    Quebec

Quebec is the 8th album by Ween, released on August 5, 2003 on Sanctuary Records. It was the first album released after the band's contract with Elektra expired, and marked its return to independent labels. The album on a whole is comparable to Chocolate and Cheese or their first album GodWeenSatan in that not one single mood or theme can describe it, unlike their country record 12 Golden Country Greats, their nautically-themed The Mollusk, their Beatlesque pop album White Pepper, the dark and murky The Pod and the cheerful psychedelic Pure Guava.

The song It's Gonna Be a Long Night is featured in the game 'Tony Hawks Underground 2'. *The music video for Transdermal Celebration was animated by well known Disney animator Adam Phillips.

Music critic Mark Prindle named Quebec the best album of the 2000's.

    Blue & Sentimental

Ike Quebec's timeless, big-toned tenor was a frequent visitor to Rudy Van Gelder's studio in the early sixties. But this album from December 1961 with spare, soulful backing from Grant Green, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones is his masterpiece. The leaner setting works perfectly, evoking an aura of relaxation and monumentality, with the deepest blue of accents.

    Blue And Sentimental

During the Blue Note 75th anniversary celebration the label released 100 essential Blue Note LPs and asked New York Times readers what titles they'd like to see make the list. This album is one of five new reissues that were hand-selected by Blue Note President, Don Was, based on New York Times reader recommendations.

Ike Quebec's 1961-1962 comeback albums for Blue Note were all pretty rewarding, but Blue and Sentimental is his signature statement of the bunch, a superbly sensuous blend of lusty blues swagger and achingly romantic ballads. True, there's no shortage of that on Quebec's other Blue Note dates, but Blue and Sentimental is the most exquisitely perfected.

Quebec was a master of mood and atmosphere, and the well-paced program here sustains his smoky, late-night magic with the greatest consistency of tone. Part of the reason is that Quebec's caressing tenor sound is given a sparer backing than usual, with no pianist among the quartet of guitarist Grant Green, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones. It's no surprise that Green solos with tremendous taste and elegance (the two also teamed up on Green's similarly excellent Born to Be Blue), and there are plenty of open spaces in the ensemble for Quebec to shine through.

His rendition of the Count Basie-associated title cut is a classic, and the other standard on the original LP, Don't Take Your Love from Me, is in a similarly melancholy vein. Green contributes a classic-style blues in Blues for Charlie, and Quebec's two originals, Minor Impulse and Like, have more complex chord changes but swing low and easy.

Through it all, Quebec remains the quintessential seducer, striking just the right balance between sophistication and earthiness, confidence and vulnerability, joy and longing. It's enough to make Blue and Sentimental a quiet, sorely underrated masterpiece.

It Might As Well Be Spring

    Blue Note Reissue

As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. These boys know the sound of the facility and the Van Gelder masters like the backs of their handsBack home a month later, I unpack some test pressings Chad Kassem has sent meI hear the most realistic-sounding drums ever reproduced by my system. It's as though I'm sitting at the point of creation, experiencing the same high that brought such gifted musicians together as one. Steve Hoffman, Kevin Gray, Chad Kassem, and Don MacInnis have done Rudy Van Gelder and his Blue Note artists proud. Jason Victor Serinus, Stereophile, April 2008

Two weeks after Ike Quebec recorded his comeback album Heavy Soul for Blue Note, he was back at the Van Gelder Studio with the same band (Freddie Roach, Milt Hinton and Al Harewood), making a second album. The confidence paid off because It Might As Well Be Spring is every bit the classic the first album proved to be. Quebec's big-toned, vulnerable tenor playing is a thing to behold, as his heart-stopping version of the title tune, Lover Man and Willow Weep For Me attest. Easy Don't Hurt is one of his blues masterpieces.

Remastered on 200-gram, heavyweight vinyl at legendary Abbey Road, all from original analogue masters, Permanent Waves is RUSH's seventh studio album. Released on January 1, 1980, and recorded at Le Studio in Quebec it was their first U.S. album to go Top Five, peaking at #4 on the Billboard charts. Tout Seul Dans La Forêt En Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur?

Translated as "Alone in the forest in the middle of the day, are you scared?" This is the latest musical project from Genevieve Castree, a native of Quebec who moved to the US in 2004, and has spent her time trying to follow what's happening in this country and all around her. The music is dark and insistent, yet still has some hope left in its vocal chords that gives it its spine. This is a record about present times, but may very well be about what has happened in the past and what might just happen again in the future. Are you scared? The entire record is sung in French, with a book of English translations and illustrations.

