MultiviralCalle 13 have come a long way since their 2005 debut, when they were a smartass pair of twentysomethings from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, riding the international reggaeton boom with a club-minded mix of sex talk and political invective. With their fifth record, frontman Residente and his halfbrother Visitante have made as ambitious a hip-hop album - if that's not too narrow a term - as any in any language. Beginning with an incantatory intro delivered by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano, the album ramps up through Respira El Momento, where Residente breathlessly escalates his Eminem-ish flow over dark piano, orchestral swells and choral drama. El Aguante pays tribute to human endurance, calling out a laundry list of dubious leaders (among them Hitler, Idi Amin, Stalin/Bush, Truman, Ariel Sharon) over a pennywhistle stomp owing to both Gogol Bordello and the Pogues. And on the title track, driven forward by Middle Eastern vocals and guest Tom Morello's strafing guitar, controversial WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange - who recorded his spoken-word part in the basement of the Ecuadorian embassy in London - salutes the power of people armed with the truth. The song, like the entire LP, is an object lesson in just that.

Supersonic Home, the anticipated debut LP from Pittsburgh's resident musical wunderkinds
Adventures, is an ambitious blend of powerhouse influences: these ten songs reimagine of the
best parts of 90's alt-rock and emo and infuse them with the cathartic energy of punk. However,
Adventures delivers much more than just the sum of these parts. Throughout upbeat anthems like
opener "Dream Blue Haze" and pensive, melancholic retreats like "Tension and "Long Hair," the
constant vocal tandem of Reba Meyers and Kimi Hanauer radiates above every infectious poprock
riffs and the warm, rhythmic backbone of bass and keyboard. No matter what draws you

BaptizmIt's grim, but strangely beautiful, a formula Rabit seems
to have nailed. - Resident Advisor
Featured in a 'Artists who will define 2014' list compiled
by The Fader.
Over the past 2 years Rabit has developed a formidable reputation within the underground via a steady stream of acclaimed 12 releases and mixtapes. On an emotional level Baptizm is about having one's life thrown completely out of order and finding solace in an imagined world. Themes of destruction and regeneration dominate throughout as well as an ongoing obsession on the often-ugly clash between sexuality and religion. All in all 'Baptizm' finds Rabit continuing to feel out the parameters of his increasingly alien sonic world in a typically exciting fashion.1. Imp

Lesser UnknownBaltimore and Wham City resident Adventure's 2008 self-titled debut was an energetic journey through the outer expanses of an SID chip, an experience that took listeners whizzing over pixelated mountains and explored the darker corners of the most modernized urban setting.
This limited tonal range and lack of human vocals (save for a few dialogue samples from Bladerunner) may have made the music of Adventure seem a bit cold or impersonal, but on his newest release, Lesser Known, Benny Boeldt has brightened up his sound, adding soaring synth blasts and maximalist flourishes a la M83.
The airy snare and pulsing bass that open the album act as fanfare, like Boeldt welcoming the listener into the spacious new environment of Lesser Known. His aesthetic remains grounded in the 1980s, but the songs sound more like retro-futuristic radio hits than the arcade conjuring modulations of his first release. On tracks like Fool's Paradise and Smoke and Mirrors, Boeldt splits the difference between New Order and Nu Shooz, creating a sound that could please even the most cynical bedroom moper while gratifying any party-goer who's simply looking to dance.
Those fearing a record of wistful '80s pop facsimiles will be pleased to hear tunes like Relax the Mind and Lights Out connecting the dots that link Giorgio Moroder and his modern hit-making scion Dr. Luke. Dance beats permeate the bulk of Lesser Known, but the two closing songs introduce pensive atmospheres, perhaps laying the framework for Boeldt's future musical ventures.1. Open Door

Listen To My Song: The Music City SessionsBorn and bred in Berkeley, California, Darondo (given name William Daron Pulliam) first played professionally at the age of 18 in The Witnesses, a blue-eyed soul troupe resident at East Bay teen club the Lucky 13 in the 60s, but it wasnt until the early 70s that the singer-guitarist hit his stride.
When Darondo signed with Ray Dobards Music City label in August of 1973, he brought along a superb stash of self-penned tunes, arranged by musical mentor John Al Tanner, and all cut in two marathon all-night sessions. Even with overdubbed strings, horns and keyboards, the results were righteously funky; Memphis-tinged, for sure, but equal in its conveyance of the urgent street vibe of the East Bay.
The album offers the complete sessions while the special vinyl edition approximates the album that Darondo should have issued in 1974, but Ray Dobards notorious parsimony and hubris meant singer and label parted company far too quickly, leaving only the Music City 45 of Didnt I as evidence of their brief association.
In interviews Darondo often references the lost Music City album. And with good reason: he was at the top of his game, focused, creative, and moving exceptionally fast to use a cherished phrase, cuttin up! Thus, Listen To My Song: The Music City Sessions provides some closure as well as indisputable evidence, should you need it, that Darondo is one of the greats.1. I Don't Understand It

