"Nonagon infinity opens the door," sings Stu Mackenzie, frontman of Australian psych-rockers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. It turns out, though, that once the door's open, it never closes. That's because the Melbourne septet has ingeniously crafted what may be the world's first infinitely looping LP. Each of the nine, complex, blistering tracks on 'Nonagon Infinity' seamlessly flows into the next, with the final song linking straight back into the top of the opener like a sonic mobius strip. It's exactly the kind of ambitious vision that prompted Rolling Stone to dub the band "one of the most compelling collectives of art-rock experimentalists in recent years." But far from a simple conceptual experiment, the album is both an exhilarating shot of adrenaline and a remarkable feat of craftsmanship, the result of painstaking planning and an eye for detail years in the making.
The roots of 'Nonagon Infinity' stretch back to 2014, when King Gizzard recorded their critically acclaimed album "I'm In Your Mind Fuzz," which was hailed by Pitchfork as "dense, intricately crafted, and most importantly, powerful."
"We actually wanted to do this with 'Mind Fuzz,' but it just didn't work," explains Mackenzie. "We ended up writing songs that needed to be on that record but didn't connect to the others, so we had to abandon the idea, but the seeds were sown."
To an outsider, it may have seemed like the band had completely given up on the concept, as the ever-prolific group quickly followed 'Mind Fuzz' with two more records in 2015, 'Quarters'-described by The Guardian as "the neon intersection of DIY psych and 1960s beach pop"-and the stripped-down 'Paper Mache Dream Balloon,' which earned praise from NPR to Stereogum. The truth, though, was that King Gizzard was honing in on the 'Nonagon Infinity' material the whole time, test-driving various tracks in their explosive live shows to prep for the monumental task of stitching them all together into one searing, multi-movement epic.
"We really wanted to focus on things that felt good live," says Mackenzie. "We'd grab a little riff here or a little groove there, and we'd jam on them and form songs out of them, which was the opposite of 'Paper Mache,' where we were making songs in an acoustic, classic-songwriting kind of way. I wanted to have an album where all these riffs and grooves just kept coming in and out the whole time, so a song wasn't just a song, it was part of a loop, part of this whole experience where it feels like it doesn't end and doesn't need to end."
Recorded at Daptone Studios in Brooklyn, the final result is an intricate and immersive listening experience. Lyrical refrains and musical motifs establish themselves and then submerge beneath the chaos, only to resurface unexpectedly later like familiar companions on a labyrinthine journey. Motorhead-grade riffs give way to King Crimson and Yes-levels of prog complexity, as songs churn through unusual time signatures and shifting rhythms with blunt force, laying waste to everything in their path.
"I wanted it to feel like a horror or sci-fi movie," explains Mackenzie of the album's dark overtones. "The lyrics came as a stream of consciousness, all of these elements just falling out of my head as it was happening."
"Big Fig Wasp" references a particularly macabre insect that must kill itself in order to perpetuate the species, while "Gamma Knife," with its 11/8-time drum solo, is named for a surgical tool that burns cuts into the skin, and "People-Vultures" plays like a sinister film soundtrack. Album opener "Robot Stop" pulls more directly from the band's recent experiences, inspired in part by their relentless work ethic and tour schedule, which has included festival performances at Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Montreux Jazz & Roskilde as well as countless sold out dates in rooms across the USA, UK, Europe and Australia.
"That song's about feeling overworked, like a bit of a robot that's just going to crash and die or something," he says with a laugh. "But you get yourself up and do it again and you robot on and you're alright. It was one of the early ones we wrote for the record, and I think when that song came together, everybody started to feel like were going to actually be able to pull off this never-ending album idea."
To say they pulled it off would be an understatement. The record is a force to be reckoned with on par with the road trains Mackenzie references in the album's final track.
"In the Australian desert, in the outback, there are what's called road trains, which are these massive trucks pulling heaps of carriages that can end up being 50 meters long," he explains. "They drive on the road really, really fast, and they're deadly, with these bars in the front to kill kangaroos and anything else in their path."

New Masses For Squaw PeakNew Masses for Squaw Peak gifts unto us bold, surprising new textures and denser, cheekier ideas and themes. Its packed tight with style: gauze-flange experimentation; jazz-chord death-pop; shifty proto-prog; historical and personal mythologies weaved through its passages. Yet, claustrophobic it is not. New Masses for Squaw Peak is as wide-open of a landscape as its title may suggest. It is also a well-traveled collection of songs: laid to tape in the belly of an abandon Philadelphia textile factory; run through three mixing boards by three separate sets of hands; and ultimately sculpted into its final form by the gentlemen to conjured it in the first place. And oh joy, what conjuring.
