    Shattered

Shattered will be Reigning Sound's first album for Merge and the first full LP
by the group since 2009's Love and Curses.

The band's principal songwriter/member is Greg Cartwright, who's been
leading the shifting cast of characters since 2001. You may be familiar with
some of the band's work, as this album is preceded by five studio efforts as
well as numerous EPs and live records. Or perhaps some of Greg's other
projects have been on your musical radar: The Oblivians, Parting Gifts,
Compulsive Gamblers, 68 Comeback, Deadly Snakes, Detroit Cobras.
Regardless, as far as Reigning Sound is concerned, this is as good a place
to start as any because through many line-up changes and mood swings,
the central, constant feature is the way Greg writes songs. This particular
embodiment of the band includes longtime keyboardist Dave Amels, who
joined the band seven years ago when Reigning Sound recorded an album,
consisting mostly of Cartwright's songs, with former Shangri-Las lead singer
    Mary Weiss.

Dave proved to be key in putting together the current line-up as well. About
three years ago, Greg was asked to make a promotional EP for Scion.
Recordings were set to take place in Nashville where he had lined up two
local friends to round out the band, but as fate would have it, both had to
bow out at the last minute. Luckily, Mike Catanese, Benny Trokan, and Mikey
Post-Dave Amels' bandmates in Brooklyn soul group The Jay Vons-were
up for the task. The four flew to Nashville, learned the songs, and recorded
them with Greg in a couple of days. Thus was born the group that you
hear on Shattered. They've been touring and playing together ever since, and
Shattered proves that the musical union is both exciting and consistent for fans
    of Cartwright's songwriting.

The album was recorded at Daptone's Brooklyn studio (where drummer
Mikey works in the office) and masterfully engineered by Wayne Douglas.
The recordings are warm and punchy, a mixed bag of rockers, ballads, and
something in between. There are only 11 songs on the album, but the band
    reckons it's just right.

Depending on whom you ask, Jack 'Oblivian' Yarber is either a rock legend or an obsolute unknown. And no one knows this dichotomy better than Yarber, who may be Memphis' most infuential active rock musician.

The list of noteworthy bands Yarber has been a member of over the years is massive and includes Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves, new-wavers the End, '68 Comeback, Knaughty Knights, and Tav Falco's Panther Burns. Two of Yarber's former bands, the Compulsive Gamblers and the Oblivians, have seen their reputation and following swell in the decade since their demise, especially the Oblivians, whose international fan base borders on rabid. Due largely to his stint in these bands, both partnerships with Greg Cartwrigth, now of Reigning Sound, Yarber has been an acknowledged influence on artists such as the White Stripes, the Hives, and Jay Reatard.

In the years since, Yarber has toured and released a string of successful solo albums under the Jack O & the Tennessee Tearjerkers moniker. Originally conceived in 2000 as a partnership with former Impala and current Bo-Keys bassist Scott Bomar, the band quickly morphed into Yarber's solo incarnation after Bomar became occupied with film scoring and production work. The band has had a revolving door for side players ever since, at different times including current River City Tanlines John Bonds and Terrence Bishop, Neighborhood Texture Jam guitarist John Wittmore, the Reigning Sound's Greg Roberson, Bluff City Backslider Adam Woodard, and a host of other recognizable local musicians.

AmpsandSound Products Are Handmade In Small Batches and Go Through Extensive Quality Control

The Casablanca's are aptly named for their classic good looks and commanding performance. They came about in response to repeated requests for a single-ended amp with the power to drive non-compliant or inefficient speakers. Given that large power SE amps are either run in pentode or using exotic power tubes, Ampsandsound opted for a push-pull based amp; a larger version of the Stereo 15.

