This past winter, Conor Oberst found himself hibernating in his hometown of Omaha after living in New York City for more than a decade. He emerged with the unexpectedly raw, unadorned solo album Ruminations, available on Nonesuch Records. I wasn't expecting to write a record, says Oberst. I honestly wasn't expecting to do much of anything. Winter in Omaha can have a paralyzing effect on a person but in this case it worked in my favor. I was just staying up late every night playing piano and watching the snow pile up outside the window. Next thing I knew I had burned through all the firewood in the garage and had more than enough songs for a record. I recorded them quick to get them down but then it just felt right to leave them alone.

Oberst went to ARC, the studio he built with his Bright Eyes bandmate and longtime friend Mike Mogis, to record that music. With the help of engineer Ben Brodin, he recorded all the songs in the span of 48 hours. The results are almost sketch-like in their sparseness, and they ultimately became the songs that comprise Ruminations. These tracks do not have the multi-layered instrumentation of the most recent Bright Eyes and solo albums: This is Oberst alone with his guitar, piano, and harmonica; the songs connect with some of the rough magic and anxious poetry that first brought him to the attention of the world, while their lyrical complexity and concerns make it obvious they could only have been written in the present. Conor Oberst has several live dates scheduled, including intimate solo performances in November and December at venues such as New York's Carnegie Hall and Nashville's Ryman Audtorium.

Part Of The Blue Note 75 Anniversary Vinyl Reissue Campaign

For the second of Cecil Taylor's two Blue Note albums (following Unit Structures), the innovative pianist utilized a sextet comprised of trumpeter Bill Dixon, altoist Jimmy Lyons, both Henry Grimes and Alan Silva on basses and drummer Andrew Cyrille. During the two lengthy pieces, Lyons' passionate solos contrast with Dixon's quieter ruminations while the music in general is unremittingly intense. Both of the Taylor Blue Notes are quite historic and near-classics but, despite this important documentation, Cecil Taylor (other than a pair of Paris concerts) would not appear on records again until 1973.

Drawing on the hardships and joys of their own lives and a musical history ranging from old world Celtic to modern day punk rock, the seven members of Flogging Molly have developed a charm and an ease over the years that makes them one of the most accessible bands performing today.

More mature yet retaining the immediacy that marks all of their work, the band's new album Float may find the widest audience acceptance of any Flogging Molly album to date. Hard charging tunes ôPaddyÆs Lamentö and ôYou WonÆt Make a Fool Out of Meö give way, as listeners have come to expect, to more sober ruminations on tracks like ôFloat.ö The overall effect is a symphonic layering of sound that possesses a unique rhythmic flow from boisterous to bereaved and back again. Nice, Nice, Very Nice

In August of 2009, Dan Mangan released his sophomore album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice in Canada. After three and a half years of touring his sleeper-hit debut, Postcards and Daydreaming, Dan was ready and eager to unveil a collection of lyrical ruminations that showcased his growth as a songwriter. The album shot to #1 on the iTunes Canada singer/songwriter album chart and at one point simultaneously held the #1 airplay positions CBC Radio 3, The Peak (Vancouver) and Canadian college radio. Rave reviews came from heavy hitting national music magazines as well as countless blogs and print media. Then came the news that Dan had won XM Radios Artist Of The Year as well as CBC Radio prizes for vocalist and song of the year for Robots. Britains NME magazine featured him as one of Canadas most promising acts. In late 2009, Arts & Crafts proudly welcomed Dan Mangan to its growing roster for the U.S. of Nice Nice Very Nice.

