Odulek'Odludek', the debut solo album from Doves' Jimi Goodwin, is released on PIAS/Heavenly Recordings in 2014.
This is the first new music release from Jimi since Doves's Kingdom Of Rust in 2009.
Jimi on Odludek:
"I wanted to make this mad mixtape the kind you'd pass back and forth with your mates; eclectic as fuck. That's the way we've all discovered music over the years isn't it? We join our own dots to make it all make sense. As I got into making the record, it felt like I was proving something to myself, making a point that I could do all this on my own. You know - I can play bass, I can play guitar, I can orchestrate. As the methods changed, the original concept stayed intact. It's me, powering through ideas, kapow kapow, no pause for breath. It's not trying to be wilfully eclectic; it's just a reflection of how I schizophrenically devour music."1. Terracotta Warrior

VenturaIn 2010, Antoine Hilaire and Florent Lyonnet released the first Jamaica album. Produced by Peter Franco, an American engineer known for his work with Daft Punk and Xavier de Rosnay, one half of Justice, 'No Problem' is boosted by a terrific single: 'I Think I Like U 2. Jamaica is taking off. Followed an almost two year tour, more than 150 shows around the world, and success from Paris to Tokyo.
Jamaica felt ambitious when it was time to start working on their second album, without any weight or pressure : "On the contrary! We felt extremely light. We only realised that in a way we had to write our second first album."
They started writing 'Ventura' in Paris, knowing they would start recording in Los Angeles, fed by both fantasies of American culture, gathered from records or movies, and the reality they discovered while touring several months in the U.S. "We often played in the U.S. during our first tour, and America as we know it now is not only spectacular and Hollywood-centered. It's also filled with clubs and cranked up amps."
When they tell about the month they spent with Peter Franco in a rented house in Los Angeles to give life to their new songs, Antoine and Florent mention a discovery in a literal sense: "We thought about for a while naming this album 'Pinta, Nina, Santa Maria', like Christopher Columbus's ships." In the end, they named it 'Ventura'. For the musicians, the name reminds of its literal translation of "luck" and "fate", but also of the 72 Pontiac and of course, of Ventura Boulevard, one of the biggest roads in the San Fernando valley. It's also on Ventura Boulevard that Peter Franco set a house into a studio, where Jamaica locked itself for a month, surrounded by instruments borrowed from local musician friends, sometimes recording vocal takes while friends would walk across the living room to get fresh beverages from the fridge, heading to the pool.
The duo is greeted with prestigious guests. One day, Tunde Adebimpe, TV On The Radio singer, sings soulful and worried vocals on 'Golden Times', another day, Chris Caswell, longtime collaborator of Paul Williams's gives them a hand with a few keyboard arrangements. Their friend DVNO writes and sings the song 'Goodbye Friday' with them in a few simple and entertaining work sessions.
Jamaica comes back to Paris, where Antoine and Florent take back the numerous tracks recorded in the U.S., helped by their producer friend Samy Osta and his 2001 studio. They listen, select, arrange the many layers of music Peter Franco led them to gather, under the influence of his recent work on Daft Punk's 'Random Access Memories'.
Jamaica then settles in the Paris studio Tranquille Le Chat, where the owner Laurent d'HerbÉcourt just finished the recording of Phoenix's 'Bankrupt!'. Antoine and Florent find the perfect place to finish their record: it is bathed in daylight thanks to three large windows, which is seldom found in a studio. "To us, 'No Problem' shows a clubby and nightly aspect of the band, while 'Ventura' is meant to be the daylight album for Jamaica."
The band came in to record a few tracks, but never left the place or Laurent d'HerbÉcourt. They kept pushing in the direction they fancied in Los Angeles, helped by the huge Neve mixing desk that stands in the middle of the studio. The intent was to create a new depth to the band's sound, mixing electronic habits and an almost magical approach to analogue gear: "Depending on the moment of the day, the sound of analogue gear changes, machines heat up, like living things. It was very exciting for us, Jamaica being usually digitally driven."
Antoine and Florent's belief in a more organic sound was strengthened by Laurent d'HerbÉcourt: "While mixing, he definitely pushed us further towards a "radio" oriented direction, in the most noble and Fleetwood Mac sense of the word. A sunny pop that hides more sensibility when one really pays attention."
Songs like 'Two on Two', 'Golden Times', 'All Inclusive' or 'Ferris Wheeler' are fueled by this feel good music to listen to while driving along the Pacific Ocean. Other tracks reveal new leads for Jamaica, from 'Turbo' and 'Same Smile's' post surf music to 'Rushmore's' power balladry.

