The starter turntable of choice for audiophiles the world over!

The new Essential III builds on the successes of the Essential II. The Essential II is a fabulous sounding turntable. It's the least expensive turntable on the market that includes both a high precision main bearing and a solid, adjustable tonearm that's based on the award winning Debut design. It's become the starter turntable of choice for audiophiles the world over.

The new Essential III adds some nice upgrades compared to the Essential II. Cosmetically, the Essential III takes a cue from the award winning Debut Carbon DC, with a lustrous high-gloss finish that's available in Black, Red, or White. The platter also gets an upgrade: it's constructed of a dense MDF for minimal resonance and finished in a high-gloss piano black. The visual effect is striking, especially on the Red and White tables where the high-gloss platter contrasts nicely with the plinth. It looks really spectacular if you display it with some fun colored vinyl to accentuate the colors! The adjustable 8.6" one-piece aluminum tonearm is significantly more sophisticated than anything close to its price range, and utilizes sapphire bearings for minimal friction and many years of reliable performance. The Essential III also includes a factory mounted/aligned Ortofon OM10 cartridge. You won't find a better performing, better matched cartridge/tonearm combination in this price range.

The main platter bearing is precision machined high grade stainless steel and the drive pulley is crafted from aluminum. A new DC motor speed controller board regulates the platter speed and the Essential III now includes Connect it E interconnect hardwired directly to the output.

*Not compatible with Speed Box S or Speed Box DS.

    The Essential Going Back

    Remastered by Nick Davis

I decided to call this version of 'Going Back' 'The Essential Going Back,' Phil explained. In retrospect, I included too much music on the original version, and I believe that too much is not always a good thing. Hence this trimmed down selection of my favorite Motown songs.

Originally released in 2010, Going Back was Phil Collins' first studio album since 2002 and saw him back at #1 on the charts. This album was a personal labor of love project that found him faithfully recreating the soul gems that played such an influential role in his musical life.

This is one of the last releases in Collins' Take A Look At Me Now series. Each album in the series has been remastered by Grammy-nominated Nick Davis. Each album features a bold artwork concept in which Collins has recreated his poses from the original album covers with new photography that was shot in the present day.

This will be released as 180 gram heavyweight audiophile vinyl of the remastered album.

    Pro-Ject Speed Box S2

Have a question about this product? Please email our audio advisor or call 1-877-929-8729 with any questions or concerns regarding your equipment purchase.

The new Pro-Ject Speed Box S2 speed controller replaces the old and famous Speed Box S. It nevertheless has the same functions and performances. It is made for entry level turntables and midrange turntables that have a 16V AC synchronous motor.

It comes in a non magnetic anodized aluminium casing. The front panel is also in aluminium. It has a pulse switch which enables you to choose the speed (33 RPM or 45 RPM) as well as two LEDs which correspond to the speed selection.

Its primary function is to enable (by change in frequency) to change the speed of the motor and, in consequence, go from 33 RPM to 45 RPM without having to manually change the belt from one pulley to another (when you do not need to raise the platter!). This is very practical for those who have a collection of singles! However, the Pro-Ject Speed Box S2 speed controller has another function. It has a quartz and microprocessor control that ensure a formidable stability of the rotation of the motor. Its precision of 0,001% translates to a speed stability multiplied by 5. It is important to take into account that it is possible to obtain a rotation at 78 RPM by adapting a specific pulley and by selecting 45 RPM.

It is powered by an external power supply in direct current (DC) of 18 V. We connected it to a Pro-Ject 1-Xpression III turntable and a 2nd generation Pro-Ject 2-Xperience turntable. The results were very convincing. The gain in musicality obtained is undebatable and its user-friendliness make it necessary!

It is advised to use the Pro-Ject Speed Box S2 speed controller with Pro-Ject turntables (Debut 3, Essential 1, Genie 1.3, XPression 1, II and III, RPM 4 et RPM 5, Xperience) and Music Hall turntables (Music Hall 2.2, Music Hall 5.1, Music Hall 7.1 ).

CAUTION: the speed box 1,2, and S are not compatible with DC motors: Debut Carbon, Debut Carbon Esprit, Debut Carbon USB, 1Xpression carbon, RPM1 Carbon, RPM3 Carbon, 2Xperience DC, 6Perspex Acryl DC, etc.

