    Getz/Gilberto is a 1964 jazz-bossa nova album by American saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto, featuring composer and pianist Antônio Carlos Jobim. Its release helped fuel the bossa nova craze in the United States and internationally, becoming the first Grammy Award-winning album from non-American artists. It brought together Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his LP Jazz Samba, João Gilberto (one of the creators of the style), and Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian composer (and also one of the main creators of the genre), who wrote most of the songs in the album. It became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, into an internationally celebrated musician.     The original master tapes for this title had not been used since 1980 previous to this reissue. Also, for this Analogue Productions reissue the decision was made to master and present this album as it was originally mixed to master tape. With very few exceptions all versions of this title to date, including the original, have had the channels incorrectly reversed. With this version, you'll hear this title as it was intended to be heard, without the channels reversed. And again, those reissues you've heard up until now - definitely still breathy, warm and rich - were made from something less than the master. Prepare to hear the veil removed.


    Astrud Gilberto says that her husband, Joao, informed Stan Getz that she could sing at the recording. Creed Taylor recalls that it took Getz's wife, Monica, to get both Astrud and Joao into the recording studio; Mrs. Getz had a sense that Astrud could make a hit. And Getz himself is on record saying that he insisted on Astrud's presence over the others' objections. So who's right? What does it matter? The Gilbertos, Getz and the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim followed up the bossa nova success of Jazz Samba with this, the defining LP of the genre. With one of the greatest hit singles jazz has ever known - each one who hears it goes Ahhh!

    Partly because of its Brazilian collaborators and partly because of The Girl From Ipanema, Getz/Gilberto is nearly always acknowledged as the Stan Getz bossa nova LP. But Jazz Samba is just as crucial and groundbreaking; after all, it came first, and in fact was the first full-fledged bossa nova album ever recorded by American jazz musicians. And it was just as commercially successful, topping the LP charts and producing its own pop chart hit single in Desafinado. It was the true beginning of the bossa nova craze, and introduced several standards of the genre (including Ary Barroso's Bahia and Antonio Carlos Jobim's Desafinado and Samba de Uma Nota Só [aka One Note Samba]). But above all, Jazz Samba stands on its own artistic merit as a shimmering, graceful collection that's as subtly advanced -- in harmony and rhythm -- as it is beautiful. Getz and his co-billed partner, guitarist Charlie Byrd -- who was actually responsible for bringing bossa nova records to the U.S. and introducing Getz to the style -- have the perfect touch for bossa nova's delicate, airy texture. For his part, Byrd was one of the first American musicians to master bossa nova's difficult, bubbling syncopations, and his solos are light and lilting. Meanwhile, Getz's playing is superb, simultaneously offering a warm, full tone and a cool control of dynamics; plus, Byrd's gently off-kilter harmonies seem to stimulate Getz's melodic inventiveness even more than usual. But beyond technique, Getz intuitively understands the romanticism and the undercurrent of melancholy inherent in the music, and that's what really made Jazz Samba such a revelatory classic. Absolutely essential for any jazz collection.

    To a great many people, the name of Charlie Byrd and the updated samba beat known as bossa nova will always be intertwined. The guitarist did play a most important role in the introduction into this country of the compelling Brazilian rhythm-first on that major hit with Stan Getz and then on his own Bossa Nova Pelos Passaros. But before, during, and after the craze, Byrd was capable of much more-a remarkable impoviser and a richly versatile in-person performer. This 1963 live session at a celebrated New York club, the Village Gate, offers a little South American flavor and a lot of other jazz elements, including the guest appearance of trumpet great Clark Terry.

    Working on Studio Rio Presents: The Brazil Connection project, the Berman Brothers sought out the original multi-track masters and utilized an all-new, state-of-the-art separation technology from Science of Sounds to extract exquisitely pristine and detailed vocals. The newly isolated vocals were then melded with brand-new, authentic backing arrangements played by Studio Rio, an all-star cast of Brazilian musical pioneers from the bossa nova and samba genres, including Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Roberto Menescal and Brazilian musical legend Marcos Valle.

    This is the newest project, born in Rio De Janeiro. Ersahin has already presented the Brazilian version of his Nublu Jazz Festival, and this disc probably reflects the urban electronica advances of São Paulo in equal measure. There are supremely individual vocals from Nina Becker, Thalma de Freitas, China and Junio Barreto. Also involved are Kenny Wollesen and Alberto Continentino on the rhythm sections, and the massively influential (and innovative) producer/instrumentalist Kassin and guitarists Catatau and Muzak. As if this wasn't sufficiently impressive, there are the rappers Rodrigo and Lourdes de Luz from Mamelo Soundsystem. Acidic guitars contrast with dreamy vocals and tumbling drums. This is an organic funk with resonant basslines, harmonised saxophone and skittering drums. It's a swirling brew of vocals, vibes and stinging guitar parts. The sound of an experimenting Brazil that remains in touch with its pop, rock, bossa and samba roots.