Life Is Full Of PossibilitiesVinyl comes with digital download card - remixs from the CD version included on download card too! Los Angeles resident Jimmy Tamborello records, releases and occasionally performs music under the name Dntel. In 2007, we at Sub Pop released the Dntel album Dumb Luck which included contributions from a whole raft of talented people too numerous to list here (a short version of that list would include members of Grizzly Bear, Rilo Kiley, Bright Eyes, and Arthur & Yu). And at the end of 2010, we released a pair of companion EPs by Dntel, entitled After Parties 1 and After Parties 2. Together these two EPs total eight tracks, all of them instrumental, and featuring (to the best of our knowledge) a list of guest contributors numbering exactly zero.
Back in 2001, we did not release the Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. This album was originally released by the Plug Research label, and because we've always secretly wished we'd put it out back then, we're going to release an expanded, re-mastered version of the album to mark its ten-year anniversary.1. BlunderbussThe White Stripes frontman's debut solo LP features the lead single, Love Interruption, with White accompanied by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Ruby Amanfu. White previously described Blunderbuss as an album [he] couldn't have released until now.
I've put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name, he said. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas.
Born the youngest of ten children, raised in Southwest Detroit and a resident of Nashville since 2005, White is one of the most prolific and renowned artists of the past 15 years. When the White Stripes started in 1997 no one, least of all Jack, ever expected that a red-and-white two-piece band would take hold in the mainstream world. With the release of 2001's White Blood Cells the band was thrust on magazine covers and captivating audiences through worldwide touring. "Fell in Love With a Girl" served as the band's breakthrough hit and its accompanying Michel Gondry Lego clip was chosen by Pitchfork Media as the No. 1 music video of the 2000's. The release of Elephant in 2003 not only cemented the band's reputation as a force to be reckoned with, but it also offered the hit "Seven Nation Army" which has since become appropriated as a de facto stadium chant for many sports teams the world over.1. PsychicDARKSIDE is the collaborative duo of guitarist/
composer Dave Harrington and electronic
producer Nicolas Jaar. DARKSIDE summon
a hybrid of electronic music, psychedelic
rock, and dancefloor techno with the sort of
artistic depth and breadth for which the term
"progressive" was coined. DARKSIDE's first fulllength album-released on Nico's own Other
People label in conjunction with Matador
Records-is called Psychic.
DARKSIDE's Psychic is a watershed moment
for the duo, a quantum leap forward from
their 3-song debut, 2011's DARKSIDE EP. At
any given moment, Psychic encompasses the
ritualistic structures and methodologies of
krautrock, the cosmic exploration of classic
space-rock, and the immersive, body-moving
transcendence of 21st century house and
techno-but, working with the finishingeach-others'-sentences fluidity of kindred
spirits, Dave and Nico synthesize it all into a
living, breathing whole.
DARKSIDE are deep listeners and creators
of both who see little need for distinction
between their favorite sounds. The result
is Psychic, an album of uncompromising
creative vision from two artists working at the
peak of their powers.

'Preparations' is the first record to be released on Tri Angle by Fis. Based in Wellington, New Zealand, Fis has steadily been building a name for himself on the underground as a producer to keep an eye on. Having already put out a number of very limited edition and very well received releases through a handful of drum and bass oriented labels, 'Preparations' finds Fis at a point in his music making career where he's ready to be introduced to a wider audience and confirm why websites like Resident Advisor have had things like this to say about him in the past; 'A producer that has suddenly appeared, rather fully-formed, doing something completely individual, sounding like absolutely no one else.' It's pretty difficult to explain exactly what Fis sounds like. Drawing upon a rich history of New Zealand customs and periods of heavy meditation for inspiration, Fis's tracks have the ability to completely disorientate and absorb the listener, creating rhythms that constantly seem to be cannibalizing one another. 'Preparations' feels forward thinking in the extreme and yet entirely elemental and strangely ancient.1. Magister Nunns

