Sara WatkinsSara Watkins self-titled debut, eagerly anticipated by the significant fan base shes built after nearly two decades as fiddle player and vocalist for Grammy Award-winning trio Nickel Creek, boasts an easygoing virtuosity. The youthful Watkins, who joined Nickel Creek when she was barely in her teens, displays formidable skill as a multi- instrumentalist, playing the guitar and ukelele as well as the fiddle, and is just as versatile, and breathtakingly mature, as a singer. Watkins incorporates folk, country, gospel, and pop into her 14-song set, produced by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones and recorded in Los Angeles and Nashville. Shes joined by a wide range of old friends and longtime heroes, including alt-country duo Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, and Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas; colleagues from the bluegrass world like Tim OBrien, Punch Brothers Chris Eldridge, Ronnie McCoury, and Rayna Gellert; and Nickel Creek band-mates Chris Thile and Sean Watkins.
Watkins mixes eight of her own songs with tunes by such artists as John Hartford, Tom Waits, and Davíd Garza. Her self-penned fiddle numbers are exuberant, foot-stomping instrumentals, while the songs for which she wrote both music and lyrics have a heart-meltingly lovelorn quality. Watkins knows how to channel in her own work the plaintive emotions of classic country and timeless pop. Theres honesty and empathy on tracks like the sweetly soulful My Friend, the brooding Bygones, and rueful album closer, Where Will You Be. She proves to be as astute as Emmylou Harris or Linda Ronstadt in her choice of covers, segueing gracefully from the aforementioned Waits, Garza and Hartford to the lighthearted country-and-western swing of Jimmie Rodgerss Any Old Time, to the world-weariness and spiritual yearning of Norman Blakes Lord Wont You Help Me, to the romantic wistfulness of Jon Brions Same Mistakes.1. HeartthrobWith Heartthrob, Tegan and Sara introduce a new kind of sound to their usual indie repertoire. "No one will confuse this with any of our other records," Sara says. "It's got a bigger, bolder, happier sound." Tegan is explicit about the supersized ambitions motivating the record. "I kept asking myself: Can I hear this in an arena? Can I hear this on a teenager's iPod as they're riding the bus to school?"
The new album doesn't just sound different, it represents a more collaborative way of making music. For the first time, the sisters actually wrote a lot of the songs together (in the past there were Tegan songs and Sara songs), and they surrendered more control than usual in the studio, dividing songs between 3 producers (Greg Kurstin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, and Mike Elizondo) and a handful of outside musicians to capture the sound they were looking for. Tegan and Sara are both effusive about Kurstin's role in the process.
"We intentionally went looking for a producer who wouldn't dwell on protecting the signature Tegan and Sara sound," Tegan explains. Sara sums up Kurstin's role with a surprising metaphor: "Greg took everything we do and put it on steroids."
For all the superficial differences, though, Heartthrob bears the true hallmarks of a Tegan and Sara record. The songs are terrific, full of lust and longing and regret, bouncing between the familiar poles of erotic rapture ("Closer") and post-breakup despondency ("How Come You Don't Want Me"). But the lyrics seem less confessional than usual, a little more universal and philosophical, as if Tegan and Sara are reflecting on the experience of passion rather than undergoing its ecstasies and torments in real time. For every urgent outburst-"Does your body shake when you get around me? Does your body ache when you think about me?" ("I Couldn't Be Your Friend")-there's a moment of calm reflection, a retrospective clarity about past relationships: "When I think of you I think of your skin golden brown from the sun/Your arms outstretched your hair cut shorter than it'd been/But still blowing in the wind" ("Drove Me Wild"). There's a hard-won maturity in these lyrics, hidden beneath the glossy surface of the music, and a willingness to tackle subjects beyond the confines of romance. This is especially evident in the striking song, "I'm Not Your Hero," which examines the difficulty of maintaining artistic independence and personal autonomy in a politicized world: "I'm not their hero but that doesn't mean I wasn't brave/I never walked the party line doesn't mean that I was never afraid."
Heartthrob gives us Tegan and Sara in their superhero tights and capes, ready to conquer the pop universe, and the new outfits suit them just as well as their old-school jeans and T-shirts. Don't be surprised if you hear these songs in an arena, or blasting on a car radio, or leaking from a teenager's earbuds on a bus. That's what they're made for. And don't worry if you experience a brief sense of disorientation the first couple of times you hear them, a momentary inability to put a name to those familiar voices. By the time you realize who you're listening to, you'll already be singing along.

