    Ready Take One

Erroll Garner was one of the great American Jazz pianists of the 20th century, yet very few know his name or his music. Ready Take One is the first completely new Garner studio album in nearly 25 years.

As never before, listeners are treated to a rare peek behind the studio doors, with revealing conversation between Garner, his quartet, and longtime manager/producer Martha Glaser included between many of the songs. As pianist/producer Geri Allen writes, a kind of fifth member of the band, Glaser would support Erroll Garner in the moment of the creative act, as evidenced by the title of the album, a direct reference to Glaser's steady refrain of, Ready, take one.

Ready Take One features six never before released original Garner compositions, including the infectious Wild Music and beautiful ballad, Back To You. Recorded during a prolific five-year period beginning in 1967, all 14 songs on Ready Take One are previously unreleased, having only recently been discovered after nearly 50 years.

Motown Records approached American R&B/rock band Rare Earth in the latter part of 1968 to sign a recording contract with the label. At first the group was reluctant because of the fact that other white artists/groups hadn't found success with the label because they were primarily geared for promotion and distribution in the black market only.

It was when Motown decided they wanted to launch a new division of Motown to cater to more white artists and broader radio formats that Rare Earth relented. Motown didn't have a name for their new endeavor initially so the band jokingly suggested their namesake Rare Earth. Surprisingly, they agreed and the Rare Earth subsidiary was born.

Rare Earth had been playing clubs for several years prior to signing with Motown, cutting their teeth on a lot of R&B music which was prevalent on the radio at the time. This is where the band developed their now famous version of the Smokey Robinson/Temptations song Get Ready. It started out as a 3-minute song until one member took a solo and then everyone wanted a solo so over time it evolved into a 21-minute long monster. It became the closing song each night and people liked it so much they would stay just to hear it.

The band even featured the extended take of Get Ready on an entire side of this, their 1969 debut album of the same name for Motown. After initial slow sales, they decided to release the first three minutes of Get Ready as a single. Not only was it a huge hit, peaking at #4, it propelled the album, which also boasts the band's takes on the classics Tobacco Road and Feelin' Alright, into the Top 20!

    Homesick

Two years after their debut release, A Day To Remember exploded from a small band with a dedicated fan-base in Florida into a worldwide phenomenon thanks to the insane live shows and Pop-Hardcore they have lovingly made their own.

Gaining the respect of their peers as much as their fans, they landed slots on the New Found Glory and Silverstein tours, the Victory Records Tour and the Vans Warped Tour. Now, ADTR are taking their insanely catchy melodies and brutal breakdowns with the positive message of friendship and unfaltering self-belief to the masses.

    Highlights

"Mixed Emotions falls right into place, then, indulging both musical and emotional nostalgia without falling victim to any particular trend." - SPIN

"Toto would be proud." - CMJ

Highlights, the band's first collection of new material since their critically-lauded debut, Mixed Emotions, in 2012, began in a basement in Pittsburgh and ended in a church in Brooklyn. It trades world music sounds for a more alive, realized approach, the result of Emm and Cohen knowing they wanted to break from their 'two
    guys, one screen' writing style.

Influenced by their time spent on the road touring Mixed Emotions, primarily in the States, they
reached for the sounds of 90's New York hip-hop drums, Detroit techno synths, and lots and lots
of guitars. The result could almost be called an homage to the sonics of America, if that sort of
phrase wouldn't make the band cringe. Instead, let's just call Highlights "the album where things
started making more sense." Between working in Los Angeles with producer Patrick Ford, and
their hometown of New York City with Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear) in his 100 year-old church studio,
they eventually settled on the ten songs that make up the record.

Highlights is like a renaissance for a band that began in 2008 as a one-off remix project. The upbeat dancefloor-ready tracks are imbued with colors and emotional range that go much deeper than ever before, with Emm's vocals and lyrics, at once personal and observational, taking center stage.

    Who Never Rests

"Who Never Rests" kinda says it all. Khan is an extremely prolific producer, having produced electronic music under at least ten pseudonyms, including Bizz OD, 4E, El Turco Loco, Captain Comatose, Kid, and Khan. "Who Never Rests" drips with sleaze and sophistication. There's a party, and Satan's standing in the corner, soaking in sweat, and drinking champagne with the gothic bunny himself. Khan's a torch singer in a greasepaint clown suit, ready to strap you in and take you to Hell. But don't worry, he'll bring you back in one piece after he's had his way with you, so enjoy the ride.