    No Ghost

After headline runs and bouts touring with critical darlings like Bowerbirds, Phosphorescent and Akron/Family, in the summer of 2009 Canadian quintet the Acorn retreated from two years on the road to an isolated cottage in northern Quebec to begin work on their third full-length album, No Ghost. Songs took shape at all hours, crafted from hazy late-night improvisations, early morning melodies pulled from the thinning threads of sleep. Modernity clashed with the bucolic via exploratory percussion, feedback, acoustic textures and the natural surrounding sounds. The band then traded trees for telephone poles to finish recording in a sweltering heat wave in Montreal. There, the breezy ease of rural surrounds was buried under sweat-caked skin and cracked asphalt, birdsong drowned out by thick air and engine hum. No Ghost is a recording swaddled in dichotomy: togetherness and isolation, acoustic and electric, destruction and restoration.

Voivod is a Canadian heavy metal band from Quebec that formed in 1982. They started out as a speed metal band while adding a mix of progressive and thrash metal to create their own unique style. They were one of the first thrash bands from Canada to receive international acclaim. The band has released eleven studio albums and a number of EPs, live albums, demos, and DVDs. The band is still touring and are set to release a new album in 2017.

The band's third full album perfectly reinforces their image of a post-apocalyptic wasteland set against a thrashing-punk-speed-metal soundscape. It was released on Noise Records in 1987. This definitive re-issue of VOIVOD's Killing Technology is a must-have item for any fan of this unique and ground-breaking Progressive Metal band.

Last Ex is the new instrumental rock ensemble led by Simon Trottier and

    Last Ex project.

Last Ex is the new instrumental rock ensemble led by Simon Trottier and
Olivier Fairfield, long active in Quebec's experimental/punk scene, though
perhaps best known as core members of Timber Timbre, which spawned the
    Last Ex project.

Constellation knew nothing of this back story when the label received the
Last Ex demos in spring 2014; we just heard a compelling, compact, coherent,
highly evocative instrumental album that kept worming its way into our ears.
By the tenth time someone in the office said Let's play that Last Ex stuff
again - and everyone enthusiastically agreed - it was time to contact the
band. This music belonged in the Constellation catalogue: an instrumental
rock album of superb compositional and melodic sensibility, balancing
minimalism and restraint with atmosphere and tone, bound by a refreshingly
    original approach to production.

Last Ex makes ample use of the electric guitar as both lead instrument and
textural sound source, structuring most of the pieces around deliberate
melodic and contrapuntal deployments of Spaghetti Western twang, while
distressing, degrading and redeploying those sonics through Fairfield's analog
tape-based manipulations. Trottier takes on most of the guitar duties, with
Timbre Timber's Taylor Kirk contributing on a couple of tunes as well. Tight
bursts of trap set rhythms played by Fairfield, and usually captured with just a
couple of microphones, along with consistently excellent basslines laid down
by both Simon and Olivier, propel the album and make this anything but an
ambient listen. Strings appear on several pieces, courtesy Mika Posen (also of
Timber Timbre), in a wide range of textures and treatments.

With its combination of assured lyricism, cinematic guitars, dusky analog
atmospherics and taut percussion, this is a vivid, concise and expressive
instrumental album that sits snugly between fellow label acts Do Make Say
Think and Exhaust on the one hand, Hrsta, Tindersticks and Evangelista on the
other. Fans of early Trans Am, early/mid Tortoise, Calexico and (obviously)
Timbre Timber should appreciate this as a very satisfying grower of an album
    as well. Thanks for listening.

To The Death 84 (Awaiting Repress)

Voivod originally formed in 1983, with a weird hybrid of thrash metal and punk, a sound that made them stand out as a unique band from the beginning. Still together after almost 30 years, having made more than a dozen albums and toured the world, the Canadian group reaches back to the beginning of their career for their first Alternative Tentacles release.

Voivod began as four friends who met in high school and decided to get together to play some heavy music. Growing up in Northern Quebec in an aluminum factory area called Saguenay (which they dubbed Morgoth Land), they shared a liking of Venom, Motörhead, Tank, Discharge and GBH, as well as obscure prog and krautrock bands like Van Der Graaf Generator, Faust and Can. They were scared of the threat of a nuclear war and Reagan-era concepts such as the Strategic Defense Initiative, and had a dystopian view of the future.

