Ape School (Discontinued)Michael Johnson arrived in Philadelphia a swamp-ape from the Florida panhandle to lead music technology studies at a downtown arts university. Instead, he discovered in its hallowed halls the derelict crown-jewel of archaic analog electronics with which he would forge his image of the Ape School. Armed with the Moog Modular synthesizer he helped revive-- just the fourth born and installed by the hands of Robert Moog 40 years earlier in 1965-- Johnson conjures original songs from beyond his prior tenures in Kurt Heasley's Lilys, and Sub Pop's Holopaw, using the Modular to weave lush motorik dreamsound throughout dynamic instrumentation and his distinct croon.
This second one-man-does-all album by Johnson--the first to use the animistic moniker-- marries primitive songs with incorporeal sound: glamatic pop explorations, navigated by studio light, coalesced over time, wine, fallouts, and Rundgren-style self-control.
From the resounding onset of Wail to God, to the song's oscillator outro barely two minutes later, the tonal breadth and sonic fluidity of Ape School is clear. A song like Did What I Did flirts with pop sensibility, but coheres in subtle feedback when repetition would normally devolve it to redundance. Elsewhere, as on My Intention and Deathstomp, Johnson commits to full mechanical shredding and focused romps of analog rock glory awash in system buzz. Other, more spacious moments like That's OK, It's Over, and The Underground reveal the songs' subtle instrumental basis, and bare the accidentally clever, eloquent lyrics of his elastic tenor.
Mixed in Jamaican Brooklyn with Michael Pecchio in a bath of reverb, delay, tape echo, smoke, mirrors, orange juice, and cayenne pepper, Ape School has finally congealed. Upon graduation from Primate U, this album, initially intended for release by co-conspirator Alfred Daedelus Darlington, finds a home at Ninja Tune's Counter Records.
With a band of student human musicians rescued from the confines of musical education, Ape School has opened its doors to limited faculty enrollment. Composed of previous cohorts in Lilys, Holopaw, Human Television, and beyond, the live Ape School incarnation takes one monkey's primordial creations on summer vacation to civilization. Prinzhorn Dance School are still recognizably the same spiky Brighton-based duo whose ultra-rigorous debut cut through the excess of 2008 like a scimitar through bacon fat. But with their trademark stripped-down intensity now winningly off-set by moments of unabashed tenderness, their third album Home Economics continues and even accelerates the move away from austerity and into human warmth begun by its acclaimed 2011 predecessor Clay Class. All the best six-track albums - The Fall's Slates, Orange Juice's Texas Fever - know exactly what they want to say and how they intend to say it. Home Economics shares that infectious sense of urgency. There's not an inch of spare meat on it - from Reign's snatched moment of optimism, through Battlefield's restorative meeting of minds with an urban fox on a drunken walk home in the early hours, to Let Me Go's concluding tribute to "a love that won't rewind and will not be deleted". Spindly yet sensuous, together and alone, exquisitely sad but somehow full of hope, Prinzhorn Dance School knit together disparate and even opposite fragments into an utterly satisfying whole.1. THE HISTORY OF ROCK IS FULL OF MISCONCEPTIONS. WE ALL HEARD THAT POPULAR ONE: ROCK MUSIC IS LOUD AND DANGEROUS, IT´S THE DEVIL'S
MUSIC. BUT DOESN'T EVERYBODY KNOW AT LEAST ONE BEAUTIFUL SONG BY A ROCK BAND?
Even if you are not attending the mighty School of Rock, you know one of those bloody emotional moments when the lead guitar sings its way through the solo and the
chorus comes back while you are flying on the wings of heaven. Or something else. We all need a little bit of silence sometimes, just to stop from being part of this crazy
world we live in.
One of the finest moments on this ballad compilation is the new song "On The Edge Of Our Time", being one of the best ballads he's ever written to date. But the climax of
"The Ballads V" is without a doubt the fascinating new song "Love's Holding On". Singer Johnny Gioeli is joined by Bonnie Tyler here!
