Music From The Films Of R. Swift

INST sounds like Brian Eno and Wendy Carlos had a love child in the 70s and subsequently marooned him/her/it on an Oort Cloud. This largely instrumental electronic project may seem out of character for Richard Swift, with his unmistakable beautiful singing voice, melancholic lyrics, and sophisticated songwriting. With this release, he has resurrected the earliest forms of electronic music, thrown in a few dashes of dub, hip-hop, kraut-rock, and Motown, and created a new hybrid dish. For fans of Re/Search curiosities and other weird, ambient, and electronic headphone arts directed just outside the third eye.

    Swift

Marco Benevento is used to doing things for himself. Since launching his solo career six years ago, Benevento has co-founded the label that releases his music, The Royal Potato Family, and built the studio, Fred Short Sound, where he works whenever he's not on the road. He's written, arranged and played his largely instrumental anthems, leading a band from behind his customized piano and a tiny armada of drum-machines and sequencers, keyboards and pedals. But until Benevento set out to complete his fifth solo album, he'd never sung his own songs, a strange omission for music that's so often been lyrical. That changes-decisively, assuredly, triumphantly-on Swift, the boldest and most bracing album of Benevento's career.

Abetted by producer Richard Swift (Shins, Damien Jurado, Foxygen) and featuring Benevento's core touring band: Dave Drewitz on bass (Ween) and Andy Borger on drums (Tom Waits, Norah Jones), an ease and energy radiate throughout Swift, its nine tracks every bit as delightful and kinetic as the title suggests. Opener "At the Show" is a handclap invocation, the big-bottomed drums and fleet keyboard line motioning toward the dance floor. "Eye to Eye" moves with an indomitable swagger, while closer "Free Us All" prompts eyes-closed, mouths-open bliss. Even "No One is to Blame," the album's ostensible down-tempo drift, can't suppress the excitement of the new setting, the new singer or the new approach. Its climax offers arching catharsis, Benevento's multi-tracked harmonies curving like a rainbow. On "If I Get to See You At All," Dreiwitz's bass dances atop the track, his rich fuzz-tone affording the melody the feeling of a sinister carousel. And on "The Saint," he and Borger emerge as powerhouse, the viscous bass line rumbling over drums that slow and spring, stutter and stomp. A minute into the track, Benevento has to wait for just the perfect moment in which to slide his silvery piano.

An album of crisp, strange pop songs, sliced through with a wholly original approach to piano, electronics and songwriting, Swift is the singular artistic statement Benevento was destined to create at this point in his continually evolving body of work.

Four Tracks From 2012's GENERALS Remixed By Dntel (Jimmy Tamborello of The Postal Service), Richard Swift, Clark Baechle Of The Faint, And Field Days

Blue Vinyl 12", Limited To 1000 Copies!

Following 2010's critically acclaimed debut What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood and a year on the road touring as part of Bright Eyes, singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn teamed up with producer Richard Swift (The Shins, Richard Swift) again and emerged with GENERALS, a sophomore album fully armed. In place of the Zen meditations found
on The Mynabirds' first album, GENERALS is filled with armies of stomps and claps, sweeping full spectrum orchestrations, and moments that range from intensely personal pleas to shout-out-loud protests with teeth.

GENERALS picked up  high praise from The Huffington Post, USA Today, Pitchfork, BuzzFeed, Paste, and many others. Songs from the album were featured on Rock Center, Gossip Girl, and Grey's Anatomy, while NPR Music counted "Generals" among their Top Songs of 2012.

    Other People's Songs Vol. 1

Over the weekend of August 21-22, 2010, not long after Damien Jurado and Richard Swift first collaborated to produce Damien's 2010 record, Saint Bartlett, the pair hunkered down with a 4-track recorder and one Coles 4038 ribbon microphone to record a collection of cover songs that run the gamut from John Denver to Chubby Checker to Kraftwerk.

The timing was perfect. On Other People's Songs Vol 1, we can see the scaffolding of what would become a creative turning point for the pair - later seen with the release of Damien Jurado's Maraqopa, the first record in his Maraqopa trilogy - less than 2 years later. The opening drum hits of Be Not So Fearful, the falsetto vocals of Sweetness, and the Spaghetti-Western swing of Radioactivity are, by now, hallmarks of the Jurado/Swift sound, but Other People's Songs Vol 1 is a transitional fossil, a marking of the pair's collaborative evolution.