Young In All The Wrong WaysYoung in All the Wrong Ways is Sara Watkins'
most cohesive and fully realized solo album.
The new collection finds her embracing the role
of frontwoman following the collaborations of
Watkins Family Hour (featuring Sean Watkins,
Fiona Apple and Benmont Tench) and Nickel

formed with her brother Sean and Chris Thile.
The album is also her most powerful. Personal
and revealing, she wrote or co-wrote each of the
10 songs-a first for her. It was produced in Los
Angeles by Gabe Witcher who arranged a stellar
band including two of his fellow Punch Brothers,
guitarist Chris Eldridge and bass player Paul

Jay Bellerose. Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O'Donovan,
Watkins' bandmates in I'm With Her, provide
harmonies on the title track while Jim James of
My Morning Jacket guests on "One Last Time."
Benmont Tench is again featured on keys.
Sara calls the record "a breakup album with
myself..." Writing and recording these ten
intensely soul-baring songs was a mechanism
to process and mark the last few transformative
years. The record is about Sara turning the
page and taking the reins of her own life, in
both a career and personal sense.

WordsCo-produced by Evans & Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood & Rascal Flatts), Words is the first full studio album release from Sara Evans in over 3 years. Lead by the first single "Marquee Sign," the album is comprised of 13 new original songs along with an acoustic version of her #1 single "A Little Bit Stronger."
"When I'm listening to a song, it's the lyrics and the stories they tell that matter most to me," Sara said. "Not only is 'Words' the title to one of the songs on my album but in listening to new music for the record, I was always looking for lyrics that moved me and expressed a powerful range of emotions. Women are natural storytellers and I'm proud to have so many amazing female songwriters represented on this record."
Words marks a creative reunion for Evans, pairing her with frequent co-producer Mark Bright (2005's Real Fine Place, 2014's Slow Me Down) while Tracy Gershon provides A&R direction. Her daughter Olivia even contributes background vocals to the record.1. Long Way Down

The Con X: CoversThis past winter, as the 10th anniversary of The Con quickly approached, Sara and I started to brainstorm meaningful ways to celebrate what was easily one of our most important records. Important not just because of the music or the elaborate way we approached recording it 10 years ago with Chris Walla. Important because it was the biggest leap we had made in attempting to write a cohesive group of songs that told a painful and anxious story about our different relationships to loss, death, love, compulsion, fear, letting go and moving on. Indisputably our most raw and intimate record, we wanted to ensure we created a new package that did justice to the layers of attachment that both we and our fans have had to The Con.
Almost immediately we established that a tour playing all 14 songs in a more intimate and stripped-down arrangement would be special and memorable for our diehard fans. But we also wanted a companion piece that would live on past the anniversary, hence The Con X: Covers album was born.
From day one we wanted the proceeds to go to our newly-launched Tegan and Sara Foundation, which raises money for self-identified women and girls in the LGBTQ community. With that intention set, we asked 14 artists who were either outspoken allies of the LGTBQ community or LGBTQ themselves to each cover a song from The Con. We encouraged each artist to approach the song they were covering in any fashion they saw fit. Their inspiration could come from the original record or The Con Demos, our first home recordings that were released after The Con came out. All the artists agreed to donate their time and energy to the project and their labels all agreed to waive their fees as well.
At the core of our planning was the hope that this new project would tell another chapter in the story that was The Con. Music allows us to project our own stories, losses, and anxieties onto the melodies and words of someone else. It's a universal language that bonds people together from different worlds, countries, and experiences. Somehow all these new covers manage to come together to add a new chapter to The Con. We are beyond grateful for the contributions of each artist, and we hope fans of The Con will be moved by their interpretations.

The highly anticipated album was written and produced by Grammy Award winning musician Jack Antonoff with co-producer John Hill (MIA, Jay Z, Empire of the Sun) as well as Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure) and others.
"It's the 2 words that perfectly title what this Bleachers album is as a documentation of my life as I can remember it at this point", wrote Antonoff yesterday afternoon in the Craigslist ad he posted announcing the album title.
Bleachers first single "I Wanna Get Better" has already streamed over 1.5 million times, was deemed "the song of the summer in February" by the Huffington Post and quickly skyrocketed into the top 10 at Alt radio.
Since the Bleachers launch in February critics have been nothing but excited and eager to hear more. Rolling Stone exclaimed "We'll be shocked if it's not all over the radio by spring", TIME raved " it's exciting to imagine what else Antonoff has up his sleeve" and Hilly Dilly proclaimed " this is the kind of music that can't get big enough."

