    Vinyl LP repressing of this classic 1969 album by the British Folk legends. LIEGE & LIEF was the fourth album by Fairport Convention. It was the third and final album the group released in the UK in 1969, all of which prominently feature Sandy Denny as lead female vocalist. Although Denny quit the band even before the album's release, Fairport Convention has continued to the present day to make music almost exclusively within the traditional British Folk idiom, and are still one of the artists most strongly associated with it.

    In 1969, the High Priestess Of Soul, Nina Simone, descended onto the stage of the Philharmonic Hall in New York to record her new live-album, Black Gold.


    It became a legendary performance, with the first recording of the Civil Rights song 'To Be Young, Gifted And Black',
    a song which is not addressed to white people primarily. Though it doesn't put you down in any way...it simply ignores you. For my people need all the inspiration and love that they can get.


    Black Gold also contains a rendition of Sandy Denny's 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes,' in a minimalist arrangement that ends in an uplifting orchestration true to both the writer of the song and the performer. Throughout the entire performance Ms Simone keeps a regal, aloof and sometimes goofy composure, her monologues in between songs ushering the listener a little closer to her moving performance.


    Her eclectic style takes us past a number of different music forms; past Soul and Gospel and Folk, Jazz and Broadway; her androgynous and distinctive timbre floats somewhere between melancholy and bliss, and yet we always feel that Ms Simone is taking us exactly where she wants us to go.


    Overall, Black Gold is a poignant and touching album from the peak of her performing and recording period that should not be overlooked.

    "I met Sandy Denny at the Troubadour in Earl's Court in late 1966," Strawbs vocalist, guitarist, and banjoist David Cousins said. "I dropped in late one night to hear an angel singing. Sandy was sitting on a stool, wearing a white dress, a straw hat, and playing a Gibson Hummingbird guitar. When she came off stage, I introduced myself and asked if she fancied joining a group. 'Who are you?' she said. 'Strawbs,' I replied. 'OK,' she said. I went to the pay phone and called Tony Hooper to tell him we had a girl singer."


    Sandy Denny & the Strawbs were booked across the North Sea for a fortnight, with an option to record what would be their only album. The quartet spent days in a makeshift studio set up on the theatrical stage of Vanløse Bio, breaking down the Tandberg three-track reel-to-reel in time for the movie theater's evening screenings before heading off to their nightly gig. In all, a dozen original songs were set down, including Denny's recently completed "Who Knows Where The Time Goes." From the moment Sandy Denny hesitantly delivered her original "Across the purple sky..." lyric, the song took wing toward canonization. But the world would wait another two years before hearing it, on Fairport Convention's 1969 masterpiece Unhalfbricking. Only after four more subsequent years did the Copenhagen recordings come to light. All Our Own Work hit the marketplace midway through 1973 on budget imprint Hallmark in a cheap sleeve with brief, offhand notes from Cousins and fell out of print by the end of the decade. This 2014 vinyl issue collects the original 12 track album, plus a series of outtakes from the Vanløse Bio sessions previously unavailable on vinyl.

    Joan Shelly's new album, Over And Even, was written in the back of an abandoned beauty parlor on the island of Thessaloniki. The whole thing had something to do with Vashti Bunyan. That's what Joan told me, but Joan Shelley is a poet, so she makes things up. In a small, dark room that smells of expired hair-do chemicals, there is talk of hypnosis. All the windows are blacked out. Look into my eyes. White walls are blinding in the ancient sunlight. A bowl of oranges shines like solid gold, waiting for you. There is a small classical guitar, a sunburn, and a key that turns a lock, and songs come pouring out. Maybe the Greek deal was really about Leonard Cohen. That's Joanie's jam: songs wide open enough to let the wind blow the curtains around, and solid enough to hang a ton of heartache on. She writes smart, beautiful songs full of poetry, history, mystery and nature. Like all the best sad songs, they will make you cry. Then they will drag you outside and leave you flat on your back, staring up at the stars. Joan lands on a note like a laser beam on a diamond.     Full Tide (Pure Pleasure)