Fear In BlissBella Union is excited to release Fear In Bliss, the debut album from
recent signings HORSE THIEF. This youthful band is a purveyor of a
panoramic yet nuanced sound, flowing from intimate to anthemic,
the mood from vibrant to contemplative, with front-man Cameron
Neal's lyrics ranging from confessional to metaphorical. The result
evokes the wide-open spaces of America's Midwest but infuses the
sense of grit and wonderment with edgier emotions.
Horse Thief, originally founded in Denton, TX, moved to Oklahoma
City to attend the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University
of Central Oklahoma, from which they recently graduated. The band
subsequently signed with the Flaming Lips' management and soon
came to the attention of Bella Union. Though Fear In Bliss was
conceived at Horse Thief's Oklahoma headquarters the band
decided to record the album in LA, "to leave our comfort zone of
Oklahoma", and producer Thom Monahan (Devendra Banhart,
Vetiver) has helped the band fuse their renowned stage performance
with studio quality.
The over-arching theme to Fear In Bliss is "finding yourself and what
you believe in, and finding the comfort in acknowledging fear. I've
struggled with anxiety and depression which comes out a lot on the
new album. But when everything gets rough, I think there's always a
way to fix it. The biggest thing for me is to give comfort to people,
to shed light on the truth that someone is feeling the same way as

Too Much InformationMaximo Park are pleased to announce their return early next year with their fifth album, 'Too Much Information". Recorded and self-produced by the band in Newcastle and Sunderland with additional production duties from The Invisible's Dave Okumu and from Field Music's David and Peter Brewis, the album is the follow up to 2012's critically acclaimed 'The National Health', and sees the band reach new heights in their remarkable songwriting and sonic experimentation.
From the beautiful weirdness of Brain Cells, to the poetic Leave This Island and Midnight On The Hill, and the refined rock of Give, Get ,Take, 'Too Much Information' sees the band keen to challenge the listener with some of their most adventurous musical and lyrical work to date.1. SongsAfter the groundswell of adoration for his album debut Life After Defo and the live shows that followed, Deptford Goth returns this Autumn with Songs, his second record of intensely slow-burning gems. Where the former was more affiliated with those seamless blenders of dreamy synth-pop, R&B and soul, Songs adds elements of singer-songwriter tradition to his irresistibly yearning electronica. "It wasn't a conscious decision," says Daniel Woolhouse. "But I've become more accepting of my voice, so it's more prominent now, which led to structuring the songs in a more classic way. I also wanted people to hear the lyrics. It's a process of being more upfront and honest."
Songs' mood is still downbeat but tracks such 'Two Hearts' as 'The Lovers' would suggest he's found more happiness in his life. "Life After Defo had bits of hope hidden inside but this one's definitely more joyous," Daniel agrees. "Instead of closing down I'm opening up and feeling more at peace with myself about certain things."
Songs also bears the mark of its origins. Last year, Daniel left his south-east London flat where he recorded and Life After Defo for a place by the sea. "It's pretty peaceful here," he says. "And more space meant I could develop things a bit more."
As if to underline his singular mission, Songs' artwork echoes that of Life After Defo, being by the same artist, Jordan Kasey. "I wanted a continuation. I wanted something figurative, but that resembled a landscape too. It represents to me a connection between the physical self and it's surroundings, which is one of the album's themes." Over 11 chapters, from dark to light and various points in between, Songs is a unique landscape of the mind, body and soul, and one of 2014's most beautiful.1. Relics

VamalaWith only a Radio 2 session to precede it, the debut album from brothers Michael and David Champion appeared like a bolt out of the blue. And for believers in the environmental influence on music, it makes sense the Champions hail from the hamlet of Niton outside the Victorian seaside enclave of Ventnor on the Isle Of Wight, as Down Like Gold sounded beautifully out of time and place, even with artists they could call peers. Combining elder brother Michael's exquisitely melodic, intensely dreamy and persuasively heartbreaking songs with their folk-pop leanings, his affecting vocal timbre, David's empathic lead guitar and reinforcing harmonies that only siblings seem able to make, the album was a unique statement - much like the word Vamala, which fell out of Michael's mouth as he was singing along to a new tune. It had a nice ring, like a Croatian girl's name, he thought.
The follow-up album VAMALA (blame Michael's OCD for the capitals: I like letters the same height!) follows only a year on after their debut. The record-buying attention span is shorter these days, he reasons. There's so much new music out there, so we wanted to get an album out quickly. But only as we had the songs.1. Desire

