Ravel - Sheherazade / Berlioz - Les Nuits D'Ete (Speakers Corner)

At the time when Ravel set down ShÉhÉrazade, and although he had already composed such works as Pavane pour une Infante defunte and Jeux d'eau, - regarded today as excellent - the young composer was still struggling for recognition. Five times he tried to win the prestigious Prix de Rome, France's highest musical award, but barely achieved more than limited acclaim.

Ravel's provocative assertion that he didn't follow any particular musical direction, but was an anarchist is reflected in his free, wonderfully interwoven composition ShÉhÉrazade. A touch of the Orient is entwined with late-romantic harmony and an impressionistic, modern brilliance, whose depth calls for and merits repeated listening.

Ravel shares the lot of a misunderstood genius with Hector Berlioz. Written in 1832, his cycle Les Nuits d'EtÉ, with its pulsating and arietta-like but also morbid and ghostly songs, provide a wonderful example of a composition from the French Romantic era. The present superb performance was highly acclaimed by producer and author G. A. Eckle, who stated »RÉgine Crespin is the embodiment of quality when it comes to French repertoire in her category

    About Speakers Corner

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Speakers Corner all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existant tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasise that Speakers Corner Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle. We have one digital recording in our catalogue (Alan Parsons / Eye In The Sky"), but even in this particular case we used the analogue tapes for cutting.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects - excluding the exception above - and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Prokofiev & Ravel Piano Concertos

Prokofiev's great Third Piano Concerto has been Martha Argerich's signature piece since she won competitions with it at the age of 16 in 1957. If you're used to Bryon Janis' reading on Mercury or have never heard Argerich play Prokofieff, you're in for a shock. The only other artist I can think of who played the Third with this kind of energy at this breakneck tempo was Prokofiev himself, and Prokofiev's performance is all speed and slop. Despite its power and pace, Argerich's is far more agile, deeply thought out, and various - built upon the precise articulation of rhythmic and dynamic contrasts. Be they fortissississimo or pianissississimo, presto or adagio, every note, every chord, every bravura run and leaping flourish is sounded with passion and precision. It's as if Argerich is uttering one long, complex, fully articulate sentence in one long thrilling breath. Abbado and the Berlin Phil keep up with her, though it often seems (as it often does with distinctive pianists in distinctive performances) as if Argerich is conducting as well as soloing. Full credit goes to DG's engineers, whose close miking of the piano perfectly serves the clarity of line and muscular poetry of Argerich's sensational reading. A must-own disc. - Jonathan Valin, The Absolute Sound, October 2011, Issue 216

Ravel Debussy - Ma Mere Nocturnos (Speakers Corner)

Ravel's ballet music Ma Mère l'Oye, originally written for piano, four hands, was inspired by Charles Perrault's fairy tale. Ravel mostly wrote music for small forms which is reflected by the short movements of the suite. The world renowned Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, led by the conductor best suited to this kind of music, Ernest Ansermet, bring out the vivacious and colourful elements of the work. The orchestra's timbre is well suited to the gentle shading of the music, as is shown in the final Jardin fÉerique.

Completed by Debussy in 1899, the three Nocturnes reveal the aesthetics of a composer who put Nature above Art. Debussy endeavoured to achieve a natural flow and consistency in his music without slavishly copying the sounds of nature. Although Nuages (Clouds), Fêtes (Festivals) and Sirènes (Sirents) are night pieces, they are seen with a view to light and shadow: two optic conditions that influence the music.

The artists give an amazingly transparent and differentiated performance of the music. The present recording should not be missed by any lover of Impressionist music.

Debussy - Nocturnes / Ravel - Daphnes et Chloe (Speakers Corner)

With his Nocturnes, Debussy's vision of music inspired by Nature enters a new sphere. His first multi-part orchestral work the composition was originally conceived for violin but was published as a vocal-symphonic work offers a wealth of subtleties as regards melody and sound coloring, the likes of which had never been heard before in Debussy's oeuvre. Unlike traditional orchestral writing, the woodwinds here provide vitality with a wide spectrum of tonal coloring while the strings unroll a dynamically finely graded carpet of sound. Absolutely innovative is the wordless female chorus in the third movement whose voices combine with the instruments to produce a mysterious tonal concoction.

Debussy's compatriot, Ravel, went to even greater lengths in his Daphnis and Chloe Suites. As the instrumental distribution leads one to suspect full orchestra plus 15 percussion instruments, chorus and wind machine the work is a full-fledged modern-age French choreographic symphony and one of the greatest compositions of its time. It is almost superfluous to mention that a thrilling performance of both works can only be achieved by the very best of symphony orchestras.

