    In Person (Pure Pleasure)

Note: This issue is as the original vinyl album issue & contains all the dialogue from Ray and the stage promoter, along with audience participation.

I bought this LP, of the Atlanta concert, in 1960. It knocked me out then, and it knocks me out now. For me, this IS Ray Charles. In the intro to Night Time Is The Right Time Ray says, »... and Miss Marjorie Hendricks will help us out on vocals ...«, and boy, does she help out! Turn up the volume and strap yourself down.
The greatness of this album. Ray was touring with his band in the 50's, and they played at a concert in Herndon Stadium, Atlanta. An engineer at radio station WAOK recorded the occasion on a one track tape recorder using a single microphone. The recording was later played over the air. The response of the radio audience was overwhelming, resulting in the ultimate release of the Atlantic album. It is one of the most extraordinary albums of all time. First, the recording is amazing considering how it was recorded. The band is heard with perfect clarity and balance, and the audience is also picked up, and you can hear the shouting, whooping, the give and take with the audience, and the extraordinary energy in what was a typical concert of Ray Charles playing to his own audience. Many of the tunes were or became classics, known to every funk and blues musician in the country and to most of the population at large. Ray Charles was revered like no other musician.

This is the most cathartic of all Ray Charles' recordings. On two tracks, The Right Time and Tell The Truth-both shared with the Raelettes' lead singer, Marjorie Hendricks-the music transcends art to become powerfully shamanistic. It remains one of the greatest rhythm and blues albums of all time.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Aretha Live At Fillmore West

Aretha Franklin's 1971 album Live at Fillmore West was a seminal soul breakthrough. It finally cemented her status beyond soul audiences and it matched her with a phenomenal rhythm section in King Curtis and the Kingpins. Franklin adroitly mixed pop, rock, and soul material throughout the three nights, including Stephen Stills' ''Love The One You're With,'' and Bread's ''Make It With You,'' and the Beatles' ''Eleanor Rigby,'' as well as true favorites ''Respect,'' ''Don't Play That Song,'' and ''Spirit in the Dark,'' which brought Ray Charles out of the audience for a spirited duet. Deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring photos from the concert and new liner notes by Down Beat contributor Mitch Myers (including fresh interviews with original album producers Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin). Genius Loves Company

    Half-speed mastered from original tapes.

The last studio album completed by the untouchable Ray Charles before his death. Charles sings a dozen duets with a dazzling array of guest artists from virtually every genre. »We cover it all,« Charles said, »from country to R&B, pop, rock and blues. I've never let them put me in a little box, and this (record) expresses that open feeling. A beautiful song is a beautiful song - and to sing with so many beautiful singers is a blessing from God.« Genius Loves Company stands as a remarkable hallmark in a remarkable career, including duets with Norah Jones, Elton John, Van Morrison, Diana Krall, Natalie Cole, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Willie Nelson, Michael McDonald, B.B. King, Gladys Knight and Johnny Mathis.

Mastered for Pure Audiophile Records by Stan Ricker from half-inch analog tape at 30 inches per second.

Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music

    Import

Less modern for its country-R&B blend (Elvis Presley and company did it in 1955) and lushly produced C&W tone (the Nashville sound cropped up in the late '50s) than for its place as a high-profile crossover hit, Modern Sounds in Country and Western fit right in with Ray Charles' expansive musical ways while on the Atlantic label in the '50s. In need of even more room to explore, Charles signed with ABC Paramount and eventually took full advantage of his contract's full artistic freedom clause with this collection of revamped country classics.

Covering a period from 1939 to the early '60s, the 12 tracks here touch on old-timey fare (Floyd Tillman's It Makes No Difference to Me Now), honky tonk (three Hank Williams songs), and early countrypolitan (Don Gibson's I Can't Stop Loving You). Along with a Top Ten go at Eddy Arnold's You Don't Know Me, the Gibson cover helped the album remain at the top of the pop charts for nearly three months and brought Charles international fame. Above a mix of swinging big band charts by Gerald Wilson and strings and choir backdrops from Marty Paich, Charles' intones the sleepy-blue nuances of country crooners while still giving the songs a needed kick with his gospel outbursts. No pedal steel or fiddles here, just a fine store of inimitable interpretations.

The Genius After Hours (Speakers Corner)

No ifs and buts! Ray Charles belongs in every jazz collection. Friends of pure jazz tend to forget this in the light of his numerous hits in categories such as gentle ballads, and even country and western songs, and rhythm'n'blues during the more than 60 years of Charles' extremely successful (also financially speaking) career.

