    Night Beat

Clearly Sam Cooke's most intimate, most soulful and ultimately most real recording. This one has the feel of a private performance captured after hours when the audience had gone home and the singer was singing purely for the love of his songs. The performance put forth is simply straight from Cooke's soul. His selection of songs include spiritual, bluesy ballads and gospel classics. Cooke owns these songs, making each interpretation all his own. This is warm music that's easy to connect with. Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original three-track masters.

Sam Cooke is regarded as one of the handful of artists who single-handedly created the soul music genre. Having cut his teeth on the gospel circuit Sam eventually went solo and never looked back, scoring hit after hit with songs such as 'You Send Me' and 'Twistin The Night Away'. It's Too Late To Stop Now

Though he's released several fine live recordings over the course of his career, It's Too Late To Stop Now is the definitive live Van Morrison album. Van is backed here by a loose-but-funky, horn-driven band and the generous set list reaches as far back as his days with Them and continues up through his 1973 release Hard Nose Highway. Featured here are Van's wonderful re-interpretations of Muddy Waters (I Just Want To Make Love To You), Sonny Boy Williamson (Help Me) and Sam Cooke (Bring It On Home To Me) along with stunning versions of his classics Domino and Into The Mystic among others. An exceptional live document!

180-Gram LP Plated And Pressed At RTI

Housed In An Old-style Tip-on Jacket.

One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square is the second live album by the American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. The album was originally released in June 1985 in the United States by RCA Records. Initially recorded in 1963 to be released as a live album entitled One Night Stand, the concert at the Harlem Square club (in Miami's historically African American neighborhood of Overtown) was not released until 1985. RCA Victor, at the time, viewed the album as too gritty and raw and possibly damaging to his pop image, and quietly kept the recordings in their archive.

The album is generally considered among the best live albums by contemporary music critics, and has been ranked in best-of music lists, including on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

    But Beautiful (Pure Pleasure)

A highly successful and respected jazz and soul singer, Nancy Wilson bridges the gap between the classic pop vocal era of Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and the belting R&B divas of today. Though Nancy Wilson has always cited the emotionally naked, androgynous vocal style of Jimmy Scott as her primary influence, her voice carries definite echoes of Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan. Yet Wilson also has always had a strong feeling for post-Sam Cooke soul and the tartness of her delivery carries more than an echo of the sometimes-icy Lena Horne. Young and heart-stoppingly beautiful, Wilson was discovered singing in a N.Y.C. jazz club in the late 1950s by Cannonball Adderley, who told his management at Capitol Records that they needed to scoop her up before another label did. Wilson was immediately signed and started recording for Capitol, the premier vocal label of the 1950s and '60s.

    Musicians:

    • Nancy Wilson (vocal)

    • Hank Jones (piano)

    • Gino Bertachini (guitar)

    • Ron Carter (bass)

    • Grady Tate (drums)

Recording: November 1969 in New York City

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Howlin' Wolf is the third studio album from Chicago blues singer/guitarist/harmonica player Howlin' Wolf. It is a collection of six singles previously released by the Chess label from 1960 through 1962. Because of the illustration on its sleeve, the album is often called The Rockin' Chair Album, which was eventually adopted on subsequent pressings.

The album has had quite some influence on later musicians. In 1966, fellow Chess artist Koko Taylor recorded a cover version of "Wang Dang Doodle" which reached #4 on the Billboard's R&B Charts and became a minor crossover hit. Earlier in 1963 Sam Cooke released a single of "Little Red Rooster" making #7 on the R&B Singles chart and #11 on the Hot 100. In 1969 the songs "Shake for Me" and "Back Door Man" were used in the lyrics to the Led Zeppelin song "Whole Lotta Love".