Chopin - Scherzo No. 3 / Brahms - Rhapsodies (Speakers Corner)

The debut recording by the Argentinian pianist Martha Argerich took the public by the storm all over the world - and the applause has still not subsided! A mere glance at the repertoire shows that she was reaching for the stars. To bring five composers together on an LP of roughly 45 minutes length means nothing other than speaking five different musical languages - and Martha Argerich proves herself a master of them all! The demonic opening of the Scherzo in C sharp minor gives way to an iridiscent dialogue which sings and sparkles beyond compare. The Barcarolle rocks gently along; Prokofiev's Toccata is filled with dynamic force and nervous agitation; Ravel's Jeux d'eau is pensive and introverted, with the water rippling in a circular motion. As a contrast, the two famous Brahms Rhapsodies are performed with passion, impetuosity and occasionally the required heaviness.

This recording is surely one of the brightest candles to burn anew on Deutsche Grammophon's birthday cake.

This record was part of the 3-LP Set "The Conductors" and is now available again.

    Tchaikovsky: Klavierkonzert

A win at the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1965, at age 24, officially put Martha Argerich on the musical map. An exciting and mercurial artist, Argerich has recorded extensively throughout a career that has encompassed works by Bach through Beethoven, Schumann, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel and Bartók among others.

Here, the multiple Grammy-winner and 2012 Gramophone Hall of Fame inducted Argentinian pianist performs Tchaikovsky's Concerto No. 1 In B Flat Minor For Piano & Orchestra, Op. 23 with accompaniment from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as conducted by Charles Dutoit. "The very fine sound of the horns right at the start augurs well and the wonderful weight and quality of Martha Argerich's opening if chords suggest that at any rate one need have no worries about the quality of this recording...The present record is really superb. So is Argerich, giving a performance of great range and of much subtlety...Praise must go, too, to the conductor, Dutoit who accompanies excellently and with notably good phrasing." - Gramophone/1971

    Ravel - Bolero (Speakers Corner)

Among the innumerable recordings of Maurice Ravel's BolÉro, the present one made by DECCA with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Ernest Ansermet is of particular note. The impressive mounting crescendo over an ostinato bass, leading through the work from the very first bar right up to the last note, goes hand in hand with ever increasing intensity and excitement and hardly permits the listener to draw a breath. As in the BolÉro, Ravel's La Valse, a choreographed poem for orchestra composed in 1920, is based on a single rhythmic idea, the Viennese waltz, which lends the work increasing impetus throughout the course of the music.

Although Arthur Honegger's Pacific 231, composed in 1923 and dedicated to Ernest Ansermet, is more modern and has a more complex structure, here too a great arc of tension determines the progress of the music until shortly before the end. The orchestra accelerates in tempo and then decelerates - due to the motivic writing - towards the end thus evoking the sound of a locomotive: the Pacific 231 namely.

The great success of the first performance of Paul Dukas's L'Apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer's Apprentice) in 1897, a scherzo composed in 1895 and based on a ballad by Goethe, certainly comes as no surprise when one listens to this recording by the OSR under Ansermet. The composition is filled with a wealth of surprising moments which are presented here with exactitude and subtlety in even the tiniest detail.

Another sonic and musical blockbuster from the unbeatable combo of Reiner and RCA (and Mohr & Layton). Recorded in 1957 at Chicago's Orchestra Hall; the original analog session tapes were used in mastering for LPs and SACDS. Mussorgsky's inspiration for Pictures was the death of his dear friend, the architect and visual artist Victor Hartman. Having died at age 39, Hartman had not yet had the opportunity to realize any of his architectural visions, and Mussorgsky was angered that his friend would have no legacy. The Architects' Society arranged an exhibition of some of Hartman's sketches - some of architecture, others of characters or scenes from everyday life. The tribute was enough to give Mussorgsky ideas for his composition, but not enough to give Hartman any lasting place in history. Today, of all of the sketches that were captured in music, only six can be positively identified.

The piece is known today primarily through the orchestral version created by Maurice Ravel in 1922. In fact, the work had already been orchestrated multiple times, by a variety of lesser names. Some conductors today find that Ravel's version, in spite of its color, sacrifices some of the coarse nature inherent in Mussorgsky's piano original. Furthermore, Ravel worked from Rimsky-Korsakov's edited version of the piano part - the only one available at the time - which changed some notes and rhythms.

None of the orchestrations, however, change the fundamental spirit of the piece. Mussorgsky imagines himself making his way down the hallway that showcased his late friend's work, with his stately procession represented by the Promenade that opens the piece and returns several times. Upon stopping at each image, he reflects on what he sees. Between the early movements, the promenade returns regularly, as Mussorgsky is conscious of moving from one scene to the next. As the work progresses, however, he becomes less aware of the interval between pictures, and more immersed in the continuous psychological experience of moving from one state of mind to the next. By the end, the composer sees himself transformed by the connection with Hartman through his visual expressions of Russian pride and humanity.