To the Death 84 is 70 minutes of loud, blistering metal/punk. Recorded live in the bands jam space in January of 1984 with an old tape recorder and a couple of microphones, it nonetheless sounds great and hits as hard today as it did back then. This demo tape was sent to all the fanzines the band knew of at the time, and has circulated among collectors for years. The lineup for these recordings was Snake (Denis BÉlanger) on lead vocals, Piggy (Denis DAmour) on guitar, Blacky (Jean-Yves ThÉriault) on bass and Away (Michel Langevin) on drums. The track listing includes songs from War and Pain, their debut album, and six others, including a Mercyful Fate cover and two Venom covers.

GORGUTS, long-running Canadian craftsmen of technical death metal have returned! After more than a decade of silence, mastermind Luc Lemay unleashes Colored Sands, a new brand of pestilent fury featuring an all star line-up including John Longstreath (ORIGIN, SKINLESS), Colin Marston (BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS) and Kevin Hufnagel (DYSRHYTHMIA).

Few extreme bands have the pedigree of GORGUTS. During their early days as part of death metal's first wave, they created a legacy of legendary releases including their debut album Considered Dead (1991) and its follow-up Erosion of Sanity (1993). The latter witnessed the Canadians becoming more experimental and technical. After a hiatus of five years, Luc Lemay returned with a new line-up, which released the acclaimed third full-length Obscura (1998). By then GORGUTS had fully transformed into one of the most progressive and influential bands in extreme music, which remained impervious to trends, while expanding and redefining the language of death metal. With a new line-up that left Lemay as the sole original member, another milestone album was released. On From Wisdom to Hate (2001) the Quebecois successfully merged the brutal and more direct approach of their earlier albums with the complex arrangements of Obscura.

Just as GORGUTS seemed on the verge of making the first decade of the new century their own, the band was hit by business and personal issues and went on hiatus. Their musical legacy continued to inspire and thrive as their native Quebec became a focus for technical death metal with acts such as CRYPTOPSY, NEURAXIS and BEYOND CREATION to name but a few following in their footsteps.

6 Of The Greatest Jazz Legends In Their Prime

180 Gram Audiophile 2LP Vinyl With Gatefold

On a cold November evening in 1980, 3000 jazz fans filled the Salle Wilfrid Pelletier Hall of Place des Arts
in Montreal, Quebec to attend what promised to be, a swinging evening featuring six of the biggest names
in bebop. Billed The Concert of the Century - A Tribute to Charlie Parker, and under the direction of
Dizzy Gillespie - one of the best jazz trumpeters of all time - the event featured legendary performers:
Hank Jones - piano, Ray Brown - bass, Milt Jackson - vibes, Philly Joe Jones - drums and James Moody
on tenor sax and flute. Local club owner Roue Doudou Boicel, who produced the concert, had the foresight
to record the concert in its entirety. A limited quantity bootleg LP of the concert soon appeared and then
disappeared from the marketplace, those tapes lay dormant for over 30 years.

This historic recording opens with rapturous applause that sets the tone with Dizzy's own "Blues 'N' Boogie.
"Also featured are several classic standards - some more well known then others - including "Darben The
Redd Foxx," "Time On My Hands," "Get Happy," "The Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Stardust." All the players are
at the top of their game and having a blast, as evidenced by the banter and repartee between songs.

Concert of the Century, pristinely restored and remastered, features two tracks that weren't on the original
pressing from the early '80s - Ralph Rainger's "If I Should Lose You" and an incredible eight minute bass
    solo by Ray Brown.

    More Than Any Other Day

Debut Album From One Of Montreal's Most Talked-about Indie-Rock Bands.

Ought has been burning with a strong and steady flame since flickering to life in
Montreal in 2011. Holed up in a shared apartment that doubled as their rehearsal
space, the four band members self-recorded a first EP and played their first show
in these domestic confines, then busted out into the city's loft circuit, and into the
city streets during the Printemps d'Erable Quebec student general strike, in 2012.
These inspired months of mass mobilization against neo-liberal austerity
measures galvanized a wide range of agit-prop expression in Montreal, and
indelibly shaped the emerging sound, vision and social mandate of Ought.
Guitarist/vocalist Tim Beeler, who previously had been writing poetry and folk
music, drew new energy from electrification/amplification and solidarity/protest
alike; his declarative, observational vocal style ranges from wide-eyed to
worried, but never submits to cool irony or emotional detachment.