The producer Neshui Ertegun gathered together a star-studded cast for this Atlantic Records studio recording. There was David Newman on the tenor sax, Joe Harris on the drums, and even Oscar Pettiford on the bass. Not forgetting Ray Charles himself who was an excellent jazz pianist.

The studio was saturated with the blues! A relaxed mood prevailed, just as one might imagine it. The musicians came to the studio after a concert, they were completely drained, worn out, exhausted: they had the blues and then they played the blues.

Even a standard work such as Gershwin's The Man I Love was turned into an elegy. Only Ain't Misbehavin', which reminds one more of Earl Hines than Fats Waller, and Charlesville - a fast blues number - were treated to a change of tempo.

The Genius After Hours is a self-portrait that exhibits the less well-known talents of this exceptional artist during the second half of the last century. It makes great listening for all lovers of jazz, soul, blues, rhythm'n'blues, country and western, pop, funk You name it, Charles has got it!

    Musicians:

    • Ray Charles (piano)
    • Dave 'Fathead' Newman (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone)
    • Emmott Dennis (bassoon)
    • Joseph Bridgewater, John Hunt (trumpet)
    • Roosevelt Sheffield, Oscar Pettiford (bass)
    • Joe Harris, William Peebles (drums)

Recording: April 1956 and September 1957 in New York City in mono

Production: Nesuhi Ertegun & Jerry Wexler

Genius Loves Company (10th Anniversary) (Awaiting Repress)

Upon its release in 2004, few could have predicted the extraordinary, game-changing effect that Ray Charles' final recording would have on both his career and the industry as a whole. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the legend's milestone recording, Concord/Hear Music will release a special 2LP, 45RPM, 180-gram Vinyl Edition.

One of Charles' most inspirational and historically significant albums, Genius Loves Company captures the genius of the music icon in his last studio recording pairing him with legendary guest artists including Norah Jones, Diana Krall, James Taylor, Elton John, Willie Nelson and Bonnie Raitt to name a few. The album went on to receive an astounding 8 GRAMMY® Awards, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. To help launch a then-groundbreaking consumer marketing campaign, Genius Loves Company was tapped as the first original release through the Starbucks Hear Music imprint in conjunction with Concord Music Group. Since its release on August 31st, 2004, Genius Loves Company has been certified multi-platinum with worldwide sales in excess of 5 million copies.

Produced by John Burk, Concord Music Group's chief creative officer, and co-produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, Genius Loves Company garnered critical acclaim upon its release. NPR All Things Considered hailed, "It's got flashes of fire you wouldn't expect from such a setting, gems of phrasing that remind you how Ray Charles transformed the wreckage of heartbreak into poignant sound," and Rolling Stone added, "the tone is reverential and warm, as the Genius sings "

"Ray was shocked that these people wanted to sing with him," recalls Ray Charles Foundation president Valerie Ervin. "He just didn't understand the magnitude of where he was in the industry. As weak as he became he made sure he gave his best for every artist that was there for him."

"Ray Charles was one of those rare artists who, throughout his incredible career, had far-reaching impact that forever changed the conventions of popular music as well as the music business," said Concord Music Group chief creative officer John Burk. "Looking back at the last 10 years, it's clear that this album was certainly no exception. We are humbled, honored and blessed to have had the opportunity to work with such a musical giant, and we are eternally grateful to Ray for elevating both Concord Records and Hear Music to new heights, far beyond our wildest dreams ten years ago."

    Carney (200 Gram Vinyl)

Hit Maker And Musician's Musician Struck Chart Gold With 1972 Album Carney

Analogue Productions Reissue On 200-Gram Vinyl

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Master Tapes

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Heavyweight Tip-On Old-Style Jacket From Stoughton Printing

With his trademark top hat, hair well past his shoulders, a long, lush beard, an Oklahoma drawl and his fingers splashing two-fisted barrelhouse piano chords, future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell cut a flamboyant figure in the early 1970s. He recorded his first hit single Tight Rope with the release of his third, and most successful album Carney, in 1972, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.

Two years earlier Russell had already played on hundreds of songs as one of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. The Oklahoma-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader led Joe Cocker's band Mad Dogs & Englishmen, appeared at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh in New York City and composed numerous hits of his own. He was in Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Orchestra and played sessions for Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, the Ventures and the Monkees, among many others.

