    Lanzafame

Sir Thomas Sanders and his one-man act Tap Tap deliver a gloriously messy, ebullient, shiny pop album here filled with joyfully noisy guitars, crashy drums and lovely harmonies. The songs feel like they are held together just by the skin of their teeth as if they could fall apart or maybe just explode around every corner. Lanzafame is just about everything it needs to be; quick, enjoyable and a fine twist on the continuing late-'70s/early-'80s revival.

A classic of the original NYC freak-folk scene!

The Fugs were the original outsider artists, releasing their first recordings on the legendary avant-garde label ESP-Disk' in the mid 1960s before signing to Reprise. Formed around the core of Ed Sanders and Tuli Kupferberg, The Fugs combined jug band music, smutty rock'n'roll, country ballads, Gregorian chants, canticles, and bohemian poetry into a stoned stew of anti-establishment freakouts! Now their first two albums for Reprise are available on vinyl for the first time since their original 1967-68 release.

The Rangers - made up of guitarist Woody Platt, banjo player Graham Sharp, bassist Charles R. Humphrey III, mandolin player Mike Guggino, fiddle player Nicky Sanders and Mike Ashworth on the box kit - are working with Jerry Douglas as their producer on the project. Despite being well known as a bluegrass group, the band has also made an effort to being other genres into the mix on the new record.

Radio travels the dial from top to bottom, Sharp says. The album tunes into the rock channel for a little while, then the blues, then country, pop and, of course, bluegrass.

Conrad Rook had asked Ornette Coleman to compose the music for his film Chappaqua. In june '65 David Izenzohn, Charles Moffet, tenor saxophonist Pharoah Sanders and several other musicians started recording the album.

Conrad Rook eventually decided to go for a different score for his film, as he found it was so beautiful that he feared it would overpower the imagery and action of the film.

Since its original release by Columbia in 1965, Chappaqua Suite has been out of print most of the time or available in small quantities, until now

    Sun Ship

Sun Ship is a jazz album recorded on August 26, 1965, by tenor saxophonist John Coltrane. The album extended the free jazz ideas of Transition. The relaxed, serene feel of earlier ballads like "Welcome" was transformed into a new style of ballad on "Dearly Beloved" and "Attaining". This style involved very slow tempos, drum rolls and fills, and a louder, more intense feel than traditional jazz ballads. Like "Psalm" (from A Love Supreme), there is no real tune, just a scale or series of tones used to build an improvised theme.

Coltrane's solos on the other tracks are also more extreme than on his earlier albums, and are reminiscent of the style of Albert Ayler and Pharaoh Sanders in their extensive use of altissimo and multiphonics. The title "Sun Ship" may have been inspired by Sun Ra's conception of free jazz as having an affinity with science fiction conceptions of human existence.

Sun Ship was one of the only albums John Coltrane's quartet recorded without sound engineer Rudy Van Gelder. It was also one of the last albums (with First Meditations, recorded a week later) which John Coltrane recorded before he began experimenting with larger groups. Tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders was playing regularly with the band by September, 1965, and both McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones left the band in January, 1966.

Live At The Village Vanguard Again!

Live At The Village Vanguard Again! is a jazz album by saxophonist John Coltrane. Recorded in May 1966, the album shows Coltrane playing in the free jazz style that characterized his final recordings.

Out of all the recordings made during the session, only three pieces remain: Naima, originally from the album Giant Steps, My Favorite Things, from the album of the same name, and a bass solo by Jimmy Garrison entitled, Introduction to My Favorite Things. The line up consists of the augmented quartet of the time, featuring Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass and Rashied Ali on drums. Additionally, Pharoah Sanders contributes on flute and tenor saxophone, while Emanuel Rahim plays percussion.

    Songversation

Back with Motown, India.Arie is rejuvenated for her fifth album, which follows a lengthy hiatus. Largely a low-key, gently uplifting affair with a soft, warm glow, 11 of its 16 tracks are enhanced with assistance from several Turkish musicians -- including percussionists, horn players, an oudist, and the Istanbul Strings -- who were recorded at the studio of Sezen Aksu (one of the guests on Testimony, Vol. 2). Longtime co-producer and instrumentalist Shannon Sanders remains, while new associate David Ryan Harris (Dionne Farris, John Mayer) is another major factor.

