    Bright Sunny South

Nonesuch Records releases Sam Amidon's label debut, Bright Sunny South in 2013. Produced by Amidon with his childhood friend and longtime collaborator Thomas Bartlett (a.k.a. Doveman) and legendary English engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club, Vashti Bunyan, R.E.M.) and recorded in London, the record features a band made up of Bartlett and multi-instrumentalists Shahzad Ismaily and Chris Vatalaro. Jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler also makes a cameo. Amidon himself not only sings but also plays banjo, fiddle, acoustic guitar, and piano on the album.

Amidon describes Bright Sunny South as a "a lonesome record" and a return to the more spare sound of his 2007 self-recorded debut, But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted: "There was an atmospheric quality to my last two records; those albums are like a garden of sounds," says Amidon, "but this one is more of a journey, a winding path. The band comes rushing in and then they disappear. It comes from more of a darker, internal space."

A longtime admirer of Boys' work, Amidon was particularly enamored of his recordings with Martin Carthy in the 1970s, as well as the Ali Farka TourÉ/Toumani DiabatÉ duet albums on World Circuit/Nonesuch: "Those are so beautiful. I listened to all of that. I loved the sense of documentation, the unadorned quality. Everything sounded so clear."

The Vermont-born and raised, London-based Amidon is known for his reworking of traditional melodies into a new form. In addition to country ballads and shape-note hymns, Bright Sunny South features interpretations of traditional and contemporary songs, including Tim McGraw's "My Old Friend" and Mariah Carey's "Shake It Off." The record also includes a version of "Weeping Mary," a shape-note hymn that his parents, Peter and Mary Alice Amidon, had recorded with the Vermont-based Word of Mouth Chorus for Nonesuch Records on the 1977 disc Rivers of Delight: American Folk Hymns from the Sacred Harp Tradition.

Bright Sunny South follows 2010's critically acclaimed I See the Sign, which earned Amidon praise from SPIN for his "quirky alchemy contrasting pretty sounds with violent lyrical undercurrents" and Pitchfork, which said, "[Amidon's] interpretations are so singular that it stops mattering how (or if) they existed before."

Prior to I See the Sign, which was released on the Iceland-based label Bedroom Community, Amidon released But This Chicken Proved Falsehearted (Plug Research, 2007) and All Is Well (Bedroom Community, 2008). In addition to his solo albums, Amidon has collaborated on performances pieces with musical polymath Nico Muhly, toured as part of Thomas Bartlett's group Doveman and the Brooklyn band Stars Like Fleas, collaborated with Beth Orton, and embarked on a series of live shows with the guitarist Bill Frisell.

    All We Grow

The debut album from S. Carey, All We Grow, is the result of a young lifetime spent immersed in music. As a band member of Bon Iver from the very beginning, Sean Carey witnessed a flip of his formal training to step firmly into a worldwide-touring rock band. His performance degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin and his love for jazz drumming prepared him for a central role in the inspiring force of the Bon Iver live show.

All We Grow is a convergence of Carey's Waltz For Debby-era Bill Evans inflected jazz tendencies, and traditional rock band experience, taking leads from Mark Hollis' Talk Talk. It also retests the waters of modern classical composition, investigating the moodiness generated by percussive repetition in a manner familiar to fans of Steve Reich. In his downtime on tour with Bon Iver, Sean would spend time composing. During infrequent tour breaks at home he would patiently record these pieces, adding layers eachtime. Two years later, the parts converged to make an album.

For as much room to breathe as Carey allows his compositions, there are incredibly dynamic moments of bombast held right next to moments of subtle depth and texture. Engineered by Jaime Hansen and Brian Joseph, intermittently at home and at April Base (Justin Vernon's studio outside Eau Claire), All We Grow is an all-encompassing headphone experience as intimate as chamber music and as ambitious as a symphony.

    Supermoon

Recorded primarily during the perigee-syzygy (also known as the super moon) of August 2014,
the Supermoon EP from S. Carey is a study in scale, space, and proximity. These songs are a new
and closer look into existing works from both S. Carey's renowned full-lengths, 2010's All We
Grow and 2014's Range of Light. With Supermoon, Carey has broken these songs down to their
essential, acoustic parts with his forever humming vocals laid over top, lilting yet percussive
piano, and a subtle swath of harmonic strings. You can hear Carey's breath between words and
the pat of his fingers on the keys; you can hear the living room in which his family's baby grand
piano sits. These songs are beautiful, intimate and so potently personal. This collection is a stark
presentation of S. Carey laid bare, an open invitation for the listener to climb into his world.

One particularly poignant piece is the re-imagined Range of Light closer, Neverending
Fountain, perhaps an apt metaphor for the life of the songs themselves. Says Carey, The longer
you spend with a song, the more you can see it in its pure form. Supermoon also features a
heartrending cover of Bullet Proof.. I Wish I Was from Radiohead's classic album The Bends,
and a new song, the EP's namesake, Supermoon, which takes its inspiration, like much of
Carey's work, from the natural world around him.