The Casablanca's provide 60 watts with KT88/6550 power tubes, and 45 watts with EL-34s. Based on the Eico circuit and using a 12AX7/6SN7 front end allows access to a vast array of NOS/NIB tubes. The Casablanca's come with 8ohm and 4ohm taps and can be ordered with 16ohm taps if desired. To provide reliable power and a sweet sound, they turned to their design partners and carefully evaluated 2 new takes based on similar designs; the Eico HF97 and the Dynaco MKIII. They built both and did a shootout with the reigning king of push-pull amps, the McIntosh MC275.

The results were startling. The Eico based circuit was a clear improvement over their take on the MKIII, and was on par with the MC275. The Casablanca's provided extremely articulate bass, with truly remarkable mid and high frequency extension. The bottom line - this amp provides the warmth and detail that is expected from reference level push-pull amps, and nearly limitless personalization with different tube combinations. The tubes included with purchase are new Tungsol 12AX7, Tungsol 6SN7, and Tungsol 6550s.

They were recently asked what differentiates Ampsandsound Casablancas from any of the other well-made gear in the $2000-$3000 range. The answer is that there may be few differences, but the differences that do exist are pivotal to their approach to the reproduction of music. First off, many tube amplifiers in the Casablanca's price range have lower power. Other similar-price amplifiers are stereo amps, not providing the performance and channel separation for which mono-blocks are known.

They chose the Casablanca design to allow for the largest practical power supply. Also, mono-blocks require 40% more parts, and like all Ampsandsound components, the Casablancas utilize modern materials to bring a higher level of performance. This includes using 1-2% resistors instead of the less costly and more common 10% variety, and coupling capacitors with 5% tolerance instead of 20%. Point-to-point wiring would allow for streamlined building, but their PCB's provide superior grounding and noise isolation, with the result that they have realized and improved upon the sonic characteristics of the great amplifiers of the 50's and 60's.

    Sweet Time

Formed in 2005 by guitarists and singers Brian Vanderwerf and Jesse Tomlinson, from Twin City contenders the Midnight Evils, as a rollicking but conventional two guitars/bass/and drums lineup, Chooglin' made their offical debut in November of 2005, opening up for Reigning Sound and the Detroit Cobras. The full Chooglin' line-up now consists of Vanderwerf and Tomlinson on guitar and vocals, bassist Paul Diorio, drummer Shawn Walker, trombonists Harold Longley, Steve Erickson and Zach Zins, and trumpet player Bob DeBoer.

Discovered by Big Legal Mess while playing a show with Fat Possum artists Hezekiah Early and Elmo Williams during the Deep Blues Festival, Chooglin' recorded Sweet Time at Minneapolis' legendary Creation Studios, home of everything from the Trashmen's Surfin Bird and Davd Dudley's Six Days on the Road to the Replacements' Tim and several Husker Du records. With a bleating horn section and ferocious guitar playing, the band is a boogie-rock juggernaut that has the guts and the skills to deliver greasy, proto-Stax soul with as much power and conviction as their relentless, riff-driven rockers.

    Toy

Includes Lead Singer Sabrina Ellis'Handwritten Lyrics + A Photo Of The Band

Toy, the fourth LP from A Giant Dog and their second for Merge, shows the Austin quintet at the height of their powers. A solid year of road-dogging and wood shedding has made the band tighter than ever, the charging dynamo of Andrew Cashen and Andy Bauer's guitars in lockstep with the primal chug of the rhythm section of Graham Low on bass and Daniel Blanchard on drums,in the latter's recorded debut. Lead singer Sabrina Ellis turns in another masterful performance, in equal parts brash, defiant, vulnerable, and raw.

Lyrically, Sabrina and Andrew have a gift for making their personal frustrations and fuck-ups, fears, lusts, and addictions feel universal. While they have always given voice to the weirdos and creeps-showing that their peccadilloes and peculiarities are much more deep-seated and widespread-they dig even deeper on Toy. I feel I've revealed more in this album than ever before, Sabrina confesses. Still, the band doesn't sacrifice an ounce of catchiness or charm when tackling issues like aging, agency, and mortality. For proof, just look at Photograph (not the Nickelback song), the sweetest love song about physical longing and enduring devotion to one's lover, even as their body succumbs to the ravages of time. Influences from Thin Lizzy to Tinariwen reveal themselves on the horn-heavy Toy Gun, within the string laden core of Fake Plastic Trees (not the Radiohead song), and during the explosive conclusion to Angst in My Pants (yes, the Sparks song). The hunger is real on Toy; it's not hard to believe Sabrina and Andrew when they proclaim, I'm not a lover / I am a fight on Bendover.

