Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star

Limited Edition Two-Tone Black On Black Picture Disc

Universal Music Enterprises (UMe) will continue its "Respect the Classics" tribute to many of hip-hop's finest with the vinyl release of rap icon Talib Kweli's
four historic Rawkus Records albums, including the underground classic, Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star, in a limited edition two-tone black on black
    picture disc.

Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star was originally released on August 18, 1998, to critical acclaim. The title is a reference to the Black Star Line, a shipping
company founded by Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey. The album deals with modern-day issues, philosophies and life in Brooklyn. The two MCs had
planned to release solo albums around the same time, but decided instead to collaborate on a full-length album. The first single, "Definition (song)," is a
reaction to hip-hop's fascination with death, dedicated to both Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., with a chorus that gives a nod to Boogie Down
Productions' "Stop the Violence." "Children's Story" is a re-imagination of the Slick Rick original, featuring Mos Def cautioning against materialism. The
second single, "Respiration," featuring Common, includes a Hi-Tek produced beat that samples Don Randi's "The Fox" and another from the hip-hop
documentary Style Wars. The track offers a melancholy ode to city life, with references to organic life functions such as breathing, eating and sleeping,
but with an ominous edge, as Kweli raps about "sitting on shitty steps/we stooped to new lows, hell froze/the night the city slept." The album peaked at
No. 53 on the Billboard Top 200 and No. 13 on the Hip-Hop Albums chart, but has become considered a classic since then.

    The Chronic

Ranked 137/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

    Digitally Remastered/EXPLICIT VERSION

The Chronic is the solo debut album of American hip hop artist Dr. Dre, released December 15, 1992, on his own record label Death Row Records, and distributed by Priority Records. Recording sessions for the album took place in June 1992 at Death Row Studios in Los Angeles and at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. The album is named after a slang term for high-grade marijuana, and its cover is an homage to Zig-Zag rolling papers. It was recorded by Dr. Dre following his departure from hip hop group N.W.A and its label Ruthless Records over a financial dispute, and consequently features both subtle and direct insults at Ruthless and its owner, former N.W.A-member Eazy-E. Although a solo album, it features many appearances by Snoop Dogg, who used the album as a launch pad for his own solo career.

Upon its release, The Chronic received positive reviews from most music critics and earned considerable sales success. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and has sold over three million copies, which led to Dr. Dre becoming one of the top ten best-selling American performing artists of 1993. Dr. Dre's production has been noted for founding and popularizing the G-funk sub-genre within gangsta rap. The Chronic has been widely regarded as one of the most important and influential albums of the 1990s and regarded by many fans and peers to be one of the most well-produced hip hop albums of all time.

Ranked 302/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Eminem's masterful second record has the chops and the credentials to go along with it. The Marshall Mathers LP won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, The Real Slim Shady won the Grammy for Best Rap Solo Performance and the record was also nominated for the Grammy for Album Of The Year. Expanding upon his debut, Eminem's follow-up is both funnier and darker than his debut and the production is nearly as evocative as the raps, with liquid basslines, stuttering rhythms, slight sound effects and spacious soundscapes. Reissued here on Double Vinyl LP by Universal Records.

House of Pain was an Irish-styled American hip-hop group who released three albums in the 90's. Rapper Everlast teamed up with DJ Lethal and high school friend Danny Boy to form House of Pain. The group was signed to Tommy Boy Records, and their self-titled debut album (1992) went multi-platinum, spawning the successful DJ Muggs' (Cypress Hill) produced single Jump Around.

Fashioning themselves as rowdy Irish-American hooligans, they toured with various rap and alternative-rock bands after their breakthrough. You can also find them on the influential 1993 rock-rap collaborative Judgment Night movie soundtrack on which they perform a track together with Helmet. Put on your shit kickers and kick some...

Ranked 359/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

More ambitious and hook driven then their debut album, 2000's Stankonia is a trippy sort of technopsychedelic funk. Blending elements of hip-hop, alternative rap, southern rap and dirty south music with electronica and psychedelia earned the duo critical acclaim and broad audience appeal.