    The Happiness Project

The Broken Social Scene Presents Series, in which the core members of the many-membered Canadian co-op release solo albums from under the safety of the band's umbrella, has, thus far, delivered a couple of releases that haven't fallen far from the BSS tree. Charles Spearin's The Happiness Project is the most unique release in the series so far and it began as a number of interviews, in which Spearin would talk to his friends and neighbors ranging in age and culture about, essentially, the subject of happiness. Working from these recordings, Spearin used the cadence, rhythm and intonation of these voices and then recruited musicians to play a singular instrument in a fashion that matches the meter and melody of these spoken conversations.

    Feels Like

Bully is the name for the Nashville quartet that is transforming familiar '90s alt-rock (Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Weezer) into smart, sharp-edged millennial indie rock - an apt description for the band's churning guitars, rambunctious rhythms, and tightly coiled intensity. Their debut Feels Like sounds alternately like a balled fist and a fresh bruise.

Bully is also the perfect distillation of frontwoman Alicia Bognanno's visceral approach to songwriting. She trades in steely observations, raw-nerve confessions, and intense anger directed almost exclusively at herself although a few bystanders and bad exes might get caught in the crossfire. Her voice rises from sugar-sweet to scratchy howl as she bares her most harrowing fears to the world. In other words, Bognanno is her own bully. Not merely the band's vocalist, songwriter, guitarist, and all-around visionary, she is also Bully's producer and engineer.

Based in Nashville, Alicia Bognanno formed Bully essentially as a solo project backed by a trio of friends: Stewart Copeland on drums, Clayton Parker on guitar, and Reece Lazarus on bass. Bully is less a studio entity than a stage act, one that has quickly developed a reputation for its ferocious live shows (the Nashville Scene named Bully the top local band in its 2014 Best of Nashville issue.)

On record, Bully strives to retain the band s formidable guitar attack while highlighting her boldly candid lyrics. The band recorded Feels Like live in the studio, doing as few takes as possible. Once they'd gotten a good performance, the songs were mixed immediately, not merely to save time but to preserve the excitable urgency of the music. Overseeing every part of the process put extra pressure on Bognanno to deliver some truly unbridled vocal performances. A deeply personal album by an artist bravely mining her own life, Feels Like is all about trying to figure yourself out about holding yourself accountable and acting like an adult in a society that doesn't offer very many good examples.

    Reflection Eternal

Universal Music Enterprises Continues Its "Respect The Classics" Tribute To Many Of Hip-hop's Finest With The Vinyl Reissue Of Rap Icon Talib Kweli's
    Historic Rawkus Records Catalog

After releasing a handful of essential 12s on various Rawkus Records projects in the late '90s, Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek were on the verge of becoming one of hip-hop's best-kept secrets. Yet their original incarnation as a duo expanded into a triumvirate with the inclusion of Mos Def and transformed their eventual manifestation into Black Star, thwarting their initial bid for acclaim. While Kweli's stardom may have been initially eclipsed by his more charismatic cohort, Mos Def, Reflection Eternal houses enough merit to establish Talib as one of this generation's most poetic MCs. Kweli is a rare MC, as his lyricism resounds with a knowledge that transcends his still tender age. He does not aspire to reprogram the masses with this album, just rehabilitate them, as he laments on The Blast: They ask me what I'm writing for/I'm writing to show you what we fighting for. In an effort to celebrate life, Kweli breaks down hip-hop's obsession with death on Good Mourning and Too Late. But it is his varied lyrical content that is most inspiring, effortlessly transitioning from the poignant circle-of-life epic For Women to the rugged Some Kind of Wonderful and Down for the Count, featuring Rah Digga and Xzibit. While the unassuming, largely minimalist grooves that Hi-Tek supplied on Black Star's debut longed for a dramatic flair, he displays a remarkable maturation on Reflection Eternal. In fact, Tek's loping keyboard wails, soulful staccato claps, and shimmering piano loops are often sublime in their arrangement and outcome. Though Kweli and Hi-Tek's debut harbors over-ambitious tendencies, clocking in at over 70 minutes in length, they are a duo that will undoubtedly stain their memory into hip-hop's collective memory with this noteworthy debut. Welcome to the new generation of Native Tongue speaking.