A Giant Dog recorded Toy with Grammy-winning engineer Stuart Sikes(Loretta Lynn, Cat Power, The White Stripes, Reigning Sound), and singer/songwriter/guitarist/wildman Cashen produced it. Andrew as producer makes a lot of sense, Sabrina says. He composes the songs and knows better than anyone what they should sound like in the end. With him at the helm, we've arrived at a raw, truthful, risky, and rangy album.

The upcoming record from the reigning prince of Afrobeat - and follow-up to 2011's From Africa With Fury: Rise - was co-produced by Grammy winner Robert Glasper and features appearances from M-1 of dead prez, Blitz the Ambassador and Nneka. And so Fela's youngest child has full-steamed ahead with his own inimitable brand of Afrobeat: a sound as compelling as it was when Fela Anikulapo Kuti first fused jazz, funk and soul with highlife and other African rhythms - but with topical lyrics and contemporary influences giving it a modern twist and making it his tightest, most electrifying album yet.

Grammy Award winner and reigning Country Music Association Entertainer of the Year Keith Urban has completed the follow-up to his nearly four times platinum third album Be Here. Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing (Capitol Records Nashville) contains thirteen brand new tracks and is one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

The album showcases Urban's consummate songwriting and vocal talents, as well as his searing guitar work. Co-produced by Dann Huff and Urban, Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing, includes ''Once In A Lifetime,'' (John Shanks, Keith Urban) the album's first single, which upon its release last month became the highest debuting single since the inception of the Billboard Chart. Highlights of Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing include the bold, contagious rockers ''Faster Car'' (Urban) and ''I Told You So'' (Urban). Songs such as ''Shine'' and ''Used to the Pain'' exhibit Urban's ability to produce infectious melodies that patiently build to a musical climax.

While brilliant songs such as ''Stupid Boy,'' ''I Can't Stop Lovin' You'' and ''God Made Woman,'' an anthemic tribute to women, all show Urban's ability to select and interpret songs written by others. Said Urban of Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing; It's just an accurate reflection of where I'm at now. I think it's the sound of being happy and extremely excited with the music that we're making.''

    Cost of Living

    Includes Poster

The United States' myriad inequalities, hatreds and phobias are painfully evident in 2017, offering proof that the age-old dichotomy of political bands versus apolitical bands simply doesn't exist. Either you are comfortable and unfazed by the current reigning power structures, or you use your music as a vehicle for the dismantling of oppression and the creation of something better. No matter what your songs are about, you are choosing a side.

The position of Providence, RI's Downtown Boys has been clear since they started storming through basements and DIY spaces with their radically-minded rock music: they are here to topple the white-cis-het hegemony and draft a new history. Downtown Boys began by combining revolutionary ideals with boundless energy and contagious, inclusive fun, and their resolve has only strengthened as their sound and audience have grown.

Cost of Living is their third full-length, following a self-released 2012 debut and 2015's Full Communism on Don Giovanni Records. They recorded it with Guy Picciotto (Fugazi; producer of Blonde Redhead, The Gossip), one of indie-rock's most mythological figures, in the producer's chair. Picciotto fostered the band's improvisational urges while pulling the root of their music to the forefront: unflinching choruses, fearlessly confrontational vocals, and the sense that each song will incite the room into action, sending bodies into motion that were previously thought to have atrophied.