But it was the top-rated Carney, reissued here on an audibly exquisite 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions, that put Carney into the league of extraordinary musicians. Soulful roots-rock yields to dizzying psychedelia on this, Russell's most famous album. His all-time biggest hit, Tight Rope, leads to Out in the Woods, Cajun Love Song, This Masquerade, and more! No link in the reissue chain was sacrificed, making this outstanding reissue a true audiophile masterpiece. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio remastered the album from the original master tapes; plating and pressing took place at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, as benefits a stellar reissue, we packaged our version in a heavyweight old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.

Russell wrote scores of hits for others, among them Superstar, (written with Bonnie Bramlett) for the Carpenters, Delta Lady for Joe Cocker and This Masquerade, for George Benson. His own version of This Masquerade is featured on Carney. More than 100 acts recorded A Song for You, which Russell said he wrote in 10 minutes. Ray Charles' recording of the song in 1993 received a Grammy Award.

Sadly, Russell's life as a musical muse and performer ended with his death at 74 on Nov. 13, 2016, at his home in Nashville. He will be forever remembered for making a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.

with gospel most certainly began the American soul music movement. This modern form of R&B which would become
an American way of life forever etched itself in total with the release of his classic #1 hit single I Got a Woman from
his stunning debut 1957 album Ray Charles.

Fused with heavy blues, gospel and rock and roll, I Got a Woman was one of Ray's very first top charting hits
soon to be followed by other #1 smash hit singles like Mess Around and A Fool for You. More hit singles graced his first
album as well with Hallelujah I Love Her So, Ain't That Love and This Little Girl of Mine. The Ray Charles album itself
on its own merit is truly a Greatest Hits LP, whereby most of these early Ray Charles' hit tracks have been covered
hundreds of times by some of the most important voices in popular music, like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Steve
Miller Band, Van Morrison, Peggy Lee, Johnny Winter, Jerry Lee Lewis, Stevie Wonder and many others.

Also included on this debut masterpiece are some of Ray Charles' more definitive blues rockers like the powerful
Come Back Baby, the rockin' Greenbacks, the #1 blues rocker Mary Ann, and the brilliant soul sounds of Don't You
Know, Drown in My Own Tears and Losing Hand.

The Ray Charles album forever etched the name superstar and genius with Ray Charles as the LP reached the
upper rungs of the popular, jazz and R&B charts and has become an American institution which will forever stand the
test of time. Being one of his rarest LP's of his career, the magnificent album has not been officially released on vinyl
in over five decades and fetches hundreds of dollars for a mint used copy if you can even find one.

Friday Music is very honored to announce the first time ever 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl LP of the Ray Charles'
classic Ray Charles. As another installment in our treasured Ray Charles/Friday Music 180 Gram Audiophile Series, his
amazing debut LP is mastered from the original monophonic Atlantic Records' tapes by Joe Reagoso at Friday Music
Studios and at Capitol Mastering with Ron McMaster. This masterwork truly sounds exceptional and will become one
of the more important roots albums to be reissued in quite some time for the audiophile vinyl domain.

This limited edition release also comes with the original album cover graphics of Marvin Israel, featuring the
stunning liner notes by Guy Remark.

The album will be packaged in a poly bag to preserve the rich details of the legendary cover art as well as a poly

    Ray Charles & Betty Carter

One track - Baby, It's Cold Outside - will make this one easily worth the price of admission!

Whoa! Now we're getting into the big leagues. Ray Charles, cut from the original three-track tapes, pressed on 200-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. Yowsa! And not just any Ray Charles title, mind you. Ray Charles and Betty Carter! Analogue Productions has reissued a whole lot of classics - a whole lot - but there aren't many of 'em that are a much bigger deal than this.

This is such a romantic album. Such a warm album. Such a rich album. And, ooh, the sound! Turn the lights down. Grab that special someone. Drop the needle. And as our Acoustic Sounds/Analogue Productions owner would say, If nothing happens, don't blame the record!

Originally released in 1961 on ABC-Paramount, Ray Charles and Betty Carter features startling dynamics, with Marty Paich's arrangements showcasing both punchy brass and lush strings. The showstopper, Baby, It's Cold Outside, topped the R&B charts upon its release. And jazz singer Betty Carter's vocal prowess shines on Cocktails For Two and Alone Together. Ray Charles has never sounded more romantic.