Mystics Pharaohs (Masc. Pharaohs) begins with a big, fat wink to Enos Here Come the Warm Jets (a hallmark of Squaw Peak) before descending into its own purply blackhole of dark, dissonant whitefunk. A metallic sonic fog allows guitar stabs and squalls, and the pings of ringleader Nathan Pembertons vocal calls, to hit you twice then thrice, then unravel out into the cosmos. All players here (multi-instrumentalists Josh Martin and Brian Forfa; and drummer John Frank) are using both sides of the brain at every turn, the instinctual, tribal rhythm with which we are born and the semi-learned, nervy way we manipulate that instinct. The instinct that tells us to stay and play inside our comfort zone, and the secret instinct to see what lies just beyond its boundary. Cor-Du-Roi, another standout, is almost perpendicular to Mystics Pharoahs with its shambling, assured pace and melodies all tinny and distant. Its a risky number for Holiday Shores in its maturity and subtle composition. It also just might be their most inspired, beautiful piece to date. We find this kind of maturity and patience again with deep-cut Coming to Shores, an ambient-pop sci-fi wash that almost falls into the new classical phylum.
Pemberton and Martin prove time and again that they share more than just a keyboard table in the live setting; they share an endlessly searching, creative brain. Pembertons jazz keyboards are often interlocked with Martins plinkety-plankety lyrical guitar. On Shadie Spun Gold and in other spots, like pulsing leadoff track Airglow their separately played parts are hocketed to create the larger melody, with notes falling just left of where Steely Dan might drop them (which sounds awesome). Holiday Shores might be prog-rock in the way that Ariel Pink might be prog-rock. Its shape-shifting pop songcraft that will slip from your fingers like a sea cucumber the very second you think you have hold.1. Airglow

Battering RamWith Biff Byford singing as well as he ever has, Paul Quinn and Doug Scarratt making full use of the term 'shredding' with their guitars and the lock-steady rhythm of Nibbs Carter's bass and Nigel Glockler's drums, the future and the past crash together in an ear-scintillatingly engaging, raucous, melodic-yet-classically heavy ten songs collection which will instantly be hailed as a Saxon classic. The title track, with its delectable twin guitar assault heralding the album's commencement, gives the listener an instant crack around the chops, whilst traditionalists will be delighted to hear such a perfect marriage of old, classic Saxon with the newer, fresher invective in such riff-fronted fare as "Destroyer" and "Stand Your Ground", but there are still moments of space and exploration which fans will love. "This one's a natural progression from Sacrifice," says Byford, "There's a bit less rock'n'roll and a bit more 'heavy' on it. We wanted to keep focused on a style rather than moving around too much." Produced by Andy Sneap (Megadeth, Testament, Exodus Accept) at his Backstage Recording Studios in rural Derbyshire, Saxon were able to hone in and whittle down any excess, finding the sonic space and balance to let Battering Ram's riffs and melodies get the necessary space to scream front and center, Sneap bringing a crispness to the sound which evokes memories of the early '80s without for one moment sounding dated. "Yes, Andy has been in charge of everything with this album, I keep on overview of it all, but he's done a great job and we're both pleased with the results. We have a great partnership." Lyrically, Battering Ram covers a variety of social situations, from the screaming fans who rage at the gig barriers ("Battering Ram") to the inequalities of taxation ("Tax 'Till You Drop"), as well as engaging in some good old fashioned myth ("The Devil's Footprint" - a 200 year old tale of people waking up in winter snowfall to see unexplained hoof prints which they followed, looking for an answer in vain). "When I'm writing lyrics I like to switch back and forth between complex things, reality and rock'n'roll," says Byford, "I thought the whole folklore behind "The Devil's Footprint" made it great material for a metal song, being that it's both historic and mythical. "With "Queen of Hearts" I wanted to write something around Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, and it's about the chess game that happens in the story. I wanted it to have prog-feeling in the way of its ambiance and mood. Then you have songs like "Destroyer" and "Hard and Fast" which are '80s inspired songs with that modern slant on it. I'm a big fan of Marvel comics, and I wanted to write a song around the character Destroyer, and with "Hard and Fast" it's as the title suggests, about driving fast! I do like to tie the lyric into the song, so if it's going to be a song about driving fast, well, it has to be a fast, hard song!" There is also the album's closing cut, haunting, gripping, melancholic tale of the First World War, "The Kingdom of The Cross", where a poem unfurls the feelings and horrors which comprised this most brutal of global conflicts. "This year is the centenary of the end of the First World War. Nigel had a piece of music which he played on a synthesizer for a couple of years that I really liked. We had an actor (and singer), David Bower from the band Hell, read the poem and I sang the choruses. I didn't want it to be typical Saxon, so it is just keyboards, bass, me and Dave." Wonderfully uncompromising, with Battering Ram Saxon have once again established their rightly-venerated credentials as Kings and vanguards of heavy metal music.LP1

Psychic Temple IIIt may seem hard to imagine a place where indie rock visionaries like Sufjan Stevens and Castanets' Ray Raposa could meld minds with the genius of Brian Wilson, where death metal pioneer Paul Masvidal might wield his legendary six-string chops on a blissed-out soul ballad, where adventurous young jazz players like Kris Tiner and Devin Hoff share credit with Mars Volta keyboardist Ikey Owens and singer/songwriter Aaron Roche.