What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood

Following the demise of Georgie James, Laura Burhenn (half of the former DC duo) gathered her favorite books, records, and people around her and wrote what would become the first album from her new band. Recorded in the rugged hills of Oregon in the summer of 2009 with producer Richard Swift at the helm, What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood tells the story of loss and recovery, the music nodding to gospel and garage, the lyrics following a Zen trajectory. I wanted to make a record that felt like Neil Young doing Motown, Laura says, something simple and strong, old and new at once.

    Heartworms

The Shins are pleased to announce the release of their fifth studio album, Heartworms. In contrast to 2012's Port of Morrow, which debuted at #3 on the Billboard Top 200 and was nominated for a Best Alternative Album GRAMMY, Heartworms ushers in a return to the handmade. Heartworms is, as always, entirely written by James Mercer, with exception of So Now What (produced by band member Richard Swift). Heartworms is the first Shins album to be self-produced by Mercer since Oh, Inverted World in 2001.

Heartworms features Mercer's most diverse lyrical palette to date. The result is a cohesive, yet genre defying album marked by Mercer's distinct voice and melodic composition. Unified by his singular vision, Mercer creates a sound that is both familiar a nostalgic nod to the album's predecessors - and distinctly new. The album's first single, Name For You, is a resounding call for female empowerment inspired by Mercer's three daughters.

The Shins are James Mercer (lead vocals, guitar), Joe Plummer (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Yuuki Matthews (bass guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Mark Watrous (guitar), and Richard Swift (keyboards, piano, organ, synthesizers, percussion, backing vocals).

Library Catalog Music Series Volume 7: Music For Paradise Armor

Instruments of Science & Technology's Richard Swift (born Ricardo Sigilfredo Olivarez Swift-Ochoa, 1977) lives in the NW region of the U.S. He's made lots of different music. He normally sings, but not here. Music for Paradise Armor was made on varying mediums, a Tascam 4-track, an Otari 50/50 8-track, a 16-track machine by Studer and computer by Macintosh. There are, what Swift calls, modern clickity-clacks, zzzoops s s s and the occasional bleep bleep blaaaaap here. These sounds aim to reflect tech-centric life in the West.

When a broken finger hampered his ability to fret a guitar properly, Richard Swift returned to project B., an electronic endeavor titled Instruments of Science & Technology. Swift's second release under this moniker is a part of Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music series, and like the other volumes (which include contributions by Roberto Carlos Lange and James McAlister) it is comprised of meditative background instrumentals. Following format, Volume 7: Music for a Paradise Armor is a throwback to the spaced-out electronica and analog synthesizer sounds of the `70s. It's an unintrusive type of soundtrack that never demands attention, but washes by in a quick rush. Recorded using entirely analog equipment and tape machines (with some Mac Book assistance) the songs are filled with thumping ping-pong beats and synthesized textures that bear a resemblance to the deceptively complex soundscapes of Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk, or the Moog-style blips of circuit wizards Bruce Haack and Hot Butter. Comparatively, this outing is a little more ambient and sparse than the Music from the Films of R/Swift was, with an otherworldly German flavor. It's also other-timely; evoking a time when video games were played with paddles, presumably in a room with shag carpeting. ~ Jason Lymangrover

"Generationals have perfected its a-little-bit-of-everything pop."
    - Under the Radar

Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer, friends since high school, sought
producer Richard Swift to shake things up on this album. Alix
materialized as perhaps Generationals' most confident record, full
of history and as multiphase as Ted and Grant's friendship.

Built up with layer upon layer of rhythmic lines, computer noises,
RZA beats, and poppy vocals that sometimes sound like a Janet
Jackson/Prince face-off, Alix is everything T&G like about music:
old and new, vinyl and youtube, vocal chord and microkorg,
gathered up and arranged with great care into a good-smelling,
subtly sexy, catchy-or-die mish-mosh of sensibilities and time-warp senselessness, lightly peppered with that signature Swiftian
element, but undeniably Generationals in taste. As Swift had
decreed: 'tis a good idea to tear down and rebuild, but it's not
always necessary to start from scratch.

