    In the winter of 1967, a psychedelic-garage-punk band from Woodland Hills, California, arrived in Europe for what would be their first and last tour of the continent. On the strength of their hit single I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, the band was welcomed with open arms by European rock fans as well as British rock royalty - they smoked out with Hendrix, partied with Brian Jones and Keith Moon, and hung out in the studio with the Beatles - but were also subjected to harassment and ridicule over the fact that their homeland was at war in Vietnam. On the last stop of the tour someone pushed the record button and this artifact is the result. Stockholm '67 finds the Electric Prunes at the height of the powers. Over-amplified and fuzzed to the max, the 'Prunes here are explosive, noisy and wild. This recording proves that the Electric Prunes deserve to be ranked alongside the very best bands of their era.

    Why Pick On Me

    The Standells' key albums for the Tower label (Dirty Water, Why Pick On Me, and Try It) perfectly bottled a rebellious wave of sound sweeping across Mid-1960's teen clubs, radio playlists and record racks. Starting with the genre-defining, proto-punk smash "Dirty Water", through a series of equally memorable underdog anthems ("Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White," "Why Pick on Me") and obscenities (the banned "Try It"), the Standells left an indelible mark on their era. Those three Tower albums are a veritable feast of three chord, fuzz-drenched, Vox Organ-driven "squares"-repellant.


    For their second Tower album, Why Pick On Me, the Standells received a significant sonic boost with the move to American Recording Company. Legendary engineer Richie Podolor cut the best sounding records of the era; from the Standells, Chocolate Watchband, and Electric Prunes to Steppenwolf and Three Dog Night. The drum tracks on this album are simply not to be believed, the bass drum sound possibly registering on the Richter scale. Here the Standells build on their strengths with tough originals from producer Ed Cobb, equally-hard driving outside material ("Black Hearted Woman," "Mainline"), and notably, the emergence of Larry Tamblyn as a songwriter (his "Mr. Nobody" arguably the album's highlight).

    When unassuming young Orkney music-maker Erland Cooper picked up his guitar and travelled the length of the country to play a show in London's
    Notting Hill, little did he know that a chance encounter with musical veteran Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good The Bad & The Queen, and Gorillaz)
    would be the start of a unique songwriting friendship. Together they formed Erland & The Carnival and now, nearly a decade later, arrives Closing Time -
    the band's third, most accomplished album yet.


    Opening a new chapter, Closing Time is an understated, inward looking collection of songs that feature stunning string arrangements and Erland's
    impassioned vocals at centre stage. But rather than the modern folk adaptations of traditional songs, children's poems, and ancient literature on the
    band's earlier albums or the pair's recent conceptual folklore project The Magnetic North, this time the band tell tales of a more personal nature.
    "Previously we didn't know what we wanted to say or how to say it and would use stories and direct references to help us get to a place we could feel
    secure," admits Simon. Erland adds; "in making this record we discarded an album's worth of material that sounded like the first two albums. We wanted
    to make something different - doing another Jackson C Frank cover wasn't an option."


    Above all, Closing Time is the very first time the listener can truly hear the wholly collaborative process that is Erland & The Carnival. Lyrical and musical
    duties have always been shared, yet here the combined creativity of the pair's working friendship is only solidified with Erland taking a more 'hands on'
    approach to production. The string arrangements, brought about by the album's unashamed twisted and selfish love song 'Quiet Love', were scored by
    Simon before being recorded by a quartet in his living room later that week.


    Recorded in Damon Albarn's studio13 with previous Erland & The Carnival engineer Steve Sedgewick and mixed by London Grammar producer Tim Bran
    with Paul Weller guesting on two tracks. Despite creating more than 40 songs in the process of writing the album ("Some of the song melodies and ideas
    on this may have even been written when I was 21 to be honest. 'Hopeless' certainly was," admits Erland), it was a brilliantly spontaneous and productive
    time taking just over 3 days to come to fruition. "We learnt to be incredibly disciplined" tells Simon. "It feels like pruning a tree - when you cut away the
    needless and weaker branches, what you get is something much fresher and stronger coming through."

    Ghostly International presents Xeno & Oaklander's new full-length album Topiary.
    In their fifth album to date, the Brooklyn based girl / boy electronic duo explores
    themes of arcana and electricity.


    The title 'Topiary' refers to a highly ornamental hand sculpted garden such as
    Levins Hall in Cumbria UK or the stately grounds of Versailles. Pruned and
    fashioned into forms, shrubs and trees are turned into semblances of abstract and
    natural shapes - nature imitating nature, much to the delight of dreamers and
    romantics. The band, Sean McBride and Liz Wendelbo, views the album as a
    journey through the manifold hallways of electro magnetic architecture and
    enchanted landscapes.


