The Mono Singles '68 - '72Texas-bred singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Doug Sahm was one of the most important musicians ever to emerge from the Lone Star state, and an inspiration to multiple generations of roots-conscious rock 'n' rollers. Sahm did much of his most beloved work as leader of the seminal Sir Douglas Quintet, the audaciously eclectic band that first burst onto the national scene in 1965. With trusty sidekick Augie Meyers providing distinctive support on the Vox organ, the Quintet delivered an infectious, eclectic mix that encompassed Tex-Mex border pop, raw garage-rock, hipster honky-tonk, horn-driven R&B and more.
The Sir Douglas Quintet's most productive and influential period was its late-'60s/early-'70s stint with Mercury Records and its sister labels Smash and Philips. That period saw the SDQ relocate from Texas to San Francisco and record some of their most enduring and adventurous music. And that music never sounded better than on the mono mixes that graced the singles that the band released during that period, which are collected on this deluxe set.
The Mono Singles' 22 songs include the band's 1969 signature smash Mendocino, along with such Sahm standards as At the Crossroads, Dynamite Woman, Nuevo Laredo, Texas Me, And It Didn't Even Bring Me Down, Michoacan and his heartfelt rendition of Freddy Fender's Wasted Days, Wasted Nights, plus a selection of rare non-album B-sides. The collection also features Sahm's historic Nashville recording Be Real, which he released under the pseudonym Wayne Douglas in an attempt to break into the conservative mainstream country market.
This unique collection has been sourced from the original analog mono masters. The high-definition vinyl 2-LP set comes with extensive liner notes and lavish artwork.1. Are Inlaws Really Outlaws

Rat FarmDesert-rock legends Meat Puppets returns this spring with their 14th studio album - the 12-track Rat Farm, which Curt Kirkwood dubs "real blown-up folk music"
The album - the band's fourth since the return of Cris Kirkwood in 2007 - is due out April 16 on Megaforce Records. In addition to the Kirkwood brothers, the band now features drummer Shandon Sahm, son of Doug Sahm, as well as Curt's son Elmo Kirkwood on second guitar.
Of the new album, Curt Kirkwood says:
"I tried to write stuff that would stand on its own - just the chords and the melodies, and play it kind of straight. I think that was the guiding boundary that I gave myself. It was one of those things where a lot of times, in the past especially, Cris would go, 'Well, that's all there is? Let's put a prog rock part in the middle.' But I tried to hold it off as much as I could."1. Rat Farm

Doug Sahm And Band
Limited Edition Of 1000 Copies
Pressed On Gold Vinyl
Produced By Jerry Wexler & Arif Mardin
Doug Sahm's first solo record was something of a coming out party, a big budget affair that let the world know what the insiders already knew: that Doug Sahm was a quintessentially American musical visionary. After The Sir Douglas Quintet concluded its contract with Smash/Mercury, Jerry Wexler convinced Sahm to sign with Atlantic and brought him to New York for the sessions that were to become Doug Sahm and Band. To call the personnel that Wexler and co-producer Arif Mardin assembled for the album star-studded is a severe understatement: among the musicians on this 1972 release were Dr. John, David Fathead Newman, David Bromberg, and Flaco JimÉnez (the first in a series of collaborations with Doug); Sir Doug stalwarts Augie Meyers, Jack Barber, and George Rains; and, of course, Bob Dylan, who contributes a hitherto-unheard song (Wallflower).
It is a testament to Sahm's boundless talent that all of these stellar musicians wanted to play with him; it's even more of a testament that despite all of the formidable artists in the room, and despite the fact that Sahm only wrote three of the album's 12 tunes, Doug Sahm and Band never sounds like anything but a Doug Sahm record. And a hell of a good one, too, highlighted by the anthemic (Is Anybody Going to) San Antone and the brilliant Willie Nelson cover Me and Paul. This turned out to be Doug's only charting solo album, but he was never about the money. What mattered to Doug was the groove, and this record has it in every one of 'em. Real Gone Music is proud to present the first-ever vinyl reissue of this classic record, limited to 1000 gold vinyl copies. A must for your American music collection.1.