Hamilton Leithauser announces his debut solo album Black Hours via Ribbon Music -
inaugurating a new chapter in an already remarkable career from The Walkmen front man. The album
brings Leithauser full circle and then some, from lonely midwinter piano-and-vocals sessions, to a
loud, live Rock n Roll group and back again. Featuring Leithauser with a slew of talented collaborators
including Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend), Paul Maroon (The Walkmen), Morgan Henderson
(Fleet Foxes) and Richard Swift (The Shins/solo), the album showcases Leithauser at his most
    passionate, personal and free.

The video for the first single "Alexandra," which was directed by SXSW Film Festival Grand Jury award
winning director Tristan Patterson. The track was co-written by Hamilton Leithauser and Rostam
Batmanglij, the latter producing and mixing the track.

In its orchestrated rhythms, dynamic vocals, and generous production, Black Hours speaks from one
booming voice. The instrumentation provides muscle and texture: Maroon covering a wide range of
acoustic and electric guitars as well as grand piano; Batmanglij switching between guitar, harpsichord,
piano, bass and harmonica; Morgan Henderson from Fleet Foxes takes the marimba and upright bass,
and Richard Swift lays down impressive drums on seven tracks (Henderson & Swift will be accompanying
Leithauser on a full U.S. tour). Amber Coffman from the Dirty Projectors provides backing vocals on
several numbers and even Hugh McIntosh of Leithauser's first band, the Recoys, returns to the drum
stool for a pair of songs.

Principal recording was done in August 2013 at Vox Studios in Los Angeles, "the oldest private studio in
the world", where Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mercer, and countless others cut demos before
appearing on air at NBC studios, just across Melrose Ave.

After spending the better part of two years on the road (including festival stops at Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, Sasquatch, Monolith and tours with The Walkmen, Spoon, Richard Swift, The Cribs, White Denim and Tokyo Police Club) the White Rabbits hunkered down in their Brooklyn practice space to set about re-envisioning the dark pop of their critically acclaimed debut Fort Nightly, while adding new sounds and influences to achieve an original work. Visions Of Us On The Land

"Damien Jurado is every character in every Damien Jurado song. He is the gun, the purple anteater, the
paper wings, the avalanche, the air show disaster, Ohio, the ghost of his best friend's wife."

    - Father John Misty

Providing the ideal entry point for neophytes and an intoxicating aural high for the faithful, Damien
Jurado's new opus extends the hot streak ignited by 2012's Maraqopa and its 2014 follow-up Brothers and
Sisters of the Eternal Son. Cut once again with label-mate and super producer Richard Swift at the latter's
National Freedom recording facility in rural Oregon, Visions of Us On The Land completes the tale of an
individual who has had to disappear from society in order to discover some universal truths.

    Saint Bartlett

Saint Bartlett opens up with a grandiosity yet unheard on a Damien Jurado album. The album strips away the many layers of paint from the house down the street we know Jurado has occupied for the last decade. The new coat is exhilarating. It makes the whole neighborhood shine. It's a modest grandiosity; still homegrown. The mellotron swells, heavenly handclaps ring in stereo and big drums create a sky for the songs to fly in. And the words. Words spring forth from within the volcano of Jurado, full of hope. There's so much hope, in fact, that album opener Cloudy Shoes turns into a call-and-response with himself, as though it were a dialogue between two halves of himself.

Richard Swift's Spector-esque production is spot-on. He ferries Jurado across theriver, where the metamorphosis occurs. He then ferries him back, and it is through Swift's lens that we see Jurado not as a folk singer, but as a mystic somewhere between Van Morrison, Scott Walker and Wayne Coyne. Saint Bartlett was made entirely at Swift's National Freedom studio in Oregon, in just under a week with only Jurado and Swift as the performers.

    Take The Kids Off Broadway

Foxygen is the young bi-coastal songwriting duo of vocalist Sam France of Washington state and guitarist/keyboardist Jonathan Rado of New York. They are the raw, de-Wes Andersonization of The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Velvets, Bowie, etc. that a whole mess of young people desperately need. At the same time, they pull a very Anderson-type move wherein they paint an impressionistic and hyper-real (and instantly recognizable) portrait of specific places and times, and blurring the lines between time and place.