Tour A TourApollonia, the French trio of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky, are set to release their debut artist album 'Tour à Tour' in October. "'Tour à Tour' (meaning to take turns, or 'alternate') represents the idea of a continuous motion of music between us; a neverending circle that flows and becomes hypnotic Our album represents the way we approach our DJ performance - there is a unity between us and we work like one artist; the music we play holds no boundaries of time, respecting music old and new." - Apollonia Vibe brothers in the studio, DJ booth and life, Apollonia have cultivated a creative synergy that sees them connect and work as one artist. The three originally met in the Parisian after-party scene of the late 90s, where Ghenacia was a resident at the infamous underground after-hour, Batofar. After over ten years of music and friendship, in 2012 the three decided the natural progression was to collaborate and form the DJ outfit and label, Apollonia. What they describe as a meeting of "black music and white soul", they have showcased their electric back2back2back sessions in the best clubs and festivals the world over. Created in a six-month studio lock down in Berlin in early 2014, and mixed down by Philippe Zdar (Cassius) and Alexkid, 'Tour à Tour' opens with the sounds of Apollonia's roots in house music.1. ADAD-TEM-4913xPaul de Jong
IFPaul de Jong is best known as the cofounder, cellist and resident found sound savant of the beloved, defunct collage-pop duo, the Books. Five years after that band delivered their final album, The Way Out, to much acclaim, de Jong delivers his first solo album, IF.
IF sets the Books' early albums (particularly The Lemon of Pink) as a starting point, and elevates that beguiling sense of wonder and amazement to genuinely transcendent new heights. De Jong's ability to find the musical in the mundane has always been uncanny - it is part of what made the Books so magical - and that
gift is what makes IF such a marvelous curiosity, and such a true pleasure to hear. In de Jong's world, everything around him is a potential instrument: his
mind-bogglingly vast collection of forgotten private press regional folk records, spoken-word oddities of indeterminate origin unearthed in discarded thrift store piles, and various everyday household utensils that we tend to take for granted. One man's trash is de Jong's
tool to craft yet another treasure.
Featuring a handful of friends and family as musical guests, IF steers a course from joyously eccentric folk-pop to humorously inside-out jazz, resulting in a refreshing piece of outsider art with a replay value that's
off the charts.1. Auction Block

They Only Come Out At NightMastered from the Original Epic Records Tapes by Joe Reagoso and Kevin Gray
Edgar Winter, the multi-talented superstar brother of blues rock legend Johnny Winter, has been a fixture on the rock music scene now for several decades. While launching his own successful career with his solo albums and Edgar Winters White Trash, the natural progression for this man was to develop his own supergroup which would become the platinum and gold selling The Edgar Winter Group.
Releasing their first album in 1973, They Only Come Out At Night was an overnight success, thanks to the mind altering studio jam Frankenstein which has since become one of classic rocks finest moments. This instrumental smash featured the stunning keyboard of Edgar Winter, the incredible guitar of resident shredder Ronnie Montrose, the thumping bass of the late great Dan Hartman and of course the solid percussive hits of Chuck Ruff.
The album went onto receive more attention from radio programmers across the globe as even further hit songs would rapidly develop including the blues rocker Undercover Man, the country rock feel of Round & Round and of course another top charter with the summer Top 40 Rock driving sounds of Dan Hartmans Free Ride. The Rick Derringer produced album would go on to stay on the charts for a long time and receive multiple platinum status in a very short time. Truly, one of classic rocks finest albums ever recorded!
Now for the first time ever on audiophile vinyl, Friday Music announces the first installment of their Edgar Winter 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl Series with his platinum plus album They Only Come Out At Night. This first time audiophile vinyl release is mastered from the original Epic Records tapes by Joe Reagoso (Johnny Winter/Alice Cooper/Boston) at Friday Music Studios with Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI.
For this special release, the limited edition album comes in the original gatefold album cover, which features the photography of Francesco Scavullo and Norman Seeff and artwork design of John Berg. Another LifeJames Maddock affirms his status as a fixture in downtown Manhattan's folk and Americana scene with his album 'Another Life.' As NPR says of the British transplant, "his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy."
Nodding to '70s rock with shimmering acoustic guitars, an understated rhythm section and flourishes of fiddle, mandolin, piano and dobro, 'Another Life' bridges the mainstream appeal of songwriters like Jesse Harris and Norah Jones and the quirkier sensibility of Loudon Wainwright. With funding entirely from fan contributions through PledgeMusic, Maddock worked with producer Matt Pierson, multi-instrumentalist Larry Campbell (who's played with Bob Dylan and Levon Helm) and bassist Tony Scherr (who plays with Norah Jones).
The 13 songs on 'Another Life' paint a portrait of a man reaching the midpoint of his life, a natural progression from themes in Maddock's earlier releases. He's looking back on roads not taken, and isn't always sure he chose the right one. On the title track, Maddock wants an extra 50 years to try "acting, white-water rafting," "some illegal substances," even having a kid or three. "I've Been There Too," built around an indelible guitar riff, shows Maddock's knack for instrumental hooks as well as lyrical ones. "Don't Go Lonely," in a well-timed moment of levity, hints at reggae with dub bass, bubbling organ and the chorus's entreaty to "go get high, go get found, go crazy on this town / don't go lonely."
After fronting the Columbia Records band Wood, whose debut 'Songs From Stamford Hill' was featured prominently on TV shows such as "Dawson's Creek," Maddock moved from England to New York City in 2003. His 2009 album 'Sunrise On Avenue C' won a New York Music Award for Best Americana Album, while follow-up 'Wake Up And Dream' ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's (NYC) Listener Poll. He's performed with Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows), sang on an album with Susan McKeown, and is a resident artist at Rockwood Music Hall. According to radio legend Vin Scelsa, Maddock's heartbreakingly beautiful and exquisitely crafted music touches the soul.1. Another Life

