Sign 'O' The TimesIt begins with the insistent drip-drop of a sequencer and ends with some old school R&B. In between, the artist who was still calling himself Prince unfurls an encyclopedia of moods, genres, and grooves. Widely heralded as a groundbreaker in 1987, this two-LP set is clearly the sound of a performer at the height of his power. On songs like the title track, If I Was Your Girlfriend, and the thunderous The Cross, Prince proves why the hype was justified. --Amy LindenLP 1

Sign 'O' The Times (Single)12 Maxi-Single Reissue
Featuring Sign 'O' The Times And La, La, La, He, He, Hee
Sign o' the Times is the lead single from American musician Prince's 1987 album of the same name. The song was originally intended for two separate Prince albums meant to be released in 1986, that were both shelved: Dream Factory and Crystal Ball. Prince sings and performs the entire track except for some backing vocals by then-girlfriend Susannah Melvoin, sister of Wendy, then a guitarist in The Revolution. Sign o' the Times was written and composed on a Sunday, when Prince usually wrote his most introspective songs.1. Sign 'O' The Times

I Wish U Heaven (Single)12 Maxi-Single Reissue
Featuring I Wish U Heaven And Scarlet Pussy
I Wish U Heaven is a joyful, spiritual song with few lyrics, which runs 2:43. The 12 single is a substantially extended three-part suite which runs over ten minutes.
Part One of the mix starts with a stripped-down version of the Lovesexy album song, remixed with a dance beat. The original drum programming and rhythmic electric guitar riffs are deleted for much of the song.
Part Two is a gospel rendition with new lyrics, continuing the spiritual theme. This part of the song was often sung in concert during the Lovesexy World Tour. The beginning of this section paraphrases lyrics from Housequake, from the previous album Sign O the Times. Prince also quotes the film Scarface with the lines Say hello to my little friend... and then introduces the Blue Angel, a new blue version of his custom White Cloud guitar featured in the film Purple Rain. Sheila E. is also given a call out, and her voice can be heard responding in this section.
Part Three is based on an outtake called Take This Beat and deviates quite a bit from the original theme. This segment has Prince using his Jamie Starr persona to humorously tout the fact that he's funky, musically talented, and has plenty of beats (songs) that are so fine. The song ends with a looped repeat of the title. This version of the song became one of the highlights during the supporting tour in which Prince would usually order the house lights to be turned up, and instruct the crowd during a call and response segment.
The B-side, Scarlet Pussy, is credited to Prince's alter ego, Camille. The song is very sexual, using metaphors of cats and dogs for sexual organs, a theme Prince previously used for the B-side La, La, La, He, He, Hee. Prince uses his sped-up Camille vocals, as well as a slowed-down vocal, similar to Bob George from The Black Album. The song features a saxophone solo from Eric Leeds. The decision to include such a raunchy song with the spiritual A-side was noteworthy. The edit of Scarlet Pussy was included on 1993's The Hits/The B-Sides.1. I Wish U Heaven (Part 1, 2, & 3)

Parade (Music From The Motion Picture Under The Cherry Moon)Calling this one of Prince's most interesting albums doesn't do justice to how kicky and playable it is. The soundtrack from his romantic comedy Under the Cherry Moon, the album often sounds like a preview of the supremely surefooted quirkiness of its follow-up, the classic Sign o' the Times. Marrying lean funk grooves to over-the-top orchestrations and trying his hand at Parisian balladry and a hushed, Pet Sounds-style instrumental, he triumphs as few other record makers did in 1986. --Rickey Wright1. Run The Jewels (Awaiting Repress)
Gold Yellow Colored Vinyl
This gold vinyl re-issue of Run the Jewels's 2013 self-titled classic was named Pitchfork's "Best New Music" upon release. Killer Mike's baritone drawl contrasts El-P's hyper flow perfectly, and with support from names like Big Boi, Until the Ribbon Breaks, and Prince Paul, this hip-hop album delivers. Tracks feature Banana Clipper, Job Well Done, and Twin Hype Back.
Metacritic gives this album universal acclaim, and critics agree: it's accessible with its duo taking on crooked politicians, fake rappers and religious hypocrites through aggressive flow and paranoid rhyme, and its fun, affable vibe is no sign of weakness.

