The Quintet Black S is the best example of Quintet's overall excellence

The Quintet Black S is graced with a Nude Shibata diamond, considered one of the best stylus profiles available, mounted on a high-performance Sapphire cantilever.

The Shibata's slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the walls of the groove and ensures detailed and pure reproduction thoughout the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove information.

Top-mounting of the Quintet cartridges is easy and secure using the screws supplied. The aluminuim frame has threaded mounting holes and is fitted easily with the 5mm or 7mm screws depending on the thickness of the headshell.

The Quintet series' right angles, straight lines, stylus visibility and ample distance between the record surface and the cartridge's bottom will make it easy to mount and align the cartridge and tonearm correctly. The Quintet Series gives excellent results with most common tonearms.

    Schubert: Trout Quintet

Sviatoslav Richter is universally acknowledged to be one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, renowned for his virtuoso technique and the depth of his interpretations. Dmitri Shostakovich said about him: "Richter is an extraordinary phenomenon. The enormity of his talent staggers and enraptures. All the phenomena of musical art are accessible to him." He trained at the Moscow Conservatory under Heinrich Neuhaus, who considered Richter "already a complete artist, who had the ability to build a piece so that it seemed to lie before him like an immense landscape, revealed to the eye at a single glance.

The Borodin Quartet was founded in 1945 at the Moscow Conservatoire - the first cellist a certain Mstislav Rostropovich was replaced after few weeks by Valentin Berlinsky - was also close to Shostakovich, who personally consulted them on each of his quartets. The Borodin Quartet, celebrated for penetrating phrase and warm sound, was Richter favorite chamber music partner.

Georg Hörtnagel is a German double bassist who used to play with Bayerische Staatsoper during the Georg Solti era.

About this Austrian live recording from June 1980 GRAMOPHONE said: "This is a performance of high quality. Sviatoslav Richter in particular precisely catches the cheerful mood of the music and the underlying shadows of which one should sometimes be conscious, and he plays those simple tunes in octaves so freshly that you'd think he'd only just discovered their charms."

Relaxin' is the second classic album to be issued from the famed extended 1956 recording sessions of the Miles Davis Quintet (Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones). The set is notable for Miles' mastery with a mute as he he only plays open here on Dizzy Gillespie's Woody'n You, the emerging talent of a young John Coltrane and the strength and subtlety of the Red Garland led rhythm section. One of Davis' brightest outings featuring such memorable numbers as If I Were A Bell, It Could Happen To You and I Could Write A Book among others.

Schubert: String Quintet in C D956

When not composing songs, Franz Schubert was most at home with chamber music, not because he was a miniaturist, but because his most profound thoughts were most readily contained by smaller, more concentrated ensembles. His Quintet in C--by far the great work ever written for a string quartet with an extra cello--shows him at his summit with an ethereal second movement that often communicates the sense of spiritual suspended animation that the minimalists strive for but don't often achieve. The Emerson Quartet might seem a bit edgy for this assignment, but instead, the quartet delivers one of the best recordings of its career. Instead of just being swept away by its rapturous lyricism, the quartet probes the emotional depths and meaning of the music's gestures in concentrated, deeply felt performances. The piece is clearly a particular favorite of guest cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (he has recorded it several times before), but like most good chamber players, his presence isn't heard so much as it's felt. Perhaps he is responsible for the particular warmth of this performance. --David Patrick Stearns

Schubert - Trout Quintet (Speakers Corner)

In the summer of 1819, Franz Schubert stayed in the Austrian town of Steyr where he began work on the composition of the five-movement Piano Quintet in A major, op. 114 (D 667) which was commissioned by the cellist Sylvester Paumgartner. The work was completed in the autumn and soon achieved great popularity under the name of Trout Quintet, which it owes to the Andantino fourth movement - a set of variations on the song of the same name.
The work has remained highly popular right up to the present day and so it comes as no surprise to find this highly praised recording, made with such renowned artists as the pianist Clifford Curzon, the violinist Willi Boskovsky and other members of the Vienna Octet, being released once again.

The ensembles refreshing performance reflects the sparkling lightness and virtuosity of the work. The well-balanced recording with its full tone certainly deserves a place in every music lovers collection.

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Schubert: Trout Quintet (Speakers Corner) (Columbia)

Ever since its foundation by Rudolf Serkin in 1950, the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont, USA has acted as a refuge, oasis and melting pot for promising composers and performers of the times. And to this very day, young musicians from all over the globe come together for seven weeks to test their prowess, to learn from one another, and to receive tips and final polish from more experienced colleagues, quite in the spirit and traditions of this summer academy.