Pattern of ExcelWhat moves faster than the internet? OK, maybe light. But besides that, it's hard to find something more fleeting, rapidly changing and dynamic as the voice of the online community, which ultimately shapes the contemporary creative landscape both on and off the screen. As it happens, sometimes the artists who are most celebrated by the collective interweb are the same ones who later are in the throes of its fickleness. In the case of Lee Bannon, he's managed to slip into the elite of so many disparate (yet all discerning) scenes that even the speediest of hype surfers can't seem to keep up with his sonic shapeshifting. After an initial rise in the world of hip-hop (self-releasing beat tapes, collaborating with rap royalty like Souls of Mischief and Hieroglyphics and producing and DJing for Joey Bada$$ and the Pro Era crew), Lee Bannon turned his attention to a more ambitious, unconventional and decidedly anti-fad cause: taking influence from Goldie, Aphex Twin and the legacy of drum & bass and jungle to craft his debut LP Alternate/Endings. The album, released in January 2014 on Ninja Tune, was percussively dense, somehow both raw and razor-sharp, and featured enough peaks and plummets to blow the snapback right off the expectant hip-hop head's skull. Despite (or perhaps because of) the bold shift from previous work, the album was released to critical acclaim with words of praise coming from Rolling Stone, Resident Advisor, FACT, Pitchfork, The Guardian and more. Never one to stagnate, Lee Bannon has spent the subsequent months further honing his skills as a hotly-tipped collaborator (working more with Joey Bada$$, Wiki and producing Mick Jenkins' newest single, as well as more credits to come later this year), touring extensively (including a run with Trash Talk and Ratking in North America) and turning his attention once more to the studio for solo work. His sophomore LP on Ninja Tune, Pattern of Excel, again signals a movement away from the ground he's already covered and toward his own vision of the leftfield future. Gone are the rapidfire breaks and growling b-lines of his debut, replaced instead by a considered exploration of ambient soundscapes and drone influences. Though less immediately demanding of the listener's attention, Pattern of Excel shines in its quietude: the bokeh which filters through Artificial Stasis, the distant but steady build of Memory 6, the strings sadly quavering into a melody on Disneµ Girls. Rather than a departure, Pattern of Excel can only be considered a continuation of Lee Bannon's proven flexibility and commitment to innovation and progression.1. Good / Swimmer