    The sound of Topiary is rich and deep; like a 60s French Pop album shot through a
    prism of late renaissance chamber music. Liz Wendelbo's voice seems haunted by
    ghosts of YÉYÉ girls, Françoise Hardy's whispers set against a glorious backdrop
    of blaring synthetic horns and organs.


    Known for their signature analog synth sound, Xeno & Oaklander have been
    quoted as referring to their synths as elemental: fire is what powers energy,
    voltage and electricity. Electro magnetism is electric energy, like lightning in the
    sky: here it is controlled by switches and buttons, shaped by filters and
    envelopes, and travels through patch cables and modules to create synthetic
    creations of classical instruments: pianos, brass, guitars, percussions. The result is
    orchestral and textured.


    A room - a sound studio is often referred to as 'the room': it has a sound, a history,
    and ghosts in its machines. Xeno & Oaklander's new album was recorded at the
    Tom Tom Club / Talking Heads' Clubhouse Studio deep in the woods of New
    England. Known for their analog synthesizer sound, Xeno & Oaklander plugged in
    their entire arsenal of synths into the Clubhouse array of analog outboard gear.
    They used their signature style of recording: the album was recorded as a live
    session, but this time in a bracketed amount of time and in one place. Everything
    was arranged, recorded and mixed in a month at the Clubhouse. Liz and Sean
    were intent on creating a sense of dimensionality with this recording by exploring
    the idea of 3D in sound: left, right, back and front as well as up and down. Room
    tone is present in the recordings themselves, so that 'the room' is present in the
    songs, and so that there is a trace of the space in the sound itself: making this a
    unique recording. The vinyl and Cd are mixed seamlessly like a constant pulse of
    electricity.


    Metaphysics, the study of being, time and space is a long time fascination for
    Xeno & Oaklander and the inspiration for part of their band name. Xeno was a
    pre-Socratic philosopher whose view on the world tipped it upside down and
    inside out: he is known for his paradoxes; in short what you see is not what you
    get, life is a chimera, an illusion, a matter of perception. It is this inversion that
    captures the imagination of the band. Day vs. night, hot vs. cold, sunshine vs.
    moonlight, glitter vs. silver, chemistry vs. alchemy, stasis vs. movement; these are
    themes that permeate their lyrics and sounds.


    The artwork by Liz Wendelbo echoes the electro magnetic theme with what looks
    like a starry night sky or skyscraper at night. It is a blown up X-Ray of protein
    photographed through an electron microscope - what is called X-Ray crystallography.
    In Liz's words what is deep inside of us is a reflection of what is above us: and
    electricity runs through it all.

    Over the past few years, Charli has released a series of singles and mixtapes, toured the globe supporting the likes of Coldplay, Santigold, Sleigh Bells and Justice and garnered champions from practically every tastemaker blog and magazine on both sides of the Atlantic. She's had 2.5 million views on YouTube, 470k views of new video for 'You (Ha Ha Ha)' (in one month) and over 630k total plays on Soundcloud. It's hard to believe someone so young could achieve so much. Through it all her main focus has always been on making the best possible album she could. This was made possible by working with some fantastic collaborators who helped hone her vision for a dark, emotional pop record including Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Major Lazer, Solange), Patrik Berger (Lana del Rey, Robyn) as well as hotly tipped blog favourites Blood Diamonds and J£zus Millions.


    As well as being an artist in her own right, Charli has written and featured on one of the biggest global breakthrough hits of 2012 for Icona Pop. I Love It created an absolute frenzy stateside, having blown up all over the world.


    True Romance shares its title with an unbelievably well-cast 1993 movie written by Quentin Tarantino, who was reassembling cultural detritus way before mash-ups and microblogging. Charli XCX's approach to pop is similarly postmodern (how 90s does that sound?), pulling from moody 80s synth-pop, sassy turn-of-the-millennium girl groups, and state-of-the-art contemporary producers to create something distinctive and immediately memorable. She clearly understands the internet, having shared two original mixtapes and two influences mixtapes before her official full-length, but this carefully pruned set is no data dump. And there you'll see a glimmer of True Romance's most throwback aspect: its evident pop ambition, an overriding sense of an imagined mass audience for music that's radio-ready yet outsider-friendly. It's almost like Napster-- and the filler-crammed album sales model that preceded it-- never happened.