    The Orchard

Ra Ra Riots debut full-length, The Rhumb Line, was released in the summer of 2008, and it
brought with it some beautiful and sparkly ruminations on the fragile things in life (namely
life, death and love), much critical praise, and the kind of success thats measured not just
by sales (although 65k US album scans and 130k US track downloads is nothing to sneeze
at these days for a brand-new indie artist) but by appearances on Letterman, Ferguson, and
Conan, plus Lollapalooza, All Points West, and Sasquatch festival plays.
After spending much of the summer and fall of 2009 alternately touring the US with Death
Cab for Cutie, headlining their own packed shows, and retreating to a country property in
upstate New York to write and record, the band announced this summers upcoming arrival of
their new album The Orchard on the eve of a 2010 appearance at the prestigious Coachella

Anticipation is feverish for new music, and the new album is an incredibly self-assured step
for the band, delivering both hook-laden pop jams like first single Boy and the
new-but-familiar-to-live-audiences Too Dramatic and ruminative slow-burns like the Anton
Chekov/Kate Bush-inspired The Orchard and album-closer Keep It Quiet.

    Welcome To Success

What is success? And what's left after the party's over? Backed by the lush, vivid beats of Canadian producer Factor, Bay Area emcee Kirby Dominant ponders the perils of self-actualization on their third LP together as Paranoid Castle. Are the trappings of success smoke screens for inner turmoil or are they success itself? Do the drugs and women provide joy or fleeting escape? How long can one keep clawing out at temporary pleasures in the wake of unresolved anguish? Kirby's narratives reflect upon these and a host of other grown man queries. And if the answers don't come, what does come, is hope. "If the sun comes back to town, I want to be around," Kirby sings on the catchy, ebullient hook to "Fear of Missing Out." He maintains his sense of humor in the face of being broke on "Laugh Out Loud," drops a hilarious one-liner here and there on "Cemetery," and ands traces of positivity through gritted teeth. Welcome To Success, the culmination of a 13-year working relationship, showcases two seasoned vets playing on each other's strengths and making a grand artistic statement. Kirby continues to sharpen his delivery and singing chops with each release, often rapping and crooning on the same track and shifting moods between verse and chorus. Incorporating live instrumentation and samples, Factor's dynamic beats accentuate the emcee's ruminations while making statements of their own. Welcome To Success is grown man music, unafraid to ask painful questions and wise enough to make you laugh if you don't like the answers.

What A Terrible World, What A Beautiful World

What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World is The Decemberists' 7th studio album. Produced by the band and long-time collaborator Tucker Martine (My Morning Jacket, Neko Case), it is The Decemberists' first full-length studio album since 2011's The King Is Dead, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in Jan of 2011. The Decemberists have sold more than 1.6 million albums to date in the US. From the soaring first single 'Make You Better'to the acoustic ruminations of the Nick Drake influenced 'Lake Song' and triumphant closer 'A Beginning Song', What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World, is the band's most varied and dynamic work, both musically and emotionally. Since their earliest recordings more than a decade ago, the
Decemberists have always been known for their sense of scope and daring-from "The Tain," an eighteen-and-a-half minute 2004 single based on an Irish myth to their last two ambitious, thematic albums, The Hazards of Love and The King is Dead. This time, though, Meloy explains that they took a different approach: "Let's make sure the songs are good, and eventually the record will present itself."

    Pictures Of Saint Paul Street

The songs on "Pictures of Saint Paul Street" are lush & beautiful autopsies of society's underbelly, with stark and brutally honest ruminations on humanity. Songs like "A Sea of Suckers" & "Pursue The Nightlife" pull no punches, while "Jailbirds & Vagabonds" and "Blues For A Pecan Tree" carouse on a more abstract, human (almost romantic) level. By the time you've hit the album's centerpiece; "Bullshit Society", Ashley's songs move from ballads of hopeless misery to rallying anthems for the dispossessed. The people & artists who move further to the fringe as power and greed overtake our planet, a situation all too familiar to Ashley as he was forced to relocate his long-running Creamery Studio from it's long time home due to the rampant gentrification of the Bay Area (the former studio building now houses luxury lofts).

"Pictures of Saint Paul Street" isn't always an easy listen, but that's the point; the journey to salvation isn't easy or pretty. The protagonist in many of Ashley's songs may be Ashley himself - a true artist willing to admit he's nowhere near perfect, and honest enough to document his sunrises & sunsets no matter if they occur in his own backyard, or on a barroom floor.