Rudolf Serkin himself not only stood behind this particular recording of Schubert's Trout but also took over the piano part. His renowned crisp and precise style of playing draws the four string players into the eddies of the first movement and causes the lively rising and falling chains of chords to whirl through the swiftly changing harmonies. The strings nestle together as though magnetised, striking out in broad arches of melody, then changing as quick as a flash from the role as soloists to pulsating accompanists who are always joyfully prepared to catch on to a new melody in the part writing. Both the Andante and the fourth movement, a theme and variations on Schubert's lied The Trout which lends its name to the work, flow along with a highly cultivated tone that is mellow yet not over-sweet. The dancelike Finale is fresh and exciting, with the musicians taking up repeats of musical material from the previous movements and thus imparting a cyclical effect to the work. This festive Schubertiade from the heart of chamber music will certainly have delighted maestro Schubert.

    Musicians:

    • Rudolf Serkin (piano)

    • Jaime Laredo (violin)

    • Philipp Naegele (viola)

    • Leslie Parnas (cello)

    • Julius Levine (bass)

Workin' With the Miles Davis Quintet (Awaiting Repress)

Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the 3rd in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. This is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, Ahmad's Blues. Miles is the sole survivor of this quintet but the music made in the mid-50's period will live forever. The excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles' poignancy and intense swing. Recording engineered by Rudy Van Gelder.

Dvorak: String Quintet In G Major (Speakers Corner)

A perusal of string quintets throughout history leaves one with the impression that their creators wish to bestow a powerful impact upon the small group of musicians. And it is no different with Dvoák's Quintet in G major: a double bass, instead of the usual second cello, paints with broad strokes in the lengthy score whose first movement almost takes on symphonic dimensions.

Here, the insistent, broad theme is presented in snappy cascades of sound. The cantilena, supported by a scurrying second subject, is followed by a frenzied Scherzo, which is steeped in Czech folk music under Dvoák's distinctive style. The third movement (Poco andante) is highly meditative and is constructed with layers of one and the same basic motif, which soon is intensified with pulsating quavers and finally evolves in rising melodic elements.

The Finale is filled with fresh melodies and spiced with subtle motivic development, which is pleasant on the ear in all its complexity. It is not surprising, therefore, that Dvoák won an important prize for his Quintet.

A Blue Note essential, Blown' The Blue Away by the Horace Silver Quintet & Trio, is part of the Blue Note 75 anniversary vinyl.

Everyone's favorite Horace Silver record featured the classic quintet with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook. The title tune, the beautiful ballad Peace and the soulful Sister Sadie are now standards in the jazz canon. Even given Silver's astonishing track record, this one stands out.

    Soul Junction

Though it was recorded in 1957 (on the same day as his All Mornin' Long LP), Soul Junction was not released until 1960 on the Prestige label.
Featuring the fine tenor work of his fellow Miles Davis Quintet alum, John Coltrane, and the blazing trumpet of Donald Byrd, Soul Junction is one
of Garland's finest releases as a band leader. The center piece is the 16-minute long title track which features a stunning, mellow and bluesy solo from Red himself.

    The Mono Singles '68 - '72

Texas-bred singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Doug Sahm was one of the most important musicians ever to emerge from the Lone Star state, and an inspiration to multiple generations of roots-conscious rock 'n' rollers. Sahm did much of his most beloved work as leader of the seminal Sir Douglas Quintet, the audaciously eclectic band that first burst onto the national scene in 1965. With trusty sidekick Augie Meyers providing distinctive support on the Vox organ, the Quintet delivered an infectious, eclectic mix that encompassed Tex-Mex border pop, raw garage-rock, hipster honky-tonk, horn-driven R&B and more.

The Sir Douglas Quintet's most productive and influential period was its late-'60s/early-'70s stint with Mercury Records and its sister labels Smash and Philips. That period saw the SDQ relocate from Texas to San Francisco and record some of their most enduring and adventurous music. And that music never sounded better than on the mono mixes that graced the singles that the band released during that period, which are collected on this deluxe set.

The Mono Singles' 22 songs include the band's 1969 signature smash Mendocino, along with such Sahm standards as At the Crossroads, Dynamite Woman, Nuevo Laredo, Texas Me, And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down, Michoacan and his heartfelt rendition of Freddy Fender's Wasted Days, Wasted Nights, plus a selection of rare non-album B-sides. The collection also features Sahm's historic Nashville recording Be Real, which he released under the pseudonym Wayne Douglas in an attempt to break into the conservative mainstream country market.

This unique collection has been sourced from the original analog mono masters. The high-definition vinyl 2-LP set comes with extensive liner notes and lavish artwork.