    Aretha's Gold

Astonishing Collection of The Queen of Soul's Greatest Songs for Atlantic Records: Aretha's Gold Includes Nine Top Ten Hits: Respect, Chain of Fools, and Think Among Them

Mastered from the Original Master Tapes and Pressed at RTI: Breathtaking Sonics on Mobile Fidelity 180g 45RPM 2LP of Aretha's Gold Get to the Heart of Franklin's Range, Emotions, Expressiveness

Aretha Franklin made her Hall of Fame reputation at Atlantic Records between 1967-1968. This astonishing two-year period witnessed the singer score nine Top 10 hits and define soul music, a era chronicled on Aretha's Gold. Pairing with producer Jerry Wexler and a flawless Muscle Shoals studio band, Franklin unleashed bolder sides of her artistry kept under wraps during her tenure at Columbia. The rest is history - a history that, until now, has never been in heard in true audiophile sound. And if there's any voice you want to experience to the most realistic extent, it's that of the vocalist Rolling Stone crowned the Greatest Singer of All Time.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, Mobile Fidelity's 180g 45RPM 2LP of Aretha's Gold presents Franklin's most seminal early Atlantic songs with reference-standard sonics. Finally, hear the full range of the Queen of Soul's depth, reach, and expressiveness. Complementing her timeless classics with tremendous dynamics, restored balances, and stunning clarity, this collectible analog set sheds new light on Franklin's power and technique, honesty and confidence, enunciation and directness.

Hear why Franklin is even better than you likely think or remember. You just haven't been able to hear the Detroit native on a format that mirrors exactly what went down in the studios when she recorded songs that, to this day, remain the bar by which all other singers are measured. The same goes for Franklin's backing band, known as the Swampers, whose instrumental savvy, feel, and textures are so unique, the group is credited with creating its own style: The Muscle Shoals Sound. On this vinyl edition of Aretha's Gold, experience every picked guitar note, brushed snare, and fluid bass line. Seldom has a band and vocalist ever made a more formidable, memorable, and emotional combination.

The evidence plays out across these 14 songs, each a soul landmark, each unforgettable thanks to Franklin's impassioned performances and empowering attitude. The Sweet Impressions (Franklin's backing vocalists) and sweeping string arrangements bolster the foundation, but the material belongs to Franklin. A veritable hit parade, the track listing on Aretha's Gold reads like a dictionary of soul.

I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You), Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools, Since You've Been Gone (Sweet Sweet Baby), Think, The House That Jack Built, I Say a Little Prayer, Baby I Love You: All Top 10 hits. Plus five more tunes, including a riveting cover of Sam Cooke's You Send Me, that charted.

You know the songs by heart. You know the voice by memory. But you've never quite known them so intimately. Aretha's Gold on Mobile Fidelity gives the Queen the royal treatment she deserves.

    Face Your Fear

CURTIS HARDING could best be described as a student
of the gritty, sweat-dripping, hip-swinging blues that
wafted through the air of the American sixties. The offspring
of a mother who sang gospel, and a retired veteran,
he traveled all over the country as a child, singing
alongside his parents, learning that music was in fact the
great communicator, and that the key was not just in how
pretty the notes were, but how if you were honest in what
you were singing, you could stir a person on the inside.
This is what Otis Redding knew. What Sam Cooke, and
Bo Diddley, and B. B. King knew. That somehow there
was a way to take your experiences, your pain and joy,
and give them melody, cause them to live and breathe
and massage the hearts and minds of all those who hear.
That is what CURTIS HARDING does on his new album,
Face Your Fear. He figures out how to tap into the old
soul man of the past without mimicking or bastardizing
it, but instead evoking the spirit of the true Soul music of
yesterday, meshed with the realities of now. With a little
production help from his friends Sam Cohen and Danger
Mouse, CURTIS HARDING has put together a collection
of tunes that NME described as "soul-meets-garage pop
    perfection."

Al Green Gets Next To You (Pure Pleasure) (Awaiting Repress)

After the shaky start of Green Is Blues, Al Green and producer Willie Mitchell established their classic sound with Green's second album, Gets Next to You. The main difference is in the rhythm section. Abandoning the gritty syncopations of deep Southern soul, the Hi Rhythm Section plays it slow and seductive, working a sultry, steady pulse that Green exploits with his remarkable voice. Alternating between Sam Cooke's croon and Otis Redding's shout, Green develops his own distinctive style, and Gets Next To You only touches the surface of its depth. Although the album is filled with wonderful moments, few are as astonishing as Green and Mitchell's reinterpretation of the Temptations' I Can't Get Next to You, which turns the original inside out.