Ought's earnest, stately and exuberant post-punk is dextrous, deliberate, unfussy
and fluid, with debts to Cap'n Jazz, The Feelies, Lungfish, Gang Of Four and early
Talking Heads, among many others. The band shifts from sharp angles and stuttering
counterpoint to softer edges and chiming flow, with an economy of elements and
fidelity to their basic 4-piece constitution. The instrumental interplay is
consistently whipsmart, supple and deceptively simple. Beeler's speak-singing
can give way to melancholic melodic croons and ragged, desperate yelps, always
driven by sincerity of feeling and connection to his subject matter, whether that's
the conundrum of our fractured interiority or communion with others in our
fractured social space (or, for the most part, both).

Ought are a righteous and humble young band, fiercely dedicated to grassroots
organizing and artmaking, taking as self-evident the inseparability of politics
and aesthetics; we are proud and excited to be releasing their debut full-length.

More Than Any Other Day is the result of a week of recording and mixing at
Montreal's Hotel2Tango with engineer Radwan Moumneh (Suuns, Matana Roberts,
Jerusalem In My Heart) in November 2013; the album replaces the band's previously
self-released 5-song Bandcamp EP of the same name, which comprised a separate
set of recordings. Thanks for listening.

Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything

Marks The 15th Anniversary Of The Band, Founded And Led By Efrim Menuck Of Godspeed You! Black Emperor

First New SMZ Full Length Since GYBE's Return To Action In 2011

Recorded In Quebec By Greg Norman (electrical Audio)

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra (SMZ) has traced a barbed-wire arc of
genre-defying protest music since its inception in 1999. Formed by Efrim Menuck, with
Thierry Amar and Sophie Trudeau, the initial iteration of the band was a predominantly
instrumental trio that forged a more intimate and ragged chamber-punk than Godspeed
You! Black Emperor, in which group all three founding SMZ members also played (and
continue to play). Through seven albums from 2000-2010, SMZ expanded its line-up and
shifted towards an increasing use of lead and group vocals, with Menuck penning politically charged lyrics to anchor long-form multi-movement compositions that juxtaposed electrified
guitars against a 4-piece string section of violins, cello and contrabass.

Most recently, SMZ has pared back to five players, with Menuck's massive spectrum spanning electric guitar sound emerging as the spine around which two violins, bass (now
more often electric than acoustic) and drums are deployed. SMZ have managed a handful
of short tours in the past couple of years (in the gaps between GYBE commitments) and
as anyone who has seen the band in its recent incarnation can attest, their current sound
is more honed, laser-guided and bone-rattling than ever, melding hardcore, blues, garage
and dark metal influences that have nothing to do with anything so quaint as "post-rock"
(a tag the group has always and rightly rejected).

Fuck Off Get Free We Pour Light On Everything is the first definitive document of
the band's newfound sound and style as a quintet. It's also their first single LP-length
work since the band's debut record as a trio almost 15 years ago, and features road tested pummeling rock-outs "Fuck Off Get Free (For The Island Of MontrÉal)", "Take
Away These Early Grave Blues" and "What We Loved Was Not Enough" alongside the
previously unheard lullabyes/minuets "Little Ones Run" and "Rains Thru The Roof At Thee
Grande Ballroom (For Capital Steeze)" and the album centerpiece "Austerity Blues" with
its closing lyric "Lord let my son live long enough to see that mountain torn down"
sung in varying incarnations throughout the second half of this 14-minute epic.

This lyric in many ways encapsulates Menuck's unflinching take on a world replete with
shabbiness, greed and injustice, seen through the lens of parenthood, mortality, endurance
and defiance. There are few other musicians who deliver social critique with the courage
and honesty of lines like "All our cities gonna burn / All our bridges gonna snap / All our
pennies gonna rot / Lightning roll across our tracks / All our children gonna die". Feel-good
music this is not; but neither can it reductively be tagged apocalyptic or world-weary.
Fuck Off Get Free rages with scorn and with hope, utterly passionate but pointedly
unromantic. Thee Silver Mt. Zion once again demonstrates, like few other bands working
today, that there is much to fight for and against, and plenty more fight songs to sing.

    FREEMAN

Listening to Marvelous Clouds, Aaron Freeman's 2012 debut under his own name, fans might have felt that he was ignoring an elephant in his room-a drug-and-alcohol-related onstage flame-out that made viral headlines the year before. But Clouds, a deceptively chill Rod McKuen covers record, was just a warm-up for the artist once known as Gene Ween. In the opening minutes of FREEMAN, the self-titled debut from his new band, Freeman addresses addiction and its aftermath with the combination of merciless self-inventory and artful songcraft that earned Ween one of the most devoted fan bases in contemporary pop. This song, the unmistakably autobiographical Covert Discretion, is a quiet shocker. Save your judgments for someone else, Freeman sings. Be grateful I saved me from myself.