REDD-PIAS-1916xThe Very Best
Makes A KingTHE VERY BEST return this Spring with their their most ambitious and richly textured album to date, Makes A King, released 10th April on Moshi Moshi Records.
It's been a long, strange trip for Johan Hugo and Esau Mwamwaya, the Swedish-Malawian duo behind The Very Best's exuberant global pop. One which crosses continents as well as musical genres. It's also a trip, according to Johan, with no end in sight. "We're constantly evolving," he says with a laugh. "Not just in the sense that we're trying to change our sound. But we're constantly on a new journey which colours the music we make."
This particular journey began in October 2013, following a performance at Malawi's Lake of Stars festival when Johan stayed on in the capital, Lilongwe, to record some demos. Initial sessions were promising, but to really move ahead Johan felt they needed a change of scene. "When we were ready to get into writing and production we wanted to get away from Lilongwe and city life," he says. "We found a house about five hours drive from the capital in a village called M'dala Chikowa. It was an amazing experience recording there, especially because the community is half Christian, half Muslim. In a world often divided between the West and the 'other' it was amazing to see people living in peace and harmony despite differences in religion and culture."1. Nkhondo

Thin WallsThe world is growing ever smaller. There are less places to hide and less space to think. Nothing is private. It's a notion that Belgian quintet Balthazar felt keenly as they traversed the world touring their 2012 album Rats. It was an intense period where they clocked up the sort of hard road mileage that can make or break a band but Balthazar's two songwriters, Maarten Devoldere and Jinte Deprez, emerged emboldened. As Jinte explains, we know each other's darkest secrets now. We grew together. You live together as each other's brother and sister. We discovered we really like each other.
Lives lived in each other's pockets has left its mark on Thin Walls, the stunning new album from the five-piece who are completed by Patricia Vanneste, Simon Casier and Michiel Balcaen. Thin Walls is all about touring and never having any privacy, says Jinte. The songs were written in a hazy hyperactive state between shows. Balthazar's previous two albums, 2010's Applause and the calculated, searing alt-rock of 2012's Rats, were created in a slow, considered manner back home. This time round, the band had to fit in writing sessions whenever they had a spare day off. When you're on tour, the mood is very restless and chaotic, says Maarten. Life on tour is kind of weird, everything is prepared for you and you drink way too much. If you write with a hangover, then you write differently...1. Decency

Gargoyle (Awaiting Repress)Early in 2016, Mark was at home in LA, working on some ideas for what might turn into his next album when he got an email from a friend, an English musician named Rob Marshall, thanking Mark for contributing to a new project he was putting together, Humanist. The pair first met in 2008, when Marshall's former band Exit Calm supported Soulsavers, who Mark was singing with at the time. Now Rob was offering to write Mark some music to return the favour: "I was like, Hey man, I'm getting ready to make a record if you've got anything?'" Mark recalls. "Three days later he sent me *10 things !"
In the meantime, Mark had written 'Blue Blue Sea', a rippling mood piece that he thought might be a more fruitful direction for his new record. "It's almost always how my records start," he explains. "I let the first couple of songs tell me what the next couple should sound like, and it's really the same process when I'm writing words. Whatever my first couple of lines are, tell me what the next couple should be. I've always built things like that, sort of like making a sculpture I guess."
Within an hour, Mark had written words and vocal lines for two of the pieces Rob had cooked up at Mount Sion Studios in Kent and pinged through the virtual clouds to California. Rob's music fitted perfectly with the direction Mark had been pondering: in essence, a more expansive progression from the moody Krautrock-influenced electronica textures of his two previous albums, 'Blues Funeral' and 'Phantom Radio'. Eventually, Rob Marshall would co-write six of the songs on the new Mark Lanegan Band album. "I was very thankful to become reacquainted with him," Mark deadpans.
The remainder of the album was written, recorded and produced by Lanegan's longtime musical amanuensis Alain Johannes at his 11 AD base in West Hollywood. Everything was done and dusted within a month, unusually fast by Lanegan's recent standards. "I definitely feel like I'm a better songwriting than I was 15 years ago," he says. "I don't know if I'm just kidding myself or what, but it's definitely easier now to make something that is satisfying to me. Maybe I'm just easier on myself these days, but it's definitely not as painful a process, and therefore I feel I'm better at it now. But part of the way that I stay interested in making music is by collaborating with other people. When I see things through somebody else's perspective it's more exciting than if I'm left to my own devices."
While sharing roots with its two predecessors, on Gargoyle there's a significant up-shift in the swaggering power load of such keynote songs as Nocturne and Beehive, while the lyrics' tonal palette is more varied. The album title comes from a lyric in Blue Blue Sea - "Gargoyle perched on gothic spire" - and was chosen for its hint of self-deprecation. "I'm most proud of the songs that are atypical to stuff that I've done in the past," says Mark. "So I really like Old Swan, because it's an expression of positivity, which is completely anti-anything I've done before!" He laughs. "Y'know, I haven't played this record for too many people yet. I played it for Greg Dulli, who played on some of it, and he was like, 'Wow, I had to listen to it twice - it sounds like he's having a good time '
It's been a long journey traveled, not always easy, but in 2017, at the age of 52, Lanegan's got the look of permanence about him. Like that gargoyle on the gothic spire .1. Deaths Head Tattoo