200-Gram 45 RPM Double LP Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings!

Tip-On Gatefold Jacket From Stoughton Printing

Otis Redding's third album presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding's version of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December.

Otis Redding Sings Soul is considered by many critics to be Redding's first great album. Recorded in April and July of 1965, it was released September 15th of that same year. The styles of Cooke and Redding couldn't have been more different; Cooke smooth and sure, Redding raw and pleading. But Redding's versions of Shake and A Change Is Gonna Come show how Cooke's sound and message helped shape Redding's Southern soul sound. Redding's singing reaches a new level of expressiveness with this as well as with covers of B.B. King's Rock Me Baby and the Motown hit My Girl.

This great album receives the full Analogue Productions reissue treatment here, starting with Kevin Gray's remaster from the original analogue tapes. Then we back that up with 200-gram plating and pressing on super-silent vinyl by our own Quality Record Pressings. Finally it's all housed in a tip-on gatefold jacket from Stoughton Printing. Deluxe all the way; you'll be estatic with the results!

    Sings Soul Ballads

Released in 1965, Otis Redding's second album Sings Soul Ballads features a ne choice of sweet and tender songs. Backed up by the STAX house band consisting of such soul greats as Booker T. Jones, Steve Cropper, Donald 'Duck' Dunn, and Al Jackson Jr., Redding delivers the goods with impressive style. His renditions of Sam Cooke's "Nothing Can Change This Love" and Chuck Willis' "It's Too Late" can be seen as improved versions of the originals. Biggest hit on the album proved to be "Mr. Pitiful", a nickname given to Redding by a local Memphis radio DJ.

    Pain In My Heart

    Import

This album works on so many different levels, that it's essential listening for at least three categories of buyer -- fans of Otis Redding and Stax Records (natch), and more general soul listeners, and also anyone serious about their devotion to the work of the Rolling Stones and any other British invasion bands that covered American soul. Pain In My Heart was practically a road map to Mick Jagger and any number of other would-be white soul shouters in the UK, not just on the title track but also numbers like the hard rocking Hey Hey Baby. For someone only 22 years old at the time of these sessions, and just two years past his first 45 rpm record, Redding exudes astonishing power, energy and boldness, though it's all packaged with greater restraint than his subsequent records did. This was the only LP that Redding recorded during the lifetime of his idol, Sam Cooke, and his version of You Send Me is the least stylized of any of his renditions of Cooke's songs -- later on, after Cooke's death, he would throw more of himself into it. The very fact that he was covering Cooke's soul classic shows an essential difference between Redding's and Cooke's early LPs; as Redding was on a soul label, no one tried to make him into a pop singer as that'd done at RCA with Cooke -- thus, he was running on all cylinders right out of the starting gate, though he wouldn't get really interesting or show his full depth until two albums later. But even covering Rufus Thomas's The Dog, Richard Berry's Louie Louie, Little Richard's Lucille, or Ben E. King's Stand By Me, he's already doing 70% of what we came to expect from Otis Redding in the years ahead -- his writing, apart from Security, These Arms Of Mine and That's What My Heart Needs, was still somewhat less than memorable, but this is still a first-rate debut.

    Mr. Soul (Discontinued)

Sam Cooke, inventor and true King of Soul, recorded 'Mr. Soul' in the same year as 'Night Beat', and seems to be its more adult counterpart, with soulful ballads taking up most of the album.

A laidback tempo and rich arrangements lay the foundation over which Sam's somewhat melancholy voice floats, creating an uplifting spirit that can mend anyone's broken heart. With standards such as 'Willow Weep For Me', 'I Wish You Love', and For Sentimental Reasons', Cooke shows a quiet emotive side of himself without losing his keen sense of melody, using the strength of his voice without overpowering the listener.

Had Sam Cooke lived longer, we might have had more music of this rare quality.

As it stands, we must make do with the treasures he left behind. And now, for the first time in over thirty years, Music On Vinyl is re-issuing 'Mr. Soul' on 180 grams audiophile vinyl with remastered audio.

