Some Great RewardThe peak of the band's industrial-gone-mainstream fusion, and still one of the best electronic music albums yet recorded, Some Great Reward still sounds great, with the band's ever-evolving musical and production skills matching even more ambitious songwriting from Martin Gore. People Are People appears here, but finds itself outclassed by some of Depeche Mode's undisputed classics, most especially the moody, beautiful Somebody, a Gore-sung piano ballad that mixes its wit and emotion skillfully; Master and Servant, an amped-up, slamming dance track that conflates sexual and economic politics to sharp effect; and the closing Blasphemous Rumors, a slow-building anthemic number supporting one of Gore's most cynical lyrics, addressing a suicidal teen who finds God only to die soon afterward. Even lesser-known tracks like the low-key pulse of Lie to Me and the weirdly dreamy It Doesn't Matter showcase an increasingly confident band. Alan Wilder's arrangements veer from the big to the stripped down, but always with just the right touch, such as the crowd samples bubbling beneath Somebody or the call/response a cappella start to Master and Servant. With Reward, David Gahan's singing style found the mÉtier it was going to stick with for the next ten years, and while it's never gone down well with some ears, it still has a compelling edge to it that suits the material well.

Pulse/Quartet (Pre-Order)Nonesuch releases Steve Reich's Pulse / Quartet. Pulse (2015) is performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE)-an artist collective committed to transforming the way music is created and experienced-and Quartet (2013) is played by the Colin Currie Group, an ensemble led by percussionist Colin Currie that specializes in the music of Steve Reich; these are also the ensembles that gave the world premiere performances of the respective works.
Reich says, Pulse, for winds, strings, piano and electric bass, was completed in 2015 and was, in part, a reaction to Quartet, in which I changed keys more frequently than in any previous work. In Pulse I felt the need to stay put harmonically and spin out smoother wind and string melodic lines in canon over a constant pulse in the electric bass and or piano. From time to time this constant pulse is accented differently through changing hand alternation patterns on the piano. All in all, a calmer more contemplative piece.
He continues, Quartet, when mentioned in the context of concert music, is generally assumed to mean string quartet. In my case, the quartet that has played a central role in many of my pieces (besides the string quartet) is that of two pianos and two percussion. It appears like that or in expanded form with more pianos or more percussion in The Desert Music; Sextet; Three Movements; The Four Sections; The Cave; Dance Patterns; Three Tales; You Are (Variations); Variations for Vibes, Pianos and Strings; Daniel Variations; Double Sextet; and Radio Rewrite. In Quartet, there is just this group alone: two vibes and two pianos.
The piece is one of the more complex I have composed. It frequently changes key and often breaks off continuity to pause or take up new material. Though the parts are not unduly difficult, it calls for a high level of ensemble virtuosity. The form is one familiar throughout history: fast, slow, fast, played without pause. The slow movement introduces harmonies not usually found in my music.
Steve Reich has been called our greatest living composer (New York Times) and the most original musical thinker of our time (New Yorker). His path has embraced not only Western Classical music, but the structures, harmonies, and rhythms of non-Western and American vernacular music, particularly jazz. There's just a handful of living composers who can legitimately claim to have altered the direction of musical history and Steve Reich is one of them, states the Guardian. In April 2009 Steve Reich was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition Double Sextet. Nonesuch has released twenty-three Steve Reich albums, beginning in 1985 with The Desert Music and including two box sets; his most recent album was Radio Rewrite (2014).1. Pulse