The record follows up 2007's 'Thirst For Romance' and 2010's 'Beneath This Burning Shoreline', which have since seen Simon Aldred become a songwriter-for-hire, nurturing upcoming British talent including Sam Smith and Kwabs, as well as release a set of critically lauded post-midnight electronic love songs under the guise of Out Cold.
Recorded in Sheffield with long-term Richard Hawley collaborator Colin Elliot and mixed in Bath with Dan Austin, Herd Runners is ten perfectly crafted tales of heartbreak and hope - shifting from soaring, symphonic pop ('Clear Skies Ever Closer') to melancholic lock-in blues ('Drinking for Two') via an almost uncompromisingly hopeful rhythmic shuffle ('The World Could Turn').1. JuntoJUNTO-due out via Atlantic Jaxx/PIAS America--marks pioneering U.K. electronic music duo BASEMENT JAXX's seventh studio album.
Globally revered as innovators and leading lights of their genre, BASEMENT JAXX blew the lid off the dance music scene of the late 90's with their ground breaking albums Remedy, Rooty and Kish Kash. Having firmly established their place in the pantheon of dance music greats, the duo of Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe are back with JUNTO, a genre-hopping musical roller-coaster that showcases the band's legendary inventiveness, irresistible songwriting and production smarts.
In May, the pair debuted the club-ready, jacking Unicorn, the first track to be taken from Junto. It has met with universal praise, working as a perfect taster of what the full length has to offer. They soon followed with Mermaid Of Salinas, a samba sensation just in time for the World Cub festivities. Then came Never Say Never, the first official single from the album, currently sitting at #4 on Billboard's Club Play chart and racing up Billboard's Dance Radio chart.
Spanish for 'together,' the concept behind JUNTO is one of unity and soulfulness, fusing dance music's sub-genres into one cohesive multi-flavored confection. It's a bold, boisterous, brilliant album full of amazing guest vocal performances, richly layered production and the irresistible sense of groove that has set them apart from the very beginning. CompanyAndy Burrows releases his stunning debut solo album, Company, co-produced by Burrows with Tim Baxter.
A supremely talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Andy Burrows first came to attention with Razorlight, joining as drummer in 2004 and going on to co-write some of the band's biggest hits, including the #1 single, America. Leaving Razorlight in 2009, Burrows joined We Are Scientists as a part-time member, before releasing the album Sun Comes Up Again under the moniker I Am Arrows in 2010. Sun Comes Up Again garnered righteous critical acclaim and massive radio airplay for its Green Grass single, and saw Burrows and his band tour extensively, with headline shows and festival dates, as well as stadium shows as guests of Muse.
What followed for Burrows was an incredibly prolific purple patch. First he joined up with long-time friend and Editors frontman Tom Smith as Smith & Burrows for 2011's Funny Looking Angels, an album of wintry vignettes and Christmas melancholy. Then, he agreed to decamp to New York to become a full-time Scientist. Amid all this, he has been hard at work on his own material, using a more straight-ahead approach than on his debut, all of it injected with Burrows' way with an earworming hook.
The result is an album that is Andy Burrows' truest yet. If the radiant Sun Comes Up Again was imbued with a deliberate contrary streak, then here he embraces a straight-ahead approach, building an album steeped in rock classicism and raw, melancholic melodies. Company is the sound of an artist who has thrown off the shackles and emerged as a bewilderingly creative tour-de-force.1. Company