    The Sides And In Between

The Sides And In Between is the new album from Atlanta band Gringo Star, their first for Nevado Records.

If you know a little about brothers Nick and Peter Furgiuele's roots, it all makes sense. Our grandad started out in radio in the 40s and 50s in Columbus, GA., Nick explains. He was a huge promoter of R&B back when it was still super segregated, and he was playing black music and putting on shows with Little Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers, a lot of Gospel shows. So we grew up hearing all these stories, listening to all this music. Our grandfather was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame posthumously. And my grandma all her photo albums are like Jackie Wilson shirtless backstage, hanging out. Not to mention how Nick and Peter used to raid their parents record collections, cutting their teeth on the likes of Buddy Holly, The Animals and The Kinks. Our favorite music comes from the 50s, Peter says, and that music influenced all the 60s bands we like.

The band has toured relentlessly across the U.S. and Europe building a diehard underground following while sharing bills with everyone from Cat Power and Feist to The Black Angels and Weezer, and also touring with Wavves, Best Coast, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead and fellow Atlantans The Black Lips.

    This World Is Not Enough

Since 2010, Elias Bender Rønnenfelt (Iceage, Vår) has used the Marching
Church moniker to a variety of musical ends, both live and recorded. However,
the project as it exists on This World Is Not Enough wasn't born until November
2013. With a live performance looming and no real idea what the set would be,
Rønnenfelt found a new vision for the band while daydreaming at a gig at the
venue where Marching Church was set to perform. "What I pictured was me in a
comfortable armchair, adorned in a golden robe, leading a band while a girl kept
pouring me champagne when I required it," Rønnenfelt explained. "This raised
the question, 'What sort of music would go along with this picture?'"

Rønnenfelt discovered the answer to that question with a lineup rounded out by
Kristian Emdal and Anton Rothstein of Lower, Cæcilie Trier (Choir of Young
Believers), Bo H. Hansen (Hand of Dust, Sexdrome) and Frederikke Hoffmeier
(Puce Mary). Under Rønnenfelt's leadership, the group composed some music,
rehearsed twice, and played their show. It was decided that night that this incarnation
of Marching Church would make a record.

This World Is Not Enough was influenced at first by obscure works like David
Maranha's experimental drone-rock saga Antarctica, and eventually by soul
bandleaders like James Brown and Sam Cooke. "The whole month of writing
and rehearsing and the one week we had in the studio was truly an explosion
of ideas," Rønnenfelt said. "Improvisation, something I have never worked with
before, was crucial in the making of this album, considering the loose nature
of the writing on some of these songs. The album works because of the band's
incredible ability of breathing life into these, at times, very simple ideas and
    experiments."

The eight tracks that made the final cut are, in Rønnenfelt's words, "songs of
nocturnal longing, preposterous self-obsession and cockeyed etiquette," and they
are an exemplary statement of the songwriter's extraordinary growth since the
    birth of Iceage.

    Diunna Greenleaf

Diunna Greenleaf and her band Blue Mercy returned to Blue Heaven Studios in 2009 for the 12th annual Blues Masters at the Crossroads and to make this D2D recording. She'd closed the 2006 Blues Masters and absolutely floored the Blue Heaven Studios congregation. So powerful and dynamic and soul-stirring was her performance that many concert regulars have commented that Greenleaf remains their favorite act through all the years. To say she was back in 2009 by popular demand is a wild understatement.

Greenleaf, of Houston, Texas, has a background steeped in both blues and gospel. She's been influenced by the likes of Koko Taylor, Aretha Franklin, Rosetta Tharpe, Sam Cooke and Charles Brown, and she includes intricate patches of jazz and soul in her performances.