    This Mother's Daughter (Pure Pleasure)

This Mother's Daughter remains the most soulful record cut by Nancy Wilson during her Capitol tenure -- producer Eugene McDaniels proves an inspired if surprising choice to helm the session, and his subtle but ingenious jazz-funk flourishes are essential to the project's immediacy and appeal. McDaniels couches Wilson in settings as smooth and rich as velvet, crafting a series of mellow, gently propulsive grooves that flirt with contemporary soul but pay heed to the singer's roots in jazz. Wilson responds with a performance that's sophisticated yet saucy, commanding the spotlight with an intensity that's missing from her lesser Capitol efforts.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Regeneration (Pure Pleasure)

Around the time of this recording, Stanley Cowell had achieved a degree of prominence as the pianist for the advanced bop quartet Music Inc., which he co-led with trumpeter Charles Tolliver, as well as for unusual projects like his Piano Choir. With Regeneration he chose another path, essentially trying to produce a jazz-infused pop album with strong African roots, perhaps owing a little bit to Stevie Wonder. He assembled an extremely strong cast of musicians for the venture, including Marion Brown, Billy Higgins, and Ed Blackwell, as well as several African string and percussion masters and, by and large, succeeded conceptually if not commercially.

A few songs use vocals in a fairly standard pop framework, and, while they are performed capably enough, the lyrical content leaves something to be desired in typical mid-'70s fashion. But much of the rest of the music makes up for this with, among other things, a delightful fife and drum piece by Brown and strong bass work by Bill Lee (Spike's dad). Regeneration is an interesting, often enjoyable album which, aside from its own small pleasures, provides a snapshot of some of the cross-fertilization in genres occurring at the time. - Brian Olewnick

    Mama Earth

The all-star Mama Earth lineup of Joss Stone (vocals), Nitin Sawhney (guitar), Jonathan Joseph (drums), Étienne M'BappÉ (bass/guitar) and Jonathan Shorten (keyboards) will release their debut EP Mama Earth via Mascot/Provogue.

The project started when British soul singer Joss Stone and her former musical director Jonathan Joseph hit on the Mama Earth concept of an album driven by the dynamic rhythms of Africa. A band was assembled from all corners of the music world. Jonathan's compadre Étienne M'BappÉ, the dazzling Cameroon-born multi-instrumentalist whose rÉsumÉ spans from John McLaughlin to Robben Ford; Jonathan Shorten, who had produced much of Stone's studio catalogue between penning some of the biggest hits for acts including Gabrielle and (again) Joss Stone. Finally, there was Nitin Sawhney: the genre-slipping wildcard and one-man musical tidal wave whose collaborations take in Sting, Paul McCartney, and the London Symphony Orchestra.

The 5 musicians convened at Stone's house, where the musical squad didn't take long to feel each other out. Music was spontaneously written on the spot, without any preparation. In the meantime, Stone purposefully kept her own creative process separate from the four musicians. I left them to do their own thing with the music in the studio, she reflects, while I was cooking dinner in the kitchen. I deliberately didn't have any input in the music, because I didn't want to affect it - or it'd all come out hip-hop and R&B! Then they'd come across into the house, give me the track and I'd sit in the kitchen writing lyrics and melodies with my mum. So it was, like, 'You guys do you, and I'll do me - then we'll put it together'. And that's the way it worked. I also went down to the river on my own with a pen and paper and write in the grass by the river. Which was a good way to do it, actually, The whole project is about Mother Nature. It's supposed to be from her perspective.

Just ten days after they came together - and following a powerful co-production from all five band members - the Mama Earth sessions were over. And yet, you sense that the story of this fascinating band is only just beginning. Impulsive, dynamic and sometimes downright dangerous, this is an album unlike anything else in the five musicians' respective CVs, unprecedented in the clinical modern music scene - and sure to make waves upon its release. I guess this album is essentially how I think of music, considers Sawhney. It was all about being open to the moment. I think that's really what I loved about this project. To me, Mama Earth is what music should be about, really...