Long Beach composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist (not to mention truck driver) Chris Schlarb has not only imagined such a place but has now made it manifest for a second time. Released by Asthmatic Kitty, Psychic Temple II is a labor of love, envisioned by Schlarb to bring his most far-ranging inspirations to life - as he puts it, "a dream ensemble that could never actually exist." The ensemble's sophomore release was painstakingly constructed over more than a year with the cooperation of some of the most progressive musical minds from a staggering variety of genres.
"I love interesting juxtapositions, where you bring together people from different communities," Schlarb says. He cites iconoclastic predecessors like Bill Laswell's ever-changing group Material, which once brought together a young Whitney Houston with jazz legend Archie Shepp and future Soundgarden and Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Michael Beinhorn to cover a song by Hugh Hopper of English prog-rock pioneers Soft Machine. On 2010's Psychic Temple, Schlarb assembled a 29-member ensemble that included Minutemen bassist Mike Watt, vocalist Julianna Barwick, and pianist Mick Rossi of the Philip Glass Ensemble.
"It seems like a crazy combination of people," Schlarb says, "but they're all just musicians. Why not bring them all together? It may not always work, but it's always worth reaching further."
Psychic Temple II reaches beyond the long-form experiments of its predecessor for a more tightly focused yet conceptually dense collection whose songs are no less exploratory for their briefer durations. "I never see the point in continuing to regurgitate," Schlarb says of the new album's unique direction. "What was natural at that time would now feel contrived. I have to keep moving forward."
Schlarb also includes three cover songs by composers who share his boundary-demolishing mindset: Joe Jackson's "Steppin' Out," Frank Zappa's "Sofa No. 2," and Brian Wilson's "'Til I Die," a gorgeous, lesser-known Beach Boys song that features vocals by Sufjan Stevens, Castanets' Ray Raposa, and Cryptacize's Nedelle Torrisi.
Psychic Temple had its origins in Create (!), a large improvising ensemble with which Schlarb used to perform. The free-form group would often incorporate multiple drummers, a concept that Schlarb decided to pursue in a more composition-oriented setting. No matter how much Psychic Temple mutates from track to track, the rhythmic possibilities of its two drummers (in this case, Tabor Allen and Andrew Pompey) remain intact.
Schlarb's imaginative leaps are evidenced from the outset of Psychic Temple II, on the intoxicating opening track, "Seventh House." Featuring the sinuous vocals of Sarah Negahdari, who recently served as touring bassist for Silversun Pickups, the song weaves together lyrical and musical references to Neil Young's "Will To Love," to the Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers album Pisces, and to Sheena Easton's notorious Prince-penned pop hit "Sugar Walls."
Then there's "The Starry King Hears Laughter" and "She Is the Golden World," two songs that pay simultaneous homage to poet William Blake and jazz legend Bill Evans; or "Solo in Place," Schlarb's attempt to filter classic soul through his own "weird prism," a missing link between the Isley Brothers and the Alan Parsons Project that features guitar wizard Paul Masvidal of the death metal bands Death and Cynic.
Despite such a mind-blowing array of talent from the farthest reaches of the musical spectrum, Psychic Temple II is a surprisingly cohesive album, a testament to Schlarb's clear controlling vision. "One of the fundamental flaws of modern music is the idea of the record as a pastiche," he says. "With hip-hop and R&R records starting in the '90s, you had ten tracks with ten different producers so every track sounded completely different. There was no aesthetic where you could just put on a record and listen to it beginning to end. I admire people who are control freaks."