Rap duo Havoc and Prodigy aka Mobb Deep from Queensbridge, Queens, New York returned in 2001 with their 5th album. Resurfacing, after recording Murda Muzik, this time they approached the rap-scene differently, moving away from the minimalistic stripped-down heavy violence hip/hop.

Center of attention during the release of Infamy was the beef between Jay-Z and Prodigy. During the time of release Prodigy (of Mobb Deep) had been the center of Jay-Z's attack on his track The Takeover and Mobb Deep cut the track Crawlin where Prodigy strikes back on Jay-Z calling him H to the know. Tracks like The Learning (Burn) featuring Noyd, Kill That Nigga and productions from Scott Storch (Dr. Dre/Nas/50 Cent) for Live Foul still display the dark beats and straight-up street rhymes Mobb Deep are known for.

The first single of the album was the track Hey Luv featuring R&B group 112. Infamy sold over 800.000 copies in the USA alone, reached #26 in the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

Powered by the massive hit single No Diggity, Another Level is arguably the best album created by Teddy Riley, the leader of Blackstreet. This was the first album with new members Eric Williams and Mark Middleton. They joined the group after replacing departed members Dave Hollister and Levi Little.

Another Level is the second album by American R&B group. Released in 1996, it reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, and No. 1 on the Top R&B Albums chart for five weeks and has sold over 4 million copies.

Teddy Riley was a very influential producer back in the days. He invented a whole new sound, a combination of soul harmonies, rap breaks and hip-hop beats called new jack swing. He links up to the drum-machine and creates beats, synthesizer chords, and uses his voice to make maximum impact with minimum presence. Giving his tracks a sleek leanness to it.

But even so, the key to success is definitely Riley's songwriting skills, which are always catchy and inventive, whether he is writing ballads or party jams.

    Medicine Show #9 (Nittyville)

Unique silk screened artwork on every cover making each album one of a kind!

Originally launched as a one-a-month, 12-part series, Medicine Show #9 is the first to break the chronology.

Nittyville is also perhaps the most traditional of the series, and we make no bones about it: one MC, one producer, and a rap record all about stunts, blunts and hip-hop.

As for Channel 85, it is far off most dials. This albums concept TV station runs one show only: the comic-drama, reality-musical called Nittyville, featuring Frank, MED, Oh No, Madlib, and a supporting cast of extras.

The album is 14 tracks including 10 rap tracks, 4 interludes, and runs 43 minutes.

THE LIMITED EDITION 3LP VINYL will contain the album on 2 LPs and a 3rd disc of non-album tracks. The covers will be hand silk screened by Hit+Run with artwork from Gustavo Eandi and Jeff Jank, creating one- of-a-kind artwork on every sleeve.

    CrazySexyCool

On their second album, TLC downplay their overt rap connections, recording a smooth, seductive collection of contemporary soul reminiscent of both Philly soul and Prince, powered by new jack and hip-hop beats. Lisa Lopes contributes the occasional rap, but the majority of CrazySexyCool belongs to Tionne Watkins and Rozonda Thomas. While they aren't the most accomplished vocalists -- they have a tendency to be just slightly off-key -- the material they sing is consistently strong. As the cover of Prince's ''If I Was Your Girlfriend'' indicates, TLC favor erotic, mid-tempo funk. Yet the group removes any of the psychosexual complexities of Prince's songs, leaving a batch of sexy material that just sounds good, especially the hit singles. Both ''Creep'' and ''Red Light Special'' have a deep groove that accentuates the slinky hooks, but it's ''Waterfalls,'' with its gently insistent horns and guitar lines and instantly memorable chorus, that ranks as one of the classic R&B songs of the '90s.

