    Sarah Sings Soulfully (Pure Pleasure)

Sassy's years on the Roulette label (1960-64) have been called the legendary singer's finest hour, a time when Vaughan's musicality merged exquisitely with her unbridled vocal ardor to achieve the sublime. Sarah Sings Soulfully, recorded at the close of that period, stands as a stunning testament to this claim - a divine collection of tracks that reveals an artist staking her soul on the rendering of each and every note, as well as the silences between them. Seductively spare, luxuriously poignant, and achingly honest all at the same time, Vaughan's vocals careen incandescently through the 12 standards presented here, swooping, sighing, and soaring with an intensity that remains unparalleled to this day. Listen to her reading of the Just Let Our Love Take Wing line on the version of Monk's 'Round Midnight found here: the fat, luscious drop of the word just, the long fermata on love, and the dip and swell that pulls the phrase forward on take. It's a moment of revelation - and incredibly, only one among the many that shimmer throughout this collection.

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

After Hours With Sarah Vaughan (Pure Pleasure)

Sarah Vaughan signed for Columbia in 1949 & her chart successes continued with the charting of Black Coffee in the summer of 1949. During her tenure at Columbia through 1953, Vaughan was steered almost exclusively to commercial pop ballads, a number of which had chart success.

No matter what she's singing you can't help but notice her amazing control and range. She's able to float effortlessly from the lowest end of the scale to the highest without effort. Her singing is as much second nature as breathing is to most of us.

Listen to Vaughan wrap her voice around a word and you begin to understand what is meant by the term phrasing. You also realize why you don't hear the term used very often anymore as very few modern singers have this ability. It refers to a singer's ability to associate the lyrics of a song with the music. However, it means more than just being able to carry a tune. It's how you sing the words and music together. To be fair the music of today doesn't really lend itself to that style of singing either. However hearing a singer of the quality of Vaughan you begin to regret its passing. I'm sure there are jazz singers around who have the ability, but we don't hear them on a regular basis.

Of course it's this ability which allowed her to be equally comfortable with any style of music she wished to sing. On this LP we hear her sail through a series of smoothly orchestrated pop tunes. Even the version of Gershwin's Summertime is given the uptempo treatment. This might have been a collection of rather commercial standards, but she gives them a soulfulness that raises them above the level of just another pop song. She might not be as emotionally raw as Billie Holliday, but that doesn't stop her from being able to imbue even the simplest of songs with the heart necessary to make them soar.

Solace is the second studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter and Grammy Award winning Sarah McLachlan. Known for her emotional ballads and mezzo-soprano vocal range, Sarah McLachlan has sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

Originally released in 1991, Solace was the album that first made Sarah a star in Canada, spawning the hit singles The Path of Thorns (Terms) and Into the Fire and being certified double platinum for sales of 200,000 copies in Canada. Solace also marked the beginning of her partnership with Pierre Marchand. Marchand and McLachlan have been collaborators ever since, with Marchand producing many of McLachlan's albums and occasionally co-writing songs.

The album received favorable reviews internationally and was a good step towards Sarah's commercial breakthrough outside of Canada, which came with her third full album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy.

Build Me Up From Bones (Discontinued)

Sarah's third Sugar Hill Records release finds the acoustic phenom exhibiting an assured and striking musical voice, proving once again the promise of
her early acclaim. "Widely regarded as one of acoustic music's most promising young talents: a singer-songwriter and mandolin and banjo prodigy with the taste and poise to strike that rare balance of commercial and critical success. - The New York Times

Build Me Up From Bones, the third release from acclaimed 22-year-old singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jarosz, is released via
Sugar Hill Records. Build Me Up From Bones was recorded in the midst of Jarosz's final semester at the prestigious New England Conservatory (where
she graduated with honors) and a rigorous touring schedule. Following her mid-May graduation, she flew straight to Nashville to put the finishing touches
on the album. Now set to embark on an exciting new chapter of her life, the songs on Sarah Jarosz's newest release are a compelling portrait of an artist coming into her own. Over the past four years Jarosz has covered a remarkable amount of ground for someone so young. She has toured across the US,
UK and Canada, appeared on A Prairie Home Companion, and taped Austin City Limits and the BBC Series The Transatlantic Sessions. Her two previous records received high praise from outlets including Rolling Stone, USA Today, Paste, Mojo and American Songwriter.