Schlarb has wielded control over a number of vastly different projects himself. The New York Observer called his debut solo album, Twilight & Ghost Stories, "40 minutes of avant-garde bliss," while Interoceans, recorded with experimental jazz duo I Heart Lung, was chosen by NPR as one of the top five jazz albums of 2008. He composed the score for Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren's video game Nightsky and has received grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and Meet the Composer. BonesOn The Delta Saints' new album, Bones, their first for Loud & Proud Records, the Nashville-based band have stripped their roots/blues sound down to its essence, having rearranged the elements into something uniquely their own. Steeped in rock 'n' roll's building blocks - country, R&B, soul and gospel - The Delta Saints' second full-length effort explores influences like Jack White, The Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses and Led Zeppelin. Producer/engineer/mixer and Third Man Records alum, Eddie Spear [Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Neil Young] provided a ghostly, psychedelic atmosphere at Nashville's Sputnik Sound studios, yielding a sound unlike anything they have created before.
"We got to the point where what we were recording and playing had veered from what we were listening to and loving on our turntables, which can lead to discontent," said Louisiana-born singer/lyricist Ben Ringel, who co-founded the band almost eight years ago with fellow Belmont University student, Kansas native bassist David Supica. Soon after, they were joined by Tennessee-bred guitarist Dylan Fitch and later, after a health scare with the band's former harmonica player, enlisted Louisville resident and keyboardist, Nate Kremer, who was added to the lineup only two weeks before a two month long European tour.
Taking a novel approach of writing songs spontaneously in the studio, The Delta Saints were challenged to create in the moment and as a result, Bones is their most adventurous effort yet. The album is a collection of eclectic songs, beginning with The White Stripes-meets-Led Zeppelin fuzz-toned garage-rock blast of "Sometimes I Worry." The spare, spooky strains of "Butte la Rose" tell the band's tale of a Louisiana town purposely flooded and displaced five years ago to save New Orleans. The Grapes of Wrath drama of "Dust," based on Ringel's grandfather, an East Kansas farmer, builds to a primal wail at nature with a stunning coda in which Dylan Fitch's guitar drops out and Kremer's B3 organ provides the climax. The title track, "Bones" features hoodoo organ riffs and African-influenced trance music, which came from listening to the Sahara desert African groove of Niger's Tuareg guitarist Omara "Bombino" Moctar and Mali's Tinariwen. The grindhouse honky-tonk chain gang chants of "Heavy Hammer" celebrates the work ethic in no uncertain terms, a call for unity in the wake of Ringel's frustration about getting stuck in the rat race and feeling trapped by some of life's mundane tasks. "Berlin," the first song they recorded after adding Nate on keys, started out as an instrumental penned in the title city while on tour. It eventually metamorphosed into a country twang intro and a prog-rock jam. Bones is a complete work veering between despair and apocalyptic dread.
"We're trying to push ourselves forward to do something more modern, but at the same time incorporating where we come from," explained Ringel.
"It was incredible to be able to write a song on the spot and immediately hear what it sounded like," added Supica. "It was a great way to capture the magic right when you come up with an idea, preserving that raw element. We were used to playing a song for months on the road before we recorded it. Still, on the flip side, it was absolutely terrifying to sit in the studio watching the clock tick and waiting for a song to come out. That's where (producer) Ed Spear came into play; he was so good at keeping us pointed in the right direction."
"This record was made out of both necessity and desire. We needed to be fulfilled and surprised by music again, and we also needed to fulfill that love of writing and recording again."
The Delta Saints have independently released two EPs (2010's Pray On and A Bird Called Angola), a full-length album (2012's Death Letter Jubilee) and a live disc (2014's Live at Exit/In). They have spent the last eight years touring the US averaging almost 200 shows per year, organically growing their audience, fan by fan, city by city. Major appearances include several festivals including Wakarusa, Summer Camp, Harvest, The Ride, Summerfest and The Simple Man Cruise. A testament to their mixed appeal, they have opened for such diverse acts as Blackberry Smoke, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Taj Mahal, Dickey Betts and Michael Franti & Spearhead.
The Delta Saints have also have a large international fan base having toured Europe a total of six times, selling out countless venues and playing more than 200 shows in Spain, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Germany, as well as several festivals in Holland (Moulin Blues, Ribs and Blues), Belgium (Gevarenwinkel) and Germany (Grolsch Blues Fest).