follows up the widely acclaimed oddball-psych of 2010s
Forever Dolphin Love. Caramel boasts a unique brand of
mutated, lustrous soul that was almost wholly self-recorded
over a month in a Tokyo hotel room. Described by Clash
Music as "a true cosmonaut of inner space," the new album
explores different regions of Mockasins singular galaxy,
guided by his truly adventurous songwriting that favors
reconfigured pop structures with a skewed funk sensibility. If
Caramel wasnt enough, Mockasin has also been writing more
material for Charlotte Gainsbourg after penning the exquisite
Out Of Touch for the actress/singers 2012 mini-album,

Love The FutureWith their debut album Love the Future, the Harvard duo of D.A. Wallach and Maxwell Drummey, have boldy produced an album that is poised to break barriers and set new standards. The glorious She Loves Everybody mixes sensibilities equally drawing on Motown and power-pop. Beneath the Veil throws country twists into hip-hop aesthetics. Neal has echoes of swing, hip-hop and rock with a guitar break paying tribute to Les Paul.
The band has already been lauded by the press with features such as Spin's Who's Next `08 and Rolling Stone's Artists To Watch. And take it from no less than Pharrell Williams, who signed the unclassifiable duo to his Star Trak/Interscope label after an early copy of the album, recorded by the two largely in a dorm basement studio while they were students at Harvard, was passed from them to his engineer, Drew Coleman.
It's been a long time since I've heard a project teeming with this sort of musicality and originality, says Williams, the phenomenal artist/producer/trailblazer of Neptunes, N.E.R.D. and various other projects. You're going to watch history unfold with these guys. I feel it in my gut. That works for Wallach and Drummey, who trace an aesthetic lineage from Beethoven to Brian Wilson, from Les Paul to Prince to, well, Pharrell Williams. Choose Your Weapon (Blue Vinyl)Wrapped in soul, blending poetry and polyrhythms, the music of Hiatus Kaiyote is in a lane all by itself. The Grammy®-nominated four-piece band is set to return to stereos with their new album Choose Your Weapon. The album takes listeners on a journey through the group s self-created ecosystem, populated with songs each embodying its own mini-cinematic sonic soundscape. The album is the hotly anticipated follow-up to their celebrated 2013 debut album, Tawk Tomahawk. Choose Your Weapon was conceived on stages worldwide and honed in the studio by the band Nai Palm (vocals/guitar), Paul Bender (bass), Perrin Moss (drums/percussion) and Simon Mavin (keyboards) transforming the songs into exquisite pieces of music, pushing the boundaries of their comfort zone.
In addition to capturing the imagination of fans around the world with their innovative sound, Hiatus Kaiyote has also captured the attention of acclaimed musicians and media. Born October 7, 1944, and hailing from California, Judith
Lynn Sill was an American singer-songwriter who learned
how to play piano in her father's Oakland bar. She met,
befriended and started opening shows for Graham Nash
and David Crosby in the mid-to-late 1960s.
After a bit of interest from Atlantic Records, David Geffen
offered Judee a contract and she became the first artist to
sign with his then-fledgling Asylum label. During her early
days at Asylum, she sold her song "Lady-O" to the Turtles and
was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. Graham Nash
produced her first single, "Jesus Was A Cross Maker," off her
self-titled debut album which was released on September
15, 1971 and engineered by Henry Lewy (Joni Mitchell). The
song was inspired by her romance with singer-songwriter
JD Souther, who later wrote the song "Something In the
Dark" about her. The album featured Sill's voice in multiple
overdubs, often in a four-part chorale or fugue. Her debut
album was not a commercial success, despite good reviews.
Sill took over orchestration and arrangements for her
second album, Heart Food, which was released in March
of 1973. The album was critically acclaimed but sold poorly
and ended her association with Asylum and David Geffen.
Judee continued to write songs and in 1974 began to record
new material planned for a third album that was never
finished. Sill continued to struggle with drug addiction
and health problems, eventually dropping out of the music
scene completely. Judee tragically died of a drug overdose
on November 23, 1979, at her apartment in North Hollywood.
Sill's music was not commercially viable at the time but
was incredibly influential as well as ground-breaking and
many notable songwriters such as Andy Partridge, Liz Phair,
Warren Zevon and Shawn Colvin have been fans of her work.
Her songs have been covered by the Hollies, Cass Elliott,
Warren Zevon, Beth Orton, Bill Callahan, Bonnie Prince Billy,
Ron Sexsmith, The Fruit Bats and many more.LP 1