    Atrocity Exhibition

He is unmatchable in flow, delivery, and voice. Danny Brown has all the tools to be the greatest working rapper. -PITCHFORK

Atrocity Exhibition is one of the freshest and boldest-sounding rap albums in recent memory, a sonic swirl inspired by the work of Talking Heads and Joy Division that nonetheless sounds like nothing else from the past or present. Featuring contributions from producers like Evian Christ, Petite Noir (who also lends vocals to the world-weary clang of "Rolling Stone"), Black Milk, the Alchemist and frequent collaborator Paul White, the album is full of laser-beam guitars, gym-teacher whistles, creaking vocal samples, and air-raid drones. It is the most intriguing take on hallucinatory rap since the heady heights of Cold Vein or Madvillainy.

Known for his wide range of collaborations, including everyone from Purity Ring, the Avalanches and Rustie to Schoolboy Q, E-40, and Ghostface Killah, Atrocity Exhibition sees a continuation of this carefully curated mix. Kelela lends her snaking vocals to the intriguingly murky "From the Ground," Cypress Hill's B-Real delivers "Get Hi"'s languid hook, and Earl Sweatshirt, Kendrick Lamar, and Ab-Soul all convene for the twinkling ominousness of album standout "Really Doe." "When XXX came out, all of us were peers, and those were the three rappers who were the best," Brown explains on having the star-packed trio appear on the track. "I felt like we were competitors, they made me want to step my game up. I wanted to put the hottest rappers in the game on there."

This album is a highly personal take on Brown's ruminations on life and the changes that have occurred -and those that didn't - following the ups and downs of career success. Atrocity Exhibition makes for a thrilling third installment in the Danny Brown biopic, one not to be missed.

The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me (Black Vinyl)

    Black Vinyl Version

When Brand New released Deja Entendu in mid-2003, it caught a lot of their fans off guard. It found the band taking a stylistic leap forward from the clever (albeit cookie-cutter) pop-punk of their 2001 debut, exploring expanded sonic textures and indie rock overtones, their urgent choruses tempered by acoustic musings and softer introspections. It all seemed very deliberate yet completely natural all the same, and the record was an underground smash. Something even more substantial was definitely brewing beneath the band's emo façade, and as a result, Brand New's follow-up was hotly anticipated for the three years it took the band to release it. The resulting The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me is the completion of their pop-punk molting process and one of the best surprises -- that isn't really a surprise at all -- to come out of 2006. Even when they were playing straightforward pop-punk ditties, Brand New had an edge to them that made them seem smarter than their peers; now they sound even older and stronger (and like they've been listening to a lot of '90s college and indie rock). This record is dark and dense, yet accessible, a shadowy air permeating every crevice where Jesse Lacey's plaintive and often tortured lyrics aren't already residing. He draws listeners in with vulnerable ruminations and questions of love, death, self, and religion, and his vocal inflections bring as much meaning to the table as his carefully chosen words. The opening Sowing Season ebbs and flows steadily, moving along under light guitar before exploding with percussion, Lacey ably switching from a hushed delivery into an anguished cry of emotion before falling back down again effortlessly. With it, Brand New sets up the somber intensity of the record straightaway. Textural and sonic layers unfold at every turn -- punching drums and trembling guitars here, aching vocals and subtle touches of string there -- and the album moves with a directed force that seems so naturally powerful and uncontrived, it's almost ridiculous to think that the band cut its teeth with poppy anthems like Jude Law and a Summer Abroad. The Devil and God is not an album of hooks; the excellent percussive stomp of The Archers Bows Have Broken is the most immediate here, but songs get stuck in the brain nonetheless and demand repeated spins. Old fans especially smitten by Deja's Play Crack the Sky have no excuse not to love everything about this record, as even lengthy tracks (like the near-eight-minute Limousine or the chill-inducing beauty of Jesus) are completely compelling. People who were ready to discount Brand New into the emo/TRL heap of the 2000s better rethink their stance; Brand New seems to know exactly what they're doing and this record is a testament to their ability to stay true to themselves. Whether they want to stay underground or fully break into the mainstream, this album has the potential to do either. Either way it doesn't really matter -- whatever happens, there's no denying how excellent this record is.