    Given Vince Guaraldi's affinity for Brazilian music, this pairing with Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete from the early '60s seems like a natural. On From All Sides, fans of the Peanuts TV specials will recognize Guaraldi's trademark pianistic style, with Menino Pequeno da Bateria being essentially the same tune used as My Little Drum on A Charlie Brown Christmas. The melody of Ginza Samba will also be familiar to the Charlie Brown TV audience. Sete contributes a pair of originals, with Mambeando being especially enjoyable. The group offers a tasty reading of The Girl from Ipanema, and places A Taste of Honey into an interesting Latin groove. The interaction between the two principals here is generally quite good, though Sete's solo appears to be out of kilter rhythmically with Guaraldi's trio on Menino Pequeno. That minor complaint aside, this is an enjoyable, easygoing outing.

    Arguably one of the most groundbreaking and influential bands in the metal realm, ATHEIST combined a death metal attack with virtuosic level of playing.     In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable
    selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer
    Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco's Black Hawk
    in between recording sessions). Guaraldi's spry Ginza Samba kicks thing off with nimble and imaginative statements by all the soloists. Tjader's
    swinging originals Crow's Nest and Big Bear provide prime solo vehicles as well, while his lovely waltz number Liz-Anne adds some nice contrast to
    the set, eliciting one of Getz's best solos in the process. The group rounds things out with fine ballad readings of I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face
    and For All We Know.

    Although the name Stan Getz (tenor sax) was initially synonymous with the West Coast cool scene during the mid-to-late 1950s, he likewise became a key component in the Bossa Nova craze of the early 1960s. Getz Au Go Go (1965) is Stan Getz in his prime, recorded with perhaps one of the best quartets of his career, featuring Bossa Nova singer Astrud Gilberto.


    The album was recorded in 1964 during two concerts in the venerable Greenwich Village venue, the CafÉ Au Go Go, two months after Astrud Gilberto's Girl From Ipanema became a Top Five pop single. However, the focus of Getz Au Go Go steers away from the Brazilian flavored fare, bringing Gilberto into the realm of a decidedly more North American style.


    That said, there are a few Antonio Carlos Jobim compositions -- Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars) and One Note Samba -- both of which would be considered as jazz standards in years to follow. The album boasts wonderful versions of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein's It Might as Well Be Spring, and the scintillating instrumental Summertime, from Porgy & Bess.


    The band features a young Gary Burton (vibraphone), Kenny Burrell (guitar), Gene Cherico (bass), and Joe Hunt (drums).     Around the year 1970, almost everything appeared to have been said about the style of music over the past two decades, which was a mix of samba and cool jazz. Adventurous musicians such as Luis Bonfa, Baden Powell, Charly Byrd, João and Astrud Gilberto, and the saxophonist Stan Getz lent fire and sentiment to the "new trend". First and foremost among them was Carlos Antonio Jobim, whose catchy tunes such as the ticking, shuffling song Desafinado and the genial One Note Samba were heard all over the globe.
    That the man from Ipanema still had a lot to say is proved by the present album, which presents Jobim's creativity at the height of his maturity. Right from the very first number, where Urbie Green on the trombone 'sings' Tereza My Love so purely in the top register, it is clear that the late bossa with its typical rhythm is structurally far more refined than the early hot dance numbers. The melodies are woven through, as it were, with shining gold and silver threads of rhythm, and clusters of sound are light and airy. However, here and there, the musicians let their hair down, such as in the Latin classic Brazil.



    With that magician of sound Deodato as arranger and conductor, and Rudy van Gelder as recording engineer, this LP is certainly a Bossa masterpiece. There's no more to be said!

    Slaves Mass (Pure Pleasure)

    Not strictly a jazz album in the strict sense, Slaves Mass has strong compositional themes among its seven tracks. The maestro Hermeto Pascoal plays everything from flutes, soprano saxophone, guitar, Fender Rhodes, acoustic piano and clavinet on this set, and enlists help from Ron Carter, Airto, Flora Purim, Raul DeSouza, David Maro and others. Mixing Pot, is the opener and an anomaly in that it is a vanguard fusion tune where Pascoal really digs in and improvises. It also features the only appearance on this set of Alphonso Johnson on electric bass. In Missa Dos Escravos, the title track, Pascoal's emblematic pig gives his first growls in a song dominated by Brazilian Indian references. Wonderfully and intricately composed, it centers around folk tropes. Chorinho Para Ele is a beautiful and modern choro with a somewhat challenging glissando bridge that really proposed new directions for the traditional genre. Aquela Valsa is a beautiful six/eight theme that turns into a samba with a beautiful trombone solo by DeSouza. Cannon is an utterly improvisational piece that meanders and winds around Pascoal's flute solo. Atonalism dominates the piano solo in Escuta Meu Piano, which also presents bits and pieces of different styles (like baio) and folk songs. Hot samba improvisation is found in GelÉia de Cereja, that slips and slides through a variety of schema and dynamic changes without much internal focus, but it is a compelling bit of creative anarchy nonetheless in that it displays Pascoal's full range of restless musical and textural impulses -- as well as a beautiful soprano solo.