Delayed ReactionSoul Asylum is back and newly signed with 429 Records which will release their first album in six years, Delayed Reaction. This time around, the veteran band is energized with a recalibrated lineup that includes founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy alongside ex-Replacements, ex-Guns N' Roses bassist Tommy Stinson (who replaced original member Karl Mueller who passed away in 2006) and former Prince drummer Michael Bland.
Delayed Reaction, which was produced by the band and overseen by John Fields, bristles with the tightly wound, slightly ragged vibe that characterized the band when they emerged straight out of Minneapolis. The recording took place in various locations, beginning in Los Angeles and then relocating to New Orleans and Minneapolis and back to LA, each town giving the tracks a unique backdrop of local culture vibe.
Originally formed in 1983 in Minneapolis, MN, Soul Asylum has maintained their reputation for honest, heartfelt rock from their beginnings on scrappy local label Twin Tone (which concurrently nurtured the careers of seminal rockers the Replacements), through their commercially successful days on A&M and Columbia Records (where they scored a Grammy for the monster hit single "Runaway Train"). The band has persevered through the good times of garnering several platinum albums and accolades including a performance for the Presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton to enduring the personal tragedy of losing Karl Mueller to cancer six years ago.
Says Pirner on Delayed Reaction's recording process: "It feels like approaching it as an album and a thing that has a sequence, and a thing that is a piece of work in itself is almost an archaic process. Honestly, it's more organic. Even though you're using some of this newer technology, the fact that you're doing it yourself is what made it take so long and the process unique, this time.1. Gravity

I'm Not Bossy, I'm The BossHaving recently signed to Nettwerk Music Group, SinÉad O'Connor prepares to release her 10th studio
album in a career spanning over twenty-five years. The newly titled album, I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss
will be released via Nettwerk Records.
Indicative of where SinÉad is in life the album is passionate and direct, yet with an overarching fragility; her
voice is as powerful as it is tender.
The album's title I'm Not Bossy, I'm The Boss was inspired by Lean In's Ban Bossy campaign from earlier
in the year. "Originally I had a different title, The Vishnu Room, but a few months back when I saw the phrase
'I'm not bossy, I'm the boss' and became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign, I wished I could re-name the
album since indeed it can be tricky being a female boss and I think Sheryl [Sandberg]'s campaign is a terribly
important one," explained O'Connor. "At the stage I became aware of the Ban Bossy campaign it was too late
to change the album title because the sleeve was already in print. But last week, when the record company
received the promo shots, which included the cover shot you now see, they asked could they change the
planned cover to the current one, and that allowed me the opportunity of changing the title. Very happy girl."
From her breakthrough hit, 1987's Mandinka, to the multi-platinum international success of 1990's I Do Not
Want What I Haven't Got with its number one version of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," from her fearless
genre-crossing forays into Irish folk, and roots reggae to her collaborations with artists as diverse as Peter
Gabriel, Massive Attack and The Chieftains, O'Connor has trodden a unique path to become the one of the
most iconic female artist of the past three decades. There is no one like SinÉad O'Connor.1. How About I Be Me