Downtown Boys are keenly aware of the increased visibility and credibility that comes with signing to a corporate-media conglomerate such as Sub Pop. They're using this platform as a megaphone for their protest music, amplifying and centering Chicana, queer, and Latino voices in the far-too-whitewashed world of rock. In just one example, album-opener A Wall rides the feel-good power that drove so many tunes by The Clash and Wire as it calls out the idea that a wall could ever succeed in snuffing the humanity and spirit of those it's designed to crush.

Compared to previous efforts, Downtown Boys have shifted from a once-meaty brass section to the subtler melodic accompaniment of keyboards and a saxophone, coloring their anthems with warm, bright tones while singer/lyricist Victoria Ruiz spits out her frustrations and passions. Some might say it shows a sense of maturity, as Downtown Boys have undoubtedly smoothed down some of their earlier edges, but there is no compromise to their righteous assault and captivating presence. Like the socially conscious groups of years past, from Public Enemy to Rage Against the Machine, Downtown Boys harness powerful sloganeering, repetitive grooves, and earworm hooks to create one of the most necessary musical statements of the day. We should all do well to take notice!

    Undisputed Attitude (Awaiting Repress)

Undisputed Attitude is a cover album featuring a collection of punk covers of bands including Minor Threat, T.S.O.L., D.R.I. and The Stooges.

Listening to this album is like peering behind the veil of what made Reign In Blood so iconic a decade earlier. That album took the ferocious anger and purity of intention that was hardcore and embalmed it in evil, taking an already speedy genre and amping it up to eleven. Hearing Slayer blaze through such classics as Minor Threat's 'Filler' and 'I Don't Wanna Hear It' is literally breathtaking, in that they retain the essence of Minor Threat's self-righteous anger while still retaining their own signature thrash aggression. Slayer can only sound like Slayer in the end, even when performing a near-Xerox caliber cover.

Pete Townshend's demos had grown legendary among Who collectors well before the official release of the double-album Scoop in 1983. On each demo,Townshend worked out full arrangements, which the Who would often follow exactly. He also recorded a wealth of songs and instrumental pieces that never made it to record.

Over the course of two albums, Scoop features 25 of these demos, including both classic Who songs (So Sad About Us, Bargain,Behind Blue Eyes, Magic Bus, Love Reign O'er Me) and unreleased gems(Politician, Melancholia, To Barney Kessell, Mary). Occasionally, the songs sound better in their demo versions, particularly on latter-day Who songs, which were over-wrought in their official incarnations.

But what makes Scoop so fascinating is its revelation of the depth and detail of Townshend's imagination, and how he refined his ideas. But even casual fans will find the sheer musicality of the record worthwhile it's one of the most focused and impressive albums he has ever released.

    The Age Of The Adz

The Age of Adz (pronounced Odds) is Sufjan Stevens' first full-length collection of original songs since 2005's conceptual pop opus Illinois. This new album is probably his most unusual, first, for its lack of conceptual underpinnings, and second, for its extensive use of electronics. The album almost entirely eschews the songwriter's former tools of the trade: namely, acoustic instruments that accompany an expansive narrative scope.

While the sounds on this record are distinctly artificial (drums machines and analog synths reign supreme), the proclamations of the songs are unabashedly visceral, sung loudly, with a backdrop of insistent orchestration. The result is an album that is perhaps more vibrant, primary and explicit than anything Sufjan has done before, incorporating themes that are neither historical nor civic, but rather personal and primal.

    Aqualung (Steven Wilson Mix)

Gatefold LP featuring 24 page adapted booklet from the previous 2011 40th anniversary set.