RingerThe Ringer mini album is a 32 minute, four-track excursion into the kind of wide-open spaces you might find if you set out to make techno with an afrobeat/ krautrock sensibility. Ringer locks together gloriously rich synthesizer arpeggios; ôWing Body Wingö slips from crisp clusters of disco percussion to Steve Reich polyrhythms; and in between are another two euphoric ripples of sound, ôRibbonsö and ôSwimmer.ö The techno heartbeat comes from Kieran HebdenÆs regular DJ residences over the last couple of years as well as his ongoing collaborations with legendary jazz drummer Steve Reid. Whether in the studio or live, Kieran and Steve often click into the kind of deep 4/4 grooves that can depart in any direction with a little adjustment. Ringer carries that minimal pulse over into Four Tet, and while KieranÆs trademark recuttings of jazz breaks may be less in evidence, his feel for harmony and melody is, as always, unmistakable.1. WARB-ROA-0616xYoung The Giant
Young The GiantProduced by Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, The Shins, My Morning Jacket), mixed by Michael Brauer (Coldplay, My Morning Jacket) and recorded at Los Angeles' Sunset Sound Studios and Kingsize Studio, the 12-song self-titled album from the California five-piece Yount The Giant is an arresting collection of bright, melodic rock that ushers in the band as a fresh and vital presence.
From the jolting percussion and anthemic chorus of My Body to the driving guitars and lovesick fervor of Cough Syrup, Young The Giant is overflowing with addictive melodies and heartfelt lyrics at every turn. Islands marries off-kilter jazz rhythms with vocalist Sameer Gadhia's haunting falsetto to create an unnerving effect. The electric slide guitar that punctuates Street Walker shrouds the song's frenetic pulse and soaring vocals in mystery. The chiming guitars in Twelve Fingers exude pure joy, while the rhythmic swing of Strings, and the sun-stained pop of I Got capture Young The Giant in their SoCal glory.1. Apartment

Hiss SpunFeatures Etching On Side D (No Music)
While past albums operated on the intimacy of stripped-down folk music (The Grime and the Glow, Unknown Rooms), or the throbbing pulse of supplemental electronics (Pain Is Beauty, Abyss), Chelsea Wolfe's sixth official album Hiss Spun wrings its exquisiteness out of a palette of groaning bass, pounding drums, and crunching distortion. Recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge), the album was conceived as an emotional purge, a means of coming to terms with the tumult of the outside world by exploring the complexities of one's inner unrest. I'm at odds with myself, she explains. I got tired of trying to disappear. The record became very personal in that way. I wanted to open up more, but also create my own reality. Strange HeartsIn a year full of bail-outs and bank failures, Secret Cities found themselves fortunate to occupy the basement of a recently abandoned bank in Kansas City, Missouri. Complete with bulletproof glass, functioning pneumatic tubes, and a giant vault, this space served as the band's studio as they recorded their sophomore effort, Strange Hearts.
After recording their debut at a glacial pace over five years, Secret Cities decided to try something radically different. Working against a self imposed deadline, Strange Hearts was written and recorded within three intense, creatively fertile (if sleepless) months. The effort paid off with a taught pop record, crystallized like coal under enormous pressure.
Filtering the classic romanticism of Dusty Springfield and the Shangri-Las through their own kaleidoscopic aesthetic, these songs pulse with an alluring mixture of melancholy and hopeful innocence, as warm and inviting as they are elusive and peculiar. While carefully crafted, the album possesses a newfound brevity and directness rooted in the excitement of creation. Absolute II is the final piece in Oneidas Thank Your Parents triptych of releases, begun in 2008 with Preteen Weaponry and followed by 2009s acclaimed triple disc Rated O. With this release, the Brooklyn group concludes a challenging and profound long-term project. The Thank Your Parents triptych, totaling around 200 minutes, is intended to be listened to as a whole or in its component parts. Absolute II stands on its own, in addition to serving as a chapter in an immense whole.
The music on Absolute II is startling, rigorous and demanding. Oneida is a band that has been strongly identified with the frenetic, fluid drumming of Kid Millions and the relentless pulse of classic Krautrock, but this release contains neither audible drums nor identifiable rock music. The recordings move freely across accepted boundaries of rhythm, harmony, and tonality, not in the form of dramatic, willful experiment, but as a musical distillation of several themes that have emerged in the wake of Rated Os dynamism: paralysis, entropy, stasis, possibility, and finality among them.
While Oneida is known for unpredictability and sui generis musical forms, this release is particularly resistant to categorization, and it remains difficult to identify precise influences on the music contained here.1. Pre Human

Bon IverBon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there, solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed, but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.
Bon Iver is often equated with just me, says Vernon, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts. Thus on the track Beth/Rest and throughout the album, we hear the pedal steel of Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell), the uniquely layered low end of Colin Stetsons (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire) saxophones, the riffing of Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird) altos and tenors, and the lush horns of C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens). Bon Iver regulars Sean Carey, Mike Noyce and Matt McCaughan contributed vocals, drums and production, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, The National) helped with arranging and added strings, and fellow members of Volcano Choir, Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek provided processing.

