Music For The Jilted GenerationThe Prodigy's response to the sweeping legislation and crackdown on raves contained in 1994's Criminal Justice Bill is an effective statement of intent.
Pure sonic terrorism, Music for the Jilted Generation employs the same rave energy that charged their debut but yokes it to a cause other than massive drug intake. Compared to their previous work, the sound is grubbier and less reliant on samples; the effect moved The Prodigy away from US influenced rave and acid house of the past and toward a uniquely UK vision of breakbeat techno that was increasingly allied to the invention of drum 'n bass.1. Pay Close Attention: XL RecordingsXL Recordings is a collaborative endeavour, and many people have contributed to its evolution.
In the song "Out Of Space", Liam Howlett of The Prodigy provided a blueprint when he sampled Kool Keith of Ultramagnetic MC's rapping these
words: "Pay Close Attention".
And whilst XL has never had any outside ownership, Gil Scott-Heron advised me not to even consider XL "independent"; because everything is
This compilation is an attempt to illustrate some of these connections.
Part 1 is the roots of XL; underground music, made for DJ's. These roots
are still growing.
Part 2 features some of the singular talents who have taken the label further
than we ever envisioned. There is no unifying genre, and I'll happily confess to aesthetic opportunism; hopefully the thread of originality is evident
We've never compromised. The rave music XL first became known for was
known as "hardcore"; that spirit continues.
To show our appreciation for your support: thank you DJ's.
And thank you also to the retailers, writers and of course, ravers.

Includes Hey Luv, Crawlin and The Learning (Burn)
Rap duo Havoc and Prodigy aka Mobb Deep from Queensbridge, Queens, New York returned in 2001 with their 5th album. Resurfacing, after recording Murda Muzik, this time they approached the rap-scene differently, moving away from the minimalistic stripped-down heavy violence hip/hop.
Center of attention during the release of Infamy was the beef between Jay-Z and Prodigy. During the time of release Prodigy (of Mobb Deep) had been the center of Jay-Z's attack on his track The Takeover and Mobb Deep cut the track Crawlin where Prodigy strikes back on Jay-Z calling him H to the know. Tracks like The Learning (Burn) featuring Noyd, Kill That Nigga and productions from Scott Storch (Dr. Dre/Nas/50 Cent) for Live Foul still display the dark beats and straight-up street rhymes Mobb Deep are known for.
The first single of the album was the track Hey Luv featuring R&B group 112. Infamy sold over 800.000 copies in the USA alone, reached #26 in the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and has been certified Gold by the RIAA.LP 1

Capital PunishmentBig Pun remains on the best rappers ever list to this day.
Reasons for this weigh largely on his debut
Capital Punishment. His commanding voice and rapid fire
delivery make it clear there will never be another Big Pun. Pun
was New York. His confidence on the mic made him stand out
among his contemporaries. Similarly, the production -- by a
cast of many - remains ever so New York loyal. The close
cousins I'm Not a Player and Still Not a Player," may have
been the hits off this album but it is packed with so many more
that show Pun's true abilities.
"Beware" and "Dream Shatterer" are great examples of Big
Pun at his best, dark cinematic production with just enough
room to let him breathe fire. On "Twinz (Deep Cover)" Big Pun
is trading bars with his mentor Fat Joe over a remake of Dr.
Dre's classic beat. Here Pun delivers one of his most quoted
verses that contains among others "Dead in the middle of
Little Italy little did we know that we riddled some middlemen
who didn't do diddly". There are numerous guest
appearances, the best of which include afore mentioned Fat
Joe (on several tracks), the Roots' Black Thought on the MC

3rd AlbumShocking Blue was a Dutch rockband from The Hague that was at their peak in the sixties and seventies and gained major cross-Atlantic success. The band was founded in 1967 and after recruiting vocalist Mariska Veres they soon became huge. With their single 'Venus' they became the first Dutch band ever to reach the first spot on the American Billboard Hot 100. The band had a series of subsequent hits but decided to call it a day in 1975. Their influence reached well beyond their generation: even bands like Nirvana and The Prodigy used Shocking Blue's 'Love Buzz'.
'3rd Album' is strangely enough not their third full-length album but their fourth and was originally released in 1971. This reissue comes with six bonus tracks consisting of singles and b-sides and a gatefold sleeve.