The growth in Jarosz's songwriting is prominent on this new release. She penned nine out of the eleven tracks, and while Jarosz previously tended to write and sing in third person narratives, her new material connects in a much more personal way. Love songs such as "Build Me Up From Bones" pair vulnerability with enough mystery to allow listeners to find their own meaning. The covers she has chosen-Joanna Newsom's "The Book Of Right-On"
and Bob Dylan's "Simple Twist of Fate" reflect the breadth of her evolving influences. Build Me Up From Bones was co-produced with Sarah's longtime collaborator - GRAMMY® award-winning engineer and producer Gary Paczosa. The concept was to keep the focus of the album on a trio configuration of
Alex Hargreaves (fiddle) and Nathaniel Smith (cello) that Jarosz has been touring with since 2010. As the recording progressed, other guests were added,
including Dan Dugmore, Darrell Scott and Chris Thile, building a tasteful instrumental backdrop for Jarosz's warm and expressive vocals.

Sarah Jarosz is that rare combination of instrumental virtuosity, emotive vocals and songwriting chops. With a college degree under her belt, a stunning new release completed and a national tour beginning, she continues to chart her own unique artistic path.

Ways to Die in the West. She stars as the lead in the drama feature, I
Smile Back, a film adaption of a novel by Amy Koppelman and was
previously seen starring in Take This Waltz. In 2004 Silverman made
an impressive splash with her concert film "Sarah Silverman: Jesus is
Magic," which garnered major attention at the Toronto Film Festival,
and she also received critical praise for her work on the documentary
    feature, The Aristocrats.

Silverman was nominated for a 2009 Primetime Emmy in the
Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series category for her work on the
Comedy Central series The Sarah Silverman Program. This marked
Comedy Central's first ever Emmy nomination in a scripted acting category.
She also received a WGA nomination for her work on the show. Silverman
won a Primetime Emmy in 2008 in the Outstanding Original Music and
Lyrics category for her musical collaboration with Matt Damon. In addition,
she was honored with a Best Actress Webby Award for her online video
"The Great Schlep." She is now a part of JASH, a comedy collective on
YouTube featuring original content by Silverman and friends. She has
guest starred in a slew of acclaimed and notable television shows such
as the Emmy nominated drama The Good Wife, and Monk, which earned
her an Emmy nomination in 2008 in the Guest Actress category, and
she has lent her voice to Fox's Emmy nominated animated series, Bob's
Burgers. She also released a book in 2010, New York Times Bestseller,
The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. Silverman
was dubbed "the most outrageously funny woman alive," by Rolling
Stone. She grew up in New Hampshire and attended New York University.
In 1993 she joined Saturday Night Live as a writer and feature performer
and has not stopped working since.

Ten years ago, a 22 year old songwriter entered a recording studio with producer Tucker Martine (My
Morning Jacket, Neko Case, Beth Orton) to make a record.

Poised with one of the greatest talents for carrying Appalachian music into new places, Sarah Siskind
penned a record in which every moment, every stitch thread perfectly. Recorded to 2-inch analog tape, Covered is a masterful record, in which American music and guitar icon, and one of Sarah's musical heroes, Bill Frisell plays a key role.

But amid plans for a national release, sinus illness struck and multiple surgeries followed, and Covered was instead released independently on a much smaller scale than originally planned. With little tour and press support, the album never earned its place in the hearts it could have...

A few years later, by chance, I came across a copy of Covered while digging into Frisell's catalog, for I also have a deep admiration for the music icon and couldn't get enough of his work. Looking back, I had no idea how much this album would shake me down; it quickly earned its place in my heart. I listened so much from then on that I wore out several copies, all the while pondering how such an amazing record could go largely unnoticed by the masses.