Yet, it never comes across as anything but absolutely modern music. They bring the freewheeling qualities of someone like Ariel Pink to those aforementioned influences to make for one of the most refreshing listens of the year. They are the real deal and total savants. Jagjaguwar is proud to introduce you to Foxygen and their bedroom masterpiece Take the Kids Off Broadway mixed by Richard Swift. Maraqopa

Damien Jurados newest collaboration with producer Richard Swift drops us into a brutal and benevolent landscape. The bold strokes and new turns the pair made with 2010s Saint Bartlett are taken even further. He throws open the gate on his oft insular dirges and allows them to do some real wilding out in the canyon. In Maraqopa, the vistas are miles-wide; the action is more dynamic; the close-ups sweaty and snarling.

The strummed desert blues that begins Nothing is the News quickly bursts open into an Eddie Hazel-worthy supernova shred session, all of it swirling in tinny-psych and Echoplexd howls. Weve never heard anything like this from Jurado. Fifteen years into his remarkable career, and he continues to blossom. Jurado and Swift establish themselves not only as inventive, trusting collaborators, but as one anothers spirit animals in American outsider songcraft, lone wolves in black sheeps clothing. Swift is the Ennio Morricone to Jurados Sergio Leone.

At Swifts National Freedom studios, the live-to-tape ethos allowed these songs to expand and retract like a great beasts breath. Every in-the-moment bell and whistle here is hung with a natural, casual care. And from this, each song offers up its own unique gift: the enchanting childrens choir that echoes each line of Jurados lament for innocence lost on Life Away from the Garden; the breezy bossa nova that begins This Time Next Year and rises as effortless as a smoke cloud into high-noon showdown pop; Reel to Reel's wobbly, Spector-symphony and its meta themes; and the wonderful falsetto vocal work Jurado pulls from himself on Museum of Flight.

    Springtime Carnivore

Evoking a mellow high on a warm Sunday afternoon, where everything is magnified and glows in
Technicolor, the debut album from Springtime Carnivore is a dreamy work of ebullient pop and
looming psychedelia. Springtime Carnivore is the nom de tune of Greta Morgan. Produced by
Morgan and sonic wizard Richard Swift (The Black Keys, The Shins, Foxygen) the album crackles with warmth, employing faded strings, blown-out drums, fuzzy guitars, and pawnshop keyboards to adorn widescreen vocals. Due out November 4th from Aquarium Drunkard's Autumn
Tone Records, the album builds on a foundation of classic folk and pop songwriting, synthesizing
those roots with production that turns and careens unexpectedly, shooting her melodic songs in
varied light and from surprising angles: "Name on a Matchbook" merges off kilter grooves to
a strident glide; "Sun Went Black" charges marries fuzzy power pop to wistful longing; "Other
Side of the Boundary" is an aching psychedelic ballad, at once intimate but also cosmically faraway. Springtime Carnivore makes songs that sound familiar but skewed. Already a music veteran, Springtime Carnivore recently completed a tour supporting legendary soft psych band The
Zombies, with whom she shares a distinct melodic touch. The songs on the album utilize classic
approaches, but are distinctly modern. There's an index card tacked to the wall of Morgan's rehearsal space. It reads "no cheap tricks," and its command is heeded on Springtime Carnivore's
    14 heavenly songs.

    City Music

City Music is an airplane descending over frozen lakes into Chicago. City Music is riding the Q Train out to Coney Island to smell the ocean and a morning in Philadelphia where great cranes reconfigure the buildings like an endless puzzle. City Music is also the new album by Kevin Morby.

Full of listless wanderlust, it's a collection inspired by and devoted to the metropolitan experience across America and beyond by a songwriter cast from his own mold. It is a collection crafted using the other side of its creator's brain, the jumping off point perhaps best once again encapsulated by an image. Here, Lou Reed and Patti Smith stare out at the listener, explains Morby.

City Music sees Morby joined once again by cohorts Megan Duffy (guitar) and Justin Sullivan (drums). Here the vocals were recorded at night, in darkness, overlooking a Pacific Ocean illuminated only by the stars, the wash and whisper of the ebbing tidal a distant soundtrack. The record was completed with Richard Swift in Oregon (producer of Foxygen, sometime member of The Black Keys). Here the album gives voice to all those cities speaking the same universal language of chaos and commerce and culture.