Smoke Ring For My HaloPhiladelphia singer/songwriter Kurt Vile returns with his second proper album (2008s Childish Prodigy was a compendium of sorts). Smoke Ring For My Halo is a gorgeously layered record. Ranging from the tender breezy folk in Jesus Fever to the tuff urban guitar riff of Puppet To The Man, Viles distinctive Philly-accented vocal ties together a sweeping and evocative project, a true American psychedelic folk album.
This is no pastoral listening experience however, when Vile sings, society is my friend: he makes me lie down in a cool bloodbath, he sounds both exhausted and distanced from the ringing harmonics of his guitar and Mike Zanghis pounding drums. Even the gentler songs, such as On Tour and Babys Arms have a distinctly dark lyrical tone. The closest that Vile gets to some kind of acceptance is in the central track, the rueful In My Time, where he sings, I know when we get older, Im dying, but I got everything I need here now, and thats fine, now...thats fine.
Recorded at the Magic Shop by John Agnello, Smoke Ring For My Halo is a massive step forward for one of the countrys most beloved rock songwriters.1. Baby's Arms

A New Day Yesterday LiveSomething of an odd release, A New Day Yesterday Live documents the final date of a 60-day jaunt during blues guitar prodigy Joe Bonamassa's 2001 tour in support of his major-label debut bearing the same title, and (this is the odd part), released just a few months earlier. Just why his record company felt the need for it, then, is up for grabs (more promotion...thinking Bonamassa's virtuosity came across stronger in a live setting...who knows?), but what's clear is that the young guitarist's trio lacked nothing in terms of on-stage presence and performing tightness as compared to what was heard on said studio album. Their kinetic reinventions of oft-overlooked '70s rock classics such as Free's Walk in My Shadows and Jethro Tull's A New Day Yesterday instantly distinguish Bonamassa from teenage blues competitors such as the overly Stevie Ray Vaughan-reliant Kenny Wayne Shepherd or the more purist (and technically less dazzling) Jonny Lang, and his better-conceived originals (Colour & Shape, the wonderful Miss You Hate You) stand up under any circumstance -- but again, so what? Didn't listeners just buy their studio versions a few months ago? Yes, there's the additional benefit of extended jamming and incendiary guitar soloing to expand upon their themes, but suffice to say that this set need only be sought out by Bonamassa fanatics, or, in the event that they've yet to hear the studio version, first timers, too -- why not?

Water For Your SoulWater For Your Soul is a culmination in Joss Stone's travels in sound, demonstrating how the teen soul prodigy has blossomed into an artist of style and substance. This is an album that pulses with the liquid groove of reggae, dazzles with the mix and match sonic adventure of hip hop, shimmers with the exotic sounds of world music and delivers the emotional belt of R&. Most of the songs for Water For Your Soul had been written and demoed before Joss's Total World Tour began but widening horizons convinced her to completely rethink and recut the record. The sound expanded to include Indian tabla, Bengali lute, Bansuri flute, African and Asian percussion, plus gospel choirs, New Orleans horns and full orchestra. After various experiments, abandoned and revisited sessions, the final album was more or less completed in a 10 day frenzy, with strings being recorded in London, percussion in Hawaii and Joss pulling it together at her own Home Grown Studios in Devon.1. High On YouSly Stone is a songwriter and record producer, mostly famous for his role as frontman for Sly and the Family Stone. The band played a critical role in the development of soul, funk, rock, and psychedelics in the 1960s and '70s.
Sly Stone was identified as a musical prodigy at a young age. By the time he was seven, Sylvester had already become proficient on the keyboards and by the age of eleven he had mastered the guitar, bass, and drums as well. While still in high school, Sylvester had settled primarily on the guitar and joined a number of high school bands.
The most talented musician I know is Sly Stone, Bootsy Collins told Mojo magazine (March 2002 issue). He's more talented than anybody I ever have seen - he's amazing. I worked with him in Detroit from 1981 to '83, and to see him just fooling around, playing, jamming, is a whole other trip. He's the most amazing musician.
In 1993 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group.
High On You (1975) is the first solo album by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sly Stone. For the most part, Stone performed a large part of the instrumentation for each song on his own by using multi-tracking. The album prominently features vocalist Rudy Love and includes the singles I Get High on You, Le Lo Li and Crossword Puzzle.1. I Get High On You