    Dog Beats EP

One of the most legendary and sought-after albums to ever come out of Detroit in the last 30 years, Dog Beats returns to record bins everywhere this spring! Representing the very first official release from the group that would become INSANE CLOWN POSSE, Dog Beats was released when the group were still in their teens and calling themselves Inner City Posse. This EP was sold on the streets of Detroit and original cassette copies now fetch an average of $2,000 on eBay. Despite a mail-order-only CD reissue around 2000, Dog Beats has been out of circulation ever since and has NEVER BEFORE BEEN RELEASED NATIONALLY! This is truly a historic piece of Midwest hip-hop that shows the humor, rap skills, and never-say-die enthusiasm that would eventually catapult INSANE CLOWN POSSE (the band changed their name shortly after the release of Dog Beats) into the worldwide pop culture and underground icons they are today. This is where the story of ICP begins ... and is a MUST OWN for all hip-hop fans!

    From Chaos (Awaiting Repress)

Upon 311's vigorous return, vocalist S.A. Martinez declares, I'm on a new high with a pen and a pad, and for fun I attend a jam that's super bad. While the members of the Omaha-bred quintet aren't lyrical rocket scientists, these disciples of positivity have nonetheless re-emerged on a new high with a jam that's super bad. From Chaos astonishes and impresses with considerable energy and focus, proving itself as the album 311 has always been capable of making. With Tim Mahoney's razor-edged riffing and Nick Hexum and Martinez's super-charged vocals, their Volcano label debut rocks harder and rides smoother than each preceding effort.

Amidst their signature hip-hop/heavy rock/reggae hybrid, 311 additionally blends surf guitar over jungle beats, merges punk guitar with dancehall, and introduces ska, à la Hexum's autobiographical I'll Be Here Awhile, to their sonic repertoire. Tracks such as the carpe diem-inspired Wake Your Mind Up and the boastful Sick Tight prove the quintet hasn't forsaken their old-school formula, while the amorous Amber, perhaps their most charming composition, exhibits a melodic versatility and musical ambition unlike many of their pigeonholed contemporaries. Under the technical lead of veteran producer and engineer Ron Saint Germain (aka Saint), From Chaos effectively captures the energy of the live shows, per bassist P-Nut, and despite the band's growing musical complexity, each selection remains a perfect candidate for the well-traveled road ahead. Drummer Chad Sexton affirms it's our best-performed record, and despite the album's semi-ironic title, he couldn't be more right. Whether employing the computer or stereo for amusement, From Chaos is the sonic cornerstone for remarkably original rap-metal. ~ Jacob N. Lunders, Rovi

    Reflection Eternal

Universal Music Enterprises Continues Its "Respect The Classics" Tribute To Many Of Hip-hop's Finest With The Vinyl Reissue Of Rap Icon Talib Kweli's
    Historic Rawkus Records Catalog

After releasing a handful of essential 12s on various Rawkus Records projects in the late '90s, Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek were on the verge of becoming one of hip-hop's best-kept secrets. Yet their original incarnation as a duo expanded into a triumvirate with the inclusion of Mos Def and transformed their eventual manifestation into Black Star, thwarting their initial bid for acclaim. While Kweli's stardom may have been initially eclipsed by his more charismatic cohort, Mos Def, Reflection Eternal houses enough merit to establish Talib as one of this generation's most poetic MCs. Kweli is a rare MC, as his lyricism resounds with a knowledge that transcends his still tender age. He does not aspire to reprogram the masses with this album, just rehabilitate them, as he laments on The Blast: They ask me what I'm writing for/I'm writing to show you what we fighting for. In an effort to celebrate life, Kweli breaks down hip-hop's obsession with death on Good Mourning and Too Late. But it is his varied lyrical content that is most inspiring, effortlessly transitioning from the poignant circle-of-life epic For Women to the rugged Some Kind of Wonderful and Down for the Count, featuring Rah Digga and Xzibit. While the unassuming, largely minimalist grooves that Hi-Tek supplied on Black Star's debut longed for a dramatic flair, he displays a remarkable maturation on Reflection Eternal. In fact, Tek's loping keyboard wails, soulful staccato claps, and shimmering piano loops are often sublime in their arrangement and outcome. Though Kweli and Hi-Tek's debut harbors over-ambitious tendencies, clocking in at over 70 minutes in length, they are a duo that will undoubtedly stain their memory into hip-hop's collective memory with this noteworthy debut. Welcome to the new generation of Native Tongue speaking.
