Me, turning up aces every time.
Mastered from the original master tapes, ORG Music's 180 gram LP presents this Bluebird/RCA classic in the finest analog sound it's ever known. Everything from each of Rollins' dip-and-dive patterns to the patter of Ben Riley's drums is heard with extreme detail and range.1. Without a Song

Just Like You is the third album by three-time American Grammy Award-winning blues musician Keb' Mo' (born Kevin Moore). Keb'Mo' has been described as a living link to the seminal Delta blues that travelled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America. His post-modern Blues style is influenced by many eras and genres, including Folk, Rock, Jazz and Pop.
Originally released in 1996, the album features guest artists Jackson Browne and Bonnie Raitt, both on the title track Just Like You. Unlike the first album, Just Like You features a more Blues-Pop to Blues Rock feel and more of its tracks feature a full band. The album was produced by John Porter (Buddy Guy, B.B. "[Jon Cleary's] genre-bending style is steeped in early traditional New Orleans R&B, soul and funk. " - LA Times
GoGo Juice is the new album from one of New Orleans' premier musical ambassadors, Jon Cleary. Made in collaboration with multi-Grammy winning producer John Porter (B.B. King, Keb Mo, Ryan Adams, Los Lonely Boys) each of the carefully crafted songs is a delicate balance of the smooth and the rough; instantly memorable hooks over a set of sophisticated and soulful arrangements. The tracks were recorded over several days deep in the bayou country of Louisiana and subsequently honed in his studio in the old Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans. A blend of musical intelligence with direct, accessible pop simplicity that draws from tradition and yet is distinctively separate from it, these songs represent the many aspects of Cleary's musical personality as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter.1. Perhaps the most talented son act in pop music, Jeff Buckley combined the often harrowing eclecticism of estranged papa Tim Buckley with the rock acrobatics of Robert Plant. This posthumously released collection of four-track demos and sessions helmed by Tom Verlaine indicates that Buckley's astonishing full-length debut, Grace, was no fluke. The young singer-songwriter puts his falsetto to good use on an extraordinary collection of original material, from the soulful Everybody Here Wants You to the psychedelic Murder Suicide Meteor Slave. And while his bluesy take on Porter Wagoner's Satisfied Mind may not be as revelatory as his earlier version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, this album offers ample proof that Buckley was among his generation's most gifted voices. --Bill Forman

1975 was truly a successful and transitional year for the classic rock legends The Doobie
Brothers. After recording a handful of high chart rock masterpieces, they returned to the studio
for the very first time with a new band line-up consisting of Steely Dan alumni Michael McDonald
and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and recorded the classic rock champion Takin' It to the Streets.
Along with originals Tom Johnston, Pat Simmons, Tiran Porter, Keith Knudsen and John
Hartmann, this revitalized chapter of the Doobie franchise became a sensation, as the album's
nine historic tracks prove 40 years after its release.
As with our continuing expansion into The Doobie Brothers catalog, Friday Music is very
proud to announce the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of the Takin' It to the Streets.

Just One Of Those ThingsContrasting downbeat ballads with an ironic brassy, upbeat big band attitude, the ironic Cole Porter standard Just One Of Those Things sets the tone for a distinctive, pungent experience of love and disillusionment with a swing. Brilliantly backing the intimately expressive and supremely musical voice of the incomparable Nat King Cole, a big band with no strings smolders, swings, saunters, storms, sighs and sizzles with the arrangements of the distinctive Billy May. Featuring top shelf interpretations of These Foolish Things, Who's Sorry Now? The Party's Over and more, this album is among its era's finest recordings of popular music and its quality, style and spirit remains unexcelled.
Using the original 3-track session tapes from Capitol's vaults and all-analogue systems including custom headstacks, 3-track preview heads, console and monitoring chain installed at AcousTech specially for these releases, mastering engineers Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman realize the stunning beauty of these recordings. A superb track recorded for the album, You'll Never Know, which was omitted due to space constraints, is included in this double 45-RPM 180-gram album set. Included with this deluxe reissue is a striking six-panel booklet complete with rare photos, a 2,200-word essay by Jordan Taylor on the album and a 1,200-word essay by Michael Fremer about the remastering process. This truly is a no-expenses-spared project, resulting in the ultimate version of this title and a historic reissue.

Acousmatic SorceryAcoustmatic Sorcery is the debut album from Willis Earl Beal, to be released courtesy of XL Recordings. The albums 11 songs are taken from a series of recordings Beal made while living in Albuquerque, NM. He arrived in Albuquerque without a plan, a place, or enough money to live off and began singing warm, visceral and moving tunes to help him cope while sleeping rough. He spent days drawing and printing up flyers, distributing them all over his new city. Eventually Beal found work as the night porter at a motel. It was during the late-night shifts that the 27-year-old musician from the south side of Chicago taught himself to make music. As the Summer came to an end, Willis plotted his journey back to Chicago. While he traveled across America he continued to receive phone calls as the flyers made their own journey. One caller introduced himself as Mos Def and together they plotted to write a script based on Willis life, with Mos playing the lead. Limited edition vinyl of only 1,500 copies.1. Nepenenoyka

The Soulful Moods Of Marvin GayeThe Soulful Moods of Marvin Gaye is the debut studio album by Marvin Gaye, originally released in 1961, and the second long-playing album released by Motown.
In the years after the release of this album Marvin Gaye became one of the greatest and most influential singers in the fields of soul and R&B is hardly a matter for discussion. What kind of impression the listening public might have picked up from Soulful Moods, his debut recording project, is another question, as it is certainly an uncharacteristic collection. It starts off with a whole run of standard numbers from the great era of American songwriting before tossing in a couple of trivial numbers from the developing Motown stable, including a Berry Gordy number that compares most unfavorably with the Irving Berlin, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart numbers that surround it. Fans of saloon singing may be curious to know how well Gaye fares in this difficult genre, and for the most part these are fine performances considering the versatile range of his voice and the depth of feeling he brought to most of his performances. No, this is not Gaye with a fully developed style, and it is hardly the innovative legend of Let's Get It On or What's Going On but there is nothing he could have been embarrassed about here. The studio musicians come up with nice arrangements of the material, sometimes even with hints of the punch they would bring to his later, chart-topping material.1. Masquerade

Fountains of Wayne (Awaiting Repress)180 Gram Vinyl
Every so often, a band comes along that digs back into what pop music is all about -- good, fun tunes. Fountains of Wayne is one such band.
Their self-titled debut studio album was released in 1996 and contains the hits Sink To The Bottom and Radiation Vibe. Recorded when the band was just a duo, Chris Collingwood and Adam Schlesinger provided almost all the instrumentation during the recording. Schlesinger and Porter had also been members of The Belltower, and bassist Danny Weinkauf later played with Lincoln before joining They Might Be Giants.
Written over a period of years as outlets to make each other laugh through inside jokes and references to suburban life in New York and New Jersey, the songs on the album were recorded in five days. The songwriting is straightforward and wonderful; nearly every song is a Pop gem. The result is an innovative album - very few albums released in the '90s have been this pleasant, charming, and all-round likeable.1. Radiation Vibe