Ripe Dreams, Pipe DreamsCameron Avery has arrived as a new breed of nocturnal crooner, a train-wreck romantic creating timeless, ambitious music for the modern age. Utilizing his soulful wit, shrewd arrangements, and a deep, husky baritone, Avery harnesses the dark power and humor of artists like Nick Cave, Scott Walker, and Tindersticks to expertly walk the fine line between vulnerable and venerable.
Hailing from the late 2000s-era Perth, Australia, a healthy scene of hard-hitting garage rock bands, including a long stint as the drummer of Pond, Avery found his musical footing while playing with friends but sought the reward of his own outfit. Encouraged by his friend Kevin Parker of Tame Impala to record on his own, Avery started The Growl as his solo project in 2007, making an EP and an album of aggressive, distorted psychedelic rock and roll. When Parker asked him to join Tame Impala as its touring bassist in 2013, Avery jumped at the chance and rose with that band to the top of the psych-rock heap, but all the while remained focused on carving out his singular identity as an artist and following his own muse.
On a break from touring, Avery decided to head to the US to work on his album. He would settle in Los Angeles at the behest of Jonathan Wilson, the Echo Park musician and producer who also encouraged Avery to shine a spotlight on his baritone singing voice, unlike the snarling, obscured vocals of The Growl. It was a lofty idea, but one to which Avery aspired, encouraged by the challenge.
Melancholic machismo is written into the very DNA of Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams. From the classical, finger-picked guitar on the opener "A Time and Place" and the orchestral vamping of "Do You Know Me By Heart?" to the bombastic, self-assured swagger of "Dance with Me." He takes an emotive page from the Leonard Cohen songbook-of-longing on "Big Town Girl" just as naturally as he thumbs an aggressive note of Bad Seed strut and Cramps rut on "Watch Me Take It Away." And by the time he purrs that earnest refrain of "Baby, it's you" on the album's closer "C'est Toi," Avery has surely mastered that drunken tightrope dance. Now a resident of New York City, Avery looks to continue his search for the ultimate sensations from a fresh vantage point.1. A Time and Place

As Rhymesayers was transitioning from a local Twin Cities crew, who were known for
explosive and engaging live shows at coffee shops, raves, and venues around town, into
a full-fledged independent label, some of the most integral players in the crew decided to
form a supergroup, and thus began the legend of The Dynospectrum.
The group's formula was largely centered on the four MCs, Slug of Atmosphere, I Self
Devine of The Micranots, Beyond (better known as Musab), and Mr. Gene Poole of Phull
Surkle. Each of them had already made a notable impression on the Twin Cities scene,
so the idea of them coming together was easy to view as a force to be reckoned with.
However, an essential element of The Dynospectrum was its production, as Ant (of
Atmosphere) was digging deep into his explorations of painting sound with dark and
moody strokes. Yet another signature aspect to this album was its iconic artwork,
provided courtesy of the Headshots resident artist, Aaron "Abuse" Horkey, who has also
provided some new work for this special vinyl edition. Horkey's uniquely exquisite graffiti
stylings give the album a comic book-like essence while maintaining an air of elegance
and fine art. Lastly, in order to take all this creative energy and shape it into something
real, label CEO, Siddiq Sayers, acted as the sound engineer at the time for the newly
formed Rhymesayers studios, and took the lead on distribution and management for the
All of this resulted in The Dynospectrum being a landmark release in the Rhymesayers
catalog, regarded to this day as a cult classic, which makes it long overdue that we finally
get to see this full release available on vinyl for the very first time. This upcoming special
vinyl edition, just like our recent Overcast! 20th Anniversary vinyl release, has been
completely re-mixed from the original reel-to-reel tapes and remastered, complete with
bonus unreleased material from those same recording sessions. All the original music
and lyrics have been left completely intact, only enhancing the listening experience, so
that this breakthrough album sounds better than ever!LP 1