    As an album, Full Tide most closely resembles Shine in its breadth and depth. It's not the shiny production as much as the material itself. Recorded in Ireland and Australia, the album contains some stellar, perhaps career-defining performances of a number of tunes: her readings of Bob Dylan's Lay Down Your Weary Tune and To Make You Feel My Love completely reinvent them. The emotion in her voice is a warm fire for the battered soul to rest in. As moving and convincing as these performances are, they are not the true gems in the body of this album. In fact, her version of Sandy Denny's Full Moon, with a pianist, a bassist, and a string quartet, blows them away. Her voice, full and dark, yearns across time and space for the absent one. It's an elegy to a love, but also to love itself and friendship as well. This is key in that there are a total of four songs here by the late Noel Brazil - Black's longtime collaborator and favorite songwriter - who passed away in 2001.

    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Double Exposure

    While many rocking bands in San Francisco and beyond claim to be 'garage' bands' - Kelley Stoltz has actually recorded his new LP Double Exposure in the garage behind his house. And while the car oil stained floors are covered by oriental rugs and there are no snow shovels laying around - there is a collection of vintage synths, 17 guitars, tape echos, mellotrons, a 50's jukebox, a Teardrop Explodes poster, a tape machine used by The Residents, an amp used by Stooge James Williamson, and a myriad other noise making devices which rear their heads on his new record. All told the place is called Electric Duck Studio and it's become a muse capturing zone for Stoltz, as well as Sonny & the Sunsets, The Mantles, Tim Cohen, Life Stinks, The Sandwitches and many other tuneweavers big and small.


    Double Exposure is Kelley's first album in a while - near on 3 years since his last one, To Dreamers came out on Sub Pop. What the heck has he been doing since, you ask? Well, renovating the garage for one, and using said garage studio to engineer, produce or encourage the above named bands You see time flies when you're having fun. Add in some love, a little heartbreak, turning 40, deciding to jog everyday, staring at the wall, singing hundreds of songs into the phone, sleeping, recording an album of cover songs with his family, making a couple 45 singles, catching white wine buzzes, getting dropped by Sub Pop, playing keyboards on tour with Rodriguez, and signing on with old supporters at Third Man Records really it's as good old Sandy Denny sang, who knows where the time goes.


    Anyway, if you stir up all that stuff and a few other things we won't mention here, you have the makings of a fantastic and heartfelt record, Double Exposure has 10 new jams that Thee Oh Sees main man, John Dwyer, describes thusly, A piece of gold in your ear, A lovely thought in your mind, A breeze in the sun, This record is perfect


    Nicely put there Johnny! And you too will thrill to the sound of delay pedals twisting the keys on Inside My Head, crane your neck to the backwards guitars of Are You My Love, ramble and gamble to the clanging cymbals on the title track, question the sanity of a song called Kim Chee Taco Man, and finally, fall down and weep at the sweet fluted sentiments of It's Summertime Again.


    For all of you Aussie rules fans, the album was mixed and mastered by Mikey Young of Eddy Current Suppression Ring/Total Control and features Stoltz playing most of the instruments himself and overdubbing parts through his trusty 8 track tape machine.

    The Holy Ground (Pure Pleasure)

    Irish singer Mary Black is well known for deftly combining her Celtic roots with contemporary folk. On this release, she offers another strong set of songs, as she interprets songs from American folk favorite John Gorka (Treasure Island) and connects with Anglo-folk tradition on the lovely One Way Donkey Ride (written by Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention fame). The acoustic instrumentation feature a rich blend of guitars, fiddles, saxophones, and accordions that add a timeless feel to most of her songs. The highlight of the album is Loving Time, an emotional story of star-crossed lovers told with a bittersweet aching that few artists could deliver so poignantly. While a few songs towards the end of the album suffer from middle-of-the-road, adult easy listening arrangements, Mary Black's voice remains an incredibly expressive instrument that makes this another solid effort.