Four years passed, Sarah fully recovered from her sinus issues and set her sights high once again. She
went on to record her much lauded boutique double EP Studio.Living Room and followed it with widely-acclaimed Say it Louder, which earned her 2009 Nashville Music Awards' "Americana Album
of the Year." As she gained more and more attention, writing songs for Alison Krauss and the like, I listened along but still continued to wear out Covered, bewildered as to why it still wasn't grabbing more people with its poise.

Finally, yet still overdue, we at Chigliak give you Covered, reissued and released for the first time on
vinyl. Listen and let it shake you down.

    The Body Wins

Sarah Jaffe started work on The Body Wins the day she bought a bass and a drum set at a pawnshop. That day, she wrote the rhythmic A Sucker For Your Marketing and her second full-length began to take shape. Jaffe had pent-up creative energy inside her, after spending most of the year traveling and touring behind her debut Suburban Nature, and she explores it with abandon here.

There's a side of The Body Wins that didn't exist with Jaffe on her debut and it has a newfound pulse to it, more than a heartbeat, not quite a breakbeat. Glorified High, the first single perfectly captures that with a chorus that smacks you in the chest and lovingly lingers.

The Body Wins may sound different to those introduced to Jaffe through Suburban Nature and it should as it's more of a product of everywhere she's been, literally and figuratively, and a hint of everywhere she might go from here. Produced by John Congelton (St. Vincent, Walkmen, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Explosions in the Sky.)

Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in MontrÉal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre and has performed and recorded with many other groups, including The Luyas, Esmerine and Little Scream.

Neufeld began developing pieces for solo violin in a more formal and focused sense in 2011, though she has made improvisation and solo composition part of her process and practice since first picking up the instrument at a young age. Neufeld counts Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of contemporary electro-acoustic, avant-folk and indie rock music.

Neufeld's debut solo album Hero Brother indeed channels all of the above, flowing through shifting atmospheres and oscillating between restrained, stately ambience, emotive Études, and raw kinetic energy. Small touches of wordless vocalisation, harmonium and piano supplant the violin in a few places. The album was recorded in Berlin by pianist and producer Nils Frahm, with Neufeld's performances captured in a number of locations with site-specific acoustics, including an abandoned geodesic dome, an underground parking garage, and the legendary Studio P4 orchestral recording hall at the broadcast complex of the former GDR.

    Shine On

Three Time Grammy Winner and legendary singer songwriter makes her Verve debut with her eighth studio album, SHINE ON. Sarah has sold over 40
million albums in her career and is one of the most respected female artists in music today.

The new album was recorded in Vancouver with longtime collaborator/producer Pierre Marchand (the co-writer of hits like Adia and Building a
Mystery), along with contributions from producer/songwriter Bob Rock (Michael BublÉ, Nelly Furtado) and keyboardist Vincent Jones.

In a press release, McLachlan revealed that the album was inspired by her father's passing and her own appreciation of life: "This album is about moving
through the second half of my life in a more mindful and meaningful way, recognizing that every day, every moment is precious and though we all have
our issues and problems, our damages, we all have the ability to continue to learn, grow from our experiences, thrive and shine on. Many of the songs are
inspired at least partially or wholly by my father's passing three years ago and the profound effect losing him had on me. I had to find my footing again
without the anchor of his unconditional love.

Never Were The Way She Was

180g LP In Gatefold Jacket Includes Art Print Poster

"Stetson demolishes clichÉsto unleash fresh, unexpected energies...at once
    exhilarating and frightening." - Pitchfork

"Calmly ravishing and emotionally centered...Ms. Neufeld has a warmly
expressive sound palette,." - The New York Times

Two of Constellation's acclaimed solo instrumental artists join forces on this
tremendous new album of original compositions for horn and violin.