Russian Orchestral MusicRussian Orchestal Music - Barenboim - Chicago Symphony Orchestra on 180g Import LP
"There is no one quite like Daniel Barenboim today in the music world. General music director of the Berlin State Opera and its orchestra, the Berlin Staatskapelle; principal guest conductor at the Teatro Alla Scala in Milan; formerly music director of the Chicago Symphony and the Orchestre de Paris; for years a conductor at the Bayreuth and Salzburg festivals; a champion of new music since the 1950s; a chamber musician who has performed with every great singer and instrumentalist in half a century, from Gregor Piatigorsky and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to his late wife, the cellist Jacqueline du PrÉ, and the bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff, Mr. Barenboim was a child prodigy who remains, despite a full-time conducting career, a towering figure at the keyboard." - Michael Kimmelman, New York Times
Here, the 2003 Grammy-winner conducts the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in performances of Borodin's Polovtsian Dances, Mussorgsky's Night On The Bald Mountain, and Rimsky-Korssakoff's Russian Easter Overture and Capriccio Espagnol. 180g vinyl pressing from Clearaudio.
"Beautiful though their melodies remain, the "Polovtsian Dances" mean less when, as here, deprived of voices. This is a very animated performance, however, with fine playing by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and first-class recording, everything being absolutely distinct in well-proportioned stereo, and with virtually no tape hiss. Stich points have even more importance than usual in items like those by Rimsky-Korsakov, which are mainly studies in orchestral colour." - Gramophone/1977

Safe As MilkCaptain Beefheart's 1967 debut album Safe As Milk introduced the world to a one-of-a-kind visionary whose unique output had no precedent in contemporary music. Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, filtered the raw influence of the blues and R&B through his own singular musical sensibility and left-field lyrical wordplay, and surrounded himself with some of the most talented and inventive young musicians around. The result was an album that, even in the heady year in which it was released, sounded like nothing else, and the stage for one of rock's most iconoclastic and idiosyncratic careers.
With backup from the first, and perhaps finest, incarnation of Beefheart's legendary Magic Band (including future solo star Ry Cooder on guitar and teenage drum prodigy John "Drumbo" French), and production from future studio superstar Richard Perry, Beefheart unveils his fully-formed sound and vision on such landmark tracks as "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Abba Zaba," "Dropout Boogie," "I'm Glad" and "Electricity" (covered two decades later by Sonic Youth).
Now released by Sundazed Music, this landmark album now sounds the way it was meant to sound, thanks to the restoration of Perry's rare original-and, to most fans, superior-mono mix, which was later altered by Beefheart's label without the artist's involvement. This definitive edition features authoritative new liner notes by Rolling Stone editor and longtime Beefheart enthusiast David Fricke.
"In mono, Safe As Milk is a powerful, concentrated revelation," Fricke writes, further noting, "Safe As Milk promised comfort, exotic nourishment and rude health-and delivered. Created in a year rich in historic debuts and transformative statements about rock's dynamic and expressive possibilities, Safe As Milk was so far in it was out."1. Sure 'Nuff 'N Yes I Do

Garage Rock! A Collection Of Lost Songs From 1996-1998One day I'm gonna write a book and let everybody know how to do it; seems there's a lot of people around who want to see if I can prove it! I've been a rock prodigy since the age of 20 and my proof, my proof is RIGHT NOW! Danko Jones have never been a band that sounded the least bit short on confidence, and those lines from Make You Mine confirm these guys had the sweat and the attitude years before they landed a record deal. Garage Rock! A Collection of Lost Songs from 1996-1998 consists of rough demos Danko Jones cut during their first two years of existence, before making their debut album, Born a Lion, in 1999. If this stuff sounds raw and scrappy -- especially the nine tunes from a four-track session somewhere in Toronto -- the trio already feels tight and boasts attitude to spare, with namesake guitarist and vocalist Jones spitting fire and laying out a potent array of downstrokes, while bassist John Calabrese and drummer Atom Willard hold down the beats while keeping the songs in fourth gear at all times. Ultimately, Garage Rock! sounds like a less precise version of Danko Jones as we know them today, but despite the lower fidelity and relatively simpler attack (which is still pretty furious by the standards of most bands), it sounds like they knew what they wanted and how to do it on day one, and the real task was getting their skills on par with their ambitions. Danko Jones are as tough and forceful as they want to be in 2014, but Garage Rock! confirms they could write great songs and raise hell long before that, and they were a blast right out of the gate.