    Evermotion

Guster will release their first album in four years, Evermotion, fearlessly experimenting with new instruments and collaborations to create their most vibrant album yet. Produced by Shins keyboardist/Black Keys bassist Richard Swift, who has produced records for Damien Jurado, Foxygen and Stereolab, the new album bulldozes inhibitions, propelling the band to a harder-charging, more freewheeling sound.

The quartet of Ryan Miller, Adam Gardner, Brian Rosenworcel and Luke Reynolds recorded at Swift's Cottage Grove, OR studio in three whirlwind weeks - the fastest the band has ever finished an album. "We recorded with one drum microphone, used whole takes, didn't obsess over vocals or really edit things at all," said Rosenworcel. "It's a raw version of our band." Despite the stripped-down sessions, Guster's songs are packed with tight hooks, muscular guitar riffs, clanging percussion and surprisingly dark lyrics. The new album features adventurous turns on slide guitars, brassy trumpets and a glockenspiel, with sax and trombone accompaniment by Jon Natchez, whose stints with the War on Drugs, Beirut, Passion Pit and others have led NPR to call him "indie rock's most valuable sideman."

Guster started with two acoustic guitars and a pair of bongos and have since evolved and expanded their instrumentation, gaining a massive fan base that follows them to sold-out shows at New York's Radio City Music Hall and Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. The band's last release, 2010's 'Easy Wonderful,' earned their highest chart debut on the Billboard Top 200 and opened at #2 on iTunes. The album was praised by the Wall Street Journal for its "jangly, ebullient rock" and by USA Today for the "impeccable, infectious" songs that are "impossible not to feel," while Vanity Fair called it "feel-good" and Boston Globe hailed its "effervescent and thoughtful pop."

    Ownerless

Comprised of four singers/songwriters (Russell Pollard/J. Soda/Joel Graves/Elijah Thomson), the members of L.A.'s Everest boast some impressive pedigrees, having played with groups like Earlimart, Sebadoh, the Folk Implosion, Slydell, Mike Stinson, Great Northern, Alaska!, John Vanderslice and The Watson Twins. Sharing a mutual admiration for each other's respective track records, the four were drawn together by a common desire to make classic-sounding pop songs in the style of earthy bands like Wilco and Calexico.

Produced by Rob Schnapf and Richard Swift, Ownerless builds on the expansive sonic soundscapes the band created on their critically acclaimed debut Ghost Tones and follow-up On Approach. With guitars that range from bright and chiming to tense and meandering, harmonies that are both delicate and pastoral, and Pollard's gentle hazing vocals, it's easy to see why Everest have continued to gain new fans wherever they go, from month-long residences in cities such as Chicago and New York, to tours alongside Neil Young, Wilco and My Morning Jacket. Gatefold LP also includes a copy of the full album on CD.

    Built In Sun

Built In Sun is a new project from Joe Plummer, drummer for The Shins, Cold War Kids
and Mister Heavenly. Joe has also produced and co-recorded an all drum project
called Hew Time (with Dale Crover and Coady Willis from The Melvins), released on
Joyful Noise in 2014. Joe has also toured and recorded with Modest Mouse and The
Black Heart Procession drums and percussion over the course of the last 10 years.
Built In Sun started during touring breaks between The Shins "Port of Morrow" and
Cold War Kids "Hold My Home" releases. Built in Sun began as an instrumental idea,
with inspirations landing somewhere between John Cales "Fear", the punk vibe of the
Wipers and John Reis, and his favorite soundtrackists John Brion and Clint Mansell.
After the first instrumental mixes were finished (with the help of Richard Swift) he
decided that the tunes and melodies just might be cool enough to ask a few of his pals
to sing. Pall Jenkins (The Black Heart Procession) was the first. Within a day Pall sent
back John John, with solid scratch vocals. Another song came the next day, with new
ones following almost each day afterward .There was no use to ask anyone else.
The songs really came together with the addition of Pall's vocals and it felt great to
collaborate with him again. With this, Built In Sun was complete
