Only Record to Feature Davis Original Sextet, Including Rhythm Section of Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones

Title Track Stands as First-Ever Modal Composition Even as Blues and Hard-Bop Flavors Make LP One of Davis Most Explosive Affairs

Miles Davis created just one studio album with his original sextet. He made every moment count. Pairing with Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, the trumpeter not only laid the groundwork for the modalism that immediately followed but tailored a genuine modern-jazz masterwork laden with performances among the most explosive of his distinguished career. Due to its sandwiched position between the more famous Round About Midnight and epochal Kind of Blue, Milestones remains, for too many music lovers, an overlooked classic.

    A Garland Of Red (Pre-Order)

Originally released on the Prestige label in 1956, A Garland of Red is the debut album by pianist Red Garland.

In his review for Allmusic, Scott Yanow stated Thirty-three at the time of this, his first recording as a leader, pianist Red Garland already had his distinctive style fully formed and had been with the Miles Davis Quintet for a year... Red Garland recorded frequently during the 1956-62 period and virtually all of his trio recordings are consistently enjoyable, this one being no exception.

    Milestones (Stereo)

Milestones is Miles Davis' only original sextet recording featuring John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Cannonball Adderley, Philly Joe Jones and Red Garland. This 1958 masterpiece captured Davis' rst modal jazz experiments in pieces like "Straight, No Chaser" and the title track. Both the song and the album proved to be actual milestones in Jazz, as the modalism Davis introduced on this record continued to inuence Jazz on a global scale.

200-Gram Pressing by Quality Record Pressings has a Flat Edge Profile and Deep Groove Label, True to the Original LP, and a Deluxe High-Gloss Tip-on Album Jacket.

All-Star Musician Lineup of Red Garland, John Coltrane, Donald Byrd, George Joyner and Arthur Taylor. Originally Released in November 1957.

Some groups have existed only in the recording studio but have produced music of lasting value.

This quintet, under pianist Red Garland's leadership, actually did play some gigs around New York in the fall of 1957, but even if it hadn't, the rapport in the studio would still have been powerful. Beginning with the association of Garland and sax master John Coltrane in the Miles Davis Quintet and continuing with Arthur Taylor's trio connection with Garland, and trumpeter Donald Byrd's having worked with all of them in one form or another, there was enough of a common spirit in the musical attitudes of all the participants. The title blues spans an entire side; the overleaf is shared by Gershwin's They Can't Take That Away from Me and Dameron's Our Delight.

    Groovy

Red Garland and Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist and keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles' group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland's talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige's Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, and New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder's studio. Groovy was the third in Red's trio series for Prestige and it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads and just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding and maintaining a groove.

    Soul Junction

Though it was recorded in 1957 (on the same day as his All Mornin' Long LP), Soul Junction was not released until 1960 on the Prestige label.
Featuring the fine tenor work of his fellow Miles Davis Quintet alum, John Coltrane, and the blazing trumpet of Donald Byrd, Soul Junction is one
of Garland's finest releases as a band leader. The center piece is the 16-minute long title track which features a stunning, mellow and bluesy solo from Red himself.

    Rock And Roll Joe

The idea for Rock and Roll Joe began during Chip Taylor's Scandinavian tour of 2007. As Chip traveled through Norway and Sweden with his longtime friend and guitarist John Platania, new protege fiddler Kendel Carson, drummer Bryan Owings and bass player Ron Eoff, they talked about everything. But many of the conversations revolved around the musicians that they knew and respected and Chip realized that most music fans didn't really know the people who were behind many of the great records of the last 60 years.

With that in mind, Chip wrote the song, Rock and Roll Joe. That song prompted several more, with everyone in the band suggesting more songs in need of the spotlight. At the end of the tour back in London, the band quickly recorded the new songs and the Rock and Roll Joe album was born.

Chip Taylor and Train Wreck Records have also launched a website that will promote and honor the unsung heroes of rock music. The history of rock is filled with people such as Hank Garland and Mickey Baker who were instrumental in shaping the sound of today's best music. Yet their contributions are barely recognized. In addition to the underappreciated musicians and session players, there will also be some room to highlight the songwriters, producers and behind the scenes people who helped shape this music.

Limited Edition of 500 on Audiophile Clear Vinyl

One of the greatest jazz pianists of any era, his innovative block chording has become foundational to modern jazz piano. 'It's a Blue World it's yet another shimmering jewel in a string of tiny masterpieces by magnificent Red Garland Trio. Paul Chambers' bowing is truly special on this very special recording. This set shows the versatility of these musicians, not only Garland, but bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Taylor as well. Listen to Paul Chambers bowing his instrument on the very fast paced "Crazy Rhythm" and "This Can't Be Love". There is certainly nothing lacking in the Art Taylor's drumming on the latter selection.

    About Audiophile Clear Vinyl

Audiophile Clear Vinyl is made using the highest quality co-polymer available and processed without any carbon additive in order to dramatically reduce the "electrical distortion" often found on records. By itself the co-polymer of vinyl is transparent. In order to make the record black in color the plant must use a carbon additive with trace metals that can become magnetized. This is what causes electrical distortion during playback. That is the reason why we choose to offer our records in the following manner:

Traneing In With The Red Garland Trio

The recordings John Coltrane made for Prestige, both with and without Miles Davis, helped establish his first substantial foothold in the jazz world. He showed that he could play the blues; and whether he was treating a ballad at the usual tempo or taking one upstairs, he combined thought and emotion in a completely individual manner. The Garland trio, itself a recording entity for the label, was a strong unit that was sensitive to Trane's musical attitudes.

Workin' With the Miles Davis Quintet

Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the 3rd in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia, producing music of high energy and immediacy. This is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, Ahmad's Blues. Miles is the sole survivor of this quintet but the music made in the mid-50's period will live forever. The excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and Miles' poignancy and intense swing. Recording engineered by Rudy Van Gelder.