Fronting some of the most original, compelling and unpredictable bands
(not only in Detroit, but the world) for over two decades, Tim Lampinen's
work with the Epileptix, Clone Defects, and Human Eye has always held
a rapturous cult following. Yet his work with his current trio, Timmy's
Organism, presents Lampinen (aka Timmy Vulgar) along with bassist Jeff
Giant and drummer Blake Hill, ready for their close-up.

    With Heartless
Heathen the group touches on their artistic and spiritual forbears of
Captain Beefheart and Destroy All Monsters, while amply ramping up the
slop culture rapture of classic punk 'n' roll like Chrome, Crime, and the
Damned as well as contemporaries like Thee Oh Sees. There's a reason
why Lampinen won a $25,000 Kresge Grant for his work with his bands...
he creates music that borders on art, live shows that border on theater.
It's high time the rest of the world takes notice. Are you ready?

    Super Session

    Import

Super Session (1968) was conceived by Al Kooper and features the work of guitarists Mike Bloomfield and Stephen Stills. Kooper and Bloomfield had previously worked together on the sessions for the ground-breaking classic Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan. For Super Session, Kooper recruited keyboardist Barry Goldberg and bassist Harvey Brooks, both members of the Electric Flag, along with well-known session drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh.

On the second day of recording, with the tapes ready to roll, Bloomfield did not show up. Kooper hastily called upon Stephen Stills, also in the process of leaving his band Buffalo Springfield. Regrouping behind Stills, Kooper's session men cut mostly vocal tracks, including "It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes A Train to Cry" from Highway 61 and a lengthy and atmospheric take of "Season of the Witch" by Donovan.

The album peaked at #12 on the Billboard 200, and has been certified a Gold record. The success of this record opened the door for the "supergroup" concept of the late 1960s and 1970s - Blind Faith, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and the like.

Ode To The Inverse Of The Dude (Discontinued)

When producer David Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Los Campesinos!) agreed to helm the latest High Strung album, a strange/wonderful meeting was set to take place. In the height of a brutal Canadian winter, the High Strung brought a decidedly different batch of songs with them to the small church-studio of the legendary indie producer. Josh Malerman (songwriter) has written his first group of personal numbers, songs that addressed bizarre psychological states as well as revealing/comforting ideas of a man turning himself inside out, the idea of celebratory self-examination.

Ode to the Inverse of the Dude sounds a lot like what it's about; there's no doubt Newfeld stretched a band who was ready to be stretched and the outcome is a fantastic/blissful proclomation. It's an exploratory album, combining dreamy sounds and lyrics with the magnificence of the rock band that the High Strung is. The album is an honest original, but it's not a puzzle, it's a matter of heart. Songs like ôGuilt is How IÆm Built,ö ôStanding at the Door of Self-Discoveryö and ôOut of Character,ö not only adhere to the theme but feel and sound like a genuine self-evaluation where the subject is equal parts excited and frightened about their discoveries. Derek Berk and Chad Stocker, one of the countryÆs most colorful/dynamic rhythm sections, do not disapoint as they bring to life this coming together of wonderful artists. This record is a musical/pyschological triumph for both a producer who has worked his magic into the hearts of millions and a band who gets better with every album.

    Blue Colored Vinyl

The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.

Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.

And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.

After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.

We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.

Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.

The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?

It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.

And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. And I'll buy you a drink while I'm at it.

    Mountains Beaches Cities

Nashville rock favorites, Moon Taxi, have really hit the ground running in 2013. February saw the release of their second studio album, Cabaret; a keyboard laden, indie-prog rock venture. The band has hit the festival circuit hard over the summer playing the Hangout Music Festival, Wakarusa and Forecastle just to name a few. Now Moon Taxi is ready to release their third studio and second album of 2013, Mountains Beaches Cities.

Mountains Beaches Cities comes as a continuation of Cabaret. The songwriting style and recording process discovered while making their second studio album fuels the songs on Moon Taxi's newest effort. Mixed by Vance Powel of Third Man Records, the album features enormous drum sounds, multiple layers of keyboards and guitars and are driven by steady grooving bass lines.

Moon Taxi has released two singles from the new album to wet audiences appetites. The first release, 'Running Wild', is an indie pop number that uses signature Moon Taxi guitar riffs backed by keyboard synth layers. The lyrics speak of taking in the moment and making the most of life while there's still time.

Their second single, 'The New Black', is a hypnotic, head bobbing tune that plays off of one progression over and over. The dynamics rise and fall with the addition and subtraction of subtle layers that support the southern rock/blues guitar riff that drives the song.