    7 (Pre-Order)

7 is our 7th full-length record. At its release, we will have been a band
for over 13 years. We have now written and released a total of 77
    songs together.

Throughout the process of recording 7, our goal was rebirth and
rejuvenation. We wanted to rethink old methods and shed some
self-imposed limitations. In the past, we often limited our writing to
parts that we could perform live. On 7, we decided to follow whatever
came naturally. As a result, there are some songs with no guitar, and
some without keyboard. There are songs with layers and production
that we could never recreate live, and that is exciting to us. Basically,
we let our creative moods, instead of instrumentation, dictate the
    album's feel.

For 7, we built a home studio, and began all of the songs there.
Whenever we had a group of 3-4 songs that we were excited about, we
would go to a "proper" recording studio and finish recording them
there, in the process shortening the amount of time between the
original idea and the finished song (of the album's 11 songs, 8 were
finished at Carriage House in Stamford, CT and 2 at Palmetto Studio
in Los Angeles). 7 didn't have a producer in the traditional sense.
James Barone, who became our live drummer in 2016, played on the
entire record. We also worked with Sonic Boom (Peter Kember), who
became a great force on this record by shedding conventions and
helping to keep the songs alive, fresh and protected from the destructive
    forces of recording-studio over-production/over-perfection.

The societal insanity of 2016-17 was also deeply influential, as it
must be for most artists these days. Looking back, there is quite a bit
of chaos in these songs, and a pervasive dark field that we had little
control over. The discussions surrounding women's issues were a
constant source of inspiration and questioning. The energy, lyrics and
moods of much of this record grew from ruminations on the roles,
pressures and conditions that our society places on women, past and
present. The twisted double edge of glamour, with its perils and
perfect moments, was an endless source. In a more general sense, we
are interested by the human mind's (and nature's) tendency to create
forces equal and opposite to those present. Thematically, this record
often deals with the beauty that arises in dealing with darkness; the
empathy and love that grows from collective trauma; the place one
reaches when they accept rather than deny.

While the title is simply a number that represents our seventh record,
the number 7 does represent some interesting connections in
numerology. 1 and 7 have always shared a common look, so 7 feels
like the perfect step in the sequence to act as a restart or "semi-first."
Most early religions also had a fascination with 7 as being the highest
level of spirituality, as in Seventh Heaven." At our best creative
moments, we felt we were channeling some kind of heavy truth, and
we sincerely hope the listeners will feel that.

Reissued in partnership with Brooklyn's Mixpak Records, "PAGAN" includes two new revisions of tracks highlighted on the LP's original 2016 release, "Sweetness" and the breakthrough single, "Lifted."

PAGAN is already among the most acclaimed dance/electronic releases in recent memory, with Tiny Mix Tapes declaring it minimal pop music to maximal ends... (Palmistry) uses simple synth melodies, antiseptic beats, and a lilting, candid vocal style to craft an emotionally affecting rumination on absence/presence. In stripping these songs back to their essence, he achieves something special, tracing a link to a common musical language and set of that is as striking as it is affecting.

Kenny Burrell has appeared on so many essential jazz
recordings that jazz history and his biography seem
    irretrievably intertwined. Billie Holiday's valedictory
rumination Lady Sings the Blues, Jimmy Smith's epochal funk
throwdown Back at the Chicken Shack, Tony Bennett's Carnegie
Hall debut - Kenny Burrell played guitar for them all. Even Jimi
Hendrix once remarked, Kenny Burrell - that's the sound I'm
looking for. Here is Burrell captured live at the West-Coast jazz
mecca, Catalina's, in an easy-going program of some of his
most-requested tunes along with a few of his personal favorites

    Hate (Picture Disc)