    Django And Jimmie

Django & Jimmie, the new studio album collaboration from Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, two of the founding fathers of American outlaw country music. The legendary singer-songwriters join forces and reignite the musical chemistry that made Pancho & Lefty a honky-tonk blockbuster and America's #1 Country Album following its release in January 1983. The success of Pancho & Lefty opened the doors for a number of successful follow-up projects including 1987's Seashores Of Old Mexico album, 2007's Last Of The Breed, with Ray Price.

Django & Jimmie premieres 14 brand-new studio recordings including: "Django & Jimmie," a duel tribute to jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and Jimmie Rodgers, country music's mythic "Singing Brakeman"; "It's All Going To Pot," a rollicking anthem for the emerging 21st century cannabis culture; the reflective and meditative "Live This Long"; "Missing Ol' Johnny Cash," a homage to country music's original Man in Black featuring guest vocals from Bobby Bare; a sublime interpretation of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright"; and the future country classic "Unfair Weather Friend,"

Among the 14 essential recordings on Django & Jimmie, Nelson and Haggard each pay musical tribute to the other through heartfelt solo performances: Willie singing Merle's "Somewhere Between" and Merle covering Willie's "Family Bible."

As Rhymesayers was transitioning from a local Twin Cities crew, who were known for
explosive and engaging live shows at coffee shops, raves, and venues around town, into
a full-fledged independent label, some of the most integral players in the crew decided to
form a supergroup, and thus began the legend of The Dynospectrum.

The group's formula was largely centered on the four MCs, Slug of Atmosphere, I Self
Devine of The Micranots, Beyond (better known as Musab), and Mr. Gene Poole of Phull
Surkle. Each of them had already made a notable impression on the Twin Cities scene,
so the idea of them coming together was easy to view as a force to be reckoned with.
However, an essential element of The Dynospectrum was its production, as Ant (of
Atmosphere) was digging deep into his explorations of painting sound with dark and
moody strokes. Yet another signature aspect to this album was its iconic artwork,
provided courtesy of the Headshots resident artist, Aaron "Abuse" Horkey, who has also
provided some new work for this special vinyl edition. Horkey's uniquely exquisite graffiti
stylings give the album a comic book-like essence while maintaining an air of elegance
and fine art. Lastly, in order to take all this creative energy and shape it into something
real, label CEO, Siddiq Sayers, acted as the sound engineer at the time for the newly
formed Rhymesayers studios, and took the lead on distribution and management for the
    project.

All of this resulted in The Dynospectrum being a landmark release in the Rhymesayers
catalog, regarded to this day as a cult classic, which makes it long overdue that we finally
get to see this full release available on vinyl for the very first time. This upcoming special
vinyl edition, just like our recent Overcast! 20th Anniversary vinyl release, has been
completely re-mixed from the original reel-to-reel tapes and remastered, complete with
bonus unreleased material from those same recording sessions. All the original music
and lyrics have been left completely intact, only enhancing the listening experience, so
that this breakthrough album sounds better than ever!

First Rays of the New Rising Sun (Awaiting Repress)

Cut from the Analog Masters by Legendary Engineer George Marino at Sterling Sound and Pressed on 180-gram Vinyl at RTI!

First-Ever Audiophile Edition of this Seminal Collection, Hendrix's Final Studio Album!

The Hendrix Family is Committed to Bringing you the Best Sound Quality Possible: Do Not Miss This Collection!

Set Joins Exquisitely Remastered Versions of Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, and the previously unreleased Valleys of Neptune!

Hendrix Has NEVER Sounded Better on Any Format or Pressing!

First Rays Of The New Rising Sun, the last graceful gesture by pioneering guitarist Jimi Hendrix, is the first album prepared under the supervision of his family. It compiles 17 songs whose creation span from March of 1968 to the last sessions at Electric Lady Studios in August of 1970, and which Hendrix inteded for release on this album, which was being made at the time of his tragic death. The material finds Hendrix expanding upon the parameters of his voice, concentrating on his singing while also embracing soul music more than he had on his other recordings. Hence, listeners hear funkier, bluesier, and R&B-slanted elements on this staggering set, which in no way comes off as a cheaply thrown-together posthumous release. Rather, given the level of experimental psychedelic exploration and dreamlike tones throughout, First Rays of the New Rising Sun rightly takes its place as Hendrix's final studio album. And it's never sounded so amazing.