    House Of Woo

Maxmillion Dunbar's House of Woo is raised on a solid foundation of love. Maxmillion dunbar is one half of Beautiful Swimmers and don behind the Future Times record label. Dunbar first tried his fingers at programming hip hop beats and eventually introduced his rogue breed of house music to the dance world via 2010's Cool Water.

House of Woo counters Cool Water's darkness with shimmering, dazzling light. It is a pure blast of bliss inspired by Dunbar and his girlfriend's deeply rooted relationship. Themes of their devotion never appear lyrically, but ebb in the album's emotional flow. House of Woo's architecture is free of fabricated rigidity, but does bare structural resemblance to some of dance music's outer limit moments. Theo Parrish's narrative masterpiece Parallel Dimensions is touchstone on a track like "Coins For The Canopy", while the cerebral techno of Newworldaquarium takes moving, grooving form on "The Figurine" and album namesake "Woo."

In percussive corners throughout House of Woo, Dunbar drums up native DC Go-Go spirits and skitters into Jersey swing on tracks like "ice room Graffiti". Dunbar deviates even further from the blueprint on "For Mozy" and "Shampoo", pieces that haunt House of Woo with their spectral, synthetic wash outs. Whether showing respect and love for his influences or for his peers and those
even nearer and dearer, Dunbar stands in the doorway waiting with a warm invitation to anyone ready to dance, embrace, and inhabit forever the House of Woo.

    Litmus / Glass Love

As part Anthology Recordings' Surf Archive series, we celebrate the soundtracks to Andrew Kidman's classic 1996 film Litmus alongside his 2006 follow up Glass Love. By the early '90s, surfing was on an upswing in popularity as professional surfers became marketable athletes. The three-fin, high performance, "thruster" shortboard was the tool of choice, lending to a fast-paced slashing style and ultimately a more aggressive "surf and destroy" movement in board culture. Litmus, Andrew Kidman's first avant-garde surf film, served as a soulful reaction to the pop-punk progression that dominated the "alternative" mainstream. Prior to filming Litmus, Kidman's band, The Val Dusty Experiment, recorded a total of thirty-five songs in one day. The outcome of the "one-and-done sessions was a lo-fi, rustic, experimental rock 'n' roll sound, adding a rough-around-the-edges ambiance to the surf scenes that span Ireland, Australia, California, and South Africa. Additional contributions from Galaxie 500, Yothu Yindi and The Screaming Orphans diversify the score. Litmus was a defining moment in surf filmmaking -- it sparked an open-minded retro-progressive movement as surfers formed a higher consciousness about the types of boards they were riding and why. Kidman released his second film, Glass Love, ten years later. As with Litmus, the music came first; Kidman felt his songwriting was ready to take on a new life. Thanks in part to Litmus, experimentation in board design progressed as surfers became more contemplative, questioning, 'is surfing art or sport?' Glass Love and its soundtrack highlights this mindset and time period, creating an extra dimension to surfing that is still prevalent today.

Kindly Bent To Free Us (Awaiting Repress)

Legendary progressive rock innovators CYNIC - consisting of guitarist/vocalist Paul Masvidal, drummer Sean Reinert and bassist Sean Malone - will release their new album, Kindly Bent To Free Us, via Season Of Mist.

About the new material, Reinert said: It's a bold new sound for CYNIC and marks a gigantic leap in the band's progression. We've had a lot of time to let this material develop and gestate, and it finally feels ready to be unleashed on the world. I've been in trio mode with Malone and Masvidal flushing out a zillion and one details, and couldn't be happier about what's happening with these songs. They are truly alive!

In a February 2012 interview with Ireland's Molten magazine, Masvidal described the band's new music in the following way: It's almost like, I don't know how to explain it, but if I had to put it in a box it's more sci-fi, futuristic and alien but at the same time very song-driven. It's kind of like, to me, coming into CYNIC's body more. It feels very modern and at the same time it just feels really cool. I'm big in the space. It's definitely new. It's not like anything we've done before. It's a new color, a new space. I think people will really take note of even the guitar stuff. I'm really shifting gears, I'm trying things in a different way and the way stuff is played. It's a new space for CYNIC, for sure. It definitely sounds like us, except completely new.

CYNIC's latest EP, Carbon-Based Anatomy, was released in November 2011 via Season Of Mist. The CD artwork was designed by the great Robert Venosa, the artist behind the covers of CYNIC's previous releases Focus, Traced in Air and Re-Traced.

CYNIC was joined by Brandon Giffin on bass and Max Phelps on guitar and vocals during the group's North American and European tours in support of Carbon-Based Anatomy.