    I Remember Brother Ray

David 'Fathead' Newmanï's warm tone, occasionally terse phrasing, and always heartfelt delivery placed him in high demand by artists as diverse as B.B. King, Herbie Mann, Jane Monheit, and Gregg Allman. With over twenty recordings to his name, I Remember Brother Ray stands as an understated highlight, a record that doesn't so much jump out at you as it does gently sidle up beside you and ingratiates itself with its warmth and affability. Newman got his first big break with Ray Charles in the early '50s, playing in his band from '54 through '64 and subsequently making numerous guest appearances over the years. And so Newman entered the studio of another legend, engineer Rudy Van Gelder just two months after Charles' death to record I Remember Brother Ray, a tribute to the jazzier side of a man who regarded himself as a jazz singer anyway.

The record evokes the ambience of a smoky bar in the early hours of the morning. Newman assembled a quintet as comfortable with the tender balladry of Georgia on My Mind as it is the soul-drenched blues of Drown in My Tears. Charles believed that the ability to play jazz permits the ability to cross over into other genres, and the playing on I Remember Brother Ray clearly supports his conviction.

While there were quite a few Ray Charles tributes, few equaled I Remember Brother Ray for its grace, integrity, honesty, and pure connection to the true essence of Charles' legacy.

    Tribute to Uncle Ray

Wonder's second LP, recorded and released when he was only 12 years old, is a tribute to Ray Charles. As the original liner notes state, Little Stevie Wonder, Tamla's 11-year-old musical genius, is blind, a similarity he shares with a famed musician and vocalist of today. Though this is perhaps not the most subtle of tribute albums and a clear cash in attempt from Motown, who were still looking for a way to market their new-found talent, the results are still fantastic. Little Stevie powers his way through a grip of Charles' classics as well as some original songs done in the Charles style and while the LP failed to score a hit, it's an enjoyable listen that shows a glimpse of the super star talent that was soon to emerge.

The King Of Rock & Roll's Debut 1956 Album

First Time 180 Gram Audiophile Beautiful Translucent Blue Vinyl & First Time Gatefold Cover Presentation

Impeccably Mastered By Joe Reagoso & Pressed At R.T.I.

Elvis Aaron Presley was born during the Great Depression into a poor family in Mississippi. They moved to Memphis during the early fifties, and as a struggling young truck driver, Elvis cut some demos as a gift for his beloved mother Gladys. These initial songs, of which he had only paid a few dollars to record, would become the catalyst that would kick-start the beginnings of a soon to be worldwide superstar unlike the world has ever known.

The folks at RCA Victor knew that this young fellow named Elvis was destined for super stardom. They quickly signed the legend to a long-term deal in 1956, and his first RCA Lp simply titled Elvis Presley forever etched The King Of Rock And Roll trademark to his name. He would eventually become the most successful solo artist of all time!

Easily the first top selling rock and pop albums of the fifties, Elvis Presley was a treasure trove of his first RCA sessions and Sun session and included such great tracks as his signature Blue Suede Shoes, the rock-a-billy smash Just Because & the stellar balladry of Blue Moon.

More great Elvis tunes abound as he pays tribute to The Drifters with a rockin' version of Money Honey and the Ray Charles' classic I Got A Woman.

Featuring 12 of his most familiar tunes the debut Elvis Presley album went on to become one of his most memorable titles in his huge arsenal of masterful rock and roll albums, as well as one of the most copied album covers of all time.

Thanks to his finest rock smashes like Tryin' To Get To You and the piano rocker One Sided Love Affair, this debut masterpiece was just what the fans were screaming for, as the entire album was built around the framework of his new and exciting rock trademark sound.

In honor of the Man, the Music, the Legend, the King Of Rock And Roll, Friday Music is very proud and honored to announce the first time limited Anniversary Edition 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of the RCA Victor classic Elvis Presley.

    The Genius Sings the Blues

Numbered Limited-Edition 180g LP from Mobile Fidelity

1961 Collection Gathers 12 Must-Have Songs from Charles' Peak Era

Mobile Fidelity Has Righted the Sonic Wrongs That Plagued Earlier Versions - You Won't Find a Better-Sounding Ray Charles LP

Genius doesnt even begin to describe the greatness of The Genius Sings the Blues. Comprised of a dozen songs Ray Charles made between 1952 and 1960, the collection was released in 1961 by Atlantic Records to counter the singers migration to rival ABC Paramount. What Atlantic originally underestimated is that the album contained many of Charles greatest works, all unified by their bluesy emotions and stirring arrangements. A classic of the soul and R&B canon, The Genius Sings the Blues is a snapshot of the evolution of timeless American music captured by the pianists indelible rhythmic pace, gospel roots, jazz backgrounds, and Southern-styled accents. And its never sounded so good.