The album's upbeat tone is set with the driving Just Do You, a career highlight boasting a chorus that recalls the pre-chorus of Michael Jackson's Rock with You. Sweet, sighing, relaxed numbers like Flowers (You're the moral compass directing me to light) and Cocoa Butter (You are like cocoa butter on my heart) are among the most India.Arie-like songs laid down. Everything -- most exemplified by Break the Shell, inspired by an encounter with Cicely Tyson -- transmits positivity, even when she admits that, as a woman almost four decades in with neither a lifelong partner nor children, she's unsure of her position in life. It's evident that Arie's in a good place, both creatively and personally, yet SongVersation is not about self-satisfaction. She has no trouble bringing her listeners along.

    Black Fire! New Spirit!

Soul Jazz Records' new release Black Fire! New Spirits! Explores deep, radical and spiritual jazz in the USA in the period between 1957-75. In the 1960s and into the 1970s, jazz music in the USA was in an almost constant state of revolution, with the music and lives of African-American artists radicalised by the advent of the civil rights movement, Black Power, and a new spiritual awakening. For over 20 years now Soul Jazz Records have been exploring this rich area of deep and spiritual jazz music with an array of albums such as Freedom, Rhythm and Sound, Universal Sounds of America, New Thing, Soul Jazz Love Strata East and more. Soul Jazz Records have also released a steady stream of reissues of lost and classic deep jazz releases over the years from artists such as Art Ensemble of Chicago, Steve Reid, Pharaoh Sanders and others. This new album features groundbreaking and revolutionary artists such as Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, The Last Poets and Yusef Lateef as well as many rare and deep lost tracks from lesser known artists such as Creative Artists Ensemble, Granchan Moncur, Lloyd McNeill, Tyrone Washington and others.

Offering: Live At Temple University documents a legendary concert by John Coltrane at Temple University in his hometown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
on November 11, 1966, six weeks after his fortieth birthday and nine months before his untimely death. Offering incorporates a look that is contiguous with the graphic identity of Impulse! Records, Coltrane's exclusive label from 1961
until the end of his life. This is the first officially sanctioned release of an undiscovered, complete Coltrane performance since 2005. It captures Coltrane in
exemplary form, navigating the language he had developed during the last phase of his musical path with passion and pellucid logic. Operating at
equivalent levels of invention and energy are three members of his working quintet of one year's standing his wife, Alice Coltrane, on piano; Pharoah
Sanders on reeds and flute; and Rashied Ali on drums.

Offering is emblematic of the efflorescent energies and radical ideas that Coltrane himself had much to do with bringing forth during the seven years after
1960, when he left the employ of Miles Davis to pursue his vision as a leader. There are versions of Coltrane's 1960 hits "Naima" and "My Favorite
Things," a transformational reworking of the 1964 ballad "Crescent," a spirit-raising rendering of "Leo," which he had recorded on several previous
occasions during 1966, and the hymnal "Offering," which he would record on a February 15, 1967 studio session that Impulse! would release during the
    '90s as Spiritual Offering.

On Offering, Resonance Records achieves the highest possible audio quality, using direct transfers of original master reels from a location recording by
Temple's WRTI-FM, remastered at 96kHz/24 bit, that were tracked down by Coltrane scholar Yasuhiro Fujioka.
The immense life-force that animates the proceedings on this November 1966 evening in Philadelphia belies the declining state of Coltrane's health. It is
still difficult to grasp and to accept that he was firmly in the grip of the liver cancer that would still his voice on July 17, 1967. As co-producer Ashley Kahn
states in his liner notes, "Coltrane was pointing the way forward for generations of players to come, pushing the music to exhilarating, spiritual heights that
caught most by surprise. In 1966, that wasn't what jazz performances were about not yet."

    City Of Heroes

Frontiers Music Srl has announced the release of the anticipated new album from Kiske / Somerville, entitled City Of Heroes.

Kiske / Somerville is the musical collaboration between vocalists Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic, Place Vendome) and Amanda Somerville (Trillium, Avantasia) and this new recording is certainly going to be one of the highlights of the season in rock music. Kiske's soaring overtones seem to blend perfectly with the ethereal quality and diverse range of Amanda's voice and this time the results are truly over the top.

