    Primaries

WIN WIN is the Brooklyn production trio of Alex Epton (producer XXX¢hange), Chris Devlin, and Ryan Sciaino (DJ/video artist Ghostdad). A band that at every step further defies classification, WIN WIN conjures its most transportive work to date with Primaries: an elastic and hyper-modern album of seductive pop permanence. Moving away from sampling as instrument and inspiration, Primaries is firmly in the realm of the analog and psychedelic: anthropomorphic and cybernetic: a blueprint for a sound that's simultaneously classic and futuristic. Couch Paranoia blows in on a wind of living, breathing synthesizers, disembodied arpeggios and call-and-response robotics. Album centrepiece Been So Long (penned with TV On The Radio's Jahphet Landis) crystallizes in perfect chorus, while the vintage sun-kissed surf jam Waster certifies WIN WIN as 'pure hedonistic pleasure-center music' (Stereogum). Newly signed to Arts & Crafts, following WIN WIN (2011) and Double Vision (2012) on Vice Records, WIN WIN has made an absolute monster of an artwork with the zeitgeist of 2015 as its source. With Primaries, the WIN WIN three have honed their most imaginative statement yet. The possibilities are endless when matching human to machine: this is the new chromatic sheen.

    For Emma, Forever Ago

Pronounced "bohn eevair; French for "good winter" and spelled wrong deliberately. This debut is centered around a particular aesthetic; Justin Vernon, the primary force behind Bon Iver, moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter, alone for three months. This solitary time fed a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. All his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss, and guilt that had been stockpiled over the past six years was suddenly purged into song. The NY Times called this record "irresistible", and it was given a "Recommeded" rating by Pitchfork. RIYL: Iron & Wine, M. Ward, and Elliott Smith.

The English shoegaze band Slowdive formed in 1989 and consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar) and the band's primary songwriter Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar).

The production on Slowdive's debut commenced shortly after Halstead convinced Alan McGee, head of Creation Records, the band had enough songs written for a full-length album. Slowdive actually did not.

The group hurriedly began writing songs in the studio, experimenting with sounds and cannabis during the process.

This eventually lead to their debut album 'Just for a Day', released in 1991.

'Souvlaki' is Slowdive's second studio album, originally released in 1993. The album contains synthesizer contributions from Brian Eno on 'Sing' (which he co-wrote) and 'Here She Comes'. Recorded in NYC, and featuring Coleman Hawkins (tenor), Thad Jones (trumpet), George Duvivier (bass), Eddie Costa (piano and vibes), and Osie Johnson (drums), this brilliant LP is proof that in 1960 Hawkins was in prime form, and still making significant contributions to the genre 35 years after making his first record! Not only was Hawkins (born in 1904) a pioneer of the tenor saxophone, transforming the instrument from an obscure novelty instrument into one of the primary instruments of jazz, he also accompanied and propelled the saxophone throughout its many stylistic changes, as jazz itself developed and changed in the ensuing decades.

Elegy is the third LP by the Finnish band Amorphis. The album is their first to feature a majority of clean vocals, sung by new vocalist Pasi Koskinen. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason

A Momentary Lapse of Reason, Pink Floyd's thirteenth studio album, was originally released in the UK and US in September 1987. It followed guitarist David Gilmour's decision to include material recorded for his third solo album on a new Pink Floyd album with drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright. Although for legal reasons Wright could not be re-admitted to the band, Wright and Mason helped Gilmour craft what became the first Pink Floyd album since the December 1985 departure of bass guitarist, singer, and primary songwriter Roger Waters.

Two Legendary PINBACK EPs Compiled, Remastered, And Released On Vinyl For The First Time

Remastered For Vinyl From Original Recordings

In the early days of Pinback, they were known mostly as two lauded musicians who spent their spare time away from their primary projects (Three Mile Pilot, Thingy, Heavy Vegetable) to hone their home recording skills while experimenting with ideas, tones, and instrumentation that didn't quite fit into those primary projects. Pinback hadn't yet become their day job; it hadn't yet become a well-oiled 5-piece touring machine, and it had no idea where it was going to go. In retrospect, that earnest curiosity is what makes those early Pinback recordings so resonant and so unique, and what separated them from every indie rock band of this century.

Every bit as powerful and expressive as their first two albums, the 1999 EP, Some Voices, and the 2003 EP, Offcell, famously bucked the perception of EPs as outtakes and toss-offs. What were ostensibly minor stopgaps between albums became massive fan favorites and staples of Pinback's live show. Having never been released on vinyl, it's only fitting that we revisit these poignant recordings - and take the opportunity to painstakingly remaster and repackage them into the full-length album that never was, the aptly named Some Offcell Voices.

The Best of the Grateful Dead Live: 1969-1977 - Vol 1

The live albums the band released during its 30-year career are the primary source for the collection, with some performances selected from the growing number of live releases that have emerged since 1995. Vol. 1 covers 1969-1977 with fan-favorite tracks such as "Bertha" from the 1971 Skull & Roses, and "Truckin'" and a searing rendition of "Morning Dew," from the revered double-album Europe '72.

"We wanted to follow up the 2015 The Best Of The Grateful Dead studio set with a live counterpart, and have focused our efforts on the band's primary live albums as well as some key tracks from archival concert releases," says band archivist and producer David Lemieux. "Just as there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert, there is also nothing like a live Grateful Dead recording; it's no secret that as good as the Dead's studio recordings were, they excelled in front of an audience, and this set provides an overview of just how great the Dead were live in concert."

    Selenography

Originally released in 1999, Rachels fourth album is a collection of songs that have been staples of the bands live shows and songs that arose from the freedom of having a home studio. A primary factor in the creation of this record was that for the first time, all three songwriters lived in the same city; Christian Frederickson having joined Rachel Grimes and Jason Noble in Louisville, KY. The first session at Chicago Recording Company in July of 1997 was a clearing of the decks, recording a backlog of songs the band had been performing live for years but hadnt put to tape. A year of touring and songwriting preceded the bands return to the studio, this time at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN. Four days of seclusion in the wilderness produced a group of songs which the band brought home to Louisville. Recording at home allowed the band to experiment with integrating live and electronic textures.

    The Age Of The Adz

The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its extensive use of electronics. The album almost entirely eschews the songwriter's former tools of the trade: namely, acoustic instruments that accompany an expansive narrative scope.

While the sounds on this record are distinctly artificial (drums machines and analog synths reign supreme), the proclamations of the songs are unabashedly visceral, sung loudly, with a backdrop of insistent orchestration. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, primary and explicit than anything Sufjan has done before, incorporating themes that are neither historical nor civic, but rather personal and primal.

    The Bloom And The Blight

Two Gallants, the San Francisco folk-punk duo prone to accidents and police raids, spent roughly four years on hiatus before making this album. You might suspect their primary motivation was staying in one piece and out of the slammer. But the time apart also had an unintended, quite positive consequence: It gave childhood friends Adam Stephens and Tyson Vogel time to recharge their batteries and come back with their most cohesive set of music yet. Now signed to Dave Matthews' ATO Records, the group that got its start playing impromptu shows outside the 16th Street BART Station still retains its scrappy charm, whether pounding through fuzzy, primal ditties such as Song of Songs or making like Dylan on the gorgeous ballad Broken Eyes. Here's hoping they survive the promotion cycle.