There are 9 more songs, of course, pretty much known from his previous albums (e.g. Neil Young' "Hey Hey My My " and Deep Purple' "Mistreated") which wraps up another
classic, dynamic and high-quality Axel Rudi Pell album. As one fan from Israel said on Facebook: "If there was justice in the music business, your ballads would be as big
as the Scorpions one."LP 1

Death To False Metal is not a traditional collection of studio leftovers or songs from the vault, but a wholly original follow-up to Weezer's just-released Hurley. The album was created using the basic tracks of 10 previously unreleased recordings-nine never-before-heard songs plus one cover-to assemble a brand new and truly modern-sounding record. The result is an evolution for the band, a giant step forward with a nod to the past.
''These were great songs, great recordings, but for some reason they didn't make the final cut for previous records,'' Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo stated. ''Some just weren't right for the albums we were recording at the time-just a bit ahead of their time or too 'rock.' Now, the time is right to introduce them. Together, they are the album that should logically follow Hurley.''
Featuring tracks the band originally began recording from the late '90s to late '00s, Death To False Metal was a labor of love for Cuomo and his co-producer Shawn Everett, as well as the entire band. Each track was individually evaluated by the production team of Cuomo and Everett to figure out how to make each of the songs reach their full potential, and ultimately fit harmoniously on the album. After that process, they then brought in each band member in to complete the parts needed. Some of the ten songs received a major overhaul, while others got the equivalent of a sonic tune-up.
''Turning Up The Radio'' is the result of Cuomo's 2008 collaborative YouTube project, ''Let's Write A Sawng,'' for which he invited fans to submit ideas. As they went through the steps of composing a tune, eventually, 15 people became involved. This track is one of only two songs not solely penned by Weezer for Death To False Metal.
''Blowin' My Stack,'' ''Losing My Mind'' (which features some of the most raw and personal emotions in a Weezer song), ''I'm A Robot,'' and a rock cover of the massive R&B hit ''Un-Break My Heart'' were all first recorded prior to the release of 2005's Make Believe. ''I Don't Want Your Loving'' was originally laid down as a demo for 2002's Maladroit. The abrasive punk-metal ''Everyone'' hails from post-1998 Pinkerton period, as does the pop song ''Trampoline.'' The piano-based ''Odd Couple'' and new-wave-style ''Auto-Pilot'' were laid down prior to 2008's Weezer (aka ''The Red Album'').
The title Death To False Metal comes from a phrase that Cuomo and his younger brother used when they were kids. Musical integrity was a matter of life or death then, and now the new album is a reminder of how important music is for both Weezer and their many fans. At a time when many of their contemporaries seem to have forgotten how to rock, Weezer is ready to teach them. Cuomo and fellow axe-slinger Brian Bell crafted nine epic guitar solos-one for nearly every song on Death To False Metal-and with the band's signature hooks in full effect, Weezer's school of rock is back in session.1. PHOXPHOX is a bunch of friends from the Midwestern circus hamlet, Baraboo, WI, a place where kids often drink poisoned groundwater and become endowed mutants. They make music that straddles Feist and Monty Python.
It was in Baraboo that the six unlikely musicians attended high school together, some playing on the soccer field, others on video production sets. But in a town with a drive-your-tractor-to-school day, they didn't last.
They did the thing that most people do when they are 18: they fled the coop, each going their separate ways (to film school, cosmetology school, a job with Homeland Security ). But promises were made that couldn't be kept, and as they fell in unrequited love and lost their respective jobs, in spite of themselves, each simultaneously pulled the ripcord and came home.
The sextet promptly (-ish) got a house together in the Portland of the heartland, Madison, WI. As prolifically documented in their online video series, PHOX rekindled their onetime A/V production house while discovering how to live as a family (i.e. how not to berate each other about the hair in the sink).
After two years of cohabiting, PHOX beheld a demo reel of bedroom-recorded music (and home movies) that made Bon Iver and The Fray recording engineer Brian Joseph blush. Donning his producer's cape (and occasional lab coat), Joseph cheer-led the band through its debut album at April Base Studios in Eau Claire, WI.