Lalo: Symphonie Espagnole / Ravel: Tzigane (Speakers Corner)

Whenever the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Ernest Ansermet, their conductor of many years standing, entered the hall for a recording session, all lovers of high quality LPs looked forward to yet another addition to their collection. And when this wonderful ensemble was joined by such a unique artist as Ruggiero Ricci, who had appeared in the Carnegie Hall at the early age of nine, then their joy knew no bounds. The present re-release offers all fans of fiery rhythms and sumptous symphonic sound a wonderful opportunity to revel in a musical treat in audiophile quality.

Lalo's highly virtuosic and therefore seldom performed Symphonie espagnole glows with a rich sound palette full of southern temperament as only a large orchestra can. Ruggiero Ricci rivets the listener's attention with his pithy tone, his amazing cascades of sound and melancholy gypsy melodies.
For all those who cannot get enough of Ricci's captivating playing, a brilliant encore is provided by Ravel's Tzigane - a true showpiece of 20th-century violin repertory.

Sheer delight for the ears and the soul - and certainly not limited to fans of virtuoso violin playing.

A simple product with a simple aim: high quality sound that's portable.
    - John H. Darko on digitalaudioreview.net

The Traveller sets a new standard in the league of mobile headphone amplifiers. We have designed it for a generation who is constantly on the move: no matter if at home, in the office or when travelling - this elegant companion will always give you a unique sound experience, everywhere. And the Traveller lives up to even the highest aesthetic demands.

On the go around the clock and at home wherever the pulse of life can be felt - this is you. With the pristine sound of your music in your ears the world is at your feet, and you breathe in life to the fullest. For this purpose our Traveller is just the right choice: despite its compact size, it will always elate you with excellent sound quality on all your short and long voyages. Moreover, it does not only sound phenomenal, but even cuts a fine figure.

    A comfortable companion

Besides its practical size and ease of use, we also focus on outstanding sound quality in our mobile companion - anytime, anywhere. This is the result of our decades of experience in the audio sector and our infinite passion for music. First-class components and a sophisticated circuit design are self-evident.

The Traveller's intuitive handling requires only two pushbuttons. The volume control works electronically and is therefore utterly precise, even down to the lowest levels. This is due to a microprocessor-controlled passive resistor network which prevents sonic losses. The set volume levels is saved automatically when turning the unit off. With a maximum battery run-time of more than 20 hours the music won't stop playing even on the longest flights. Moreover our Traveller is compatible with all players.

The exceptionally transparent sound is provided by the discrete zero global feedback output stage. Headphones and players find contact via solid mini jack sockets from Lumberg. The voltage gain is effected by audiophile components from Analog Devices and Burr Brown.

Flexibility and superb audio quality on life's colourful roads

This fully analogue headphone amplifier will drive even demanding headphones hands down and may also double quite easily as a preamp for active loudspeakers. This is made possible by two pairs of parallel inputs and outputs plus another input and output socket on the the front and rear panel. Of course, there are no cables visible on the faceplate.

This device is also ideally suited for persons with hearing impairments: when needed, the so-called Center Adjust function of the Traveller optimises the imaging of the acoustical centre. That way every music lover can level out unevenly recorded source signals or listening differences between the right and left ear.

An audiophile mini jack cable from Audictive and a charging cable are included in the delivery, the charging socket complies with the Micro USB standard.

    Deodato 2 (Speakers Corner)

In his early years, Deodato, 'the gift of God', cultivated a highly original art of give and take in his music. His score for Stanley Kubrick's science fiction film A Space Odyssey 2001 - a funky, jazzed-up adaptation of Richard Strauss's bombastic orchestral work Also sprach Zarathustra - opened the ears of innumerable cinema-goers to classical music. On the present album Deodato again rocks and grooves with works from past eras: Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue is reworked rhythmically and enriched, while Ravel's Pavane unfolds hesitatingly over a velvety carpet of sound. And why not win new fans for major musical works? Deodato, the master, and his complex musical apparatus impart a true Latin feeling to these covered works.

The 'new' classic Nights In White Satin too, one of the most congenial gigantic hits from the 60s, is staged by Deodato as a miniature slow rock drama just as perfectly as he cultivates his own very pure funky style (Super Strut). In Deodato's arrangements, the powerful instrumental forces open out almost effortlessly and evolve into a gentle flow of sheer pleasure. Everything appears to be simple, although nothing is simple! And therein lies the uniqueness of 'the gift of God'.

    Musicians:

    • Eumir Deodato (keyboards)

    • Wayne Andre (trombone)

    • Joe Temperley (bassoon)