Imagene Peise - Atlas Eets ChristmasATLAST EETS CHRISTMAS was previously released in a very limited physical quantity on CD only under the pseudonym Imagene Peise (with a sticker that read Love Is The Answer - Merry Christmas From The Flaming Lips 2007). The pseudonym Imagene Peise is a John Lennon-esque spelling of Imagine Peace, ala Lennon's wonsaponatime, and likewise the album title sounds-out At last, it's Christmas. The alias credits are similarly punning: Imagene Peise - Piano Ominog Bangh - Laughing/Crying Glider Synthesizer Shineyu Bhupal - Drones, Sitar, and Baritone Tambura.
From the Flaming Lips' presumably vast vault of curiosities comes Atlas Eets Christmas, a psych-jazz piano album that originally appeared in a very limited run under the pseudonym Imagene Peise during the 2007 holiday season. Billed as a lost album by a mysterious young Iraqi piano prodigy name Peise who committed suicide in 1978, the album plays like the soundtrack to some sort of unearthed educational filmstrip where science meets Santa.
The same could be said about much of the Lips' more experimental output, which does include other Yuletide offerings, most notably the soundtrack to their 2008 film Christmas on Mars. Almost entirely instrumental and buried under the weight of a fabricated faux-vinyl crackle, Atlas frames their lovely piano arrangements of such classics as Winter Wonderland, Do You Hear What I Hear?, and White Christmas with buzzing sitars, spacy electronic noises, distant synths, and the band's hallmark Mellotron drones.
The result is a warmly intended yet moon-cold Christmas album that is still surprisingly pleasant. Although Wayne Coyne does make his presence known singing lead on the Vince Guaraldi-esque title cut (most likely through an old telephone from his home office on Mars), this largely seems to be the baby of multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd, whose graceful piano playing makes up the bulk of this unusual venture.1. Silver KobaltIn between work for Björk, The Cinematic Orchestra and Anoushka Shankar, the prodigious Hang player and percussionist Manu Delago has inked a deal with Tru Thoughts to release his own new album, 'Silver Kobalt'. The ambitious LP draws lines from pop to the avant-garde.
Aged just 30, Manu Delago is the world's leading Hang player (with 5 million YouTube views for his DIY performance video "Mono Desire") and possesses equally virtuosic skills as a percussionist and drummer alongside ever maturing instincts as a songwriter and producer. The accessible yet startlingly original sound of 'Silver Kobalt' draws on the experience and ideas built up by the London based Austrian native across a high-flying and diverse career to date. From overachieving teenaged rock bands, through extensive classical training; from his exploits at the cutting edge of art pop as the lynchpin of Björk's band, to a London Symphony Orchestra commission which saw him playfully subverting their expectations; this endlessly curious artist has been honing his own style rich in melody, wit and invention.
The title, 'Silver Kobalt', plays on the strangely linked themes of magnets, goblins and human behaviour. Throwing a pair of small magnets in the air one day, Delago recorded their frantic, thrumming sound for the track "Plus Minus"; he also experimented with the detuning effect of a magnet on the Hang. Magnet fascination deepening, he read that some rare elements are permanently magnetised, of which one is cobalt. Then, up popped the pleasing story that cobalt was actually named after the German word for 'goblin' ('kobold') by hapless silver miners who suspected little kobolds had taken all the silver and left them with this substance. Further reading revealed also that all humans contain cobalt which we need to survive. "I really enjoyed this string of information", he says. "As well as this fun idea of little goblins within us, it really struck a chord because I had been thinking a lot about attraction and repulsion - what makes people magnetically drawn to some things, away from others - and that is a strong theme in the music. 'Silver Kobalt' tied it all together."
Tying together the many sonic threads is co-producer Matt Robertson (Björk, The Prodigy, The Streets, Bat For Lashes), following his work on Delago's acclaimed 2013 LP 'Bigger Than Home', the record on which he began to truly develop his current sound. This is a sound that revolves around the unique timbre of the Hang, but encompasses much more, from acoustic percussion, bassoon, piano and chimes to multi-layered beats and a variety of synths.
The hypnotic, nursery rhyme-like Hang melody of lead single "Disgustingly Beautiful" feat. Isa Kurz opens the album; the affecting vocals of Kurz (also the pianist and violinist on record and in the live outfit Manu Delago Handmade) ride a bass-heavy undercurrent, with added beats from Grammy nominated producer j.viewz. On the spiky yet melodically catchy "Plus Minus", the aforementioned magnet theme is extended into the composition, with two main lines that are pulled together and pushed apart. "Drumheart feat. Anil Sebastian" is pristine bassy pop lifted onto another plane by the haunting, androgynous vocals of the up-and-coming singer.
Stealthily moving into a fascinating instrumental section, "Down to the Summit" (which, unusually, uses the Indian drone instrument Surpeti for harmony) leads to the punchy, subby Hang sound and four-handed piano tinkering of "Wandering Around" and on to the joyful "Simon is Psychling", which calls to mind a DJ with speakers on a bike, circling a big field, one lap bringing a bassoon solo, another an industrial noise-fest. Restoring calm, "Sun In The North feat. Isa Kurz" is a potent lyrical snapshot from a day on the beach on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, its rhythms inspired by playing with Indian musicians there. Cobalt gets its glory in the shape-shifting "Chemical Reaction feat. Rahel", and the lovelorn "Dearest" was conceived on tour in Australia where Delago captured the fairytale vocals of celebrated Australian folk singer Katie Noonan. "Almost Thirty", in Delago's words, "draws a bow from Eurotrash Dance Music to Austrian folk music, with some brainy immature rhythm ejaculations in between"; a banger that skirts the border between strange-town and club-land, it is a thrilling way to see out both his third decade on Earth and the album.
Having been given his first drum kit aged two, also learning the accordion and piano in childhood, Manu Delago was a professional performer by his teens, but it was in 2003, when he began playing the Hang - an enchanting new sound sculpture from Switzerland - that he discovered his passion for writing music. On graduating from the university Mozarteum in Innsbruck, he moved to London and studied at Guildhall School of Music & Drama and Trinity College of Music. With this pedigree, the lessons learned from collaborating with his heroes, and influences from The Prodigy to Bon Iver, Michael Jackson to Stravinsky and Beyonce to Rage against the Machine, his music is as impeccably realised as it is impossible to classify. Delago has featured heavily in the world's media, having toured on six continents and played festivals including Shambala, Green Man, Haldern Pop, Reeperbahn, Eurosonic and Popfest Vienna.1. Purple Snow: Forecasting The Minneapolis SoundIn the late 1970s, a peculiar sound began bubbling up from the land of 10,000 lakes. Buried beneath 50 solid inches of annual snow, Minneapolis made a Sound quite different than what the pop world foresaw. It issued forth as a slick, black, technologically advanced fusion, poised to storm the charts. Never known for sizable African-American populations, the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in fact harbored a tight-knit community of
musicians working feverishly through the late '70s and early '80s toward a radical manipulation of American dance music, coating futuristic funk with the glamorous sheen of guitar rock. Synthetic ebony and ivory met electricity, with sexed-up results
sent shockingly across the pop heavens like
Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound-the Numero Group's breathlessly anticipated 50th mainline release-chronicles the scene's first steps, false starts, and follow-throughs, sourcing the life's work of known quantities and shadowy
figures alike. In the beginning, there was Purple Haze, whose billing as Haze on two obscure
albums left the color purple to their city's incipient sound. PepÉ Willie's 94 East project
gave local prodigy Prince Rogers Nelson an early chance to row along with the crew. From
there, the story courses past Jimmy Jam Harris' extroverted Philly throwback Mind & Matter
collective, to Terry Lewis and Flyte Tyme, flamboyant precursor to Morris Day's The Time.
Unearthing basement demos by Prince's childhood sidekick/departed bassist AndrÉ Cymone,
plus deep cuts from legend-about-town Alexander O'Neal, Numero 050 gathers relentlessly
as the sprawling, nonfiction prequel to Purple Rain's cultural takeover.
Surpassing 30,000 words, our hardbound, full-color book companion to Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound is a gorgeous, exhaustively detailed, and insight-rich guided tour across two hours of music and a decade of North Star history. Inside, dozens of supporting characters and combos seed clouds for the meteoric rise of a genre formerly known mostly as Prince's-not to mention unheard product from his top collaborators
and fiercest competitors. In game-changing sound and image-rich splendor, Purple Snow: Forecasting
the Minneapolis Sound clears a crowded stage, ushering in unsung Twin Cities future-funk talent, to bask for a spotlit moment, out of that persistent violet shadow, and to shine.1. 94 EAST If You See Me