As bitter as it sounds, the track clears the air. FREEMAN represents a new beginning- Aaron Freeman's first album of original material since disbanding Ween and getting sober-but it isn't a record mired in its maker's private struggles. It's simply a collection of gorgeous, subtly offbeat songs-in other words, a continuation of the thread that runs through the entire Ween catalog. The lush psychedelic pop of The English and Western Stallion; the melancholy plea of More Than the World; the unflappable, Plastic Ono Band-esque blues-rock of Gimmie One More-these are songs that bear the unmistakable Aaron Freeman stamp.

And to hear Freeman tell it, they wouldn't have been possible if he'd stayed in his old band. There was so much of 'Aaron had to break up Ween because of addiction' and 'Aaron broke up Ween in order to pursue his solo work,' he says. But I broke up Ween because we were at a creative dead end way before our last record, La Cucaracha. Basically we were going through the motions, becoming a showcase band.

Freeman stresses that FREEMAN is more about renewal than turning his back on the past. I want this record to pay homage to Ween, he says. These are the same songs I would've written in Ween-except without [ex-bandmate] Mickey. Several tracks hark back to the role-playing that was a hallmark of Freeman's back-catalog: (For a While) I Couldn't Play My Guitar Like a Man, a badass blues-rock meditation on lost mojo; or Black Bush, a trippy, heavily stylized ode to the natural beauty of Freeman's recently adopted hometown of Woodstock.

But there's also a fresh perspective here, the sound of a shadow lifting. Delicate Green, which savors life's everyday blessings, is one of the sweetest, most sincere songs Freeman has written. And All the Way to China and El Shaddai reference Jewish texts-Kabbalah readings and James A. Michener's The Source, respectively-that guided him through his darkest times. There's a lot of spiritual stuff on here because that really helped me, Freeman says. I listened to a lot of reggae-'Jah gonna help me through Babylon,' you know? I listened to a lot of Paul McCartney too, and I thought, if he can do this, break up the fucking Beatles, I can certainly break up Ween and be okay.

Aaron Freeman has also turned his back on substance abuse, a fact that might concern fans who mistake intoxication for inspiration. I wrote the songs I wrote in Ween despite all the drugs and alcohol I was doing, not because, Freeman says. Most people don't get sobriety at all. They assume you're this better-than-thou monk sitting on a mountain, judging everybody. It's not that way: You have to let everybody do their thing, and you get weirder. A song like FREEMAN's Golden Monkey, which rivals Ween's underrated Quebec for sheer mind-warping brilliance, proves Freeman's point.

In order to get to FREEMAN, Aaron Freeman had to make a clean break. If I hadn't left my partnership, there wouldn't be anything, he explains. I'd probably be dead too. I know that at the end of the day, this is the best thing I could've done for me and for every Ween fan. FREEMAN, an album that distills the Aaron Freeman aesthetic-built on equal parts wonder and malaise, frankness and mysticism, defiance and vulnerability-to its headiest essence, proves his point. This man, known for so long by another name, is finally free.

    Neon Bible

Neon Bible is the second studio album by the Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, originally released on March 5, 2007 (UK) and March 6, 2007 (US) on Merge Records. Originally announced on December 16, 2006, through the band's website, the majority of the album was recorded at a church the band bought and renovated in Farnham, Quebec. The album is the first to feature drummer Jeremy Gara and the first to include violinist Sarah Neufeld among the band's core line-up.

Neon Bible became Arcade Fire's highest-charting album at the time, debuting on the Billboard 200 at number two, selling 92,000 copies in its first week and more than 400,000 to date. Being released within a month of similarly successful releases by The Shins (Wincing the Night Away) and Modest Mouse (We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank), Neon Bible was cited as an example of the popularization of indie rock.

Apologies To The Queen Mary (Deluxe Edition)

Sub Pop will release Wolf Parade's Apologies to the Queen Mary: Deluxe Edition, a reissue of the group's acclaimed first album, worldwide on 3xLP/DL May 13th. The reissue features the original album, now as a much-better-sounding 2Xlp, along with the band's pre-Sub Pop, self-titled EPs (released in 2003 and 2004), both of which are making their vinyl debut. The package also includes the previously unreleased track "Snakes on the Ladder" from the Apologies sessions. The album was remastered for this release by the band's longtime associate Harris Newman at Grey Market Mastering. This reissue comes on the heels of Wolf Parade's recently-announced reunion. The band will be touring in the summer of 2016.