    Stan had chosen the Cafe Au Go Go for this occasion because of its fine acoustics and its intimacy. Atmosphere was paramount to the first New York presentation of the New Stan Getz Quartet and Astrud Gilberto because of the soft, easy quality of their music. Astrud had already won acclaim for her work with Getz in the album Getz/Gilberto (V/V 6-8548), which also stars Astrud's husband Joao Gilberto as well, and this threesome's single from the album The Girl From Ipanema was rapidly rising on the best-selling charts.

    Respighi - Birds - Brazilian Impressions (Speakers Corner)

    It was Respighis fascination with ancient dances and songs that inspired him to write his bird suite. His great love for such music makes itself felt in every single movement of this work. While Respighi imbued each of the bird portraits with his very own sound colouring typical of his time, there is an original masterpiece by a Renaissance or Baroque composer lurking in the background.



    The marchlike 'Intrada', based on a piece by Bernardo Pasquini (1637-1710), is further refined by a gradual building-up of the instrumental apparatus and comes to a final climax full of pomp and glory in which the brass are given prominence.



    Ornithological elements are easily identified in the movements which follow: the doves cooing and billing is are underlined by a sighing, rhythmic base; the hen is heard clucking with a characteristic motif, and the song of the nightingale is brought to us by the flute over a mysterious murmuring on the low strings. The cuckoo is then heard, followed by a repeat of the initial theme, thus bringing to perfect completion 'Gli Ucelli' ('The Birds'), a colourful bird show which knows no rival in modern music.



    The 'Impressioni brasiliano' ('Brazilian Impressions') is also a seldom heard jewel in both the concert hall and on record. Although the three-movement work has a subtle rhythm which runs throughout the work, it is far removed from the well-known 'Europeanised' samba adaptations which are so often heard. The suite is remarkable for its tender, impressionistic colouring which demands to be heard time and time again.

    The film director Blake Edwards brought into existence what is probably the best opening sequence to his comic crime film when he commissioned a young enterprising company to produce an animated Pink Panther cartoon film. The creative team came up with the idea of giving the cold, glittering diamond the guise of a cool, pink panther, which leads a bungling detective on a merry dance to the slinky sound of the Panther theme.



    Mancini would not be Mancini if he did not bathe the film location - the skiing resort Cortina d'Ampezzo -in highly varied musical colours and genres. His well-known love for dance music finds itself in the samba (It Had Better Be Tonight), the shuffle (Champagne And Quail), and the cha-cha (Something For Sellers). But also the ballad, sung by a muted trumpet and saxophone (Royal Blue), or the simple combination of keyboard and strings (Piano And Strings) are all woven into the story. One of the most memorable and delightful sounds is that of the accordion, whose melodies evoke an atmosphere that is filled with the Bohème, Paris and the sound of the musette. This music is never gaudy, but subtle, just like a panther padding quietly along. And if your appetite is now whetted for more, there is an extra portion of Mancini to be found in Breakfast At Tiffany's (RCA LSP 2362).

    Many of Santana's rock-addict fans could well have understood the inviting word Welcome on the white LP cover as an attempt to break away from the spiritual aura of his previous album Love Devotion Surrender. And the musicians certainly managed to produce a rich Latin feeling, with such titles as Samba De Sausalito and Yours Is The Light. But luckily their concessions did not alienate them from their die-hard fans in that they came up with a sort of copy of the rhythmical Caravanserai. They truly attempted something new. Encouraged by the success of the jazz-fusion formula created by Miles Davis and his disciples, Santana combined his virtuoso guitar playing with specially chosen electronic features. The amazingly acrobatic jazz vocalists Leon Thomas and Wendy Haas contributed complicated, quirky parts and the maestro himself vies with John McLaughlin in a dense conflict carried out on their instruments in Flame Sky. This is an album with a strong intellectual drive and offers the discerning listener a dazzling blend of Latin, jazz and fusion.

    For their first three smash albums, Carlos Santana
    would take the band to the top of all the popular music charts
    as these sessions would yield a plethora of hit singles. Their
    performances were of legendary proportion, culminating with a
    1969 Woodstock performance which made them one of the most

    On July 3rd and 4th, 1973, Carlos Santana and The Santana Band played two very incredible
    shows for thousands of their delighted fans in Osaka, Japan. Cleverly capturing this
    historic event for a soon to be released live album Lotus , the executives at Sony Music Japan,
    known for their masterful audiophile skills, ran tape and the rest is now classic rock history.


    Initially released in Japan , the monumental 3 LP set Lotus would become one of the most
    celebrated live albums of the band's career. With the extensive two hour performance of nonstop
    hits and deep album track masterpieces, Lotus was also known for its extensive tri-fold LP
    cover and beautifully detailed artwork elements all the way down to each personalized record
    label. This album would soon become one of the most expensive imported albums at the time,
    as collectors and Santana fans in the states would pay serious dollars to get this incredible
    concert extravaganza.


    Featuring a cross section of Santana hits like Black Magic Woman , Oye Como Va,
    Waiting, and Every Step Of The Way, plus the exotic rhythms and jams on workouts like
    Batuka , Mantra and the beautifully orchestrated instrumental Samba Pa Ti, Carlos Santana's
    guitar was explosive as ever as witnessed by the cheers and shouts from the jubilant audience.


    The original vinyl version of this masterpiece has been out of circulation for decades