This brilliant new album sees Mat Sinner (Primal Fear, Sinner) and Magnus Karlsson (Starbreaker, Primal Fear) handling most of the songwriting (with a song contribution "Breaking Neptune" from Sander Gommans formerly of After Forever and Amanda Somerville herself) and with Sinner overseeing the production in various recording studios in Europe. Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Amaranthe, Primal Fear, Pretty Maids, Doro etc.) then took care of the mix of the album ensuring a sonic quality second to none.

    So It Is

Preservation Hall Jazz Band have announced the release of their new album, So It Is, the septet's second release featuring all-new original music, releasing via Legacy Recordings. So It Is finds the classic PHJB sound invigorated by a number of fresh influences, not least among them the band's 2015 life-changing trip to Cuba.

In Cuba, all of a sudden we were face to face with our musical counterparts, says bandleader/composer/bassist Ben Jaffe. There's been a connection between Cuba and New Orleans since day one - we're family. A gigantic light bulb went off and we realized that New Orleans music is not just a thing by itself; it's part of something much bigger. It was almost like having a religious epiphany.

Producer David Sitek, a founder of art rock innovators TV on the Radio who has helmed projects by Kelis, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Santigold among others, offered both a keen modern perspective and a profound respect for the band's storied history. Upon arriving in New Orleans to meet with the band, Sitek recalls he and Jaffe accidentally stumbling into one of the city's famed second-line parades. I was struck by the visceral energy of the live music all around, this spontaneous joy, everything so immediate, he says. I knew I had to make sure that feeling came out of the studio. It needed to be alive. It needed to sound dangerous.

The music on So It Is, penned largely by Jaffe and 84 year-old saxophonist Charlie Gabriel in collaboration with the entire PHJB, stirs together that variety of influences like classic New Orleans cuisine. Longtime members Jaffe, Gabriel, Clint Maedgen and Ronell Johnson have been joined over the past 18 months by Walter Harris, Branden Lewis and Kyle Roussel, and the new blood has hastened the journey into new musical territory. Inspired by that journey and reinvigorated by the post-Katrina rebuilding of their beloved home city, PHJB are redefining what New Orleans music means in 2017 by tapping into a sonic continuum that stretches back to the city's Afro-Cuban roots, through its common ancestry with the Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Fire Music of Pharoah Sanders and John Coltrane, and forward to cutting-edge artists with whom the PHJB have shared festival stages from Coachella to Newport, including legends like Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead and modern giants like My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire and the Black Keys.

    Such Sweet Thunder (Pure Pleasure)

This music counts among Ellington's most well-realized 'concept projects', all inspired by Shakespeare's work and filled with memorable melodies and ample opportunities for solos by Cat Anderson, Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, and Quentin Jackson. The Ellington-Strayhorn compositions treat their soloists like actors doing scenes and, in effect, playing parts, even quoting lines after a fashion - Clark Terry 'plays' Puck in Up and Down, Up and Down (I Will Lead Them Up and Down), and Johnny Hodges turns in one of the most sensuous performances of his career for Half the Fun, from Antony and Cleopatra.

    Musicians:

    • Duke Ellington (piano)

    • Johnny Hodges

    • Russell Procope (saxophone)

    • John Sanders (trombone)

    • Britt Woodman (trombone)

    • Ray Nance (trumpet)

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

Natural Light by Eric Bibb is as strong as his previous efforts and produced once again by his longtime bassist Dave Bronze. Eric's voice and guitar playing shines all over whether he's doing a solo acoustic number as in Champagne Habits and the beautiful Lucky Man' Rag where he is joined by a wasboard player, or in the full band numbers such as the cover of the sixties Jackie Wilson hit Higher And Higher. Other favourites include the jazzy Home Lovin' Man where Janne Petersson's piano really stands out, the gospel of Right On Time and Tell Riley, a song about Bukka White and his cousin Riley B.(B.) King. There's even a guest appearence by Hubert Sumlin, the late Howlin Wolf's guitarist, who plays a solo on Too Much Stuff. Most of the songs are self-penned by Eric Bibb with wise storytelling and witty lyrics but there are some covers tastefully arranged including Randy Newman' ballad Every Time It Rains.

    Musicians:

    • Eric Bibb (vocal, guitar)

    • Janne Petersson (piano, organ, accordian)

    • Dave Bronze (bass)

    • Hubert Sumlin, Steve Donnelly (guitar)

    Ascension

Trane is joined by Pharoah Sanders, Freddie Hubbard and four other horn players for an explosion of fiery solos and free improvisation on this famous 1965 session. Recorded with three tenors (Trane, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp), two altos (Marion Brown, John Tchicai), two trumpet players (Freddie Hubbard, Dewey Johnson), two bassists (Art Davis, Jimmy Garrison), the lone McCoy Tyner on piano, and Elvin Jones on the drums, this large group is both relentless and soulful simultaneously.