Joseph's enthusiasm propelled the band through the production of more than a dozen songs that have been swimming in the think tank for two years.
Mixed by Michael Brauer at Electric Lady in NYC, their debut album is a school of simple folk-pop songs swimming amidst a chaotic eddy of rock, psychedelia, and soul.
If the goal here is friendship, PHOX is doing quite well. If the chosen path is blue collar pixel-pushing and church camp trust falls, they're on the way. And if their only coping mechanism is to lay down their arms and, for 30 or 45 minutes a day, shut up and listen to each other, you can't be too upset.1. Calico Man

Do What Comes NaturallySome people call it a vibe and some people call it a groove. We call it boogie soul. It's the sound of HANDSOME JACK on their new album "Do What Comes Naturally". Produced by Zachary Gabbard of the BUFFALO KILLERS and featuring Bob Nave (of the legendary Lemon Pipers) on hammond organ, among others, the music of this album seamlessly flows through deep dark mid-tempo boogies, smoky upbeat burners, and soulful feel-good rockers all with a natural ease. HANDSOME JACK hails from Buffalo NY and began as a blues garage rock band. After high school they moved out of the garage and developed their sound into a natural soulful boogie mthat remains rooted in raw blues. Trying to take this experience of what the band does best and what works live this new record is wider than previous releases... This brand new recording will see the light of day in 2013 via the band's new home here at Small Stone.
In 2009, after more than 100 gigs all over Europe since the debut album release it was time for the album ''Hail the Black Sky''. Recorded during the early months in 2009 in Malmoe, Sweden by Markus Nilsson and produced by Deville. The band has taken a step to a more straight forward songwriting and this album has more of an album feeling than the last one recording the songs during the same period of time. It follows the pattern of significant Deville grooves and 70`s driven riffing of the darker school. Eleven tracks of rock in the veins of Black Sabbath. Kyuss and Soundgarden it takes you to the next level of 70's rock for the 21st century. This album proves the bands progress to their own sound in the genre of heavy rock and beyond and will definitely take the listeners for a ride.
The Swedish rock band Deville released their full length debut ''Come Heavy Sleep'' in December 2007 on Buzzville Records with great reviews. Two European tours took place in Jan/Feb and Nov/Dec 2008 that went through seven countries. Heaviness and grooves dominates ''Come Heavy Sleep'' that stretches from stoner rock to doom riffs. In 2005/2006 Deville released a record on Daredevil Records a split record (double feature CD/ LP). It was also released in Europe and in the US. The band have existed around six years and have done over 200 gigs and festivals in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, Spain and the U.K the past five years with bands like Sepultura, Fu Manchu, Mustasch(S) and Brant Bjork.1. King Of The Waves (Awaiting Repress)Its been nearly five years since Little Barrie has released new material, but King of the Waves definitively proves that its been absolutely worth the wait. Since 2007, the band has dedicated themselves to honing their musical reputations, doing everything from appearing live with Primal Scream to collaborations with the likes of Morrissey and Mark Ronson.
Guitarist/frontman Barrie Cadogan and bassist/vocalist Lewis Wharton are joined on the album by the new addition of drummer/vocalist Virgil Howe, son of renowned Yes guitarist Steve Howe. The resulting sound produced by the band is as intensely electrifying as one might expect from such a dynamic and in-demand group of individuals. It calls to mind an old school Detroit rock n roll showdown between Link Wray and The Creation, with the MC5 and Motowns best in attendance to cheer both sides, and the omnipresent threat of a killer wave lurking just overhead.
Longtime friend and collaborator Edwyn Collins co-produced the album with Little Barrie, and sings backing vocals on the track Money In Paper. Engineer Sebastian Lewsley also returns on King of the Waves, recorded at Collins West Heath Studios in north London. Available on 180g vinyl in gatefold jacket.1. Surf Hell