    In fact, by the time Charli XCX was a teenage electro-house devotee, illegal file-sharing's early free-for-all had already given way to iTunes and other legal download services. Robyn had already released her self-titled comeback album. So it might be only natural that Charli XCX would keep the pre-bubble faith that people will pay for emotionally direct, bubblegum-catchy, yet stubbornly left-of-center songs about falling in and out of love. But the generous hooks on the previously released singles here, such as the gospel-kissed prechorus of the yearning Stay Away or the Santigold-savvy lilt of love-and-the-bomb brooder Nuclear Seasons, are extraordinarily welcome just the same. Even better are newer singles such as the gorgeously bitter You (Ha Ha Ha), which inhabits its cloud-rappy Gold Panda sample like they were made for each other, and the almost-as-gorgeously blissful What I Like, which recounts a still-young relationship with the cheeky frankness of Lily Allen or the Streets, and the sing-songy near-rapping of the Spice Girls.


    The several songs on True Romance that hadn't previously surfaced in videos or other releases aren't quite as strong, but they're effective enough to suggest Charli XCX's best work might still be ahead of her. The Todd Rundgren-sampling So Far Away, with the sun-dappled lushness of the Avalanches, is a clear highlight; Charli XCX's vocals are usually plain-spoken, but the anguished break-up plea Set Me Free proves she can reach for Jessie Ware-like dramatics when appropriate. The pitch-shifting no one is forever intro added at the start of opener Nuclear Seasons probably should've been given its own track-- and later on the album it is, when the same backing vocal forms the base of the cloudy, broken-hearted Grins. Elsewhere, the haunted confession How Can I, while solid enough, is a reminder that Charli XCX's lyrics so far tend to fall relatively flat; when, on swooning finale Lock You Up, she sings, It hits me like a ton of bricks, she leaves the clichÉ untweaked.


    And then there's Cloud Aura, a lovelorn, engagingly laid-back bit of groove that lets Grimes' Genesis video co-star Brooke Candy rap horribly about Chris Brown. Candy's guest verse previously appeared on 2012's uneven Super Ultra mixtape, and it was near-universally panned. It isn't any better now. But in an era when too many up-and-comers are all too eager to please, this stubborn refusal to back down displays another quality in short supply: genuine irreverence. The songwriting and production credits on True Romance include Usher's Climax co-conspirator Ariel Rechtshaid and I Love It collaborator Patrick Berger, among others, who also share some credit (and blame). But like 90s pop stars turned 10s pop sophisticates Justin Timberlake and BeyoncÉ, Charli XCX stamps her personality across the entire project, and True Romance suggests she'll be worth following for a while.

    In the pantheon of under-the-radar American guitar heroes, Howard Roberts looms large. A remarkably versatile musician who was one of Los Angeles' most in-demand session players from the early 1950s through the 1970s, Roberts' career encompassed an incredible array of studio assignments. He recorded with a dizzying assortment of acts, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, the Beach Boys, the Monkees, Dean Martin, Sonny and Cher, the Jackson 5, Peggy Lee, Eddie Cochran, Chet Atkins and the Electric Prunes. He also played on countless film and television soundtracks; his guitar work is featured prominently in the iconic theme music of The Twilight Zone, The Munsters and I Dream of Jeannie.


    Roberts was also an accomplished musical educator, co-founding Hollywood's Guitar Institute of Technology, writing a regular instructional column on jazz improvisation for Guitar Player magazine, and penning several highly-regarded guitar instruction books. As a guitar teacher, one of his students was a teenaged Phil Spector, for whom Roberts would later work as a session man.


    Impressive as his session resume is, for many guitar aficionados, the real highlights of Howard Roberts' body of work are the instrumental albums he released under his own name throughout his career. One of his best-loved solo releases is the memorably titled H.R. Is A Dirty Guitar Player, originally released by Capitol Records in 1963. Recorded at the legendary Studio A in the Capitol Tower, with a band that includes fellow studio legends Chuck Berghofer and Earl Palmer on bass and drums, H.R. Is A Dirty Guitar Player is a potent showcase for Roberts' fluid, swinging guitar work. The material offers ample opportunity for the artist to demonstrate his versatility, encompassing pop standards 9Lerner, Loewe If Ever I Would Leave You), bossa nova (Antonio Carlos Jobim's One Note Samba) and jazz (tunes by Herbie Hancock, Count Basie and Duke Ellington), along with such Roberts originals as Smolderin', Turista, Deep Fry and Dirty Old Bossa Nova.