REDI-BUT-4974xCarolina Eyck & Christopher Tarnow
Improvisations For Theremin And PianoAn album as unique as it is hauntingly beautiful, this collection of improvised pieces by theremin prodigy Carolina Eyck and fellow Leipzig-based pianist Christopher Tarnow is the only album of its kind. Recorded in close collaboration with producer Allen Farmelo, these tracks truly challenge the accepted rules of any genre. The music carries the harmonic sophistication of classical, the quasi-atonal sensibilities of Coltrane and an unexpected sense of wonder and play.
Yet there is a darkness that lurks between the notes, a haunted sensibility informed by the production team's near miss of a lethal pedestrian-car accident that killed a young boy just days before the sessions. It's a feeling they couldn't shake, and it lingers in the music, adding depth and power to Eyck and Tarnow's virtuosic command of their instruments.
Eyck studied Theremin from the young age of 7 with Lydia Kavina, who developed the early technique with the now legendary student of Leon Theremin himself, Clara Rockmore. By age 14 Eyck had developed her own technique, which she published at age 17 in one of the most influential instruction books on the instrument, The Art of Playing the Theremin. Her technique is generally regarded as the most advanced in the world.
Farmelo's Producer's Notes provide both context for the theremin itself as well as insight into the way this team intentionally broke down the roles of composer, instrumentalist and producer in order to arrive at an egalitarian collaboration that would result in music borne directly from Eyck's own instinctual sense of her unique instrument. Rarely does one hear a performer from within the classical tradition play with such expressive freedom, and the team decided to leave all the music unedited in order to preserve that quality.
The broader goals of this album are to help free the theremin from the confines of stereotypes built up through Hollywood's sci-fi and horror soundtracks, as well as through the more recent adoption of the instrument into the noisier side of electronic music. Improvisations for Theremin and Piano presents the instrument's most virtuosic performer in an exceptionally candid and heartfelt recording.1. Earth and Sky