    Limited Edition Of 1,000

    First Time On Picture Disc

Nuclear Blast brings you a new ritual offering of darkness from Thy Art Is Murder. Simply titled Hate, the band's second full length is the pointed result of their growing dissatisfaction with all aspects of modern life - political, religious, social and environmental - everyone is to blame. Fusing the blasting technicality of metal luminaries The Black Dahlia Murder with thunderous breakdowns and the intensity born of their nascent hometown scene; the blackened grandeur of Behemoth and the pit churning groove of Tampa originators Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse, the furious musical arrangements provide a bloody canvas for vocalist CJ McMahon's outpourings of bile. No strangers to stoking controversy and criticism, the band have not toned down their art for the sake of palatability and have introduced a morose melodicism into their maelstrom - the rumination before pulling the trigger.

Remastered Reissue On 180 Gram Vinyl

After the huge commercial breakthrough of Superunknown-where Soundgarden expanded its attack to include pop hooks, psychedelic riffage, and production values-the foursome decided to work harder at rocking harder.

From the opening chords of Pretty Noose, the group brings out the brawny guitars and slightly leavens them with sweet harmonies. With Rhinosaur, Kim Thayil churns out more guitar-hero riffs for young America to master. Zero Chance turns to the quiet side as Chris Cornell ruminates in a depressive mood: Born without a friend/And bound to die alone. Ty Cobb floors the acceleration with no brakes. Robin Trower's Bridge of Sighs is evoked within Tighten & Tighter, while No Attention ventures toward Rocks-era Aerosmith, an occasional Soundgarden touchstone.

The album's obvious centerpiece, however, is Blow Up the Outside World, with its mix of acoustic and electric guitars; it builds toward a cathartic chorus that rings true of everything Soundgarden could ever be.

Faithful Reproduction Of The Original Artwork

Rooted in the steamy backroads of Texas and deep-fried at a Memphis recording studio, Joseph's Stoned Age Man was served up like a sizzling hot rattlesnake appetizer slathered in fuzz-blooz grease in 1969. Legend has it that the titles of eight of the album's nine songs came before they were written on the spot, which speaks volumes for the talents of Joseph (aka, Joseph Longeria) - who A&R man Steve Tyrell signed to Scepter Records after witnessing the Lone Star State bluesman gig with B.B. King and T-Bone Burnett. Brandishing his guitar like a Cro-Magnon's club, Joseph mixes his fuzzy licks with meat-grinder vocals as he loudly ruminates of fattened snakes, fish heads, mountains, cavemen and gumbo in the maddest peyote hallucination Alley Oop never had. Long revered among collectors, this fine slab o' rock gets its first-ever reissue from the original masters, pressed at RTI onto 180 grams of cold hard vinyl that'll rip your turntable from its hinges.

Teenage Fanclub's Shadows is part of the
Merge Records 25th anniversary reissue series.

Originally released in 2010, Shadows picks up on the
introspective, world-weary quality of Man-Made but also
delivers a bit of the classic bright pop the band is known
for. Where Man-Made found the band struggling with
feeling like life was an illusion on the dogged "It's All in My
Mind," here you get Love's breezy baroque pop statement
of purpose "Sometimes I Don't Need to Believe in
Anything," with its chorus of layered synth, strings, flutes,
    and sundry wind instruments.

Similarly, Blake's leadoff single "Baby Lee" is a romantic
'60s-styled folk-rocker that veritably shimmers with
positive vibes. Elsewhere, Love's "Into the City" is a
sunshine pop/country-rock love letter to urban days in the
sun and McGinley's "Today Never Ends" is slow-burn
psychedelic country-rock rumination on the past, the
present, and a perfect day that never ends. If the day is as
sun-drenched and relaxed as the songs on Shadows implies,
then may it and Teenage Fanclub go on and on

If the opening notes on Joe Pug's new LP "Windfall" are a bit disorienting, his fans won't likely be surprised. The Austin, TX singer songwriter has made a habit of defying expectations so the piano-driven "Bright Beginnings" and the atmospheric rumination of "Great Hosannas" are just further indication that he's quite comfortable stepping outside of the guy-with-a-guitar trappings of the genre.