Mastered from the original analog tapes, cut by legendary engineer George Marino on upgraded equipment at Sterling Sound, and pressed on 180-gram virgin vinyl at RTI, this LP is a sonic knockout on par with the very best audiophile recordings. It's no wonder that this release helps spearhead Legacy Recordings' unprecented 2010 Jimi Hendrix Catalog Project of reissues and new releases from the greatest guitar player in history. Albums don't get more essential than this.

Originally released in 1997, First Rays Of The New Rising Sun boasts many of Hendrixs most creative musical achievements, including Night Bird Flying, Angel, Dolly Dagger, Hey Baby (New Rising Sun), and In From The Storm. Finally, here is the link that connects Hendrix's involvement with the Isley Brothers with his own groundbreaking solo fare, now on a truly glorious-sounding pressing. An absolute must for any music fan.

    Bashed Out

This Is The Kit is the much beloved musical project of Kate Stables, born in England and based in Paris. Bashed Out is her band's third album, the result of an extended period collaboration with the record's producer Aaron Dessner (Sharon Van Etten, Local Natives). Dessner--the co-founder of the Brassland label--is best known for his work in The National. Indeed, the backing band he gathered for Bashed Out combines the talents of This Is The Kit's touring members (Rozi Plain, Jesse Vernon, Jamie Whitby-Coles), alongside a number of session players drawn from the Brooklyn music scene: Bryce Dessner, Thomas Bartlett (Doveman, The Gloaming), Matt Barrick (The Walkmen) and Ben Lanz (Beirut, The National) all made key instrumental contributions. This music is honest, human and humane-a folky-lovely slow-rumble. It's rock but of the hangover-friendly, stoner variety; it's folk but at a groovy speed. As notable as the music, however, is front woman Kate Stables, whose voice hearkens back to the classic singer-songwriter era--her distinctive, cutting vocals up front in the mix. It's a self-confidence gained since her previous album, 2011's Wriggle Out the Restless, which made her band a minor institution in the United Kingdom, especially on the radio which has embraced the group. This Is The Kit has received across the board support from BBC 6 DJs Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe & Maconie, Marc Riley, Cerys Matthews, and Mary Anne Hobbs--receiving further play from BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens, Jen & Ally, and Phil Taggart. Wonderful wonderful stuff, said DJ and Elbow frontman Guy Garvey, before arguing their last album should have made the Mercury Prize shortlist. The Line of Best Fit has already called This Is The Kit an essential fixture of British folk music for the past 10 years one of a handful of truly innovate songwriters working with the British folk template today. In America, however, the band is just building up to their breakout moment. Bruce Warren, program director at influential American AAA station WXPN has praised Stables' "warm and gorgeous voice" and we expect similar notices to come across on this new LP. From Kate's earliest year growing up in the UK town of Winchester, she learned that great art takes time. In some ways the place I grew up is defined by being a Roman Saxon medieval cathedral city, she explains. They started building the Winchester Cathedral a thousand years ago and they've been working on it ever since. It's an exciting moment to join This Is The Kit's continuing musical evolution into a synesthetic, shape-shifting entity-rooted in folk but encompassing elements of psychedelia, alternative rock, and electronic textures and sensibilities.

    Room 29

Compelling new Deutsche Grammophon album Room 29, a unique collaboration between Jarvis Cocker and Chilly Gonzales, asks what the ghosts of Hollywood's golden age can tell us about how we came to be where we are today.

Standing at the west end of Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard, the Chateau Marmont hotel has seen many a famous and infamous guest pass through its doors since it opened in 1929. A 2012 stay in one of its second-floor rooms inspired British lyricist and singer Jarvis Cocker to look into its history and led to this collaborative project with multi-faceted Canadian pianist and composer Chilly Gonzales. Room 29, a 21st-century song cycle, is set for release on Deutsche Grammophon Gonzales' score and Cocker's lyrics conjure up the lives of some of Room 29's previous occupants, as well as shining a light on the glittering fantasy and often bleak reality of Hollywood.