CellsFour years and four EPs on, Keating is still something of an enigma. He doesn't prey on fame, he does very few interviews and he isn't part of a DJ crew: he has always preferred to let his music speak for itself. He's been in no hurry to release a record either - until now, that is. Keating has found a home on Different Recordings, which counts club crusaders like Tiga, Felix Da Housecat and Vitalic among its roster, and is finally ready to present his mission statement: Cells.
An album is such a personal manifesto, he says, of why he has waited until now to release Cells, and, in some ways, I didn't feel as if I'd earned that. I hadn't got their full attention yet. He should, however, give himself more credit. Since Mars, Keating has released another chart-nudging single, I Think I Like It, remixed with everyone from Hot Chip and Gossip to Calvin Harris and Sway, produced three memorable mixes for Radio 1 and appeared on huge party bills with the biggest names in dance music. He has also started a label, Blood Music, and has hosted its showcases at Social Club in Paris and London's Fabric. And he has just dropped a new EP, Yes/No, to ready fans for his debut long-player. The world, as it happens, is bloodthirstily waiting: Cells is one of the most anticipated dance albums of 2012.
It's a daring one at that. Cells is an 11-track distillation of Keating's surreal vision, an electronic masterpiece skewered by his love of the macabre, the uncanny and the sinister. He has trapped his signature breed of savage, Godzilla-strength basslines and laser-blazing four-to-the-floor inside his very own suspense thriller.1. Yes / No

Some Say I So I Say Light
Some Say I So Say Light is the second full length release of Ghostpoet's, following 2010's Mercury Prize-nominated Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam. Industrial beats, sonorous piano lines and hyper-detailed ornamentation provide a backdrop for Obaro Ejimiwe, AKA Ghostpoet, an artist who sounds ever more like a man old before his time, whether intoning words so laconically it's virtually spoken word or croaking out sung melodies. Some Say I So I Say Light is a studio-based work co-produced with the talented Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Darkstar, Egyptian Hip-Hop).
Even with a Mercury Prize nomination under his belt, London rapper Ghostpoet could walk through a crowd of music fans without notice and his albums don't land as much as emerge out of the mist. Maybe it's because his delivery is like Roots Manuva on sizzurp or that the lead single here is MSI musmiD, which comes off as a Dali dream sequence directed by Man Ray, but deciphering Some Say I So I Say Light is certainly a joy for returning fans.
Maybe the album's title references a desire to communicate something brighter or more up, as the lyrics are more audible here than previously, or in the case of Them Waters, it's the music that's luminous, as balloons of synthesizer sound pass before the sun as they rise toward the sky. Plastic Bag Brain is the ultimate example and towering highlight with its combo of indie guitar riffing, Radiohead keyboards, and crackable code (his brain wanders like a plastic bag blowin' in the wind), and here's hoping that Dorsal Morsel is Sir Mix-A-Lot's Baby Got Back for the Wittgenstein set, because a mention of women's jeans, popping like a Pringle pack, and revel in the elegance all seem to point toward it. At 12 tracks long, the album is right-sized and flows beautifully with guests Tony Allen, Woodpecker Wooliams, Gwilym Gold, and This Heat's Charles Hayward adding some new sounds for the rapper to flow over. With Richard Formby and the MC himself on production, Ghostpoet remains the most aptly named rapper in the game with his excellent sophomore effort.

Aventine (Awaiting Repress)'Aventine' is the second studio album from Agnes Obel. It is the follow up to her critically acclaimed debut album 'Philharmonics' (2010), which has sold 450,000 copies across Europe, achieving Platinum status in France and Belgium, five times Platinum in her native Denmark, where Agnes picked up five Danish Music Awards (the Danish Brits) in 2011.
Originally from Copenhagen, Agnes has lived in Berlin since 2006, where 'Aventine' was recorded at her Chalk Wood Studios between January and May this year. Like 'Philharmonics', the new album was written, arranged, and produced by Agnes, who provides piano and vocals. Anne M_ller, who has also played with Nils Frahm, adds cello, with Mika Posen of Timber Timbre playing the violin and viola on 'The Curse', 'Pass Them By' and 'Fivefold'. Robert Kondorossi of Budzillus plays guitar on 'Pass Them By'.
While touring 'Philharmonics' I kept on getting all these ideas for recording, and I wanted to explore the cello and other string instruments says Agnes of 'Aventine'. I recorded everything quite closely, miking everything closely in a small room, with voices here, the piano here - everything is close to you. So it's sparse, but by varying the dynamic range of the songs I could create almost soundscapes. I was able to make something feel big with just these few instruments.1. Chord Left