From the iconic cover art (a photo of Charles taken by legendary photographer Lee Friedlander) to the distinguished music within, everything about the thematic record is iconic. Now, nearly 50 years later, it can be heard in pristine fidelity sourced from the original mono master tapes. Mobile Fidelitys engineers have taken great pains to ensure that every clink of the piano keys, ache of Charles rolling voice, and rush of the backing arrangements sounds better than they have since first being recorded in the studio. This 180g LP simply lays waste to the competition.

Previous editions of The Genius Sings the Blues, including a remastered digital edition from Rhino, suffered from varying levels, distracting static and noise, and inconsistent vocal balances. Mobile Fidelity has gone back to the original mono master tapes to correct these problems, giving music lovers what is now unquestionably the best-sounding Charles album to stem from his peak era. And these performances are simply on fire.

Whether inhabiting the sadness in Night Time (Is the Right Time) or personifying the loss of Hard Times, Charles invests each song with supreme emotion and undeniable conviction that makes the lyrics ring true and the blues resonate with cathartic pathos. Uptempo country blues numbers (Im Movin On, Early in the Mornin) balance the mournful slow fare, and again prove Charles a master composer, interpreter, and musician who could make any style his own. The Genius Sings the Blues also speaks to legendary jazz pianist Billy Taylors initial impressions of Charles upon hearing him in a way in which few other Charles recordings do.

Taylor recalled: While playing through some new music for a projected Ruth Brown record date, I was asked to listen to an original song played and sung by a young composer and pianist from Seattle, Washington. I can still remember how surprised I was to hear this kind of music from a Northwesterner. He reminded me of Charles Brown, another pianist-singer who was very popular in the Forties, but he had a very personal sound and there was something different about his rhythmic approach. In his handling of melody he seemed to be using devices similar to those used by Dinah Washington and a small group of popular singers who allowed their gospel singing backgrounds to influence their interpretation of popular songs... I was intrigued by the emotional quality projected by both his piano playing and his unusual voice and was not surprised when Ahmet ErtegÜn said that he wanted to let the young musician record some of his own material. He communicates just like the old blues singers, Ahmet said.

Indeed, that innate blues aesthetic dominates this collection, as does Charles distinctive rhythmic mannerisms. Finally, hear them as theyve always been intended to be experienced.

Limited Edition 180 Gram Audiophile Translucent Blue Vinyl

Comic actors John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd rightfully get credit for exposing many people to the music of Blues and R&B veterans. The soundtrack to their hugely successful musical comedy Blues Brothers was released on June 20, 1980 as the second album by the Blues Brothers Band, which also toured that year to promote the film.

The rollicking remake of the Spencer Davis Group's Gimme Some Lovin' was a Billboard Top 20 hit, featuring an arrangement notable for the horn section that replaces Steve Winwood's rumbling organ work. Ray Charles has a good time with Shake a Tail Feather, and he's helped out by Jake and Elwood Blues (Belushi and Aykroyd, respectively). The cover of Solomon Burke's Everybody Needs Somebody to Love is a lot of fun, thanks to the great overall rhythm and Elwood's lightning-fast stage rap, while James Brown and the Reverend James Cleveland Choir provide a blast of gospel music on Old Landmark. Aretha Franklin's Think is explosive, and Cab Calloway's Minnie the Moocher is slyly irresistible.

Rock Out With Dick Dale And His Del-Tones (Live At Ciro's)

Prior to his emergence as a recording artist, surf guitar king Dick Dale first carved out his legend as a live performer. The artist's incendiary early shows in front of raucous surfer crowds at Balboa Beach's Rendezvous Ballroom established Dale as a regional sensation, and in the process helped to put surf music on the map. After he became an international star, Dale and his longstanding band the Del-Tones maintained the energy and innovation of their early performances, expanding their reputation as a peerless live act.

In 1965, Dale captured the infectious spirit of his live shows with this album, recorded on stage at the fabled Hollywood nightclub Ciro's. This vintage LP offers a bracing snapshot of the trailblazing guitar hero at his string-shredding best, tearing into his classic Let's Go Trippin', and applying his head-spinning instrumental fire to such diverse tunes as Henry Mancini's Peter Gunn, Lee Hazlewood's Angry Generation and Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the Wind. He also unveils his underrated vocal skills on riveting readings of Eddie Cochran's Summertime Blues, Barrett Strong's Money and Ray Charles' What'd I Say.

Out of print on vinyl for decades, the Sundazed edition of Rock Out with Dick Dale and His Del-Tones (Live at Ciro's) has been mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on high-quality 180-gram vinyl, with completely restored original cover art.