For TrueSince the release of their Grammy-nominated 2010 debut album, Backatown, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue have grown creatively while winning hordes of new fans performing nonstop on five continents. Their new Verve Forecast album, For True, offers substantive proof of their explosive growth, further refining the signature sound Troy Trombone Shorty Andrews has dubbed Supafunkrock.
The band: Mike Ballard on bass, Pete Murano on guitar, Joey Peebles on drums, Dwayne Williams on percussion, Dan Oestreicher on baritone sax and Tim McFatter on tenor sax, stirs together old-school New Orleans jazz, funk and soul, laced with hard-rock power chords and hip-hop beats, and they've added some tangy new ingredients on For True as they keep pushing the envelope, exploring new musical territory.
Andrews wrote or co-wrote all 14 tracks on the new album, including collaborating with the legendary Lamont Dozier on Encore, while this time playing as much trumpet as trombone, as well as organ, drums, piano, keys, synth bass and percussion. Indeed, he played every part on the swaying, Latin-tinged Unc. He's also come into his own as a singer, honoring the hallowed legacy of the great soul men of the 1960s and '70s. Like its predecessor, the new album turns on a rare combination of virtuosity and high-energy, party-down intensity.
Among the special guests are longtime NOLA cohorts like Ivan and Cyril Neville (who bring their trademark sound to Nervis); Galactic's Ben Ellman, reprising his producer's role on Backatown (percussion on opener Buckjump, harmonica on Big 12) and Stanton Moore (drumming on Lagniappe Part 1 and Part 2); bounce rapper 5th Ward Weebie and the Rebirth Brass Band (who team up on Buckjump) and Troy's longtime friend Charles Smith (who adds percussion to the same track).
The album also bears the fruit of more recent relationships Lenny Kravitz (who plays bass on Roses), has the longest-standing bond with Andrews, discovering the then-teenage prodigy in 2005 and taking him on tour with his band. Kid Rock (whose vocal is featured on Mrs. Orleans) came out to see Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue at an outdoor show early this year in NOLA, and a month later Troy joined the star onstage at Jazz Fest.
Andrews played with Warren Haynes (whose eruptive solo further heats up Encore) at his annual benefit and again at the guitarist's Mahalia Jackson Theatre all-star event during this year's Jazz Fest. Ledisi (who sings on Then There Was You), met Troy at the 2010 Grammys, later came out to see him in New Orleans and was later featured in a segment for the landmark Red Hot + New Orleans at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, for which Andrews served as musical director. His relationship with Jeff Beck (check out his blistering solo on Do to Me) has also blossomed since the guitar legend came to Troy's late-night post-Jazz Fest show at Tipitina's in 2010.1. Buckjump