After veering sharply from the blues inluences of their debut, This Was, Jethro Tull's sound quickly coalesced around jazz-tinged English folk influences and the antics of frontman/flautist Ian Anderson. But it was guitarist Martin Barre's swaggering riff off the title track of the band's fourth album that would become Tull's trademark--and the band's entrÉe into a long reign as arena-rock perennials. But there's a lot more to Aqualung than the riffage of that cut and its cousins, Cross-Eyed Mary and Locomotive Breath. In an era when pseudo-Christian spirituality was a de rigueur, if cheap, musical commodity (from the overblown operatics of Jesus Christ Superstar to one-hit pop wonders such as Spirit in the Sky and Put Your Hand in the Hand), Anderson and company openly challenged the value of organized religion with a thematic album savvy enough to layer its thought-provoking lyrics between heavy strata of FM-friendly guitar bedrock. A clichÉ, perhaps; a landmark, no doubt. And a record many maintain is still Tull's finest hour. --Jerry McCulley

For more information on Little Girl Blue and the life and times of Nina Simone, see Princess Noire: The Tumultuous Reign of Nina Simone by Nadine Cohodas, The University of North Carolina Press, 2010.

Little Girl Blue was Nina Simone's debut release. Bethlehem founder Gus Wildi, taken with the uniquely beautiful quality of her voice, gave her complete control over song selection, backing musicians, arrangements and production of the recording. Nina and her rhythm section recorded the entire album plus three additional tracks in just one session. In her biography of Nina, Nadine Cohodas recounts engineer Irv Greeenbaum's recollection of that day: Nothing like Nina's artistry had ever happened before ... Her voice and the keyboard playing were so rich and interesting that they could have stood alone.

Little Girl Blue documents Nina Simone's unparalleled and idiosyncratic musical persona at a particularly vibrant, formative stage, and helped launch her on a trajectory with more than its share of personal and professional trials and triumphs.

    Our Year

If Austin's happily egalitarian music scene suddenly switched to a monarchy, Bruce Robison
and Kelly Willis might have to learn to perform while balancing hefty crowns. The two
already reign as one of Americana music's coolest couples, and their latest release, Our Year,
elevates them closer to the lofty territory once occupied by beloved royals Johnny 'n' June
    and George 'n' Tammy.

Working again in Nashville with producer Brad Jones (Cheater's Game), they delivered their
musical thoughts in 10 outstanding tracks, from formidable originals to well-honed covers
including a knockout version of the Tom T. Hall-penned "Harper Valley PTA." Jeannie C. Riley's 1968 hit sounds like a classic all over again in the hands of this pair - and the
chicken-pickin', mandolin-plucking, shaker-grooving players who back them on this tart tale.

The desire to capture that live dynamic - their "swampier, grittier side" - drove the
creation of Our Year, Willis says. Robison calls their style "a modern take on classic country
    music, without being retro."

The album was self-recorded and self-produced in their home studio in Tyler, TX - the band's first time recording completely independently, which proved to be a rejuvinating and rewarding process.

The new album sees Eisley's signature tapestry of rich harmonies, delicately woven over the band's most intricate instrumentations yet. The relaxed, creative setting also allowed for the band's most collaborative effort to date, seeing more prominent bass and guitar lines than ever before, a song written and sung by lead guitarist Chauntelle DuPree-D'Agostino (her first ever full-song solo lead vocal performance), and guest performances from Merriment and Say Anything's Max Bemis.

"Currents is honestly the first time we've had total and complete free reign over the making of one of our records and it felt so liberating. We were able to dig deeper musically; There are lusher arrangements and more abstract themes. I feel like we really were able to experiment this time in the studio while still enjoying doing what we love which is essentially writing pop songs," explains vocalist/guitarist Sherri DuPree-Bemis.

"I think our fans have always appreciated that Eisley doesn't sound exactly like every other band and I think we've succeeded in taking that element a bit further on this record. We're more confident as a band than we have ever been. I think the people that have always loved the darker, whimsical side of our sound will be very pleased with the songs on this record while the people who have enjoyed what's melodic, simple and sweet about Eisley will be quite pleased as well. The title Currents, to me, is relevant to how we feel as a band at this point in our career. The current is constantly moving and flowing no matter what and that's what we've always done together and plan to keep doing."