Hit ResetKathleen Hanna stealthily assembled the members of The Julie Ruin without any of them realizing exactly what was happening. It all began in late 2009. Kathleen had not released an album since Le Tigre's This Island (2004), and she was ready to jump back into music again. She knew her onetime Bikini Kill band mate Kathi Wilcox was going to be moving to New York in the near future, so she didn't even bother with finding a bass player at first. Carmine Covelli, who had toured with Le Tigre as their video guru, was having a blast at Kathleen's birthday party when she abruptly asked him to be the drummer.
A longtime admirer of Kathleen's work, Carmine couldn't say no to her at her own party, so of course he joined the band. Sara Landeau and Kathleen both taught at Girls Rock Camp and Kathleen lured her into the band by trading Pro Tools lessons for guitar lessons. Sara's surf-informed style gelled perfectly with Kathleen's sonic vision for her new band. Kathleen approached Kenny Mellman last with the idea that they should write country songs together to sell to other artists. Within a week of their first meeting, Kathleen's mysterious "manager" (whom Kenny maintains does not exist) told her that they would never break into the Nashville songwriting scene, so Kenny might as well join her new band on keyboards. Done.
In late 2014 they began work on their second album, Hit Reset, due out July 8th on Hardly Art records. Mixed by Eli Crews (with whom the band worked on Run Fast), Hit Reset expands on the band's established sound: dancier in spots and moodier in others, with girl group backing vocals and even a touching ballad closer. Hit Reset is the sound of a band who have found their sweet spot. Kathleen's vocals are empowered and her lyrics are as pointed and poignant as ever. From the chilling first lines of "Hit Reset"("Deer hooves hanging on the wall, shell casings in the closet hall") to the touching lines of "Calverton" ("Without you I might be numb, hiding in my apartment from everyone / Without you I'd take the fifth, or be on my death bed still full of wishes"), Hanna takes a leap into the personal not seen completely on the first album or possibly even in the rest of her work.1. Friday NightIncludes Seven Tracks Not Previously Available
Friday Night is a live album of performances from Will Butler's tour
supporting his first album Policy. It was recorded mostly at Lincoln Hall in
Chicago on June 4, 2015. Five of the songs are from Policy, two are songs
written for the Guardian newspaper last year, and five are new.
This record exists partly because I had a really good band, and I wanted to
document it. Miles Arntzen (EMEFE, Antibalas) played drums (standing
up at a full kit-he didn't use a hi-hat pedal, so he could stand on that leg
while working the kick drum with the other). Julie Shore played synth bass.
Sara Dobbs played synth leads and Mellotron pads. Everybody sang backing
We started almost every show with "You Must Be Kidding." I thought the
album should start in medias res to welcome the listener into a sweaty room
with a tired, happy band and a loose crowd. So the album starts with the
encore "Tell Me We're All Right" which was only ever played once, and this is
the recording of it. We never soundchecked it. It wasn't even written yet (you
might be able to tell). But Miles plays some magical fills, Sara and Julie jump
in with good harmonies, and the crowd even begins a spontaneous call-and response
at the end ("You're all right!").
This record also exists because I wrote a lot of new songs and the band
got good at playing them, and I wanted to put them out to the wider world.
Sometimes an artist will take a new song into the studio and polish it until
there's nothing left. I wanted these songs to avoid that fate.
Think of this as a comedy record. In some ways literally-Brooklyn comedian
Jo Firestone does the introduction and the "solo" in "Friday Night"-but
also, it's an album based on working out ideas in a room full of people, playing
off their energy and expectations. It's about taking complicated emotions
and wringing communal joy from them, and then translating that joy onto
record. So here you go!

Heart BreakOnce Lady Antebellum stepped back from the spotlight (and pursued separate creative projects in the interim), the trio found themselves drawn back to collaborate once again. Setting the Florida coast as their backdrop, Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood began putting the pieces together for their upcoming sixth studio album, slowly but surely. Heart Break, anchored by lead single You Look Good', soon unfolded and fueled their new purpose. "When we started working on this record, the goal was to give ourselves some space from the day to day," says Scott in a press release.
She continues, "Surrounding ourselves in a new environment with sunny beaches and warm weather really helped free our minds to focus solely on our art. We took some of our favorite writers and other writers we hadn't worked with before to a new inspiring backdrop, where we were able to just write and soak up the journey. And it was on our first trip in Florida when we wrote 'Heart Break' that we felt it all click."
Lady Antebellum enlists such Nashville songwriters as Nicolle Galyon and Jesse Frasure (who both contribute to the life-changing title track and album opener), Shane McAnnally (on Somebody Else's Heart), Sara Haze (This City, Think About You) and fellow country singer Eric Paslay (on the album's bookend, Famous).1.
