    Alive 1997

Alive 1997 reveals the French duo Daft Punk as one of the brightest entertainers in the occasionally stale world of album-based electronic dance. True, techno and house DJs can light up a crowd like few others, but the increasing artist slant of electronica often results in push-button programming and straight-from-DAT live performances, with most of the heavy lifting relegated to the lighting supervisor and effects computers. This brief glimpse at Daft Punk's live show circa 1997 (their major breakout year) is a tour de force of high-energy theatrics and flair. Aside from the pair of WDPK interludes, Alive 1997 includes only three tracks, but they're so radically different from their album versions that they're only barely familiar. The duo's biggest hit so far, Da Funk, is stretched out to 16 minutes with a start-and-stop improvisation section that brings the crowd to a peak, while Rollin' & Scratchin' never looks back after breaking right on through the red-line. An energizing document, Alive 1997 is one of the few live records to approximate the excitement of the original live show.

    Bad Brains (Awaiting Repress)

Bad Brains is the first full-length studio album recorded by Bad Brains. Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys has been quoted as saying that this album is the best punk/hardcore album of all time. It was originally released on cassette only but has since been re-released by ROIR on both CD and vinyl.

When the album was unveiled in 1982, fans and critics alike were stunned to learn that the musicians behind this album - one of the fastest albums of all time upon its release - were religious African-American Rastafarians who also were skilled at reggae. The album was a crucial step in the formation of hardcore punk and the eventual fusion of hard rock and reggae adopted later by bands like Sublime, Fishbone, and 311.

Soul Jazz Records' new Punk 45 album is a collection of tracks of twisted, raw and energized proto-punk music from the early 1970s, ahead-of-its-time music which led the way for the birth of punk in the second half of the 1970s. Punk 45: Sick on You! One Way Spit! After the Love & Before the Revolution: Proto-Punk 1969-77 is the third volume in this series, following on from two earlier albums as well as Soul Jazz Records' massive 400-page Punk 45 cover art book (compiled by Jon Savage, author of the seminal punk book London's Dreaming, and Stuart Baker of Soul Jazz Records). This new album is compiled and has extensive sleeve-notes by Jon Savage.

    Dr. Demento Covered in Punk

Wind up your radio dementites and dementoids-the doctor is in!

This extra-special two-hour demented punk extravaganza is an audio oddity unlike anything else! An eclectic mix of artists from the world of classic and contemporary punk/indie/alt-rock have assembled, along with special guest stars from film, TV and more, to pay homage to radio icon Dr. Demento (a world-renowned institution who has championed novelty music and its creators since the 1970s), for this mind-blowing compilation. Over thirty different, never before released, all-new 'punk' cover versions of 'mad music and crazy comedy' songs famously heard on the airwaves of the legendary "Dr. Demento Show"-have been intermixed with 'wildcard' tracks showcasing some incredible, newly 'demented' versions of punk-rock classics!

The result is a uniquely original, highly entertaining, modern-day homage to Dr. Demento's classic radio show, and its undeniable impact on popular culture. This bizarro broadcast from beyond the fringe is hosted by Dr. Demento himself, offering up interesting factoids and anecdotes between songs, with celebrity guest ID spots, creatively crafted bumper segments, and more 'demented' surprises tying it all together into an unconventional take on the traditional radio show format.

Over two-full hours, a total of 64 tracks-all created specifically for "Dr. Demento Covered in Punk"!

The three-disc vinyl LP come with an equally entertaining full-color booklet jam-packed with extensive liner notes and quotes personally written by the artists, a forward by producer John Cafiero (Misfits, Ramones, Osaka Popstar), an Afterword by Dr. Demento, as well as facts, photos, and an array of dynamic paintings and illustrations created specifically for the project by a team of visual artists spanning the world of comic books, classic punk-rock album covers, Topps Trading card series, Mad Magazine and more.

Joined by everyone from the Misfits, Joan Jett, Fred Schneider of the B52s, to "Weird Al" Yankovic, the late Adam "Batman" West (in one of his final performances), and Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner-(to name just a few), the Doctor is in and he's 'Covered in Punk'!!

About Dr. Demento: The Dr. Demento Show has been celebrating 'mad music and crazy comedy' on the airwaves playing everything from Spike Jones to Frank Zappa for nearly five decades. Responsible for introducing the world to its #1 most requested song of all time, "Fish Heads", and launching the career of the most successful artist in the entire history of funny music-"Weird Al" Yankovic; the world-famous Doctor's influence on pop culture has earned him induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame, a documentary feature film on his life and career currently in production, and even an appearance on The Simpsons.