"If you must get in trouble, do it at the Chateau Marmont," noted Harry Cohn, founder of Columbia Pictures, in 1939. Jarvis Cocker was intrigued by the hotel's links to the history of the film industry. He found the key to creativity in the fact that Room 29 contained a baby-grand piano. What if it could "sing" of the life stories and events it had witnessed? The idea also ignited Chilly Gonzales's imagination, and both artists embarked on a three-year journey of artistic discovery, unearthing details about guests such as Jean Harlow, Mark Twain's daughter Clara, and Los Angeles mobster Meyer Cohen, alias "Mickey the Haberdasher". As well as dramatizing some of those stories, their songs capture both the essential loneliness of the hotel room and the ways in which moving images have "moved" people in ways they don't quite understand. Gonzales and Cocker have drawn on the 19th-century model of the song cycle for a structure capable of containing the broad sweep of emotions and states of mind elicited by the real and imaginary dramas of one unusual hotel suite. Room 29 emerges as the metaphor for a place within each of us, home to our deepest desires and fantasies.

Since moving to Germany in the late 1990s, Chilly Gonzales has pursued a breathtaking range of musical projects, spanning everything from rap and experimental rock to hip hop and Satie-inspired minimalism. The classically trained pianist collaborated with the Kaiser Quartett on his last solo album, Chambers, attracting critical acclaim to its neo-Romantic reflections on chamber music in the age of pop. The Hamburg-based string quartet plays a prominent part in Room 29, providing a sonorous tonal complement to Gonzales' piano writing and accompanying Jarvis Cocker's vocals. Lead singer and primary lyricist of Pulp for over 30 years, on and off, Cocker has also released two solo albums, and developed a successful broadcasting career, presenting both Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 4's Wireless Nights.

    Upstairs At Eric's (Awaiting Repress)

An 80s Landmark: Ex-Depeche Mode Member Vince Clarke and Vocalist Alison Moyet Create Synthpop Classic

Smoky Blues Purring, Cool Jazz Vibes, Disco-Tinged Beats, and Dancefloor Minimalism Add Up to Electropop Genius

All the Grooves Hit the Low-Frequency Targets: LP Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys World-Renowned Mastering System and Pressed at RTI

Includes Hits Don't Go, Situation, and Only You

The 1980s will forever be remembered for electropop sensations, yet few, if any, are quite as sensational as Yazs Upstairs at Erics. A standard-setting mÉlange of smoky blues singing, jazzy arrangements, disco-tinged beats, and dancefloor vibes, the smash debut fits equally as well at a late-night club as it does in a living room, where the records complexity and exoticism takes listeners hostage. No wonder the 1982 landmark remains one of the decades most essential albums.

Mastered on Mobile Fidelitys world-renowned mastering system and pressed at RTI, this numbered limited edition Silver Label LP breathes with a decongested openness, textural richness, and tonal palette never before experienced on previous analog or digital editions. Alison Moyets inimitable vocals, such a huge part of the records appeal, are dramatically enhanced, her sensual timbre, bittersweet crooning, and knockout range now encompassing the full frequency spectrum and projecting outward in a way that traverses the flatness of the original pressings.

Indeed, her bluesy deliveries are at once elegant and exuberant, and give collaborative partner Vince Clarke free range to construct beat architectures that encompass freewheeling disco, house music, uptempo dance, and chilled-out pop. The former Depeche Mode member also layers on elegant keyboard melodies, establishing contagious hooks and electronic-laced landscapes that preceded the techno explosion and do so with a cooler elegance. Tape loops, random field-noise dialogues, and synth-stroked bass notes add to whats nothing less than a perfect collusion of moody paranoia and soulful warmth.

While a cousin to synth-pop LPs by the likes of the Eurythmics, Soft Cell, OMD, and Depeche Mode, Yazs Upstairs at Erics is singular for its chemistry between Moyet and Clarke and an insouciant batch of songs high on emotion, style, and substance.