Lily-OLily-O, a new album of reimagined folk songs by Vermont-born singer/fiddler/banjoist/guitarist Sam Amidon will be released by Nonesuch Records. The album was produced by Valgeir Sigurðsson (Björk, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Feist) and features the innovative jazz guitarist and composer Bill Frisell, along with Amidon's other frequent collaborators, bassist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Chris Vatalaro.
Frisell has been a hero of Amidon's since the young Vermont native first heard the guitarist play at the Village Vanguard during a teenage visit to New York City. The two musicians stayed in touch and had their first live collaboration in 2011; not long after, Amidon began contemplating a return to Iceland to make a third album at Sigurðsson's Greenhouse Studios. He eventually invited Frisell to join him and Sigurðsson, along with Ismaily and Vatalaro, to record what became Lily-O.
"I decided to put us all in a room together in Reykjavik for a few days," Amidon said. "I knew if I got Bill together with those guys they would get into a deep situation. I imagined that we would do something weird and fiddle-based, but when we got in there it just felt great to sing the songs I had gathered. Recording took about four days. I'd teach them the basic structure of the song; we'd do a few takes, and move on to a new one. There's maybe one or two overdubs but otherwise you're hearing what we played."
Lily-O's ten songs are mostly traditional folk songs gathered from disparate sources and refashioned in Amidon's signature way. The interplay between the four musicians is informed by their backgrounds in improvised music and the spontaneous nature of the sessions. As always, the central element is Amidon's voice, which, in his deceptively understated manner, tells tales of adventure, love, violence and redemption.
Lily-O follows four albums by Amidon including his 2013 Nonesuch debut, Bright Sunny South. 2010's I See The Sign and 2008's All Is Well were made for the Icelandic label Bedroom Community and featured orchestral arrangements by composer Nico Muhly. Along the way Amidon has performed worldwide in myriad contexts, collaborating with musicians such as Muhly, Thomas Bartlett/Doveman, Beth Orton and Glen Hansard. Applehead ManTranslucent Red Vinyl
When people think of the "Minneapolis sound," most ears point to Prince. But there were many other highly revered and influential bands on the scene in the '80s and '90s, Trip Shakespeare, certainly among them.
Matt Wilson and Elaine Harris met at Harvard and began playing together while Matt's hometown music scene was exploding with not only Prince, but bands like HÜsker DÜ and The Replacements. Matt asked Elaine to head back to Minneapolis with him, where they hooked up with Matt's friend, John Munson to form Trip Shakespeare.
The band became a local sensation and their debut-Applehead Man-appeared on the regional label, Gark, in 1986. Omnivore Recordings is proud to bring Trip Shakespeare back into the spotlight with a reissue of that classic debut, including seven previously unissued bonus tracks, some with Matt's brother, Grammy® winning songwriter Dan Wilson, who soon joined the band becoming the fourth member of Trip Shakespeare.
Applehead Man (co-produced by the band's John Munson) will be released in a digipak with liner notes from Jon Niccum (author of The Worst Gig), and previously unseen photos. The LP (first pressing on translucent red vinyl, with black to follow) contains the original ten tracks, liners and photos.
Trip Shakespeare would eventually be signed to A&M Records, and later, Munson and Dan Wilson would go onto form Semisonic, but the Trip truly starts at Applehead Man.1. Fangs

ADAD-EPI-2914xOff With Their Heads
HomeOff With Their Heads were signed to Epitaph after label head (and Bad Religion cofounder) Brett Gurewitz dubbed them "the best punk band going right now." Since their 2010 debut, the band have been winning converts opening for such iconic artists as Bad Religion, The Bouncing Souls, Against Me!, Less Than Jake and Dropkick Murphys. In Desolation won glowing press, such as Absolute Punk's description of "a walloping 34-minutes of Midwestern-bred punk rock with a dose of Descendentslike melody...plenty of gritty honesty and good-natured humor, like a punk rock Fresh Prince." The band has been on the road virtually non- stop, inspiring spirited singalongs, celebratory beer throwing and additional good
natured chaos. Now comes Home, chronicling the massive development of frontman Ryan Young's songwriting, and the new sonics that producer Bill Stevenson of the Descendents brings to the band's sound. For their many fans, this is more of what they want; for the waiting fans of Gaslight Anthem, Against Me! and great punk rock, this is the album to discover. 99.9%Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and raised in the city of Montreal, 23
year-old Canadian artist Kaytranada is widely regarded as one of
the most important new producers in the musical landscape today.
Since the age of fourteen, when he first began to DJ and when his
brother introduced him to music production software, his output has
been relentless. As he explains, "after he showed me the basics,
from that day on I couldn't stop making beats," pumping out a beat
a day for the next couple of years and soon after self-releasing a series
of EPs and beat tapes that quickly began to expand his reach.
Single releases like "Drive Me Crazy" with Vic Mensa and "Leave
Me Alone" with Shay Lia soon spread his name like wildfire and
gained listens reaching far into the millions. In addition to that
he's produced for artists such as Mobb Deep, Kali Uchis, Freddie
Gibbs, The Internet, & Talib Kweli and remixed the likes of Disclosure,
Pharrell, Missy Elliot, Janet Jackson, and others. Kaytranada
soon cemented his reputation and his sound; an undeniable swing
of the drums comparable to J Dilla's, a signature soulful touch in the
melodies, and a healthy dose of funky bass lines. Last year he was
tapped by the legendary Rick Rubin who has acted as a mentor,
eventually signing him to a publishing relationship.