Soul Jazz Records' new 'Punk 45' album Extermination Nights in the Sixth City charts the rise of underground punk in the mid-west city of Cleveland, Ohio, which for many people is the true birthplace of punk music in the mid-1970s. Featuring a fantastic collection of punk 45 singles from Cleveland groups including Pere Ubu, electric eels, The Pagans, Rockets From The Tomb, Mirrors, X-X and more. The album follows on from Soul Jazz Records' earlier Punk 45 albums about USA and British punk (Kill The Hippies! Death Was Too Kind (Awaiting Repress)

Subhumans and DOA were the two pillars of the Vancouver, BC, Canada punk scene who caught Jello Biafra's attention and were spotlighted in the landmark Alternative Tentacles compilation Let Them Eat Jellybeans. The Subhumans, first active between 1978 and 1982, were the more elusive of the two, with many out-of-print releases fetching bank on eBay and making it difficult for present-day fans to connect the dots.

Now, the Subhumans join the Alternative Tentacles Re-issues of Necessity pantheon with Death Was Too Kind, a collection of material from the early years, lovingly remastered from original source material: the very first single Death to the Sickoids (only 500 were pressed); the Firing Squad single; the self-titled EP produced by Bob Rock, who went on to work with Metallica, The Cult, Offspring, etc.; Look at the Dawn and Pissed Off... With Good Reason, two virtually lost songs (only available on the 1996 collection CD released by Essential Noise in Canada), especially remastered for this reissue from the original tapes by Jesse Gander at Hive Studios.

Death Was Too Kind features the band's best-known lineup with Wimpy Roy, Gerry Useless, Mike Graham, Dimwit, and Jim Imagawa. Both the LP & the CD come with liner notes!

    Soul Punk

Soul Punk is the debut solo album from Patrick Stump, lead singer/composer/guitarist for Chicago-based multi-platinum Island Records group Fall Out Boy. The 11-tracks on Soul Punk hit a variety of themes, including Stump's love for his hometown of Chicago in This City, a scathing treatise of Madoff-era materialism on Greed and a reminiscent musing on naive sexuality on Allie.

In deference to one of his primal influences, Prince, Stump left nothing to chance on his debut, playing all the instruments himself, including drums, bass, electric and acoustic guitars, piano, analog synths, drum kit, marching drums, percussion, trumpet, valve trombone, alto and tenor saxophones, mandolin, guitelele and manipulating various found sounds and ambient noises.

As the title Soul Punk suggests, the album straddles Stump's roots in R&B and punk. I wanted to do my thing and I wanted to do it my way. I wanted to set the tone for the future. Soul Punk is kind of like a calling card.

Over the last four years, Olympia-based punk trio Naomi Punk - featuring
singer/guitarist Travis Coster, guitarist Neil Gregerson, and drummer Nic
Luempert - have been lighting up DIY warehouses and large concert halls
alike with their singular brand of mid-tempo, cathartic punk. Commencing
their breakout 2012 debut 'The Feeling', Naomi Punk return to the fold with
their sophomore record, 'Television Man' - their first for Captured Tracks. A
key fixture in the Northwest DIY punk scene, Naomi Punk channel a similar
energy to their contemporaries (Milk Music, Broken Water, Vexx, Gag) and
their fore bearers (Wipers, Dead Moon, Nirvana) while cultivating a body of
work and aesthetic that is wholly their own.

Home recorded in Olympia, Washington over the Fall and Winter of 2013,
and mastered by Rick Fisher at RFI, 'Television Man' is a collection of oblique
punk anthems and collaged instrumental pieces which best showcases the
cathartic aggression that has become their signature.

BRANT BJORK, as cult figure of the Palm Desert scene, was founder / drummer of the now defunct Stoner-Rock legends Kyuss and is a permanent member of Vista Chino (formerly KYUSS Lives!). Now, he is sailing under his own flag, proving once again that his multi-instrumental skills know no creative boundaries. With his excellent occupied Low Desert Punk Band, Bjork lets the scorching heat of Nevada shimmer in his songs. He also scrubs his guitar through all sorts of psychedelic effect pedals and skillfully mixes Stoner Rock, Blues and Doom-bonds to a feverish hazy brew.

    Alive 2007

Timed to perfection, Daft Punk's second live album landed exactly ten years after the first, and provides a fitting complement to Alive 1997, easily the best live non-DJ electronica record ever released. While the original featured only a handful of tracks (but found them transformed and tweaked ad infinitum), Alive 2007 is packed with productions, most of them short and many of them getting a big crowd response (all recorded at one show in Paris in June of 2007). As on their first two classic full-lengths, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo display excellent crowd control, pacing the record well, spacing the hits, and building the mood like the good crowd-pleasers they are. It has the feel of a greatest-hits-live concert, but energized by Daft Punk's talents at weaving songs in and out of each other. Even songs from the comparatively desultory Human After All sound rejuvenated in context, with Robot Rock getting the show off to a rousing start. It may not be better or stronger than the original Alive 1997, but it's definitely harder and faster.