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound

...these are all truly classic Verve titles that you simply don't want to miss...most importantly, the sound of these reissues is nothing short of astounding. Particularly the early Billie and Ella mono records are incredible treasures of sonic beauty. I'd definitely ask Santa for the whole set, or, if you want to cherry pick, the most classic titles. Whatever you decide, you owe yourself at least a half dozen! Winner of a 2012 Positive Feedback Online Writers' Choice Award - Danny Kaey, Positive Feedback Online, November/December 2011

This album came about through a fortuitous convergence of circumstances. Shelly Manne & His Men were appearing at New York's Village Vanguard, sharing the bill with the Bill Evans Trio. Getting Riverside's permission to let the pianist participate, Creed Taylor set up a session at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with Evans and Manne sharing top billing. Manne's bass player, Monty Budwig, made up the trio. This was a busman's holiday for Evans, who was freed from the musical parameters he had set for his then-current trio. The result is that his playing seemed lighter, freer, and more relaxed than it had for a while. The album kicks off with a jaunty version of Irving Berlin's The Washington Twist from the unsuccessful Mr. President with Budwig sharing the honors with Evans as much as Manne. Manne spends most of his time driving Evans into more diminished and sharper playing than was usually Evans' wont. Another relatively unfamiliar Berlin work, Let's Go Back to the Waltz, gives full reign to Evans' lyricism. The longest tune on the set is an audacious, almost lampooned version of With a Song in My Heart with light chordal phrasing that pretty much characterized much of the tone coming from this session.

Released in early 1967, the group's third longplayer Deliver is one of the Mamas and the Papas' essential works, and an exquisitely engaging expression of the group's singular pop artistry. The album produced a pair of Top Five singles in the amusingly autobiographical "Creeque Alley" and the quartet's transcendent reading of "Dedicated to the One I Love," previously recorded by the "5" Royales and the Shirelles. Other highlights include the much-loved originals "Look Through My Window" and "Boys & Girls Together," and reworkings of the Smokey Robinson-penned Temptations classic "My Girl" and the Beatles/Isley Brothers hit "Twist and Shout."

    Quicksilver Anthology (Awaiting Repress)

Mastered by Joe Reagoso from the Original Capitol Records Tapes w/ Ron McMaster

Along with fellow superstars Jefferson Airplane, Steve Miller Band and The Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service were one of the first Bay Area rock acts that helped usher in the progressive rock/acid rock movement during the height of the Summer Of Love in San Francisco. With its core line-up of David Freiberg, Dino Valenti, Greg Elmore, Gary Duncan, Nicky Hopkins and John Cipollina, this amazing band truly delivered many fine recordings during their successful reign at Capitol Records.

Anthems of the era still resonate today with society issues and world problems as Quicksilver foretold with their classic signature tunes like Fresh Air, What About Me, Hope and Pride Of Man. With the superstar talents that made up this band over the years, it was not uncommon to hear radio stations play entire sides of their revolutionary albums during the dawn of FM and underground radio.

Capitol Records awarded Quicksilver and their huge fan base with a very extensive and amazing Greatest Hits package called Anthology back in 1973. Right from the start you get a healthy three track serving from their first monster release Quicksilver Messenger Service, along with more solid tunes from other fine albums like Happy Trails, Shady Grove, Just For Love, What About Me and others classics.

Out of print for many years, Friday Music has announced the first time 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl release of their classic Capitol Records release Quicksilvers Anthology on Friday Music. This amazing album features 16 of their most important songs from their legendary albums from 1967 through 1973. From the early acid rock sounds of Dinos Song and the 12 minute epic The Fool, to later day hits like the aforementioned Fresh Air, What About Me and Just For Love, this album truly shows the relevance and importance of this sorely missed iconic band.

Mastered impeccably from the original Capitol Records tapes by Joe Reagoso and Ron McMaster, this super limited edition album also boasts the original gatefold cover album art, including the silver on black embossed Quicksilver logo. The two HQ vinyl LPs are also protected by poly lined sleeves, as well as a poly bag to help keep the album cover and albums in great condition.