First mixed and released in stereo for the first time in 2012. These stereo mixes were created using the first generation basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs that were later added on second and third generation masters, to create the first true stereo mixes. The exception is Good Vibrations, which is a computer-generated stereo mix by Derry Fitzgerald. A remix in stereo wasn't possible because the original multi-track tape has never been located. The stereo mixes for Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), Beach Boys' Party! and Smiley Smile were produced and mixed by Mark Linett, and co-produced by Alan Boyd.

All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys.

After the much-discussed, uncompleted Smile project - which was supposed to take the innovations of Pet Sounds to even grander heights - collapsed, the Beach Boys released Smiley Smile in its place. (To clarify much confusion: Smiley Smile is an entirely different piece of work than Smile would have been, although some material that ended up on Smiley Smile would have most likely been used on Smile. Also, much of Smiley Smile was in fact recorded after the Smile sessions had ceased.), writes AllMusic.com

For fans expecting something along the lines of Sgt. Pepper (and there were many of them), Smiley Smile was a major disappointment, replacing psychedelic experimentation with spare, eccentric miniatures. Heard now, outside of such unrealistic expectations, it's a rather nifty, if rather slight, effort that's avant garde in the extreme. 'Wind Chimes,' 'Wonderful,' 'Vegetables,' and much of the rest is low-key psychedelic quirkiness, with abundant fine harmonies and unusual arrangements. The standouts, nonetheless, were two recent hit singles in which Brian Wilson's ambitions were still intact: The inscrutable mini-opera 'Heroes and Villains,' and the number one hit 'Good Vibrations,' one of the few occasions where the group managed to be recklessly experimental and massively commercial at the same time. - AllMusic.com

Charlie Watts Meets The Danish Radio Big Band

Before Charlie Watts became the best-known drummer on the planet with The Greatest rock 'n' Roll Band in the World he lived for a few months in Denmark. According to English trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Gerard Presencer, who is also a member of the Danish Radio Big Band, it was something he only found out about by chance when he and Charlie talked on the telephone in 2009

"I landed a job with Danish Radio Big Band in 2009. A week or two after arriving in Copenhagen I got a call from Charlie. Later the idea dawned upon me for a return to his Jazz days over here after nearly 50 years. I spoke with my boss at the Danish Radio Big Band and went about putting this live project together. We agreed upon a week in Copenhagen in October 2010."

They rehearsed for 4 days, then played a concert on the fifth day at the newly opened Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen. This concert was recorded for broadcast by Danish National Radio. Charlie and his long-time bassist Dave Green went to record shops and strolled around the city, with no need for security guards. Charlie made it clear that he did not want to be placed on a big riser above the band, as he found that this did not help the musicians to bond.

In choosing the material, it was important to focus on the groove. According to Prescencer, "Having Dave Green on bass as special guest was an essential ingredient, as these two boyhood friends (next door neighbours growing up in Wembley, North London) have unspoken psychic connections that bassists and drummers, so there are times on this recording where their abundant empathy makes the rest of the band comfortable enough to really play out and take chances."

The album includes seven tracks, including two Mick and Keith compositions, 'Paint it Black' and 'You Can't Always Get What You Want', both arranged by Prescencer and another one, 'Faction' that is based on another Stones' classic. There are also two by Charlie himself, both written with fellow drummer Jim Keltner.

A day or two after the broadcast Prescencer began to think that the concert was so good it deserved to be heard more widely. "The Danish Radio needed very little convincing to hand over the recordings to me to work on, as well as Søren Frost our regular drummer and rhythm section consultant from the big band and the brilliant recording engineer, Lars C. Bruun. So, after several years work on this, we have produced this collection of music from our gig."

Charlie Watts meets the Danish Radio Big Band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. In the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like Oliver Nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. The truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight.

Anyone who knows Charlie, knows how much he loves jazz. A few years ago when he and I were looking at a photo of the Stones playing in the 1960s he pointed at a particular cymbal and said, "I've still got that cymbal, but I don't use it on Stones' gigs, it's too good for them. I just use it on my jazz gigs." There's no doubt, that's the cymbal you hear on the first part of the 'Elvin Suite'.

Charlie Watts is one of the great ambassadors for jazz and every jazz lover will relish this record, and the fact that Charlie is involved may bring jazz to the attention of some that are not sure if they like jazz. Listen to this and you know you do.