His rise has been as improbable as it has been impressive. After dropping out of college and taking on work as a carpenter in Chicago, he got his musical start by providing CDs for his fans to pass along to their friends. This led to a string of sold out shows and a record deal with Nashville indie Lightning Rod Records (Jason Isbell, Billy Joe Shaver). As he toured behind "Messenger" (2010) and The Great Despiser (2012) it was with a band that looked as much like a jazz trio as an Americana band. "I never quite found a live band that captured what I was aiming for until I connected with Greg [Tuohey--electric guitar] and Matt [Schuessler--upright bass]. It was an arrangement that maybe didn't make a ton of sense on paper but 10 minutes into the first rehearsal I knew this was going to be my band." The following years would have them on the road for over four hundred shows, including stops at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and The Newport Folk Festival.

    Watermelon, Chicken & Grits

Like their moniker suggests, the six-man hip-hop group known as Nappy Roots are raw and untamed, yet deeply connected to the musical past. The Kentucky-based collective (Big V, Ron Clutch, Fishscales, R. Prophet, B. Stille, and Skinny DeVille) first made a name for themselves with their two independently released collections - 1998's COUNTRY FRIED CESS and and 1999's NO COMB, NO BRUSH, NO FADE, NO PERM - as well as with live shows alongside such hip-hop stars as Digital Underground, Youngbloods, Jim Crowes, 112, Cashmoney Millionaire, 8 Ball, Ruffryders, MJG, Sole, and Twista. In addition, the group scored with their version of Riches To Rags (Mmmkay), which was featured on Atlantic's 1999 release, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE - SOUTH PARK: BIGGER, LONGER & UNCUT.

Now, with their long-awaited Atlantic Records debut, WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ, Nappy Roots are ready to spread their unique sound and vision from coast to coast. The group's organically funky hip-hop stylings blend serious lyrical science and Dirty South grooves, notably on tracks like the ruminating Life's A Risk and the block-rockin' party anthem, Ballin On A Budget. Produced by such esteemed hip-hop studio whizes as Carlos Broady (The Notorious B.I.G., Lil' Kim, Black Rob, India.Aire), Mike City (Sunshine Anderson, Bilal), the Trackboyz (Abyss), Jazze Pha (Ludacris, Too $hort), and Troy Johnson (Ray-J, Lil' Mo), WATERMELON, CHICKEN, AND GRITZ is likely to propel Nappy Roots to the forefront of modern hip-hop and beyond.

Off The Grid - Doin' It Dylan (On Sale)

Back when Charlie Daniels was a working musician and not a star, he played on three albums by Bob Dylan -- he played guitar and bass on the sessions that became Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait, and New Morning (which means he also shows up on the acclaimed 2013 archival release, Another Self Portrait (1969-1971)) -- so his decision to cut an album devoted to Dylan is not out of the blue. What is surprising is that Off the Grid: Doin' It Dylan isn't one of Daniels' tossed-off latter-day albums, but rather a record where Charlie really digs in, savoring the interplay of his band as well as how the words feel in his mouth. Daniels does indeed choose a few of Bob's densely written songs -- Mr. Tambourine Man, A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall, and Just Like a Woman are here, none of them seeming like easy fits on paper, but each carried with conviction by Charlie -- along with country-rockers that are sure bets: the rollicking ditty Country Pie, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, and Tangled Up in Blue, whose narrative gets trimmed down and sped up without losing its power. That impassioned reworking of Tangled Up in Blue -- which finds a counterpart in a nicely raucous back porch rendition of Quinn the Eskimo -- goes a long way toward explaining what's so joyous about Off the Grid. Daniels enjoys not the words of Dylan so much as the melodies and music, using these songs not as ruminative reflection but full-bore celebration. Even the ballads -- and there are a few here -- are played for keeps and if that music-first emphasis is a relative rarity among Dylan tributes, it's also true that it's been a long time since Daniels has sounded as engaged on a record as he is here.