Colin Stetson has developed a unique and renowned voice as a performer and
composer, chiefly on bass and tenor saxophones, where he rallies an array of
technical strengths and innovations (circular breathing, contact micing of his own
body and the body of his instrument, vocalizations through the reed) to make some
of the most captivatingly organic, darkly soulful and otherworldly solo instrumental
work of recent years. His brilliant trilogy of New History Warfare records (2007-
2013) has been resoundingly celebrated by critics, fans and fellow musicians
    across many genres: avant/jazz, modern classical/Miminalism, electronic/noise,
industrial/dark ambient, black metal and indie rock.

The solo violin work of Sarah Neufeld has emerged more recently, and especially
through 2011-2014, in the period between her primary band Arcade Fire's last two
albums. While no stranger to modern/minimalist composition with her Bell Orchestre
ensemble dating back to the early 2000s, Neufeld has lately forged a newly distinctive,
deliberate and evocative solo violin practice combining rock, folk, ambient and
modernist sensibilities, culminating with her debut solo album Hero Brother in 2013.

Stetson and Neufeld first began playing in duo formation while on tour together as
soloists in 2012, joining each other on stage for one or two of their respective
pieces. Stetson had also collaborated in the past with Bell Orchestre and Arcade
Fire, and with Neufeld and Shahzad Ismaily in an improv trio dating back to 2010
(including the Blue Caprice soundtrack). Duo compositions for their debut album
emerged throughout 2014, and were road-tested that spring with performances at
the Festival de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville (Canada) and Moers Festival
(Germany). The album was recorded without overdubbing, looping, sampling,
cutting or pasting at their farmhouse attic studio in rural Vermont by Hans Bernhard
and mixed in Montreal by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire).

Never were the way she was is guided by the metaphorical narrative of the life of
a girl who ages slow as mountains; excited, exalted, and ultimately exiled in her
search for a world that resembles her experience. The album's expansive sonic
trajectory and multiplicity of structures and voicings belies the fundamental
economy of two acoustic instruments combining in real time. The result is a musical
chronicle that powerfully establishes its own spatial and temporal horizon, a
soundtrack that requires no images but profoundly compels the imaginative. From
the filigreed ostinato polyrhythms of "The sun roars into view" and "In the vespers"
to the stately long tones of "And they still move", the dark drone-inflected sea-saw
waltz of "With the dark hug of time" to the growling, pulsing thrust of the album's
epic centerpiece "The rest of us", Stetson and Neufeld offer up an incredible (and
impressively diverse) integration of composition, performance, timbre and texture
while holding their respective instruments in sparkling juxtaposition. Never were
the way she was is a sum quite definitively and thrillingly greater than its parts.

    After Hours (Pure Pleasure)

This Roulette Records' 1961 Birdland Series LP of Sarah Vaughan's After Hours was the first ever album by 'Sassy' to feature just her voice with bass (George Duvivier) and guitar (Mundell Lowe) in a program of mostly ballads, with Miss Vaughan crooning quietly in a rarely used style. Her voice is at its peak on these intimate, relaxed, almost spontaneous sessions. A true jazz classic of considerable beauty, with George and Mundell perfectly complementing 'the Divine Sarah' as she runs through a set of carefully chosen (yet unrehearsed) favorites, all songs one might've heard her perform in a smoky club well After Hours.

Just one gorgeous track after another here. On Wonder Why Vaughan plumbs the depths of her vocal range. Easy To Love features an outstanding walking bass line. They swing it so well, Sarah is moved to finger-snap. Her exquisite enunciation and vocal sliding are most noticeable on a mellow cover of Duke Ellington's Sophisticated Lady. The LP's most energetic song, Great Day again spotlights George's amazing bass work. A mere fragment, it fades out much too soon. On an impressive Sentimental Mood, Sassy utilizes sharp, flat and quarter tones, and a few notes perhaps never heard before. The facáde of aloofness that shields a broken heart in Vanity makes for a melancholy, yet apropos, set closer. - Annie Van Auken