Another source of inspiration quoted by Carey is the excitement of working out arrangements
for pre-existing songs on the spot, for various sessions on tour. He brought that spirit to the
recording of Supermoon, which took place over the course of a single weekend. Already known
as an artist of impeccable craft, S. Carey worked with long-time friends and collaborators (Mike
Noyce played viola, Zach Hanson engineered, mixed, and mastered) to add a chapter to the still
unfolding story of Sean Carey as an artist. We can hear the songwriting, singing and
performance for what it truly is; understated, true and pure beauty.

    Hoyas

Hoyas by S. Carey is a hospitable statement about love, longing and the celebration of knowing it well. You will find the familiar S. Carey modern classical repetition pushed into the vernacular of electronic music and beat making. This is the warmest electronic music you'll ever meet. The beats swing, stutter and pulse while each instrument retains a heightened awareness of its form and function within the larger family of voices. Hoyas was mixed and produced by the Grammy Award Winning team of Justin Vernon and Brian Joseph of Bon Iver.

    The King Of Whys

Owen - the acclaimed solo musical guise of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Mike Kinsella - has made an astonishing leap forward with THE KING OF WHYS, the first work in his two-decade-plus career to be made entirely outside of his beloved Chicago home base. Produced by S. Carey over 18 days last winter at Justin Vernon's April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI, the album is Owen's most inspired and evocative thus far, interpolating a group dynamic into what has long been an intensely intimate sound.

    Range Of Light

    S. Carey's chosen musical expression is a hugely beatific, restorative panorama of beauty - perfect given how
landscape and the wonder of nature inspire much of Carey's imagery. His new album Range of Light - the
follow-up to his 2010 debut All We Grow-takes its title from the name that 19th century naturalist John Muir
    - Carey's hero - gave to California's Sierra Nevada, and follows suit with a dazzling array of musical light and
shade, drawn from Carey's love of jazz, modern classical and Americana. Like a weathered mountain range
changing shadow form and color, or the ebb and flow of a river's current, his music is simultaneously restful
and rhythmic, complex and simple, and always evolving.

"My music has specific connections to nature and place, my surroundings, and my experiences," says Carey. I
travelled the Sierra Nevada area many times as a boy, fishing small mountain streams, hiking to the top of'half
dome', exploring the Redwood groves at Wawona, in awe of the Yosemite Valley. The term,'Range of Light',to
me, denotes the spectrum of light and dark a person can have in their life - peaks and valleys of happiness,
sorrow, challenges and growth - for me most recently and more specifically: marriage, having a baby, and
maintaining a spiritual connection to nature, place, friends and family as an adult."

While he studied classical percussion and piano at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, Carey imbibed
rhythmic minimalists such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Immediately after graduating in 2007, he caught
wind that Eau Claire resident Justin Vernon was forming a band to take his For Emma, Forever Ago opus on
the road. Carey learnt the drum and vocal parts for the album, rehearsed with Vernon, and has been a mainstay
of the Bon Iver live band ever since.

While on tour with Bon Iver, Carey developed his own song writing ambitions, and after many less than
frequent recording sessions between tours, released All We Grow in 2010. Those nine songs sat between a
folk/modern classical hybrid and rarefied jazz climes. Carey's warm melodic nuances, reflected in the lush
folds of his singing, added to the mutable percussive syncopations of his instrumentation.

Range of Light incorporates elements of his previous work, but also amplifies Carey's percussive proclivities,
and is altogether more developed than its predecessors, with more input on the performance and even
composition side from the band of musicians and best friends he assembled originally to bring All We Grow
to life in the live setting. "Therewere times during recording sessions when there were three percussionists, all
with different styles and fortes, playing at once, adding different textures."

From the flurry of violins over a circular rhythm in 'Crown The Pines' and the beautiful cries of 'Alpenglow',
to the pensive depths of songs like 'Fire-scene' and 'The Dome', Range of Light is a still life of an artist in this
particular stage of his life; a stage that has been met with the highest of peaks and the lowest of depths all
within the range each of us treads through.

    Baby

Freedom often begins from terror, and White Hinterland's third album, Baby, addresses the fear
that comes along with breaking out of established rituals, or leaving a comfortable place, and
striking out into the unknown. Four years after her profile-raising release, Kairos(2010), Casey
Dienel aka White Hinterland has taken the gloves off and knuckled down to produce a deep,
dark, heady mix of songs. After two and a half years of writing and recording material in
Montreal and Portland, OR, Dienel moved back in to her family home in Scituate, MA. There
she forged a new aesthetic, spending five months building her own studio, The Glades, in her
parents' basement - the same space where she practiced piano and vocal lessons as a child.
Determined to helm her new album, Dienel spent months studying production, poring over
YouTube tutorials about Protools, mic'ing techniques and other minutiae.