Range Of LightS. Carey's chosen musical expression is a hugely beatific, restorative panorama of beauty - perfect given how
landscape and the wonder of nature inspire much of Carey's imagery. His new album Range of Light - the
follow-up to his 2010 debut All We Grow-takes its title from the name that 19th century naturalist John Muir
- Carey's hero - gave to California's Sierra Nevada, and follows suit with a dazzling array of musical light and
shade, drawn from Carey's love of jazz, modern classical and Americana. Like a weathered mountain range
changing shadow form and color, or the ebb and flow of a river's current, his music is simultaneously restful
and rhythmic, complex and simple, and always evolving.
"My music has specific connections to nature and place, my surroundings, and my experiences," says Carey. I
travelled the Sierra Nevada area many times as a boy, fishing small mountain streams, hiking to the top of'half
dome', exploring the Redwood groves at Wawona, in awe of the Yosemite Valley. The term,'Range of Light',to
me, denotes the spectrum of light and dark a person can have in their life - peaks and valleys of happiness,
sorrow, challenges and growth - for me most recently and more specifically: marriage, having a baby, and
maintaining a spiritual connection to nature, place, friends and family as an adult."
While he studied classical percussion and piano at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Carey imbibed
rhythmic minimalists such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Immediately after graduating in 2007, he caught
wind that Eau Claire resident Justin Vernon was forming a band to take his For Emma, Forever Ago opus on
the road. Carey learnt the drum and vocal parts for the album, rehearsed with Vernon, and has been a mainstay
of the Bon Iver live band ever since.
While on tour with Bon Iver, Carey developed his own song writing ambitions, and after many less than
frequent recording sessions between tours, released All We Grow in 2010. Those nine songs sat between a
folk/modern classical hybrid and rarefied jazz climes. Carey's warm melodic nuances, reflected in the lush
folds of his singing, added to the mutable percussive syncopations of his instrumentation.
Range of Light incorporates elements of his previous work, but also amplifies Carey's percussive proclivities,
and is altogether more developed than its predecessors, with more input on the performance and even
composition side from the band of musicians and best friends he assembled originally to bring All We Grow
to life in the live setting. "Therewere times during recording sessions when there were three percussionists, all
with different styles and fortes, playing at once, adding different textures."
From the flurry of violins over a circular rhythm in 'Crown The Pines' and the beautiful cries of 'Alpenglow',
to the pensive depths of songs like 'Fire-scene' and 'The Dome', Range of Light is a still life of an artist in this
particular stage of his life; a stage that has been met with the highest of peaks and the lowest of depths all
within the range each of us treads through.1. Glass/Film

Hip-hop instrumentals and electronic sketches;

Gorgeously haunted - Pitchfork
We seek the new because of the numbness. If you listen to enough
music, you're familiar with the feeling. Sounds get recycled so often
that they can seem like geometric configurations organized via Wav
files. Trends get time-stamped faster than a triplicate trap hi-hat.
The most rare records emerge outside of any clearly delineated orbit.
They're solitary visions that supply their own rhythm and arsenal.
Music that reverberates through heart, brain, and spine. This is Nosaj
Thing's third album, Fated.
"I just tried to escape really, and escape even what's going on in the
music world," says Nosaj Thing, the LA producer born Jason Chung. "It
just felt so suffocating in a way. I just wanted to do my own thing."
It's been six years since Nosaj Thing emerged among the vanguard of
Low End Theory-affiliated producers. His debut Drift created 31st
century tones and chromatic textures so sleek that they inspired
innumerable Soundcloud imitators.
None could match its moody iridescence, faded sadness and funky
swing. Bach collided with Boards of Canada. Spaceships came
equipped with rear view mirrors and a booming system bumping
G-Funk and warped soul. Pitchfork called it "gorgeously haunted."
Resident Advisor said it "exists in its own dimension and feeds off its
own exhaust: full of alien choirs, conquered computers, and refracting
Fated exists in this same alternate dimension, but further out. If
comparisons previously existed with other artists within the LA beat
scene, Nosaj has rendered them baseless. His second album on
Innovative Leisure (after 2013's Home) seeks celestial escape through
"The last record took out so much of me. I just wanted to go back to
simplifying and overthinking so much. It was a battle," Nosaj says.
"The soul of a song, the essence of a song-whatever you want to call
it-should be simple."
By stripping away all but what's really necessary, the sounds harness
an unusual directness. Guest appearances are rare, save for vocals
from Whoarei on "Don't Mind Me," and Chicago rap phenomenon,
Chance the Rapper. The latter gravely spits on "Cold Stares," invoking
terminal fevers, empty beds, devil's whispers, and insomniac fears.
If comparisons crop up, Fated has most in common with records like
Burial's Untrue or Dilla's Donuts. Requiems that canvass the shadowy
hinterlands between life and death, darkness and light, loneliness and
love. Eternal themes re-imagined in ingenious fashion.
"The album name came from all these coincidences that just kept on
happening to me," Nosaj says. "Specific interaction with specific
people in unexpected places. A perpetual feeling of dÉjà vu."
It's foundation rests on that intangible thing that some call fate or
primordial feeling. Numbness receding, old emotions flooding back,
un-tampered visions. Fated is what you can't explain, so it's best to
just listen.1. Sci