Betty DavisOne can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music.
There is one testimonial about Betty Davis that is universal: she was a woman ahead of her time. In our contemporary moment, this may not be as self-evident as it was thirty years ago - we live in an age that's been profoundly changed by flamboyant flaunting of female sexuality: from Parlet to Madonna, Lil Kim to Kelis. Yet, back in 1973 when Betty Davis first showed up in her silver go-go boots, dazzling smile and towering Afro, who could you possibly have compared her to? Marva Whitney had the voice but not the independence. Labelle wouldn't get sexy with their "Lady Marmalade" for another year while Millie Jackson wasn't "Feelin' Bitchy" until 1977. Even Tina Turner, the most obvious predecessor to Betty's fierce style wasn't completely out of Ike's shadow until later in the decade.
Ms. Davis's unique story, still sadly mostly unknown, is unlike any other in popular music. Betty wrote the song "Uptown" for the Chambers Brothers before marrying Miles Davis in the late '60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix - personally inspiring the classic album 'Bitches Brew.'
But her songwriting ability was way ahead of its time as well. Betty not only wrote every song she ever recorded and produced every album after her first, but the young woman penned the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending Do-It-Yourself ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal.
In 1973, Davis would finally kick off her cosmic career with an amazingly progressive hard funk and sweet soul self-titled debut. Davis showcased her fiercely unique talent and features such gems as "If I'm In Luck I Might Get Picked Up" and "Game Is My Middle Name." The album Betty Davis was recorded with Sly & The Family Stone's rhythm section, sharply produced by Sly Stone drummer Greg Errico, and featured backing vocals from Sylvester and the Pointer Sisters.1. One can hardly imagine Prince, Erykah Badu, or Outkast without the influence of Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can't be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music. Betty penned the song ''Uptown'' for The Chambers Brothers and wrote the tunes that got The Commodores signed to Motown. The Detroit label soon came calling, pitching a Motown songwriting deal, which Betty turned down. Motown wanted to own everything. Heading to the UK, Marc Bolan of T. Rex urged the creative dynamo to start writing for herself. A common thread throughout Betty's career would be her unbending DIY ethic, which made her quickly turn down anyone who didn't fit with the vision. She would eventually say no to Eric Clapton as her album producer, seeing him as too banal. In 1968, she married Miles Davis and quickly influenced him on the magic of psychedelic rock along with introducing him to Jimi Hendrix-personally inspiring the classic album, Bitches Brew.
Miles and Betty fans have long debated the truth of a near mythological session recorded in Studios B and E at Columbia's 52nd Street Studios on May 14th and 20th, 1969. The landmark session was produced by Miles and Teo Macero and featured Betty on vocals, accompanied by Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, guitarist John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock on keys, and Dylan/Miles session bassist Harvey Brooks. Other players included bassist Billy Cox (Band of Gypsys), saxophonist Wayne Shorter, and organist Larry Young. Now, Light In The Attic, with full support from Betty herself, presents these recordings to the public for the very first time. These historic sessions-never heard, never bootlegged-predate Miles' revolutionary album, Bitches Brew, and are the true birth of Miles' jazz-rock explorations, along with the roots for Betty's groundbreaking funk that came years later, starting with her self-titled debut in 1973. While, ultimately, these recordings would go unreleased for nearly half a century, they would greatly shape each of their careers.
The vibe is intrinsically unique, fresh, and futuristic-jazz heavyweights playing psychedelia, rock, and jazz-fusion long before the term became commonplace. The songs include Betty originals and covers of classics by Creedence and Cream. The concepts explored on these previously unheard sessions fueled concepts that wouldn't be fully realized until years later with Miles' seminal On The Corner.
Additionally, included here is the first time rerelease of a 1968 Columbia single, recorded in October 1968 at Columbia Studios in Los Angeles. The session was produced by Jerry Fuller and featured South African maverick Hugh Masekela on trumpet and arrangements, plus members of jazz-funk pioneers The Crusaders-including trombonist Wayne Henderson and pianist Joe Sample. Two of the three tracks included here from this session are previously unreleased.
This deluxe package is a treasure trove for both Betty and Miles fans, including rare documents from the pen of co-producer Teo Macero, rarely seen photos from legendary photographer Baron Wolman, and new interviews with Mrs. Davis herself, Harvey Brooks, and Hugh Masekela-the entire project overseen with Betty's full blessing.1.