Armed with this self-taught skill and her new studio, Dienel set forth to subvert the existing
power structure of male producer as svengali and female artist as figurehead (see: Billy
Corgan/Courtney Love, Timbaland/Aaliyah, Phil Spector/The Ronettes). She created her own,
new path on Baby, which showcases her as a singer/songwriter/producer who has only become
bolder and more resolute over the past three-plus years. Calling in her friends as pinch hitters,
Dienel worked acclaimed musicians Sean Carey (Bon Iver, S. Carey), Neal Morgan (Joanna
Newsom, Bill Callahan), and Cole Kamen-Green (BeyoncÉ).

On her first four records, Dienel projected her fears and fantasies onto imaginary characters,
role play, and lush atmospherics. If Kairos was a work of atmosphere, then Baby sits at the
opposite end of that spectrum. Baby is about song craft. It is forceful, rooted in the physicality
of the voice, percussion and piano, and it is about getting straight to the point. Where her earlier
work occasionally showcased a strong Joni Mitchell influence, on new songs like "David" she
finds herself in Fiona Apple territory. Her lifelong love of R&B and gospel also comes to the fore,
these resonant styles complement and contrast the sharp dynamic shifts, booming drums, and
blasts of brass. On Metronome, Baby's centerpiece and most assertive track, she declares, All
day long I'm a boss. She's not asking for someone to serve as a steadying influence, but instead
requiring that it's necessary to keep up with her. It is the past three years of her life distilled into
song: joy, heartbreak, frustration, longing, disappointment, anger, and loss accumulated, poured
out and reborn in this new, unflinching release.

    Bright Side Of Life

Santa Barbara, California-based foursome Rebelution play a jamband-tinged blend of reggae and rock that, on the strength of just two self-releases (an EP and a full-length debut, 2007's COURAGE TO GROW), has managed to garner a devoted fan following, not to mention iTunes pick for Best Reggae Album of 2007. The band's follow-up, THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE, builds on a solid foundation of dub-inflected drums and bass, augmented by keyboardist Rory Carey's bright, percussive vamps on B3 organ and guitarist Eric Rachmany's bluesy Santana-esque blasts, particularly on the horn-driven positivity anthem, The Bright Side of Life.

    Join The Dots

They're back! It's only a little bit more than a year since London's
TOY graced us with their s/t record. Now they Join The Dots with
11 new tracks. TOY have quickly established a sound that is as
modernistic as it is faithful to the spirit of psychedelia of decades
past, marrying sophisticated chord progressions with a cornucopia
of effects, enigmatic lyricism and driving Motorik rhythms.

As with their debut, Join The Dots was recorded mostly live with
Dan Carey at the helm, although increased studio time has enabled
the band to experiment more with Carey's laboratory of effects and
pre-amps, and embellish the tracks with overdubs. The album is
both a companion to and extension of the electric blueprint plotted
out on Toy, filled as it is with increasingly unpredictable, illuminating
sonic ideas and songs that shift and transform with seemingly
    effortless intricacy

The band admit to enjoying playing late at night to people in
altered states, and in turn the tracks are frequently altered: instrumental sections in particular are structured freely, enabling the band
to exploit the bleed and feedback of each venue to produce
endless variations of the same songs.

    This Is Another Life

Case Studies is the musical project of Jesse Lortz, a prolific Seattle based
musician. His lyrics wax and wane with truth and bare tales from his life.
Melodies surface as lines hummed in the in-between times. These easy
melodies coat the heavy subject matter of suicide, heartbreak, grief and
regret. As with his previous project, The Dutchess and the Duke, listening to Case Studies feels like taking part in an exploration of sentimental
landscapes. They appear and fade like dark light lingering on the horizon.
The meandering verse journeys to seek comfort in loneliness and vulnerability. Through the twisted subconscious, dawn breaks, breathing its
light on both the joyous and dismal occasions that mark life's milestones,
each song a continuation of his story, each song a probing examination of
    motivation and consequences.

This Is Another Life is Lortz's second full-length solo release on Sacred
Bones. It is the follow-up album to 2011's highly acclaimed The World is
Just a Shape to Fill the Night. This is Another Life features guest vocals by
Marissa Nadler on "Villain" and has the same producer and engineer,
Greg Ashley of the band Gris Gris, as the last album. Ashley also plays
percussion, organ and adds additional vocals & guitar. Lortz is also helped
out by Jon Parker (guitar / piano), Oscar Michel (bass), Joe Haener (percussion), Carey Lamprecht (violin) and Shawn Alpay (cello).