Greenleaf came to the life of professional performing quite late, considering how much talent she has to offer. She worked as a school counselor and occasionally sang rather informally for children's and educational benefits. She and her band played a small show at a hospice in celebration of Houston blues legend Teddy Cry Cry Reynolds' birthday. Afterwards, Reynolds told Greenleaf of how he'd known her parents, both gospel musicians, and how she was not only very talented but also had a duty to continue the family legacy of performing. So insistent was Reynolds that he solicited the opinion of his old friend Katie Webster, the Swamp Boogie Queen. Webster confirmed Reynolds' assessment and encouraged Greenleaf to seriously pursue a life in music, even giving her newfound protÉgÉ rules for forming and leading a band.

In 2005, Greenleaf and Blue Mercy represented Houston in the International Blues Challenge, an annual contest in Memphis that features the world's best-unsigned blues bands. Greenleaf and Blue Mercy finished first out of 84 bands from 32 states and eight countries. What's more, Blue Mercy's guitarist, John Richardson, earned the Albert King award for Most Promising Guitarist. From there, the gigs came steadily, and the group's been booked solid ever since.

Greenleaf also served for three years as president of the Houston Blues Society, becoming the first woman elected to that post. As president, she produced the Willie Mae Thorton Blues Festival, bringing in such talent as Texas Johnny Brown, I.J. Gosey, Koko Taylor, Bernard Allison, Mel Waiters and others.

    Carney (200 Gram Vinyl)

Hit Maker And Musician's Musician Struck Chart Gold With 1972 Album Carney

Analogue Productions Reissue On 200-Gram Vinyl

Mastered By Kevin Gray At Cohearent Audio From The Original Master Tapes

Plated And Pressed At Quality Record Pressings

Heavyweight Tip-On Old-Style Jacket From Stoughton Printing

With his trademark top hat, hair well past his shoulders, a long, lush beard, an Oklahoma drawl and his fingers splashing two-fisted barrelhouse piano chords, future Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Leon Russell cut a flamboyant figure in the early 1970s. He recorded his first hit single Tight Rope with the release of his third, and most successful album Carney, in 1972, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 200.

Two years earlier Russell had already played on hundreds of songs as one of the top studio musicians in Los Angeles. The Oklahoma-born pianist, guitarist, songwriter and bandleader led Joe Cocker's band Mad Dogs & Englishmen, appeared at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh in New York City and composed numerous hits of his own. He was in Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Orchestra and played sessions for Frank Sinatra, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, the Ventures and the Monkees, among many others.

But it was the top-rated Carney, reissued here on an audibly exquisite 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions, that put Carney into the league of extraordinary musicians. Soulful roots-rock yields to dizzying psychedelia on this, Russell's most famous album. His all-time biggest hit, Tight Rope, leads to Out in the Woods, Cajun Love Song, This Masquerade, and more! No link in the reissue chain was sacrificed, making this outstanding reissue a true audiophile masterpiece. Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio remastered the album from the original master tapes; plating and pressing took place at Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs. Lastly, as benefits a stellar reissue, we packaged our version in a heavyweight old-style tip-on jacket from Stoughton Printing.

Russell wrote scores of hits for others, among them Superstar, (written with Bonnie Bramlett) for the Carpenters, Delta Lady for Joe Cocker and This Masquerade, for George Benson. His own version of This Masquerade is featured on Carney. More than 100 acts recorded A Song for You, which Russell said he wrote in 10 minutes. Ray Charles' recording of the song in 1993 received a Grammy Award.

Sadly, Russell's life as a musical muse and performer ended with his death at 74 on Nov. 13, 2016, at his home in Nashville. He will be forever remembered for making a broad, sophisticated palette of American music sound down-home and natural.

    The Shipwreck From The Shore

Anthony D'Amato releases his forthcoming album, 'The Shipwreck From The Shore," a riveting 10-track collection. The NYC-based songwriter is growing from his early homespun self-recorded solo acoustic work to a more ambitious, full-band sound. The album was recorded at The Great North Sound Society, an 18th Century farmhouse-turned-studio deep in the woods of Maine, and features Matt McCaughan of Bon Iver on drums, Brad Cook of Megafun on bass, and producer/keyboardist Sam Kassirer's (Josh Ritter, Lake Street Dive, Langhorne Slim) rich production. D'Amato's songs are self-mined, wailing tales of moving past life's dramas bolstered by waves of drums and guitars.