Wolf Parade was founded in 2003 in Montreal, Quebec. After the aforementioned self-titled EPs, the group released Apologies to the Queen Mary to much acclaim in September, 2005, on Sub Pop. The album was recorded by Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock and engineer Chris Chandler at Audible Alchemy in Portland, Oregon. The album was an entirely collaborative effort, barreling headfirst and breathlessly through songs written during Wolf Parade's early years together as a band.

Pitchfork gave Apologies to the Queen Mary a 9.2 rating, saying, "Wolf Parade's true talent is transforming the everyday into the unprecedented." And The Guardian raved, "Magnificent, all told." The album has sold over 100,000 in the U.S. alone.

Once Upon a Hell of a Time...

Enigmatic singer-songwriter and Canada's own rock'n'roll son, Matt Mays returns with a brand new studio album, his sixth, Once Upon a Hell of a Time. Matt co-produced the record with collaborator Loel Campbell (Wintersleep). This new album follows up the award-winning Coyote, which landed Matt a 2014 JUNO Award for Rock Album of the Year.

Constantly on the move, Matt recorded Once Upon a Hell of a Time all over North America with sessions in California, British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New York.

"The full album has a pretty strong theme or feeling and I wanted that to come across right away," says Matt. "This is party rock for the heartbroken. And you can't leave a party short of tunes, or better yet, you can't leave the sad and lonely folks with just one song to cry to. So, why just release one song when you can leak four?!"

After departing the seminal alt-country collective The Guthries back in 2002, Matt alternated between solo projects (his self-titled debut, the faux soundtrack When the Angels Make Contact) and band projects (the now legendary Matt Mays & El Torpedo record and 2008's Terminal Romance). Following the dissolution of Matt Mays & El Torpedo in 2009, Matt released Coyote in 2012.

    Funeral

Funeral is the debut studio album by Canadian indie rock band Arcade Fire, originally released on September 14, 2004, in North America by Merge Records and on February 28, 2005, in Europe by Rough Trade Records. It was given its title because several band members had recently lost members of their families: RÉgine Chassagne's grandmother died in June 2003, Win and William Butler's grandfather (swing musician Alvino Rey) in February 2004, and Richard Reed Parry's aunt in April 2004.

Preliminary recordings for Funeral were made during the course of a week in August 2003 at the Hotel2Tango in Montreal, Quebec, and the recording was completed later that year all in an analog recording format.

The album produced five singles. The most successful, Rebellion (Lies), peaked at #19 on the UK Singles Chart. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005 for Best Alternative Music Album. It received widespread critical acclaim and topped many year-end and decade-end lists. According to the website Metacritic, the album had the second most appearances on end-of-decade Top 10 lists, only behind Radiohead's Kid A.

    Devastates

Elfin Saddle deepens its compositional and conceptual agenda on Devastates, the band's third full-length album and its most urgent, ornate and impassioned work to date. The Montreal group, led by multi-instrumentalists Emi Honda and Jordan McKenzie (who also share vocal duties), has always shown a profound engagement with issues of environmental sustainability and the emotional impact of economic/political ideologies that continually foreclose on the possibility of genuine, progressive renewal and redirection. The band's music-making, and the parallel art practice on display in Honda and McKenzie's installation and video work, investigates the tensions between nature and technology on multiple levels. With Devastates, this is explicit in the lyrical narrative of the album as a whole and implicit in the band's use of found and re-purposed objects to create its soundworld.

The new abulm weds an operetta-style song cycle to an organic, junkshop aesthetic to great effect, forging a unique hybrid of folk music that weaves Honda's thrilling vocals (often singing in Japanese) and McKenzie's woodsy, unaffected baritone with threads of clattering steam-engine percussion, ukulele, accordion, glockenspiel and pump organ. The addition of Kristina Koropecki's cello alongside long-standing third member Nathan Gage on upright bass allows for a doubly melodic/rhythmic low-end.

Recorded in a small, abandoned chapel in rural Quebec, Devastates is intimate and humbly epic, anchored by a DIY aesthetic and fueled by the desire to say something both critical and hopeful about our common earthly trajectory. This is profoundly un-escapist and engaged folk music that avoids the obvious trappings of the folk traditions, grounding the listener in a sonic and narrative terrain that stakes out a highly original and distinctive definition of a protest song. 180g vinyl with a full color liner notes insert, screen printed art poster and download code.