    Cry Cry Cry

    Etching On Side D

The soaring choruses, rousing anthems, sprawling guitars and chaotic keys that make up Wolf Parade are on proud display over the course of Cry Cry Cry, the band's thunderous first album in seven years. That unique combination of sounds and influences, spearheaded by electric co-frontmen Spencer Krug and Dan Boeckner-a complex yet relatable, energetic brew of glam, prog, synth-rock, and satisfying discomfort-helped define 2000s indie rock with three critically celebrated albums, and propelled a growing Wolf Parade fandom even after the band went on a then-indefinite hiatus in 2010.

The upcoming return marks their first to be produced by Pacific Northwest legend John Goodmanson (Bikini Kill, Sleater-Kinney, Unwound) at Robert Lang Studios outside of Seattle, and is accompanied by a renewed focus and the creativity of a band that took their time getting exactly where they needed to be. It's also a homecoming to Sub Pop, which released all three of the band's previous albums. "The band itself is almost a fifth member of the band, something more or at least different than the sum of its parts," says Krug. "We don't know who or what is responsible for our sound, it's just something that naturally and consistently comes from this particular combo of musicians." In the time apart, the band scattered geographically and focused on family and other work--Spencer on his solo project Moonface, Dan on his bands Handsome Furs, Operators, and Divine Fits (with Spoon's Britt Daniel), and Dante De Caro on records with Carey Mercer's Frog Eyes and Blackout Beach. And that time allowed for an even stronger, tighter band to emerge. Wolf Parade have always tended to make albums that react against their previous work.

Compared to 2010's relatively sparse rocker Expo 86, Cry Cry Cry is more deliberate in its arrangements and embrace of the studio process, as evidenced by songs like "Valley Boy," a Bowie-inflected anthem for which Spencer wrote lyrics after Leonard Cohen died the day before the 2016 election. "You're Dreaming," also influenced by the election and the spinning shock that followed, is driving, urgent power pop that draws from artists like Tom Petty and what Dan calls one of his "default languages" for writing music. The swirly, synth-heavy crescendo of "Artificial Life" takes on the struggle of artists and at-risk communities. The album carries a sense of uprising that is not unrelated to Wolf Parade's renewed determination to drive the band forward in uncertain times. Welcome to Cry Cry Cry.

    Boarding House Reach

BOARDING HOUSE REACH is the new solo album from Jack White, and is a testament to the breadth of the artist's creative power and his bold artistic ambition. This new material finds Jack White expanding his musical palate with perhaps his most ambitious work thus far, a collection of songs that are simultaneously timeless and modern. Written and conceived while holed up in a spartan apartment with literally no outside world distractions, White exclusively used the same kind of gear he had when he was 15 years old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer, and the most basic of instrumentation). The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain -- crunching rock 'n' roll, electro and hard funk, proto punk, hip hop, gospel blues, and even country -- all remapped and born anew to fit White's matchless vision and sense of restless experimentation.

BOARDING HOUSE REACH was produced by Jack White III and recorded at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN, Sear Sound in New York, NY, and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, CA. The album was mixed by Bill Skibbe, Joshua V. Smith, and White at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN. The album features White on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars and drums, organ, and synthesizers. He's backed by a remarkable new lineup of musicians that includes: drummer Louis Cato (BeyoncÉ, Q-Tip, John Legend, Mariah Carey), bassists Charlotte Kemp Muhl (The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger) and NeonPhoenix (Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Jay-Z), synthesizer players DJ Harrison and Anthony Brew Brewster (Fishbone, The Untouchables), keyboardists Neal Evans (Soulive, Talib Kweli, John Scofield) and Quincy McCrary (Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Pitbull), percussionists Bobby Allende (David Byrne, Marc Anthony) and Justin PorÉe (Ozomatli), and backing vocalists Esther Rose and Ann & Regina McCrary of Nashville's beloved gospel trio, The McCrary Sisters, as well as longtime collaborators like drummers Daru Jones (Nas, Talib Kweli) and Carla Azar (Autolux, Depeche Mode, Doyle Bramhall II). Singer-songwriter C.W. Stoneking also appears, contributing a stirring spoken word performance to the album's Abulia and Akrasia.

Jack White is a 12-time GRAMMY® Award-winner and 35-time nominee. His most recent full-length release, 2016's JACK WHITE ACOUSTIC RECORDINGS: 1998-2016 (Third Man Records/Columbia), collected 26 acoustic-based songs from throughout White's wide-ranging musical career, spanning album tracks, B-sides, remixes, alternate versions, and previously unreleased material from The White Stripes, The Raconteurs, and White's groundbreaking solo career. The collection debuted at #1 on Billboard's Vinyl Albums chart upon its September 2016 release - a position also achieved by 2012's RIAA gold certified solo debut, BLUNDERBUSS, and 2014's chart-topping LAZARETTO, both of which debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 as well.