Like MirageMoholy-Nagy is the moniker of San Francisco /
Berlin-based musicians Jefre Cantu-Ledesma (The
Alps), Danny Paul Grody (The Drift) and Trevor
Montgomery (Lazarus, The Drift). The trio are the
founding members of Tarentel a group that helped
inspired a decades worth of widescreen ambient rock
and Like Mirage reunites them for the first time since
that group's sophomore album, The Order of Things,

The Fucking Champs, Like Mirage is the culmination
of many months of improvisation, exploration and a
few scattered live performances in the Bay Area.
Although beginning with no particular sound or vision
in mind, the groups interest slowly began to revolve
around electric bass, analogue synthesizers, and the
steady pulse of the drum machine. Expanding their
pallet while in the recording studio to include piano,
acoustic and electric guitars and the live drums of

A Trip To MarinevilleBrothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks started the Swell Maps in the early 1970s while in their teens. The band's chaotic mix of arty experimentalism, garage primitivism, and punk rock gumption established a template for the British DIY post-punk movement of the late '70s and early '80s. The band's 1979 debut, A TRIP TO MARINEVILLE, perfectly captures the band's two disparate yet strangely compatible elements. Songs such as Spitfire Parade, Another Song, and the rousing opener H.S. Art burn with youthful abandon and a glammy, knowingly primitive cool. Yet by Don't Throw Ashtrays at Me and Bridge Head, the listener is presented with an almost completely different band, as improvised noise, clattering percussion, found sounds, and ambient piano soundscapes overtake the more straightforward rock elements that introduced the album. The hypnotic pulse of Krautrock creeps in on Full Moon in My Pocket and BLAM!! and the Sonic Youth blueprint is presented fully formed on Gunboat. For the Swell Maps, the call to arms of punk rock wasn't about empty gestures toward anarchy and social rebellion, but rather the notion of a personal revolution via the limitless possibilities of art. The Body WinsSarah Jaffe started work on The Body Wins the day she bought a bass and a drum set at a pawnshop. That day, she wrote the rhythmic A Sucker For Your Marketing and her second full-length began to take shape. Jaffe had pent-up creative energy inside her, after spending most of the year traveling and touring behind her debut Suburban Nature, and she explores it with abandon here.
There's a side of The Body Wins that didn't exist with Jaffe on her debut and it has a newfound pulse to it, more than a heartbeat, not quite a breakbeat. Glorified High, the first single perfectly captures that with a chorus that smacks you in the chest and lovingly lingers.
The Body Wins may sound different to those introduced to Jaffe through Suburban Nature and it should as it's more of a product of everywhere she's been, literally and figuratively, and a hint of everywhere she might go from here. Pure HeroineAfter hearing the opening song Bravado on Lorde's debut EP, The Love Club, it'd be easy to mistake Ella Yelich-O'Connor for a seasoned tunesmith
from the American South, one who carries a heavy heart that's been ravaged by careless men over time. But in truth, Lorde recorded these songs as a 16
-year old Kiwi championed by the likes of Perez Hilton and Grimes.
Her youthful exuberance is only somewhat more evident in the following single Royals, which balances her seemingly timeless knack for songcraft with
a sophisticated pop savvy that most people over 30 can't find without collaboration. Lorde needs no collaborative hacks -- she writes and sings her own
songs. The confidence in Royals and the financial fantasies of Million Dollar Bills pulse and pump with the sultry R&B pomp of a Beyonce hit, save for
production that's slightly more confectionery.
Even when she sings in her higher vocal range about teenage politics, Lorde carries herself with the grace and poise of someone like Beth Orton.