    The Hunter

The Hunter, the follow-up to Mastodon's critically embraced 2009 album, Crack The Skye, was recorded in the band's hometown of Atlanta, GA as well as in Los Angeles with producer Mike Elizondo. As with all of their albums, Mastodon (bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds, guitarist Bill Keliher, and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor), decided to take a completely different tack and musical approach on their newest venture, but as usual the band does so boldly and with reckless abandon.

Yusef Lateef: Live at Ronnie Scott's

    Live at Ronnie Scott's January 15th 1966

This is a previously unreleased live club performance from Yusef Lateef, the brilliant multi-instrumentalist whose mixing of jazz and Eastern music was a great influence on some of the finest musicians of the era including John Coltrane and Pharaoh Sanders.

Accompanied at Ronnie Scott's by the house band of pianist Stan Tracey, double bassist Rick Laird and drummer Bill Eyden, most of the repertoire played comes from Lateef's earlier recordings for Savoy and Prestige such as Jazz Moods and Eastern Sounds. Lateef plays flute on The Dreamer and Last Night Blues (it was the last night of the run). He plays the shenai - a kind of oboe - on Blues from The Orient, the xun - a Chinese flute - on Song of Delilah, and tenor saxophone on Yusef's Mood.

The evening's performance was recorded by Les Tomkins at the request of Ronnie Scott. The musicians were unaware they were being recorded as Scott believed they would be at their best and most unselfconscious this way. This record was mastered at Gearbox Records directly from the original 1/4" tapes.

Cut on Haeco Scully lathe with Westrex RA1700 series amps, Westrex 3DIIA cutting head and Telefunken U73B tube limiter; Maselec master control and equalisation.

    Emperor Of Sand

Emperor Of Sand finds Mastodon returning to a deeply imaginative and complex conceptual storyline that ponders the nature of time. Threading together the myth of a man sentenced to death in a majestically malevolent desert, the band conjures the grains of a musical and lyrical odyssey slipping quickly through a cosmic hourglass. Emperor of Sand is like the grim reaper, says drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor. Sand represents time. If you or anyone you know has ever received a terminal diagnosis, the first thought is about time. Invariably, you ask, 'How much time is left?'

We're reflecting on mortality, adds bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders. To that end, the album ties into our entire discography. It's 17 years in the making, but it's also a direct reaction to the last two years. We tend to draw inspiration from very real things in our lives.

Emperor Of Sand was recorded at The Quarry Recording Studio in Kennesaw, just outside Mastodon's hometown of Atlanta, with producer Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, Neil Young, AC/DC, Rage Against The Machine), who first worked with Mastodon on their seminal 2009 album Crack The Skye.

    The Native

An alt-country band with punk roots, Vandoliers formed in 2015, bringing together a group of Dallas-Fort Worth musicians who'd already logged more than a decade in their own punk and folk bands. Together, the guys make a different sound, mixing raw, rough-edged roots music with the focused, fiery storytelling of frontman Joshua Fleming.

We wanted to approach country music from a rock perspective, says Fleming, who filled the band's 2016 debut, Ameri-Kinda, with anthems about hitting the highway, draining beer bottles, rallying against your opponents and, occasionally, dropping acid. Behind him, the guys kick up plenty of fast-moving dust, filling the songs with train beats, gang vocals, blasts of brass and bursts of guitar.

The band takes things up a notch further on its sophomore record, The Native. Rounded out by bassist Mark Moncrieff, drummer Guyton Sanders, fiddler Travis Curry, electric guitarist Dustin Fleming and multi-instrumentalist Cory Graves, Vandoliers pay tribute to Texas by putting their own spin on the state's musical history. The Native is exactly what its title suggests: a tour of the many subgenres that originated in the Lone Star State, from outlaw country to Texas swing, electric blues, and even Tejano. At the same time, it's a twist on those familiar sounds, delivered with a wink of the eye and a bang of the head. It's twang and tattoos, grit and guitars, honky-tonk and horns, Tejano and Telecasters. It's Vandoliers.