With all that they've accomplished as a hard-working group on their own, The Delta Saints have earned their graduation to industry veteran Tom Lipsky's Loud & Proud Records (which has been the home of Rush, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS, Robert Plant, Rob Zombie, Lenny Kravitz and The String Cheese Incident, among others).
"Don't look so tired, my dear," sings Ringel in Bones' closing track, "Berlin," echoing the band's progress. "We may be bruised, but the day is almost here."
"It's hard to see progress when you're in the middle of things," said Supica about The Delta Saints' ambitions. "We try to take stock every six months or so and look back from where we've come, from eating at McDonald's and sleeping on people's floors to staying at a Motel 6 and graduating to La Quinta. We mark our success by the hotel chain where we're staying. When we get to Marriott, we know we've made it."

Long running Grammy-nominated extreme melodic power metal band DragonForce are set to release their seventh album, 'Reaching Into Infinity.' Once again recorded with Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia, Soilwork), the producer extraordinaire who helmed the UK-based group's now three-year-old previous record 'Maximum Overload,' it will be available via Metal Blade Records in the United States.
'Reaching Into Infinity' introduces Italian drummer Gee Anzalone, who joined the band for their first ever 'best-of' collection, 'Killer Elite: The Hits, The Highs, The Vids', released in 2016. It's the third DragonForce album to feature frontman Marc Hudson, whose reign at the mic now enters its sixth year.
Musically speaking, 'Reaching Into Infinity' continues where DragonForce left off with 'Maximum Overload', the band's faster material becoming even faster still, while the melodic parts head even further in that particular direction. The band offers no apologies for the inclusion of a 1980s rock-style ballad entitled 'Silence' and, at the other end of the spectrum, there's even an 11-minute multi-tempoed monster called 'The Edge Of The World'.
"'The Edge Of The World' is DragonForce's longest ever song," says Li proudly. "In some ways, this album is more epic than anything we've done before."'The Edge Of The World' is extremely ambitious, channeling growled vocals from Hudson and fusing them with a stunning arrangement that twists and turns like the proverbial dragon's tail. The 'Force go prog-rock, anyone?
"Why not?" Li responds. "Marc's favorite style of music is prog, and I'm a massive fan of Dream Theater, so there's an element of that going on. With each album that we make, the band reveals more and more if its influences, constantly adding to what we can do."
"We have proven that playing fast is something we were good at, so this time I wanted to bring even more diversity into our music," Fred elaborates. "It's great to challenge ourselves instead of staying in a comfort zone, and I really wanted to experiment with Marc's vocals. I think people are going to be surprised at his brutality."
The title corresponds with the album's highly impressive sleeve art, which features a dragon bursting through a wormhole into a hi-tech, futuristic cityscape.
"The dragon represents us - DragonForce - and a form of music that's been around for a very long time, emerging into an outside world that's infinitely more crazy and chaotic than it was ten years ago," Li explains, using considerable understatement. "Everyone is saying that there's no future and there's a lot of fear and uncertainty, especially for younger people, but our music is an escape from it all."
The bulk of the album was laid down at Fascination Street Studios in Sweden, though additional parts were cut in studios around the UK and in California. They had to be - "Since 'Killer Elite' it's been non-stop for us," Li comments.
Adds Leclercq: "We flew out, played a festival, headed back into the studio, then went back out again. It was very intense and tiring. I obviously played bass but also a lot of rhythm guitar, electric and acoustic, and lost my temper a few times - I think we all did at some point because we wanted to deliver nothing but the best."
Expect many of these songs to become firm live favorites, particularly the super-fast 'Midnight Madness' (feted as the album's second video track), when DragonForce hit the road again. As usual, their itinerary will take them to the four corners of the world.LP 1

Blues masterpieces of the era still resonate today as Paul Butterfield and Co. foretold with their classic signature tunes like Born In Chicago, Look Over Yonders Wall, Mellow Down Easy and the mammoth blues prog-rocker East West. With the superstar talents that made up this band over the years, it was not uncommon to hear radio stations play entire sides of their revolutionary albums during the dawn of FM and underground radio.

The results of the poll are a fine mix of old and new--with slightly more emphasis on the modern--ranging from the bracing Fum, Fum, Fum, a traditional Catalan carol, to Tchaikovsky's Faeries from The Nutcracker. Mannheim Steamroller imbues this beloved song with an almost militaristic edge, grounding it with an ominous tuba that gives the usually fey Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies an edgy tension. Winter Wonderland is a spectacular work, bordering on prog rock, as if Emerson, Lake & Palmer had re-formed to whip up a winter blizzard gone amok.
